ith her infectious smile and her ready laughter, she just had that gift to impact the whole room. When she arrived, the party started! She was so glad to see you, and thrilled that you were there! “We’re going to have a great time tonight!” she said. How did she do it? Moments ago it was hum drum, but her attitude transformed the whole room in a matter of just a few minutes! It was a gift, or was it? There were plenty of things to complain about. There was never enough time or money to go around. The truth was that people really didn’t want to hear about
us into a nose dive. If something doesn’t happen quickly, we are going to crash! You here that voice, saying, “Pull up, Pull up!” How do you do that, when you can’t even find the controls? Three times in Colossians 3:15-17, Paul points us to a vital control. Paul writes, “And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him” (NKJV). After reminding us to allow God’s peace to rule in our hearts, he gives us this simple command, “Be thankful!” Worship will flow out of a grateful heart and we will sing with “grace in your hearts to the Lord.” This trilogy concludes with the reminder that in everything we should be “giving thanks to God the Father” in Jesus’s name! Simply put, gratitude serves as a powerful control for our attitude.
It’s interesting that in flying, “attitude” is vitally important, too. The pilot knows from his instruments even when visibility is horrible and he is flying blind, whether the plane has a “nose-up” or a “nose-down” attitude. The plane’s attitude is easily corrected by simply pulling or pushing on the controls. There are times when we wish we could correct our own attitude as easily, especially when difficult circumstances throw

those things. They had enough problems of their own. What they wanted, and really needed, was someone who could help them rise above the cloudy hum drum and soar in the bright skies above!
Is it a gift? Yes, but it is a gift of God’s grace, and it is available to all. We won’t all be the life of the party, but we will discover that gratitude is powerful. When thanksgiving flows from our hearts, we will impact the lives of everyone around us. We simply ask God for His awesome grace, and His grace empowers us to be intentionally thankful. Today, let’s get our “nose-up” attitude on, by giving thanks to God. Be ready for the awesome impact of your grateful heart!

s Americans, we celebrate Thanksgiving the fourth Thursday in November. Most people enjoy traditions on this special day, ones that have been passed down through the generations. A family might tune in to the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade or hit the stores to beat the crowds. Some people might meet up with friends or family members they haven’t seen in a while. Others watch football, or pop in a movie. One of my favorites is “A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving.” The Pilgrims and the Wampanoag Indians first celebrated Thanksgiving in 1621, and it lasted three
the meal, everyone hurries off. Some take naps, watch television, shop, check their phones or computers, and never to stop to think about how blessed we are to live in America, or the benefits of spending time with family or friends. Imagine if we practiced Thanksgiving every day and faithfully give thanks for each bountiful blessings God provides for us and our country. Remember also to thank God for the relationships we have. If we encounter someone that is homeless, lonely, or hungry, ask God to bless them and thank him for prayers that he answers. One Thanksgiving, sitting at the dinner table, my stomach growled with hunger pains. I didn’t wait for my parents to sit down; instead, I grabbed the mashed potatoes, put a pile on my plate, and dug in. Dad frowned as he pulled up his chair. My mom walked over and gently asked, “Did you thank God for that big spoonful of potatoes?” I haven’t forgotten that lesson. It’s best to thank God before than after the blessing.
Today, we might think the perfect Thanksgiving celebration would be to have all our favorite foods at once. Everyone sits down in anticipation, gives a quick blessing then someone shouts, “Let’s eat.” After

days. Families and friends, old and new, sat around and enjoyed each other’s company. They didn’t rush through the meal. They lingered, talked to each other, and gave thanks to God for the harvest season. As time marched on, the Thanksgiving holiday was used to teach the younger generation about American freedom and how to be a good neighbor.
In the twenty first century, it’s easy with our busy lives, children included, to forget to be thankful. Scripture tells us to “Enter his gates with thanksgiving; go into his courts with praise. Give thanks to him and praise his name” (Psalms 100:4). Memorizing this verse might help us be more aware of the blessings and benefits we have as American citizens.

The father, even when it was heartbreaking, even through all the prayers and sleepless nights, had to sit back and let his son go down the wide and broad path of a backslider. Many people overlook the faith of the father. When his son finally came home, the father was waiting on him with a robe, a ring, and shoes. Brother Burman Cape used to say, “He robed him, ringed Him, and reeboked Him”. The father had also been feeding a calf in the stall the entire time the son was gone. Italian Lentil Stew alatians 5:24 says, “Those who belong to Christ Jesus have nailed the passions and desires of their sinful nature to his cross and crucified them there” (NLT). There is a lot of talk lately about self-love in regards to taking care of oneself, getting exercise, and eating better. But if taking care of oneself was an act of self-love it wouldn’t be so difficult to put down the brownie and pick up a raw carrot would it? Making the right eating and exercise decisions has more to do with crucifying the flesh than self-love. But as it was said in 1 Corinthians 6:19, “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own.” Since we are built for communion with God, it’s imperative that we do the right things to honor this temple he has given us. In the past few years I decided to try a more plantbased diet and eat less sugar. If anyone has tried to give up sugar and meat its not easy at first. The flesh fights hard. However, after a while I didn’t crave it anymore, got sick less, and had more energy. Most of the time my husband doesn’t even realize he didn’t eat meat. This recipe for Italian Lentil Stew is one of those meals and with the leftovers I use it as a filling to make enchiladas for an extra easy meal. Just add your favorite enchilada sauce and some cheese on top and bake until its bubbly.
16 // November 2018
Italian Lentil Stew 16 oz bag of dried black lentils (2) 32 oz containers of Vegetable stock 1 tbsp ground fennel seed (or fennel powder) 3 tbsp organic soy sauce 1 tbsp Italian seasoning 1 28 oz can of organic crushed tomatoes 1 onion chopped 2 carrots chopped 3 cloves chopped garlic 2 tbsp olive oil.
In a Dutch oven or large pot over medium high heat add olive oil, onion, and the carrots. Sauté until onions begin to get translucent and then add the garlic. Add the fennel seed and Italian Seasoning and stir until you start to smell them. Cook a few more minutes and then add the dried lentils. Coat the lentils and cook for a couple of minutes before adding the vegetable stock, crushed tomatoes, and soy sauce. Stir and bring to a boil and then reduce to a simmer. (If you have a slow cooker this is a great time to transfer the stew and cook on low for 6 hours if you have things to do! ) On the stove cook on low (uncovered) for about 5-6 hours until it’s thick. Serve with grated parmesan or your favorite cheese and some crusty bread.

Skill Power If achieving health begins with the will, or desire, to be healthy—it only begins there. It takes skill to pave the way. For example, a willpower based approach to losing weight might mean watching your portions, going hungry, and trying to tough it out—but a truly healthy person will use a skill power based approach by upgrading the quality of foods chosen so they can eat the same (or an even greater) quantity of food while still losing weight. If necessary, skill will also enable you to rehabilitate your taste buds, so you learn to prefer, and love, the foods that love you back.

Helping others never gets old and I am blessed to be a member of the Food Bank team.” In times of disaster, the Food Bank also answers the call for those who lose access to food, often with no warning or time to prepare. that same mistake from happening again, we are forgiven. Second, if we wish go deeper into our personal human relationships we will eventually do or say (or fail to do or say) something that causes another person to be hurt. Sometimes it’s unintentional, and sometimes it’s intentional, but in both cases the pain inflicted is real. If we wish to repair the damage done, we must apologize. Ephesians 4:32 says, “Be kind to each other, sympathetic, forgiving each other as God has forgiven you through Christ.” We must reflect on how we allowed ourselves to hurt someone we cared about, we must sit down with that person and say, “I’m sorry. I was wrong. I made a mistake. It was my fault.” If we are lucky, they will forgive us, but they are not God. Human forgiveness does not always come quickly, or completely. Pain and hurt linger in people and we must allow for that process to work itself out.
Third, just like any other example we set, if people witness us acknowledging our mistakes, accepting responsibility for them, expressing sincere regret, and asking for forgiveness, and then trying to right the wrong, we are a witness for God and Christian discipleship. Conversely, if we cause harm and show no remorse, or intention of reconciling the wrong, we are a witness to that which is contrary to how God desires us to interact with each other. Someone who witnesses us acting in this manner may decide there is no difference between how Christians act, and how unbelievers act. This could cause them to turn away from God and resist entering or maintaining a relationship with Him. Matthew 18:6 says, “If anyone causes one of these little ones--those who believe in me--to stumble, it would be better for them to have a large millstone hung around their neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea.” I’m sorry. I was wrong. I made a mistake. It was my fault. These words won’t kill you, in fact, they just might save you.

’m sorry. I was wrong. I made a mistake. It was my fault. I dare you to say them out loud. For many reasons these phrases seem to be most difficult for people to say, and for many reasons they should be spoken genuinely when necessary. So let’s start with why we should apologize. First, as Christians, it is required of us that we admit we make mistakes; we sin by failing to act and/or acting in the wrong manner, we do not always follow the example of Christ, and we do not deserve the grace and mercy God shows us. Because, “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23) and because we are part of “all”, we must say, “God, I’m sorry, I was wrong, I made a mistake.” The good news is that if we are sincere, if our admission is also a commitment to work to keep

and more.
What you will discover, however, is that life enrichment programs can vary greatly from one community to another. Some communities offer a wide variety of activities and wellness programs, while others offer only those required by state regulations.
As you are visiting and touring senior living communities on a loved one’s behalf, here are a few tips to help you evaluate the strength of their life enrichment programs: • Review the calendar: Ask to see copies of the community’s most recent activity calendars. Try to get calendars for at least two or three months so you can get a true picture of how many and what types of activities are offered. • Assess the activities: Does the calendar show a broad range of activities? Ideally, you will find programs and events that engage the body, mind, and spirit. Also compare the scheduled activities with your family member’s hobbies and interests. Are there things they enjoy? Or things they’ve always wanted to try? If a hobby or interest of your loved one isn’t
So, how important are life enrichment and wellness programs? Do they make a difference in how happy, healthy, and engaged a resident is? Much has been written recently about the dangers of a sedentary life, especially for seniors. It puts people at higher risk for everything, from falls to depression and obesity. Some health professionals go as far as saying a sedentary lifestyle is just as dangerous as smoking. It’s important to find a senior living community committed to a wide variety of life enrichment programs because: • It protects cognitive health: A 2010 study published in the New England Journal of Medicine highlighted how important staying socially active is for cognitive health. Participating in activities that challenge and
listed, is it possible to have it added to the schedule? • After hours and weekends: Also look at what happens during the evening hours and on weekends. Are events and activities scheduled then? You want to make sure there are meaningful activities scheduled seven days a week, not just during traditional business hours. • After you review the current activities calendar at any community you are seriously considering, choose a few programs that seem appealing to your family member. Ask the staff if you and your loved one can participate in one or two. It can provide you with good insight about what community life would be like and give you a chance to meet residents.

So with help of the LSG adoptions team, Kimberly began the hard work of getting approved. Typically, prospective parents spread out the mounds of paperwork over several months, but in order to fast track their approval the Codys had to finish it in one sitting. Kaiden moved to their home just two months later, and the adoption was finalized later that year. In such a short time, the Codys and all of the staff at school have noticed a big change in Kaiden. Laura Fowler, adoption recruiter, LSG, says, “Kaiden was always so still and quiet. Like he’d been told that children should be seen not heard.” Now he’s a typical fun loving, often noisy, first grader. While Matt was cautious about getting too attached at first, once Kaiden moved into their home he was all in. recognizable from a car accident. He was hit by a drunk driver on an Alaskan highway. To top off the list of her personal afflictions, she later learned her son, Larry, had chosen a different type of lifestyle. This incredible woman I am referring to is none other than Barbara Johnson and she unpacks all the details in her classic best-seller Stick a Geranium In Your Hat and Be Happy. In it she writes: “I saw that God still had some trials in mind to help me grow and mature. Growing is a lifetime job, and we grow when we’re down in the valleys, where the fertilizer is. When I was talking with a friend, she got a telephone call bringing some disturbing news. Instead of panic, her response was, “Well, here we grow again!” She was right. We can go through painful trials or we can grow through them.” I love gardening except for pulling up weeds and dealing with plants or flowers that refuse to grow. Take our five Hydrangeas. Four have bloomed this year, but one still stubbornly has not. I put down fertilizer. I watered it regularly. I sprinkled some Miracle Grow. Nothing. It has healthy green leaves but no blooms. I cannot even call it a Blooming Idiot! We are like plants. Sometimes we bloom and reflect our Creator’s blessings back to Him and to others and sometimes we just veg out. You can grow with God or you can wither away. Consider the man who had a right withered or deformed hand found in Luke’s selftitled book in the 6th chapter (vs. 6 and 10, N.L.T). He did not have to stick his hand out like Jesus told him to, but he did it in faith. Whatever has withered up or dried up in your life, hold out your hand and give it to God. Then wait and see what will grow again.

ho do you really respect? If you had to choose between two types of people, would you respect someone who had just won the mother-load lottery, or an elderly person with a truckload of wisdom? Folks who have really lived life for a long time are the most interesting to talk with. Yes, they may have some personal (and even physical) scars from the curvy paths their lives have taken, but they still have that wisdom thing going on. What would you say to someone who experienced not one, not two, not three, but four personal tragedies in a span of nine years? The person I am thinking of found her husband in the middle of a road after a severe car accident followed by three other catastrophes involving three of her four sons. After her husband’s recovery from temporary blindness, brain damage, and seizures, this woman learned later on that her son Steve was killed in Vietnam. If that was not enough, soon after, she was asked to come identify her son, Tim, at a morgue, as he was not

McKinney graduated from Belhaven in 1967 with a Bachelor of Arts in Art and Business with a minor in Greek and Bible. As a scholarship athlete, he earned letters in basketball and tennis. He was involved in student government serving as president of his sophomore class and on the President's Student Council. His activities included the Concert Choir, cartoonist for the Clan Call Newspaper, sports editor of the yearbook, and president of the Varsity B Club. McKinney was voted Mr. Belhaven by the student body his senior year.
In 1997, Ron received the Belhaven Community Award for service to his community. During the time of his daughter Heidi's cancer treatment, he was involved with raising funds for the St. Jude Children's Hospital, Miracle Network Television telethon, TC Thompson Children's Hospital, and TVA CFC. The 2007 Belhaven University Alumnus of the Year was presented to Ron McKinney for his achievements in the community. He organized and directed the Make-AWish All-Star basketball games, comprised of local High School players, to raise over a hundred thousand dollars for families with children who had catastrophic diseases.

Former head basketball of Belhaven, Coach Charles R. Rugg said, "I remember Ronnie McKinney as a feisty, fireball point guard who could handle the basketball and drill the jump shot. His dribbling skills were such that we rarely had trouble against the press. When opponents would sag on our inside guys, Ronnie would pull them out again by hitting a shot from the outside. He was aggressive, hustling, competitive player who controlled the tempo of the game and was a great passer. Overcoming Anger
othing can cause problems for you and others like a bad temper. The Bible has much to say about the dangers of anger. For instance, “Make no friendship with an angry man; and with a furious man thou shalt not go: Lest thou learn his ways, and get a snare to thy soul” (Proverbs 22:24, 25). God’s Word also has good things to say about those who are slow to become angry. “He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city” (Proverbs 16:32). Often, arguments escalate into fighting and violence because the other person does not really understand what we are trying to say, and we do not fully understand what they are trying to say to us. Because of our different personalities and methods of expression, there is a natural distortion of understanding when we talk to one another. This leads to misunderstandings and angry arguments. Given what the Bible says about anger, how can we learn to control our tempers? How can we overcome communication problems? God’s Word has the answer: “Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath: For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God” (James 1:19, 20). 1. “Be Swift to HEAR.” Listen to what the other person has to say. Try to put yourself in their situation and realize that what you hear may not be what they are really trying to tell you. 2. Be “Slow to SPEAK.” Don’t talk. Listen first, and then be careful about what you say and how you respond. Instead of arguing your point, try to repeat to them what you think they have said. Ask them, “Is this what you meant?” This leads to conversation and clarification.

3. Be “Slow to WRATH.” Be slow to exhibit your temper. Never let a person cause you to lose your temper. To do this is to let them control you! Instead, you may need to walk away to cool down. Never follow someone who is trying to walk away from you. They need time to cool down and this will only escalate the argument. 4. “The wrath of man does not work the righteousness of God.” The worst thing about violent anger is that our wrath dishonors God. Jesus Christ wants to bring peace
to your life. He wants to bring peace to your friendships and relationships. Anger turned out is violence. Anger turned in is bitterness. Rather than keeping anger bottled up inside or letting it out in a violent tirade, we can be used of God to bring peace to a situation through following the simple formula of James 1:19, 20. Remember: “The best way to win an argument is to avoid one!”

Joint Replacement Surgery
C
hronic joint pain can be debilitating. But the good news is that you don’t have to live with the pain. There are options, both surgical and nonsurgical, that you can discuss with your doctor.
weight-loss plan, contact your doctor, personal trainer, and/or nutritionist. Physical Therapy
• Osteoarthritis (Degenerative Joint Disease)
Physical therapy is often an excellent way to relieve joint pain. Licensed physical therapists are trained to develop customized plans of care that are tailored to each patient’s specific condition.
• Rheumatoid Arthritis
Medication
• Post-traumatic Arthritis
Over-the-counter medications like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can often help to relieve joint pain. If these are not effective, your doctor may prescribe a muscle relaxer or prescription-strength pain reliever. Your doctor may also suggest that you consider a steroid injection. This is a common, yet often temporary treatment for arthritis, joint disease, and tendinitis.
Several different conditions can lead to joint pain. These conditions include:
• Rotator Cuff Tear Arthropathy • Avascular Necrosis (Osteonecrosis) • Severe Fractures
Joint Replacement If your everyday activities are being limited due to stiffness and pain and there is little relief from other treatments, your physician may recommend joint replacement surgery. Most people who have knee, hip, or shoulder replacement surgery experience a substantial reduction in the amount of pain they are having daily and are able to return to the activities they enjoy.
Exercise Exercise can play a positive role in eliminating joint pain. This is especially true for those who suffer from arthritis. Exercise can help to increase your body’s strength and flexibility. This in turn can reduce joint pain and fatigue. Keeping your muscles strong is important because they support your bones and joints. Talk to your doctor before you begin a new exercise plan. It is important to know which exercises are best for you and your joint condition. Low-impact exercises, including bicycling, water aerobics, and yoga, are often excellent choices. Weight Loss Another way to reduce joint pain is by losing weight. Excess weight can cause unneeded wear and tear on joints. If you need help creating or maintaining a

“Joint replacement is a very effective way to reduce and very often completely eliminate joint pain,” says orthopedic surgeon, Mitch Frix, MD. “Joint replacement surgery has changed significantly over the years. Joint replacement designs have improved in function and longevity to benefit patients’ active lifestyles for a longer period of time.” Joint replacement surgery can often even be done on an outpatient basis. Advancements in joint replacement and surgical care services now allow for joint replacement patients to receive their surgery and return home in less than 24-hours! Most importantly, when considering joint replacement surgery, be sure to choose a hospital that is certified by The Joint Commission in hip, knee, and shoulder replacement. This means that the hospital has consistently demonstrated compliance with The Joint Commission’s national state-of-the-art standards for health care quality and safety in disease-specific care.

A Palm Tree Kind of Faith
“The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree: he shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon” (Psalm 92:12). by Carrie Rigdon

surely crumbled under the weight of everything that was blowing my way. Thank God, that was not the end result. My roots in Christ gave me a solid foundation to stand on when it seemed like everything around me was being tossed to and fro. In the span of four months, my family experienced three unexpected medical emergencies with three different family members. The
result of those series of storms left us at two funerals, one of which was my father’s. I needed my rooted faith in Jesus more than ever during that time. Those storms in my life made me weary but my roots dug deep into my relationship with Christ and in my weakness He made me strong. Just like the palm tree, I bent a lot but I didn’t break. So many people in our community are hurting and are faced with overwhelming storm-like circumstances; it might even be you. But, let your roots run deep in Christ. The storms in our life will come, but God has given us His Word that He will be with us in the storm. We may bend, but we won’t break. About The Author
T
he images displayed on the TV screen were hard to take in. The storm seemed to have left nothing intact. Debris and damage now replaced what was a lively city just moments before Hurricane Michael blew in the Florida Coast on October 10, 2018. The wind and the storm surge were unprecedented according to the news media. I saw the images and the devastation left in the storm’s wake. Something stood out to me: palm trees were still standing. I’ve often wondered how such a flimsy looking tree can withstand 100+ miles per hour winds, intense amounts of rain and the roar of the angry ocean overtaking land. It doesn’t look very strong like a mighty oak tree with its expansive branches. It doesn’t give off a sense of awe and wonder like the redwoods in California. It’s just a simple, thin tree that we often get excited to see if we are heading to the beach for vacation because it means our tropical destination is near. But, if you watch a palm tree in an intense tropical storm or hurricane, you will notice something. It bends and sways back and forth relentlessly but it rarely breaks. Unlike most trees, the roots of a palm tree do well in dry and wet soil. Most root systems would be affected negatively by wetter soil and topple over once the wind intensified but the palm tree’s roots attach to the ground better and stronger. It uses the storm to its advantage so to speak. The palm tree is referenced several times in the Bible and it’s easy to understand why. Life is going to bring challenges and setbacks to everyone. The difference in the outcome of the storm is your root system. Are you firmly rooted in Christ or are your roots more like that of a pine tree? The first storm that comes along will knock you down if your roots don’t run deep. In my own life not too long ago, I relied heavily on the “root system” of my faith. It seemed like storm after storm was hitting. Left to my own devices, I would have
