When difficulties reveal themselves in our experience, how do we respond? While none of us is promised tomorrow, rarely do we prepare breakfast with a genuine expectation of death before lunch. Even so, our challenges are not insignificant. When we fear physical harm, are we conscious of the angelic host around us? When our children are sick or hungry, do we feel the presence of Him who is our Provision? When we lose a relationship, to either death or estrangement, do we see hope in the glorious beams from Calvary’s cross?

Count Your Blessings s I sit in an ER room on Mother’s Day miles away from my kids, running on three hours of sleep in two days, I am blessed. As we are still waiting for my father to get moved to a room after getting bitten by a copperhead, I am blessed. As the swelling keeps coming and going and the fear of my father’s losing his hand creeps in, I am blessed. I am blessed. Why? Because I choose it. See, this blessing wouldn’t have been seen or chosen to be seen a few years back. This blessing for me would have been a pure moment of freakout with fear, anxiety, and all sorts of emotions. This would have been a “how can I control this situation” or “what can I do to fix it” type of moment. A few years ago, Mindfulness was some kind of weird practice where I believed you had to sit cross-legged and say “ohmmmmmm” for hours. A few years ago, I would have never connected breathing, awareness, or gratitude to mindfulness. A few years ago, I wouldn’t have had these realizations in this event: • I am blessed I actually get to help my mother, a woman who never asks for anything but gives everything, on Mother’s Day. • I am blessed I get to watch and help one of the greatest men I know. • I am blessed we get to belly laugh to comedies to pass time while my mother continually shushes us for being too loud as we silently nod with tears of laughter rolling down our faces. • I am blessed I have a husband who takes care of the kids so I can come up here.
8 // May 2020
• I am blessed that I am in the position to work for myself so I can spend days with my father as he recovers. • I am blessed. As I teach many people in my training, when they see unforeseen (or sometimes seen) events that cause stress, finding the blessings in that moment will reduce the cortisol, a.k.a. stress, in the body. I talk about how this resilient exercise takes practice. Just like physical muscles, our brains have “mental muscles” that need working on. But I think today I realized one thing I have missed out on telling people: speaking your blessings removes the control from your hands. See, I don’t have to fix a blessing; I accept it. I don’t see anything negative in this situation; I see a life playing out with a purpose. I see a pause in time that allows me to reflect. I see Daddy-daughter time. I see an amazing husband and a true Mother’s Day gift to my mom. I see so much more than fear and anxiety. So next time you are stuck in life or traffic, have to deal with drama or office politics, or receive harsh news or an emergency call, speak your blessings about that moment. Release and control the controllable: your attitude and outlook. And you never know: that dreaded moment might just be the blessing you needed. Being a Good Steward MONEY MATTERS
WITH DR. ANDREW LEE Dr. Andrew Lee is professor of English at Lee University. He also serves as a coordinator for Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University. He and his wife Esmerelda have three children.
O
n March 18th, just as most of us were starting to “shelter in place” with the coronavirus spreading, I tuned in to the Dave Ramsey radio show. It happened to be during the “Millionaire Theme Hour,” when Dave talks to actual millionaires whose net worth was over one million dollars. One particular story I heard during this episode was unforgettable. Here’s how it started: a forty-seven-year-old man called into the show. What’s his net worth? $12.7 million dollars. How did he acquire this money? In a highly unusual and tragic way. One of his older sisters had died in a horrible house fire, and with the settlement from the subsequent lawsuit, he had received $1 million dollars at age fifteen. His mother and other older sisters put the million dollars into a “Trust” with attorneys and financial advisors managing the money for him. He wouldn’t be able to access the million dollars until he turned twenty-five. During those ten years, from age fifteen until age twenty-five, he received only $200 as a monthly allowance. He turned twenty-five in 1998, and by that time, his $1 million dollars was worth $3 million. How did this happen? The short answer is this: it happened as a result of the love and thoughtful concern of his mother and other sisters who were wise enough to (1) put the money into a Trust so he couldn’t access it until age twenty-five and (2) hire skilled and conscientious attorneys and financial advisors to manage the money for them. During the ten years waiting period between fifteen to twenty-five years old, the trustees invested the money into stock mutual funds, and from time to time they purchased shares in new and growing companies such as Microsoft, Amazon,

and Google. The young man’s friends, being normal teens, encouraged him to go on a spending spree for his twentyfifth birthday. “Buy an Italian sports car!” they said. “Buy a boat! Buy a mansion!” But, as he described on air during this live radio show, he felt too guilty since the money was a result of his sister’s horrific death in the fire. So, he didn’t spend any of it, but instead kept it invested. One of his older sisters noticed his anguish and encouraged him to donate that first $1 million dollars to a worthy cause, so he did just that. At age twenty-five, he immediately donated one million dollars to a critical care burn unit at a local hospital in honor of his dead sister. And the remaining $2 million dollars kept growing and growing. Since that first million-dollar donation which was twenty-two years ago, this man has spent nothing else from the money he received in the settlement. But he has continued to make generous donations from that money to hospital burn units across the country, and today the money has grown to nearly $13 million dollars. Today, at age 47, this man makes a fine living earning $170, 000 as a senior-level information technology specialist, and he intends to donate most of his trust money that he received from his sister’s tragic death. He ended his call by breaking down into tears and reminding listeners not to take life for granted and to cherish every moment with loved ones because we have no idea if today may be our last here on earth. Because his family was wise enough to plan ahead, this man will do immeasurable good for countless others with the wealth he was blessed with--a good steward of the Lord. “To whom much is given, much will be required” (Luke 12:48b).

What kind of heart do you find yourself serving with? Do you do it with a happy and eager attitude or with a sense of obligation? Let’s look at scripture from the 13th chapter of John where Jesus gives us the perfect example of what a servant’s heart looks like. The setting is Jesus and his disciples at the last supper. Their meal ends and Jesus takes a towel and wraps it around his waist and washes the feet of all his disciples. John 13:6 -17, “He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?” Jesus replied, “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.” “No,” said Peter, “you shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with me.” “Then, Lord,” Simon

These new regulations, along with consumers reporting various physical and mental benefits, have created a market flooded with new CBD companies, stores, and products even being sold in smoke shops and convenience stores. This market explosion raises legitimate questions. Are all CBD products the same? Are they safe? Which ones can I trust? If you’re curious about CBD, I’ll briefly touch on a few basic facts to help get you started in the right direction. There are 3 major groups of CBD products. “Full-spectrum” (or whole-plant) products contain CBD along with terpenes and other cannabinoids. This group has an advantage known as the “entourage effect,” simply meaning the cannabinoids and terpenes work synergistically for maximum results. Full-spectrum products have a very low (less than 0.3%) THC content with no “intoxicating” effects whatsoever. Still,

Gò0dNews for Couples
The Marriage Knot n our American culture, the words “tie the knot” are used in discussion concerning a couple planning for a beautiful marriage ceremony. To “tie the knot” is referencing biblical terms of “They two shall become as one.” With this thought in mind, can we associate each individual planning to marry to a piece of rope? If so, then two pieces of rope shall be used to tie the knot. The two pieces of rope are swirled around in a form, and thus an overhand knot is formed, holding them tightly together. Whatever is attached to the opposite ends of the two ropes is connected at the knot and cannot be separated from each other unless the knot is undone. How soon does the first test of life together challenge the integrity of their marriage knot? How much time was invested in preparation toward tying their marriage knot? Isn’t it God’s intention that the knot never be undone or pulled apart? Isn’t it Satan’s intention to destroy or pull apart every marriage knot ever tied? Who’s responsible for keeping the integrity of the marriage knot safe? Hum? Oh my, how life really can test the integrity of a marriage knot. Through time, you can count on its integrity being tested, time after time after time. As life’s tests come along, it’s the responsibility of both individuals connected by the knot to set boundaries and to protect their marriage knot. Could it be what God hath knotted together, let no man or woman pry apart? Pry? Hum? Be sure of this: that Satan has his tools handy and ready to pry every marriage knot apart if he is given the opportunity. So what are the tools that Satan keeps so handy in his toolbox? Could they be differences concerning finances, in-laws, religion, children, and irresponsibility in keeping the courtship
32 // May 2020
healthy? How many marriage knots have been undone with these tools? Is he working on yours? Throughout tests of time, your marriage knot will either come apart or cinch tighter and tighter together, becoming undoable. There’s not a marriage that is exempt from life’s testing. Your knot will be tested. The choices that both individuals make concerning their marriage will become the undoing or the tightening of their marriage knot. No one else can make the choices for you. You only can choose the destiny of the integrity of your marriage knot. Rise up; protect and cherish your marriage knot. If it was worth all of the preparation you invested into tying it together, then it is certainly worth the proper protection it deserves. What is the condition of your marriage knot? If it’s not apart yet, there’s hope in the restoration of its integrity. God’s love is awesome in the restoration of marriages. It’s Satan’s business and desire to tear apart your marriage knot. We have the authority to either allow him the opportunity to destroy it or to stop him. I see an elderly couple walking down a beautifully landscaped pathway, hand in hand, toward the end of their lives. Their hair is now grey, and their steps are slow. Their marriage knot withstood the test of time. They protected it well. How beautiful. What will your marriage knot testimony be as you approach your elder years? Will you age gracefully? Will you be the next couple to be seen walking down the beautiful pathway during your elder years? Blessings as you consider these thoughts. Protect your marriage knot.

Everyone has setbacks, but does everyone experience comebacks? Unfortunately, the answer is no, no they don’t. I know from my own personal life that not every setback has produced a comeback. The truth is some setbacks can’t be reversed; the good news is they can still be beneficial. What is it about a person or situation that inspires a comeback? One of my favorite examples of this in the Bible is Queen Esther. In a nutshell, we know that she was raised by her cousin, Mordecai, because her father and mother had died. In an amazing turn of events, she later becomes queen. After becoming queen, an evil man, Haman, plots to have the Jews killed (she has hidden her identity as a Jew up until this point). Esther literally risks her life to save her people. In Esther 4:16, she says in response to Mordecai, “Go, gather together all the Jews who are in Susa, and fast

Gò0dNews for Mothers
A Mother’s Call To Arms od bless the children, and God bless the mothers who raise them! There is no mold for a mother. They come with varying packaging and functionality. Some are ranked high as a humanitarian, a sergeant, a cultivator, and a pushover, for example, but all are given the gift of bringing forth life. For some, motherhood comes easy, but for others, it is a constant test and trial. Mothers are constantly evolving and facing challenges. There’s an old saying that mothers wear many different hats depending on the current need of the child or family. They are versatile, super flexible, and sometimes ventriloquists. They have some of the funniest sayings, like, “I’m cold; go put your coat on.” What are some of the funny things your mother said or did that bring a smile to your face? Mothers definitely help create colorful memories of childhood. Those childhood pictures with the embarrassing stories. The Easter outfits! The haircuts! Ah, but you have to love the joy that the stories bring and the laughter that ensues with each shared tale: the bond that is kindled each time you reminisce. And when you spend time together, you begin to see things you hadn’t noticed before, like the laugh lines on her face, or the reassurance that you’ve been missed and that you are always loved. For her, the memory of the first time your tiny hand wrapped around her finger was the moment she felt her heart beating in her own chest. She pledged her life to this small being: you, a tiny baby, her world. Psalm 139:13: “You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb.” God’s Word says that He knew you before you were created. He had already given you a soul and a purpose and called you His own. You have a mother who chose to give you life and a God who chose to create you! You have a purpose, and your mother is your biggest fan!
40 // May 2020
Mothers have an insane way of knowing you and when you’re up to something. Haven’t you ever wondered how they knew? I mean, they do have eyes in the backs of their heads, right? Even so, mothers are having to get more creative nowadays, just to catch a minute of family time. What with social media and all the electronic devices, it’s almost requiring battle strategies!
Ephesians 6:10-18 tells us to put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil. This is a call to arms for all mothers. Don’t stand idle, allowing things of this world to falsely lead our children astray. We have the ultimate power in Christ Jesus, who can do all things. What a blessing: a mother who trains her child to worship and follow Jesus Christ! That’s every mother’s prayer: that her child walks in the ways of Christ and knows love as Christ loved the Church. Even in His final hour on the cross, He had concern for His mother. A mother has a special calling, and she is a blessing beyond measure! Celebrate your mother. Happy Mother’s Day!

Ingredients • 4 - 5oz. thick pieces of skinless white firm fish fillet (I use grouper) • 1 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil • 1 Tbsp butter • 1 cup red bell pepper, chopped • 2 cloves garlic, minced • 9 oz. fresh baby spinach • 2 oz. reduced fat cream cheese • ¼ cup half-and-half cream • 3 Tbsp grated parmesan cheese
• In a large skillet, over medium heat, add ½ Tbsp olive oil and ½ Tbsp butter, red bell pepper, and garlic and cook for 4 minutes. • Add spinach, season with salt and pepper; cook until the spinach wilts down. • Add cream cheese, half-and-half, and parmesan cheese; mix well until cream cheese is melted and resembles creamed spinach. • Heat a separate skillet on medium high heat; add remaining oil and butter. • Season fish on both sides with salt and pepper and place on the hot pan. • Cook 6 minutes on first side, flip fish over, and cook on the other side an additional 5 minutes until cooked thru and browned. • Divide the spinach mixture on the bottom of each plate and top with a piece of fish.
• Salt and pepper, to taste

Hamilton Medical Center is an Advanced Primary Stroke Center. Not all area hospitals have this distinction. In addition, Hamilton has earned the Gold Seal of Approval from the Joint Commission for healthcare quality. When experiencing the symptoms of a stroke, every second counts. So does getting the right level of care as quickly as possible. Hamilton Medical Center has a nationally ranked, highly trained Rapid Stroke Team on staff, ready to care for you 24/7. An ischemic stroke can occur when a blood vessel that feeds oxygen and blood to the brain is blocked by a clot. According to the American Stroke Association, 87% of strokes are ischemic. A stroke can also occur when a blood vessel ruptures, spilling blood into the surrounding brain. This is called a hemorrhagic stroke. About 13% of all strokes are hemorrhagic. A stroke starves the brain of the nutrients it needs. If a stroke interrupts blood flow to a particular part of the brain that controls a body function, that part of the body won’t work normally. That’s why stroke is a leading cause of disability in the U.S. Quick medical treatment is crucial to minimize the long-term effects of stroke and to reduce the risk of death.

Gò0dNews for Everyone
Mother, May I? o you remember the old game from childhood called “Mother, May I”? If not, it’s a game where everyone stands at a certain start line except “mother,” and one at a time, you ask if you can take a specific action to move forward (take three steps or two hops or five baby steps, for example), and “mother” would reply with a yes or a no. I was thinking today that sometimes we treat God’s instructions a little bit like that game. We may read the Bible as a list of mere suggestions for living, and we try to skirt around or disregard those “suggestions” we don’t like. We sometimes even try to reason with God, asking Him to look the other way when we do the things we know we shouldn’t. At best, it’s a poor attempt to try to love God AND the things of the world. At worst, it’s an abuse of the grace that was so costly to our Savior who died in our place. So how should we look at the things that Scripture calls sin? How should we live our everyday lives in the face of such knowledge? I think the answer is in understanding that the reason Scripture tells us to avoid certain things is for our own good! God isn’t a cosmic investigator putting out red tape everywhere, trying to set obstacles and watch us jump hurdles for entertainment. He’s more like a loving parent who sets rules and boundaries in the best interests of the child they love and want to protect! There is such a misunderstanding sometimes that living God’s ways, according to Scripture, is taking a path of deprivation, suffering, and self-denial. The truth is that God’s path leads
50 // May 2020
to joy and peace! There is great reward in a life lived for God in obedience to His commands. I have friends who truly love God but are stuck in a cycle of falling into the same sins over and over again, to disastrous results. One thing these friends have in common is that they don’t see the significant role that these sins have in the causing of or contributing to the problems they keep finding themselves wrapped up in. They downplay sin as if there is no other way to live and are genuinely confused when life is full of trials and heartache. I wish that I could help them see how destructive sin is in our lives. Satan lives to use it to steal from, kill, and destroy us. He hates us, and he wants us as far away from God as he can get us. Sin is his vehicle. Be vigilant, friends! Don’t look at the wisdom of Scripture as a helpful list of “suggestions” for life with an option to live by or ignore. Don’t think of God’s precepts for living as a “May I do this? May I do that?” list of legalistic rules. Don’t make it easy for Satan to attack you and keep you going around in circles. Understand that God’s ways are always higher than our own and that we CAN avoid sin and live by the Word. Gently admonish and encourage fellow believers who are living openly in sin and struggling in life. It isn’t “kind” to let others believe a lie when you know the truth. It’s not always easy to be vigilant about acknowledging sin and its effects, but it is always the best response. Christ already did the hard part for us, the part we couldn’t do, by dying on the cross to defeat sin’s power once and for all. Because of that, we have hope that one day, sin will be completely gone forevermore. And until that day, we fight sin every day. We read the Bible, we study it, and we apply it to our lives. We share the good news with those around us—Jesus is the cure for the sin problem in the world today!
