What’s This World Coming To?

s a product of the sixties (1960s), I heard the phrase,

I have doubts, but may I have faith that overcomes them. “What is this world coming to?” is a cry of despair, but I have hope in the Lord of all creation. In this sad and dark world, I want to be a reflection of my Savior’s joy and light. I have thought about and prayed the familiar prayer of Saint Francis. Saint Francis was born in the town of Assisi in Italy in 1182. At the age of 20, he devoted himself to a life of prayer. Three years later, Francis embraced a life of poverty and dedicated himself to God. He was the founder of the Franciscan religious order. This prayer is attributed to him. Prayer of St Francis: Lord, make me an instrument of your peace: where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy.
Everyone was wondering and asking, “What IS this world coming to?” A lot has changed in 50 years, while nothing much has changed at all. Turn on the TV, radio, Sirius, or cable, and the news is reporting much the same thing with different names and locations. No one could have fathomed a virus disabling and perhaps dismantling this world as COVID-19 has. I am ashamed of how politics has modeled for us to treat one another with disrespect. I am heartbroken that our generation did not fix the problems: only propagated them. As a police chaplain, I have served alongside hundreds of dedicated men and women in law enforcement who themselves are ashamed and embarrassed by the acts of a few bad officers. I work with and interact with people of color daily who live with some fear because of the color of their skin. I am a white man, and because of who I am and where I live,
O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console, to be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive, it is in pardoning that we are pardoned, and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen. It’s not about me! I do not need to be understood, consoled, loved, or cared for. I need to look at everyone I meet throughout every day and offer to them the understanding, love, care, and compassion they deserve and need. Lord! Please make me an instrument of your peace! For if we do not become the change we want for our world, we can imagine “what this world is coming to.”

sun was already hot enough to bake cookies. By the time I reached the boardwalk that led back to the air-conditioned condo, I was panting with exertion. I looked forward to a tall glass of icy water. As I crossed over the pond, squawking geese greeted me. I scowled at them as if they were to blame for fall’s absence. It was late September, after all. Determined to cling to my bad mood, I trudged on. But when the regal cattails lining the pond on the other side beckoned to me, I stopped. The cattails stood at ease in utter stillness. Instead of fretting about the heat, they appeared cool and calm. What I noticed next lifted my heart. A few of the cattails were covered with whitish-gray fuzz. When the summer life cycle of this plant is ending, new seeds are produced. Each is connected to a bit of white fluff so it can travel on the wind to another spot, where it will grow come spring: a sure sign of fall! My grumbling spirit changed to one of gratitude. I bowed my head to thank God for His powerful reminder. Although the temperatures were still summertime-hot, God’s plan was in place and would continue. Through the promise I found in the marsh, I remembered God’s love is steadfast. He walks with us through all seasons of life, no matter how long they last. “But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience” (Romans 8:25). To hope for in this verse means to expect and trust, while patience means cheerful endurance. How many
impatience for fall, I could have easily overlooked the fuzzy cattails, which, to me, signified God’s promise of eternal life. Today, God used His gift of creation to shift my focus from myself to His love for me as He whispered, “Not now, but soon.” The longing to bypass God’s timing is useless. “Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord!” (Psalm 27:14). What is God asking you to wait for during this season of life? What is the greatest challenge you face as you wait?

Rock Or Sand? here would you build a new house? We know that rocks are hard and sturdy and can make a foundation unbreakable. With sand, on the other hand, it can be very shifty and even makes it too hard for you to stand on because you start to sink. Matthew 7:24-27: “Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock. And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.” The Parable of the Wise and the Foolish Builders (also known as the House on the Rock) is a parable of Jesus appearing in the Gospel of Matthew (7:24-27) and Luke (6:46-49). The parable illustrates the importance of building one’s life on obedience to the teachings and example of Jesus. Our Holy Father made us this promise to His followers: “Here on Earth, you will have many trials and sorrows.” I can understand that, since the world is opposed to Jesus and all He stands for now. I too have always had a hard time understanding how I’m supposed to count trials and sorrows a joy, just as many of you feel the same way. But though the years, I’ve learned that we have to continue in faith and become mature and complete in Christ, just like the wise man and the foolish man. The foolish man had to find out the hard way that he must trust the Lord. Just think back to your hardest struggle and how you rebuilt from the fall or failure you went through. We all have those times. Matthew 6:27: “And who of you by worrying can add one hour to the length of his life?”

Jesus will take that fall or failure and use it to strengthen your faith. It’s simply a test that we all can overcome by His mighty mercy. John 3:30: “He must increase, but I must decrease.” 1 Peter 5:7 tells us, “Cast all your anxiety on Him because he cares for you.” Many times, I’ve acquired different tools to help me grow in my faith. I sometimes pray just a few short, simple words, such as, “Help me, Jesus,” and it will allow me to open a conversation with the Lord. Waiting for anxiety to simply vanish on its own has never worked for me. But prayers still work with God, and He’s always with us.
We need to stay in touch with Jesus. He hears prayers, and I can claim this verse. For I trust my cares to Him who cares for me. 1 John 4:18: “There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear.” Are you in an anxious or vulnerable place right now? Entrust your fears to Jesus today, knowing that He promises to fill you with His perfect peace and that you can count on Him to lead you to the Rock of salvation. 2 Peter 3:18: “But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.” About The Author

From Darkness To Light

o give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the
way of peace” (Luke 1:79). I lived with severe anxiety and depression
until I was 33. God instantly delivered me when I was born again in Batam, Indonesia. That was more than 20 years ago. I have experienced deep sadness and even heartbreak since then. The difference now is that I know that God is with me. No matter what happens around me, I have deep and settled joy in my heart that is not dependent upon circumstances or upon the actions or inactions of others. I completely trust God with my life. 2 Corinthians 4:6: “For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.” This joy is not conditional. This joy is a gift from God. He can make a way out of no way. He can move us from the kingdom of darkness into the kingdom of light. Today’s devotion is to share that no matter how dark it seems, there is new life and hope in Jesus Christ. 1 Peter 2:9: “But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light.” Isaiah 9:2: “The people that walked in darkness have

The support from the customers and community of Dalton and Whitfield County has been a blessing. We were so happy during our first month of operation with the support that we received. We have gained many new customers from as far away as Chattanooga, Atlanta, and Blue Ridge, Georgia. The recent pandemic crisis that affected food supplies at major stores caused people to seek meat elsewhere. We were fortunate, being a small business, that our suppliers didn’t have any issues getting products to us. We worked hard but were happy we could continue to provide needed food to our community. Our great customers helped spread the word that we were here. We would love for people to visit our store in Dalton. Wayne’s Meat Market is a butcher market with oldfashioned meat counters. Customers can order meat by pound, pieces, special cuts, or any way you want it. We grind our ground beef and ground chuck daily in house with top-quality meats. Am I An Antique? ee, I am doing a new thing!” (Isaiah 43:19). I love antiques. To me, old things have a certain charm about them, filled with history and interest. I personally own a few antiques, but I am really not very knowledgeable about them. I was told once that the criterion for an item’s being considered an antique is that it be 50 years old or older. If that is the case, then I qualify— and some of my belongings are also eligible. Yeah, I love old things. I love the old hymns that have stood the test of time. Many of them still send chills and thrills to my inner spirit when I hear them or sing them.
Although I love old things, I also get excited about new things! I love the newer, contemporary worship and praise music, and I love the thrill that I feel when I hear or sing them too. My car radio is usually attuned to the Message, although my husband occasionally turns it to enLighten, the Southern Gospel music station. He likes old things too! Although I am sometimes slow to accept newer fads, fashions, and trends, I still love the new—new ideas, new ways of doing things, new insights. Yes, I know every new thing a person tries doesn’t always work or endure the test of time. The newest ideas are not necessarily the best ideas, but the fact that people are thinking up new things proves that there are optimistic people who are not

satisfied with the status quo and think things could be better. LPs and 8-tracks may well be considered antiques now, but they were important steps in the chain of events that brought us DVDs! A news story in the recent past told of a church closing its doors for the purpose of getting rid of the aged membership, and later reopening with only the young as members. There are those who believe it’s time for the old to step back and let the young take over. There must be a place for all of us! While the young bring new energy, excitement, and fresh, innovative ways of doing things, the old bring stability, wisdom, and encouragement, and they preserve legacy. My husband, given half a chance, can strike up a conversation with anybody, anywhere! In a conversation once with a man in his 80s, he discovered what church the elderly gentleman attended and commented on the beauty of the new sanctuary just built. The man (I hesitate to call him “old” because of his wonderful mindset!) responded with excitement and pride and said, “You know, we had an uphill battle with some of the old people, but we persevered and finally got our new building!” You may feel safe living in the “comfort zone” of the past, but I don’t want to be like the person who said, “Wheels—who needs ’em?” or, “Computers—who needs ’em?” (or you fill in the blank!). I want to be an active advocate of the upgrade and update! I want to go broadband, embrace the iPad, and appreciate my GPS (even when it sometimes doesn’t choose the quickest route for me)! Life is too short and too important to live in the past. Bring on the changes! Just be patient with me until I can get in my Scooter and go with you! My body may move a little slower, but my mind and my spirit may very well be yelling for you to catch up!

Marriage Sabotage To An End ow many marriages have been destroyed simply because people have not properly resolved issues in their lives, commonly called baggage? What is baggage? How does it affect our marital relationships? If you stop and open your life’s bag and pilfer through it, what would you discover? How full is it? There’s a saying commonly referenced to when discussing marriage: “They’re bringing a lot of baggage into their new marriage.” You haven’t heard this before, have you? Why is this so common? Is it not the fact that issues that caused the previous relationship to fail were not recognized or accepted and resolved? How many people today enter into another relationship shortly after the dissolving of the previous one without resolving the causes of their failure? This common baggage problem does not just involve marriages. It also includes our social relationships. Any unresolved issues in our lives will affect the success of our marriage. They will sooner or later surface and sabotage the present relationship we are developing. Whose desire is it to destroy all relationships? Doesn’t he make it so easy and convenient to open our life’s bag of stuff and dig something out of it and sabotage our relationship with the possibility of permanent injury? Why do we find it so difficult to resolve so many issues from our past? Why do we make it so easy for Satan to use those issues against us, thus continuing our relationship failure cycle? This cycle will continue the rest of our lives if we fail to resolve baggage issues. Baggage, baggage, baggage. It’s no wonder the Bible says it’s so important that we need to lay aside every weight and sin that so easily besets us. Please notice that the Bible does not say that everything we carry with us in life is sin: absolutely the contrary. It becomes needless pain and suffering that we bear in our lives. How many times have you reached into your baggage and retrieved something and sabotaged your relationship? Are we not supposed to take our burdens and unresolved issues to the Lord in prayer and leave them in His care?

Those issues are still unresolved if we pick them up to carry them with us as we leave the altar. Doesn’t that baggage get quite heavy to lug around all the time? If we continue doing the same things all the time, can we not expect the same old results? We need to seek the Lord and allow Him to help us in our unresolved issues. We need to open our hearts to receive God’s healing and lay aside all our unresolved issues which
will eventually sabotage our marriage. Seek the Lord and adopt His changes, and in time, your marital relationship will change for the better. Be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. Peace will return to your marriage. You don’t have to continue to carry your relationship baggage any further. Stop! Resolve it! Forgiveness matters! God intended for our lives to be simple and easy, not burdensome, filled with pain and suffering. Isn’t His yoke easy and His burden light to carry? Don’t allow Satan to trick you into reaching into your bag of stuff for something to sabotage your marriage. Isn’t it worth fighting for to have a healthy marriage? Blessings and peace be unto you as you begin to evaluate all the relationships in your life.

You probably do everything you can think of to help them, but absolutely nothing works. It could be in the store checkout line, at bedtime, the second you walk in your friend’s house or at a birthday party. You may find yourself at wits’ end and literally on the verge of having your own meltdown. There probably isn’t a parent on the planet who can’t relate to this experience. Your blood pressure goes up and you can feel everyone watching you. So, you reach into the recesses of all you know about good parenting in an attempt
to use something you’ve learned, but absolutely nothing will console your child. What now? Before you judge yourself too harshly, know that you are not alone. There is nothing worse, no matter how old you are, than feeling out of control. Children have meltdowns. But guess what? Sometimes adults do too. Christie Burnett, editor of Childhood 101, encourages parents to consider developing a “Calm Down Plan” to help children cope when their emotions overwhelm them. These steps can help them when they are upset or feel out of control.
5 Steps to Managing Big Emotions
● Remember that it is never OK to hurt others. Set clear guidelines about what is acceptable and what

is not. For example, physically hurting others or destroying things is not acceptable, nor is it OK to say hurtful things. ● Take three deep breaths or count slowly to 10. Breathing deeply or slowly counting to 10 gives your child time to recognize their body’s warning signs, such as a tense body, clenched teeth or a racing heart. Talk with your child about how their body feels when they are angry or frustrated. Then introduce the idea of taking a few breaths to compose themselves and choose a better course of action than striking out at another person. ● Use words to express feelings and hopes. Acknowledging their feelings gives them legitimacy. Saying what they wish would take place helps to open a problem-solving conversation. Sometimes what they wish would happen is not acceptable, but this is part of the learning process. It’s also a great opportunity to help them think of other options. ● Ask for help to solve the problem. Talking through a problem helps to process the situation, even for adults. Let your child know it is OK to ask for help solving a problem, and keep channels of communication open so they feel they can always come to you for help. One day, they’ll be working on much bigger problems than a spat with a sibling or frustration with a friend. ● Take the time needed to calm down. Teach your child that sometimes the proposed solution may not seem to be enough. They may still feel angry or upset after working through each of the steps. In these situations, it is often better to walk away or find another safe way to diffuse those feelings. Whether you’re younger or older, it’s difficult when you feel out of control. These steps can provide a sense of security and help you develop a plan of attack for those moments when big emotions try to take over. About The Author

Spiritual Entrepreneur: 100 Days of Encouragement word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in a setting of silver” (Proverbs 25:11). The world needs more entrepreneurs, more good ideas, and more courageous people who see a need and will do something about it. The world especially needs more Christian “spiritual” entrepreneurs who recognize the opportunities God is revealing to them and are then courageous enough to act on it. On August 14, 2019, I read in Richard Foster’s book “Celebration of Discipline,” “The fruit of solitude is increased sensitivity and compassion for others.” Over the next several days, I reflected on this thought and prayed, “What can I do to make the world a better place and have more compassion for others?” God brought to my mind the image of an older gentleman I would see often at coffee shops around town. It appeared to me that this man was always meeting with collegeaged students. I saw him so often, I started asking others if they knew who he was. It turns out he is a retired minister who meets with young adults to mentor them. Wow—someone willing to give up their time and energy for the betterment of others to speak encouragement into their lives! Six days later, God’s prompting came: “I want you to write letters of encouragement—for 100 days.” Yikes! What would people think? I feared people’s thinking I was a weirdo or that I wanted something from them. I also thought, why should I write these letters? I need encouragement. I’m going through a tough spot in life; I’m out of work! Nevertheless, I submitted and started writing to family, friends, acquaintances, strangers, celebrities, heroes, cultural villains, and the older gentleman from the coffee shops. Each day, I would pray, “God, who needs encouragement today? Who do you want me to write to?” Each day, He would bring someone to mind for me to write to, sometimes people I absolutely did not want to write to.

But what I discovered as I wrote these letters was that I was being encouraged. I was focusing less on myself and my own problems and more on others and how I could speak into their lives. Gratitude was changing my attitude. Over the 100 days, I received responses like, “I really needed to hear those words because I was in a very dark place.” I had people approach me in tears, saying, “I’ve
never received anything like that before, and you don’t know how perfect the timing of this was.” Others said, “You believe in me more than I believe in myself.” Maybe there’s someone you know who needs to know that you admire them, look up to them, believe in them. During this time of quarantine, maybe now is the time to write and tell them? We all need encouragement. “I shall pass this way but once; any good, therefore, that I can do or any kindness that I can show to any human being let me do it now. Let me not defer nor neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again.” –Etienne de Grellet (Quaker missionary)

True Love hen you hear those two words, “true love,” you automatically picture two people in love, walking hand in hand at 80 years old after years of marriage. But sometimes true love is so much more than that. This is the story of what true love is to me. I believe God places us on this earth for a reason. Each of us has a job to do, and as long as we do the job our Heavenly Father set before us, He is pleased. I also believe the meaning of true love does not always come in the form of a man and a woman in love. I believe it can be something God has laid out
for us, and without true love in your heart, you may never really know what the love of God is all about. This is the story of a young girl who has given her whole life to care for others instead of herself. Her name is Tabitha, and she is my niece. You see, 17 years ago, my precious baby daughter had to have a heart transplant, and in the midst of all that, she sustained a severe brain injury. Tabitha was just 14 years old at the time. However, she forgot about doing normal teenage things and literally moved in with me (with my sister’s permission) to help us with our daughter. She became a sister to her instead of a cousin. She helped with her baths, her feedings through a feeding tube, and her many, many medicines that were

given multiple times a day. She fought to get her back to us both physically and mentally. She was my angel. Many years passed, and she went on to marry and have children of her own. She was only married for two years and had two children when her big sister was tragically killed in a car accident. True love. Both she and her husband took on all three of her sister’s babies. She now had five kids under 3 years old. Her husband did not have to do this, and neither did she. Just two months after that, her husband’s sister died suddenly, leaving behind her 13-year-old and her 15-year-old. Again, true love. They took them in. In a matter of two years’ time, they went from a newly married couple to a young couple with seven kids. Soon, she had another baby of her own. She now had eight kids. This, to me, my friends, is what true love really is. This is God’s work! We think we know what true love is, but until you have witnessed someone give up their plans, their career, and their family to help a child in need, well, my friends, this is true love! John 15:13 says, “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” I believe this to be not only about a person dying for someone but about giving up things for others. To me, that is true love, a love that God gives us deep in our souls. You see, during all this time, while this beautiful soul was taking care of all these children, her father was dying, and her mother became very ill. She cared for her father until he went home with Jesus and to this day cares for her mom and the six children she has left at home. True love is definitely not always about a man and a woman in love. True love is about the love God puts in our hearts that we are to give away to others throughout our lifetimes. Don’t keep that love in your heart locked away. Always remember to love one another, and always look around and see what your true love is. About The Author

ebster defines harvest as “the time of year when matured grain, fruit, vegetables, etc. are reaped and gathered in.” My parents always had a
garden, and harvest time meant getting to eat an abundance of zucchini, tomatoes, corn, and whatever else happened to be planted that year. It also was a time of canning, freezing, and preserving the fruits and vegetables so that they could be eaten during the cold winter months while the garden lay dormant. Yet, harvest can be applied to other things. Galatians 6:9
applies it to good works: “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up” (NIV). 1 Corinthians 9:6 applies it to finances: “He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully” (NKJV). Jesus applied it to the spiritual salvation of the world: “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into His harvest field” (Mt. 9:37-38 NIV). As autumn harvest comes to a close and gardens are tilled under for the winter, harvesting can still continue. What will you harvest today?
Ingredients
• ½ c. oil • 1½ c. honey • 3 eggs • 1 tsp. pure vanilla extract • ½ tsp. orange flavor, or 2 tsp. grated orange peel • 2 c. peeled and grated zucchini • 3 c. freshly ground soft white wheat flour, or 2-2/3 c. all-purpose flour • ½ c. unsweetened cocoa powder • 1 Tbsp. baking powder • ½ tsp. baking soda • 1 tsp. salt • 1 tsp. cinnamon • ¼ c. milk • 1 c. chopped nuts (optional)

Instructions
1. Preheat oven to 325°F. Grease and flour a bundt pan. 2. In a large bowl, mix together the oil and honey with an electric mixer. Add eggs, beating after each addition. Add vanilla, orange flavor, and zucchini. 3. In a small bowl, combine the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and cinnamon. 4. Add the flour mixture to the honey mixture, alternating with the milk. Mix on low until thoroughly combined. Add nuts, if desired. 5. Bake for 55-60 minutes. Let it cool for 15 minutes before removing it from the pan. 6. After inverting it on a plate, drizzle the chocolate glaze over the top.
Chocolate Glaze
• 2/3 c. honey • 3 Tbsp. unsweetened cocoa powder • 1/3 c. milk • 2 Tbsp. unsalted butter • 1 tsp. pure vanilla extract • 5 drops (1/16 tsp.) orange flavor
In a small saucepan, combine honey, cocoa powder, and milk. Cook over medium heat and boil until it reaches 230°F (using a candy thermometer). Remove from heat. Add the butter, vanilla, and orange flavor. If it becomes too thick as it cools, add a little milk to thin it.

Partners in Crime: Non-Romantic ow could you conspire to test the Spirit of the Lord? Listen! The feet of the men who buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out also” (Acts 5:9). Have you ever been asked by your spouse or asked your spouse, “If I ever commit a crime, would you ‘have my back?” Translation—“Will you snitch on me or help me cover the crime?” Ananias and Sapphira must have asked one another this before committing the crime of withholding
money from the Holy Spirit after selling a piece of their property (see above Bible verse). In a way, they remind me of Bonny and Clyde. They may have loved each other even through a crime of selfish gain. But what happens when one combines this kind of “love” with crime? Consequences for committing a crime may end in picking up trash along highways, being locked behind bars, and others, or even worse, death. Couples do not have to commit a crime physically to be charged but mentally, they can cause their very own life. Although we are to support our spouses by submitting to one another, this does not mean committing a crime with them even if we have knowledge that our spouse committed a crime— “With his wife’s full knowledge he kept back part of the money for himself, but bought the rest and put the rest at

the apostles’ feet” (Acts 5:2). Take note that Sapphira did not withhold money for herself, but that what caused her death was the knowledge of her husband’s crime in which she lied about in Acts 5:8-9. Speaking of lying, “You have not lied just to human beings, but to God” (Acts 5:4). Ouch! There should be a sign with a friendly reminder in our minds that say, “Caution: If God has called someone out to do a mission, know they are protected by the Holy Spirit. God will not allow them to be fooled.” How embarrassing to be seen as the married coupled that lies. But even more embarrassing and ashamed and flirting with death when lying to the Almighty! God knows everything! He knows our thoughts and actions before we commit them… separately or together with someone. Let us not allow Satan to fill our hearts with greed just as he did Annanias heart that it causes us to lie to the Holy Spirit. We are to guard our hearts and if we can, do our best to try to protect our spouse’s heart by encouraging them to do what is right. This could be a possible alleviation of terrible consequences when crimes are committed. We should hold one another accountable for our actions. Consider this: “Two are better than one…If either one of them falls down one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up” (Ecclesiastes 4:9-10). Annanias and Sapphira could not help one another up, because they both had fallen. The conclusion and lesson in Annanias and Saphirra’s story: they both lied to the Holy Spirit in one way or another.
