Overcoming Anger

othing can cause problems for you and others like a bad temper. The Bible has much to say about the dangers of anger. For instance, it says, “Make no
friendship with an angry man, and with a furious man do not go, lest you learn his ways and set a snare for your soul” (Proverbs 22:24-25). God’s Word also has good things to say about those who are slow to become angry: “He who is slow to anger is better than the mighty, and he who rules his spirit than he who takes a city” (Proverbs 16:32). Given what the Bible says about anger, how can we learn to control our tempers? The Bible gives this simple formula for overcoming anger: “So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath; for the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God” (James 1:19-20). 1. Be swift to hear. Often, arguments escalate into fighting and violence because the other person does not really understand what we are trying to say and we do not understand fully what they are trying to say. Because of our different personalities and methods of expression, there is a natural distortion of understanding when we talk to one another. Listen to what the other person has to say. Try to put yourself in their situation and
2. Be slow to speak. Don’t talk. Listen first, and then be careful about what you say and how you respond. Instead of arguing your point, try to repeat to them what you think they have said. Ask them, “Is this what you meant?” This leads to conversation and clarification. 3. Be slow to wrath. Be slow to exhibit your temper. Never let a person cause you to lose your temper. To do this is to let them control you. Instead, you may need to walk away to cool down. Never follow someone who is trying to walk away from you. They need time to cool down and this will only escalate the argument. 4. The wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God. The worst thing about violent anger is that our wrath dishonors God. Jesus Christ wants to bring peace to our lives. He wants to bring peace to our friendships and relationships. Anger turned outward is violence. Anger turned inward is bitterness. Rather than keeping anger bottled up inside or letting it out in a violent tirade, we can be used by God to bring peace to a situation by following the simple formula of James 1:19-20.

Got Money— Now What? MONEY MATTERS

I
n the past few months, I’ve had several people contact me “out of the blue” to ask my opinion on what they should do with some new-found money they had recently received. These were not strangers—they were all acquaintances whom I had known for a while in various ways. Some of them had recently received a life insurance payment after the passing of a loved one. Some had received an inheritance; others had sold a property. But they all had the same question—now what should I do with this money? It’s both flattering and incredibly humbling to realize these friends have sought my opinion; after all, I’m not a financial planner or registered financial adviser, nor do I hold any licenses regarding securities or insurance sales (standard disclaimer—I don’t provide legal or professional advice nor am I licensed to do so). And it turns out that is precisely why these individuals wanted my opinion—they knew I had no hidden agenda, would never try to sell them anything, and wasn’t getting any commissions or paid endorsements to recommend a particular product. I’m just a consumer advocate who enjoys helping others, and I would never ask for money to help anyone. I’d like to briefly outline my approach to helping with this question: “What should I do with this money?” Hopefully, this can help readers if their own friends or family ask them this question. What is the purpose of this money? This is typically the first question I ask. If this money is needed to pay immediate monthly bills or buy groceries, that is a very different scenario than someone who doesn’t need the money to live on but instead wishes to invest and grow the money for a long-term goal such as retirement or kids’ college savings. If the person

doesn’t know the purpose for this new financial windfall, then I move on to the next question. How much do you have in a cash savings account for emergencies? If the answer is “nothing,” then my first suggestion is to put enough cash in a savings account or money market account or short-term CD to cover several months’ worth of expenses in case of a crisis. How much debt do you have? How important is it to you to be “debt free?” This will determine how much of the financial “windfall” money goes toward debt reduction before investing for growth. Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University teaches that one should pay off all debts besides the home mortgage before investing. What’s your risk tolerance? (See my column from last month, April 2019). You must know your personal tolerance for risk before deciding how and where to invest. If you wish to meet with a financial adviser or planner, be “as wise as serpents and harmless as a dove” as Jesus instructs us in Matthew 10:16. Preferably, seek out an adviser who must always act as a fiduciary whose recommendations are in your best financial interest. I would be very wary of any adviser or planner or broker who does any of the following: 1. Tells you to give the money to them or their firm without first asking you the questions above in order to get to know you and your financial goals and worries. 2. Immediately recommends any particular investment (annuity, stock, mutual fund, bonds, gold, real estate, etc.) without first taking the time to ask the questions above. When it comes to money, there is no “one size fits all.” Your own financial situation, as well as your financial goals, will determine what’s best for you.

Go Ahead, Make My Day by Donald Cantrell
O
ne of the most famous lines in movie history is “Go ahead, make my day,” which was something Clint Eastwood’s “Dirty Harry” said while dealing
with a criminal. However, this line can also be taken a different way. I was sitting in my place of study the other day when my granddaughter came over to me and said, “Poppy, will you play school with me?” I said, “I sure will.” At that time, she placed her hand on the back of my laptop and said, “Poppy, will you close this when we play?” I will be honest with you—that one little phrase shook me to my core as I realized that she didn’t want some of my attention: she wanted all of my attention. We live in an age of busyness, where most of us begin before the sun has risen and don’t stop until well past the setting of that same sun. It did not take me but a second to close my laptop and give her my undivided attention. We live in an age of electronics, where there are more TVs in our houses than most would admit. All of us have phones, most of us text, and we rarely even talk on our phones, and on top of all of this, we have allowed our children to have access to their own electronic devices. I am not saying that we are wrong in using these electronic advancements, but I will ask this: are you talking to your kids? We must not lose the one thing that builds character, teaches self-esteem, and molds those young boys and girls into great young men and women. What is that “one thing”? It is the precious gift of talking to our boys and girls. One thing that I have noticed in being a pastor, father, grandfather, and going to my granddaughter’s school to read and eat lunch with her is this: kids want attention, and they will get it one way or the other. Talking to our boys and girls will fix a lot of ills within the home. We need to learn the art of coming down to
play “school” or hide-and-seek with that little one that is yearning for your attention. The other day, we went to a jump park. My six-yearold granddaughter was going to teach her poppy to do a “simple flip”. I did about six flips, but none of them satisfied her, so on the seventh flip, I did it like she told me to and landed on my head. My neck is still extremely sore. Despite that, I have decided to “Go ahead and make her day” because I love her and want to make lasting memories. I want to challenge you now: go ahead and make that little boy or girl’s day, will you?

It is proclaiming that life from conception to death is precious and holds immense worth given by the Creator, God Himself. It has been said that life is God’s most precious gift. God values life so much that He sent His only Son to give His life so that we may have eternal life. Do you value life? Do you see your life as precious

Consider this study that British researchers did with undergrad college students: 40 male students were asked to look at the bodies (the faces were not revealed) of 50 women of varying shapes and sizes. In the past, it was recognized that men evaluated a woman’s attractiveness by her waist-to-hip ratio. But, these young men showed no concern for that. Time and again, the determinant of physical beauty in their eyes was a BMI of about 20, and this correlates with what is held up in the media today. What about me? All this brings us back to you—your own self-image, health, BMI, and wellbeing. If your BMI is already 19, should you try to

Very low-calorie diets are a mistake for virtually all people as a fat loss method (especially women) because they prime their fat cells for greater storage when the diet is over. any businesses are concerned with just one thing: whether or not they’re making enough money to stay open. But, for Larry Langford, the owner of Langford Appliance Parts & Service, his company is focused on something entirely different: treating his customers like family. Larry’s company has always had a family-oriented feel to it, even from the beginning. He started the business in 1979 while working for the City of Dalton Fire Department, and it was Larry’s father-in-law who first introduced him to the appliance business and helped him get started. When Larry left the fire department, he turned what began as a way to earn money on his off days into a full-time business. Langford Appliance has grown considerably in the 40 years since it first began as a one-man venture. The company now offers a wide variety of services, including plumbing repairs, water heater repairs and replacements, ceiling fan replacements, fixture repairs, bathroom repairs, and electrical work. All of this is in addition to the company’s main purpose: selling, repairing, and installing appliances. They offer appliances made by Maytag, Whirlpool, and

KitchenAid, among others, and Larry has a full team of employees ready to take care of the ranging needs of his customers. In fact, his dedicated and hard-working team members are a large part of what makes Langford Appliance so successful. Larry’s team is made up of Jack Hennessee, Paul Parker, Danny “Dano” Harrison, Sue McClure, Matt Hefner, Ricky Parsons, Roberto Sanchez, and Victor “Shorty” Cuycuz. Each one works together to make a positive impact every day. “I have a team that’s trustworthy and focused on customer satisfaction. Some of them have been here for so long, the customers know them more than they know me,” Larry said. “When they do services for people in their homes, the customers get to know me and the guys who work with me, and we wouldn’t have expanded without that. We work like a family.” The close relationship Larry and his team share with their customers is proof of their reliability. Part of this is due to the fact that Langford Appliance has occupied the same building for 30 years, which has given Larry the unique
opportunity to help people in the community while being able to watch them grow up, have children, and move through different stages of life. And, as time goes on, many of those people keep coming back. “[Family] is lifetime friendship,” said Larry. “We have customers who have been with us from the time we started. Seeing their kids coming along now, it’s just how the service business works; as long as you’ve been in it, your customers become like family.” Developing lifetime friendships is one way that Langford Appliance is different from other, larger chain stores that sell appliances, such as Home Depot or Lowes. For a business like Langford Appliance, competing against those stores, with their advertising power and visibility, should be an extremely difficult thing to do. However, Larry has seen firsthand the benefits of treating his customers well. When one of Larry’s customers has a problem—an icemaker quits working, a washer gives out mid-load, a bathroom sink starts dripping, or an oven burns out halfway through Thanksgiving dinner—one of his employees will go to that person’s house and take care of the problem themselves. Many times, the employee is someone the customer knows personally, and it’s also someone the customer can talk to without being on hold for an hour or having to wait two weeks for the problem to be fixed. “When you have a problem, [bigger stores] give you a 1-800 number to call,” Larry said. “We’ve had customers who went there, came back, and said, ‘We learned our lesson and we’re staying with you because you take care of us.’” Larry takes care of his customers because he knows who they are and what they need, and his customers appreciate it. Treating people the way they want to be treated; taking care of customers; rewarding loyalty with personal, genuine service; these are just a few of the things that make Langford Appliance so special. And, even after 40 years of business, Larry has no desire to stop anytime soon. His father-in-law plans on retiring this year after 60 years in the appliance industry—he’s 89—and Larry hopes
that he will also be able to continue to serve his customers for many years: “Hopefully me and the boys here will keep on. If we can keep the wheel rolling, we’ll thank the Lord every day we’re able to do it.” In the meantime, Larry continues to emphasize the importance of relationships. He spends time with his five grandchildren: CC, Hank, Mattie, Will, and the newest addition, Teddie Sue. He supports the two oldest grandchildren as they compete in the High School Rodeo and hopefully make it to the Nationals in Wyoming. And, every Thursday without fail, Larry and his relatives gather together for a family dinner. It’s just one more opportunity for him to put family first. Langford Appliance Parts & Service provides business for all of Whitfield County and parts of Murray, Catoosa, and Walker Counties. The store’s hours of operation are Monday–Friday, 8:30–5:30.

Asking the right questions is an important part of choosing an assisted living community. Here are six questions you’ll want to ask each assisted living community you are considering. 1. How does the community recruit, screen, and train its caregivers? Quality care is dependent upon having experienced, compassionate caregivers. Ask questions that help you determine how team members are recruited and screened. It’s also important to learn more about the community’s training program. After the initial orientation and training period, what else is done to help team members continue to learn and grow as professionals? 2. Pay attention to relationships. This tip is more of an observation than a question, but it’s an important factor in making a solid decision. As you are touring an assisted living community, pay close attention to the relationships and interactions between staff members and residents. Do residents seem happy and engaged? Do staff members know residents’ and family members’ names? Facial expressions and body language can tell a story, so it’s essential to pay attention. 3. How many caregivers are there for residents? The caregiver-to-resident ratio is an important factor in providing quality care. When an assisted living community is well staffed, caregivers have ample time to spend with each resident. Staff members are also able to detect small changes in health and intervene earlier when they aren’t rushed. 4. What happens if a resident needs more care? Sometimes a senior’s needs change after they move to an assisted living community. Make certain you ask what will happen if your loved one needs more assistance. Can they get more help at the community, or will they need to move again? Moving can be difficult at any age, but it is especially so for an older adult with declining health.

5. What does the monthly fee include? Every assisted living community prices their services differently. This can make it difficult for families to compare the cost of one assisted living community with another. Ask for a detailed list of what is included in the monthly fee. It is just as important to ask what additional expenses you should expect each month. 6. What documents will you be required to sign? Before you leave the community, ask for copies of the documents you would be required to sign should your loved one decide to live there. Then, take time to review them and make a list of follow-up questions. You’ll want to make sure you know how deposits are handled, how much notice you will need to give if your family member wants to move again, and other financial details. There was way too much focus being put towards looking like all was wonderful and that I was “a catch” and not enough focus being put on striving to reflect Christ with how I loved others.
