Love: God’s Definition

Romans 5:6-11 by Phil Wade
his passage shows the depth of justification and gives one of the clearest definitions of agape love. Agape love goes much further than phileo love. Phileo love is brotherly love—a
love that gives itself for a brother. Agape love is a godly love—a sacrificial love. A love that gives itself for those without strength, including the ungodly, the enemy, and the sinner. I. Notice we were ungodly and without strength. Romans 5:6-7, “For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die.” A. We were without strength (weak, worthless, useless, helpless, hopeless, destitute, powerless, unable to help ourselves). B. We were ungodly (not like God, having a different lifestyle than God). C. In due time (God’s appointed time, appropriate time, destined time). D. Christ died for us (for our benefit, for our sake, on our behalf, in our stead, as our substitute). E. God’s love is uncommon and unbelievable. II. Notice we are sinners, yet God demonstrates His love for us. Romans 5:8, “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” The word “demonstrates” here means to show, prove, exhibit. It’s the present tense, meaning God is always showing and proving His love for us. The word “sinners” refers to a man who is sinful. How? • By disobeying God • By living selfishly • By ignoring God’s commandments • By doing our own thing • By the lust of the flesh • By the lust of the eyes • By the pride of life Here’s the point. While we were yet sinning, God proved His love by stooping down to save us. I would expect Him to save righteous people but He catches us off guard when He stoops to save sinners. That’s the unbelievable love of God! 1. God proved His love by giving up His Son to die for us. It’s one thing to give your son to fight for a good cause such

Romans 5:9, “Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him.” 3. God proves His love by saving us from wrath. John 3:36, “He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.” III. Notice we were enemies, yet God reconciled and saved us. Romans 5:10, “For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life.” God reconciles and saves us by doing three things: God reconciles us by Christ’s death, God saves us by Christ’s life, and God gives us joy through the atonement or reconciliation of Christ. Romans 5:11, “And not only that, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation.” A person who receives all this love from God will not be able to contain the joy. Rejoicing will take place! This is a fact. That’s how much God loves us. Embrace that love today.

or many people, the holiday season is a time of celebration and reliving
past traditions. We see Christmas movies on TV, hear carolers singing, peruse all the holiday gift options, but for some people, especially seniors, the holidays can be a time of frustration
and depression. There are many reasons that people may lapse into the “holiday blues” —illness, injury, frustration with the aging process, loss of a spouse, or just seasonal depression—but what really matters is that you find ways to prevent depression from happening. With the holiday season in full swing, consider some of the options listed below to help support yourself or your loved ones. Stop setting unrealistic expectations—It’s easy to want to do everything, but give yourself a break! It is essential to lower your expectations for the holidays and avoid putting unrealistic pressure on yourself. Stay active & eat healthy—Try doing something new! Spend time with people who won’t allow you to isolate yourself. Pay careful attention to

Joy of the Gift erry Christmas! What a wonderful time of year when we see beautiful decorations and indulge in savory foods and sugary sweets while gathering with family and friends to celebrate by giving and receiving gifts. Furthermore, who can resist the singing of festive songs (even if you don’t sing, you know humming along counts) while sipping coffee, hot cocoa, and all the other festive hot beverages? Riding through town and seeing all the lights, the stores packed with shoppers, and bells ringing reminds us that joy is a mindset that we just can’t afford to live without. This is a perfect time to remember the truest reason for this amazing season. The greatest gift ever given is also the most wonderful gift we can ever receive. The joy of the Gift is found by faith in Him. Of whom do I speak? We find the prophet Isaiah in Chapter 6 heralding the coming Messiah when he says, “For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” So, the greatest gift that has ever or will ever be given is the Gift from God who is His Son, Jesus! The greatest Gift that must be received for salvation is this same Jesus! There are two specific accounts in the New Testament that showcase the joy of receiving the baby Messiah. First, in the Gospel of Luke 2:28-32, we find Simeon who “took Him up in his arms and blessed God and said: ‘Lord, now You are letting Your servant depart in peace, According to Your word; For my eyes have seen Your salvation, Which You have prepared before the face of all peoples, A light to bring revelation to the Gentiles, And the glory of Your people Israel.’” The second encounter is Anna in Luke 2:36-38, “Now there was one, Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was of a great age, and had lived with a husband seven years from her virginity; and this

woman was a widow of about eighty-four years, who did not depart from the temple, but served God with fasting and prayer night and day. And coming in that instant she gave thanks to the Lord, and spoke of Him to all those who looked for redemption in Jerusalem.” Both Simeon and Anna rejoiced in their old age to have lived to see the promised Savior.
Of course, we know that shepherds saw the infant in the humblest of settings. Wise men traveled a great distance to offer gifts to the newborn King and then chose to return to their own homes after being warned in a dream. All received the newborn King with joy and witnessed the miracle of God’s gift to the world. So, the question is, will you share in their joy this Christmas season? The greatest Gift ever given is the Son of man. The greatest Gift you will ever receive is the Son of God. They are one and the same. Christ came as a baby, lived as a man, defeated death on the cross, overwhelmed the grave in the resurrection, and sits at the right hand of the Father awaiting us for eternity—if we will just receive Him. The Glorious Purpose of Prayer hough I have known for a long time that there are cracks in my armor, it was not until recently that I discovered to what extent. The largest of them is the most surprising. I have always considered myself rather adept at prayer but now must humbly admit otherwise. The vulnerability created by my intercessory failings is quite eye-opening. The issue is not one of consistency or sincerity. I have always viewed prayer as central in my walk with Jesus. The culprit is inadequate application. I have taken what is a dynamic means of grace and repeatedly reduced it to a singular objective. My beseeching, to the exclusion of almost everything else, has revolved around the relief from life’s daily burdens. There is certainly a place for such sentiment when I seek the Lord’s face. He wants that which weighs upon me to be offered up. But, if prayer is not deployed beyond this isolated need, it as spiritual weaponry will never defend as intended. My shield against the darts of the evil one will continue to be compromised, unnecessarily exposing my soul to harm. Compare my petitions to Paul’s: “And so, from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God” (Colossians 1:9-10, ESV). What Paul desired for the church in Colossae was nothing short of massive. He was not petitioning the Lord for a conflict-free existence. He was not asking that their difficulties be removed. What Paul sought for the Colossians was the quintessential purpose of prayer: to intimately know Jesus and His will. There is no higher aim. He wanted them to understand the extraordinary designs the Lord has for their lives. It is what transcends the hardships and leads to a Christ-exalting life of obedience and faithfulness. Paul’s approach to intercession has slowly infiltrated mine; the operative word here being “slowly.” I continue

to surrender my daily challenges but have begun doing so in the context of Jesus’s larger plan for my life. And not coincidentally, I have become less concerned with the circumstantial and thus more apt to fight the temptation of fear and anxiety. This has freed me to start pursuing His aims with greater intentionality. In other words, the cracks in my armor are beginning to seal.
While I still have much to learn, I am discovering that steady application of the practical bears fruit. I have instituted a new routine, for example, where—prior to bowing my head—time is spent reviewing a note I recently scribbled on the inside cover of my Bible. It reads as follows. “Request from Jesus: I would desire what He desires; I would love what He loves; I would despise what He despises; I would find increasing joy in what honors Him; I would follow Him in faith.” Though it felt mechanical at first—and still does to a degree—these themes help prepare my mind. They get the focus off of me and onto the Lord. May my prayer life and yours be an aggressive pursuit of knowing Jesus and His glorious will for our lives. And may the quest have the intended effect: a walk that becomes fully pleasing to Him. About The Author

Community Partnership: Habitat for Humanity - Coosa Valley

abitat for Humanity- Coosa Valley has been creating safe and affordable houses for families throughout the community since 1984. Habitat for Humanity’s homeownership program is rooted in a mission to reflect God’s love to all individuals. This program helps partner families achieve their goal of homeownership and provides opportunities for community members to use their Godgiven gifts. Together, forever homes are built!
In May of 2021, Habitat for Humanity- Coosa Valley was blessed to be able to select two partner families and future Habitat homeowners: the Bowers family and the Chambers family. “The Habitat home will be a sense of stability and security for the girls and I. We will finally have something

that we know is ours for a lifetime. I’m so grateful because I honestly did not think it would be something I would ever be able to obtain for them,” said Ms. Bowers. How To Become a Partner Family Habitat for Humanity is a hand-up, not a hand-out for families. Habitat for Humanity’s homeownership program is a partnership with families in our community. Homes are sold, not given, to approved homeowner applicants. These applicants demonstrate a need for housing, an ability to pay, and a willingness to partner. Criteria: 1. A need for simple, decent, and affordable housing, as defined by one or more of the following: substandard living conditions, unsafe living environment, temporary housing, cost burden, and or overcrowding. 2. An ability to pay a 25–30-year interest-free mortgage. 3. A willingness to partner, including the fulfillment of 300 “sweat equity” hours of volunteer work and participation in required educational classes and approved community activities.
This selection process is managed by Habitat for Humanity’s Board of Directors who select applicants facing the greatest need—of which, cost burden and overcrowding pose the two largest struggles our community is facing right now. This includes families who are paying more than 30% of their annual income on rent or families who live in multiple-family homes. After reviewing an applicant’s application and needs, the Family Selection Committee conducts a home visit to assess needs in person. This allows for the Committee to talk with families one-on-one and tour their current housing conditions. Once a family is selected and approved into Habitat for Humanity’s homeownership program, the family can begin fulfilling their “sweat equity” hours. Partner families invest hundreds of hours of their own labor in building their home and the houses of others. The labor reduces the cost of the house while increasing their pride of ownership. Families also complete their hours working at the Habitat ReStore or in the affiliate office. “Sweat equity” hours are intended for every member of the family to contribute, even the children! Children are eligible to contribute 20 hours based on academic performance. This includes A-B report cards and attendance. “This is a way for the children to contribute and feel a part of the process,” said Betsy Allgood, Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity- Coosa Valley. The guiding principle behind “sweat equity” hours is to provide partner families the ability to give back to the community that is giving to them. Partner families are encouraged to work with other non-profits throughout the community and contribute to local church and school events. Family and friends are also able to contribute 1/3 of the family’s total hours. Together, “sweat equity” volunteer hours are a family affair—parents, grandparents, children, aunts, uncles, and cousins all have the opportunity to foster family connections and support the surrounding community. Partner families must complete half of the total hours before Groundbreaking, which begins 2-3 months after approval.
The whole home construction process averages around 16-18 months, depending on the number of donations and volunteers. Throughout this process, partner families are met with community support. Each partner family is paired with a mentor—an individual from the community who can guide the family on decision making and preparations as first-time homebuyers. This process enables families to step into homeownership with confidence, excitement, and a strong sense of pride. Applications for Habitat for Humanity’s homeownership program open this year on Friday, December 17. Expect The Victory Once, I remember playing an extremely difficult game when I was getting discouraged until I had this revelation: Would I enjoy this game right now if I knew ahead of time that we were going to win?
There was no doubt that when we started training for our upcoming soccer season, we would be running sprints. In nearly all sports, running plays some role in an athlete’s training. I never questioned that sprinting would make me a better soccer player and prepare me for the upcoming games, so why do I question God when trials come into my life? We live in a broken, sin-wrecked world. My training for my Christian walk (or maybe I should say “my Christian run”) will include difficulties. God has warned us ahead of time through His Word to expect trials and tribulations.

Here’s the truth. When you put your faith in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, you can’t lose. I’m not saying that it’s going to be an easy game. You still might end up with some bumps and bruises along the way, but Jesus has already secured the victory. Take the advice from 1 Peter 5:6-7, 10 (NIV): “Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. o you need a tasty, showstopping dessert, but you are running short on time? This
easy Brownie Trifle recipe is a semihomemade dessert that is big on flavor. I always bring home an empty dish and receive frequent requests for the recipe whenever I serve this.
Ingredients • 1 box of brownie mix (18.3-ounces), prepared as directed on the package • 1 (3-ounces) package of instant chocolate pudding mix, prepared as directed on the package • 1 (3-ounces) milk chocolate candy bar, chopped OR ½ cup of milk chocolate chips • 3 Heath candy bars, chopped OR 1 cup of toffee chips, divided in half • 1 (12-ounces) container of whipped topping • 3 tablespoons of hot fudge ice cream topping, warmed

Instructions 1. Prepare the brownies as directed on the package. Allow the brownies to cool. 2. While the brownies are cooling, prepare the instant chocolate pudding mix as directed on the package. 3. Crumble the prepared brownies into a clear 1-quart dish.
4. Spread the chocolate pudding evenly over the crumbled brownies.
5. Top the pudding mixture with the milk chocolate chips or the chocolate candy bar.
6. Sprinkle ½ of the toffee chips or ½ of the chopped toffee bars onto the pudding mixture. 7. Spread the whipped topping over the chip and toffee layer.
8. Drizzle the warmed hot fudge sauce and the warmed caramel sauce over the whipped topping. 9. Store in the refrigerator before serving. This recipe may be made up to 24 hours ahead.
