The faithful support, gracious feedback, and kind encouragement have absolutely made my blogging journey incredible! The verse from Zechariah 4:10 NLT has been my anchor over these last four years—“Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin…” I pray this verse would breathe life and speak peace into your soul today, too. Anytime God calls us to step out in faith and begin something new, it can feel daunting. Whether it’s a diet and exercise change for better health, a move that uproots you from everything you’ve known, or a job change that has you in unchartered territory,

Ingredients For the Soup: • 1 lb of smoked ham hock • 1 cup of dried black-eyed peas • 1 cup of chopped carrots • 1 cup of diced celery • 1 cup of chopped onion • 3 cloves of garlic, minced • 6 cups of chicken broth • 1 bay leaf • 1 tsp of dried thyme • Salt and black pepper to taste • 2 cups of chopped collard greens (or substitute with kale or spinach)

In a large pot, combine the smoked ham hock, black-eyed peas, chopped carrots, celery, onion, and minced garlic. Pour in the chicken broth, add the bay leaf and dried thyme. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to a simmer. Cover the pot and let it simmer for about 1 to 1.5 hours, or until the black-eyed peas are tender and the ham hock is falling off the bone. Remove the ham hock from the pot, shred the meat, and discard the bone and fat. Return the shredded ham to the pot, and season the soup with salt and black pepper to taste. Stir in the chopped collard greens and simmer for an additional 10-15 minutes until they are tender.
Making the Cornbread (optional): Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Grease a 9x9-inch baking pan. In a mixing bowl, combine the cornmeal, flour, baking powder, and salt. In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk, vegetable oil, and egg. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. Pour the cornbread batter into the greased pan and bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

The gifts given have all been folded in drawers, hung in closets, or returned for a different size. I started to write in my journal every year what we all received from one another. As the years now pass, so has my memory to remember who gave what to me. But with all that, there is still one gift I cherish every year. There is one gift I never have had to remember who

Proverbs 4:7 KJV, “Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom; and with all thy getting get understanding.” 1. Take Stock – Write down three things you are grateful for each day. 2. Hit the (cold) showers – Exposing your body to lessthan-comfortable temperatures is an anti-aging tactic that also improves mood and boosts immunity. 3. Get Moving – Exercise improves your health, lifts your mood, and lengthens your life. 4. Floss every day – Scientists believe harmful mouth bacteria can enter the bloodstream, causing inflammation and other damage. 5. Get fresh air every day – Going outside, especially in green space, is an easy way to boost your well-being and mental state. 6. Take a breather – A simple way to feel happier, reduce stress, and raise your energy is to take short timeouts throughout the day to focus on your breath. 7. Beware of Actively Managed Investments – Lowfee index funds track the returns of an investment index, such as the S&P 500, and they cut your risk because you're investing in hundreds of stocks instead of just a few. 8. Know why you get up – Have a sense of purpose and you'll live longer. This positive mindset seems to be as beneficial as exercising regularly and not smoking. 9. Volunteer – Volunteering regularly (at least once a month) is associated with increased life satisfaction and lower rates of depression, and it may reduce early mortality rates by 22 percent. 10. Start your day earlier – Wake up around 6 a.m. every day to read, exercise, and accomplish daily goals

Get enough rest – Lack of quality sleep zaps your energy, ups your stress level, hurts your memory, weakens your immune system, and makes you more anxious and depressed. 16. Eat plants – Eat real food! 17. Buy memories, not stuff – You'll derive more happiness from spending money on experiences rather than on physical objects. 18. Skip one meal a day – Eat less, cutting calories significantly protects against diseases. 19. Make money while you sleep – If you have some cash saved up, consider investing in assets that will bring in some passive income, such as rental property, ATM's in barber or beauty shops, etc. 20. Don’t give up - Be patient with yourself. These things take a lifetime to cultivate. The rewards make life better though. Keep trying!

haonia, an American Kennel Club registered American Staffordshire terrier, celebrated her 2,000th pet visit with Hamilton Medical Center (HMC) a few months ago. Shaonia now has almost 2,100 visits and 2,970 volunteer hours as a therapy dog. Davis says she and her dogs participate in the program to make people smile and feel better. “When you walk into a patient room and they see the pups and their faces light up, you can’t get a better feeling than that,” Davis says. “When we are walking down the halls, we often hear nurses say, ‘SHAONIA!’ and they come up to her to get their love. Their reactions and interactions with Shaonia are heartwarming to me and make me feel very blessed we are able to do therapy dog visits.” Therapy dog visits tend to remind patients of their own dogs. “It is always very emotional when we visit, and the people start telling us about their dogs,” says Davis. “They share memories they have of their dogs that have crossed over the Rainbow Bridge or the dogs in their life now – the ones that are at home waiting for them. I love to watch the pleasure they have and the way it helps lighten up their days when they see Shaonia or any therapy dog.” One of the most memorable experiences that Davis says she’s had was when she and Shaonia were in a local store, and a lady came up to them. The lady told them that they had visited her mother at HMC earlier that month and that her mother was really scared about being there. “We came in for a visit, and after we left, she said that her mother could do nothing else but talk about Shaonia,” says Davis. “She said her mother was more relaxed after the visit. She said she wanted to thank us that day but wasn’t able to leave her mother’s side.” HMC’s Therapy Dog Program is part of its plan to treat the whole patient. The therapy dogs visit with patients, families, and associates throughout the campus including patient rooms, the Peeples Cancer Institute, the Emergency Department, the medical intensive care unit, and even administrative offices. Other volunteers in HMC’s Therapy Dog Program include Jill Durden with Quigley, an Australian shepherd,

and Janie DuBose with Buck, a terrier mix. Researchers and experts agree that pets excel as therapeutic agents in the healing process and serve as a strong antidote to the depression that is often associated with acute medical diagnoses. Studies have shown that patients and family members who interact with a therapy dog experience a decrease in blood pressure and stress levels. A visit from a therapy dog team helps break the daily routine, increases overall emotional well-being, and stimulates the mind in compelling ways. Therapy dog visits offer benefits that include bringing joy and laughter, taking a person’s mind off of aches, pains and worries, encouraging the sharing of emotions and stories, providing an opportunity to communicate with others, lowering stress levels, and rekindling fond memories of a person’s own pet. “When anyone pets the dogs, they are releasing oxytocin, the feel-good hormone, into their body and also into the dogs,” says Davis. “Shaonia is addicted to being a therapy dog. I have been very blessed to have Shaonia come into my life. To be able to share her with people has been another blessing. “We both look forward to visiting with more people and hope to have many more years participating in the program.”
