God’s Rx for Fear

T

by Phil Wade

here are 3 problems with fear:

Here it is:

1.) It’s unhealthy.

1. You must “know” Jesus.

2.) It’s unreasonable.

2. You must listen to Jesus.

3.) It’s unhelpful.

Unhelpful fear never accomplishes anything. It’s like racing your car engine while you’re still in park. Lots of noise, lots of smoke, but you go nowhere. What is the Rx for fear? Rx I: Believe God will take care of you.

3. You must follow Jesus. When fear steps in and we begin to entertain it and practice it – • It becomes the controller • Fear is the attempt to control the uncontrollable • It’s assuming responsibility that God never meant for us to have.

Psalm 23:1 says, “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.” How does making God our shepherd remove unhealthy fears?

If God is running your life and He’s your Lord and shepherd, then know He can control any and everything, so it’s time to fear not!

First, we have to know what shepherds do:

Rx III: Begin praying about everything!

2. A shepherd protects – he defends against the enemy. 3. A shepherd guides – he leads sheep when they don’t know which way to go. 4. A shepherd corrects – any problem that comes along, he corrects it. Then He gets more specific; Philippians 4:19 says, “And my God shall supply all your needs according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” He didn’t say all our greed, but He did say all our needs. God says, “I will”, not maybe, not I’ll think about it, not possibly. He will meet all your needs: spiritual needs, financial needs, relational needs, health needs, everything. Rx II: Accept Jesus as your Lord. “The Lord is my shepherd.” The Lord can’t be your shepherd until the Shepherd is your Lord. We must stop playing God and let God be God. To accept Jesus as Lord means three things. John 10:14, 27 says, “I am the good shepherd; and I know My sheep, and am known by My own…My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.”

6 // June 2018

Pray about everything we fear. Just talk to God. He’s our Lord, our Shepherd, our friend. Fear and worry does not change things; prayer does. Prayer puts us in touch with the “one” who overcomes our fears. When it comes to fear, there are 2 options: Panic or Pray. 1 Peter 5:7 says, “. . . casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.” Fear is like driving in dense fog – • You can’t see what’s ahead. • It’s an illusion. What fear has you handcuffed? What’s got you worried, tired, exhausted? The prescription to fear is a relationship with God. Religion will not get rid of it. You need a relationship, a shepherd, someone who provides, protects, guides, and corrects. God says, “I didn’t make you for religion. I made you for Me.”

Science and Christianity

A

by Janelle Martin

s a mother, and an educator, I have learned that science is not the enemy of Christianity, but the confirmation of God’s wonderful plan of creation. Here are some fun things you can do with your children to teach them some simple scientific principals as well as God’s amazing ways. 1. Bubbles and Balls: Using several different bubble wands, show the children that no matter the shape of the wand, bubbles are always round. The reason they are round is that bubbles are shaped by the air pressure around it. God doesn’t want us to be shaped by our world, but for us to remain the way he made us, like a rubber ball. Eventually, a bubble will break because the pressure outside becomes greater

4. Diversity Lesson: Take several hard boiled eggs, and dye them different colors. After they dry, peel them and show the children that on the inside, they all look the same. Then explain how God created us all differently and yet on the inside, we are all the same. 5. Salt Makes a Difference: Using a ¼ cup Epsom Salt, and ¼ cup warm water, in a clear cup stir until the salt is dissolved and then add a few

than the pressure inside. A solid rubber ball doesn’t lose its shape.

3. Penny Polishing: Find some dirty pennies, and place them in a clear cup. Cover them with lemon juice and let them soak for 10 minutes, then clean them off with a paper towel. They will look brand new! This is a chance to let children know that God can take our dirty hearts and make them clean with His Love!

drops of food coloring. Place the cup in the refrigerator until crystals begin to form (about 4 hours). Spoon the crystals out on a paper plate. Jesus tells us to be salt and light in our world, so that the world can see that adding Jesus to our lives makes a difference. I hope you’ll take advantage of these activities to make a teachable moment with your children. (These are especially good on those rainy days!)

About The Author

2. Chalk in Buttermilk: Soak small pieces of colored chalk in buttermilk for about an hour, then let the children color either on black paper or on the sidewalk and note how much brighter the colors are, and that they change color as they dry. When we “soak” ourselves in God’s word and His teachings, it makes a difference in us, and how the world sees us.

Gò0dNews for Women

Women Will You Answer the Call? by Dr. Pat Gross

14 // June 2018

Women, when life's journey brings on trails, troubles, tribulations and struggles that seems unbearable, God ask the question, "Behold, I am Lord, the God of all flesh, Is there anything too hard or difficult for Me?" (Jeremiah 32:27). The answer is, No there's nothing too hard for God; just trust God and His word.

Always remember that God has a perfect plan for each of our lives; however, He didn't say we will not be tired. He did say, “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to proper you and not harm you, plans to give you hope and a future” (Jeremiah 29:11). In closing, women seek ye first the kingdom of God above all else and live righteously. He will give you everything you need to move forward (Matthew 6:33). Women, will you answer the call and take your rightful position in ministry? Lord, help us to go into the hedges and highways to win souls to Christ. May this word encourage you today and always.

About The Author

P

lease know, women of God, when God calls you, He equips, enables, provides, and qualifies us to do His will. You must know that He will never abandon us to figure it out on our own or without God's strength. So don't fear or fret it; God is with us always (Hebrews 13:21). God always provides the skills, abilities, direction, and protection that we need when He calls us out. God said, "Be still and know that I am God! Listen to my voice.” I am very sure of this, that he who begun a good work in you, He will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ (Philippians 1:6). Women, stop sitting around twittling your thumbs with uncertainty, doubt, nay-sayers, jealousy; friends walk away, don't worry. God is saying, I called you and yes you can! Always listen to the voice of Jesus who called, chose, appointed, and anointed you to tell the good news about Christ Jesus! You, believe the report the Lord! Just do it! We can believe God by being obedient to His commandments and His will. For this is the work of God, that you believe in Him who sent you (John 6:29). You must continue to walk by faith and not by sight. Rejoice always because you have perfect confidence in God (1 Corinthians 7:16). May God continue to bless us daily with grace and new mercies that we may do His will. Lord, thank you, for always being there for us and keeping us on track, for helping us focus and providing all our needs and some of our desires. I will trust in you Lord with all my heart (Proverbs 3:5-6). Lord you are our strength and shield for that our hearts are filled with joy and thanksgiving and He will do the same for you (Psalms 28:7).

Dr. Pat Gross, Pastor of Grace Fellowship Ministries located at 620 N. Glenwood Ave. Suites 2 and 3. Husband Larry, mother of 2, Ricky & LaShon (Chris), Nanna 2 grandsons and niece. Ask the young daddy I spoke with earlier this year....in 2015 he suffered the loss of an infant son, and in 2016 an infant daughter. I can still remember as he said he wished he would have known with his son’s loss all the things he realized when his daughter passed away. That he could have held his son, taken photos, bathed him, made countless memories and that it would have been okay to do so. To not have worried what other people thought. To see his face as he talked about the things he wished he could do over, gave strength a new meaning. Understanding Your Role in Achieving Holistic Health

H

by Sara L. Campbell

and for many persons, this may mean a combination of self-care and healthcare. As you work with healthcare providers, be responsible and do your part. Take care of your whole being and expect a holistic approach to your health from your healthcare provider. Do not settle for anything less.

Health promotion and disease prevention should be a major focus for you and your family. Develop a lifestyle that embodies your entire being, seeking natural, safe, and effective approaches for health promotion and disease prevention. A healthy diet, regular exercise, obtaining appropriate screenings, getting adequate sleep and rest, maintaining an intimate relationship with the Lord, and engaging in fellowship with others are all vital to one’s holistic health. Be sure to put good things into your body, including what you watch, read, and listen to on a daily basis. Be sure to include prayer for health, protection, and any needed healing. Some people are concerned that if they seek medical advice, they are not trusting God. God created healthcare providers and Christian providers seek the Lord in their daily work. Holistic health is best achieved through a healthy balance of approaches. Extreme approaches to your health may include a decision to stop all of your medications, or on the other end of the spectrum, to only depend on medications. God wants us to collaborate with Him to achieve health

Do your homework using reliable sources. Wikipedia is not the best resource, but there are reputable internet resources available. Avoid the tendency to simply accept a diagnosis or treatment without investigating the situation on your own or seeking other advice. You are the best person to know your own body. Ask questions and advocate for holistic health. A good health practitioner will want to understand and know the big picture of your health. God created our “whole” being. All of the parts of our bodies are meant to work together in a synergistic way, each part cooperating and collaborating with the other parts. Luke 10:27 states, “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbor as thyself.” This is a perfect verse for demonstrating how we are meant to be, not built with disconnected body parts, but with all of our parts working in synchronization.

olistic health is not a new concept, but it currently seems to be gaining traction in our society. “Holistic” health refers to the whole being, rather than only looking at symptoms, diagnosis, and medication. Physical, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing contribute to one’s own level of holistic health.

Whether we have a relationship with God or not, things happen. Life happens. Bad things happen. Good things happen. Bad things happen to good people. The key is knowing that God is your foundation. It doesn’t matter where you are in your relationship with God; it doesn’t matter if you’ve always been to church or if you’ve just learned who God is. It matters that you know God is still relevant. The message he gave Moses and Noah, Peter and Paul, still applies. Through the hardest times in my life and through all the bad decisions, Psalm 91 was a constant reminder that God was still there. Psalms 91:1-2 says, “He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. hey say it’s the hardships of life that form our true character. If that’s true, then Americans who were born between the two World Wars have certainly earned their character badges. For this, we call them the “Greatest Generation”. Because they made the world a better place for us, we’re committed to making the world a better place for them. Honoring the Greatest Generation is part of our mission here at Legacy Village. In fact, serving this generation is our mission. In carrying out that mission, we hope to uphold the values handed down to us by the Greatest Generation in every possible way. Who is the Greatest Generation? You’ve probably heard the term before. It was coined almost twenty years ago by Tom Brokaw. Former anchor and managing editor of the NBC News, Mr. Brokaw published his best-selling book, The Greatest Generation, in 1998. By doing so, he forever set the phrase in our hearts and minds. While the phrase may be familiar, but have you ever stopped to wonder what makes this group of people ‘The Greatest Generation?’ Four Factors Contributing to the Formation of the Greatest Generation 1. Momentous Changes This generation lived through the Great Depression, World War II, and then on into one of the most the prosperous eras in the history of our nation. 2. Work Ethic Perhaps because of having lived through the Great Depression, this generation knows a thing or two about working hard. On top of that, they lived through the years of World War II and appreciate stability. 3. Frugality The combination of living during the Great Depression and experiencing war-time rationing means

28 // June 2018

many in this generation are well-versed in frugal living. They learned to make due. They also learned creativity in the face of scarcity. 4. Sacrifice and Honor Many gave of themselves during World War II, to the extent that they lost life or limb. The war was truly all-encompassing for this generation at that time.

The Battle of the Bulge, for example, is considered by military experts to be the greatest in the nation’s history. United as a country in the face of evil, the greatest generation came together to sacrifice what they could to make the world a better place. How Can We Better Serve the Greatest Generation? Working in the senior living industry, I strive to give the greatest generation a sense of purpose. Finding a purpose can mean so many different things to different people. It can be gardening, cooking brownies, singing in Bible study or just participating in daily activities. Finding each individual’s purpose is a big reason as to why I do what I do.

rowing up, I remember thinking how great my father was. How smart, how talented, how kind, how perfect he was. Being older now, and looking back, I think about him and realize he wasn’t perfect, but he was really close! When my three girls were young and growing up, I often remember thinking I wish I was as great a father as my father was. He set such a high standard of integrity, and raised such a high bar of character and love. What a legacy he left and what a name to try and live up to! Speaking of leaving a legacy, we find in Genesis 17, that God speaks to Abram and changes his name to Abraham. God also informs him that he will be a father of many nations, and that He would establish a covenant between Himself, Abraham, and his descendants. No difficulty living up to that standard and name, huh?! What could possibly go wrong there? Now, I know that Abraham’s life and decisions were far from perfect, however, we read later in scripture, that God calls Abraham His friend, and that he was highly recognized, recommended, and even renowned for his great faith. What seems to be an impossible standard to reach in men’s eyes, turns out to be a success in the eyes of the Lord. Speaking of high standards, imagine having to live up to the ultimate name of Jesus, the Messiah, the Son of God. That same name that causes storms to cease, makes demons tremble and flee, heals bodies and souls, and eventually brings every kingdom to its knees. Imagine trying to live to that standard, and live up to that name. Wow! Not just anyone could do that. It would take someone very special. Someone worthy of not only the calling, but worthy of the opportunity. The one referred to as the only begotten son of the Father. The one who humbled Himself and came to earth to be an example for us. And the one to whom the Father looked down upon and said, “This is my beloved Son, in whom I

32 // June 2018

am well pleased” (Mark 1:11, NKJV). He was worthy, He is worthy, and He forever will be worthy, and He continues to live up to that name. And here is an awesome truth: so can you. You can live up to the name God has given you, the calling He has given you, and yes, even the opportunity He

has given you. No matter your history, good or bad. No matter your story, good or bad. No matter your training or lack thereof, good or bad, you can leave a great legacy, and you can live up to your great name! Jesus doesn’t look at your failures and disappointments, he looks at your potential and at what He sees as His finished product. So, be encouraged fathers, for although you are not perfect, you are considered a friend of our Heavenly Father, and worthy of all He has for you. Strive to be the great father your kids believe you are, and leave a legacy with them worth leaving, and they too will carry on your name!

we should go. The Bible refers to members of churches as brothers and sisters. Church is a gathering of people who want to commit to their spiritual walk with others rather than alone. The best part of attending is so we can find out our purpose. Jeremiah 29:11 tells us that the Lord has plans for us. As members get to know you they can offer encouragement into your plan. Being part of a church has many benefits to get great help when trying to figure out your place and where you fit. Another reason is so we can worship. We can worship anytime, anyplace. unbelievers are watching their Christian friends constantly.

Paul is not saying he will drop his convictions. However, he “became as a Jew” … (and like those) “under the law” so that he “might win the more” (v. 19-20). I believe Paul is saying he will practice friendship or relational evangelism, and will do so by engaging with those who are lost by using, within principle, whatever means are necessary. Friendship evangelism is becoming appropriately “engaged” with those we discern to be unbelievers. As we become friends and open up, the person who has yet to profess Christ can see how we handle life's ups and downs, the good and the tough, and how we navigate through these times. Honor Your Parents hildren, obey your parents in the Lord; for this is right. Honor thy father and mother, which is the first commandment with a promise” (Ephesians 6:1-2). This past year I turned 40. The big “4-0.” I have gray hair and a 15-year-old who thinks she is always right. I have a husband and my mother lives with my little family. same year we moved, relocated, and I changed jobs. Again, stress gets high. My mom is not healthy, but she would move heaven and earth to help in any way she can. You see, I never question my mother’s love; her motives are always pure even when they upset me. I get upset and when this happens, I don’t always have unconditional security from all those around me, but I do from my momma. She loves me in spite of me. She is usually the one who gets the “Lord forgive me” moments. For this I apologize. On behalf of all of us silly kiddos who haven’t learned yet, please forgive us.

God takes us through seasons of our lives and when we are in one season transitioning to the next, we can feel lost and alone. That’s where I was in January of this year. In my new season I began working with senior citizens. Through this opportunity the Lord has shown me so much as a child of a senior. Each season holds new promises. Lesson # 1: A parent’s love is without end. When our parents begin to age, we can either do what the Bible tells us, or we can choose to ignore it. Lesson # 2: The Bible doesn’t say to honor our parents if they have been good parents. There are no guidelines for the command! We honor regardless. Lesson # 3: As our parents age, the roles shift a little. What if your mom or dad didn’t make sure you had milk for the next day or clean clothes? What if they didn’t check on you? Make a simple phone call. Lesson # 4: There are so many ways to get help if you are ages 60 and up. If you are caring for someone ages 60 and up, there is help! Use google and research. Get the help! Your parents shouldn’t have to decide if they will buy medicine or eat supper. Research! Final Lesson: We are not promised tomorrow. Love well and love fully. To the mommy’s and daddy’s reading this, just keep loving those adult children, keep pressing in. To the children who have aging parents, stand on the word of God and honor your parents. Seek out help and love them well. Go hug your parents if you still have them on this earth. They are of much value. Let the hurts of the past go and love! About The Author
