Timing is (Not) Everything MONEY MATTERS

“I
f you’re so smart, why ain’t you rich?” It’s a valid question, and one I’d like to pose to anyone who practices “day trading” of stocks or other “market timing strategies” in the belief that a wavy or zig-zag line on a stock chart can actually predict stock prices or movements in the stock markets. Serious economists, many of them winners of the Nobel Prize in Economics, have unequivocally proven that trying to time the market is a fool’s errand; in other words, it doesn’t work. One study I found reveals that over a twelve-month period, less than 2% of day traders actually earned a profit. And yet, those who tout “market timing strategies to earn millions” are still around. Just recently, I heard a radio commercial advertising a “free seminar” to learn “market timing strategies” coming to an arena in Chattanooga. Let’s apply some logic--if you really did know some secret system to predict the next upward or downward movement of global stock markets, why would you be holding seminars to teach people how to do it? These seminars typically work like this (and I know because I have acquaintances who have attended them, sadly). The first meeting is usually “free,” to get you excited about promises of making hundreds of thousands of dollars in the stock market in a very short period of time. Then, they try to sell you their “course” about how to read stock charts and predict moves in the stock market, usually for several thousand dollars. Then, they confess that if you want the “big money,” you’ll need to pay for the “deluxe course” which is about $30,000. You get the picture. Now here’s the question again—if this stock market “guru” actually knew the secrets to predicting the movements of

The guru would already have countless billions upon billions of dollars earned from this great “secret” of market timing, and the guru would know that sharing the secret would effectively destroy their whole market timing system. Indeed, the whole notion of timing the stock markets by reading movements on stock charts is absurd. Don’t buy it. Unfortunately, I know people who actually have bought this—hook, line, and sinker. They have quit their jobs with the belief they had finally found their secret to quick riches. They have told anyone who will listen that they will have millions within the next year or two using stock chart timing systems. Not surprisingly, this never happened. These folks are now disillusioned and bitter, and with good reason. But don’t take my word for it. Dr. Burton Malkiel, one of the most highly-respected economic academics and author of the best-selling book A Random Walk Down Wall Street, has this to say about market timers, also known as “chartists” or “technicians” who study zig-zagging lines of stock movements in the vain hope of seeing a pattern about the future: “On close examination, technicians are often seen with holes in their shoes and frayed shirt collars.” In other words, these so-called experts are usually flat broke, so their secret “system” has obviously failed. So when the market-timing “gurus” show off photos of their mansions and flashy cars, remember that their money comes from selling seminars and day-trading courses to gullible suckers, not from profits earned by a secret stock market strategy. Buy stock index funds instead, and stay invested for the long-term in a well-diversified portfolio. That’s a time-tested strategy for building real wealth.

• 1 slice of uncured turkey bacon (antibiotic, hormone & nitrate free) • 1 tbsp grass-fed butter • 2 tbsp chopped onions
1. Cook turkey bacon in pan to desired crispiness. Set aside.

After that talk with my friend, I began talking with my daughters about their power and authority as daughters of God. The next time my daughter came to me at night due to a bad dream, I shared with her about how I pray and call on His authority to tell the thoughts and images to go away. I put it in her words and told her to tell the thoughts that she does not want them here and that Jesus says to go away.
Imagine the power those thoughts and images can have for a child whose mind lives in an imaginary state. I vividly remember dealing with these fears as a child

ne of the things that some Christians do today is to pray
What I want to leave you with in telling you this testimony is
for God to speak a word over them that encompasses
that God is a promise keeper. He keeps His words to you, so hold

Over the next five months, God used this time in my life to change my entire perspective on the power of words. I gained a whole new spiritual insight into the weight of the words others spoke over me, the power contained in the things God spoke over me, and the significance of the words that I spoke over myself. His ways are higher than our own, and I am thankful for that truth. In life, we are often faced with fears, trials, worries, and uncertainties. I am thankful that, through this journey He had me on, I was able to learn valuable spiritual truths and fall more deeply in love with a God who never leaves my side. When God laid it on my and my husband’s hearts to pray for a word for 2019, God had my heart in a place where I put great value in words, especially the words that He spoke over me. Those words were my strength each day and the only way I could combat my fears with my health. Growth and provision: these words were so powerful for me that they knocked me off of my spiritual feet. We are three months into 2019 and these two words ring loud and clear in this year for us already. As far as growth is concerned,

They are also issues that can be solved with one simple solution: a workout partner. Here are three ways in which having a workout partner will benefit you:
1. Motivation. Your workout intensity, frequency, and duration can all be positively or negatively affected based solely on how motivated you are feeling. With a workout partner, you can worry less about pushing yourself because they will be there to do that for you. In a study done at Michigan State University, researchers found that women working alongside a partner doubled the duration of their aerobic workout in comparison to those that were exercising alone. When it comes to lifting weights, I’ve seen similar results in my own personal life. I have found that when I am working out with someone who is as strong as or stronger than me, I am more motivated to lift a little heavier or get a few more reps in. 2. Enjoyment. It’s fair to assume that most of us have experienced some sort of exercise that bored us to tears. Bringing along a

buddy will immediately increase the level of enjoyment, no matter the type of exercise in which you are participating. For example, long runs or rest periods between sets can drag on and make your workouts feel like they are taking forever, but having a partner with you can dramatically improve these situations. Having someone to talk to during a run can make time fly by, and your run will be over before you know it. Similarly, if you are occupying your rests between sets by spotting your partner, your workouts will have a lot less downtime and be far less boring. 3. Accountability. One of the most important and difficult parts of living a healthy lifestyle is accountability. It is always easy to say, “I will just go work out tomorrow,” or, “Eating fast food for this one meal won’t hurt anything.” This mentality can easily spiral out of control. Tomorrow becomes the next day, and that one fast food meal turns into the next five. This is where your workout partner can become your accountability partner. With your workout partner there to hold you accountable, it will be much easier to stay consistent and to not stray off course. When someone is checking up on you on a regular basis, you become more aware of the decisions that you make. This can help you make better decisions more often. To some people, living a healthy lifestyle is a breeze. To the rest of us, it is a day-by-day struggle. Facing that struggle alone can be taxing and wear you down over time. Having someone by your side to motivate you and hold you accountable for your decisions can make that struggle far more bearable. Having a workout partner will not only help you be better but also allow you to be there to do the same for them. So, get out there, find a friend, and push each other to be the best that you can be!

Northwest Georgia Healthcare Partnership
T
ackling tough health issues has been the raison d’etre for the Northwest Georgia Healthcare Partnership (NGHP) since its inception nearly 27 years ago. Today, the NGHP’s fundamental precepts – the four “pillars” consisting of Healthy Lifestyles, Access to Healthcare, Disease Management, and Senior Living – rest on the base of an organization that – to put it simply – “‘ain’t’ your grandad’s healthcare partnership any more.” As a collaborative effort between providers of healthcare, business and industry, local government, educators, and public health, the non-profit NGHP serves Northwest Georgia, seeking to create fundamental changes in the delivery of health services throughout the region. “We’re able to identify programs that the community needs and are then able to experiment to find new solutions to old problems,” reflects NGHP’s Chief Executive Officer Greg Dent. “Instead of finding other people to ‘do the work,’ if we’re the best ones to do it, we will gladly take it on.” Several of these new solutions for old problems have fallen under the category of Healthy Lifestyles. The Downtown Dalton Farmer’s Market (DDFM), for example, has become a summer staple for area residents who stop by the Dalton Green Park on Tuesdays and Saturdays to purchase farm fresh fruits and vegetables and homemade baked goods, including breads, pastries, jams and jellies.

And not only is this biweekly farmer’s market a boon for those who love the taste of homegrown produce, the event has become a way to educate children about the importance of eating healthily for life as well. Continuing to grow in popularity and scope, the DDFM has recently become even more kid friendly with its Family Fun Days, which feature arts and crafts for the whole family and a “bounce house” and Kona snow cones for the young at heart. The Bill Gregory Healthcare Classic, Dalton’s oldest and largest annual road race, is another component of Healthy Lifestyles, one that raises funds for NGHP initiatives while promoting exercise and physical fitness. Expanding gradually over its nearly four-decade “run,” the Healthcare Classic includes 10K, 5K, and 2K walk/runs and is held on the second Saturday each May. This year, a 10K Adaptive race was added to accommodate athletes with special needs, thereby emphasizing the importance of physical fitness for all.
Other important initiatives of NGHP have been introduced over recent years including Bike Around Murray, or BAM, which embodies the values of Healthy Lifestyles through its emphasis on physical fitness but also focuses on Type II Diabetes disease awareness through its mission to educate the community about how to assess risk factors and perhaps prevent developing the increasingly common insulin disorder. BAM is a Grand Fondo style bike ride, featuring four routes along the beautiful scenic hills of Murray County, including 10-mile, 22-mile, 50-mile, and 62-mile courses, with the 62-mile ride featuring the competitive Fort Mountain climb. And yet one more invaluable program under Healthy Lifestyles is the NGHP’s leadership of Readers 2 Leaders, which promotes the development of healthy minds via encouraging literacy competency, particularly among preschool through elementary aged children, through extensive book distributions, reading programs, and literacy celebrations. Under the pillar of Access to Healthcare, NGHP’s Women’s Health Initiative and Healthy Babies program help underinsured women and their offspring attain health services at reduced to no out-of-pocket costs. Since many women delay or even forgo annual mammogram screenings because of the anticipated costs, lack of adequate health insurance, and/or fear of the unknown, NGHP has applied for and received additional grant funds that enable the organization to offer even more free screenings than in recent years, plus translation services to facilitate the process of navigating an often complicated healthcare process for non-English speaking area residents. Access to free and reduced-cost cervical cancer screenings are available as well. Similarly, the Northwest Georgia Healthy Babies program, a partnership between NGHP, Hamilton Health Care System, Associates in Obstetrics and Gynecology (AOG), and the Whitfield County Health Department, increases the number of uninsured mothers-to-be who can attain excellent, affordable prenatal care throughout their pregnancies.
And each October, NGHP sponsors yet another public awareness event that promotes Access to Healthcare in the form of the Erwin Mitchell Community Health Fair. Held at the Mack Gaston Community Center, the Saturday event provides access to certain health scans including blood pressure and cholesterol level screenings. Participants often learn about their risk factors for developing breast, cervical, prostate and other cancers and they also gain exposure to area vendors who can provide various support tools and literature free of charge. In the NGHP office suite, many of the Disease Management programs are housed, such as Promotoras de Salud and Cancer Support Groups. Targeting the medically underserved, Promotoras de Salud is a healthcare outreach program which aims to increase care and health awareness among the region’s Latino and non-Latino populations. Cooking classes aimed at teaching underserved community members how to prepare and cook meals in the most healthsustaining means possible are offered on a regular basis. Other services provided via the Promotoras include case management, wellness classes, and translation services. Last but not least is the pillar that supports Senior Living. NGHP has taken the lead in providing educational seminars for seniors on topics dealing with end-of-life concerns, completing advanced directives, and in providing a senior directory. “Our partnership continues to expand its work, growing our impact around the region,” Dent says. “In some communities we often see organizations get caught up in talking about what everybody else should be doing. “We see our role, however, as not just talking about what needs to be done and not just laying the groundwork to support our desired outcomes, but in daring to look at health care initiatives and services in new, different, and collaborative ways.”

Love never fails.” In marriage, how often do we find ourselves displaying the true characteristics of love? When was the last time that you can recall during an argument that you had an opportunity to be very angry but chose love over being right? Let’s say your spouse did something wrong, and instead of putting the action in your back pocket to eventually use as ammunition, you chose to let it go and not to bring it back up again. I am sure, if we were truly honest with ourselves, that it has been a while because the hustle and bustle of life and technology has made us forget how to communicate with and love others, especially those closest I want to challenge all couples to make this the month of putting the word “love” into action! During his career he has had the privilege of training with a variety of instructors versed in multiple styles of the martial arts. Robert, together with his wife Lisa, stepped out on faith and founded Christ Centered Martial Arts (CCMA) in 2008. He is the chief instructor of CCMA and they have a main dojo (karate school) located in Rocky Face, Georgia, and another dojo in Chatsworth, Georgia. Robert and Lisa are very involved with their home church Emmaus Baptist as well as teaching an AWANA’s elective karate class at a couple of other area churches. Terrible Twos and a Terrible Me y son, do not despise the chastening of the Lord, nor detest His correction; for whom the Lord loves He corrects, just as a father the son in whom he delights” (Proverbs 3:11-12). Have you ever thought to yourself how terrible you might have been during the “terrible twos” stage? My son will be two on the 23rd of this month. The late months of currently being one have been the start of his “terrible twos.” Any mother who has been or is currently in this stage knows there are challenging moments. There is pouting, screaming, prostration on the floor with flailing legs and arms, hitting, and constant screaming of “no.” Let’s not get into the details of episodes at the grocery store when they do not get what they want. It’s an embarrassment, right? As I go through this stage with my son, I am constantly reminded of my “terrible” moments toward my Father, God. At times, I become frustrated, angry, upset, and sorrowful when I don’t get what I want immediately: for instance, a nice job, home, car, furniture, wardrobe, and an excess of other wants. My lips begin to protrude as I cross my arms and flare my nostrils, not understanding why I am not being blessed with these things. However, as I watch my son and observe his actions to my discipline while listening and reflecting on myself, I notice two observations. One, in my son’s shoes, I am immature: immature in that I feel I know what is best for me at a given time when, in fact, “what is best” may have a horrific outcome. For instance, I love the fact

that my son loves to go outside, especially on warm days. However, warm days in the spring and summer bring wasps and bees that could potentially be fatal and could cause allergic reactions. All he knows is cool breezes and open spaces he can enjoy. Likewise, there were many times I acted against God without knowing the consequences that my actions would bring. Two, God sees and knows everything before it happens. He is the God of knowledge, love, and understanding. He is caring and wants the best for His sons and daughters. I heard in a sermon one time that God may say yes, maybe, not yet, or no. I often catch myself telling my son these answers. This is not to be mean, unloving, or uncaring, but because I do love and care for him. I believe God blesses humankind with children to remind us of our relationship with Him and our role as His sons and daughters and also to see His perspective. As His daughter, I am constantly reminded not to “lean on my own understanding” (Proverbs 3:5) but to trust him always, even when I want to throw a tantrum. I am raising my son to know that “everything is permissible, but not beneficial” (1 Corinthians 10:23). I can have patience, love, and mercy while disciplining my son through the “terrible twos” stage because my Father is patient, loving, and merciful through my “terrible” moments in my life. To this I say, happy second birthday to my lovable son Zase. You are dearly loved!
