The psalmist reminds us to always know that as God’s children, we have a benevolent Father who loves us and has our interests at heart in His perfect will. While daily anxieties may come, we will not be shaken because He is above all things. He secures us in His great strength—which is without equal. We can rest in the midst of trials and tribulations both securely and with gladness of heart. In fact, during both the good and bad times, verse nine says my glory (my whole being) rejoices. As believers, we have the security of knowing that no matter the circumstances of this world and our life in it, eternity is paid in full by our Savior Jesus Christ. Too Close for Comfort MONEY MATTERS

WITH DR. ANDREW LEE Dr. Andrew Lee is professor of English at Lee University. He also serves as a coordinator for Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University. He and his wife Esmerelda have three children.

ecently, I met a former student of mine for coffee and financial discussion. Brad Perkins is a financial advisor with Raymond James, and like me, he’s always reading financial books to learn more and educate himself. During our conversation we discovered that we shared a peculiar irony: namely, that as Jesus observed, “A prophet is not without honor, except in his own hometown” (Mark 6:4). In other words, both of us had tried in vain to help close relatives or friends by advising them not to continue down the path of unwise financial decisions, but our advice was dismissed or rejected out of hand, falling on deaf ears. Yet, we have both been contacted at various times by complete strangers who solicited our financial opinions and listened to us attentively. (Obviously, Brad is a licensed professional who is qualified and certified to dispense this advice in a fiduciary role, whereas my opinions are informal and more general, and I am not engaged in dispensing any legal or professional advice). But this situation presents a very perplexing paradox, indeed. Why do close relatives and friends often reject unsolicited advice, especially anything related to personal finance? The answer lies in the word “unsolicited.” Your friends and relatives may feel you are judging them somehow and perhaps even condemning their financial choices, which in their mind might jeopardize your relationship, as though you don’t respect their right to make their own decisions. Alternatively, it may simply be a question of personal values—some of our relatives and friends may feel that driving a leased luxury car or flaunting designer labels on clothing and handbags is essential to their sense of identity and self-esteem, regardless of whether they can afford these luxuries—and they don’t want to hear any

10 // July 2021

advice to the contrary. But still, you may feel the urge to “show them the error of their ways.” What to do? The easy answer is to do nothing; just hold your tongue; try to grin and bear it. This is America, after all, and our loved ones are free to do as they please, for the most part. However, perhaps you might suggest a helpful financial book like Dave Ramsey’s The Total Money Makeover, or maybe a helpful financial podcast offering practical advice regarding spending and investing such as The Mad Fientist or Talking Real Money or Stacking Benjamins or The Broke Millennial Podcast. Make a note of what seems to be important to this person in terms of spending or financial goals—saving for a child’s college education? Paying off credit cards? Golfing one day each week? Look for ways to inspire this person (or persons) to better manage money in order to reach these goals. In the spirit of “show, don’t tell,” be sure you model good behavior in subtle ways without being obnoxious. For instance, by always using cash or debit card at restaurants instead of a credit card, or by suggesting enjoyable activities that don’t involve spending any money, you are modeling wise financial practices without being “preachy” or “talking down” to someone. There’s a saying that “more is caught than is taught,” and through the process of observing your consistency and financial discipline, you never know the extent to which you can be a positive influence. Now, when it comes to your children, feel free to be more blatant and teach money lessons regularly and intentionally. But with adults, that approach is often too heavy-handed. God’s Word reminds us, “Whoever would foster love covers over an offense” (Proverbs 17:9a), so be patient and allow God to guide your advice and ensure your motives are pure.

to mind? “But the earthen vessel wherein it is sodden shall be broken, and if it be sodden in a brasen pot, it shall be both scoured, and rinsed in water” (Leviticus 6:28). Maybe you feel like a dusty old jar forgotten on the shelf, or an ugly water jug abandoned by the side of the road.

Unfortunately, my focus was on me and all the great things I was going to accomplish for God, rather than on God and all the great things He wanted to accomplish through me.   But for years I wondered, why does God use everyone else? What's wrong with me? Deep in my heart, I longed for the significance that can only come when our lives are a channel through which God can work. I wondered why some women were used in such powerful ways to minister to others, while I felt so ineffective.  Do you want to be a vessel God can use? Let go of your plans to do great things for God and cling to the truth that God is able to work through an imperfect vessel like you. It begins with an understanding of who God really is and who you are as His Creation. It's a process that involves accepting the purpose for which God has created you, even if it's not the life you envisioned for yourself. It requires being emptied of yourself and allowing God to

We sometimes forget the fact that there is complete freedom in Jesus's name. When we are deeply healed of all ailments that keep us from God, we are able to live our best lives. “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free” (Galatians 5:1). God cannot heal what we continue to hide. He sometimes brings old wounds to the surface for a purpose. He wants to cleanse the wound with the Balm of Gilead and free us from our pain. “Is there no balm in Gilead? Is there no physician there? Family Traditions

hen I was a child one of my favorite family traditions was playing outside on a summer night catching fireflies in a glass jar. We would

This summer would be a great time to begin creating favorite family traditions. How do you get started? Here are a few suggestions: • Have a family meeting to talk about what family traditions were important to you in your family. • Share how you want to develop family traditions with your children. • Suggest guidelines for the traditions that would work with your family. cost money. • Make plans to begin creating those family traditions. Below are some suggestions to assist you in getting started: Indoor Camping—use sheets and blankets to build tents over the furniture. Have a sleeping bag for everyone in the tents. Be sure to provide camp snacks for the evening. Turn off the lights and use lanterns or flashlights for the evening. Have a story time where one person starts with the lead for the story and then everyone must add to the story. Sing songs using pots and pans as instruments! A How-To-Night—learn something together as a family. This might include how to cook a certain kind of food, planting a small garden in flowerpots, learning how to do

Backwards Night—have everyone wear their clothes backwards. Serve a backwards meal by eating dessert first, the main dish next, and end with an appetizer. Play backwards games: Do Not Follow the Leader (do the opposite of the leader), Reverse Freeze Dance (when music stops dance, when music plays freeze), or Backward Bean Bag Toss (throw a bean bag over your shoulder into a box turned upside down). Family traditions can be a good way of showing love to your children. It is a way to celebrate your children as the gifts God has blessed you with. “Because they are always giving and sharing, truly, their children are a joyful blessing” Ps. 25:27 (The Voice). As a preacher, I often say things like— “I heard God telling me to preach on such and such a topic…” Did I really hear God’s voice? The answer is yes and no. I have not ever heard God speak to me in an audible voice, as Genesis 17:1 describes El-Shaddai speaking to Abram. However, I am not lying when I say, “I heard God telling me…” God does speak to me—He whispers to my heart and I intuit what He says. I feel Him leading me. Gò0dNews for your Taste Buds Banana Spice Cake with Cream Cheese Frosting by Pam Wattenbarger

eminiscent of that Southern summer classic, Hummingbird Cake, this version comes

together easier and quicker thanks to starting with a boxed mix. The uniced cake layers can be frozen up to three months by following these instructions. Allow the cake to cool completely. Wrap the layers tightly with plastic wrap. Wrap these layers in aluminum foil and place in an airtight container. This technique prevents the cake from absorbing moisture and becoming freezer-burned.

Ingredients For the cake: • 1 (15.2-ounce) box spice cake mix • 1 cup milk

Instructions • Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a large bowl, place the spice cake mix, milk, butter, and eggs. Using a mixer, stir until blended. • Add in the mashed bananas and beat until the mixture is well blended.

• 4 large eggs

• Pour the batter into a greased 9” by 9” baking dish. Bake for 35-40 minutes or until a knife inserted into the middle comes out clean. Remove cake from oven and allow to cool completely before frosting.

Asking For Forgiveness

by Thomas Sturgeon, Jr.

sking for Forgiveness

Really I don’t mean to do it

Silently troubling my heart

Giving me some pride about my work

Keep going like my father

I ask for forgiveness, even though Not heard, I’m giving it to God, for He knows He created me Forgiveness, I’m not shy anymore Offering me a chance to take His hand Ready for a new life, I’m willing oh Lord

If I’m never heard, will He let me know? Violence isn’t the key, O Lord Nothing can go with me, I have belief in Christ who strengthens me Even though I don’t get my way Success is with me if only I believe in Him Starting to think, streets of gold. Heaven is here

On that same boat again, I lie 44 // July 2021

Real, walking, talking, literal, angry giants. After almost six weeks of exploration, the explorers returned to camp and gave their report. They told of the amazing land they had seen. They even brought back produce they had found as proof of their tales. Ten of the twelve explorers were determined to tell the rest of the travelers that the land could not be inhabited—the giants were too great to overcome. Caleb and Joshua told a different story. They didn’t argue with the report, but they disputed the conclusions. God had promised Israel that He would give them the land of Canaan, and there was no giant

The old Apostle Peter writes to the believers as he feels the closeness of his own death. Peter is extremely concerned that the believers know with certainty the gospel of Jesus Christ—the words of the disciples concerning His teachings and ministry were absolutely true. Peter tells the believers that the apostles and ministers of the gospel did not come to them with “cleverly devised fables” when they told them of the power and coming of the Lord Jesus.
