Becoming a Man of God n football, the Walter Payton Man of the Year award selects the person who does the most in their community and names them the “Man of the Year.” What exactly does it mean to be a man, though, especially a Christian man? The world defines manhood many different ways, but there’s more to being a man than just being a mature person who is not a woman. In looking at the Word, there are many men who stand out as examples for us. We can begin with the Patriarchs. Abraham was called the “father of many nations.” It was said of him that his faith was “counted as righteousness.” Abraham had such great faith that when God told him to sacrifice his son, he obeyed without question. However, Abraham lied about his wife and claimed that she was his sister while they were in Egypt. Then there was Isaac. He had a special anointing from God, but Isaac also lied and claimed that his wife was his sister, just like his father. Is that the model we’re looking for? What man would risk having his wife defiled by another man? How about Jacob? His offspring became the twelve tribes of Israel. Jacob was given the name “Israel” after wrestling with God for an entire night and refusing to relent until he received his blessing. But Jacob was known as a deceiver and cheated his own brother out of his birthright. Next, there’s David. David was called “a man after God’s own heart.” With one stone, he took down the mighty giant Goliath. David wrote many of the Psalms. The people sang about how David slew tens of thousands, and he won the hearts of many. But David lusted after someone else’s wife. He committed adultery and ended up killing a man as a result. How about Peter? Peter preached one of the greatest revivals of his time on the day of Pentecost and thousands were saved. He healed the sick. He walked on the water with Jesus. It was of Peter that Jesus said, “On this rock I will build my church.” But Peter was the one who denied Jesus three times when it came down to it. It was Peter who was rebuked by Paul for shying away from the Gentiles when the Jews came around. Surely not Peter! And how about Paul? Paul wrote most of the New Testament. It was Paul who said that “to live is Christ, and to

die is gain.” It was Paul who admonished the church to live according to the calling that God had given them. Paul was called to be an apostle by Jesus Himself. But it was also Paul who chased down and killed many of those who were chosen. Are any of these men an example of what we would want to model ourselves after to be men of God? If not them, then who? I say all of them. Proverbs 24:16 says, “For the righteous falls seven times and rises again.” 1 John 1:9 says, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” The fact is that
God knew our shortcomings and our failures before He even called us. What we see in any one of the characters above is that they were called by God to be men after Him. In spite of their flaws, they were men restored by God. Being a man of God doesn’t mean we live a perfect life, but we live a perfected life by what Christ has done for us. It means that staying down when you fall is NOT an option. It means that by whatever means necessary, we keep moving forward in our pursuit of God’s call in our lives. It also means that as we move forward, fulfilling that calling to be men of God, we are involved in the restoration of other men in their calling. Men of God, take your position! About The Author

I Wish to Dance in Eternity came home from school one day with some pride but lacking an astute awareness of consequences. I presented mom with my homework to show her my good grades and progress. I waited for that facial expression exposing her approval. When her eyebrow raised and her eyes squinted, I paused. Looking at me, she said, “This is not my signature!” Her tone of voice made me freeze, swallow my breath, and weakly submit to her, “It’s not?”
“Who signed this?” she said. Caught, head lowered, unable to make eye contact, my forgery career ended with a barely audible, “Me.” A nine-year-old lacks the necessary experience to deceive a discerning parent, especially one that is a master at dispensing consequences and stern looks. Living life is a seduction and we are the mistress of our desire. Hey, why should I bother my hard-working mother for a signature when I could do it for her? It is a good thing to learn early in life that God provides, though consequential pain does not inspire the thought of God’s blessing. I remain thankful for my mother’s stern correction. Generations come and generations go, and in the passing, each, by their own faith, leaves a legacy of their

choosing—love and life’s aberration. Life offered me many opportunities to deviate from my path. Along the way, there were people who would not allow me the choice when I bent toward stupidity. Call them friends or angels, but love possesses as much a correcting quality as an affirming one. God provides His righteousness amid our unrighteousness, the Holy Spirit, His creation, and His servants in our midst. He is the God who set the rainbow in the sky and the God who promised, “I will never again curse the ground for man’s sake, although the imagination of man’s heart is evil from his youth” (Genesis 8:21). How do we come to live in His provision except to spend our selfrighteousness until all is spent and faith enlightens our illusion? Have not all sinned and fallen short? Is not God’s forbearance a sign of His love and is not our faith a proper response? Can faith be faith if it holds tightly to our self-will? There are those who wish to impose their will and those who wish to dance with creation. Those who dance, dance in eternity. And those who impose their will, wither and die. “Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?” (Matthew 6:26). And lest we forget the lilies of the field, they neither toil nor spin. Yet we, in habitual silence, toil and spin away with perpetual pride. Faith has enlightened me to my illusion: the forgery of God’s will as my own. But now, I wish to dance in eternity. Thanks, Mom! “He who has ears to hear, let him hear” (Matthew 11:15). Making Homes Peachy Clean
T
he dirtiest place in your home isn’t your pet’s food bowl or the family toothbrush holder; it’s your kitchen sponge. In fact, it has more bacteria than your toilet. Cleaning products are traditionally found in grocery stores, which are particularly slow to make decisions. “It is really a testament to God’s grace and providence that we are here today,” Zach said. “It definitely was not an overnight success. It took years of perseverance.” The company’s first ever sale was to Walmart through a distributor who got them in a few local stores as a trial run. Then, that same distributor got Peachy Clean regionally distributed by Kroger, and the product continued to grow from there. Losing Focus Causes Doubt by Robert Leamon
O
ne of the biggest ways that Satan can cause us to fall is by temptation. How do we fall? First, we doubt. It might sound funny, but it’s the truth.
1 Corinthians 10:13 says, “No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.” So God provides us a way of escape: Jesus. One of man’s biggest problems is that we tend to focus more on the material things of life than on the spiritual side of life, which includes salvation. We have our stuff and it doesn’t matter what we have to sacrifice to get it: we will. Imagine if we were willing to sacrifice everything for the One who owns it all anyway. I truly believe that we have a void inside us that yearns and burns for Almighty God, but I also believe that we have a choice. God gave us free will to choose: Him or the world. You might even say, “Well, I’m not going to make a choice,” but all that means is that you have already made a choice. If you continue to read verses 13-26 in 1 Corinthians 10, you will see that Paul continues to warn us to flee from worldly things, but even that is a choice. Remember, there are many things in this world that will steal our focus. In my own life I find that every time I take my eyes off of Jesus, I lose my focus and I begin to see a trend and a trail of sin that follows. Matthew 14:26-31 tells us that when the disciples saw Jesus walking on the water, they were afraid and thought He was a ghost, but Jesus told them who He was. Peter said, “If it is you, I want to come out on the water with you,” and Jesus said, “Come.” Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water toward Jesus, but when he took his eyes off of Jesus and saw the storm going on around him, he began to sink. So why do we doubt? Maybe it’s because we take our eyes off of Jesus and begin to doubt He will do what He says He will. Just remember that our focus is everything. We should always look at our salvation as our treasure. Matthew 6:21 tells us that where our treasures are, our hearts will also be. It is better to be focused on Jesus Christ and our eternity than on things that will pass away (1 John 2:15-17).

Delivered from the Tsunami of 2004 ur family got settled into our beautiful condo in Singapore. Just a few months later, my husband’s job ended. At first we were shocked, but after some time in prayer, we realized that God had another plan for us. This job was just a stepping-stone to get us back to the U.S.A. I called Christopher, a pastor from our church, who offered to come to our home and pray for us before we left. He was very kind and reassured us that God was well aware
of our situation and that He would provide for us. He then prayed Psalm 91 over our family. We were comforted with this Scripture being prayed over us and felt the love of God. Yet, we had no idea what significance this prayer would have in our lives. A short time later, we heard the news of the Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami of 2004. We watched the news just a day after Christmas with deep sadness at the massive loss of human life and devastation in so many countries all around us. What was reported as a few hundred lives lost in the beginning quickly grew to more than 230,000. Like most of the watching world, we were in shock for quite some time. I checked with everyone I knew and was

relieved that none of our friends lost loved ones, but my heart ached for all those who did. After a few days, I was meditating on the Scripture the pastor prayed over us. I remembered some of the verses in the prayer and quickly got my Bible to look up the psalm. Tears streamed down my face as I read God’s prophetic Word to us. Psalm 91: 1-7: “He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress; my God, in Him I will trust.’ Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the perilous pestilence. He shall cover you with His feathers, and under His wings you shall take refuge; His truth shall be your shield and buckler. You shall not be afraid of the terror by night, nor of the arrow that flies by day, nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness, nor of the destruction that lays waste at noonday. A thousand may fall at your side, and ten thousand at your right hand; but it shall not come near you.” I am amazed that God would have mercy upon me and my family. I am very thankful that He protected us and brought us out of that tragedy. Psalm 91:14-16: “Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore I will deliver him; I will set him on high, because he has known My name. He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him and honor him. With long life I will satisfy him, and show him My salvation.” This testimony is shared from my book “His Legacy of Love.” I live with my husband and five children in the San Francisco Bay Area. Advancing in Battle very battle has more at stake than we realize. When the giant from Gath challenged King Saul's army, racial superiority and slavery were the victor's spoils. Goliath questioned Israel's courage and willingness to defend her Godly principles. To defy Israel's calling was to defy the God of that calling. For the devil to defy the church's destiny is to defy the God who established the church. But, God does not fight His battles by worldly methods. Goliath called for a man among Israel's army, but God sent a boy. David's battle with Goliath began years before he walked into the Valley of Elah. The lion and the bear were practice for the day David would face his giant. Neither the bear nor the lion were after the shepherd boy; they were after what David was responsible for. David's victory over the lion and the bear conditioned him for the coming conflict with Goliath. His past prepared him for his future. When David arrived at the battlefield, he found that the enemy had been taunting a generation of God's people for forty days. Upon hearing the giant's verbal onslaught, the bear basher and the lion eliminator threw fear to the rear and stepped forward into what would be the path to his destiny. David's purpose was to defend the honor of God, but God's purpose was to promote David. David heard the threats of the Philistine, but they were drowned out by the promises of God. than the risks of facing his enemy. By stepping forward, David turned opposition into opportunity despite the jealousy of his brothers or Saul's good-hearted interference. David knew that success depended on fighting the Philistine on God's terms. David encouraged himself by rehearsing his victories over the lion and the bear while he scavenged along the creek bed to find the five stones needed to dispense not only Goliath but his four brothers if necessary. David planned his strategy so that he would not have to fight the same battle over and over. After David's sling found its target and the Philistine fell face first into the dust of defeat, David used the giant's own weapon to silence him forever. Today's church faces a family of gigantic opposition, but modern-day Davids need to understand that every act of opposition is merely an opportunity to kingdom advancement. The church needs to stop cowering in the storm of her enemies' insults and threats and hear the heavenly thunder of God's voice. Is there a David among the church's ranks that will not only defy the enemy of God but the fear fostered by tradition? If so, he will need to shuck off history's armor, search out his own smooth stones of methodology, and defeat those that defy his God.
