The Balance of Fear

hat is fear and what does the Bible tell us about it? If you turn on your favorite Christian radio station, you have a pretty decent chance of hearing one of the many songs recently released about fear. It may be a song reminding us that fear is a liar or another breaking up with fear. It’s like everyone is finally realizing what the enemy has known all along. Fear is one of the greatest, if not the greatest, obstacle to the church. So, back to the question. The dictionary defines fear as “To be afraid of someone or something likely to be dangerous, painful, or threatening.” Now this can be the case for many people. Fear is often portrayed as evil or something bad. However, in biblical terms there are two different types of fear. The first of these two types is Godly fear, this type of fear should not be our “torment” but should be valued beyond all measure. This fear is what keeps us in spiritual grace with the Lord. The Bible tells us in Psalms 128:14, “How blessed is everyone who fears the LORD, Who walks in His ways. When you shall eat of the fruit of your hands, you will be happy and it will be well with you. Your wife shall be like a fruitful vine within your house, your children like olive

8 // October 2018

plants around your table. Behold, for thus shall the man be blessed who fears the LORD.” In the beginning of the verse it says “How blessed is everyone who fears the Lord.” God is clearly letting us know that the only fear we should have is the fear of God and his almighty power. The Bible tells us in Proverbs 22:4 “The reward of humility and the fear of the LORD are riches, honor and life.” We are told in this verse that we will be rewarded for fearing the Lord. This first kind of fear is a gift. It is an understanding of our relationship to our Lord and Savior. The second type of biblical fear is evil. It is the evil that paralyzes us. In the movies, it is monsters or boogie men. In reality it is whatever cripples us from doing what pleases God. It robs us of our potential and leaves us living lesser lives. The fear of evil can take on many forms. It can be as simple as being afraid of the dark or it can be fear of something more real like loss. Regardless, fear can replace God at the center of our thoughts. It is the same fear that caused the disciples to fear the storm with Jesus in the boat. John 4:18 tells us, “There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear.” When we keep God at the center of our thoughts, His authority overshadows anything the enemy could bring against us. Through putting him first we show Satan that he has no power over us. The chains of fear are broken at even the thought of God and his merciful ways. Matthew 10:28 tells us, “Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.” This verse sums up everything I have been sharing. We have no reason to fear anything in this world because we fear the only power that should be feared, Our Creator, Savior, and God. In closing, Paul puts it perfectly in 2 Timothy 1:7 when he writes, “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” This is my favorite verse to read when I am under attack by the enemy. It reminds me that the battle between these two kinds of fear is not a battle at all. Jesus has already won.

DOW 100,000? DOW 1,000,000? MONEY MATTERS WITH DR. ANDREW LEE

Dr. Andrew Lee is professor of English at Lee University. He also serves as a coordinator for Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University. He and his wife Esmerelda have three children.

I

’m writing this article for the October issue, and October has traditionally been one of the “scariest” months for the stock market (it’s Halloween, after all). In fact, October often shows a decline in at least some of the stock market indexes, with the worst example being the “Black Monday” crash of October 19, 1987 when the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA or simply “The Dow”) plummeted by over 22% in one day. So I thought, ironically, that October would be a good time to share some optimistic news about the stock market. Here it is: the Dow, which stands at around 26,000 points as of this writing, will reach 100,000 points in fifteen years if it averages 10% annually (including dividends) starting now, which is its historical average since 1926. Moreover, in approximately 38 years, the Dow would hit 1,000,000 (yes, one million) if it continued that 10 percent annual return. For the naysayers who point to 7.75% annually as the historical return of the Dow since 1926 (which excludes dividends reinvested), it would still hit the 100,000-point milestone in eighteen years instead of fifteen. I realize the Dow is a list of merely 30 stocks, and that it doesn’t really represent the entire stock market. But nevertheless, the Dow is a useful measure of the larger markets, for as the Dow rises, so too typically do stock indexes like the S&P 500, Nasdaq, and the Wilshire 5000 since these most often (but not always) correlate over long periods of time. Certainly, there will be years when the market has a negative return, and perhaps even loses 30 percent or more in a single year. But over longer time periods, the

10 // October 2018

market tends to revert to its historical annual average return (hence the term “historical average”). So when is the “best” time to invest in the stock market? For those who have been eagerly hoping for the answer to this burning question, write this down quickly! Here are the top three times to invest in the stock market, ranked in order: (1) many years ago (2) yesterday (3) today. You get my point—the time is “now.” Trying to time the market and “sit on the sidelines” until the “big drop in stock prices” happens is a mistake. Think of the many people who pulled their investments out of the market during the 2008-09 “crash” and sat on the sidelines for the past decade waiting for the right moment to “jump back in” the market. They have missed a chance to more than triple their money over the past ten years (ouch). And here’s another fact: the stock markets overall go “up” about 75% of the time. By this, I don’t mean to imply that markets will be “up” three out of every four days. In any given year or period of years, anything is possible and unpredictable. But historically, the markets rise much more than they fall. So the odds are, your investments in the overall market will grow over time, especially over longer periods of ten years or more. I sell neither stocks nor mutual funds; as the saying goes, “I have no dog in this hunt.” But if you have money set aside for a long-term goal—such as retirement or kids college—and you kept it in a bank account or under a mattress for the next ten, twenty, or thirty years, you may regret that decision when the Dow hits 100,000. Proverbs 12:5a—“The plans of the righteous are just . . .”

Gò0dNews for Women

Stuck On I Don’t Know ave you ever just been doing life and out of nowhere something hits like a wrecking ball? Plans you once had have changed and you have to adjust to the damage. I call the wrecking ball “Cancer” and it’s been swinging in my family’s direction for the past 8 years. My husband is the afflicted one and bless him, he wants nothing more than to be a part of what’s taking place in our lives, but many times we have been stuck on I don’t know. How do we plan for that vacation? Will he be able to attend that school event of the kids? Will he be doing that family function? That church function? We’ve experienced times of rest during this trial, in which planning was a bit easier, but generally speaking we’ve just not been able to make plans too far ahead as we simply don’t know what his physical state will be. Today we are stuck on I don’t know bigger than ever! My husband is reaching the point where having the gift of life comes by the day. Currently in treatment, in which he’s still trying to decide if it’s worth it, but still battling because he says, “I have plans, things I want to do.” Yet we aren’t even sure he will have the strength to carry out those plans. We have a daughter about to attend college out of state. His participation? Unlikely. We have our home listed to sell because he and I are making plans to downsize and enjoy a new home together

14 // October 2018

that we both love, and we still have that Atlanta Braves game we want to go to and now have tickets for. Daily we are left questioning will all this happen like we are planning for it to happen? Despite the wreckage, we still make plans for our future together. It’s called living. I am not a huge planner outside normal responsibilities. I am not the wife and mother with the day planner. Perhaps it’s because of the journey we’ve walked the past 8 years, who knows, but my husband is and has always been a planner. He asks the night before, “What’s the plan for tomorrow?” No matter, people plan don’t they? Being stuck on I don’t know can get scary and overwhelming so it’s super important to remember that God knows! He has plans of good for you, so always include him! When we include God it changes the fears into faith and prepares us on how to react when He changes our plans. When we make plans, maybe it’s best to hold onto them loosely because God’s plans may be different for us. Ultimately, the future is in God’s hands. In James 14 it says, “How do you know what your life will be like tomorrow? Your life is like the morning fog-it’s here a little while, then it’s gone.” It really just comes down to the day! Breathe and remember your future is in the best hands and He is making a way for you! Instead of being stuck on I don’t know, get stuck on resting in the Father to carry you through because He is the one who holds tomorrow.

Chicken Potpie

“T

by Deana Thompson

o everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven” (Ecclesiastes 3:1). Whether it is the trees, the animals, your family, your job, or your spiritual life, everything goes through seasons. Solomon, however, does not tell us to compare the different seasons—which one is better. He is merely stating a fact of life; there is a time for everything. Sometimes we get caught up in comparing the seasons. Fall is better than spring, or our family life was better when the children were little, or God used me so much more 20 years ago. Your life right now may seem like a potpie: a boiling mixture of everything insulated (or isolated) under a blanket of crust. Seasons will come and go at their appointed time; you cannot rush them or change them. Whatever season you are in spiritually or relationally, know that it will change. It may not change through your force or when you want it to, but it will change according to God’s timetable—just as autumn faithfully follows summer around the same time every year.

Ingredients

• ½ c. chopped onion • ½ c. chopped fresh mushrooms • ¼ c. unsalted butter • ½ c. freshly-milled soft white wheat flour, or 1/3 c. all-purpose flour • 2 c. chicken broth • ¾ c. milk • ½ tsp. salt • ½ tsp. sage • 1/8 tsp. pepper • 15-oz. can mixed vegetables, drained • 3 c. diced cooked chicken • ¼ c. snipped fresh parsley, or 2 Tbsp. dried parsley • 2-oz. jar chopped pimiento • 2 ¼ c. freshly-milled soft white wheat flour, or 2 c. all-purpose flour • 4 Tbsp. baking powder • ½ tsp. cream of tartar • ¼ tsp. salt • 1/8 tsp. baking soda • ½ c. unsalted butter, softened • 2/3 c. buttermilk

Directions

16 // October 2018

1. In a large saucepan, cook onion and mushrooms in the ¼ c. butter over medium heat until tender. Stir in the ½ c. flour. 2. Whisk in the chicken broth and milk until smooth. Add the ½ tsp. salt, sage, and pepper. Cook over medium heat until thickened and bubbly, stirring often. 3. Stir in the mixed vegetables, chicken, parsley, and pimiento. Heat until bubbly. 4. While the chicken mixture is heating up, make the biscuit topping: a. In a medium bowl, combine the 2¼ c. flour, baking powder, cream of tartar, the ¼ tsp. salt, and baking soda. b. Using a pastry blender, cut in the ½ c. softened butter until the mixture resembles coarse meal. c. Add the buttermilk. Stir until the dough is wet but not sticky. (Add more flour if it is too wet; add more buttermilk if it is too dry and the flour is not sticking together). 5. Pour the chicken mixture into an 8x12 baking dish. 6. Roll out, or pat out, the biscuit dough ½”- ¾” thick and into an 8x12 rectangle. Place the dough over the chicken mixture. (Or you can cut the dough into round biscuits and place them over the chicken mixture.) 7. Bake in a 450°F oven for 12-15 minutes, or until biscuits are golden brown.

Gò0dNews for Parents

The Father Allows he day arrived and along with my golf bag and clubs, I carried all the associated anticipation, excitement, and butterflies I normally experienced before a competition. It remains a highlight in my golf career. By virtue of a top ten finish in the South Carolina Junior Championship, I qualified to play in the first annual Georgia/South Carolina Junior Team Match competition. Unknown at the time, Georgia fielded a stellar team. Two Georgia players went on to win two of golf’s

majors, the PGA Championship and The Masters. One other played the PGA Tour and the others became accomplished amateur players. I was the only South Carolina player to remain in golf. It’s a nice history, but not the story. The match was held at Houndslake Country Club in Aiken, South Carolina, an hour from my home. Mom and Dad accompanied me. Dad caddied for me but was not allowed to give me advice, nor was I allowed to ask him. Particular in my memory, the match reached the fourteenth hole, a downhill par-five, an easy threeshotter with a lake lurking around the second shot. The lake guarded the green against a risk-taking, rewardseeking player deciding to go for it in two. Having

played a sufficient tee shot, I stood at the moment of decision. Down in the match, I needed a birdie. Remembering, time slows in my memory. My movements possessed a hesitation replete with indecision and desire for advice. Dad stood calmly while I fidgeted and fretted. We traded eye contact and my body language begged for an answer from him. None was forthcoming. We knew the rules. From this instant, my memory echoes. Symbolism and crossroads root deep in reality. There, my Father stood, loving, supporting, allowing. And there, I stood, treading in all the freewill allotted me. I drew upon all the resources living inside me, all that had been given to me. I knew, not by some common sense of knowing, beneath the superficial consequences of any decision I made, my Father was present. Dependence and freedom played me equally, each with its own allure and reason. Logic is not wisdom’s only guest. Freewill, the seemingly illogical and elusive, extreme edge of loving, a love reaching for joy while risking pain through the giving and receiving, is wisdom’s guest, too. This moment pervaded defining, and anything defined well is defined long. Imprinted on my eternity, this moment with my Father present, silent in word, seared its meaning through wisdom’s allowance. I knew my Father would always be there, loving, allowing, and waiting for my return. Dad is gone now, but not from me. His presence remains. He lives within me. I am my Father’s son. I returned from where He allowed me to go, the untethered reaches of love. Someone may ask, “Why would God allow this to happen?” Because God lives at the extreme edge of love, too, waiting for our return. “Those who have ears to hear, let them hear” (Matthew 11:15, NKJV). Gò0dNews for Health & Fitness by Megan Stockburger

f you are like most people, it is hard to avoid sitting these days. Many of us work in front of a computer, commute in a car to work, sit for meals, and even during our leisure time at home! A new survey by Ergotron, a global manufacturer of furniture and mobility products, found that the average American spends up to 13 hours sitting every day! Obesity rates, cardiovascular disease, and other chronic conditions continue to rise and physical inactivity is the fifth largest risk factor for global mortality. Our incredibly poor eating habits and smoking are still greater risks, but research is now looking at our sedentary lifestyles as an independent risk factor—even if you exercise! Here are some simple habits to incorporate into your busy schedule to work toward better health. 1. Get up once per hour. Getting 30 minutes of daily physical activity is a great start, but it is often not enough to offset 7+ hours of sitting at a desk job, with another five hours sitting the rest of the day. A 2016 study in the International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity found that spreading out physical activity throughout the day improved mood, decreased feelings of fatigue, and had a positive effect on appetite. Try setting reminders for yourself throughout the day to get up and take a lap around the office or perform some quick body-weight movements like squatting, twisting, and touching your toes to get your blood flowing and your muscles moving. Adding short, fiveminute breaks every hour was enough in another study to reduce the risks significantly. 2. Turn off the electronics. Social media and T.V. are often mindless tasks that discourage productivity and cause even more stress. A recent study in the Lancet found that TV watching is even worse than just sitting and that five hours of TV viewing per day will increase your mortality risk, no matter how much you exercise! Better to keep it at an average of just 1-2 hours a day, at the most!

24 // October 2018

3. Plan exact times and workouts. James Clear, an author and avid weight lifter who specializes in creating good habits, cites a study in the British Journal of Health Psychology where participants nearly tripled their participation rates in exercise by simply being asked to state exactly when and where they intended to exercise. Planning is stronger than willpower. Also, it is wise to develop back-up plans in advance. For example, you could think, “If I work late and can’t make it to the gym, then I will do a quick workout video at home or walk around the neighborhood once I’ve got the kids in bed.”

4. Find someone to keep you accountable. Whether you enlist a friend, hire a personal trainer, or join a group class setting, finding a way to be accountable is usually the best way to establish a regular exercise routine. Showing up and starting tends to be half the battle. Peer influence is a powerful motivator and pairing up with a friend or colleague provides mutual accountability to help you succeed. In addition, you’ll have someone there to spot you and cheer you on toward your best workout possible!

worries, because walk-ins are always welcome at Pray Chiropractic. You are quickly taken back for a gentle, pain relieving adjustment by either Dr. Holden or Dr. Rivera and it’s then time to relax with a soothing therapy or spinal decompression treatment by our highly trained staff. You are now on your way to feeling great and ready to take on the day.

Pray Chiropractic has been voted North Georgia's Best of the Best Chiropractic office nine years in a row. Over the past 22 years, the doctors at Pray have successfully treated tens of thousands of patients in the North Georgia area and they have now brought their unique and successful brand of care to Dalton.

Best of the Best

Dr. Luis Rivera was handpicked by Dr. Pray for Dalton, as he uses the same effective “hands-on” adjusting style that patients have become used to at Pray Chiropractic’s Ringgold location. Dr. Rivera and the majority of his Dalton staff are completely

bilingual in both Spanish and English. Dr. Rivera graduated from Life Chiropractic College in 1998 and he holds chiropractic licenses in both Georgia and Puerto Rico. Dr. Rivera maintained a successful chiropractic practice while continuing

his military service in Afghanistan and Iraq. While deployed in Afghanistan, he helped relieve the headaches, neck and back pain that many military personnel there were experiencing. Dr. Rivera is currently a Lieutenant Colonel serving in the U.S. Army military reserves. He and his wife Jacqueline have been married for 26 years and have four boys, two are currently in college and the twin 14year olds are in high school. Dr. Rebecca Holden recently joined Pray Chiropractic’s Dalton office where she treats patients of all ages using her gentle form of

chiropractic. Dr. Holden decided to pursue a career in Chiropractic after witnessing her mother’s successful treatment for her back when she was younger. Dr. Holden obtained her Doctor of Chiropractic from Sherman College of Chiropractic in Spartanburg, South Carolina where she graduated class valedictorian and gave the commencement speech to her fellow graduates. Dr. Holden says, “I didn’t know the power of chiropractic until I saw it for myself. That’s when I knew I wanted to be able to help people and change their lives naturally without drugs or surgery.” Dr. Holden gives her best to her patients daily so they can be their best. Dr. Holden and her husband, Wayne, are proud foster parents. They live in Dalton with their six children.

Hi-Tech Office

Always on the cutting edge, Pray Chiropractic was the first chiropractic office in the country to offer digital x-rays in 2005. The Dalton location not only offers the latest on-site digital x-ray system, but also computerized spinal decompression therapy for both the neck and lower back areas. According to Angela Cuzzort, the Case Manager at Pray Chiropractic, decompression therapy has been so effective at treating neck, back, and leg pain from disc conditions that

the Dalton location has had to add its fourth table to accommodate the demand. Pray Chiropractic is also excited to offer a new 15-watt Deep Tissue Laser (DTL) that has been amazing at providing pain relief, sometimes immediate, with a wide variety of conditions such as carpal tunnel, shoulder, knee, and foot pain.

No Bankers’ Hours

Although the Dalton building’s original design was that of a bank, you won’t find us having bankers’ hours here. The Dalton location, like the Ringgold location, has hours to accommodate even the busiest of schedules. On weekdays, the Dalton office offers early morning appointments starting at 7am and late-night appointments until 7:00PM. If you are too busy to get in during the week, it’s not a problem. Pray Chiropractic is open every Saturday morning from 8am until noon. Have pain that can't wait? Not a problem. Walk-ins are always welcome for your convenience. Look for the new digital sign outside the office, displaying the latest information about the practice and its offerings. For more information on Pray Chiropractic simply stop by the office, call 706-609-0023, or visit our website at praychiro.com.

Many of their biographies contain sentences like this: “Being deprived of their pulpits, they took up their pens.” Puritans aimed to equip their people to live as befits the gospel, and that meant knowing how to serve others. To that end, they published books and sermons for fathers, mothers, children, servants, masters, rulers, and everyone in-between. These “directories” were manuals of rich spiritual counsel, carefully mined from Scripture, clearly explained and expressed, so that each person could learn how God wants them to love him and “all our fellow-men” (Nicolas Bownd). y wife and I wanted to introduce ourselves and Biblestudycompany.com to you. Ask yourself this question: “Am I a disciple of Jesus Christ?” If you answer; “Well of course Ric, I have known the Lord for several years and or I grew up in a Christian home.” Sorry, but that doesn’t make you a disciple of the word of God. We were on the “hamster wheel” of Christianity, attending church, buying the latest book, or chasing the next “move of God”. We drifted away from our Savior and each other. Why? Because we weren’t studying

the word of God ourselves, but instead we expected to be “fed” by someone. Scripture is poignant about our personal study of God’s word. 1 John 2:26-27 says, “These things I have written to you concerning those who are trying to deceive you. As for you, the anointing which you received from Him abides in you, and you have no need for anyone to teach you; but as His anointing teaches you about all things, and is true and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you abide in Him” (NASB). As a couple, my wife and I started studying scripture together and separately. We call ourselves “pew-sitters”. Who were the disciples? People like us. Our mission is to go from pew-sitter to disciple.

32 // October 2018

As Christians with many ups and downs over the years, we almost lost our marriage. Today our marriage is healthy, strong, and we are walking in “one flesh”. Yes, this is a real thing. But what changed for us? Our approach to the Bible changed. We no longer study Scripture for knowledge ‘about’ God, but with asking “How do we respond to You?” The truth that God is our creator and that He made each of us for a purpose grew. As we became serious about handling His Word correctly, He gave us more “mind openers” (Luke 24:44-46). Our goal now is to live a praiseworthy life to God, His agenda not ours. This is being a disciple of Jesus Christ (Matthew 12:47-50). We started in Exodus. When the children of Israel were attacked, we were strangely attacked! We asked God tough questions that we had trouble grasping. He answered! Our “flesh” resisted studying (Gal 5:15). We both felt awkward. Praying at the table? No problem! Studying Scripture? Hard! But God gave us the grace to push forward. The disciples had an excellent teacher and we do, too. He is called the word of God! The presence of the Lord and scripture invade our lives! Our prayers were aligning with His will and they started to get answered! God brought people into our lives that needed Him. What an adventure! Nothing in our prior Christian walk has matched this depth of joy. We even started a podcast to discuss these items. We are looking to fellowship with people who want to live a praiseworthy life to God. If you are one of those, give us a shout.

Single Elegance

y beloved spake, and said…Rise up, my love…and come away” (Song of Solomon 2:10). I didn’t want to be single again, but I am, just me again. How do you walk in a phase of your life you weren’t prepared to re-enter? How do you honor God in a consequence that feels so unfair, so painful so undeserved? But here I am, years later, still single; yet in spite of the losses, disappointments, readjustments, and sense of failure, I am experiencing God’s joy, peace,

hope, ability to forgive and accept His ministry of reconciliation. The empty spaces are filled with Him and I feel free and complete and continue to be amazed at how He is transforming my life and using me in ways that He never could had I not become single again. God revealed to me just how He was using me and my painful journey back to singleness, in a recent conversation with my former pastor, as he confessed to me that he and his wife had been talking about me. I was immediately curious about the details and content of the words spoken between them. He explained how amazed he and his wife were at the courage, grace, and strength I have shown in dealing with my intense trial. He and his wife called me the epitome of Christian elegance and I was overwhelmed by their words and humbled to say the least. All I know is that God has allowed certain things

36 // October 2018

to happen in my life because He trusted me to steward well this particular trial. He wanted to work out His purpose in my life through this painful process and grow me so that He would be glorified in how I responded. I understand that what I experience here on earth is just a small sample of the ultimate spiritual warfare being played out over my life in a realm I cannot see. I feel privileged to be trusted by God to represent Him and stand as His ambassador. What is moving me forward is the knowledge that I am loved. Let me shout it out: I am loved! Everything that I have experienced is not wasted and is working together for my good and has been allowed by my beloved. He loves me too much to be solely concerned with my comfort so He has divinely ordained an alteration. He has told me that my latter will be greater than my beginning and he has told me that I will rise to new heights in Him. He has also told me to come away, and as I have spent more time with Him I have gained a new perspective which has altered my mind and responses. The definition of elegance is: style, good taste, gracefulness, refinement, class, taste, chic and sophistication. Initially I looked at this definition and could not see any aspects of myself in the description but I realize that all of us who have chosen to become new creatures in Christ will display Christian graces which in essence are the Fruits of the Spirit! I am standing on the strength of Jesus Christ and by his power I am able to stand in silent strength and confidence; I can stand equipped with grace under pressure, I can let go and forgive without a thought of revenge and I can look at all that is reality as temporary, knowing that what I can’t see is eternal. I am smiling as I write because I am now content in this phase of my journey. My hope and expectation is in God. I want what He wants for me! He is my companion and takes great care of me! May we all strive to be what God intended us to be! About The Author

If the person is on pain medication, record each time it is taken so information can be given to the healthcare provider as needed. • Personal hygiene care can be accomplished easier with the use of a shower chair. • Socialization balance can be achieved with periods of visitation and rest. Reinhardt University,

Dalton area enjoy strong 135-year relationship

S

by Tim Norton

ince its founding in 1883, Reinhardt University, located in northwest Cherokee County – just a short 50-mile drive from Dalton, has enjoyed long, strong connections to Dalton, Whitfield County and the greater Northwest Georgia region. In fact, it was two "preacher and teacher for the children of Cherokee County” from the Methodist Episcopal Church South in Dalton, the organization that preceded today’s United Methodist Church. From humble beginnings, with the first 12 students meeting in a cabinet shop near the present-day main campus in Waleska to about 1,550 students today, Reinhardt University remains committed to three values that have been at the heart of the institution since those earliest days: Faith. Learning. Leading. Students, faculty, coaches, staff and Board of Trustees’ members from the Dalton area have been an integral part of the fabric of the University, including current Board of Trustees’ chair, C. Kenneth White ‘61, and former Board members Jim Boring, James Brown and Bob McIntyre. Just recently, Reinhardt was recognized as the 25th Best Regional College by U.S. News & World Report. What is remarkable is that Reinhardt jumped 29 spots, from No. 54 two years ago to the No. 25 spot this year. Almost at the same time, College Consensus, a ranking that places strong emphasis on student evaluations and published data, ranked Reinhardt as No. 10 among all public and private institutions in the state of Georgia. One reason for its recently strengthened reputation are the great people who lead, coach, teach and support students who enroll at Reinhardt University, including

former Daltonian head men’s and women’s tennis coach, Jennifer Bryans Pourchier. Pourchier, the former Southeast Whitfield High School standout tennis player who achieved an undefeated four years as the #1 tennis player and went on to play at NCAA Division I Middle Tennessee State University, has helped propel Reinhardt University forward and achieve its mission “to create a unique Reinhardt Experience where each student thrives.” Now in her 14th season at the helm of its tennis program, Pourchier has achieved great success on the court with her team making the NAIA National Tournament and being named Former standout tennis player in the early 1990s, Jennifer Bryans Pourchier Appalachian – shown here with husband, Jeffrey Pourchier – Reinhardt's associate athletic director – has led Reinhardt University’s men’s and women’s tennis programs to great success over her 13 seasons as head tennis coach. Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in both 2017 and 2018. Over the years, Pourchier’s teams have been leaders in the classroom, too, always recording among the top GPAs of all athletes at Reinhardt. Just as it was 135 years ago when Reinhardt and Sharp approached the residents of Northwest Georgia requesting support for education, today’s Reinhardt University leadership knows and appreciates the relationships that have helped build Reinhardt. For more information on one of Reinhardt’s 40plus undergraduate programs – including its newest program, the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program, one of its five graduate programs – including its growing Master of Business Administration and Master of Public Administration programs, or about its variety of degree completion and online offerings, please see Reinhardt.edu or call 1-87-REINHARDT.

There remained a sense of “more” in my soul; however, I have not been able to move beyond “I’m not done yet. It’s time for you to be quiet.” In the quiet, I discovered a healing that can only come from the Lord. I discovered that during the quiet, He calls us to be still and know that He is our God (Psalm 46:10). It’s in the quiet times that God is still with us!
