Perhaps at no time in the 20 centuries of the Christian era has there been such a distortion of the true meaning of freedom as in the truth that makes one free. Today, influenced by the secular humanism of this century, the freedoms guaranteed by the US Constitution are interpreted by the court and legislative bodies of our country as the right to take the life of the unborn, the right to let a physician aid in ending one's own life, the right of the media to publish immoral matter, the right of our educational system to exclude religion from the public educations, and the right to publish pornographic filth. The Cross. The love that Jesus spoke of in His farewell address has the dimension of sacrifice, the sacrifice He was about to make on Calvary the following day: “Greater love than this no one has, that one lay down his life for his friends.” Love, as the world understands it, is essentially self-seeking. Love in the Christian sense is essentially self-sacrificing. The division between those whose first love is God and those who first love is self might also be expressed as the division between those who accept the place of the

emember the last time you seriously tried to lose some weight? You were probably on the scale every day, watching your weight and writing it down in a journal or saving it in notes on your cell phone. By monitoring your weight every day, you were able to know precisely how much progress (or regress) you were making toward your goal. Similarly, some people like to keep a prayer journal to track their spiritual growth; besides offering a place for spiritual reflection, a prayer journal also serves as a daily reminder to take time to talk to God. It’s the same with our finances. We can know we’re serious about improving our financial situation when we start “measuring” our goals by writing them down, and “managing” our finances by keeping a written budget and monitoring our progress (or regress) regularly. Let’s see how this might look in real life. Sally begins by making a personal “balance sheet” for the first time in her life. She lists all her debts (or “liabilities”) on one side of a document, noting the precise amounts she owes and the names of all her creditors. In her case, the list includes college student loans, a car loan, and a few credit cards. Then she makes a list of her “assets” or things she owns, including her checking and savings account balances and a ring her grandmother left her. Sally immediately notices that she has a “negative net worth,” meaning she has more debts than she has assets. Once she has “measured” her financial situation by writing it down, she is now ready to “manage” it. Without first being honest with herself by examining her finances, Sally would likely never take that next crucial step to improve herself

10 // October 2019

financially. She next makes a written budget of her monthly bills, and notices that she should, in theory, have nearly seven hundred dollars left over every month after paying all of her bills, including debt payments. Where has this extra seven hundred dollars been going? Sally has no clue, so she examines her past ninety days of bank statements, seeing where every debit card “swipe” went. She discovers to her dismay that her “leftover” cash had disappeared through shopping online and eating out. Chastened but determined, Sally makes a new written plan where she will intentionally direct that extra seven hundred dollars per month toward her debts, paying them off one by one, from smallest balance to the largest balance. To her surprise, she realizes she can be debt-free in only two years using this plan (if she takes an extra weekend job, she can do it even faster). This realization inspires Sally to begin exploring how to build up her assets as soon as her debts are paid off. She realizes she has never signed up for her employer’s 401(k) retirement plan at work, and she starts looking into that. Unfortunately, she realizes she has missed out on lots of “free money” over the years since her employer offers a five percent “match” when employees contribute to their 401(k) via payroll deduction. Sally commits to enrolling in the plan immediately in order to get that free money every month. She also educates herself about setting up a Roth IRA using low-cost stock index mutual funds. With these simple steps, Sally’s finances will experience a fabulous turnaround in just a few years, and within two decades, she should be quite wealthy. It starts with “measuring,” and then “managing.” “Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and He will establish your plans” (Proverbs 16:3).

But, what can we do about it? We have to have our phones to be able to communicate. But, do we just sit back and let this continue? Kids and teens of my generation are desensitized to

Gò0dNews for Parents

Just Because You Are You ive-year-old Joseph sat cross-legged in the floor, staring at the television. He watched Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood every afternoon. When the program ended, Joseph announced, “I like Mister Rogers. You know why I like him, Mama? Cause he likes me just the way I am.” I looked up from the button I was sewing back onto a shirt. “I like him, too.” And I did. I liked Fred Rogers’ philosophy of making each child feel good about himself or herself. I can’t count the times I heard him say something like, “You are special. I like you just because you are you. There is no one else exactly like you.” The year my son turned thirteen, I saw the difference a few positive words can make in a child’s life. Our church was in the midst of building a new sanctuary. Several members were in the construction business, so much of the work was performed by our own people. One Saturday morning, Joseph asked, “Will you take me to the church, Mama? I want to help with the roof.” The following Sunday, the preacher thanked the men and women who had given time to the project. “Could I say something, pastor?” Larry

Giles stood to his feet. He was a founding father of our church, a World War II veteran, a former POW, and a respected Bible teacher. “I echo your appreciation of the men and women who worked yesterday. One of those men was Joseph Ledbetter. I call him a man because he did a man’s job and hung in there just as long as any of the rest of us.” He looked at my son. “I’m proud of you, Joseph.” Joseph sat a little taller in the pew. His cheeks were a bit pink, and I could see he felt good about himself. He felt valued. He felt part of something big and important. Even as I type these words, tears well up in my eyes, tears of gratitude for the individuals who have affirmed my children through the years. Scripture tells us to “encourage one another day after day” (Hebrews 3:13). Paul instructed the Thessalonians to “encourage one another, and build up one another, just as you also are doing” (1 Thessalonians 5:11). Children are part of “one another.” They live in a world bombarded by voices that tear them down and tell them they are not enough. Let’s stand against those voices by taking advantage of opportunities to speak words of encouragement. I promise you, it will be time well spent. What if the child hasn’t accomplished anything special? Take a tip from Mister Rogers. Tell the child, “I like you just because you are you.” “A hundred years from now, it will not matter what my bank account was, the sort of house I lived in, or the kind of car I drove. But the world may be different because I was important in the life of a child.” –Forest E. Witcraft

mornings that afforded exactly what our bodies, minds, and souls needed—nothing. It wasn’t exactly “nothing,” but for two and a half hours, we did “nothing.” This “nothing” of an experience, however, reminded me of a few lessons. First, we all need respite. We live in such a fastpaced, winner-take-all society, that if we do not stop, rest and retool, we will quickly burn out. Once I plopped down into the inflated pink (yes, real men do wear pink!) inner tube, I didn’t have to decide much of anything. I rested in physics to take me where I should go. Second, as songwriter Jack Johnson put it, “It’s always better when we’re together.” As we checked in, we were given an additional strap to tether our tubes so that we could stay connected. We realized that we were on this journey together, and together, it would be fun.

support the idea of burning off a significant amount of fat

The Definition of “Tone” Usually, when people say they want to “tone up,” they have an image in their mind of a body where the muscles are harder looking and not hidden so much under a layer of fat. This is really talking about two things: first, losing some fat to turn a thicker layer of fat into a thinner layer, and second, building up or hardening the muscle underneath. So, what is the best way to achieve this? The Number One Exercise for Toning Physiologically, “muscle tone” describes the readiness of a muscle to contract or do work even when at rest. A muscle that lacks “tone” appears very slack or flaccid because the nervous system that turns on the muscle fibers has been largely disengaged

commissioned the Northwest Georgia Healthcare Partnership (NGHP), in coordination with the Elder Law

Practices of David McGuffey, to initiate a needs assessment study of disability services in the region. This collaborative effort resulted in the Northwest Georgia Developmental Disabilities Needs Assessment, a 148-page report which revealed that most families of children with disabilities had to travel long distances or out of state to receive needed services. “The needs assessment also showed that of all the disabilities prevalent in our area, autism was the most prevalent,” remarks Greg Dent, Chief Executive Officer for the NGHP. Determining the area’s needs and establishing a firstclass children’s institute to meet those needs are major steps forward, Dent says. The annual fall Autism Conference sponsored by the NGHP, he says, is yet another. “We now have a world-class institution in town for children with these types of disabilities. But we also need to have an accompanying world-class Autism Conference. And I believe we’re well on our way.”

Next year, during the 2020 Autism Conference, worldrenowned speaker Temple Grandin will give the keynote address, an event that both Dent and Coker expect will draw in participants from all over the U.S. and the world. For this year’s conference, multiple tracks will be offered, including those for educators, parents, ASD youth, Spanish-only speakers, and a new “clinicians’ track,” developed to help pediatricians recognize what warrants an autism referral. A highlight, says Coker, will be the talks from both speakers this year, Ursetti who will be the breakfast keynote speaker, and Gray, who will speak during the lunch hour. Gray is best known as the creator of “Social Stories,” a “social learning tool that supports the safe and meaningful exchange of information between parents, professions, and people with autism of all ages.” While NGHP’s Special Needs Services covers a wide range of learning disabilities and developmental delays, ASD has grown to be the major focus and support

Dent credits much of the annual conference’s exponential growth since it began in 2014 to the efforts of Lindsey Coker, formerly a special education teacher for both Whitfield and Dalton Public schools who is now Director of Special Needs Services for the NGHP. “This program has grown organically, by word of mouth,” Coker says. Last year, more than 300 attended and more than 40 vendors were on hand. This year promises to be much larger, she says, with at least 400 attendees and more than 50 vendors. The Fifth Annual North Georgia Autism Conference will take place at the Dalton Convention Center on Friday, October 18, from 8:00 am – 4:00 pm. Keynote speakers this year include Judith Ursitti, Director of State Government Affairs for Autism Speaks, and Carol Gray, Consultant

Coker coordinates all of the offerings, which include Parent Services; Teacher, Administrator and School Services; and Community Outreach Services. “The community outreach piece of our program has grown organically, and we’ve been able to offer such activities as Parents’ Nights Out, advocacy training classes, and a ‘Ready Retreat,’ a four-week Autism Summer Series for mild to moderately disabled youths aged 16-21 which focuses on facilitating life, self-help, job readiness and social skills. “Getting started early, specifically with autism, is critical,” she adds. “If we continue to educate our community, we can make sure these children and young adults can grow up to live independent, rewarding lives.”

I couldn’t understand why kids couldn’t like me for who I was. Fortunately, I attended a Christian school and a Christian college, so the peer pressure to do bad things or go bad places really wasn’t a factor in my life. I loved God and really wanted to please Him. I had learned over time that I wasn’t going to be able to please a lot of people. I was a pleaser by nature, so that was difficult to deal with emotionally. But, I sought solace in my relationship with God. Here’s the good news: God didn’t disappoint me.

Gò0dNews for Domestic Violence

My Story of Survival s I thought about how to put my story into words suitable for this magazine and still express emotion, both good and bad, I was stuck. How in the world can I narrow approximately 15 years of abuse down to one page? Domestic violence/abuse is a difficult topic to discuss. It’s just no fun to talk about, but it needs to be discussed, so let’s talk about it! Here’s the short version of my story of survival. It didn’t start out as abuse. There were good times. On the other hand, there were definitely more bad times than good. Here’s a surprise for y’all—the first of many, I’m sure. I was in two abusive relationships. One was far more abusive for my children and me than the other was. I was 18 when I married my first husband. The verbal, emotional, and physical abuse drained me. I stayed depressed more than happy. At the time, for my whole adult life, this was my “normal.” We had two children. Our daughter was born before we were married, and our son came 14 months after her. For 10 long years, I was an emotional wreck. I was verbally abused almost daily. During our marriage, he was an addict, which caused him to have highs and lows: good moods and really bad moods. We fought and argued in front of our kids most of their childhood. He was constantly moving in and out of the home. They still mention things from time to time that bother them. It wasn’t a safe environment at all for them. I had been stabbed once and threatened countless times with knives. Finally, in late 2008, I had enough. I was tired of it. I had to get out. For a while, my two older kids and I lived peacefully. Then, out of nowhere, there I was, stuck again: only this time, it was worse. I was pregnant during most of the relationship. We were only together for 16 long months. It was literally a daily fight for survival. I always had bruises on my arms, I often had black eyes, I had a broken jaw once, my hair was constantly pulled out by the handfuls, I was kicked, hit, and slapped, I had guns held in my mouth and knives held to my neck, and I was choked unconscious at least twice. When we found out that I was pregnant with a baby girl, he tried every way he could to make me have

34 // October 2019

a miscarriage. The verbal abuse was a constant thing. Of course, I could go on and on with stories of abuse, but I’d much rather tell you how I survived! God gave me the strength to overcome and survive every single situation. He healed my wounds, both internally and externally. He kept reminding me that He had a hedge of protection around me and my babies. Looking back, I remember certain situations. God sent people to me at the perfect time. He prevented situations from getting worse, and He gave me the strength to get out. I’ve had people ask me why I didn’t get out sooner or why I allowed it to continue. That’s the most insensitive thing to say to

a victim. I felt trapped and helpless. I had very low selfesteem. It’s not as easy as it may seem. So, in closing, I want to make it clear that I know that God was with me. I’m alive today because of Him. My baby girl was born healthy and whole from head to toe, and she is a prayer warrior already at the age of 8! God spared us both and protected my two other children. I don’t regret a day of it. I would do it all over again. It is my testimony! God has been so good to me. It’s an honor to witness to victims of domestic violence. Had I not at one time been a victim, I’d have no story to tell. If you know anyone who is a victim, please let them know that there is help; there’s hope. Joy comes in the morning! About The Author

Most of the time, we immediately think of all of the negatives, but there are many ways that singlehood can bring a fruitful and fulfilling life. Singles have more time to devote to serving and helping others. There aren’t as many demands on their time, so this opens up countless opportunities to bless others. There is a freedom that comes from being able to function and make decisions without having to include numerous other family members. Being able to come and go as needed opens up a whole new world for the single that the married person very rarely gets to experience.

When Simple is Enough few nights ago, my husband, daughter, and I were all sitting at our dining room table in our eat-in kitchen. We were eating, talking about our day, and laughing, and it hit me: this is exactly what I prayed for. Right then and there, I sat and took it all in—our small dining room table in our little house we purchased as our first home, which we love so much, our small TV in our living room that we rarely turn on, and my husband’s used car that he bought while he was in college—and I thought, “This is enough.” My husband and I have been throwing around the idea of moving: not because we don’t love our home and our neighbors, but because we would like to be a little closer to our families. While house hunting, of course you search for bigger and better: a formal dining room, a playroom, more square feet. “So-and-so has all of these things in their home; we should too.” It’s easy to get caught up in always wanting the next, best thing when all we really need to do is just stop and take in all of the little (and big) things God has blessed us with.

38 // October 2019

I am grateful for the simple life my little family and I live. We have a lot of love for one another and make many special memories with our daughter: memories that the “next, best thing” can’t give her. Philippians 4:19 says, “And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory

in Christ Jesus.” The Lord meets our needs daily and gives us more than any of us deserve. Next time you want something bigger and better or envy something your neighbor has, sit awhile, take in all of God’s blessings in your own life, and think, “This is enough.”

restaurants with an employee at our bank. She mentioned that her teenage daughter wouldn’t

accompany her to restaurants that serve traditional Southern cuisine such as fried okra, squash, and lima beans or anything else pertaining to vegetables, preferring traditional teenage fare such as pizza or hamburgers. Her explanation? “Mom, that’s old folks’ food!” We had a good laugh about that, and it quickly became a code word in our home for our favorite meals. My mother collected cookbooks, and her favorites were the oldest ones from the 1920s and 1930s, which were full of “old folks’ food.” She would pore over these books with the relish that usually accompanies a bestseller, but believe it or not, she hated cooking. She never used recipes except for special occasions. All our favorites were made from her memory, never to be replicated even by her own hands. Every meal was deliciously different. She taught me her methods, not her recipes, because many of them simply didn’t exist in written form. I had to purposely recreate this recipe to measure the ingredients so that I could share it. Usually served with cornbread, it was her absolute favorite “old folks’ food” and was involved in one of the last compliments my father ever paid me. I had made this recipe in the months before his death, and as I sat it down before him, he said, “You’re going to make a good cook.” Those words were one of the sweetest morsels I’ve ever ingested.

2. Set a goal bedtime. Look at the chart above to figure out how many hours your child needs to sleep. Then count backwards from when they need to get up in the morning so you know what time to plan for bedtime. Just like jet lag during travel makes it harder to fall asleep, sticking to the same bedtime every day makes it easier for your child to fall asleep. 3. Turn off electronics (TV, tablets, phones, and games) 30-60 minutes prior to bedtime. Turning them off is partly helpful because it is hard to stop exciting videos or games to go to bed. It is also important because the light from the screens can lower the melatonin made by your child’s body. This is a problem because melatonin is the hormone that helps you feel sleepy when it is bedtime. 4. Keep up a regular bedtime routine. Having a set of

Megan had been at CHOA for about two weeks when they told us things were going downhill fast. They told us it was looking like she would surely die. All her organs were failing now. We got on our knees, and we began to pray like we never had before in our life. We spoke life over her! That same day, my husband was in the room with her while I had gone down to get a bite to eat. As I came back upstairs, I saw doctors and nurses running in every direction. Somehow, I knew it was her. She had flatlined while my husband was standing there. The doctors crashed her onto a machine known as an ECMO machine. It was running her heart, lungs, and kidneys. It was just a bridge to transplant, and it was a long shot. She had been on ECMO for three days when the doctors said they would need to pierce the back of her heart to to bleed out. The doctors were certain she would bleed to
