Gò0dNews from the Pastor's Desk by Donald Cantrell

he world was swiftly eroding away and the stench of their sinfulness was permeating the very nostrils of God. The time had come for God to deal with the debauchery and deviancy of mankind. In doing so, what if he wiped everyone off the face of the earth, was his plan for the entire world to end? The Bible talks about “the other side of the flood” and the thought came to me that Noah and his wife, his three sons, and his three daughterin-laws, were the only ones that lived life on both sides of the flood. If you read the entire story of Noah, you will realize that he was no superhero. In looking down upon the sinful world, there was only one man that God deemed to recognize with his grace and that man was Noah. Genesis 6:8 says, “But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD” (KJV). This does not mean that he was without sin, but it does mean that he strived to live for his God. God likes “normal people” because he made a whole lot of “normal people.” We are not exactly sure how many years it took Noah to build that big boat, but it was possibly 100 to 120 years. He had his three sons around the age of 500 and the flood occurred when he was 600 years old. It is possible that Noah had begun to build on the ark before the boys were born and continued the process, maybe even with the help of his three sons. Noah was merely a “normal man” but he was given an extremely abnormal task. I wonder how many of us would stick to a task for over 100 years and see it to completion? Noah and Jesus were very similar in their human characteristics, though Noah was a sinner and Jesus was sinless. Noah offered the world a new beginning and of course Jesus was the new way and the new beginning. Noah built an ark of safety for anyone that would enter and Jesus is the ark of salvation for any person that is willing to trust in him. Noah was a builder; the Bible says that he built an ark and an altar. Jesus was a

6 // August 2018

builder; he built the church and died upon the altar of Mount Calvary. We need “normal” men and women that will go all in for the Lord Jesus Christ. The Lord may have made you “normal” but he may have plans for you to do the extraordinary and something beyond normal. Noah built that ark and he invested in his family. In the end, Noah and his entire immediate family entered into that ark and to me that was beyond ordinary or normal. God is making “normal” people everyday and in turn he is choosing “normal” people to perform “abnormal tasks”. If you are looking for someone to mimic, you may want to mimic “Normal Noah.”

ear God, How are you? My name is Malcolm. I am 9 years old. I’m doing good too. Well... Maybe not so good. You see I had I kind of got into trouble with my dad. He kind of told me to take the trash out and I kind of forgot because I was playing my game on my video. I was winning the race on my favorite game and I couldn’t stop. My dad didn’t like it when I said I would get to it later. Well, Dad told me that I should pray about my attitude. So he sent me to my room. When I got to my room, I thought about a few things when it comes to praying. I thought about how it can be a little scary. Do you really hear me? And am I doing this right? I didn’t think that I really knew how to pray. I have seen other people pray in church. It seems like it would be kind of scary to pray in front of all those people. My dad says that I don’t have to worry about all those people. He said that praying is just like sitting down and talking to my best friend at school. I can talk to my best friend it’s cool about everything. Dad said You are my best friend. He said that you are a friend that sticks closer then a brother. My brother is pretty cool. He’s a little older than me though. I am sometimes a little worried that you don’t hear me. Dad said that in the book of Jeremiah that it says it when we call on you that you will answer us and show us Great and

8 // August 2018

Mighty wonderful things that we can’t figure out for ourselves. That’s way too cool. My dad also said that in James it says someone who is following you with their whole heart would do a lot in prayer. So I know that you hear me because the Bible tells me so. I asked Mom about if I was doing it the right way. I have seen some people stand up, some people sit down like we do when we eat and some people lie on the floor and pray. I thought one person was asleep but they were really praying (Haha). Mom said that when we worship you we must worship you and pray with a true and honest heart. She said that it doesn’t really matter or make a difference if we are standing or sitting. Although she said a lot of times we close our eyes so that we can not worry about anything around us. We also bow our heads so that we can honor God. You know God, praying is like writing this letter. I feel like we are best friends. I think that I will keep writing as my prayer to you. Thank you for changing my heart. Thank you for loving me. Your friend, Malcolm

So when Paul says “godliness is beneficial in every way, since it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come” it is a wonderful reminder that we must keep the main thing the main thing. As men and Christians, we must never lose sight of the most important call on our life. We are called to lead our households spiritually and to make disciples. Godliness is beneficial in every way. Wait

ho loves to wait? We often find ourselves judging events in our life based on how long we wait. The doctor’s appointment was fine but I had to wait an hour to see the doctor or our meal was delicious but we had to wait 45 minutes to be seated. No one likes to wait. Disney has turned our inability to wait into a way to make money - fast pass anyone? Our time has become more valuable than our money. Wait has become a four-letter word in our society right up there with select curse words. But is waiting actually bad? I found over 60 references in scripture on waiting. God encourages waiting. He not only wants us to wait for Him, but He wants us to do it expectantly and with faith. That is not an easy thing to do. Scripture is full of stories of how long some people had to wait for God to fulfill his promises. Noah waited 125 years for the flood. Moses wandered in the wilderness for 40 years before God called him into service. Abraham didn’t become the Father of all Nations until he was over 100. And the list does go on! So, what happens when we find ourselves right in the middle of God’s waiting room? Are you waiting on healing that hasn’t come? Or are you waiting on the perfect spouse or job? Scripture encourages us to use this time to prepare ourselves for God’s action. Perhaps we have some spiritual maturing to do before He acts. We should use our time to focus on God’s word and filling our hearts with His promises that are in the Bible. Rest assured, God always keeps His promises and His timing is always perfect.

14 // August 2018

“Delay doesn’t mean denial,” Rick Warren often says. He also reminds us that there is a season of waiting between planting and harvesting and that season is growth. These times of growth happens when we dive into God’s word and spend time with Him in prayer. Rick also reminds us that while we are waiting, God is working. This is where we have to trust His perfect timing and plan. Apostle Paul states in Romans 8:25, “But if we hope for what we don't see, we eagerly wait for it with

perseverance.” So, what will you do while you wait for God? Don’t be tempted to lose hope and think that He has forgotten about you. Remember that waiting produces perseverance and character. Lean into Him during your time of waiting with expectancy, and prepare for a season of spiritual growth.

Gò0dNews for Parents

Are You Listening? ow many times have you said to your child, “Are you listening to me”? As I look at the word listen I thought, “What can we learn from the word itself to better communicate with our children?” Love: Children need to be loved unconditionally. We understand that kind of love because we are loved by God unconditionally. There is nothing we can do to make God love us more or nothing we can do to make Him love us less. Children need to know that kind of parental love. Invest: When you hear the word invest, do you think in terms of financial provisions for your child? That is certainly an important goal, but not the most important investment. Parents need to invest in spending time with their child. Children want to spend time with their parents and that is how they understand love. You need to invest in their physical, mental, emotional/social, and spiritual lives. In Luke 2:52, (AMP) we read, “And Jesus kept increasing in wisdom and in stature, and in favor with God and men.” He kept increasing, who were his teachers? His parents, Mary and Joseph, invested time with him. Support: It is important for parents to recognize the individual traits and personalities of their children. Often parents get caught up in what they want their children to do rather than recognizing the child’s interest. Just because a parent liked to play ball or play the trumpet does not mean their child will. Perhaps this is a time the parents need to listen to the children. Trust: In the world we live in today it seems harder to know who to trust. Children should always know they can trust their parents. We are assured by God that we can trust Him to meet our

needs. Parents need to assure their children with the same kind of trust. Engage: There are so many demands on everyone’s time it is easy to lose focus on priorities. We are so busy, we tend to overschedule our lives and the lives of our children. This leaves little time for family time. We should choose wisely the activities that children are allowed to do. Family time should be a priority for engagement with your children. Nurture: We read in Proverbs 22:6 (NIV), “Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.” One of parent’s greatest responsibilities is to nuture their children in the ways of the Lord. We are reminded in Psalm 127:3 “Children are a gift from God, they are his reward”. Parents are to provide for and nurture the gift God has given to them. When they do, their children will really listen to them. So the next time you find yourself saying. “Are you listening to me? Think of what you are really asking! Have you listened to yourself in providing for your child’s needs?

opportunity to be an example to your spouse, children, and other loved ones and encourage them to take care of their gift, too. Each one of my clients and class participants bring something to our professional relationship that teaches me and encourages me. The lessons that stick out to me the most and touch my heart are the ones where someone has or is going through a serious health crisis and has still chosen to continue to be active, if allowed, and the ones who have chosen to, essentially, start from scratch. They have seen health scares, they have gone through treatments, they have endured pain and suffering - yet they choose to continue. They choose to pick up a set of weights, or they choose to step foot into a class, or they simply get on a walking trail - and they go. This mindset can be applied to anyone, no matter where you are. Just go. Each day we are on this earth is a day to be a light for this tired and hurting world around us. If we neglect the home our souls reside in, the home that our Lord and Savior abides in - how can we expect ourselves to be the best light we can be? The best cars take premium gas to run most efficiently why would you put anything less than premium in your precious body? Fuel it right, treat it well, get it moving - and GO.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 - “…Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies…” n my profession, I am honored to get to help individuals each and every day take strides to improve their health. Through teaching group classes to private training, I get to work with a wide variety of people and help them reach their goals. The last 6 months, God has really placed on my heart the significance of what I am allowed to do - and, I believe part of this is because the fragility of our health and life has been heavy in my mind the last several months. Health can be a very precarious thing and there is so much sickness and tragedy that floods our world. The gift of health is precious and often I find myself crying out in gratitude of how thankful I am for having a well and able body. Life is so short - it’s meant to be lived and lived well and it is truly our responsibility to treat our bodies well. While each of us have personal goals, we all should have a common goal of being kind to our physical body. We know as believers our souls are our true beings and this earthly body will one day fade away - but what about now? What about today? God has commanded us to be a good steward of the gifts we have been given and I whole heartedly believe each day we wake up, breathing, and alive is a gift. Each day is an opportunity to fuel your body with whole, real food. It’s an opportunity to get outside and be active. It’s an opportunity to get rest and renew our bodies and mind. It’s an

Servanthood by Lebron Arwine

Self-discipline is vital to being successful. In life, you won't always have people to push you and encourage you but you have to find it within yourself to focus and be disciplined! There are three principles I have learned to live by that have set me up for success. When you are provided with an opportunity to pursue your BIG dreams, you must operate in Excellence, Honor, and Servanthood! Operating in excellence does not mean that you have to be perfect. When you take risks, you will drop the ball and fail form time to time; but when operating in excellence, there are things that you can control. You can control being prepared, being punctual, having a great attitude!

26 // August 2018

Honor is very important when pursuing your dreams. It’s easy to honor people in whom you admire and look up to. Where the rubber meets the road is when you choose to honor the people around you that you don’t feel like honoring to accomplish and reach your goals. That is called character! The final principle that I live by is servanthood. “If you want to become great among men, you must become the most servant of all!” (Matthew 20:26-27). It doesn't matter if you are on the bottom or at the very top, keep your heart in a posture of servanthood. Never become too proud to serve your neighbor. Pattern your life after these principles, set big goals, and stay disciplined, and you will be successful and can achieve whatever you set your heart to do!

That’s what I call “numbering my days” so that wisdom allows me to live life fully. So if you find yourself in my position, what can you do to recharge that battery? Be advised that my degrees are in Music and not Medicine so with that disclaimer here are my suggestions. 1. Make rest and sleep a priority. This is hard for me since I’m a night owl. Zucchini Bread by Deanna Thompson

reads come in all kinds, shapes, and sizes. Whether it is a yeast bread or a batter bread (like zucchini bread), the main ingredient of the bread is the flour, which comes from wheat kernels. Wheat kernels can be stored for thousands of years if they are kept cool and dry, and they can remain dormant for many years in dry areas (like a desert) until the rains come. Once a wheat kernel comes in contact with water and warmth, however, the seed “dies” and changes its form to become a new plant. This new plant looks nothing like the seed it came from, just like a caterpillar looks nothing like the butterfly it becomes. Yet, the new plant will produce many seeds—perhaps hundreds or even thousands—that do look like the single seed from which the plant sprang forth. As Jesus said in John 12:24, “Unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it produces much grain.” If a wheat kernel is stored in a bucket, it will remain safe, but it will only remain the same one kernel; if the kernel “dies” by being planted, it will produce many seeds. Paralleling this, Jesus goes on to say in the next verse, “He who loves his life will lose it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life.” If we love our life so much that we want to keep it “safe” and comfortable, enjoying the sin life we were born into, we will lose our life for eternity. However, if we hate our lives in this world—not hating living but hating our lives in the sinful world we were born into, hating the sin we are prone to do, and hating being separated from God—then we will keep our lives for eternity. So, will you be the wheat kernel kept in the bucket, safe and comfortable, loving the world you are in but not changing the world for God and producing seeds for His Kingdom? Or will you be the wheat kernel thrown to the wet ground, hidden from the sun and from view for a time, to undergo a complete metamorphosis so that you can be all God created you to be and produce fruit for Him?

What would they want? What would I want? So, let’s talk a minute about planning. We plan all the time, for graduations, weddings, birth of that first precious grandchild. How well do we plan for ourselves? The best thing any of us can do for our loved ones is talk to them while we are well. What is perceived as a hard conversation may in fact be a relief for your family. Even if it feels awkward and you meet with some resistance, carry on. Who is the Enemy? or we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places” (Ephesians 6:12, KJV). At some point, we have all been frustrated or angry with someone, whether it was a family member, a friend, or a stranger. There is a temptation to take out our frustrations on others when this happens. Is that the right thing to do? What is the proper response? The Apostle Paul wrote the letter to the Ephesians while he was in prison. He was not guilty of breaking any crime; he was arrested for telling others about Jesus. It would have been easy for him to have anger towards those that put him in jail. During this trial, he imparted to the Ephesians a powerful revelation. He shared that people (flesh and blood) are not our enemies! Our adversaries are the spiritual forces of darkness (see also Eph. 2:2, I Peter 5:8). Let’s take a moment to review what happened to Paul while he was in the city of Ephesus (Acts 19:23-41). In this city lived a silversmith named Demetrius. He made money making idols of the pagan goddesses Diana. As Paul preached, people were getting rid of their idols and giving their lives to Jesus. As would be expected, this caused a decline in the idol trade. Demetrius stirred up other worshipers of this goddess and made them angry at Paul. Eventually, an entire mob of people gathered to oppose him. In the middle of this commotion, we learn that “…the assembly was confused, and most of them did not know why they had come together” (Acts 19:32, NKJV).

30 // August August2018 2018 34 //

Many of the people who opposed Paul did not even know why they were there. There was even confusion in the crowd. Why did this happen? They were being manipulated by powers and principalities to oppose Paul. God is not the author of confusion (I Cor. 14:33a). For another example, we can look at Peter. In Matthew 16:21, Jesus told the disciples that He was going to be arrested, killed, and raised back to life. Peter opposed this very thought and tried to convince him this would not happen. Jesus responded by saying, “Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men” (Matthew 16:23). Jesus recognized the power that spoke through Peter at that moment. In life, it is so tempting to take out our frustrations on other people because we can see them with our natural eyes. We must learn that our enemy is satan. He comes to steal, kill, and destroy (John 10:10). He is the deceiver (Rev. 12:9). When people mistreat or oppose you, learn to look at the spiritual forces behind the attack. It will transform your frustration into prayer and help you love others.

The God Who Sees by Dorothy Teague

36 40 //// August August2018 2018

About The Author

ow many times have we strayed off the path God has for us, tried to rush God’s timing, and took a BIG detour? We get tired of being in the “waiting room” and decide to take matters into our own hands. We arrogantly try to wrest control from God, thinking WE know better! When we engage in a detour, God is not pleased, but He understands. He understands “we are dust” (Psalm 103:14). He still loves us because we are His children. 1 Corinthians 13:11 says, we need to put away childish things when we are older and walk in our faith as God would have us to. God is omnipresent. He sees us where we are now, where we’ve been, and where we are going to be in the somedays of our life. As Genesis 16:13 states, “He is the God Who sees.” We are not the first to make the mistake of stepping out of God’s timing. Cue Abraham and Hagar, and, let’s not forget Sarai. They all played a part of trying to rush God’s plan of making Abraham the Father of many nations. They waited and waited for the child God had promised. Nothing happened, so they decided to put a plan of their own together. It was Sarai that suggested Abraham “go in and lie with her(Hagar),” so that they might have a child, since Sarai was barren. Abraham did not argue with her and Hagar became pregnant. Sarah got angry and jealous, and Hagar was sent off into the desert to fend for herself. Abraham was a man caught in the middle of a very bad plan, but aren’t our plans always flawed? Even though God wasn’t happy with their actions, He took pity on Hagar and told her she would have a son, Ishmael (which would become the Father of the Arab nation). Hagar said, “You are the God who sees.” Truer words could not be spoken. God sees our sin, but also sees our sorrow and pain. He sees our tears and keeps them all in a bottle (Psalm 56:8). God is present everywhere and at all times. There is no place where He is not. Jeremiah 23:24 says, “Can a man hide himself in secret places so that I can not see Him?” Psalm 139:7-10 asks “Where shall I flee from Your presence?” Job 34:21 states that “His eyes are on the ways of man and He sees all his steps.” Yes, God is the God Who sees us right where we are, with all our flaws and failures, stains and sorrows, and He loves us anyway. But, as my pastor, Dr. Tony Crisp says, “He loves us too much to leave us there” in the mess that we made of our lives by stepping out of His will. It’s then that He picks us up out of our mess and turns it into a message that we can tell others in order to glorify Him!

n today’s society, sports activities and working on weekends has made going to church when we feel like it the way to go. Others say it is easy to not go to church because we don’t fit in with people or nobody will miss us if we were gone. For every one reason we can think of to not go to church, there are five reasons we should go. The Bible refers to members of churches as brothers and sisters. Church is a gathering of people who want to commit to their spiritual walk with others rather than alone. The best part of attending is so we can find out our purpose. Jeremiah 29:11 tells us that the Lord has plans for us. As members get to know you they can offer encouragement into your plan. Being part of a church has many benefits to get great help when trying to figure out your place and where you fit. Another reason is so we can worship. We can worship anytime, anyplace. In our car, at work, or at home, but nothing is better than being with other worshipers and signing to the top of our lungs to God. After worship we can hear someone share the word so we can learn more about it. We don’t all study and read our Bible as we should. But hearing it helps us to understand and gain a different perspective of explanation. When we attend church we can find new friends that we can have for life. The Bible tells us that church members are the body of Christ.

38 // August 2018

When we make friends at church we are forever bound to them through our desire to follow Christ. We can all use some new friends that can relate to our everyday issues in life. When we become Christians, we are called into a relationship with God. 1 John 1:3 says that we enter a fellowship with God and other Christians. The New Testament never divides Christians into members and nonmembers. It simply asserts that everybody participates in their local assembly. In Acts 20:7, it shows the practice of the early church, “On the first day of the week, the disciples came together to break bread, and Paul preached to them.” For Christians everywhere, regular gathering needs to be a way of life. The one verse that tells us why we should go to church is Hebrews 10:25, “not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the day approaching.” Get in the habit of going to church on a regular basis. The good will always be better than the bad. God will present opportunities to you because of your faithfulness.
