Calm In The Storm

eflecting recently on the varied conversations of

Don’t just Save— Remember to Invest MONEY MATTERS

t seems that most financial advice boils down to this: “spend less, save more.” Very good, but don’t stop there. Once you have saved enough money in an “emergency fund” to cover three to six months of expenses, you really need to stop “saving” and start “investing.” There is a huge difference. For instance, if you keep saving money every month and letting the money languish in your checking account or savings account, you will actually lose money to inflation over time as the buying power of your monthly shrinks year after year. Instead, once your cash emergency fund is in place, you should begin investing your surplus money every month in order to make it grow and outpace inflation. Otherwise, you’re just treading water or even losing ground, financially speaking. So where and how to invest? For starters, if your employer offers a “match” for contributing to your 401k or 403b retirement plan at work, you should definitely invest enough money to get the match. Never turn down “free money” in these situations. Once you’ve maxed out your “match” with your employer retirement plan (or if they don’t offer a match), create your own Roth IRA account and contribute to that every month, usually 10%15% of your monthly salary is an excellent goal. I highly recommend using Vanguard your Roth IRA; they are the world’s largest and least expensive mutual fund company, and just a quick online application will set up your Roth IRA in no time. (FYI, I make no money for recommending Vanguard funds; I truly believe they are the best option for most investors, and my wife and I have accounts there, as well as all three of our children).

Here’s the next crucial detail—although you are now investing money each month into your employer retirement plan or your Roth IRA account, you still must choose where your money will be invested. Here’s a real “horror story” I heard recently. A man had been investing regularly every month in his 401k plan at work, putting away roughly $140,000 over twenty years. As he approached his target retirement date, he (finally) contacted his 401k company to see how much money he had in there. He figured he should have roughly $400,000 after twenty years of investing in the stock market using mutual funds inside his 401k plan. But to his horror, he found out that he never directed his retirement contributions to go into stock mutual funds. Instead, his money had languished in a money-market account for two decades, earning almost nothing. Now, at retirement, he had less than half the amount of money he was counting on. He had to postpone retirement for at least another decade, well into his seventies. Moral of the story— contributing to your retirement accounts isn’t enough by itself. You must select “where” you want your investments to be directed. Stock market funds? Bond funds? Real estate funds? Be sure you take one more crucial step by choosing where and how you want that retirement money invested. Otherwise, the retirement plan will simply “save” your money in a very low-interest account, and you’ll have less money than you could have if you had taken more risk by investing in stock mutual funds. So don’t just “save”— remember to “invest” for growth. Remember the Parable of the Talents in the Gospels? The master (God) was very upset with the man who merely “saved” his talent by burying it in the ground. The other two men invested their talents (money), and they were richly rewarded.

alton Heating and Air Conditioning started back in 1991 with honesty, integrity, and a big dream. Kim Morgan built the company from the ground up with little to no money and no credit. Growing the business was a slow process that began by making lifelong customers one at a time. Kim would sale a job, install it and run service calls all by himself with the goal of doing the very best for every customer,

every time. This mentality along with honesty and hard work each day would eventually result in a growing customer base and a reputation he could be proud of. Now 28 years later Kim Morgan still owns the business which continues to experience growth and success. His family makes up a large part of the Dalton Heating and Air Conditioning team. His two sons, Isaiah and Jeremiah, work on the
sales team and they also oversee the installation of the products. One of his nephews is the service manager, one nephew is a lead installer, and his niece is their secretary. He considers every employee of Dalton Heating and Air to be part of the family. Kim believes that hard work and honesty are only part of the recipe for success and that it wouldn’t be possible without the community. He also believes that starting a company from scratch,

s we bid 2019 farewell and welcome 2020 in, we can all look back and remember the many things we are leaving behind
in 2019. I’m sure some of us have gained and some lost. Lamentations 3:22-23: “Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.” As the new year comes, we can expect new beginnings and claim what the Lord gave us in His word. 2 Corinthians 5:17 says, “Therefore if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come; the old has gone, and the new is here.” Rejoice in that and keep the faith. We can flip though the pages of 2019, look back, smile, and embrace 2020 as a welcome and refreshing restart. God continually makes us new every moment of every day and brings a new beginning that we can embrace. This new year in 2020, stay focused and get a support team as we have our church. Stay in touch with God’s people and become a special part. We all need and desire to have close friends that we can count on. Don’t let the enemy distract you from what God has for you. We are His people; we can be blessed and stay encouraged. Hear that still small voice inside of you. If you get confused about

Just Life alking in the world we live in today, we never know whom to trust. People hide things, treat you horribly, and don’t take care of their own responsibilities. Is it the culture that we live in that has taught people to act this way or just one’s certain raising? I was raised in a Christian home and sheltered from the world for many years, I would say. I grew up and moved out not knowing what was out there. People’s values were not all the same as the ones I was accustomed to. Relying on God was something I came to learn was the only thing that we can be sure of. In a marriage that was lost from the start, I had and raised three kids. I raised my children with the same values I was raised with, but they do not all still hold those values to this day. The problem we as parents are having is that society is placing values in the heads of our children. It is something that parents are having a hard time controlling. I am remarried to a spouse with a set of children I have helped to raise. I never really paid attention to the outside 32 // January 2020
influences and what games they play in our homes until the present. It is a constant struggle fighting drugs, alcohol, and many other profane attributes the world throws our way. I lost my dad last year, and I often remember he would say to me that in the end times, we

here is your treasure? Did you know that Jesus spoke about money five times more than any other subject? Here is
eternal impact. Some people to consider when it comes to wealth and godliness: Abraham (the wealthiest man of his time) is called the friend of God. Zacchaeus (chief tax collector=loaded) gave half his possessions to the poor. The Good Samaritan (social reject) wrote a blank check for a Jew. Some people to consider when it comes to wealth and ungodliness: Solomon (the wealthiest man on earth in his time) was pulled away from God by his wives. Ananias and Sapphira (wealthy church members) lied to God. The rich young ruler (pious and religious) walked away sorrowful. Earthly wealth is not a sign of godliness. It is a test of godliness. Are you generous as our Heavenly Father is, who loves to give? Do you hold what you do have with an open hand? If Jesus sacrificed everything to bring us back to God, why would we not be outrageously generous with the blessings He gives? Remember: Being a good steward is 80% behavior and 20% head knowledge. Luke 16:20: “One who is faithful in a very little is also faithful in much, and one who is dishonest in a very little is also dishonest in much.”

I think maybe it’s because we don’t have the proper attitude toward our things. I would venture to say that one of the most misunderstood statements of Jesus concerning money is the following: Matthew 6:19-20: “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.” Most people would say this confirms exactly what he told the rich young ruler about “go sell all you have and follow me and you will have treasure in heaven.” People would say more specifically that this confirms that we must live like paupers or be “poor” in order to serve Christ. Not true. God isn’t against your having things. He is just against things’ having you. He is saying to not hoard up wealth or heap up things on this earth as if you are prepping for doomsday. He is saying don’t “pile it up” for the sake of piling it up. That would be the root of greed, which produces all sorts of evil. Instead, use your wealth to spread the Gospel. Do business with an eternal perspective. Invest your money
with an eternal perspective. I do not mean that wealth will last for eternity but that it will facilitate the spread of the Gospel for winning souls to Christ, which will have an

My New Year’s Want List o you make a New Year’s resolution list? I’m not doing the “exercise, eat healthy, lose weight” list this year. I always had good intentions, but life got in the way. Besides, I like to eat what I like to eat, and there goes that list! This year, I want to laugh more, love more, live more, and enjoy more. 1. This year, I want my husband and me to go camping at least one weekend per month. It gives the two of us time to rest, talk, and make some memories. 2. I want to spend a whole day with my sister doing something fun. We need to take the time and make our relationship a priority. 3. I want a mother/daughter trip. I want a mother/son day too! I want time to talk to them about life, love, family, hopes, fears, children, and everything else that matters to us. 4. I want to take my grandson someplace fun for a “grand-date.” We used to keep him regularly, and I miss spending significant time with him. And I want some one-onone time with each of my precious “little” grandsons! 5. I want to do girl trips with my besties. Several of us talked about going to a friend’s lake house: we’re going! For many years, two of us September babies took a “birthday” trip to celebrate—that is going to be a priority this year as I celebrate my 64th birthday—but I won’t tell how old she will be this year! 6. I want to become a better servant and look for a way to help someone every month. There are many opportunities to do this—volunteering, spending time with someone who doesn’t have family nearby, donating to those in need, and sharing my time, attention, energy, and heart with someone who needs it. 7. I want to read more and watch TV less. There are few quality shows on anyway! 8. I want myself and others to put down the cellphones and talk. Too often, when we are with family or friends, I only see the tops of their heads.

9. I want to learn to cook some new dishes and share those with friends. I want to try new foods and see what I’ll like. 10. I want to grow something. My husband loves to raise a few vegetables, and I can help him. One of my fondest childhood memories was helping in my grandparents’ garden with my cousins. I loved the taste of “fresh-from-the-garden” okra, corn, squash, and beans. But more than that, it was the time I spent

Speed Limits hat is it about posted speed limits that bother people? Or, better yet, why do folks feel they do not apply to them: that they are merely a suggestion? And why are they so apologetic when they get caught and get a “blue-light special”? Now, I must confess that I may sometimes find that I have worn my heavy shoes some days, particularly when I get out on the interstate and mere survival requires that I keep up with the flow. But regularly, I pull out of my driveway with no cars within a quarter of a mile, accelerate to the posted speed, and from out of nowhere, a neighbor is running late to drop the kids off at school or get to the office, and suddenly, I become the bad guy—at least, I must be the bad guy, as evidenced by the friendly gestures and mouthed words sent my way. I applaud all the efforts our officers give to make us safe, including stopping some who apparently received their driver’s training from NASCAR. It seems that when they are presented their “certificate of recognition,” they are not so much repentant for their breaking the law as they are that they got caught. Speed limits are posted for our safety and good. Laws are written to give guidance to an order with which we should live. Those who enforce the laws are instruments of maintaining a safe society for everyone. There are laws of science and nature. For the most part, these are givens within our world that provide the order with which we live. Breaking any of these laws, too, has consequences. Fall off a ladder and one will soon find that two laws of nature were broken: and now, perhaps you are, too. God, too, has given us laws. These were not given to limit us or to break us. They were given in the hope that

those who follow them will find God’s original plan of love and grace. Unfortunately, we each think that “a little over the limit” won’t really matter: unless we get caught. The prophet Micah wrote, “He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”
Jesus, the Christ, when quizzed about the greatest commandment (or law), said, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’” Yes, there is other guidance Holy Scripture gives us, and we should live as it instructs. But I would surmise that if more of us would just follow these two, this world we live in would be a much better place. (And perhaps we wouldn’t be speeding through life and missing the best parts!)

Butternut Squash Soup by Pam Wattenbarger
T
here’s nothing like a comforting bowl of soup on a cold winter’s day. Smooth, creamy, and satisfying, the recipe can be prepared using fresh or canned
butternut squash. Cooking the squash is the hardest part. Once it’s done, the rest of the recipe comes together in around 30 minutes. This recipe is naturally gluten free. It can be made vegetarian by substituting vegetable broth for the chicken broth. If you prefer a vegan recipe, simply swap the butter for non-dairy spread.
Ingredients • 2 butternut squash, halved, with pulp and seeds removed • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter • 1 medium onion, diced • ¼ cup fresh rosemary leaves, minced • 2 cups chicken broth (can substitute an equal amount of veggie broth) • 1½ teaspoons salt • ½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

Instructions 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. 2. Place squash halves in 9x13 baking pan. Add ½ cup water to baking pan (or enough that the sides of the squash are immersed in water, but the tops are not covered with water). 3. Bake squash 50 minutes or until done. Remove the squash from the oven and allow to cool. 4. Scoop the insides of the squash into a food processor or blender. Puree for 30 seconds. If not fully pureed, pulse for another 30 seconds. 5. Add salt and pepper to taste. Set the squash mixture aside. 6. Melt butter in a Dutch oven, large saucepan, or stockpot over medium heat. 7. Add the onion and minced rosemary. Saute for three minutes or until the onion is translucent. 8. Add the squash and chicken broth to the onion mixture. Bring to a boil. 9. Reduce heat to low and allow soup to simmer for 15 minutes for flavors to blend, stirring occasionally.

I Know True Strength ecember 14, 2006. A week after my younger daughter was born, my world was turned upside down: very bleak and filled with hopelessness. I was secured to a hospital bed and in a coma. I later learned that I had a hemorrhagic stroke that changed my life. What I thought then was for the worst. I had no use of my right side and could not speak or do the little movements that I once took for granted. My emotions were even adnominal. I would laugh at things that were not meant to be laughed at. All I wanted to do was lie in that hospital bed and cry, but tears would never roll down my face and my eyes never got water: only laughter. I wanted to die! The whole time I was in the hospital, my pastors would come visit with me, pray over me, and inform me of how things were going with my children. While they were doing this, I was screaming in my head and talking back with them, but words would not come out. One day, I stopped fighting the hospital staff; they felt it was safe enough for me not to be restrained to the bed. My pastors came to pray over me, and that day, I was not yelling at them in my head; I actually agreed with them when they prayed over me with so much peace. Hours later, my first words were “kids” and “help”; the next thing I know, all the yelling I was doing in my mind was coming out my mouth. Tears were flowing like a river down my face, and with a lot of prayer and every type of therapy, it was time for me to go home. The rehabilitation clinic was giving me all the medical equipment needed for someone who could not walk or keep steady balance. I turned it all down and only had the wheelchair I was wheeled out in. Once I got home, that wheelchair stayed outside. Everyone around me thought I was crazy. Three days after being home, at night, my baby started crying. Not thinking about my right side and the fact that I couldn’t really walk, I jumped up and attempted to go to her, but of course, I fell. I sat on the floor of my hallway crying, “Why me! Lord, just kill me now.” My daughter let out what seemed to be a cry but as if she was choking at the

same time. I stopped saying, “Lord just kill me now,” and started saying, “Jesus! Jesus! You said I can do all things through you who strengthens me.” The next thing I knew, I felt someone on my right and left sides helping me up and off the floor: walking me to where my daughter was. 1. Psalm 46:1: “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”
2. Psalm 84:7: “They go from strength to strength: each one appears before God in Zion.” 3. Isaiah 40:29: “He gives power to the weak, and to those who have no might He increases strength.” Last but not least, “‘My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore, most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me” (2 Corinthians 12:9). I am no longer feeling deserted, discouraged, aggravated, and annoyed. Every day is still a battle, but it is a battle I fight with joy, driving my children here and there plus working two jobs, all while helping my son in college.
