ou can pay me now; or, you can pay me later.” If you were around in the 1970’s, you will recall that was the byline of the Fram Filter’s TV advertising. The ad was built around the philosophy that if you did not properly take care of your auto, your long-term maintenance costs would be greater. Much the same can be said about choosing a tax preparation firm. In my opinion, people fall prey to less than full disclosure advertising. There are any number of intentional slants to the advertising of most franchised income tax preparation firms and some individuals who prepare income tax returns but are not licensed or regulated by any accounting regulatory bodies. If it sounds too good to be true, it will be! In the 1960’s, Henry and Richard Bloch recognized that there was a void in the tax preparation community. Lower to middle-income-earners generally could not afford the preparation fees of most CPA firms, so, they created H & R Block. $5.00 was the fee for a simple tax return. The void was filled and the beginning of a major industry was set in motion. My, how things have changed. H & R Block amply filled that void for many years, then other concepts began to enter their business philosophy. One of the first was the Rapid Refund. Once a client’s return was prepared and it was determined a refund was due, the client could elect to receive a nearly on-the-spot refund as a portion of the total refund. Whoa – unfortunately most of those clients either failed or didn’t care what the true cost was of getting that refund. But, the profit motive spawned a new generation of franchised tax preparation firms.
10 // October 2017
Several years ago, the Internal Revenue Service eliminated the Rapid Refund, primarily in my opinion, because the fees being charged were usurious. That’s a ten-dollar financial word for “ripping off the customer.” Variations of that concept continue to exist although the process has changed dramatically. Without going into any detail, the franchised tax preparation industry also recognized other profitmaking opportunities to offer their clients. One of which is real estate mortgages. I’ll close this section with a French term taught all college business majors, “caveat emptor.” Translated, that means, “Let the buyer beware.” Enough said. Here are some real facts to consider. CPA’s are required by most states to have the equivalent of 40 hours of continuing education each year. In smaller firms like mine, the majority is dedicated to taxes. The franchised firms offer a tax education course that meets certain requirements of the IRS, and the applicant passes a test to get a specific tax preparer identification number. Most of those preparers are paid an hourly wage that is somewhat better than the minimum wage plus being promised certain production bonuses. The truth is, that one may be required to have several years of such employment before the bonuses have any real value. Get a fee estimate from both a tax service and a CPA. You might be very surprised. Caveat emptor!
Ron Peterson is a practicing CPA in Chatsworth who also holds life and health insurance licenses. In addition to his many years of public accounting experience, he also served as CFO of several large organizations and as a corporate operational consultant.

Parenting Isn’t Easy
P
by Marie Green
arenting is hard. Every child is different, and God doesn't have an angel in place at the hospital giving out your personal owner manuals when you get ready to leave. We have to learn their cues and cries in the early beginning. That quickly gives way to the hard stuff: parenting and discipline. I'm a licensed educator, and I have taken many children behavior and physiology classes, and I am currently raising two children, but I’ve always struggled parenting. How much is too many responsibilities? What chores at what age? Allowance or just appreciate a roof and food? I finally got some clarity after hearing author Andy Andrews speak. It was the most profound parenting advice ever! I will never forget it, and I pass it along as often as possible. Simple. Clear. Easy to follow. In true Andrew style, he was pacing the stage talking with his hands and making silly jokes. Mid story, he stopped and said he had one piece of advice for ALL parents. He stopped moving and became serious. He explained when you think about it in its simplicity, no one can argue it. He told us it would be life changing. Everyone was on the edge of their seats, pens and journals ready to document this ground breaking knowledge. You are not trying to raise good kids. You are trying to raise good ADULTS. Wait? That’s it? I was ready to scribe a page full of nuggets to help this parenting job. He went on to

explain. If you’re facing a decision about parenting, ask yourself, “Does this help mold a good adult? A functioning member of society?” The more I digested this, the more I remembered our very first couple’s Bible study. One lesson taught us the most important thing you can do for your kids is not put them first. Do not eat, sleep, and breathe your kids, letting your marriage starve. You married the person for a reason with a covenant with God. Don’t let that get lost in shuttling to practices, spending every moment with your child, or going broke trying to fuel their every desire. The kids will be gone one day. I finally got it! God wants me to love and put my husband first to help raise good adults. Think about it: our children become who we are, sometimes almost carbon copies. Scarier, studies show we usually marry someone with the same characteristics of our parents. If you’re putting your spouse first and raising your children in a loving Christian home, you’re teaching life lessons that mold and produce wonderful adults. You’re teaching them how to solve conflict with others, in relationships and work place. Not everything goes your way. Life is give and take. You have to balance time and activities. Life is hard work, but you don’t give up. The end rewards are worth it. It's Heaven. Marie Green is blessed to be the mother of 12 year old Libby, 6 year old Nelson, and married to her wonderful husband of 13 years, Richie. As director of Mount Vernon Learning Center, she is able to have the dream job of supporting her home church, Mount Vernon United Methodist, and working with the most amazing team.

fter many years, comparisons, and inquiries, my husband and I are finally watching Friday Night Lights, a television drama based on the bestseller by H.G. Bissinger profiling the trials and tribulations of a coach, a town, and high school football. The show centers around the football coach and his wife, the school counselor, hence the comparisons to me and my husband. (A little disclaimer here: much of the show’s content is for mature audiences and does not portray a Biblical worldview.) However, we laugh at just how many of the conversations we have had in our living room that Coach Taylor and his wife have in theirs. A recent episode really grabbed my attention, but not for the usual football banter I enjoy. In this episode, one of the characters, Jason Street, who is a quadriplegic, learns that he could possibly be a father. He had previously been told this was medically impossible due to his injury. As the mother of the baby considers an abortion, Jason gives a most powerful speech regarding the sanctity of life. “There’s a baby in there. There’s a little person... with little fingers, with little toes and a little heartbeat. His eyes are all scrunched up and he’s in a ball. Aren’t you at least a little bit curious? You have a human life in there! That little person could be the next Bill Gates or Peyton Manning. This could be the most important decision we will ever make...so please give it a chance (Jason Street, Friday Night Lights).” As he posed this series of questions and scenarios about the baby in her womb, I couldn’t help but wonder when was the exact moment that humankind strayed
22 // October 2017
from God’s blueprint for His children. Was it one person or a series of events that chose to disregard the fact that God “knit us together in our mother’s womb?” A recent NPR article reported that abortions fell to their lowest level last year since that fateful decision back in 1973, Roe vs. Wade. The report goes onto say that according to the Guttmacher Institute, the total number of abortions in 2013 fell below a million for the first time since the mid-1970s. These statistics may be reported as a “favorable trend” but that’s over 40 million abortions in that last 40 years. Oh how it must grieve our Heavenly Father to watch us be so very careless with His handiwork and one is left questioning how in the world will we ever reverse field? I cannot say that I have figured out this answer, but I can say that we must begin with believing what His Word tells us, believing His truth. Scripture outlines just how God numbered the hairs on our heads and how He loves us and how He has plans for us. To fully understand the sanctity of life, we have to embrace the sanctity of His word. If you have children, use the scriptures to remind them and yourselves just what a masterpiece you are. Remind them that human life begins in the womb with a “little heartbeat” and most importantly remind them that they have a Heavenly Father who takes pleasure in watching His creation get their “chance” at life. Who knows, he or she could be the next Billy Graham!

Strength Training for Runners
We want to get faster, run farther, be more efficient, and stay injury free. But if we hope to reach this goal we must do more than just run. by Megan Stockburger

and true and can be great for both injury prevention and performance. Whether your goal is simply to run easier with less pain or to run faster in your next race, a few strength sessions a week can be a huge help. While building your aerobic engine through running, strength training is one of the best non-running ways to boost performance. For example, multiple research reviews have concluded that strength training improves running economy. By strengthening the core and key muscles used in the hips and thighs, it was found that runner’s muscles were less fatigued by their endurance sessions which enabled them to maintain better form and efficiency with longer runs.

they quit the strength training altogether, only to once again get injured. Don’t let that be you! This is easily avoidable by adopting a quality strength training program to get your muscles ready and strong for the next big event. If you follow a training plan, strength train heavier at the beginning and taper off as the endurance phase increases. Short and middle distance runners (like 5K runners) can strength train 2-3 times a week straight through. Even once a week will work as long as it is progressive. Lift weights after your moderate runs or on an off day. There is so much to be gained from a proper strength training program, so make plans to add it to your routine today! remember the first time it happened. After the shock, I went from anger into complete denial. I was caught completely off guard and not a bit amused. I had stepped into a fast food restaurant to get a cup of coffee. When the total was rung up it was less than what I had expected. I had been given the senior rate, without even asking for it. I still don’t consider myself a senior even though I have four grandkids with another on the way, AARP keeps sending me letters saying they need me, I get free stuff all over town just for showing my driver’s license, and what hair I have left is, how should I say it, a distinguished shade of silver. All levity aside, most of us in the senior category these days are still very active. I have more dreams now than I ever have had; I would need to clone myself to accomplish them all. Which brings me to my point, how do I choose what activities or interests to say yes to and what is less worthy of my effort? Matthew 25:21 says this, “Well done good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!” In Jesus’s day it was common to have people who managed and cared for a masters property and servants. resources that we can leverage for God’s purposes. Below are four areas I want to be found faithful in by my Master. They all start with the letter T.I want to be faithful with my Time, Talent, Treasure and the Truth. Time – We all have 24 hours each day. What an incredible gift God has given us to use for his kingdom. Some of us have retired and can now choose where we invest our time and energy. Others of us have greater flexibility with our schedule than when we started working. Either way, ask God how you can manage this resource to maximize His interest. Talent – Our culture may value the youthfulness of its younger generation but we have a wealth of skills and experience that you gain only by living on this planet. Share it! Treasure – It is incredible to think that God can take what I give and make a difference for the His Kingdom. Whether the widows mite or a great sum, where can I maximize the Master’s interest. Truth – Timothy reminds us that scripture is Godbreathed and useful, so that all God’s people may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. Let’s be good stewards of it. So, when you get that next senior discount, just remember all the gifts God has given you and ask yourself, am I managing the Master’s resources in a way that maximizes the Master’s interest?

e believe when people are equipped, motivated, and passionately engaged in living out their faith in Jesus Christ they have the potential to be world changers. Our mission is to bring people into a dynamic relationship with Jesus Christ—a relationship that empowers them to see how God can work through individual personalities, situations, and talents. Christ was an activist, he did not neglect the needs of the people as He brought His message. We strive to encourage everyone to look more like Christ by reaching outside of themselves to serve the needs of others—at home, at school, in communities, and across the world.
Christian Magazine
Writer Guidelines: Who: Our writers range from pastors,
professors, and professional writers to stay at home moms and dads, business professionals, and others who have a desire to reach out to people through words of encouragement.
What: We believe that it is important to laugh
together, praise each other, encourage one another, and to offer biblical advice. Articles can be directed toward everyone, or from woman to woman, or man to man. We love to share recipes and family traditions as well. We ask that articles be kept to a 500 word maximum. We’d love to hear from you!
Where: Please send submissions to articles.goodnews@gmail.com Why: Because God has not intended for us to
just survive. We believe that we are intended to reach out to love and encourage each other. God has brought each of us through tough times, blessed us, and made the “impossible” possible. Let’s, together, share the love of Jesus Christ.
