Don’t Be Idle MONEY MATTERS

I
n one of my favorite novels, As I Lay Dying (1930) by my favorite novelist William Faulkner, an old man named Anse Bundren justifies his laziness by reasoning that once he gets to Heaven, riches and wealth “will be taken from them that have and give[n] to them that have not.” But what does Jesus say in Matthew 25:29? “For whoever has will be given more, and they will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them.” Anse Bundren actually seems to have it backward, biblically speaking. Yet old Anse and those like him often attribute their poverty to “bad luck.” But as Benjamin Franklin famously wrote in Poor Richard’s Almanac, “Diligence is the mother of good luck.” The harder we work, the “luckier” we get! When I was a kid growing up in the 1970’s, I cannot recall seeing anyone holding a sign on a corner begging money. Rather, I remember a blind man who stood regularly outside the Post Office downtown with a cup of pencils he was selling to make money. This man was obviously and permanently disabled. Today, on countless street corners and interstate on-ramps, there are young, apparently able-bodied men and women holding cardboard signs expecting to be handed money (and this was true for many years before our current pandemic). As Christians, we are instructed to help the poor, the widow, and the orphan—no question about it. But I also believe God wants us to use sound judgment (discernment) and not simply hand over our money indiscriminately to anyone who is panhandling or holding a sign on a corner. Robert D. Lupton has an eye-opening book entitled Toxic Charity: How the Church Hurts Those They Help and How to Reverse It. Lupton has worked for many years with numerous charitable and

missions-minded organizations, and one of the author’s observations is that “giving to those in need what they could be gaining from their own initiative may well be the kindest way to destroy people.” There is a considerable difference between giving to help people during an immediate crisis (disaster relief, for instance) and regularly giving to the same people who chronically solicit donations. This latter dynamic might actually be “enabling” destructive behaviors such as idleness or substance abuse. In 2 Thessalonians 3:6-7, Paul goes one step further: “Now we command you, beloved, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, to keep away from believers who are living in idleness and not according to the tradition that they received from us. For you yourselves know how you ought to imitate us; we were not idle when we were with you.” Surrounding ourselves with idle people may end up infecting us with the same apathy, hopelessness, and sloth. At the very least, we might normalize and legitimize idleness (notice how this sounds nicer than “laziness”). After all, one must wonder why we’ve had a proliferation of aggressive panhandling in cities and towns across America (sometimes turning violent), as well as the ubiquitous people holding cardboard signs at countless intersections. For those reading my column in this magazine, odds are you currently have a job and are working diligently in pursuit of your goals—paying bills, trying to save something for a rainy day, and investing for your retirement. On the other hand, many have become unemployed during this pandemic, and there’s a chance that more may join the jobless ranks unless the pandemic ends in the near future. Let’s encourage those less fortunate, offer godly counsel, and a “hand up” in addition to the occasional “handout.”

Today I Saw God

s we approach this season of Thanksgiving hoping to find our tables filled with desserts, I want to share a little story with you as a
reminder that God is working ALL things for your good just as He promises in Romans 8:28. I pray we are reminded to fill our homes with the sweet aroma of gratitude no matter what our situations and circumstances look like. A few weeks ago, I was having one of those days where I needed a little pick me up. Jeremy lost his job during this COVID-19 situation, and although it seems to be a terrible thing and it has been a challenging, we understand God has a greater purpose in this moment for our family, our marriage, and our ministries. We know God is more than able to provide abundantly above all we need, but there are days where we are human, and our faith seems to fall short compared to that of the biblical characters we admire. This particular day was one of those days for me. Yet, I remained steadfast in prayer. Ever so carelessly, a mere thought passed from my mind to my lips and I whispered, “Jesus, I would really like some chocolate”. I thought nothing else of my prayer nor my additional small whisper afterwards. The next day I received a call from an unexpected guest, saying she had some gifts to bring us. When she arrived, I sent Kainen outside to pick up the box she brought. It was filled with lots of blessings, and you guessed it, among those gifts were chocolate bars. Not just one kind of chocolate but a variety of chocolate bars, filled with delicious goodness of all sorts, like
glory. And sometimes He even supplies our wants. Today, I saw God in the gift of a candy bar! Where did you see Him? “And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.”

Why Is God’s Will So Important?

I gladly accept God’s gift of the Spirit to me to keep my feet on “level ground.” The Bible tells us also, “For it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure” (Philippians 2:13). What child doesn’t long to please their parent? There’s joy in that, ya know! I get

It seemed that night that the stars were shining brighter than I had ever seen before. There were so many as far as the eye could see. There was no way I could even begin to count them. I have heard it said that the darker the night, the brighter the stars shine. That night will be forever etched into my memory. It was not long after that night that the Good Lord took my grandfather to his heavenly home. My grandfather lived to be 82 years young. I remember one time as we sat talking that he reached in his well-worn wallet and took out a dime that his mother had given him many years ago. He told me to look at the year that the dime was made in, and it was the year that he had been born. I was so awed by that. He had kept it all these years. Just a dime doesn’t go far these days. But when you place such sentimental value on it, it has great worth. What is the most valuable thing that you own? Guess what? It all belongs to God, and He has blessed you with it. How much do you have to be thankful for today? Are the blessings so great that they could be without number? If you show God your love, then you are showing your gratitude to Him. You also show your love to God by showing others His love.

The Story Of Puppy y wife loves animals, especially dogs. She passed that on to our three girls. We’ve got pictures and stories of our cats, hamsters, fish, ducks, rabbits, you name it. At every family gathering, it’s not long before someone will say, “Remember that time…” and a pet story will burst forth, and we’ll laugh or cry depending on the tale. That brings me to Puppy! He was a black stray dog mix that showed up at our house one day. As you might expect, he was hungry, needed a bath, and I doubt he had ever seen a vet. Of course, the girls all began the cry, “Can we keep him, please, daddy, can we keep him?” My response was, “…No. And don’t start with what are we going to name him.” My plan was to take him to the animal shelter. The problem was that he wouldn’t let us touch him. He had obviously been badly mistreated. He wanted food and a place to get out of the weather, but he was not about to let us touch him: not even one little head scratch. By now, you’ve figured out the obvious. We kept him. And since I wouldn’t let the girls name him, they called him “Puppy.” He lived with us for 15 years. He was always glad to see us when we drove in the driveway and would always hang around us when we went out into the yard. He protected our house by barking if anyone he didn’t know came to the door, and of course, he ran any other animal out of the yard. But he never would let us pet him. You’d think that after all those years, he would have known that we loved him and wanted to care for him. On a rare occasion, if you would sit down on the ground, look away from him, and be really still, he would slowly walk up to your hand and put his nose on your fingers. Then, and only then, he would let you scratch his head. But if you looked at him, he would run and look back at you as if you violated his protocol. God used Puppy one day to speak to me. It all started with a cat named Moe. I’m not even going to start that story.

I’ll just say it was another animal in distress that one of my girls just knew it was her purpose in life to rescue. We had had Moe not even a week. He was back from the vet with medicine and instructions on how to help the little thing survive. It was freezing outside. This cat was on my couch, in a warm house, snug and well cared for. Puppy, however, was outside in the winter cold with no shelter (I had built him a house with a warming light, but he wouldn’t use

He was the “oldest son”: he had been with us at least a few years, and here was this cat who had been with us not a week and he was “in the promised land.” Then the Lord spoke to me. “Puppy is outside missing the blessings of a warm house and loving hands because his fear keeps him from seeing your desire to be good to him.” Puppy lived with us for 15 years. We fed him and cared for him as best we could, but he never had the life he could have had because he just couldn’t overcome his fear and trust us. Where do you need to trust God? How would your life be different if you did? Spend some time meditating on 1 Peter 4:7—and on Puppy.
