Messy by Ryan Ralston

About The Author

ou are about to read something that will shock you: people are messy. Shocking, right? Probably not. Honestly, you probably read that statement and nodded in agreement (we can at least pretend I got that right) because everyone has been hurt by someone. Even though we may be Christians, one of the hardest things to do is to do as Jesus tells us in Matthew 28:18-20 and lead people to have a relationship with Jesus. The difficult thing is that when we read the Bible, we see messy people God used to help other messy people, and we wonder: how did the people in the Bible do it? I believe what made some people in the Bible, and some people in today’s world, successful in loving others, is that they learned to see what God could and can do with someone, not just who the person was in the moment. Here are a few suggestions on how to do this: 1. Remember We Are Image-Bearers of God When God created Adam and Eve (Gen 1-2), He created them in His own image; the problem is that we can sometimes resemble sin more than our Heavenly Father. Because of that, those of us who identify as followers of Jesus can see people as projects instead of persons of eternal value. I believe God wants us to see people as His creation, deserving of respect, love, patience, and grace because He made them for a purpose: to praise God and help others praise God. 2. Remember Sinners Will Acts Like Sinners and Saints Still Sin When we meet people who are not followers of Christ, we as Christians, should not expect these people

to live moral lives. We should expect sinners to act like sinners: to let us down, to rebel, to have hardened hearts, and to live like they don’t know Jesus. When we remember this, we will have realistic expectations that help us manage frustrations, meaning we will stress less when sinners do not live for Jesus. Likewise, we should expect Christians to be imperfect (after all, we are imperfect!). We may be eternally purified, but we can be carnal. We need to give one another the grace Jesus gives us every day: renewed and increasing! 3. Remember How Much We All Need Jesus In moments when I am like the Pharisee who prays by condemning another and by focusing only on my status and achievements (Luke 18:11-12), the Gospel convicts me. The Gospel of Jesus Christ reminds us that we are all sinners (Romans 3:23), we deserve Hell (Romans 6:23a), Jesus loved us when we were unlovable (Romans 5:8), He gives us eternal life as a gift (Romans 6:23b), and we can all be saved by calling on the name of Jesus in repentance and faith (Romans 10:9-13), we realize that we are no different from the person with the biggest mess of a life possible. We all equally need Jesus and we all equally need others to remind us of that everyday.

Summer Days by Mandi Bagwell

S

ummer: the days of fun, swimming, beaches, and lots of time having fun with friends. The kids are all so excited that school is out and can play and have fun and do all the things they want to do, while those few weeks from school are at a standstill- moving quickly. VBS, summer camps, and so many opportunities for fun, and for friends, new friends and old friends that hopefully last forever. Each season is another opportunity to show God’s love to others, to forgive those we may argue with and to make the most of the time we have. It is a time to help those that may need a hand and to show others what kindness is. These acts will bless others and you as well. Summer is filled with new friends and friends from school which can present many opportunities for the summer. Be kind to everyone because you never know what they are going through. Forgive those that you think are wrong; Not forgiving them wastes too much time. Don’t spread rumors or pass around a story that is not meant to be shared. Don’t talk behind people’s backs but always confront ones with the truth, if you have question. Most of all, show God’s love to everyone you meet. You could be the one that makes their day something special.

About The Author

hen our oldest turned 16 almost 6 years ago, my wife and I made an important decision that a lot of folks can’t understand. We decided to share our truck and let our son drive the little SUV we owned. It made good budget sense: • No additional car payment. • No insurance on a third car (an especially important decision with the cost of insuring a 16-year-old boy.) • No additional maintenance costs. • No extra gas driving him to his job and/or school. When our boy went off to college a couple of years later, he took his savings, and we matched it, to buy a good, used car, and the following February, his sister inherited our old SUV. Since then, my wife and I have continued to share the truck. It’s not always convenient, but, honestly, it’s one of the best decisions we ever made. We have time for private conversation on our way to and from work. We drive to church, events and shopping together. If one of us has a doctor’s appointment, work meeting, or errands to run, we check schedules and make adjustments as necessary. There has been the rare occasion when we both needed the truck on the same day, but we’ve always been able to work around it. This notion that every driver in the house needs his or her own car is rubbish. You don’t. If my wife needs the truck on the weekend, she takes it while I do weekend chores. If I have an early Sunday morning meeting, my wife rides to church with our daughter. A few years ago, I was part of a once-a-week Bible study

at 5:45 a.m. I drove to the Bible study, drove back home to get my wife, and we drove to work together. I haven’t added together how much we’ve saved with our decision, but I know it’s easily in the tens of thousands of dollars, if you count the purchase price of a second car. Now that our baby girl is getting ready to go off to college next year we may bite the bullet and buy another car since our primary work-around will no longer be available, but maybe not. Our daughter is saving for a car of her own. If she buys one to take to college, maybe we’ll take the 20-year-old SUV and keep it running. There is no way we would have made the progress we have made toward paying off our debt had we not made this decision, and that is wonderful. But, the truth is, the best result of our decision to carpool is that we’re closer as a couple. We talk more. We spend quality time together. We laugh together. That we save money together is an added bonus.

Slam That Door! wish I had never opened that door!” Upon parking my car in our garage I was looking forward to being greeted by the blue eyes of Mollie who was half Siberian Husky and half Alaskan Malamute. The daily grind had been tough that day responding to customer complaints, reviewing audits, and meeting metrics. Stress had attached itself to me like some black mold.

I approached the back door in our garage which led to the backyard without any forethought. I quickly turned the knob and pulled the door open. I screamed! I immediately slammed the door. “What was that?! That was not Mollie! Those eyes were black as coal!” I started walking in circles in the garage. I decided to take a peek at the creature behind the door again. Slowly I opened it and immediately I heard a growl-like sound. There sat an opossum, crouching behind the door that rose up at me exposing its teeth. I slammed the door again. “Where is Mollie?!” I looked out the garage window and there she was, standing frozen in the middle of the backyard. With the help of our neighbors’ high pressure hose, I chased off that nasty marsupial.

There are many other doors besides that one I wished I had never opened in my personal life. Sometimes temptation comes and finds us and sometimes we go looking. What is your vice? I thought once I crossed the line and believed that Jesus bore my sins on the cross, the struggle would be over. Wrong! The penalty for my sins was taken care of once and for all by the blood of Jesus Christ. However, the war continues for my soul and yours. From his book Genesis, Moses warns (4:7) “If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must master it.” So what does “crouching” mean in the context of this verse? Sin is waiting to be stirred up to destroy us. If you and I open the door to the enemy’s invitation to sin, we are rousing it up! What doors in your personal life need to be slammed shut? Think about your access to the internet through your I-Phone or your tablet device. Some men have referred to their phone as “porn in a box”. From his book #Struggles, Craig Groeschel writes: “I don’t know a single man who wanted to crush the wife he loves when she discovered his “little secret.” But one glance followed by another click often leads to an addiction that seems impossible to overcome.” As Paul stressed to Timothy, he stresses to us now: “Keep yourself pure” (1 Timothy 5:22b). Paul also did not believe in waiting around regarding temptation. In 1 Corinthians 6:18a he appears to shout: “Run from sexual sin!” If you really want to change, what boundaries are you willing to set?

Gò0dNews for Women

He’s Still Working on Me here is a children's song we all learned in Sunday school, but have we thought of how this song still applies to us today? "He's still working on me, to make me what I outta be." I find myself reflecting back to those days of innocence. How exciting it was to learn about Jesus and all the many histories of the people of those times. They came alive in my mind and instilled in me a hope that through God anything is possible. Faith was so easy then! No worries, no cares, just peaceful. “But Jesus said, ‘Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven’" (Matthew 19:14). Kingdom refers to the wholeness of life (holiness). Children are yet tainted by the deception of mankind and sadly we teach them not to trust. We are all so afraid of this world and daily we withdraw from reaching out to others. As we all know, none of us are perfect, (Romans 3:10). Only Jesus Christ! Think back to that day as Jesus was crucified as described in Matthew 27:32-56. People he loved and that claimed to love him, rebuked him, spit upon him, and laughed at him. Do we, as Christians, do that to those around us? Someone in church will fall into a valley; are we there to lift out our hand to them as Jesus did Peter when he started to sink into the waters (Matthew 14:29)? Or do we push them deeper into the

14 // July 2018

water, talk about them, distance ourselves from them? So many are hurting in this world and Jesus loves them, too despite race, religion, background, or social status. He is still working on us all, if only we let him. Jesus commands us to love one another 11 times in the New Testament. Most of the time our love comes with terms, if you break those terms, you’re no longer welcomed in our lives. Thankfully, Jesus isn't like us! He has only 1 term, to accept him into our hearts. In the 1st verse of the song, it ends with “He is the potter and I am the clay.” Isaiah 64:8 states this very thing, saying we all are the work of his hand. Have you ever watched a potter form clay? It a long, tedious process and takes much patience. The clay may not form as you like and you may have to start all over again and again, etc. The same is with us and God. He wants to mold us into what he created us to be. This isn't a quick and easy project and if we are defiant, it can take even longer. Daily, we must get back on the potter's wheel and ask him to form us into what he wants of us. If you break or become warped, know you haven't become un-useful to God. He is ready to for you and always willing to mend a repair in every aspect of your life.

Billboards by Jennie Arnold

M

ost of us don't stop to consider it but our lives are "walking billboards" for God if we call ourselves Christ followers. How we conduct ourselves, especially when out in public, is a testimony as to how close a walk we actually have with Him.

"Look carefully then how you walk! Live purposefully and worthily and accurately, not as the unwise and witless, but as wise” (sensible, intelligent people) (Eph. 5:15). Do I walk daily as one who is showing the love of God to others, especially in how I speak to or treat them? Do I try to reach out to a stranger in need? Am I available to a neighbor that might need a listening ear or a meal cooked? I know many who are not Christ followers who are probably watching my every move. Yes, I fail at times. But, still I "press on" to do my best at whatever I feel I've been called to. "And this is love; that we walk in obedience to his commands. As you have heard from the beginning, his command is that you walk in love" (2 John 6). There are some days my "billboard life" might not be as pretty as others. Possibly I'm dealing with an issue and trying to work through it with the help of the Holy Spirit. But then the day comes when things are back on track, looking up, and I feel ready to tackle whatever comes along.

I might not have a "fancy" billboard life but I pray that my "simple, but God-loving" walk is something to catch someone's notice and they might want just a tiny bit of what I have. I long to be able to give God glory for all that my life has been and will continue to be. For Him.

What Will Your Legacy Be?

ecently I completed my last day of a 9-month leadership program I was involved in. The theme for our last session was legacy. We visited historic places and we were to talk about what we wanted our legacy to be. How would we daily live our lives with purpose and intention, and how would we want others to remember us. I couldn’t formulate into words that day what I wanted my legacy to be, but I have thought a lot about it since then. I decided to share my acronym for the word legacy. Live by the Golden Rule, Encourage others often, everything is not a competition, there is no I in team, Givers not takers, remember to extend grace, Ambition is ok, but always remember your roots, Courage should outweigh your fears, You are the author of your legacy, tell your story well. There are two things that come to mind when I think of the word legacy, 1. My beloved Mawmaw and 2. Countless ministries that began because of the impact of a brief life. Today we will talk about number one. We will save number two for a future date! Anyone who had the privilege of knowing my Mawmaw can certainly tell you about so many wonderful memories with her. Those precious memories and her legacy are now all that remain. You see, she went to her Heavenly home on Grandparent’s Day back in 1999. Although it has been almost 19 years since that day, her legacy is still impacting so many generations of our family. According

20 // July 2018

to her beloved children, grandchildren, loved ones (and really all who knew her) her legacy is comprised of: family is everything, faith matters, live by the Golden Rule, value others, remember your roots, and always stay humble and kind, (just to name a few). This special woman always showered each of us with her love and attention, and she was exactly what we needed, even when we ourselves didn’t know what we needed. (A special thank you to my cousins for their reflections as I prepared this article. It was beautiful to see what we each remembered most about the woman who truly shaped our lives.) Today I ask you, what will your legacy be? When your loved ones look back on nearly 20 years without your physical presence, what gifts will you have bestowed upon them? I can assure you the priceless gifts my Mawmaw left behind are far more treasured than money, material possessions, or the most precious of metals. For in each one of her descendants she left a part of herself. We carry her in our hearts daily by the choices we make. Whose legacy is shaping the person you are becoming? How will you shape the lives of those around you? Who will your legacy impact. I encourage you to take a moment to read the poem “The Dash” by Linda Ellis. How will you spend your dash?

William L (Bill) Hall first contracted with Missouri

Farmers Association (MFA) in November of 1965 and formed Bill Hall & Associates Insurance agency. Located on Shallowford Road at Tunnel Boulevard, the agency sold auto, home, farm, and life products. The agency grew and took on other carriers while continuing to focus on the personal lines products.

Bill and Morgan decided to move their agency to the highway 58/highway 153 area and opened an office there in 1980. They also recognized the changing insurance market of the ’80s and made the changes with these companies in order to stay a viable market for their clients. Companies were merging, buying, selling, and moving in and out of the local insurance markets. A change of name to Hallmark Insurance & Risk Management Solutions, Inc. was made to better identify the agency’s service to the community.

In 2006, William Brandon Hall, also a Carson Newman College ’06 graduate, joined the agency. Brandon’s desire was to continue the legacy of working with churches by managing that sales team. Unfortunately, Bill passed away in 2004 and was not there to see a third generation take the agency he started forward into the future.

6 Habits Ruining Your Weight Loss

on’t allow mindless habits to sabotage your weight loss goals. Listed are some common traps that will jeopardize your weight loss: #1 Boredom: Snacking because you do not have anything else to do is very how common; it is to pass time with snacks. Break the snacking habit by recognizing it; be determined to break the snacking habit by finding something else to keep you busy, such as reading a book or catching up on something that you have been putting off.

#2 Snacking While Watching TV: Snacking while watching TV is a big culprit of mindless overeating and will sabotage your weight loss. As an alternative to snacking, plan ahead for healthy low calorie options, that way you don’t find yourself at the bottom of a potato chip bag. I like to make a protein smoothie in a blender. You can make it thick and top it with fruit and granola for an ice cream treat. #3 Finishing Off Leftovers: We have been taught as children to clean our plate, because of starving people out there and we could not be rewarded with a dessert until we ate everything on our plate. Change the “Starving people out there “ mentality. You don’t have to clean your plate or eat all of your

24 // July 2018

leftovers, regardless of the way you have been taught. Don’t allow guilt to convince you that you have to overeat because someone else is hungry. It will not fix the hunger problems of others. Stop eating when you are full. Save the leftovers for another meal. #4 Skipping Meals: Skipping meals because you are not hungry or you don’t have time to stop and eat will set you up for failure every time. Skipping meals will only increase your hunger and cause you to overeat. I like to call it a “Right now hungry” or another term, “hangry”. You are not yourself when you get that hungry; you look for a quick fix and grab something easy and fast to snack on while you are deciding what you would like to eat for dinner. It is a cycle we have all been through. Plan your meals and do not miss them. Don’t allow yourself to become so hungry that you lose all control. Plan your meals. #5 Filling Up on Healthy Food: A calorie is still a calorie, even when the food is considered healthy. Count your calories, regardless of how clean the food is compared to junk food. Some foods you may consider healthy, such as bananas, pineapples, and other fruits are high in sugar and have the same impact on your blood sugar as table sugar. Pay attention to the food labels on everything that you eat. #6 Drinking Fruit Juices: Fruit juice contains as much as, and in many cases more, sugar than a soft drink. Eliminate juice as much as possible from your grocery list. If you need to add a little flavor to your water try squeezing some lemon, an orange slice or cucumbers into your drinking glass. This will give flavor without the excess sugar and weight gain. Remember, habit changing requires persistent determination. It does not happen overnight. It requires diligence by practicing discipline. Self -discipline is a “Fruit of the Spirit”; to grow it must be exercised. About The Author

7 Common Forms of Dementia lzheimer’s is by far the most common type of dementia. It accounts for nearly threefourths of all dementia diagnoses in this country. An estimated 5 million people have Alzheimer’s disease, and the numbers continue to climb. Alzheimer’s is now the sixth leading cause of death in the United States. While Alzheimer’s is the most prevalent form of dementia, there are different types. Many of these can be just as life altering. They range from Vascular dementia to Dementia with Lewy Bodies. Less Common Forms of Dementia 1. Vascular dementia: This form of dementia occurs when blood flow to the brain is interrupted. Often it is a stroke that causes vascular dementia. Impaired judgment is usually the first symptom loved ones notice. There are varying degrees of severity related to the amount of damage caused to brain cells. 2. Dementia with Lewy Bodies (DLB): Lewy bodies are protein clumps that form in the cortex of the brain that lead to dementia. Early signs of DLB include sleep problems, falls, balance issues, hallucinations, and uncontrolled movement. One thing to note is that some people who have Alzheimer’s disease also have DLB. 3. Parkinson's dementia: As Parkinson’s disease progresses, it often creates dementia. An estimated 50–80% of people with Parkinson’s will end up being diagnosed with dementia, too. Researchers think this is due to deterioration of the nerve cells in the brain. Memory loss, mood changes, depression, speech problems, paranoia, and delusions are all symptoms of Parkinson’s dementia. 4. Frontotemporal dementia (FTD): The most common early signs of FTD are a change in personality and difficulty with verbal communication. The diagnosis of FTD sometimes takes a while because the disease impacts people at a younger age than Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. Health care providers may struggle to reach a diagnosis.

28 // July 2018

5. Huntington's disease: This brain disorder usually occurs in adults between the ages of 30 and 50, but it can develop at any age. Common symptoms of Huntington’s disease include cognitive decline, as well as loss of control of the arms, legs, and face. 6. Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus: When fluid builds up in the brain, it can cause a type of dementia known as Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus. Loss of bladder control is a distinguishing trait of the disease. Other common symptoms include memory loss, falls, and balance problems. 7. Mixed dementia: An increasing number of dementia experts believe that when a person has dementia, they likely have more than one form of it. This condition is referred to as Mixed dementia. Alzheimer’s disease and Vascular dementia is the most common combination. Because dementia can present unique safety concerns for families, many turn to memory care communities for support. At Legacy Village of Cleveland, our memory care program is called The Harbor. It has been designed to serve residents with Alzheimer’s and other memory related disorders. We realize that both residents and families affected by these challenges often feel battered by the ‘winds and waves” of these challenges. We are here to offer a safe place from these storms of life. At The Harbor, we focus on providing a “Purposeful Day” for our residents. We recognize that memory loss affects everyone differently, and that is why we develop a special service plan for each resident. This nationally recognized program combines state-of-the-art technology with compassionate care and support. I would like to extend an open invitation to families to visit The Harbor at Legacy Village of Cleveland to learn more.

Summer Berry Trifle by Deanna Key

Directions Ingredients • 3/4 c. Seedless raspberry jam • 1 quart (1 and a half pounds) of strawberries cut into fourths • 1 pint raspberries • 1 pint blueberries • 16 oz cream cheese • 1-3/4 c confectioner’s sugar • 1-1/2 c heavy whipping cream, cold • 1 tsp vanilla extract • 1 vanilla pound cake

32 // July 2018

Set aside a few berries for topping the trifle. Heat the raspberry jam in a large bowl in the microwave for about 1 minute, or until hot and liquidy. Add the fresh berries and toss to coat. Let sit while you prepare the rest of the recipe, stirring occasionally. In a large bowl, whip the heavy cream until stiff peaks form. Set aside. In another large bowl, beat the softened cream cheese with the powdered sugar until smooth and creamy. Beat in the vanilla and then beat in a third of the whipped cream. Using a large rubber spatula, fold in the rest of the whipped cream until well combined. Cover the bottom of a 9-inch (14-cup capacity) trifle dish or glass bowl with a layer of lady fingers (break into pieces as necessary). Follow with 1/3 of the berryjam mixture (including 1/3 of the juices), then 1/3 of the cream. Alternate, ending with the cream cheese mixture on top; for the last layer of cream, leave a 1-inch border around the edge showing the fruit beneath. Garnish with the reserved whole berries and a fresh mint spring if using. Refrigerate for at least 8 hours, or overnight, before serving. This is such a beautiful dessert and perfect for summer get-togethers with family and friends. My daughters love making this with me! It’s simple, colorful, and oh so tasty!

Gò0dNews for Everyone

The Attributes of God ho is God really? A God that is... Wise: He has the ability to devise perfectly. He makes no mistakes! Whew! That’s great for me because I make plenty, but learning His way keeps me in check. Infinite: He is limitless and endless. Praise His name; He has the ability to give himself to all, and there’s a lot of people out there. Sovereign: He is in control of everything that happens! Yet He gives us free will which holds us accountable for our own choices in life. Holy: He is set apart from all created beings. There is not one sin or evil thought in God. He is pure and righteous. Unlike me and you. Triune: He is the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Miraculous! Omniscient: He possesses perfect knowledge; he is all-knowing. Might as well face it, we cannot hide from Him. It’s been done and failed. Anyone else get that T-shirt!? Omnipotent: He is all-powerful! He never tires or runs out of energy. Again, so many people, yet so much of Himself to go around! Mind blowing! “Powerful!” Omnipresent: He is with us everywhere. “Always present.” We are never alone. Self-existent: He has no beginning or end. He is the “I Am who always is.” He is the only thing in the universe that is self-caused. Take that science! Self-sufficient: He has no needs, but He does desire a relationship with us. Yet, he does not need our help to exist, but instead is gracious and loving as he allows us to be a part of advancing His Kingdom. Love: Jesus on the cross, need I say more? Merciful: Willing to show compassion toward sin in place of judgment if man’s heart is repentant. This is amazing and ignites my soul! Gracious: Giving gifts to men who love Him even when they don’t deserve it. Jesus, the greatest gift ever given! And none of us are worthy, but to Him worth it all.

34 // July 2018

Faithful: He forever fulfills His promises. What the Bible says Himself is true! Therefore He is Truth!!! God does not lie! Can we say that about ourselves? Uhhhh, no! Just: He doesn’t conform to some outside criteria. His being “just” brings equality to all mankind. Our system of justice is not perfect, but Gods is!

Immutable: He is never changing. He is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow. We change on a whim! Oh how grateful I am for His consistency! Good: He is kind, benevolent, and full of good will. His actions define His goodness. He gave His one and only Son for crying out loud! How much better can that be!? Eternal: He always has been and forever will be! What hope that brings! I look at all these attributes of God and I am beside myself! What the Bible says about who God is, is far greater than my own ideas of who he is and knowing the truths behind His real character only makes me love and desire Him more!

From this experience I started getting much closer to God. The circumstances surrounding me led me to know I needed to rely totally and completely upon him. That’s where submission comes in. I started praying. I literally would pray driving down the street, in the shower, at work, or just all day long. I realized I needed to submit my life to him and listen to what he had for me or didn’t have for me and my future. I dated or spent time with a church friend for a while and he was a great deal of comfort after experiencing what I had been through. However, I knew he was not the one for me and started to realize how to “listening for God’s voice.” He doesn’t always speak to us out loud. That’s why he left his Holy Spirit here for us. Gò0dNews for Everyone

God's Rx for People verywhere we look there are people. It seems our biggest problem in life is people. It is said: “To dwell above with those we love, that will be a glory; but to dwell below with those we know; now that’s another story.” James talks about how to get along with other people. James 2:1 says, “My brethren, do not hold the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with partiality.” When James starts a sentence with “My brothers”, he’s getting ready to nail you to the wall. He’s talking about prejudice, partiality, and favoritism. The New English Bible calls it “snobbery”. Snobbery can be described as someone whose nose turns up when their eyes look down or someone who thinks they’re better than others. The Greek word for favoritism is a compound word that literally means to receive someone’s face, to receive at face value, and to receive on the basis of how they look. That’s superficial judgment. James says, “No! Stop it!” But it is a common social disease. What are some common discriminations? We often discriminate because of appearance. We can’t judge people by their not dressing like us. How about ancestry? We judge people according to race, nationality, and ethnic background. Age? They are too young or too old to do this or understand that. One we may forget about is achievement. We gush over winners and forget losers. And even the winners don’t have lasting fame. They from hero to zero in less than a minute. And an obvious discrimination is affluence; we judge people based on their wealth. Here’s where James really drops the anchor

40 // July 2018

on discrimination: economic distinction. James 2:2 says, “For if there should come into your assembly a man with gold rings, in fine apparel, and there should also come in a poor man in filthy clothes…” The rich man is not criticized for being wealthy. The members are criticized for being partial. Then comes the poor boy. He has holes in his jeans, no shoes, no deodorant, unkempt, looks bad, with a ball cap on. Ushers, say now where do we sit him? The rich guy can sit in the front so everyone can see him, and the poor boy can sit in the back corner, or if we run out of seats, the floor is fine. The Greek word is “under my foot stool.” It’s the ultimate put down! James says there are 3 problems with favoritism. 1. Favoritism is unchristian. 2. Favoritism is unreasonable. 3. Favoritism in unloving. James 2:5-7 says, “Listen, my beloved brethren: Has God not chosen the poor of this world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom which He promised to those who love Him? But you have dishonored the poor man. Do not the rich oppress you and drag you into the courts? Do they not blaspheme that noble name by which you are called?” God’s not checking your wallets or purses or bank accounts before He saves you! Our value is not based on our valuables. Don’t confuse net worth with self-worth. In closing, look with me at the prescription on how to treat people. Rx 1: Accept everybody. Rx 2: Appreciate Everybody. Rx 3: Affirm Everybody.
