Downright Neighborly

Iwas outside hanging something on the line. It was a beautiful fall, sunshiny day, and I had no doubt that my clothes would dry during the course of the day. Not many years ago, that was a chore I had in helping out my mom, and it was not so enjoyable. I do not remember when we finally got a dryer, but it was a blessing to have in the wintertime. Do you remember when it was so cold it seemed that the clothes froze on the line? Brr…even in the south it can get cold hanging wet clothes out on the line.

How often we can take our blessings for granted. Today, as I was hanging out my last item, I looked and saw that little brown dog coming to see me. Now, I do know who he belongs to. He is well-fed and just loves to be talked to and petted. I know that he lives somewhere in our neighborhood. He knows who will welcome his presence, and he says hi in his own way. Then, he goes on about his day, leaving just as fast as he came.

Imagine getting a kind word from an animal. My mom’s dog also greets me when I come to visit, and I feel she also gives me a kind word— welcoming me into their home. I was thinking that if a kind word from a dog can mean so much, how much more is a kind word from a two-legged person? Simply a call from a friend or a neighbor checking on you? “Hey, how are you doing?” Sometimes, just to hear someone else’s voice can bring a smile to your face and heart.

I remember one Christmas my husband and I were miles apart. It was also our wedding anniversary, and I was missing him really badly.

Then, the phone rang and his voice was on the other end. It made my day! Take time today to be as kind as our downright neighborly dog, and give someone a smile. It does make a difference to show kindness to others.

“A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures of silver” (Proverbs 25:11).
