Letter from the Editor

T

he month of June is filled with lifelong promises, hopes, and dreams! In the ’70s there was a trendy statement plastered on bumper stickers and lapel pins: “Try Jesus.” Even though the intention was good, the phrase sounded too commercial and noncommittal. I admit that there are biblical grounds for this statement in Psalm 34 where David says, “Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good.” This could be interpreted as saying “try God . . . see that He is trustworthy.” But the trust David speaks about in Psalm 37 is not a “try-me-in-hard-times trust.” It is the kind of trust that has commitment woven into every fiber—like the yarn in a hand-knitted sweater. I have found that this kind of trust comes when we commit the full weight of our future—our very lives—into His hands. One day a friend and I happened to meet my husband, Bob, in his Jeep, on our way to lunch. We waved and continued our conversation. Then my friend said, “Wonder where he was going?” “I don’t know,” I said. “Probably to the auto parts store down the street.” “It doesn’t worry you that you don’t know?” she asked. “No! Why should it? I trust him.” In his Gospel, John describes a time in the ministry of Jesus when many walked away from Him . . . and a few vowed to stay with Him no matter what. “From that time many of His disciples went back and walked with Him no more. Then Jesus said to the twelve, ‘Do you also want to go away?’ But Simon Peter answered Him, ‘Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. And we have come to believe and know that You are the Christ, the Son of the living God’” (John 6:66-69, NKJV). With all his faults and failures, Peter passed the course in trust. He never questioned the Lord’s command. He didn’t have “Plan B.” When Jesus came walking on the water, Peter said, “Lord, if it’s you . . . tell me to come to you on the water” (Matt. 14:28, NIV) and he stepped out of the boat! That’s trust. When you really trust, you hold on to God’s promises as though your life depends on them. And it does.

very semester in my college English classes, I like to begin class with one particular devotional which starts with me displaying a screen of realtime stock market quotations. The students typically watch with glazed eyes as the numbers on the screen change rapidly—Dow Jones Industrial Average, Nasdaq, S&P 500. Then I ask, “How many of you are stressed out or depressed by what you see?” Typically not one hand is raised. Then I ask, “How many of you are overjoyed by what you see on this screen?” Again, almost always not one hand is raised. Students don’t respond to stock market quotations because they aren’t invested; rarely, if ever, do any of my students have any money invested in the stock markets. Consequently, they simply don’t care if the market goes up or down at any given time. Then I make the application to the devotional: if you’re not invested—if you haven’t put your time and money into something, it typically doesn’t mean that much to you. Only what we spend our time, efforts, and money on represents accurately what we value, what we care about. If we’re invested in missions work by giving money to help missionaries around the globe, then we start caring about the reports we receive on how the Lord is using these missionaries to spread the Gospel of Christ.

10 // June 2017

Recently, I heard a podcast by a man named John Hope Bryant, author of the 2014 book, How the Poor can Save Capitalism. The title may sound counter-intuitive, but Bryant raises many valid points. Bryant is an African American entrepreneur who founded Operation HOPE, as well as donating money to countless other charitable causes. Bryant’s passion is helping others become financially literate, and one of his core beliefs is that someone’s credit score can provide invaluable information (and speculation) about that person. Low credit score communities, he says, are “where the rioting is” located. Conversely, those with high credit scores tend to be places with low unemployment and a strong sense of optimism about the future. Is there any magic about these results? No, but the answer is so obvious that one might overlook it. Those people who have a high credit score might typically live by a written monthly budget, live on less than they make, and invest for long-term growth and/or goals. You may be thinking, “That sounds great, but what about those who didn’t make these same choices and are now suffering the consequences? The good news is that it’s never too late to start making wise decisions like the ones mentioned above. Proverbs 21:20 – “[There is] treasure to be desired and oil in the dwelling of the wise; but a foolish man devours all he has.” Let’s invest our time and money for Christ’s kingdom.

Gò0dNews for Women

A Women’s Worth

Be encouraged and know that your identity is found only in God and not in man. by Chandlin Johnson

W

here does your worth come from as a women? Is it the titles you hold, the worth you are to others, or is it your hopes and dreams? Many times women, being caregivers, we allow ourselves to be defined by what others call us, or how they see us. It often times depends on how we feel about ourselves. Yet none of those things gives us worth. Our worthiness comes from God; He is the one who gives us our identity. The question should be, “Who does God say I am and why?” Before the free gift of salvation, we were unworthy, unable to do anything to get to God or please Him. After grace, we became worthy because of Him. Second Corinthians 5:21 says, “For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him” (NKJV). Isn’t that absolutely amazing that God calls you and me to the righteousness of Him? If you are a woman who has been abused by anyone, called derogatory names, told you were worth nothing, stupid, or any other hateful things, let me be the one to tell you it’s all a lie! God tells us that we are the head and not the tail, above only and not beneath. In Deuteronomy 28:1-12, He calls us friend, beloved, more than conquers, His child, forgiven, blameless, blessed, and so much more. Begin to find out through the Word of God who you really are. Your identity is in Christ and Him alone.

14 // June 2017

The Lord’s Prayer found in Luke 11:2 says “Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven” (NKJV). We are the earth that He is talking about here, because we are created from the dirt of the earth. Astonishingly, what the Lord’s Prayer is saying right here, is for Him to duplicate Himself in us. What an incredible and exciting thing to know that the Creator of heaven and earth and us is also the One who made all things because nothing was created that was not created by Him (see John 1:3). His words created everything, and He wants to duplicate Himself in us because we are His vessel, His hands and feet to do His bidding until He returns. The great I AM who can do everything made you in His likeness and image not your own worth because you are nothing without God (see John 15:5). So the next time you are feeling down, or someone has made you feel as if you’re nothing, remember the One who created you and everything you see that’s good has called you to be His vessel. He says “Yes, indeed you are worthy to Me. As a matter of fact, you meant so much to Me I sent My only Son to die, so I could be with you.” Chandlin Johnson is a single mother of four beautiful children. Her heart’s desire is to minister to women and to help those who are trapped in human trafficking. More than anything she enjoys spending time with Jesus and worshipping Him in all forms of the Arts.

decades of life, I have found that some of the best memories are made around the dinner table. I remember Sunday dinners at my grandparents’ house, with uncles, aunts, and cousins all gathered around a small table. Everyone is in each other’s way, but none of us would have changed a thing. Now that several of those family members have gone on, I treasure those memories. As my husband and I started a family eighteen years ago, I knew that I wanted to make those same memories. I know it is not the norm, but my busy family of four manages to make it to the dinner table together several times a week. About 6:15 every night my house begins to bulge with activity. My husband and son arrive home famished after a strenuous workout at Crossfit Anistemi; my daughter finishes off her shift at a local afterschool program, and I complete my trek from a wonderful but stressful job with an Employee Benefits firm in downtown Chattanooga. I am always looking for an easy but filling meal to get on the table quickly without ruining the boys’ workout. Now that the temperatures have begun to rise, I love recipes that do not require me to turn my oven on. My husband loves to grill, and grilled chicken has become a staple in our house. We try to think constantly of new marinades and side dishes to keep it interesting. One of our favorites is my Greek pasta salad. After eating a Greek salad at one of our favorite local restaurants, I was inspired to turn it

Gò0dNews for Health & Fitness The Importance of Physical Activity in Children Daily participation in outdoor games, fitness activities, and recreational sports will improve the health and well-being of children and adolescents.

I

by Megan Stockburger

t’s no secret that the surge of technology over the past century has made the demand for us to be inactive rapidly. Since 1980, the childhood obesity rates have tripled and rates of obese teens quadrupled! In 2013, a study of high school students by the CDC found that only 27.1 percent participate in at least sixty minutes per day of physical activity on a regular basis. Since adolescents require more physical activity than adults, it becomes even more important to set them up for success! Addressing physical activity and increasing obesity in children and adolescents must first come from the home environment. In 2011, a year after the iPad launched, just 10 percent of U.S. children under the age of two were found to have used tablets or smartphones, but by 2013 that figure had nearly quadrupled. Charles R. Swindoll, a renowned Christian author and pastor, said, “Each day of our lives we make deposits in the memory banks of our children.” Children will remember habits formed and follow them through to adulthood. So let’s look at ways to tear the kids away from the screens and get them active!

Benefits of Physical Activities

According to ACSM, children and adolescents should accumulate a minimum of sixty minutes of combined moderate and vigorous intensity daily. Children and adolescents should also participate in activities that promote muscle strength on two or three days per week. Examples of activities for young children include climbing, jumping, tumbling and gymnastics, and a variety of games. Regular participation in different types of physical activity is essential for

24 // June 2017

healthy growth and development. Evidence shows that physical activity can have a beneficial effect on body composition, cholesterol, blood pressure, blood sugar, aerobic fitness, muscular strength, movement skills, and bone health. Regular physical activity can also improve academic performance and promote feelings of wellbeing. The positive lifestyle behaviors that develop from these activities tend to carry over into adulthood. In the long run, daily participation in outdoor games, fitness activities, and recreational sports will help to improve the health and well-being of all children and adolescents.

Options for Family Activity

Fortunately, we live in a community with tons of options for getting the family active. The Loop is a 4.1-mile sidewalk path that circles from Dalton State College, down Tibbs Bridge, and back up Walnut Ave. It also passes right by Civitan Park, which is a great place to stop and let the kids play on the playground or kick a soccer ball around the park. Dalton is also nestled between many state parks and hiking trails such as Cloudland Canyon, Disney Trail in Rocky Face, Raisin Wood Bike Trail in Dalton, Arrowhead Wildlife Trail in Rome, Glen Falls in Walker County, and many more! And if the weather is a little gloomy, The Bradley Wellness Center has kids’ camps, kids’ days, an indoor pool, basketball, and many more activities throughout the year for children.

Women’s Enrichment Center

T

The answer to a crisis pregnancy is to eliminate the crisis, not the child. —Jeannie W. French, National Women’s Coalition for Life by Ashleigh Welch

he Women’s Enrichment Center is a nonprofit, prolife pregnancy resource center that provides women, men, and families with the emotional help and practical resources needed to care for themselves during and after pregnancy. Our goal is to educate, empower, and enrich the clients we serve in the North Georgia area, including Whitfield, Murray, Catoosa, and Gordon counties. Our six-member staff includes Renee Rector, director; Amy McIntosh, volunteer coordinator; Cassie Coker, marketing; Ashleigh Welch and Jennifer Anderson, client-care coordinators; and Angela Asbury, nurse. Our first priority is consistent and compassionate care of the families we work with here in our community. Many of our clients are single, lack the support of friends and family, and are unsaved. By sharing the truth in love, we empower our clients through the gospel of Jesus Christ. “The Women’s Enrichment Center has enabled me to get closer to God because the staff and volunteers there are compassionate and actually care if their clients are close to God or not. I am prayed over at each visit and feel I can grow in my faith as I meet and talk with like-minded believers. It also helps to have adult conversations as I spend

26 // June 2017

the majority of my day talking to little ones,” said Heather Stanton, WEC client. In efforts to stand for life, we offer free pregnancy testing as well as ultrasound services. For those overwhelmed by life who may be considering abortion, we offer truth about the three pregnancy options: parenting, adoption, and abortion. Our staff and volunteers compassionately share their personal testimonies and encourage women not to make permanent decisions based on temporary circumstances. Many times, the ultrasound appointment becomes a pivotal moment for our clients. A recent abortion-minded client ended up choosing life for her baby after seeing the heartbeat of her baby on the monitor. "Normally, I don't even get to see a fetus at this early stage of gestation in a pregnancy. As I was scanning her abdomen, trying hard to just get a glimpse of life, in the silence of my mind I began to pray, ‘Dear Lord, please give us a sign, a heartbeat, something to prove to this young woman there is a beautiful life growing inside her. Make her aware of this baby that has a little personality, a future, and a God-given reason for being here.’ At that moment, the

tiny, little embryo made its presence on the screen, and the smallest, most precious little heart beat I've ever witnessed was present as well. It really chokes me up every time I think of that day. That sweet little mother and I shared some tears and hugs, and she made a decision right then to choose life for her unborn baby. We were all so proud of her and she beamed with joy and peace with her decision," commented Angela Asbury, Women’s Enrichment Center R.N., limited sonography. Through a series of classes called Earn While You Learn, we educate parents about pregnancy, infant care, life skills, discipline, and parenting. As parents attend classes, they earn points they may use to purchase items from our baby store. Access to free diapers, wipes, formula, clothing, car seats, and other babies items enable the parents to secure the essentials necessary for childcare. “The Women’s Enrichment Center offers has so many benefits. It has made things a lot easier on my husband and me since we have faced not one, but two unplanned pregnancies. There is less stress on our marriage and finances as we are able to get the items we need for our son, Reece,” said Heather Stanton, client. “The volunteers for the Women’s Enrichment Center (WEC) are kind and helpful. Having assistance with things I need for my baby is wonderful. The staff makes it a priority for women to be educated while going through a crucial phase in their lives,” said Aaron Lutz, client. Additional classes are offered to educate those in our community who may have had a child/children removed from their care by social services and are required to take classes for court. In addition, the WEC makes referrals to outside agencies, other nonprofits within the community such as DOC-UP, The Green House, and Greater Works. Another important facet of our program involves the encouragement of men and women who have suffered the loss of a child through either abortion or miscarriage; we are acutely aware of the emotional trauma associated with both. For those who have suffered a loss by either means, we offer

support and counseling. Our post-abortion support group, HOPE, is facilitated by a staff member who has personally been touched by abortion. It offers women hope when all seems lost. For more information about our programs and services, please visit our website at www.wecnorthga.org or find us on Facebook or Instagram. In addition, we can be reached at the following locations to answer any questions you may have regarding our mission, our programming, making a donation, or volunteering. We welcome monetary donations as well as the donation of gently-used or new baby items like cribs, car seats, and clothing. To inquire about volunteering, please contact our Dalton office and ask for Amy McIntosh, volunteer coordinator.

An Olympic Prayer

I

Praying specific prayers, trusting Him for specific provision, and waiting for His timing will change your life. by Earl Brackin

was caught by surprise when I heard Brad say, “I need a bluegrass band.” I was at a rest stop halfway between Tel Aviv and the Sea of Galilee. Looking at the arid topography of the Israeli landscape, I was at a loss to figure out what would have triggered such a comment. My church had graciously provided a ten-day tour of the Holy Land for my wife and me to go on. While I was trying to grasp the situation, another tour member chimed in. “He plays bluegrass,” and pointed at me. “Really!” Brad exclaimed. What I thought was just a vacation turned out to be God inviting me to be a part of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. Brad explained that the International Mission Board did evangelism at many of the Olympic Games. Since Olympic pin-trading was popular at the games, the mission group would produce an attractive pin volunteers could use to share the gospel. What they needed was a way to engage the crowd; thus, the idea of using a bluegrass band like “Roving Troubadours” was proposed. I just happened to have my newest CD in my camera bag. I gave it to Brad and said, “This is what I do. If you think you can use me, I’d be glad to see if we could work something out.” A week after we got home, Brad called. He liked the CD and asked if I would send a couple more for the Olympics mission team to preview. I did. This was November 1. My prayer was, “Lord, I can go or stay−whatever You want,” but I wanted to say, “Lord, this is great! Let’s do this.” The next two months I heard nothing, so I figured this was just one of those things in life that doesn’t pan out. My habit is to get up in the morning and spend time with the Lord in His Word and prayer. One Monday at the

28 // June 2017

end of January as I prayed, I felt the Holy Spirit urge me to pray specifically that God would open the door for me to take a team to Sochi for the Olympics. I thought that was too self-serving, so I just repeated my first prayer: “Lord, I can go or stay, whatever You want.” Again, I sensed disappointment from the Spirit. On Wednesday morning the Spirit pressed me more, but I offered my same prayer. On Thursday morning the Spirit again prompted me to make the request, but I just could not bring myself to be so bold in prayer. As I began my safe prayer, it was if the Holy Spirit was deeply hurt by my inability to obey. “Okay, I’ll do it. Lord, would you open the doors for me to take a band to the 2014 Olympics in Sochi?” When I got to my office around 10 o’clock, Brad called. “We want you to bring a team to the Olympic Games in Sochi.” Awash in a wave of emotions, I finally was able to say, yes. My thoughts turned toward the year ahead−a year of growing closer to God as I prayed more specific prayers, trusted Him for provision (over $40,000), put together a team (I didn’t have a band when I got the invitation), and learned to wait on His timing. That invitation to join Him in what He was doing changed my life. Where is He calling you to join Him? Wherever it is, take the adventure. The reward is knowing God like you’ve never known Him. Adopt a Foster Family

T

Listen for God’s voice−He may be calling you to become involved in foster care. by Jennifer Govea

here are families in your community who are fighting against drug and alcohol addictions, mental illnesses, and neglect. They are in a battle to protect children who live in homes where they may be witnesses to or victims of physical, emotional, or sexual abuse. These families try to provide a safe and more stable home for innocent children and teenagers. Many of them consider their labor of love as a ministry, obeying God’s command to care for children that many would consider “the least of these.” How can any one family achieve all of this? By being a foster parent! Foster parents provide temporary care while the Department of Family and Children Services (DFCS) work with the biological parents to help them get their kids back. Foster parents do all they can to give a child what he or she needs from basic needs including dental visits, clean clothes, haircuts, and a structured environment to daily luxuries we may take for granted such as being part of a sports team, going to the movies, going out to eat, and going on a family vacation. Foster children receive services like counseling and therapy provided by a variety of organizations. They also have their medical expenses covered by Medicaid, plus the foster parents receive a monthly reimbursement amount to help pay for meals, field trips, and toiletries, for example. These resources help the foster family and the child in their care, but they would also greatly benefit from another type of assistance that you can give! It is easy to get burned out from this demanding, yet rewarding role. Sometimes, foster parents need a break.

40 // June 2017

You can participate in this ministry by helping these families in one or more of the following ways: • Prepare a meal to take to their home the week that a new child comes into their care. • Donate clothing, bedroom furniture, or toys based on the foster child’s gender and age. • Buy her a small gift for her birthday. • Invite him to play at the park while his foster mom goes to the doctor. • Plan a play date when she may go to your house to play with your own kids. • Visit him at school and sit with him at lunchtime once a month. • Pick her up from school and help her with her homework. After spending some time with the foster family, perhaps you may start to hear God calling you to get more involved in foster care by caring for a foster child over the weekend while her foster parents go to a training or an out-of-town funeral. If you think that you wouldn’t qualify to help because you are single, don’t have children, are retired, or live in an apartment, none of that matters! You just need a big heart to help others and trust God to do the rest! For more information about how you can provide a break to foster parents, please contact Melanie Garlin, Resource Development at the Whitfield County DFCS office at 706.272.2805. Jennifer Govea is a bilingual editor and former missionary in Latin America. She and her husband currently work at Rock Bridge Community Church and have a son.

However, some types of anxiety do not follow a predictable pattern. Anxiety can result from a traumatic experience, or it can begin without warning and without a specific trigger. Most of the time, the symptoms don’t just “shut off” when it’s time to relax, have fun, or go to sleep at night. This type of anxiety can be the cause of much distress in our lives.

What are the dangers of anxiety?

Many times we think of anxiety

as an uneasy, nervous feeling, but it can have real physical symptoms as well. It can speed up our heart rate and cause pain, including headaches and other physical sensations. It can also trigger overeating and other unhealthy behaviors, including addictions. Anxiety can even affect a person’s short-term memory and ability to concentrate.

What are the symptoms of anxiety?

Created for Praise

Praising God in your private worship and devotion will fill you with overwhelming joy.

P

by Judi Marvin

raise is a beautiful expression of our love and adoration for a King who stepped down from heaven to live among His Creation. He is a holy, magnificent, majestic, loving king who created us not only for fellowship and worship, but also to give Him praise. What other god has ever loved His people so much that He would give up His throne, humble Himself, even to the point of an incredibly, violent death, in order to redeem and to save His own from the fires of an endless hell? But not just that, to save a people that would live eternally with Him in his kingdom. Answer? None. Not one. There is no other King but He. He is our Savior, our Redeemer; He is our all in all. How can we not give Him praise? I believe praise is a pouring out of ourselves. As we lift our hands and hearts before Him, the Holy Spirit who dwells within us lifts us up to meet our Lord. Our Spirit is joined together with His, and a sweet unity is formed. Perhaps not a "feeling" per se, but a warmth, an excitement, an indescribable interaction and yearning takes place. I dare say, it's almost like you're about to be raptured away! David, the sweet psalmist of Israel, spent his entire life in praise of his Lord. He even danced before the Lord. He rejoiced and danced like a child might do . . . unashamed . . . unreserved. He did not

50 // June 2017

care what others thought of him. He was worshiping his Father, his Lord and nothing else mattered. The result of his praise? It pleased the Lord. “Then David danced before the LORD with all his might; and David was wearing a linen ephod. So David and all the house of Israel brought up the ark of the LORD with shouting and with the sound of the trumpet” (2 Sam. 6:14-15 NKJV). Many Christians today are concerned with what others may think, so much so that they refuse to lift their hands, clap their hands, or show any expression of praise during worship services. They are missing out on such an inexpressible joy and honor that results from abandoning our fears and reaching out to an awesome God who loves us and is honored by our praise to Him. He's the only One we should ever be concerned with. Imagine Him reaching down His hand and touching ours as we sing our heart's praise to Him? How wonderful is that? So if you cannot bring yourself to praise Him corporately (which you will do eventually in Heaven), then at least give Him the praise due to Him in your private worship and devotion times. Don't be afraid. He will fill you with such a joy that you will not want to stop! You will be so overwhelmed; you will even weep! So Praise Him! Praise Him! Praise Him! That's what you were created for. Judi Marvin Ministry Assistant East Athens Baptist Church Athens, Tennessee
