Attending church regularly is important. A wise pastor once preached a sermon on the subject without saying a word. I’d

Guessing the reason for his pastor's visit, the man welcomed him, led him to a big chair near the fireplace and waited. The pastor made himself comfortable but said nothing. In the grave silence, he contemplated the play of the flames around the burning logs.

After some minutes, the pastor took the fire tongs, carefully picked up a brightly burning ember and placed it to one side of the hearth all alone. Then he sat back in his chair, still silent. The host watched all this in quiet fascination.

As the one lone ember's flame diminished, there was a momentary glow and then its fire was no more. Soon it was cold and "dead as a doornail."

Not a word had been spoken since the initial greeting.

Just before the pastor was ready to leave, he picked up the cold, dead ember and placed it back in the middle of the fire. Immediately it began to glow once more with the light and warmth of the burning coals around it.

As the pastor reached the door to leave, his host said, "Thank you so much for your visit and especially for the fiery sermon. I shall be back in church next Sunday."

The Smartest Person in the Room MONEY MATTERS WITH DR. ANDREW LEE

Dr. Andrew Lee is professor of English at Lee University. He also serves as a coordinator for Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University. He and his wife Esmerelda have three children.

T

here’s a maxim I’ve heard repeated a lot lately on various financial podcasts where wealthy men and women share their secrets to success. Many of these highly successful people have said, “You never want to be the smartest person in the room.” In fact, some of them have stated the point even more emphatically: “If you look around and realize that you’re the smartest person in the room, get out of that room immediately!”

So that got me thinking—what exactly does this mean?

When we think of certain people as being “smart” due to their high academic achievement, what do we really mean? Although we often think of “smart” as referring to IQ or innate intelligence that one is just “born with,” that’s rarely the truth if we really think about it.

More often than not, what we really mean is that these “smart” people are “diligent” and “disciplined” with their time and with their choices. One of these choices to “be smart” involves constant learning—acquiring more knowledge through continual reading and other education in order to expand how much we know. But it doesn’t stop there. To be really “smart,” it’s crucial to then make smart choices based on this knowledge we’ve acquired. In other words, our choices are how we prove that we’re really “smart,” and our choices determine whether others will think of us as being “smart.” As Forrest Gump reminds us, “Stupid is as stupid does,” and it’s equally true that “smart is as smart does.” We’re smart if we make smart choices. The Bible tells us in James 1:22—“Put the word into action.”

Since this is a money column, what does it mean to be “smart” with money? And what would the “smartest

person in the room” look like in terms of being “money smart?” We think of certain people as “money smart” based primarily on two factors: (1) they know a lot about money and finances (knowledge) and then (2) they have achieved financial success by putting this knowledge into practice (investing, getting out of debt, budgeting expenses). Again, being “smart” with money means making wise choices with money, putting our financial knowledge into action. Knowledge and action are clearly different, and the latter is much harder than the former.

We all “know” how to lose weight, but it’s a challenge to actually do it. We all “know” we should spend less money than we make so that we can avoid debt and invest for the future, but it’s a challenge to actually do it. Doing it (and not just knowing it) is what makes us truly “smart.”

So, why do all these successful, wealthy people on the financial podcasts choose to leave the room when they discover they are the “smartest people in the room?”

The answer is found in another maxim which these same successful people have found to be true, which is this: “We become the average of the five people we spend the most time with.” Think about that. If you are the most disciplined, most knowledgeable, and most diligent person in your “friend group,” how will you be able to continue to grow and learn from those around you? If your friends all enjoy “shopping therapy” on a weekly basis, how will you ever get out of debt? If your friends’ social time always involves eating out and spending money, how will you be able to invest for the future? If you’re the “money-smartest person” in your “room,” maybe it’s time to relocate.

hen we think of a frontline we often think of those in uniform. They are those closest to the enemy, fighting to protect something. We admire their bravery and boldness.

As men, we naturally find ourselves longing for that frontline experience. We want that excitement, and that pride, and responsibility. We want to experience the rush of a win.

Not all of us take to the Army for that experience.

Many men take on that frontline challenge in the form

of careers, family matters, and spiritual leadership.

Some men take it all on! Kudos to those men who take on a challenge by the shoulder and look it in the eye. It is honorable and exciting to take a role of accountability and ownership. It fulfills this void of purpose we perpetually attempt to fill. While it is certainly exciting being on the frontline, it also brings immense pressure.

This pressure is so intense at times that some men leave it all behind. They leave their families, their work, and the uncertainty of it all. As we find ourselves in these places of high responsibility, it is easy to forget

that there is one that goes even in front of us. Earlier this week I was talking with a friend about a relationship issue I was having. I named all the things I had done in efforts to rectify this issue, to no avail. This friend looks right at me and says, “Well, have you prayed about it?” To be transparent, I got irritated in that moment.

My pride flared up and I wanted to say “Now what good will that do here? I’m responsible for this. I need something done now!” But then the spirit came over me and showed me something.

Men, we are not the true frontline in our lives. In John 15:5, Jesus explains that he is the true vine and we are the branches. He says, “Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing.” Too easily, we forget what our order of responsibility is. God goes before man. As leaders, we will have responsibilities, and people may come to us as their frontline, but as leaders, our frontline is God. His ways are higher than our ways and His thoughts higher than our thoughts.

As we stay close to God, we can give Godly direction. God’s productivity and protection are unrivaled.

For those men who have abandoned their hopes out of the fear of failure or not knowing what to do, I want you to know that there is one who goes before us. If we will just acknowledge him, he will set our paths straight (Proverbs 3:6). James 1:5 says our God is generous and will grant you the wisdom you ask for. It is never too late to ask God for wisdom and turn around as Samson did. You are loved.

My immediate reaction was, "NO. I'll die first." That was

I use Gala apples for the sweetness • ¾ cup sugar • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour • ¾ teaspoon ground cinnamon • ¼ teaspoon salt • 1 tablespoon lemon juice Preheat oven to 425°F. Place 1 pie crust in ungreased 9-inch glass pie plate and set aside.

In a large bowl, mix sugar, flour, cinnamon and salt. Gently stir apples and lemon juice into the dry mixture until they are completely covered. Spoon into the pie plate and top with the second crust. Gently slit the top crust with the design of your choice. Brush with an egg wash.

love baseball and hot dogs and I drive a Chevrolet Trail Blazer but apple pie was never on my preferred list; I never ate it and, although I am an avid baker of cakes, pies and cookies, this was a particular pie I had never made.

Until my name changed to Nana! Those of you who are in this select group of blessed women know that our desire to meet every request and/or demand of a grandchild is pretty much paramount to requests from any other source. One day (just out of the blue) my first-born granddaughter suggested that I make her an apple pie. Of course, since her wish was my command, off to the store I went to purchase apples.

I didn’t ponder if I could make an apple pie because all that I was compelled to do was grant the wish of someone I loved and who loved me.

This memory reminds me that when I first met Jesus, my name changed to Redeemed. How much greater, then, should be my desire to do whatever He asks of me? I am sure that most of us become complacent in our service to Him sometimes. Going to church, giving to the Kingdom work, living a life that we want to be pleasing in His sight, each of these things come pretty naturally to us in our Christian walk. But how willing are we to do more, something we have never done before or something that is not common to our daily service expectations of ourselves? If the Spirit tugs at our hearts to walk up to a total stranger and declare that Jesus loves him and wants to become the Redeemer of his soul, do we just do it or do we ponder on it. If we feel an urge to double our Sunday morning offering, do we stop and think or do we just do it because we are being asked by someone we love and who loves us, someone who died for us! I baked the pie out of a heart of love and I want to always do what I feel my Redeemer is asking of me with a love that is greater than any love we will ever know.

“That I may come unto you with joy by the will of God, and may with you be refreshed” (Romans 15:32).

roverbs 22:6 says, “Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.” *Cue “Pomp and Circumstance” Your child’s full name is called. He or she walks across the stage, receiving a diploma. The tassel is moved. You have reached the parenting finish line* One of those things doesn’t belong!

Our two older boys have graduated from high school and are in college. My husband and I had no

idea how much parenting we would do with them away from home. We didn’t actually think we were done raising them and they would never need us, but we were unprepared for what that meant. This is serious grown-up parenting! We have encountered issues we never imagined and said prayers we never expected. What is some practical advice for this new parenting phase?

First, we work together as a family. We have listened, texted, emailed, and offered advice. We, as parents, have spent hours discussing our sons. We have read Scripture. We have been thrilled or sad. We have hoped, prayed, crossed fingers, and knocked on wood!

We have tried to be current and adaptable.

Also, we have sought balance. Your college-aged child has to learn to be independent! As parents, we have to back off and let our kids figure out how to take care of themselves. How much, or little, do I communicate with them? When both of my boys first left home, I warned them: I will be texting you every day for a week. I promised if they were patient, I would back off after that. They were, and I did. Since those early days, we are still careful. We don’t want to smother them, but we want them to know we have their backs. There is a fine line to walk, and I want to walk it like a Flying Wallenda on a high wire!

Finally, most importantly, your child needs to know that you are available. It’s humbling how much college-aged children still want and need affirmation and guidance from their parents. If I want my sons to know I’m thinking about them, I send a short text, maybe a funny meme or just “what’s up?” If I know they’ve had a test or project, I use that to check in. I keep actual phone calls to a minimum, maybe once a week, but whatever works for you (we have boys; girls may be different!). I rarely ask them to come home; I leave that up to them other than holidays. I send Scripture, pertinent devotionals, and tell them I am praying for them!

Most importantly, we wait for them to come to us.

That’s not easy! But they do. They come to us because they know they can. They know we are here. We have to be patient; they have to be ready.

Grown-up parenting, it’s not just the kids who grow, it’s the parents too! There’s no parenting finish line; we will always be their parents!

t’s time again for New Year’s resolutions as people clamber to gyms around the world with hopes of getting in better shape. What will set those who succeed apart from those that fail? Benjamin Franklin stated that, “failing to plan, is planning to fail,” and in this lies the realization that most people don’t plan for success. So let’s look at a few ways to plan to give you an edge on fitness success.

Product vs. Process One of the most important strategies in planning for success is to develop a set of process goals, as this may be even more important than striving for a certain product goal. A product goal is the ultimate “what” you hope to accomplish. It may be to lose ten pounds, bench press your body weight, or run a six minute mile.

Process goals, sometimes referred to as a “system,” are the “how” you plan to get the job done. It is the daily process of practicing long-term habits that help move you toward ultimate product goal completion. As an example, for weight loss, the process goals or system might be to eat under 1200 calories a day, to skip lunch twice a week, or to cut out all snack foods. Product goals provide direction, but it is well-planned process goals (the system) that are needed to make progress. Focus on the process and let the product happen naturally.

Think Long Term Short term fitness goals, when they are product goals, may not lead to long term success. According to educator and author James Clear, once we meet our short-term product goals, many people stop practicing the behaviors that lead to goal completion. Basically you have run the race, finished the task, and now it is all over. This is apparent in the world of weight loss where statistics from The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition show that only about 20 percent of those that lose weight are successful at keeping it off. Why does this happen? In many instances there is no long-term vision, no commitment to the “long haul.” Clear states that success is often a result of long-term commitment to fundamental processes each day. Being healthy and fit is a lifestyle, not a sprint to the finish line. Look at the big picture; think long-term results.

Make it Measurable In order to know if the plan you have put forth to achieve a goal has been productive, there must be some way to measure your results. The ability to measure results holds us accountable and encourages steady progress. For example, if you wish to lose weight you may use a scale to determine the effectiveness of your efforts or if you hope to gain strength, a training log that has charted your monthly progress becomes a necessity. Popular strength coach Dan John sums it up by saying if you are making measurable progress, keep up the process; if not, stop and reassess the plan. The point is that to definitively say you have made progress or met a goal; you must be able to prove it.

In the words of Coach John, “There is no one more successful than the person striving for a worthy goal.”

Help yourself achieve fitness success by devising a clear path to follow. Plan for a new year, plan for a new you.

Kirk’s Cycle

n February 2019, Kirk’s Cycle will celebrate 27 years in the motorcycle industry and they want all to know how much they enjoy serving the Dalton community and the residents of Northwest Georgia and South Eastern Tennessee.

Tammy Jo Kirk was born into a family that has always had a passion for motorcycles. But what really makes Kirk’s Cycle Honda different from other power sports dealers or any other motorcycle shop can be summed up in one word: Respect.

Tammy says, “Respect and honor your past and where you come from, that’s what built you and made you who you are. Respect your present, your customers; they are who sustain you and your business family. Customer service seems to be a thing of the past and at Kirk’s Cycle, we are all about the service! Our customers are our family. Respect the future. The children and grandchildren of our customers and community of our friends and neighbors are our future and who our business will serve well into the future.”

Their moto and business philosophy at Kirk’s Cycle is that they “strive to be your power sports dealer for life”, and they mean it!

Tammy’s respect for her past comes from her family, especially her Dad, who is how she learned the motorcycle business and from whom she learned the skill and art of racing.

Tommy Joe, Tammy’s Dad started Kirk’s Cycle, a BULTACO motorcycle dealership and repair shop on the family property in the mid-1960s. Tammy started helping her dad in the shop as a young worker, uncrating and setting up brand new motorcycles and learning from her dad how to be a mechanic. Over time, Tammy herself developed the reputation of being one of the best local mechanics working on all different brands and sizes of motorcycles.

Tammy also inherited her love for racing from her dad.

Tommy Joe raced local Enduro (woods) and flat dirt track races and the whole family travelled to cheer him on. By the age of 9, Tammy decided it was time for her to race also.

It did not take very long for people to take notice of her natural talent for riding motorcycles and racing.

Tammy raced motorcycles professionally from 1979 to 1989. She was the first woman to earn a National Number ranking in the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) and was the first woman to make an AMA Grand National Main Event Final in Knoxville, Tennessee in 1984.

In 1992, Tammy decided to change gears a little and re-opened Kirk’s Cycle Shop, the name sake of her father’s shop, however at a new location on East Morris Street in Dalton. Tammy took her love for motorcycles and her mechanical expertise and combined them into a “motorcycle shop for ALL riders.”

While Kirk’s Cycle Shop was taking off with Tammy as the dealer principal, she also expanded into the world of NASCAR. She raced the All Pro Division, where she earned two Busch Pole Awards and was named the Most Popular Driver Award in 1996. Tammy was the first woman to race the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series. She won the prestigious Snow Ball Derby in Pensacola, Florida in 1993 and later raced the NASCAR Busch series. She officially retired from professional racing in 2003.

Tammy Kirk demonstrates her respect for the present daily by being instrumental in every aspect of Kirk’s Cycle Honda. She can be writing a service order, pulling parts from the parts department, consulting with customers on the sales floor, or in the service department rebuilding a motor; she does it all!

Kirk’s Cycle is a labor of love and a true passion for Tammy Jo Kirk. She is usually one of the first to arrive at work in the morning and the last to leave at night. And Tammy shares her love of the sport of motorcycles and her insight of how to work with people with her employees.

Those that work with her day in and day out have been with her for ten years or more.

Sandy Parson has been with Kirk’s Cycle for 24 years as the Parts Manager/Service Writer. Robert Bridges has been with Kirk’s Cycles for 13 years as a service technician.

Noah Hernandez has been with Kirk’s Cycle for 13 years as a service technician. JoAnn Estep has been with Kirk’s Cycle for 10 years in Sales, Finance, and Business Management. Jeremy Zwiger has been with Kirk’s Cycle in Sales for 5 years. Chase Duke has been with Kirk’s Cycle for 4 years as a Customer Service Tech.

Our customer’s children, grandchildren, and their friends are the future at Kirk’s Cycle. Customers who have been coming to Kirk’s Cycle for years are now bringing their grandchildren in to see Tammy and her sale’s staff to get their first dirt bike or ATV. Tammy once said in a magazine article in Cycle World magazine in 1984 that “I’ll end up doing something with motorcycles, because I love motorcycles, I love racing, and I’m gonna try to stay in the business.”

Gò0dNews for Teens Take Advantage of Your Teenage Years ased off of the title, you may be thinking this is just another article written by someone sharing their personal experiences of being a teenager and warning other teens not to waste their teenage years like they did. This is not one of those articles.

This is written by someone who took advantage of their teenage years and did not fit in because of it. If you are a teen reading this and feel lonely because this describes you, I hope you find encouragement in these words and remember not to give up.

Our culture constantly tells young people that since they are young, they should just party it up while they can. Whenever we see a young person in the news for doing something against common sense, our response is often, “Oh, they’re just kids.” I believe teens are capable of so much more than what our culture says they are.

A lot of my teenage years were lonely because I did not spend time going to the parties, trying to be in the popular crowd, or trying to be involved with the latest gossip or trends. Now that I am in my mid-twenties I see how my actions as a teenager set me up for what I am doing now. Your teenage years are the launch-pad for your twenties. I spent my time working hard in my studies, developing my communication skills, and spending time with God. Those habits have carried over with me.

As I have watched my generation grow older, I see that many of those who wasted their time in their teens are wasting their time in their twenties and will continue to do so for the rest of their lives if there is no change. Witnessing this fueled me to put together a saying for my kids ministry at the church where I am a children’s pastor. The kids and I often say together, “We are running towards the hard things because the hard

things build character and God is with us.” Use your teens to run towards the hard things.

What are some of those hard things? First, place your identity in God alone and not in other people or what you have. If you choose the latter, the result will be insecurity. Second, wrestle with your fears and face them dead on. This will build in you a habit of building

character and doing what most are unwilling to do.

Finally, surround yourself with people who are focused on what really matters. If you are around people who want to make a difference in the world, it is going to encourage you to take advantage of the little time we have on this earth. Listen to the words of Solomon, “Remember also your Creator in the days of your youth, before the evil days come and the years draw near of which you say, ‘I have no pleasure in them” (Ecclesiastes 12:1).

Cursed?

ome people believe that they are under a curse from God because of sins committed by their ancestors. In the Old Testament, God warned His people about the sin and consequences of worshipping idols. He said, “Thou shalt not bow down thyself unto them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me” (Deuteronomy 5:9). It is clear from this verse that the third and fourth generations

would suffer because of the sins of the first. Are you under a curse like this? The key to understanding the “generational curse,” is the phrase at the end of Deuteronomy 5:9 which says, “...of them that hate me.”

God does not promise to punish sins to the third and fourth generations of those who love Him. He promises to visit the sins of the fathers upon the third and fourth generations of those who hate God. Here’s how that works: If my grandfather hated God, then my father probably would have hated God because he would have been taught to do so. If my

father hated God, then I might also hate God. Therefore, the first generation was punished and the generation to follow, who decided to hate God, would be punished as well. The good news is you don't have to hate God! If your ancestors were not saved, you can still be saved.

If your forefathers did not live right, that doesn't mean that you cannot live right. If you grew up in a bad environment, it does not mean that you cannot have a Christian home or bring up your children the right way.

In the book of Ezekiel, the Jews asked why children should not be punished for their father’s sins. God responded: “…

When the son hath done that which is lawful and right, and hath kept all my statues, and hath done them, he shall surely live. The soul that sinneth, it shall die…” (Ezekiel 18:19b, 20a) The past does not have to dictate your present or future! If you read the history of the kings of Judah, you will find that one king was bad, and God would curse him. Then, his son would be a good king, and God would bless the kingdom. The Bible says, “But he slew not their children, but did as it is written in the law in the book of Moses, where the LORD commanded, saying, ‘The fathers shall not die for the children, neither shall the children die for the fathers, but every man shall die for his own sin’” (2 Chronicles 25:4). God's policy has always been personal responsibility. It is not someone else's fault that you are what you are. You can make your own decisions in life; and in this new year, you can choose to serve God and receive His blessings!

t the age of only 18 years old I had this big dream; I was going to have a big fancy wedding, marry the man I was in love with, and live happily ever after. You can only imagine how shattered my dream was years later when I found myself sleeping in a separate room from my husband, arguing with him all the time, and feeling unhappy and unloved. Yeah, that was not the kind of marriage I had in mind. And if my dream wasn’t shattered enough, it definitely was the day my husband told me our marriage was over and he wanted me to move out.

So I did what anyone with a shattered dream, a shattered life would do, I cried out to God. “In my distress I called to the Lord; I cried to my God for help. From his temple he heard my voice; my cry came before him, into his ears” (Psalm 18:6). And the Lord answered my cry and He told me to stay in my marriage and He would help me. It didn’t make sense to me at the time why God would want me to stay in a situation that seemed hopeless, damaged, broken, and too far gone, but I decided to trust in the Lord because I know that His ways and His thoughts are not like mine.

It’s been almost four years since that day, and I can say that I am so glad I listened to God. I went through a process of completely being transformed into the wife God desired for me to be, and I learned Biblical principles that helped save my marriage. I learned how to love unconditionally like Christ does. I learned how to forgive even when I didn’t think my spouse deserved my forgiveness. I learned that my husband needs to feel respected. I learned that I couldn’t spend all my time with my kids and neglect my marriage. And I learned that although I couldn’t change my husband, I could treat him in such a way that would motivate him to become a better man; “Wives, in the same way submit yourselves to your own husbands so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives” (1 Pet. 3:1).

That’s when my marriage full of shattered dreams starting feeling like a marriage I could have never dreamed of. I transformed, my husband transformed, and our marriage was completely restored to the point we often said, “This seems too good to be true.” And on top of all of that, God began to use me and our story to help other marriages all around the world. Now I speak at churches, women’s conferences, and in other countries. I’m living what seems like a dream life.

So if you’re reading this and you feel like your dreams are shattered, your life is shattered, and your marriage is shattered, I want to encourage you to not give up. I want to encourage you to cry out to God, to trust God, and to apply His word to whatever situation you’re facing. If you do that, I truly believe your life will also go from shattered dreams to a life you could never dream of. “In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps” (Prov. 16:9).

What about that person who may need a kind smile, a simple pat on the back, or even a refreshing hug? We need to walk into this New Year with expectations of helping others, encouraging others, and lifting others up. I dare say that by helping others, we will be much better off in our own lives.

I may not make any New Year’s resolutions, but I do plan on embracing this New Year and making the most of all of my opportunities.
