The business provides two distinct services. Action Outdoor Power is an independent Stihl dealer that has been in Rome for over 35 years and under its current name for almost 10. All of the employees you will talk to at Action Outdoor Power are certified technicians who know each piece of equipment inside and out. Employees continually take annual education courses to stay up to date with the latest equipment and technology, so you know you’ll be talking to an expert right away. That means they can find the perfect tool to match your exact need! Sales manager Heather Hapner said, “Some people come in wanting equipment that’s 22 // April 2021

top of the line, but we want to make sure that our customers are taken care of with something that they need.” You don’t have to worry about leaving with too much power or too little left in the bank account because Action Outdoor Power will show you what you’re looking for!

Action Outdoor Power offers a myriad of Stihl products for, as Heather put it, “everybody who owns

any kind of yard to maintain!” They carry trimmers, mowers, hedge trimmers, edgers, blowers, chainsaws, sprayers, concrete cutters, and hand tools as well. Many of their gas-powered tools also come with a fully electric alternative for homeowners who enjoy working outdoors a little more quietly. If you have a project to complete, Action Outdoor Power has a tool specifically for you!

In addition to selling high-quality tools for every homeowner, the second side of the business, Rome Equipment Rental, caters to people who need a little more power but don’t feel like buying a Bobcat. Rome Equipment Rental gives you an affordable way to DIY your way to a brand-new backyard transformation, and that’s by offering dependable heavy equipment at a reasonable price. Rent Bobcats, skid steers, excavators, trenchers, and more, so you can get the job done: your way! They rent to small contractors and landscapers as well.

Whether you’re buying or renting, Rome Equipment Rental and Action Outdoor Power is ready to make your homeowner dreams come true! Even if you aren’t sure what you need to get the job done, they’ll take care of everything. “I’m going ask what [the customer] is doing because I want to make sure they have the right machine for the right job,” said Heather. “Trust us when we tell you which machine is going to work out better for you.”

Heather also highlighted the emphasis she and the rest of the team put on relationships: “They’re more than our customers: they’re our friends. I talk to them about how their mower is doing outside of work; I want to keep our community happy. I’m here 10-12 hours a day, and I’m here for my customers. I want to make sure they’re taken care of 100 percent. We can’t be here without our customers, and our customers make it easy to take care of them.”

Rome Equipment Rental and Action Outdoor Power is open 7:30a.m. to 5:30p.m. Monday thru Friday and 8:00a.m. to 12p.m. on Saturday. Their store is located at 90 E. Callahan Street in Rome. You can call ahead at (706) 291-0222, or visit their websites: actionrentallinc.stihldealer.net for more details about their outdoor power equipment and romerentalequipment.com for their rental information.

Love=Discipline

by Rev. Brenda Dedmon

It seems in our world today, there is so much debate about what the best way is to discipline children, when is too much or not enough, or not wanting to stifle a child’s independence. We read in Proverbs 22:6, “Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old, they will not turn from it.” This verse reminds us that children do need guidance, and this instruction will serve them their entire lives.

Let us examine what the word “discipline” means versus “punishment” for children. When you discipline a child, you are teaching them to learn to follow rules or correct misbehavior in a positive way. Punishment may stop a certain behavior in the moment, but it is not likely to change behavior for the long term.

When children are disciplined in positive ways, they are learning what expectations are and the accountability for natural and logical consequences that follow. Positive discipline leads to healthy self-esteem because it puts children in control of their behavior and teaches new skills such as self-control and self-regulation. The child will also learn that behavior is a form of communication, and it enables the child to learn how to behave differently in the future.

Discipline helps children learn that boundaries are part of the necessities in life. We can all look at some adults today and recognize by their behavior that they did not learn about self-control or self-regulation. In the formative years, they did not learn the concept that actions result in consequences and boundaries are needed to become a selfreliant adult. They often suffer from low self-esteem and the ability to make wise decisions.

The consequences of your positive discipline should meet the requirements of the Four Rs:

• Reasonable: Redirect your child to a more appropriate choice of behavior. Tell children what they can do instead of what they cannot do. You may say, “You may go outside and play or work a puzzle,”

instead of saying, “You cannot watch TV.” Offer acceptable choices instead of the behavior they chose. • Relates to the Problem: Make sure that you are dealing with the behavior that just occurred and not bringing up things in the past. Statements that begin with “You always…” or “You will never…” bring up past aggressions, not the current behavior.

• Results: Lead to natural consequences and serve as a guide for future logical actions if the behavior happens again. Do not offer consequences that you cannot keep. “You will not ever…” statements will be impossible to keep. • Reminders: Rather than always making demands of your child, which will exhaust you and your child, use gentle one-word reminders. Instead of, “Get your coat, stop running, share the toy,” say, “Coat, walk, share.” This will lessen the defensive mood and remind them of proper behavior.

The most important message in discipline is to communicate love and respect for your child. If a child feels loved, they will respond to your discipline in positive ways.
