WWJD? by David Strickland
I
n ’90s Christian culture, there was a popular bracelet among teenagers that was made up of four letters: WWJD? It was based off of the book “In His Steps” by
Charles Sheldon. The premise of the WWJD movement was to ask yourself a simple question: What would Jesus do? Whatever you do and any situation you find yourself in, ask yourself what Jesus would do. Whether it be in your job or at your school, the idea was to ask the question. Today we find ourselves needing to ask such a question. This world is full of issues that we need
• Know What the Scriptures Say. We need to check ourselves to make sure we are living according to the Word. Jesus knew the Scriptures better than anyone. It’s important for us to know the Scriptures as well as we can so that we know what to do in any situation. • Take Action. Jesus was a man of action. He turned over the tables and challenged them to make the church a house of prayer (Matthew 21:12-13). Sometimes we will have to do
to ask this question of: racial injustice, a virus pandemic, unemployment, poverty, religious conflicts, etc. What would happen if we all took those four words seriously and put them into action? I believe we would see a world of difference. It also will help us if we knew what Jesus did. The most important thing that He did was spend time in the presence of God. There are four things that Jesus did that will help us answer this question for our own lives. • Be Still and Know that I am God (Psalm 46:10). Jesus often withdrew to lonely places to be with the Father (Luke 5:16). He got still before the Father and entered into a personal time of devotion to the Lord. He got away from the hustle and bustle of His busy life. For me, it means going outside early in the morning or late at night. I will often sit there with just the sounds of the birds singing in the morning or the crickets chirping at night. We need to sit in silence and listen, but sometimes we need to pour our hearts out to God. • Pray to God.
something as drastic as this. Jesus was at times mild, but at times He could be considered wild: not wild in a bad way, but wild in the sense that He did what some would consider radical as He was often battling with the “religious.” We will find our answers in the secret place. It’s the things that we can’t find that will often be revealed (Jeremiah 33:3). These things are revealed in His presence, but first, we have to slow down and be still.
Matthew 14:23 states, “After He had sent the crowds when it was evening, He was there alone.” Not only did Jesus get still before the Lord, but He prayed. It is through prayer that we ask the Lord, “What would Jesus do?”

busy working a full-time job and taking care of that farm. He had pastures that held his cattle and sometimes even a horse. Hopefully, the livestock would stay in the pasture, but sometimes they would get out. They would find that downed fence and stray across it into danger. My grandfather had a cattle dog that he would use to help get those cows rounded up and back into the fence. After getting them rounded up, it would then be necessary to find out where they had gotten out. Maybe some tree had fallen against the fence and it ended up on the ground. You would have to walk the fence line to find that break in the fence. It was a job that had to be done and the fence repaired

Lessons From Home like a lot of working adults, have had to change schedules, rearrange priorities, and learn to be a homeschool teacher during the past few months. COVID-19 has had so many impacts on our world. I never would have thought I would leave my office and our child would leave his classroom in March and not be able to return until months later. During this time, the lessons I have learned have been great and worth noting. March 2020 was a memorable time in our world. Many changes were occurring, and no one knew how to deal with the rising pandemic. We shifted from having offices at our jobs to having offices at our kitchen tables. We went from having face-to-face conversations to having conference calls while cooking lunch. I am a person who needs structure or I become lazy, a.k.a. sit on the couch and read all day! Therefore, I had a hard time with this new schedule for the first few weeks. Our fifth-grade son was learning through Zearn, Pathblazers, BrainPop, etc., and I would check his work. As he said a few times during the first few weeks, “Dad, I don’t think Mom and I work well together on schoolwork!” I can’t say that he was wrong. I am a slight perfectionist with a type-A personality, while he is slightly different. However, we have learned a lot about each other during this process, and I wouldn’t trade this time together for anything. Let’s move on to something else that’s been on my heart—socialization. Socialization—some of us need it more than others. I am one who needs people to talk to, people to hug, people to have dinner with, etc. At the beginning, it was hard for me to turn over the grocery store shopping to the Kroger app or to my husband because, after all, I see many people in Kroger who I stop and talk to while shopping—yes, I am that shopper! Nevertheless, I learned to do just that. Second, I am used to having my work friends ask, “What’s for lunch today?” around 10:00 a.m. I suddenly became the one planning lunch for my two at home. Don’t get me wrong: I have loved planning new meals and watching my kitchen

creations come to fruition. So I came up with a solution to my problem of needing social time. I called my parents and my father-in-law and asked if we could come sit on the front porch (six feet away from each other) and bring lunch. We had our social time, but it was just a little different. It helped everyone involved and gave us something to look forward to the next time we were “out and about.” The last few months have been full of quality family time, garden planting, football throwing, boat riding, and
movie nights at home. I have enjoyed seeing how we all have adapted to this “new normal.” My only wish is that when we come out of this pandemic, things will be back to normal, but also that we continue to hold onto the closeness that each of us has had at home with our families. I am looking forward to the time when holidays, birthdays, graduations, and other special occasions will be spent with our extended families in person and not through FaceTime, Zoom, or Google Hangouts. Until then, let’s just enjoy learning the “lessons from home.” About The Author

central complaint—not having enough energy—and she recommends a good, simple multivitamin by Life’s Fortune that customers can actually sample for three days before they decide to purchase it. “Honestly, when we give the samples out for three days, people come back and buy it because they feel better,” said Linda. It’s plant-based, contains several important enzymes, and customers routinely come back to purchase the product because they have more energy after just three days. You can buy a month’s supply of that specific product for just $29.99 or a two-month supply for $49.99, smoothly taking the load off your body without straining your wallet. Today, more and more people are becoming aware of natural vitamins and herbs versus taking chemical medication. When a customer comes in and sees that an herb works for what they need, they’d much rather take it than a prescription, whatever their problem may be. However, The Herb Shop ensures all of its products are routinely tested for quality by the manufacturers on a regular basis. Linda said, “We don’t sell anything that’s just randomly tested.” This focus on safety and excellence is what makes their products better than traditional options. If you’ve been wanting to try something other than traditional chemical medication, as many people across the nation are nowadays, The Herb Shop is here to help you choose a product that will work for you. As Linda put it, “We just want [customers] to achieve good health, and if we can help, that’s what we’re going to do.” If your old car is filled with rust, it won’t run properly, and your body is no different. The Herb Shop on Broad is ready to help clear out anything that might be holding you back, from aches and pains to a weak immune system to a general lack of energy. The Herb Shop offers veteran, teacher, and healthcare professional discounts, in addition
to a special “family and friends” discount for long-time, repeat customers—whether it be seniors or teens—as a way of rewarding that loyalty. Larry said, “We’re grateful for our customers and thankful for their business. We’ve done quite well and business has thrived because of our customers.” If you’d like to become one of their many satisfied shoppers, you can visit their Facebook page, @ theherbshoponbroad, call (706) 232-4447, or stop by the store at 103 Broad Street Rome, GA 30161. Desire vs. Sacrifice verything starts in the mind: a thought or notion of how to obtain or achieve something greater than the current state. Whether it be financially, emotionally, mentally, or physically, everything begins in the infant stage of the thought process. Thoughts manifest over a duration of time, and for those thoughts to become tangible, DESIRE is awakened. I personally had a desire when I was 440 lb. to lose weight and become much healthier. My want/desire to lose the weight had all the ingredients it needed to begin my weight-loss journey. But there was one ingredient missing that I was not prepared for: SACRIFICE. This is the intangible that discourages most people who start a new journey to quit just a short time after they have started. That was me for many years because my mind had the desire to do something I’d never done, and it required a level of sacrifice that was not met in my heart. Sacrifice is a heart condition, and it requires daily action. Desire is a mental condition that is bred through multiple thoughts/ questions of what you want versus whether or not can you do it. Sacrifice does not go against desire; sacrifice will define your desire. I was 440 lb., and in 15 months, I lost 243 lb. My desire was to do the unexpected, and my sacrifice for the unexpected showcased my desire. My heart wanted to keep my old nutritional habits, but in order to fully achieve my desire, I had to let go of my wants and establish my new needs. The fight is real when it comes to keeping the desire you initiated in your mind. It is a daily, uphill battle, but Vince Lombardi said it best: “The harder you work, the hard it is for you to surrender.” People always say quitting isn’t an option when truthfully, it always is. But quitting is also a heart condition. Just like the story of the two wolves living inside of you, the one you feed is the one that will be dominant in your
24 // August 2020
everyday life. Will you feed the heart that always leans toward quitting? Or will you feed the heart that sacrifices for its desire to become tangible? Quitting is easy and fast, with no accountability for you. Sacrifice requires long and slow suffering for a cause that started with a personal desire and evolves into something much bigger than you. It instills a fire in you that will never cease and a legacy to pass on to your children. As I fought every day in my journey, I realized that I wasn’t just fighting for me. I was fighting for
others who did not have the tools I developed during my journey and who one day I would help. My faith in Jesus Christ is how I sustained my level of sacrifice: walking by faith and not by sight. Christ sacrificed Himself for all of us because God had a desire for His people. I did not know I would end up here; I just had faith that my daily sacrifices of habitual changes would lead me somewhere greater than I started. Remember, sacrifice does not go against desire; sacrifice will define your desire. About The Author

God Is Still In Control
W
by Ashlee Abernathy
e are living in uncertain days, perhaps now more than ever before. It is hard to think about raising children in a world full of turmoil and unrest. My husband and I have two young boys, ages 7 and 2, and we often wonder if we are doing enough to teach our boys what they need to know to survive in such a time.
All children are exposed to so much on a daily basis, whether it be at school, on television, or in video games, just to name a few, and it can be hard for them to understand and decipher good from bad. Thankfully, we are equipped with the Word of God to help us train our children to walk in the way of Christ. Sometimes we forget we are actually not in control of any of it, but we have a Heavenly 26 // August 2020
Father who is. He is still on His throne, and He remains in control. God promises to always take care of His children. We know that our boys are ours only for a short time, and they are ultimately God’s children, but while we are on this earth, we must do our part to teach them to be Christlike. Proverbs 22:6 instructs us to “train up a child in the way he should go; and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” We can have hope for our children’s futures if we teach them to be followers of Christ. As parents, we are thankful for the time we have with our children, and we can have confidence that, with the help of the Lord, we can raise them to be Godfearing, Christian men and women, even though the world will be against them. After all, if God is for us, who can be against us? We all know that parenting is not always easy, but we can always cast our cares, frustrations, and uncertainties on Him because His yoke is easy and His burden is light. The good news is, in the midst of all the madness, we can find peace and rest in an unwavering Lord. Like the old song says, “… because He lives, I can face tomorrow; because He lives, all fear is gone.” What a wonderful, blessed assurance that is.

Please Help The Homeless To Know That I Love Them hen my children, Christy and Paul, were 3 and 4 years of age, I taught them the beloved children’s prayer, “Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep.” To teach them intercessory prayer, I instructed them to add, “…please bless Grandma and Papa…” at the end of the prayer. One morning, on our way to Sunday School, we noticed a homeless woman asleep in an exterior doorway of the church. It was very cold and windy and the woman was bundled up with a heavy coat and blankets. I always made everything a teachable moment. Like the time Paul asked me, “What’s inside a raindrop?” and we had a conversation about that. I was accustomed to Paul and Christy’s questions and I was sure they would ask about the homeless woman. That night, 3 year-old Christy said her bedtime prayers, “….guide me

safely through the night, and wake me with the sunshine bright. Please bless Grandma and Papa and please help the homeless to know that I love them.” The homeless woman was all alone and it is entirely probable that she felt invisible
and forgotten. At 3 years of age, Christy was applying what she learned about intercessory prayer. Ultimately, it was I who learned how to effectively pray for others. The teacher was my 3 year-old daughter. About The Author

That’s like being made to account for the words of a false prophet or a sketchy televangelist. But there is something we can do. mouth when you cough or sneeze and washing your hands thoroughly and frequently. These new habits will help in the future with any viral or contagious disease that you may encounter. Also of importance is the family time that we renewed while being confined to our homes. We saw a tremendous change across our nation and an outpouring of love and concern for our neighbors. Our belief in mankind was renewed. But that wasn’t sustained. Another severely wrong decision and action set forth a chain reaction of riots and threats which were a test of our good faith, but do not be dismayed by those who seek to tear down. As Paul put it, keep the faith. Everything is temporary, time doesn’t stop, and we keep moving on. The only things that never change are God the Father and His love for us. Never grow weary, and pray without ceasing. Colossians 1:11: “We also pray that you will be strengthened with all his glorious power so you will have all the endurance and patience you need. May you be filled with joy.” Claim it and name it. Claim all of God’s promises! Identify and name the issues and concerns in your life that are coming between you and your walk with Christ. Once you name those issues, then you can start to peel them back and remove them from your life. Never give up, but seek strength from Christ who strengthens us. Stand firm in your faith, believing in the power of the one true King. Matthew 10:22: “And all nations will hate you because you are my followers. But everyone who endures to the end will be saved.” Let that sink into your soul, like sitting outside soaking in the sunshine. Raise your hands and praise the God of all creation! Sonny’s Trees

y backyard joins a beautiful field of grasses and wildflowers that all merge at the top of a small rise where a red barn stands. It’s a calm, restful place to walk or look upon and relax. One thing stands out in that
field to me. There are 10 pecan trees proclaiming a remarkable story in that bountiful field. Sonny, my neighbor, planted the trees. Although he was aware he would probably not enjoy the pecans from these trees, he planted them anyway. He wanted someone to enjoy them. He also understood those individuals would probably never know about him and his trees. He was okay with that. Sonny understood how to be a blessing 36 // August 2020
for another person. First of all, he wanted to do it. He wanted to give this to another person. Second, he put the work into it and planted the trees. Third, he maintained and nourished the trees in their critical time. Finally, he was thankful to God that he had the opportunity to plant these trees for people in the future. Oh, and one more thing: Sonny never boasted about all of this. Other people told his story (actually, it sort of slipped out), but he never did. That was Sonny’s way. Always smiling, happy, and pleasant, he shared with everyone and made the lives of those around him much better. He was blessed and wanted others to be blessed. That meant giving time, energy, effort, and attention without asking for praise. It meant planting trees when almost no one knew and knowing he would never enjoy the fruits. Not long ago, Sonny lost a battle with cancer. His powerful faith and witness never diminished. It’s not the same without him. In the field, I see Sonny’s trees, and I want to plant a tree.

Covered in His Feathers 020 started with my dad beginning chemo treatments and my oldest daughter fighting pneumonia (which included a hospital stay). My nerves were on edge, and my anxiety was HIGH. So why not add a global pandemic on top of all that, right? I’ll admit that in early March, when the Coronavirus arrived in Rome, I was a nervous wreck. I knew I was feeling anxiety that I’d never felt before. I also KNEW it was time to heavily rely on my faith. On Wednesday, March 11, I looked through the variety of the podcasts in my phone, praying to find one that would speak directly to what I was feeling. I can’t remember the title to the one I found, but I do recall it was about relying on the Lord when you feel scared. The Scripture passage for this episode was Psalm 91. It wasn’t a passage I’d studied in the past. I couldn’t recall ever hearing about what verse 4 says: “He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.” The study leader told the story about how her teenage daughter was involved in a scary car accident and how this woman was hours away from her daughter. All she could do was pray for her until she could get to her. Specifically, she prayed for the Lord to “cover” her daughter. Her daughter thankfully walked away without being seriously hurt. This woman’s friend told her that she had come upon the accident not long after it had happened. She walked up to the scene because she recognized the car. This friend recalled thinking, “There’s no way this will go well.” And then, at her feet, right next to the driver’s door—was a feather. I had chills when I heard this. Back to that week. When I got home that Wednesday, I received a text from someone in whom I’d confided my fears. It read, “The Lord wanted me to share this with you. Hold on to the words of Psalm 91.” Chills! Two days later was Friday, March 13, the day I was sent home to work like many others. That morning, I prayed Psalm 91 over and over. I don’t recall what brought this song to mind, but I pulled up “You Cover Me” by Prestonwood Choir and
38 // August 2020
listened to it that morning. The song is taken straight from Psalm 91! It was maybe the second time I’d ever heard it, but the Lord brought it to me that morning. That night, the atmosphere was very strange with everything happening and the heightened sense of nervousness all around. I opened my Bible to Psalm 91 and left it open to that passage for weeks. My husband noticed it and asked me, “Do you not know what’s on my arm?” He raised his sleeve to show me a tattoo I knew was there—a male angel with very large wings. I thought, “So what, I’ve seen it before.” But then, I noticed the writing above his tattoo. Chills covered my arms and tears filled my eyes because I knew then all these
little things were no coincidence. Our sweet Heavenly Father was reaching down to me, some worried mama in Rome, Georgia. Right above my husband’s tattoo was, “Psalm 91.” I knew the Lord was telling me, “I’m covering you.” How precious it is to know that our God, who is hearing MILLIONS of prayers at the same time, especially during times of chaos and uncertainty, reached down to remind me, “I will COVER you.” Don’t ever think He isn’t listening to you, that He’s not hearing you. Just be sure that you are ready to hear Him when He speaks.

Easy-Peasy Fruit Salad Recipe by Pam Wattenbarger
T
his is an easy, versatile fruit salad with a 10-minute prep time. The pudding mix will blend with the fruit juices to create a sweet, creamy base that enhances the flavor of the fruit. Naturally glutenfree, it’s the perfect recipe for summer when fresh fruits are in season. Don’t like strawberries or peaches? Substitute your favorite fruit instead. Good substitutions are blueberries, raspberries, or blackberries.
Ingredients • 4 peaches, peeled and cubed • 1 (16-ounce) container of strawberries, washed, stems removed, and sliced • 3 bananas, peeled and sliced
1. In a medium bowl, mix the peaches, strawberries, and bananas together gently. 2. Stir in the instant vanilla pudding mix until the fruit mixture is coated. 3. Refrigerate until serving. This is best made an hour in advance to allow the flavors to meld.
