Our Dad Who Art In Heaven… by Joshua Bowles
I
grew up in church, born and raised in a Pentecostal home,
out of my heart from the throne of God. It wasn’t me singing

Was he sick? Should we take him to the doctor? What do we

Every day, make the most of the opportunities God gives you to inspire other people to develop positive attitudes. Isaiah 41:10 says, “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” Trusting God to guide you in any dilemma is the best way to deal with hard times. In choosing a positive attitude, you will come out of a difficult situation with renewed strength. And your life will become positive as

Daniel And Me uring those times when life wrenches from me a comfort of which I’ve become fond and harshness disrupts and confounds me, my mind fades and drifts into the wind that is my friend Daniel’s spirit. Daniel was our black caddy master at the country club. Unable to read or write, Daniel didn’t need intellect to bridge our two worlds: only his gentle, sweet spirit. Daniel loved me before I knew the meaning of that word or owned the courage to say it. Years and ambition finally separated us, and maybe by now, death. But his presence in me remains anchored. Daniel gave himself without thought to that significance. His nature couldn’t formulate such a predisposition. Hustling carts and bags for white folk while saying yesah and nosah drives a man either to anger or defeat. Daniel revealed neither. Humility permeated his every pore, and I was graced to bathe in it and be loved by it. His love for me is a deep well from which I draw a sustaining spirit when life’s harshness dehydrates me. When his memory arrests my attention, I hear Scripture’s call and remember. Jesus tells a similar story about a certain man who went down from Jerusalem to Jericho and fell among thieves, who stripped him, wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead. A priest and Levite, indifferent, passed him by on the other side of the road. Only the Samaritan had compassion and tended to this man beyond expectation. There are four men in the story. Three we know something about. But the certain man, beyond his predicament, we must guess. Of this man, we know he went down, and down, at least metaphorically, is worse than up. Don’t all men, like Adam, go down? Some men, like the priest and Levite, codify down into a self-ward inclination, embracing importance as they see it. Daniel may have on some level rejected significance or knew to aspire to it would be met with harshness. I did not. My ensuing years pursued it with vigor. Only hindsight and grace have shown me the sin it is, and worse, the many sins begotten by its pursuit. Justifying them was such a

short walk to presumption, which was just another means of sinning myself away from Scripture. I knew I was right because my ambition told me I had to be. Determined to create heaven-on-earth, all these little supposed-to’s crept into my thinking, and if I had to live up to them, so did everyone else. Collective thought must begin somewhere. Why not pride? Sin pride.
I often wonder where the Samaritan was before our certain man left Jerusalem. Maybe he could have warned him. Maybe someone did. Maybe the man didn’t listen. The story suggests he was somewhat unaware. And isn’t this Daniel and me? Of men, each walks the road, confused sometimes about up and down, about god and God. Daniel be light in me, Gospel in me, Spirit in me. God in me, Unify me.

Gò0dNews for Everyone How Should a Christian Think About Suicide? ooner or later, the painful reality of suicide affects every Christian. Thinking biblically about it now will help us respond biblically and faithfully then, both for our own peace in the moment and for serving others in their sorrow. 1. Suicide is sin against both God and man. The 6th Commandment, “Thou shalt not kill” (Exodus 20:13), requires all lawful endeavors to preserve our own lives (Ephesians 5:28-29) and the lives of others (1 Kings 18:4) and absolutely forbids the taking away of our own lives, or the life of our neighbor unjustly, or whatever tends thereunto (Genesis 9:6). To take your own life is selfmurder, violating God’s moral law and sinning against God, your own body, and your neighbor (Baptist Catechism, Q. 73-74). 2. Suicide is fundamentally an act of self-rule, not submission to God. Autonomy (auto, self; nomos, rule) is casting off God’s law and aiming to rule myself. By its nature, this is not an act of faith but unbelieving lawlessness (1 John 3:4), and the Bible is clear that whatever doesn’t proceed from faith is sin (Romans 14:23b). It attempts, at some level, to override God’s sovereignty—to live my life and die my death on my terms rather than God’s. 3. Suicide usually results in dying with unconfessed sin. Because man cannot know his own heart, every Christian will die with some unknown, unconfessed sin (Jeremiah 17:9). Our concern, however, is the intentional nature of this particular sin. No professing Christian should ever sin presumptively (Romans 6:1-2), much less commit so public a sin with so permanent an effect. Scripture’s remedy is the same for everyone: full redemption is promised to anyone who looks to the grace of Jesus Christ by faith alone (Psalm 130:7). The blood of Jesus cleanses His people from all sin (1 John 1:7)—known and unknown. 4. Suicide is an act of devaluing life. It buys into the prevailing “culture of death,” just as abortion does. Genesis 9:6 considers wrongly taking a life an assault on the image of God. While Adam’s sin resulted in death (Genesis 2:17; Romans 5:12; 1 Corinthians 15:21), God defeated death in the death of Christ and calls His people’s death their gain

(Philippians 1:21), their possession (1 Corinthians 3:22), and precious in His sight (Psalm 116:15). He purposes the day and details of their deaths (Psalm 139:16; Hebrews 9:27a) and promises to walk closely with them at their time of death (Psalm 23:4; Isaiah 43:2). To devalue your life by suicide is to dismiss as worthless God’s many promises never to forsake His own (Hebrews 13:5-6). 5. Suicide tempts others to sin as well. Whether inviting them to despair, discouragement, bitterness, resentment, sinful anger, distrusting God, embracing wrong views of
God, or even their own suicide, it offers Satan a foothold (Ephesians 4:27) and entices others to their own rebellion against God. More could be said, but in closing, if you’re facing suicidal thoughts or temptation, or if you’re dealing with loss from someone else’s suicide, get help. Talk to your pastor or see a godly counselor who can help care for your soul. Don’t put yourself in situations where your struggles are strengthened or consume “entertainment” that glorifies self-harm. Ask a trusted friend to check on you regularly. And above all else, look to Jesus Christ (Hebrews 12:1-3). In His great mercy, He is near to the broken-hearted (Psalm 34:18), and He holds His people forever with a love that will not let us go. stumbled upon this recipe right after Christmastime, desperately needing something fresh after ALL the holiday cookies. Let me tell you, it did not disappoint. It was easy to make and had ingredients you can use for all sorts of things—so no waste! It took about 10 minutes to prep and is great to eat by itself for a light lunch, paired with grilled chicken, steak, or pita bread and hummus!
Ingredients • 1 can rinsed and drained chickpeas • 1 diced large cucumber • 1c quartered cherry tomatoes • 1/4c finely diced red onion • 2T chopped fresh parsley • Juice from half a lemon • Swirl of EVOO • Seasoning salt & pepper • *Optional mix-ins—feta cheese, shredded carrots, olives, spinach, etc.!
