Getting Ready For Christmas So We Won’t Skip It
preached a sermon to the good and patient people of Garden Lakes Baptist Church a few years ago titled “Packing Up Christmas for Another Year.” In that discourse, I spoke of reading John Grisham’s wonderful novel, Skipping Christmas, the week before Christmas Day. A funny and insightful book, it was made into a movie, Christmas With the Kranks, in 2004, which I, along with my family, saw on Christmas Day that year. (If you’re considering seeing it, read the book first then view the screenplay). The book, as well as the movie, reveals that if one attempts to “skip Christmas” there may be enormous consequences. I really don’t worry that much about us skipping Christmas. But I do worry about us skipping Christmas. Just contradicted myself, didn’t I? Not really. We’ll go to crowded malls, and to the office parties, decorate the house, abuse the credit cards, and present gifts with, “If you don’t like it, you can exchange it.” That’s what I’ve told my beloved wife for years. It’s a good line. I’ll not be able to use it much longer, though. She’s started circling things in the catalog – sizes and all. Hint! Hint! No skipping out this year. What would it be like with no crowded malls, crazy office parties, decorating the house, out-of-control credit card use, and wondering whether it’s the right gift or not? Less stress? I doubt it. There would be something else to stress and distress us. Like maybe skipping Christmas? There are many reasons why I like Advent. It reminds me of the kingdom that’s not of this world. Derived from a Latin word meaning “coming” or “arrival,” Advent is a time of expectation. Always denoted by the four Sundays that precede Christmas Day, there can be as many as 28 days in this season and as few as 22. Beginning on December 3rd, this year has the lowest quantity of 22 days, which is symbolized by preparing for the coming or arrival of Christmas. Twentytwo days to get ready for Christmas? Yes. And our culture needs every one of them for the temptation to skip Christmas is great, even among the followers of Christ. But will we skip Christmas? It is so tempting in this secularized culture. And you and I have contributed to

its secularization. The enticement of materialism can be devastating. It can lead to forgetting there was a virgin, bearing the name Mary, and her fiancé, Joseph, a man of integrity and devotion, spending the night in a stable. It’s tempting to skip the manger part where a Baby was placed. There were shepherds, the low-lifes of the day, who heard angels announcing the birth and saw those bewildering
messengers from God. The shepherds, along with family members, gathered to see the Child in a mother’s arms in a remote village in the Judean Hills. That’s Christmas. None of us can really afford to skip that either. So, don’t. Go ahead and read Grisham’s book. Watch the movie. Be sure to read that other Book, too. The one called the Bible – especially Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. Interestingly, those guys say much more about “the coming of Jesus,” the first one and the second one– reflecting on the first and longing for the second–and how we are to live, than it does about His actual birth. But it is His birth for which we prepare in these Advent days and rightly so. Take the time to unpack Christmas for another season. Savor the mystery during these 22 days. Don’t skip it. In today’s society, you see so many young couples who think divorce is the answer to the smallest argument. Marriage is a lifetime commitment! Matthew 19:6 NIV says, “So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.” You see no matter what happens nothing should come between you. God gave each of us a “helpmate.” It is during this

What is Christmas All About? n 2015, A Charlie Brown Christmas aired on national prime time television for the 50th time. In a world where the latest greatest technology is outdated in a matter of months, and social media trends come and go in a matter of days, 50 years of anything becomes quite meaningful. I am a fan of all things nostalgic and all things Christmas. So, when the two are combined I am hooked, and the Charlie Brown Christmas special falls squarely into that category. For many families watching the Charlie Brown Christmas movie is part of their family traditions. It is a presentation that both children and adults can easily relate to and realize the real meaning of Christmas. If you have not made this a part of your Christmas tradition, I suggest this is one that you may want to begin. The big question of the movie is, “Does anyone really know the real meaning of Christmas”? As Charlie Brown is frustrated and asked the question in Linus’ presence, he quickly responds, which has become a highlight of that movie. Linus replies he knows and proceeds to the stage and quotes the scripture from Luke 2. There is one important thing I did not notice about the movie until recently. Charlie Brown is best known for his uniquely striped shirt, and Linus is most associated with his ever-present security blanket. Throughout the story of Peanuts, Lucy, Snoopy, Sally, and others all work to no avail to separate Linus from his blanket. And even though his security blanket remains a major source of ridicule for the otherwise mature and thoughtful Linus, he simply refuses to give it up. That is until this moment when he simply drops it. In that climactic scene when Linus shares “what Christmas is all about,” he drops his security blanket, and I am now
convinced that this is intentional. Most telling is the specific moment he drops it: when he utters the words, “fear not.” As I reflect on it now, Charles Schultz was intentional in making a statement, and it is so simple, yet it is so brilliant. The birth of Jesus separates us from our fears. The birth of Jesus frees us from the habits we are unable (or unwilling) to break ourselves. The birth of Jesus allows us to simply drop the false security we have been grasping so tightly and learn to trust and cling to Him instead. Right in the middle of speaking, Linus drops the blanket.

The world of 2023 can be a scary place, and many of us find ourselves grasping something temporal for security, whatever that thing may be. The era of 2023 is a world in which it is exceedingly difficult for us to “fear not.” But amid fear and insecurity, this simple cartoon image from 1965 continues to live on as an inspiration for us to seek peace and security in the one place it has always been, in Jesus’ care for us.
