Same Old Tricks e often think the temptations we face are unique. However, the Bible reveals that the temptations we face are essentially the same as in the Garden of Eden. John the Apostle informs us that the temptations we face come through three basic channels, the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life (1 John 2:16). The lust of the flesh includes those things that produce pleasant or exhilarating feelings. The lust of the eyes refers to those things that are attractive and upon seeing them

we are filled with desire. The pride of life includes objects and situations that will make us feel important and envied by others. This is the desire to be exalted. These things are not always evil but are evil when they are used to lure us away from God’s will. Satan tempts us to meet legitimate needs through means that cause us to disobey God instead of trusting him. If we consider any temptation we encounter, we can identify that temptation with one or more of these three channels.

6 // September 2018

These three channels of temptation are seen in Satan’s temptation of Eve in the Garden of Eden. When he tempted her to eat the forbidden fruit she saw that the fruit was good for food, pleasant to the eyes, and desired to make one wise (Gen. 3:6). This corresponds with the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes and the pride of life. She thought of how good this fruit would taste, how beautiful it was, and how wonderful life would be when she had the knowledge of good and evil. She believed Satan’s lie, disobeyed God, and plunged all creation into sin. Had she obeyed God, she would have learned the difference between good and evil by choosing the good and rejecting the evil. The very thing Satan accused God of withholding from Eve, God would have given her through obedience to him. Jesus’s temptation by Satan was different from Eve’s temptation in the Garden of Eden. Jesus was tempted in the desert instead of a garden. He had fasted for forty days instead of being surrounded by beautiful fruit from which he could have eaten as much as he desired with only one prohibition. However, Jesus was tempted in the same manner (Matt. 4:1-11). The lust of the flesh is seen in the temptation to turn the stones into bread. An appeal to pride was used when Satan tempted him to demonstrate his power by jumping from the temple’s pinnacle. The lust of the eyes was used when Satan showed and offered Jesus the kingdoms of this world if he would worship him. Jesus stood firm on the Word of God quoting Deuteronomy 6:16; 8:3; and 10:20 to resist Satan’s offers. Jesus had hidden God’s word in his heart that he might not sin against the Father (Ps. 119:11) and left the perfect example for us to follow.

oshua 1:6-9 says, “Be strong and of good courage, for to this people you shall divide as an inheritance the land which I swore to their fathers to give them. Only be strong and very courageous, that you may observe to do according to all the law which Moses My servant commanded you; do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may prosper wherever you go. This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” What does being brave mean to you? How can you use bravery for the kingdom? According to Webster dictionary, brave means having or showing mental or moral strength to face danger, fear, or difficulty, having or showing courage. To me, being brave means conquering a difficult situation without being defeated. Maybe your parents are divorced or getting divorced. You feel like it’s your fault and you blame yourself. It is never your fault. Being brave during this hard time is very important. Hold you head up high and do not allow the enemy to tell you it’s your fault. How can you turn this hard time into bravery for the kingdom? You can pray and ask God to help you handle the feeling of it being your fault. Instead of being sad all the time about your mommy and daddy, ask Jesus to comfort you and make you happy because both of your parents love you no matter if they are together or not. This is very hard for someone to go through at a young

8 // September 2018

age. I understand; I went through it. I did not know my biological father that well. The only time I saw him was when I went to visit him every other weekend because I had too. Was it fun? No! I knew that I had to talk to my mom about not going anymore. I was old enough to say no, and that I didn’t want to go. I stopped going to his house and throughout the years I didn’t talk to him. I received a text message on my seventeenth birthday that said I was making the worst decision by not allowing him to be in my life. I knew at that point that I had to be brave and tell him that I did not want him to contact me anymore. By this time my mom was married to a man who I now call my dad. It’s okay to say no to people that disrespect you. You deserve someone that will take you in and love you like our Heavenly Father loves you. My parents will be married nineteen years this coming February. I thought I would never have an earthly father, but God sent my daddy into my life. He has filled a void that I thought would never be whole again. To say the least, I am a daddy’s girl and always will be.You can have a relationship like this with your Heavenly Father because He loves you unconditionally. Be brave. You can do it.

When Jesus is not at the center, we become spiritually bankrupt. The problem is not our wallet. It’s a heart condition. Your heart is a treasure chest. What you keep inside it is what spills out when you open your mouth. Gò0dNews for Parents

Positive in the Negative t seems that our children are exposed to negativity in their lives at younger ages than ever before. With the use of social media and 24 hour newsfeeds, people tend to express their negative thoughts more than positive thoughts. It has become an acceptable behavior with no one being accountable for what is being said or the negative results it has on our society. How do we help our children at an early age recognize the importance of being a positive influence in the world in which they live? There are key

elements that parents should implement in teaching their children. The following are ways to help end the constant cycle of negativity. Teach Children to be Respectful One of the most important ways to instill respect is to model it for you child. Do they see you showing respect by listening to and considering other people’s interest and perspectives which may be different than yours? Do they you hear complain about people who may have a different skin tone or religious belief? Your words and actions are what children learn from the most. It is important to remember that as you show respect they are learning from you how to practice the same behavior. Teach Children to be Empathic Children need to understand that their feelings are valid and how to express those feelings in acceptable

20 // September 2018

behaviors. Parents need to help children think through and take responsibility. As you teach specific thinking and problem skills you are helping them to understand and care about other people’s feelings. This is a foundational skill to help them develop empathy. In what ways do they see you expressing empathy for others? Develop Clear Expectations and Consistent Consequences It is important for parents to communicate clear expectations which will decrease anxiety in children because there are few uncertainties. Children will need reminders but this should be done with gentle guidance. It is important to remember that you should not give a threatening consequence or give a direction that you are not willing to follow through on. You lose your credibility of being a positive parent and children will lose their clear expectations which in turn leads to negativity in your relationship. Recognize the Need for Developmentally Appropriate Behaviors Parents need to remember that children are people too, but they are a developing person and may have a limited capability of understanding depending on their age. Two year olds are not capable of taking another person’s perspective, which is why they have a hard time sharing. A four year old can be guided to understand another’s perspective but may still need guidance to learn how to respond appropriately. Positive guidance in early childhood helps them to develop a positive self-image which will lead them to have a positive outlook on life. In the Bible, we are reminded the importance of positive parenting. “Point your children in the right direction— when they’re old they won’t be lost (Proverbs 22:6, The Message). So which direction are your pointing your children?

Treading Deep Waters saiah 43:2 states “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.”

Over the past year or more I have been treading deep waters, in the sense of drowning in life’s many obstacles. If I told you the details you probably wouldn’t even believe me! I found myself face down on my cold hardwood floor crying out to God for forgiveness, grace, and mercy. There were so many things that I could never fix and I had to completely give it to the Lord and trust him for a miracle. For years I had been dealing with a personal temptation and never truly found deliverance until that night, the night Jesus took it all

22 // September 2018

away. After about an hour of pouring my heart out to God, I came up from that floor with a completely new mindset, new eyes, new thinking, and a new heart. I just had to trust him for that miracle, and a few days later he answered my prayers and performed what I thought to be impossible. Sometimes we think we are hiding our deepest and darkest secrets from people, from God, but we aren’t; he knows all of them. Around that same time period God gave me Isaiah 43:2 to stand on. It seems that every time I am facing what I think is impossible or simply having a hard time, he always lays a scripture on my heart for that time and season in my life. I keep it fresh on my mind and heart by repeating it daily to myself to remind me that he’s always there to rescue me. Many times in life we try to completely control our circumstances and situations all while believing we can fix it. Our current world is a “mind over matter,” “quick fix,” “self-help,” kind of society. So where does that leave any room for our miraculous God to work the impossible in our lives. Giving it all to God in faith means giving up our complete control and letting someone else have the power over our lives, and that’s not always easy. Hebrews 11 states, “Faith is the substance of things hoped for, and the evidence of things not yet seen.” I’ve certainly hoped for many things in my life, some being my personal dreams and others are promises God has given me. Some of these have already happened and I’m still waiting on others. When God gives you a promise and a calling, he will deliver on that, but it’s up to us to seek him, walk with him daily, and have that childlike faith. The next time you’re treading life’s raging waters, remember he will be with you; just have faith!

Healthy Food Weight Gain hen trying to diet and eat well, the information can all get pretty confusing. If you’ve ever been frustrated because you’re not losing weight eating so-called “healthy foods”, you’re not alone. The labels mention being low in fat or sugar, but unfortunately, that can be misleading and lead us astray, when the overall calorie content is still high! We may end up eating better, but we still aren’t losing any weight! We end up confused as to why we aren’t getting any leaner, but it’s because weight loss will always be about the number of calories we get from our food, not whether the item came from the healthy food section of the store. A lot of individuals start diet modifications by choosing healthier substitutes. This can be a great way to ease yourself into better eating habits, however, it can also be the main reason you get stuck in your fat loss. For example, switching from Coke to orange juice is an amazingly more healthy choice. Coke is little more than sugar water, whereas OJ contains antioxidant protection in the form of essential micronutrients like polyphenols and vitamin C. Yet, from a weight loss perspective, a 12oz can of Coke is 150 calories, and 12oz of Minute Maid orange juice is 153 calories. Sure, there are more nutrients in the orange juice, but in terms of excess energy storage, your body still must process an additional 150 calories. An even better alternative would be consuming the fruit itself. One medium navel orange has only 45 calories, plus all the valuable nutrients and the fiber that help you feel fuller than drinking the juice alone. Others make the healthy choice of snacking on almonds or other nuts and dried fruit, like raisins, instead of unhealthier snack foods like potato chips, corn chips, or cookies. But again, three Oreo or Chips Ahoy cookies contain about the same amount of calories as just a ¼ cup of almonds. If the almonds are more satiating, so that you eat less for dinner later, than they are not only a healthier choice, but can assist your weight maintenance as well. But if you simply use

24 // September 2018

it as a healthier snack, and eat the same amount for dinner later, your weight won’t budge. It’s always best to choose foods that come straight from nature and have as little processing or pasteurizing as possible. Fruits and vegetables are loaded with the proper ratios of macro- and micronutrients that our bodies need to function well. If you fill up most of your diet with these types of foods, it becomes easy to live a healthy lifestyle and

you don’t have to feel like you’re eating a restrictive fad diet. However, calories still count, even if they come from super healthy foods like bananas, yogurt, almond or peanut butter, granola from all natural ingredients, dried fruit, trail mix, whole grain breads or pasta, or other healthy items. If you feel you are eating very healthy, but are still having problems with your weight, recognize that you may have to cut back on some of your portions or calories, or significantly up your activity levels to compensate. aith is very important when it comes to our walk with Christ. It's so important that the Bible says, in Hebrews 11:6 that without faith it is impossible to please God. So what is faith? Hebrews 11:1 says that faith is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of the things not seen. The fact that we serve a God that we've never seen means that we have faith. I have had the chance to serve in youth ministry for quite some time now and I find that very often young

people tend to put their faith in other things or people besides Jesus. Perhaps it's their favorite actor, singer, sports star, or maybe even something, like a material thing. That seems to be the world's job today to get young people sucked into something, to take their minds off the most important thing, which is their relationship with Christ. There is no doubt that being a teenager in today's world can be so hard. I've talked to so many young people who tell me how difficult it is to be a Christian sometimes. Maybe it's because their friends don't believe the same way they do, or maybe something happens in their lives that they

simply can't understand, the loss of a loved one or a friend or maybe their parents getting divorced. They will ask themselves the question that we've all asked at one point or another in our lives: why? Why did God let this happen? Why would God allow this person to pass away? My friends and I have been there so many times in my life. My parents divorced when I was 8 years old. I had a very close friend who passed away in a car accident who loved the Lord so much and so many other things that I can't even fit in this article. Nowhere in the Bible did it say it would always be easy. I mean look at Job. He was a man who loved the Lord and then one day he loses everything. His family, all of his possessions, gone in the blink of an eye. It got so bad for Job that his wife told him he should just curse God and die but Job never lost his faith in God and in the end got so much more back. I like to tell people that faith is like a muscle. You go work out your physical muscles in the gym to stay strong and in shape because if you don't you become weak. That faith muscle has to be worked out, too. That comes when we go through things like tests or trials. It works out our faith in Christ to keep it strong. My main goal with this article is to encourage you today if you're going through something. I know the new school year is in full swing and maybe you're already facing challenges that are testing you. Please don't lose the faith. Remember that Jesus sticks closer than a brother and he will never leave your or forsake you. You may not understand why right now, and you might not ever, but remember what Jesus said that faith the size of a mustard seed can move a mountain. Just so you know the mustard seed is the smallest seed on planet earth. That's all you need! God bless you as you continue on this awesome journey in your relationship with God! Keep the faith!

We Need the Puritans (Part 1)

ention the Puritans to most modern folks and you’ll get responses like “They were repressive prudes who hated fun” and “They were intolerant legalists who burned witches.” Or (as H.L. Mencken joked) they lived with the haunting fear that someone, somewhere, was happy. While a few outliers on the fringes gave rise to caricatures like these, they’re not true of the mainstream. Puritanism was a theological movement seeking biblical reforms within the Church of England from 1500-1700. It

When contrasted with today’s evangelical landscape, they were spiritual giants. They were towering “oaks of righteousness” (Isa 61.3); we’re more like tumbleweed. They were sinful, for sure, with significant missteps (Oliver Cromwell comes to mind here), but they knew the grace of the gospel, and clung to it, preached it, and lived it with clarity and fervor like few have before or after. We can learn several lessons from their lives and writings which will serve our souls well. 1. Be taught to read the Bible from masters of the Bible. To read Puritan writings is to enter the world of Scripture. It was said of John Bunyan (author of Pilgrim’s Progress) that if pricked, he’d bleed Scripture. Their books were generally first sermons to ordinary people, and they see God’s truth everywhere. On those pages you encounter both the explanation and the “sense” (the meaning, implications, and applications) of Scripture. They asked of every verse, “What does this teach me of God: his ways, character, promises? How does this show me Christ’s beauty, and lead me to worship? Where does my life need to change in light of it?”

30 // September 2018

Next month, we’ll consider more of why we need the Puritans today. About The Author

branched out into Presbyterian, Congregational, and Baptist expressions within and beyond England, but all sprang from a single biblical center: a Scripturally-robust vision of God amazed by his majesty, in awe of Jesus’s mercy, and seeking to walk practically in communion with the Holy Spirit. Puritanism’s devotion to convictional, confessional truth culminated in the “Great Ejection” of 1662, when 2,000 of their pastors lost their jobs and homes for quietly refusing to compromise Scriptural truth and practice. Many suffered intense persecution, even starving to death, rather than negotiating with sin and unfaithfulness.

They’re incredibly practical in application, with deep insight into Scripture’s teaching on the workings, pains, and desires of the soul. They were convinced that the Bible’s goal was “doctrine for life,” with the conviction that (as William Ames said) true theology is “the teaching of living unto God.” In other words, these masters of the Bible had been mastered by the Bible, and lovingly sought to bring its teaching to bear on all of life. Our tendency today is to despise church history, theology, and hard study, claiming that God will whisper truth to listening ears; but, as Spurgeon observed, “It’s strange that many who make much of what God supposedly says to them, think so little of what he has shown to others.” We need the Puritans to help us learn to read and live Scripture rightly, strengthening discipleship.

he beauty of a single life is an inward journey with Christ. The faith of a Christian single will meet the challenges when confronted. A tree’s survival is in the ability to grow deep tap roots to be nourished by the hidden water below. It is also true for people of faith to accept the responsibility to grow deeper spiritually. Singleness can provide that opportunity to grow deeper in Christ. Paul, who probably was single, wrote to Ephesus that “Christ may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God” (ESV, Ephesians 3: 16-19). The very hope of a Christian life is in that singular relationship between you and Jesus Christ. The world that we live in seeks to define us by its own definition rather than that of God who made us. Social media, community, and even friends look at us outwardly in comparison to a standard set by humans. It can be discouraging, questionable, or even destructive. Created in the very imagine of God, you are the most beautiful of all the creation. Enjoying the sunset at the beach, the awe-inspiring beauty of the mountains, or

36 // September 2018

the simple beauty of a wild flower does not surpass how wonderful you are in God’s eyes. The Bible reveals many single believers who were able to move past the prejudice of their culture. They were able to bring a real hope of God’s purpose to the world. The history of the church is filled with notable influences of single men and women whose testimonies encourage us in our own struggles. We are witness today as we see singles that are a vital and crucial part of the kingdom of God. The heart of the matter is the heart. We seek a lot of directions today from our GPS, our computer search engine, and our cell phones. These can be good directions, but not necessarily the best. Finding first that peace of the inner being can transfer us to another path of hope, joy, and love. God’s plan is that you find the desire of your heart. It does not begin with another, but with you. It begins when you are able to know that this is who you are and this is who God made. As with all people, there will be struggles, sufferings and loneliness; it is not what defines you. God wants you to be filled with His completeness. God’s purpose begins in prayer and Bible study, but also seeking out others who have been on this journey. Find a mature Christian who will spend some time with you to engage in spiritual conversation. This is not a selfpsychological analysis, but for keeping our spiritual person connected to the spirit of God. Strengthening the inner self is more important than strengthening our physical body. Our spirit is eternal and moves us to that place where we feel accepted by God, our self, and then others.

t is so important to forgive others and yourself; life is too short. We need to forgive other as we have been forgiven by the blood of Christ Jesus. If we want to be free and stop struggling daily,

we must have enough faith in God that we are always able to forgive one another. If you have the faith of a mustard seed, you can say unto the sycamore tree, be thy removed and it shall be done (Mark 11:23). If you want forgiveness you must forgive. God said if we don't forgive neither can we be forgiven (Matthew 6:15). Who is in bondage if you don't forgive? You. How many times should you forgive your brother? Seven time seven times. Countless times and limitless times we are to forgive our brother (Matthew 18:22). To forgive means to make a conscious and deliberate decision to release feelings of resentment or vengeance toward a person or group who has wronged or harm you.

38 // September 2018

The pain of living with unforgiveness can poison your soul and destroy you. When we forgive others, we are able to release them to God and let it go! Also, we release ourselves to grow and to be free as oppose to being in bondage (Colossians 3:13). Thanks to God’s repentance and forgiving power, you gain all of these: God's glory, grace, mercy, strength, might, knowledge, forgiveness, blessings, riches, love, greatness, handiwork, holiness, righteousness, availability, patience, peace, joy, graciousness, gentleness, kindness, faithfulness, goodness, love, humble, willingness, beauty, and authority! Please, don't miss out on all of God's power and blessings listed above. Just forgive and move on!

ack away from the fence!” I was shaken and embarrassed when I heard those loud words from a Secret Service guard at the George Herbert Walker Bush compound in Kennebunkport, Maine. I previously had flown up to Boston, Massachusetts, from Columbia, South Carolina, the summer of 1991 to see my best friend from college and his family. Joe and Linda Grayton (along with their baby Daniel) eventually drove me up to Kennebunkport to see our former Presidents’ summer home from a

distance. After I got out of their car I walked ahead of the Graytons’ oblivious to a sign which stated: “NO WALKING BEYOND THIS POINT.” I kept walking. I wanted to get closer even though I did not have access. My walking stopped when I was told to back away. When Joe and Linda (with Daniel in tow) caught up with me, they laughed! Why do we desire to get close to the famous? Why are we impressed with them such that we freak out when we get close? Years before that humiliating encounter in Maine, I remember another experience with someone famous I also stumbled upon. In 1987, I accepted a job as a Dorm Counselor and Teacher at

40 // September 2018

a boarding high school in Asheville, North Carolina. During the school year I drove 3 or 4 teenage girls and boys to the church they wanted to attend on most Sunday mornings. One Sunday, I was late in picking them up. When we finally arrived at Montreat Presbyterian Church in Montreat, N.C. we knew we would have to walk in front of people to find a seat. One of the girls with us was embarrassed. I slowly opened the door to the sanctuary and looked for a vacant pew. I pointed and told our crew: “There are some seats over there.” That same embarrassed girl then said to me: “But look who is sitting on the row behind that empty pew!” I looked and froze. There sat Billy and Ruth Graham. We put on courage and quickly and quietly sat down in front of them. I noticed Ruth’s warm smile and I felt at ease. I later learned that Dr. Graham worshipped at Montreat Presbyterian when he was not out of town preaching at his crusades. That was the first and only time I was around Billy Graham way before he left this ‘ole earth on February 21, 2018 at the age of 99. Today, you and I still have continual access to someone who goes beyond dignitaries and prominence. From his book Ephesians, Paul declares “He came and preached peace to you who were far away and peace to those who were near. For through Him we both have access to the Father by one Spirit.” Hebrews 10:19a also tells us we have confidence to enter the presence of God because of the blood of Jesus Christ. What are you doing with your access to the Creator of the universe, the person Jesus and the indwelling Holy Spirit?

hen you look back throughout history, one of the greatest shortfalls for us guys is an overall lack of communication. This glooming failure has been with us since the very beginning, all the way back to Adam and Eve. It has been the cause of arguments, led to problems in the workplace, even led to wars. It is something that we must ultimately and collectively improve upon if we are to effectively spread the gospel and be Godly examples to others in a lost world. James 1:19 says, “Know this my beloved brothers: Let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger.” Imagine to yourself if every person in every part of the world lived by this one verse! In reality, we do the opposite. We are slow to hear (if we hear at all), quick to speak, and anger quickly and easily. We are so anxious to make our point known in any situation that we, in many cases, have our reply on the tip of our tongue before the other person has finished talking. This leads to frustration, confusion, and usually ends in one or both parties getting angry. We are all encouraged to want to and are taught to express ourselves which is fine, but when it’s done at the expense of others we become a worldly distraction instead of a light in the darkness. We must listen! May it be our wives, our friends, our boss, or even our enemies, we must listen to what they have to say before we even think about replying.

40 //// September September 2018 42 2018

“Do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others” (Philippians 2:3-4). When attempting to communicate it is essential to put others before ourselves. God wants us to choose our words wisely, to “rejoice always” as said in 1 Thessalonians 5. To effectively get a point across it must be delivered in the right way. Even if it is a tough subject, it must be delivered with love. Proverbs 15:1-2 states, “A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. The tongue of the wise commends knowledge, but the mouths of fools pour out folly.” Much can be accomplished simply by listening to others. Even more can be done by answering those in the proper way, softly, wisely, and with love. When you think about it, the perfect example of how to communicate is Jesus Christ. How many times did He reply in anger, even when people were trying to trick Him or back Him into a corner? There was always a reply with love, wisdom, and patience. Our Savior is who we need to be looking to as we attempt to become better communicators to a lost world. He is who we should look to in all situations.

hronic joint pain can be debilitating. But the good news is, you don’t have to live with the pain. There are options, both surgical and non-surgical, that you can discuss with your doctor.

may also suggest that you consider a steroid injection. This is a common, yet often temporary treatment for arthritis, joint disease, and tendinitis.

Several different conditions can lead to joint pain. These conditions include:

If your everyday activities are being limited due to stiffness and pain and there is little relief from other treatments, your physician may recommend joint replacement surgery. Most people who have knee, hip, or shoulder replacement surgery experience a substantial reduction in the amount of pain they are having daily and are able to return to the activities they enjoy.

Joint Replacement

• Severe Fractures It is often possible to reduce and even completely eliminate joint pain through non-invasive measures. Exercise Exercise can play a positive role in eliminating joint pain. This is especially true for those who suffer from arthritis. Exercise can help to increase your body’s strength and flexibility. This in turn can reduce joint pain and fatigue. Keeping your muscles strong is important because they support your bones and joints. Talk to your doctor before you begin a new exercise plan. It is important to know which exercises are best for you and your joint condition. Low-impact exercises, including bicycling, water aerobics, and yoga, are often excellent choices. Weight Loss Another way to reduce joint pain is by losing weight. Excess weight can cause unneeded wear and tear on joints. If you need help creating or maintaining a weightloss plan, contact your doctor, personal trainer, and/or nutritionist. Physical Therapy Physical therapy is often an excellent way to relieve joint pain. Licensed physical therapists are trained to develop customized plans of care that are tailored to each patient’s specific condition. Medication Over-the-counter medications like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can often help to relieve joint pain. “Joint replacement is a very effective way to reduce and very often completely eliminate joint pain,” says orthopedic surgeon Mitch Frix, MD. “Joint replacement surgery has changed significantly over the years. Joint replacement designs have improved in function and longevity to benefit patients’ active lifestyles for a longer period of time.” Joint replacement surgery can often even be done on an outpatient basis. Advancements in joint replacement and surgical care services now allow for joint replacement patients to receive their surgery and return home in less than 24-hours! Most importantly, when considering joint replacement surgery, be sure to choose a hospital that is certified by The Joint Commission in hip, knee, and shoulder replacement. This means that the hospital has consistently demonstrated compliance with The Joint Commission’s national stateof-the-art standards for health care quality and safety in disease-specific care.

Callings

“W

by Paul McGuire

ho am I...that I should be…” (1 Samuel 18:18). Each of us has upon our lives a unique “calling” into the purposes of God. Not too many of us are given a public mantle to do deeds on some great stage. But to each the great planner has so designed a portion to fit well the doer. Grace flows for that portion - which may be seen by us as insignificant. But each “little” role has its significance in God’s grand design. As with a clockwork, if but one tiny gear lacks one tiny tooth, the mechanism will not function. All the parts are important! “The whole works because of its parts, when each part works as a whole” (PLB). “If all were an eye, where would be the sense of hearing...?” (1 Corinthians 12:17). Delight to fulfill well the unique role God has given you in His masterful plan. And do it with all your might. Then, look to Him to give you the sense of significance for which you may long. “And I, if I am lifted up...I will draw all men unto myself” (John 12:32, NASB).

He will draw us into His plans as we exalt Him. Then, as He reveals, go out in the strength that He gives. For He certainly gives grace for the journey. “How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of him who brings good news, who publishes peace, who brings good news of happiness, who publishes salvation, who says to Zion, ‘Your God reigns’” (Isaiah 52:7, ESV).

Paul McGuire has been born again for almost 60 years, and has pursued to hear God’s voice through all those years. He and his wife Teresa of 45+ years are active at Living Word Church in Cleveland, TN. They have two children and four-and-counting grandchildren.”
