As information swirled about, it became obvious we were all going to have to do the best we could in light of not fully understanding the invisible enemy that had stopped us in our tracks. Unfortunately, all our best efforts did not save everyone and many lost loved ones—or became seriously ill themselves— because of a virus that impacted the world on a biblical proportion. Now we find ourselves more than a year later trying to define a “new normal,” perhaps even a “better normal” than we had before. So, I ask you what have we learned and what should be our focus in the days ahead? May I suggest three things that need our attention and devotion going forward… First, let us come together and worship as commanded

Surprises! Surprises!

o you like surprises? I like surprises that are fun and make me happy! One day, my friends had a surprise birthday party for me and I was really
surprised—especially when some friends from out of town came! Have your parents ever planned a surprise trip for your family? Do you remember how excited you were when they told you? As the day got closer, did your mother begin to help you pack what you would need and talk about all the things you would do? I am sure you were getting excited! It is always fun to go and discover new places and do different things. There were some children we read about in the Bible who had a big surprise when their parents told them they were going to see Jesus. They had heard about this man named Jesus who had healed sick people, healed blind people, and helped crippled people to walk. This story is in the Bible in Mark 10:13-16. Read the following story as it might have happened: heard Jesus was there teaching. There were a group of parents who heard this news and they thought how fun it would be for Jesus to meet their children and give them a blessing. They hurried home and gathered their children and told them they were going to meet Jesus. The children were so happy they put on their best clothes to go. As they were walking down the dusty road, they were laughing and chanting— “we are going to see Jesus!” Some gathered flowers on the roadside and some picked up rocks to take to Him. They were a noisy group walking down the road because they were so excited. Jesus’ disciples heard the group before they could even see them. They gathered and determined that Jesus would not want to be bothered with the children. They decided to turn them away. As soon as they saw them, they told them they had to leave. The children were so disappointed. However, Jesus saw what was happening and said, “No, don’t stop them, let them come and see

me.” The children began to run to Jesus, and He took them on His lap and talked to them. They shared the flowers and rocks with Him. The disciples were surprised that Jesus would spend time with children. Jesus said to them, “Don’t ever get between them and me. These children are at the very center of life in the kingdom. Mark this: Unless you accept God’s kingdom in the simplicity of a child, you’ll never get in” (Mark 10:13-16). He then gathered the children around Him and prayed a blessing over them. As the parents were returning home, they were so happy that Jesus told their children He loved them and that they were an important part of His ministry. The children all agreed this was the best surprise ever! Gather with your family and discuss ways you know Jesus loves you. How do you think you can show Jesus you love Him? Some things may even surprise you! About The Author

predictions were so creatively vague that there is little agreement upon which event he may have been referring to. Because his little puzzles could be put together in any number of configurations, each of Nostradamus’s predictions seemed to come true over and over again. Whenever a new event occurred that matched one of his predictions, his puzzle was reworked. While this exposes Nostradamus as having no actual knowledge of the future, people still believe he was the real deal. If you are at all familiar with the QAnon movement in our world today, you may recognize it as mirroring Nostradamus’s puzzle party whereby an anonymous individual named ‘Q’ gained quite the following after having

The Peddler n County Lincolnshire, in the village of Spilsby, between the Lincolnshire Wolds and the Fenland, for centuries told there lived a peace-loving people. Spilsby has been and will always be a market town. Home to butchers, bakers, haberdashers, weavers and farmers, four main roads radiate from the town center where each year the townspeople host its annual market. Known for fine wares and excellent harvests, people travel there to partake of its offerings. Because the market carries significance, Spilsby’s peace-loving folk work in harmony year-round to make the event a success. It can be said of its people that love of neighbor is their highest aim, their chief export. In this certain year, the village was particularly proud of its harvest. Measured against town lore and history, most felt this was the best they had known in their lifetime. No one could remember a better one. Now the time had come for its annual market, so the village made preparations. On market eye, while the sun passed solar noon, a peddler ambled into town in search of the market’s chief magistrate. Finding him, a deal was struck to sell his wares at market. Market day arrived and Spilsby filled with people. All came with something in mind to buy. Some noticed an odd sort who had not been there before selling his goods. Noticing a peculiar tool, the first buyer approached the peddler. “Please sir, tell me about this tool.” “It is a unique tool, multi-purposed. Once used, you will think all things a means to an end, even your neighbor.” The buyer responded, “I do not wish to think this way. No, thank you.” Then, another approached and noticed a puzzle. “Please, sir, tell me about this puzzle.” “The puzzle is unsolvable. Give it to your friends as a trick and they will learn to give up. Once tried, futility will be their life perspective.” The buyer thought, “I do not think this fun.” And he moved on. Another came eyeing a measuring rod. In need of one, he asked, “Sir, tell me about your ruler. Besides its utility, it

has an enticing appearance. Its hue and patina are of interest to me.” “This measure has ancient origins. It is of a sort used by the Greeks. Once used, man’s measure will be how you measure all things.” Pausing in thought, he said, “I could never buy such an object. I’ll look elsewhere.”
Hours passed and the peddler showed nothing for his efforts. The sun leaned west. The crowd thinned. Then, a young girl approached. “Hello, young lady.” “Hello. Can you tell me about your tulips? They’re beautiful.” “My dear lass, tulips of this variety are a symbol of forgiveness. Smelling their fragrance, you will understand forgiveness is a mere accommodation.” With her eyes showing pause, she said, “Sir, forgiveness is an act of love. I will buy them.” With that, she turned and gave them to the peddler. The day ended. The peddler packed his wares and left Spilsby never to return.

Strength and Peace

he Lord will give strength to His people. The Lord will bless His people with peace. In this day and time, we all need a shelter of peace and
healing. God knows all about us and what we will be dealing with way before we do. He is quick to come to our rescue at any time. Each of us have felt alone or abandoned when it seemed like our world had been shattered by bad news. In these times, when darkness overshadows our circumstances and we cannot see the hope we so desperately need, God comes into the center of our pain and weakness and faithfully holds us up. He comes in the way that He knows we will respond to and receive. His resources are endless. Just pick up a Bible—it is in His Word to give us our daily bread and to help in every circumstance. God can and will use whatever method necessary to reach us. It may be a phone call, a letter or email from a friend, it may be a stranger on the street who speaks the life-giving words we need in that moment, or it may be that His Holy Spirit visits us and reveals His awesome presence of love and acceptance. The times God has revealed Himself to me when I was in a place of despair or fear are immeasurable.

When the Lord first put the event on Leslie’s heart, it was motivated by a heart to draw in the broken, specifically those lost in addiction. It was something that deeply impacted her life and the lives of those involved in the event. A team was put together of leaders that had either struggled with addiction or grew up with families that had. The Restore the Prodigal event morphed into something much larger and much more meaningful than a singular day of worship—it became a beacon of hope and a sign of faith that Jesus would restore all of our families and friends into life and light. The goal was simple: bring the prodigal back home. In the story of the Prodigal Son, found in Luke 15, the father welcomes back his lost son with open arms of acceptance and gratitude. The father did not forsake the son for his bad choices, but rather, he ran to meet him and celebrated his return. Like the father found in the story, Jesus waits for us to come into His loving arms of forgiveness. He does not turn us away because of our failures and flaws and he does not critique us for our mistakes and shortcomings. No matter what we are in when we come to Jesus, whenever we decide to give our lives to Him, the Lord runs to meets us and rejoices that another child has returned home. Together, with the help of incredible ministries that aid men and women coming out of addiction, like Dalton

Feed Those Who Are Hungry any of us who grew up in the South understand all too well that food is the way to one’s heart. Recipes are treasured more than gold, and anything that came from our mother’s kitchen is valued more than anything from a five-star restaurant. Now that I have moved to Washington, D.C., I have learned that many things are different, but some things, like gathering around with loved ones for a special meal, are exactly the same. My university’s Catholic group held a large Thanksgiving dinner where each of us brought a dish and came together to laugh and fill our plates high with food. Before our meal started, two individuals walked into the room unaware that our group had reserved the place for our dinner. Our Priest greeted them with a smile and asked if they were here to eat, and with anxious grins, both said, “We’re not religious, I’m sorry, we didn’t realize you all had the room reserved. We will go somewhere else.” With no hesitation, Father said, “That’s okay. Are you hungry?” The couple nodded their heads almost in disbelief that someone could be so accepting of those different than themselves. At that moment, nothing about them mattered except their need. They were hungry, so they ate. They ate with gratitude and enthusiasm, seated among those of us who welcomed them with open arms…because three turkeys were more than enough to feed us all. In this lifetime, we are all hungry at one point or another for something. Many times, that something is food or water, but other times, we hunger for something more. We hunger for love, acceptance, forgiveness, and empathy. Some hunger for merely the feeling of knowing that somebody cares about them. As Christians, we need to be the ones to step up and feed those who are hungry. The Bible is filled with simple verses about feeding those who are hungry and giving water to those who are thirsty, but oftentimes, I think we forget that this concept was the primary foundation of Jesus’ ministry. In a literal sense, Jesus provided fish and bread to those with little to eat, but He also fed the souls of everyone He met. Jesus provided medicine to those who hungered for healing and assurance to those who hungered for strength.
32 // September 2021
No matter the person and no matter their circumstance, Jesus fed them simply because they were God’s creation. We are all God’s creation. This is a fact that cannot be debated among churches, denominations, or congregations because it is a fact that was established on the first page of the Bible. If Jesus thought that each one of us was worth dying for, we must approach each and every person with that same love and respect. Prejudice has no place in Christianity. Judgement has no place in Christianity. Hate has no place in Christianity.
Jesus told us exactly what belongs in Christianity. He said that love has a place in Christianity, as well as kindness, generosity, prayer, humility, and forgiveness. You see, our tables are not large enough to fit every bowl of food, so we must choose wisely which ones we choose to fill up. Together, let us make the decision to fill up our bowls with compassion, understanding, patience, and all the good things that Jesus showed us. If we fill our bowls with this type of food—this much spiritual food—we can begin to feed all those who are hungry. “As evening approached, the disciples came to Him and said, ‘This is a remote place, and it’s already getting late. Send the crowds away, so they can go to the villages and buy themselves some food.’ Jesus replied, ‘They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat’” (Matthew 14:15-16). About The Author

Hope Among Darkness

by Faith Hanks
e live in an unreached country with intense spiritual darkness and immense lostness. We are missionaries with the International Mission
Board (IMB), in a country where the predominate religion is Buddhism mixed with Animism. Our Asian people group’s entire religion focuses on fear and merit. It is all about what they can do to earn favor with Buddha or their ancestors. Ultimately, they want this favor for a more comfortable life and afterlife. They are desperately searching for hope in a religion that possesses none. Some will go to the temple and bow down hundreds of times, hoping Buddha or some deity will listen to them. Every home has an ancestor altar. Habitually, they pray and offer sacrifices to their ancestors. If they were to halt this, they are convinced it would bring bad luck. For them, that bad luck could mean terrible accidents, loved ones dying, or maybe it could somehow affect their own fate in the afterlife. It is a massive part of the local culture to follow Buddhism and Animism. Even if they think their practices are hopeless, they are taught to not question their religion. Interestingly, they fear death and hell. Sadly, most have a right to fear because the average person in our country will live their entire lives without ever hearing the gospel. For many, the sole thing they know about Jesus is that

For most of us, God’s call is in less dramatic ways from some of the experiences we read about in the Bible. You might also sense direction through an issue that is frequently on your mind, or by taking stock of your giftedness, and seeing what brings you joy. relief comes as they are lying on the table during their very first session. How does Spinal Decompression help? Decompression Therapy gently stretches the spine, relieving pressure from the discs, joints, and muscular tissues, while enhancing the body’s natural healing process. The gentle distractive forces create decompression to improve blood flow and essential nutrient exchange while taking pressure off the pinched nerves. Once the pressure is off the nerves, the pain, numbness, and tingling go away. This helps provide lower back pain relief, sciatica pain relief, and neck pain relief. Spinal Decompression Therapy has a high success rate for pain associated with herniated or bulging discs, even after failed surgery. What are the treatments like?
