A New Focus for a New Year Your Horrible Attitude Could be What’s Distracting Your Heavenly Altitude

N

by Kenneth E. Ware

ow that the New Year has emerged, there will be new challenges to face and new choices to make. Last year’s challenges and choices are a thing of the past. What will be your mindset for this year? Life has a way of blurring your focus. With its many distractions and interruptions, if you are not focused, you could very easily get distracted within the first week. Just as a half inch off could divert the alignment of an entire building, one small distraction could deter your focus throughout the rest of the year. I. Focus on Your New Life in Heaven (Rev.21) — There are a number of things that John the apostle saw that would be no more. He saw that the pain, struggles, and sufferings in this life, will no longer be present in the new life in eternity. For instance, he said there will be No More devil (Rev. 20:10), No More sea (Rev. 21:1), No More death (Rev. 21:4), No More mourning, crying, or pain (Rev. 21:4), No More sin/sinners (Rev. 21:8, 27), No More sun and moon (Rev. 21:23), No More night (Rev. 21:25; 22:5), No More temples/worship centers (Rev. 21:22), No More curse (Rev. 22:3). Wow! The things of this life will not transition into your new life in heaven. II. Focus on Your New Home in Heaven (Rev.21:1-2) — Jesus Christ gave a revelation to John as he was banished to the Island of Patmos. In a vision, he saw some things that were not of this world. In his vision, he saw a new home in heaven filled with eternal bliss. The Lord revealed to him a New Heaven, a New Earth, and a New Jerusalem that

6 // January 2018

will be qualitatively different than the current heavens and earth. The New Jerusalem will descend from the new Heaven from God like a beautiful bride walking down the isle to meet her husband. This world is not your home. Your citizenship is in heaven (Phil.3:20-21). Your New Home in eternity will be full of beauty and splendor in all of God’s glory. Of course the New Life and the New Home in Heaven only awaits those, who, by faith, have trusted in the finished work of Jesus Christ. To the believer, like John, you are to set your mind on things above, not on things of the earth (Col.3:1-4). Have a new vision throughout this New Year. Focus on these two things that John received from Jesus Christ. Fix your eyes on Jesus this year. Stay focused on heaven this year.

God Bless You and Have a Happy New Year Kenneth E. Ware, M.M., M.A.B.S., M.Div., Member of Hamilton County Baptist Association and a graduate of Temple Baptist Seminary. He currently serves as senior pastor of New Sholar Avenue Baptist Church in Chattanooga, TN, and is a Professor of Theology at Grace Bible Institute.

Our Daily Journey with Life

E

by Samuel Bain

ach day we face what we consider to be life’s difficulties. Our daily journey leads us down the path of right or wrong. What we do with our life is our decision; we can hurt other kids’ feelings at school or we can give another person some of our lunch if they don’t have any. The word goodness is a great example of how we are supposed to live our lives. Being kids we often find ourselves wanting to watch TV or maybe just playing outside, but what we don’t usually do is give other kids compliments about how they look, how athletic they are, or how smart they are. The reason the word goodness is such a valuable word to live our lives by is because it was mentioned in the Bible as a fruit of the spirit in Galatians 5:22-23. Another fruit of the spirit is kindness, but the difference between the two is that goodness is what we show when we stick up for someone who is being bullied, kindness is what we show when we sit with someone at lunch because they don’t have any friends. They are both very important when we are talking about furthering God’s kingdom. However, being good is what we can do every day as kids because we can tell others about Jesus and we can help others in class. Another thing we can do as kids is to have courage in our everyday journey in life. Jesus said he would never leave us but he never said our life would be easy or perfect. We are going to face difficulties but we can choose to have courage and push through with our journey and overcome our problems. Don’t ever think you are too small, you are too young , or you aren’t good enough because Jesus said that we

8 // January 2018

are created in his image and that we are made exactly how he wants us to be; so, we can never be too small or too young and we are always good enough because the same God who created the universe created us. We are always able to do what God tells us and make right decisions and even when we mess up, God still forgives us because he loves us so much that he sent his only child to die on the cross for our sins. He loves us so much that he will forgive us of all our sins because his only son Jesus died for you and me. Making the right decision is more than doing what you think is right; it is doing what God thinks is right. When you don’t know what to do, then think about what Jesus would do because he never sinned. He is the only person who has ever or will ever live and be perfect. We can strive to be like him, although we never will be, because he is the perfect example. In the end, we are all going to make bad decisions but we can give glory to God, ask for forgiveness and we can learn from our mistakes and do exactly what God has called us to do and we can be who God wants us to be. God wants us all to have eternal life in heaven with streets of gold but the only way that we can achieve this is by confessing our sins and believing in our hearts that his son Jesus died for our sins. This is the only way to have eternal life in heaven. So during your daily journey with life make sure that you show goodness. Samuel Bain resides in Cleveland, TN. Buying a Business

A

by Ron Peterson

nother consideration for those desiring to be in business for themselves is to buy an existing business or purchase a franchise. So, let’s begin this discussion with a business textbook and legal term from the Latin—caveat emptor! Translated, that means, “let the buyer beware!” There are probably no stronger words that can be used when considering such an investment. If not, there is a good chance that you might be a financial victim. For several years preceding the purchase of my CPA practice, I was a business broker with a reputable group. A reputable business broker will always attempt to secure verifiable information from a seller. However, to avoid disappointment, there are two presumptions that a prospective buyer should always maintain, they are: 1. A seller of a business will always contend that their business is worth more than the analytics will support and 2. What you actually purchase will almost always have some major deviations from what “you were sold.” The latter will not necessarily be legal or recoverable deviations; it is simply differences in the eyes of the individual beholder. A word of absolute caution and truth—Never buy an existing business without a thorough review of the previous three years Federal income tax returns. That should also include a review by a trusted and experienced CPA or an established financial advisor. It is not uncommon to find that the owner of a small business which generates a lot of cash, may have converted some cash to personal accounts and it will not be reflected on tax returns. Again, make a purchase based only upon the Federal income tax numbers; or, you will be taking a very substantial risk against which there will generally be no legal recovery. Whether buying an existing business or investing in a franchise, it is of utmost importance that you take time to research the industry, understand its marketplace

10 // January 2018

potential and, if possible, schedule a conversation or two with an owner in a similar business who is 75 – 100 miles from your possible location. Franchise purchasing presents a completely different set of challenges. In my opinion, there are scores of dubious and questionable potential franchises and probably even more franchise marketers cut from the same cloth. If it sounds too good to be true, rest assured, it is! Have you ever noticed that two fast food franchises known for their biscuits are generally located on the side of major streets leading to work centers. The same holds true for doughnut/pastry shops. Conversely, fast food franchises featuring hamburgers, tacos and other similar items are located on the street side leading to residential

areas. Why? They’ve done their market research and know what locations produce results. Purchasing a franchise is a complicated process and one should retain both competent legal and financial counsel to comb through the documents. Proverbs 11:14 and 15:22 both speak to the security of counsel of many. Rely heavily on such. Caveat emptor, when purchasing or investing! Ron Peterson is a practicing CPA in Chatsworth who is also holds life and health insurance licenses. In addition to his many years of public accounting experience, he also served as CFO of several large organizations and as a corporate operational consultant.

Gò0dNews for Men

W

A New Year! by Dr. Greg Collins

ith every New Year comes the plan for us to put off the former year and embrace the New Year. It’s that time that comes once a year when we resolve to make changes in everything from how we eat, how we exercise, or even how much we will attend Church in the coming year. Change seems to be the prevailing word that surrounds the New Year’s celebration for most people. The funny thing is, when it comes to men, we are most resistant when it comes to change. As men, we fall prey to our tendencies. For a man to break old habits, it takes a real change in our perception and the way we think. Even if the change would be good for us, change is difficult. As men we often have a hunter/gatherer and provider mentality. We find that any change that doesn’t embrace that side of us, we are resistant to it. Either through fear or the thought of what is manly or not manly, men are resistant to change. Christ reminds us of a change that must take place in every believer. It comes to us from Apostle Paul in the twelfth chapter of the book of Romans. “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” (Romans 12:1-2)

12 // January 2018

When embracing a life in Christ, a change in the way we think, the way we perceive, and the thoughts and attentions of our mind becomes as necessary as breathing itself. It is impossible to be the man or the men God has called us to be, apart from embracing the mind of Christ. “Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 2:5) Of all the resolutions made during New Year’s, let us, as men, resolve that this year, we will embrace more and more the mind of Christ. It is this mindset in which we will see clearer the call of Christ on our lives. We will also see clearer the mission that Christ sets before us and we will see clearer the needs of others as we walk as Christ did. Recognizing the move of God and the needs of mankind, begs us to see, think, and respond as God does. This is the essential change that we all need, so that we may be instruments used by God and the help that the world needs so that they may see the heart of God lived out through each of us. The heart and the mind of Christ can be summarized by the seventh promise of Promise Keepers. A Promise Keeper is committed to influencing his world, being obedient to the Great Commandment (Mark 12:30-31) and the Great Commission (Matthew 28:19-20). Change. Go forth. Display the heart and mind of Christ. Dr. Greg Collins, THD, CSL, BRV, spent 22 years Pastoring in WV and GA. From TV and Media Ministry to large venues and crusades, Dr. Collins has ministered the gospel of Christ around the world. Currently serves as a Chaplain for Amedisys Hospice and is a member of Abba’s House Church in Hixson, TN.

Our Need for Others

H

by Chandlin Johnson

ave you ever heard someone say, “I’ve got God. I don’t need anybody else”? Well I have! Just the other day I had a conversation with one of my children about exactly that. My child proceeded to tell me that she didn’t need anyone else in her life but God, that she did not need people at all. Then she tells her brother that she did not need him or any of her other siblings, and she may need me sometimes. I took a deep breath and thought, “Lord, what do I say?” As I waited, I heard the Holy Spirit say, “Take her to the word.”

As I sat there, I thought, we are the body of Christ. I said to her, “We all need others, we were created that way.” She looked at me and said “No mom I don’t need nobody; maybe you I do, but I can make it by myself.” I took her to Romans 12:3-21 that states that we are all parts of one body, we are dependent upon one another. Each has a different function but all are needed in order to accomplish what God desires. We are to rejoice and exult one another, love one another as

14 // January 2018

members of one family, verse 5 in the Amplified Bible states “…and individually we are parts one of another {mutually dependent on one another}”. She still insisted she needed no one, I then told her that 1 Peter 4:8-11 states “And above all things have fervent love for one another, for love will cover a multitude of sins. Be hospitable to one another without grumbling. As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.” “You must remember that God uses us to carry out his plan and to show his grace and mercy and to bless us,” I told her. “We all need someone even if we don’t think we do. You my child,” I said, “could be the only Bible someone will read. Your life is also a book in the gospels; each life is to someone else. God uses people to meet people’s needs for growth.” I then told her that she may think that way, but it was a wrong thinking and she was no longer arguing with me but with God. We all need someone, and yes, God is sufficient and can met every need and want, He is love, healing, help, council, joy, and so much more; yet, He uses us to work though. Remember Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians12, “Don’t say to the hand, ‘I have no need for you.’” There also has to be accountability; we all must be accountable to someone in order to not be deceived by the enemy. I am glad that my child’s spirit was teachable and new understanding was gained. Chandlin Johnson is the single mother of 4 beautiful children. Her heart’s desire is to minister to women and to help those who are trapped in human trafficking. More than anything she enjoys spending time with Jesus and worshipping Him in all forms of the Arts.

A New Beginning by Diana Callihan

veryone knows that New Year’s day brings all sorts of celebrations. Balls drop, confetti is released, and fireworks are shot off. Let’s face it, seems like everyone loves New Years. It’s a day that indicates a new beginning. Myself, I have stayed up to watch that ball drop and fireworks go off, but I believe the one’s I remember the most are the ones that I have spent with my fellow believers in Christ. My family and I have prayed in the New Year on several occasions. To focus on the Lord while awaiting a New Year is very rewarding. However, sometimes it was difficult to keep my daughters up till midnight, but they certainly enjoyed the food afterwards! All of the celebrations of New Year come and go; a new year truly begins. However, as a believer, we need to be aware that every day is a new beginning with Christ. We don’t have to wait until a new calendar year begins! The Word of God says in Lamentations 3:22-23 (NLT) that “The faithful love of the Lord never ends! His mercies never cease. Great is his faithfulness; his mercies begin Ham Roll Ups- Ingredients afresh each morning.” Therefore each day can be a new 1 can of biscuits 1 cookie-baking dish beginning for each of us. How refreshing to know that Spray Butter each day His mercies begin again. Even if the world Approx. ¼ - ½ lb. of Ham (Your choice) doesn’t believe that we deserve it, our heavenly Father does. So, if we choose to stay faithful in our walk, we will not be disappointed, for the Lord will be with us each new day! Thus I would like to encourage everyone to embrace a new beginning with Christ each day. And if you are attending a New Year’s celebration gathering, I have a quick and easy recipe that I would like to share with you. It will be a favorite as it serves as a snack after you have rang in the New Year.

16 // January 2018

Directions

◊ Pre-heat oven to 375 degrees. ◊ Open can of biscuits and cut each one into ½ to ¼ sizes and flatten each piece. ◊ Spray lightly with butter. ◊ Cut the ham pieces into approx. 1.5 x 1.5 inch squares. ◊ Place one piece of ham into each sectioned biscuit and roll up. ◊ Make sure to pinch the dough together where it will stay together and spray lightly again with the spray butter. ◊ Place each piece on baking dish and bake for 15 – 20 minutes until golden brown. ◊ Let cool for about 15 minutes and put a decorative toothpick in each for a colorful display and easy way to serve.

Diana Callihan lives with her two daughters in Georgia. Her heart is to be an encouragement to all believers of Jesus.

Responsibility is an Important Lesson

I

by Brenda Dedmon

n our society today, we live in an “It is not my fault” world. Everyone wants to blame others for whatever situation they find themselves in. Few want to take responsibility for their actions. As a child, I had a pretend friend Charlotte. However, Charlotte got me in trouble! My name would be written on the wall in crayon. My mom asked, “Why did you write your name on the wall?” I said, “Charlotte did it.” I never got away with that excuse. She said, “Well, you and Charlotte get busy and clean it up.” I learned that my actions had consequences and I was responsible for the outcome. So how do you teach responsibility? There are some core values that you must instill in your child in their journey to begin this process. Your example is a very important way to teach these values. The values include: Generosity — the willingness to help others Honesty — be truthful and sincere Integrity — being true to your moral and ethical principles and values Kindness — being considerate and treating others well As you incorporate these values into your children, you will also be creating a sense of responsibility. As the New Year begins, it is a great time to develop ways children can be responsible for tasks which will require accountability from them. As you begin your list, remember to keep in mind ageappropriate things and use the word “responsibility” when

20 // January 2018

discussing the tasks. These should be done without it being on a “reward” system. There is a time and place for rewards but learning to be responsible should not be based on reward. The emphasis should be more on the consequences of not doing the task. Learning to take care of things helps a child develop a sense of responsibility for his actions. If your child is responsible for cleaning up after playing with his cars and he does not want to clean up, remind him that he will not be able to play with his cars anymore that day. If he chooses to not clean up, then you need to follow through and take away his cars for the rest of the day. The more you enforce the rules, the more likely he will clean up the next time. It is ultimately your child’s choice to not put a toy away. Sometimes parents do not want to let their children suffer, be sad, be angry; but if you always solve your child’s problems, then they will not learn to be responsible as they grow up. If your child forgets to put his homework in his backpack and you are tempted to take it to him, don’t! Hopefully, he will be more cognizant of remembering his responsibilities the next time. Teaching kids about responsibility is not easy, but what part of parenting is? It takes years and lots of practice. But you have to start sometime, so this New Year could be a great time to start. Rev. Brenda Dedmon is the Director of Children’s Learning Center at First Baptist of Dalton in Dalton, Georgia.

Love for Humanity

R

by Amy Poag

ichard Blackwelder might be the most fascinating man I have ever met. He was born in 1936 and as far as I know, still lives in Davidson, North Carolina. Richard is autistic and could tell you the weather on any date in his lifetime and as a train enthusiast, he could tell you all 77 stops on the Norfolk Southern railroad route from Davidson to Washington DC. Richard’s parents died when he was young and he was, in essence, a ward of the town of Davidson. The citizens of this little Norman Rockwell town made sure Richard had food and clothing; however, I still cringe at his living conditions. The stench of his property still burns my senses. On the few occasions I visited Richard to bring him food or maybe clip his nails, I always left thinking I should do more for him. I cannot even begin to describe his home. Thousands of newspaper clippings and cigarette butts were taped to his walls. There was usually a train book open in the middle of the floor and I would always find Richard there in the middle of the room—just standing.

but God used Richard in my life to bring awareness to the plight of the forgotten in the world. James does not mince his words when he shares with us that “Religion that is pure and undefiled before God the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction.” Focus on the Family includes the “Richards” of the world in its stance on the sanctity of life: We believe that human beings are created by God in His image. Therefore every person, from conception to natural death, possesses inherent dignity and immeasurable worth—including preborn children, elderly individuals, those with special needs, and others marginalized by society. Christians, then, are called to defend, protect, and value all human life. Richard relied on the goodwill of others and I often felt that “others” let him down. My son and I both have since had a similar dream about him. We both saw Richard young, vibrant, fully clothed, all of his teeth intact, no more bandages on a foot that would never heal, and no more conversations with no apparent audience. We both saw Richard running through a meadow at full speed. I believe we both saw Richard as God sees him now—a human being created in His image with “inherent dignity and immeasurable worth.” As I reflect back on my time with Richard, I am challenged to continue to keep my eyes peeled for the other “Richards” of the world who need us to tend to their afflictions. In the words of Christian singer, Jeremy Camp, we should all ask God to: “Give me your eyes for just one second Give your eyes so I can see

Over the years, I had many encounters with Richard. I loved to engage him in conversation. I would simply ask him a question and watch his brain go to work recounting the snow of ‘55 or the train wreck of ‘68. I would always fact check him after our discussions and he never let me down. I haven’t seen him in years,

Five Common Mistakes Beginning a Workout Program

A

by Megan Stockburger

fter January 1st, gyms everywhere flood with new members excited and determined to finally meet their New Year’s resolutions. They all make the same declarations that this time it’s going to be different, yet by spring the new faces begin to fade along with their resolutions. They lose interest, get discouraged, or get hurt. Let’s talk about 5 common mistakes made by people starting new exercise programs so you can begin your fitness journey with confidence. Expecting immediate results — Countless books, articles, and websites are dedicated to selling workout programs that are “fast” or “effortless.” If a claim seems too good to be true, then it probably is. Having unrealistic expectations can cause you to train with extreme intensity at first, which usually brings immense fatigue and soreness followed by a quick plateau in results. This is called overtraining and often leads to skipped workouts, feeling defeated, or quitting altogether. Stop measuring instant results and base your success on sticking to your program and modifying one behavior at a time. Forgetting about balance — When trying to become healthier, it can be difficult to juggle everything. Make sure you allow yourself time to enjoy the journey and balance the other things in life that are important. A healthy lifestyle is so much more than a number on a scale, the amount of weight you can lift, or

the miles you can run. Your physical health is vitally important to fulfilling your mission in life, but don’t neglect weightier matters like faith, family, or work in its pursuit.

24 // January 2018

Training only what you like — You may only perform the exercises you like, but that actually limits your potential gains. By neglecting your weak points, you set yourself up for injury due to muscle imbalances. Start with an assessment to determine your weaknesses and set goals that can set you up for success. There are several approaches to exercise you can take (some better than others), but make sure to choose a well-rounded one that won’t leave developmental gaps in your health or physique. Thinking exercise will compensate for a poor diet — Most workout routines are typically anywhere from 30-60 minutes. If those other 23 hours are filled with improper nutrition and inadequate rest, then your exercise routine will not be able to make up the difference. Our muscles are only capable of performing so much without burning out, so simply extending your exercise times won’t work either. Learn what is really in your food and what those nutrition labels mean. Nutritious diets that stay within appropriate calorie amounts and are balanced with proper strength and cardiovascular training are the best ways to lose fat and achieve ultimate health. Not admitting that you need help — Change is hard. Motivation doesn’t always come easily, and too often people try to take on the journey to a healthy lifestyle on their own. Find resources that you know are backed by real professionals. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and enlist some assistance! Accountability is a powerful tool that can help you succeed in your goals.

Whether it’s the support of a friend or family member to keep you on track, or a certified professional, don’t be reluctant to ask for help! The front-line staff members at Bradley Wellness Center are the pride and joy of higher management as they are the ones that truly build relationships with each of their members. They see their members daily and get to know them and build relationships with them. They bond with the members and the Bradley Wellness Center starts to feel like a second family. They also recognize that no matter who you are or what shape you’re in, walking into a gym can be nerve wracking. Everyone is nervous and everyone thinks everyone else is watching them or judging them. At the Bradley Wellness Center, that is not the case. If you are nervous about visiting or checking them out, give them a call and ask for Elise Perez, the marketing manager, and she will go to the class with you and introduce you to the instructors so you feel comfortable and at home. The Bradley Wellness Center is not just improving the lives of the members that join, but also people in the community. They offer kids programs and clinical programs that other organizations do not offer. They are also helping stand against Parkinson’s disease and help get patients back into their normal routines. They help in cardiac rehab to get these people back to a healthy state after a heart issue. They also support the local school activities and local

organizations’ fundraisers. They sponsor sports programs and partner with the REC Department. They are very active in Dalton and Whitfield and they want the community to know that they support their kids because their kids are the future of the Dalton and Whitfield communities. While their prices may be considered higher than other centers in the area ($42 a month for people over 12 years old and free for people 11 years or younger), they offer more than anyone in the community. Members are able to attend most classes, and use their facilities as much as they’d like with unlimited benefits. If you are an avid lifter, strong man, CrossFit person, yoga lover, busy mom who needs some “me time”, kids who want to get active, or you’re wanting to take that first step toward a better you, Bradley Wellness Center is the place to be. With Meal Prep classes starting up and their dietician on staff, it is easy to talk with her and get your New Year started off on the right foot. Their degree certified personal trainers will sit with you, plan with you, encourage you, and even cry with you to help you reach the better you. If you are interested in finding out more, visit Bradleywell.com or visit them on Facebook or Instagram. If you are one of the first 1,000 Instagram followers, you are entered to win a free year at the Bradley wellness Center. J

Let’s Rock 2018 for the Glory of God by Amy Wilson

C

“If you scrub your hands of sin and refuse to entertain evil in your home, you’ll be able to face the world unashamed and keep a firm grip on life, guiltless and fearless. You’ll forget your troubles; they’ll be like old, faded photographs. Your world will be washed in sunshine, every shadow dispersed by dayspring. Full of hope, you’ll relax, confident again; you’ll look around, sit back, and take it easy” — Job 11:14-18 MSG

hristmas is over; it’s a brand new year. Welcome to 2018! Now what? School is starting back and it’s a new semester. All that happened the first semester is over and you get a “fresh” start, right? What was that New Year’s Resolution again? Even though it is now 2018, on January 1st when you woke up, life was no different than December 31st. The struggles were still real and the feelings were the same, but it is a new day, a brand new start. Today is the day that we get to choose whom we are going to serve (Joshua 24:15). You have to make a choice! This year we need to think on Job 11:14-18. We need to scrub our hands of sin; we need to refuse to even entertain evil in our homes or lives. What music is it that you need to maybe turn off? What TV shows need to go? Friends? Do these friends lift you up or tear you down? What do you want to change in 2018? Don’t you long to be washed in the sunshine, to be full of hope, to relax and know that God’s got this?

28 // January 2018

Now is the time to put away those things that stood between you and the Lord in 2017. It’s 2018, “Now we look inside, and what we see is that anyone united with the Messiah gets a fresh start, is created new. The old life is gone; a new life burgeons! Look at it!” 2 Corinthians 5:17 MSG. As I close, I want to end with a very familiar verse to most people. Jeremiah 29:11 says, “I know what I’m doing. I have it all planned out – plans to take care of you, not abandon you, plans to give you the future you hope for” (MSG). Today, make a choice that 2018 is going to be different than the past years. Stand tall and know that God’s got this all under control; all He needs from you is for you to be a willing vessel. Whom are you going to choose to serve? Let’s rock 2018 all for the glory of God. Amy Wilson is the Development Director at Teen Challenge Midsouth Adult Center in Chattanooga, TN and served as Youth Pastor for many years in the Cleveland area. She is married with one child and serving both at her local church and serves on the Council for a prison ministry called Kairos.

The Numbness of the NICU

O

by Donald Cantrell

n January 15th, 2013, I was refereeing a Middle School basketball game at Christian Heritage, when I received a phone call. Upon answering the phone my wife told me that they had admitted our daughter into the hospital and placed her on bed rest. I left the game and headed to Parkridge East, but at first I went to Erlanger East, which is entirely another story. Upon arriving at the “correct hospital” and the “correct room” it did not take long to realize that things were very serious. Our daughter’s water had broken and they planned on keeping her at the hospital until they felt it was safe enough to “take” the baby. If you have never experienced anything like this, you are blessed and lucky. The next two weeks were very trying and facing the unknown is so scary. When Whitney entered the hospital, she was still nine weeks away from her scheduled delivery date and now she was still seven weeks away. On the 29th of January the doctor decided that it was time and he could not safely wait any longer. We were all excited, but had no idea what the next days, months, and even years would bring for our family. The doctor induced labor but nothing really happened and our daughter really had a hard time as we all hoped the baby would come soon. Finally around 7 p.m. that night, they took her to the delivery room and within the hour they had performed a C-Section, and we had the smallest baby I had ever seen. Kinsley was a teeny tiny preemie, weighing a grand total of 3.10 pounds. We truly were not prepared for the next few weeks or the next few months. If you have never been in the NICU of the hospital, you are not aware of the horror, the

30 // January 2018

helplessness, and the hardships that occur in the little unit where “premature babies” are delicately cared for and hopefully nursed and nurtured into healthy little babies. Kinsley was kept in NICU for over two weeks and was allowed to go home on our daughter’s birthday, February 14th, 2013. In the NICU, you enter into a world of specialists and some of the most caring nurses and doctors one could ever hope to use. The little room is filled with machines and tiny units which each baby will call home until they are allowed to leave, ”if they leave.” In normal births, the baby is taken to the room and all of the family and visitors are allowed to see the baby and even hold the baby. Those in NICU just long to see the baby and can only dream of holding the little preemie. You are clueless as to all of the beeping, the tubes, and feel numb as you see the little room filled with other babies, other moms, other grandparents, and you can only wonder what each one is facing. It’s now been five years and those days seem as if they were decades ago. I love my little blue eyed bouncing ball of joy. She may have been a preemie, but she is our preemie. We love you Kinsley Morgan Smith Donald Cantrell is a lifelong native of Murray county and have been pastoring and preaching since 1980. I have had the honor of publishing over thirty books and my sermon material is sold all over the world by various on line companies.

Tomorrow

Is the First Blank Page of a 365 Page Book

W

by Laura Perdue

ell, the holidays have come and gone; I bet everyone is sitting full of all the turkey and stuffing you could eat while the bank account is as skinny as you plan on being in the upcoming New Year while committing to the most popular New Year’s Resolution there is: that brand new shiny gym membership! I am sure I will be right there along with you as I try to prepare to commit to getting healthier before the birth of my baby boy. While you are starting that challenge, I want to challenge you and your spouse this month to a different kind of New Year’s Resolution. One that involves your life partner and the weight lifting team that you two are and if you are not, than that the team you can become. As December has ended and January has made its wonderful arrival, when you find yourself reflecting on the last year, I want you to really stop and think, what are some things you see that you wish could change especially in your marriage? Do you possibly see one of you bearing the weight of the marriage more so than the other? How about your daily routines? Are you spending more time together or more time apart? I know for myself I reflect and admit there are some things I know I need to work on. One of my New Year’s resolutions is to spend more time at home with my husband making sure he is taken

32 // January 2018

care of versus working the 9-whenever I am ready to go home schedule trying to ensure that my bosses are happy and that the corporate office is well pleased. If I want to look at the biblical side of it, I know in my heart I am prioritizing my life in the wrong order and God is not pleased with me. You see, work should never come before God, My Husband, and my future child. Maybe for you it’s not work; maybe it’s something different that you are more committed to. Maybe for you its spending countless hours pumping iron at the gym working on your physical physique trying to impress everyone around you while the one person who loves you more than life itself is home trying to impress you every day by changing diapers, cleaning the house, cooking, cleaning, etc. and you haven’t even taken the time to notice (yeah, I said it). Instead of neglecting that person, if the gym is so important to you, how about asking that person along; it may mean more to them than you know. You might help them lift a load you didn’t realize they were carrying. There is a saying “Good Things Come to Those Who Lift Weights”; in this case you lift the weight off a loved one and I am sure nothing but good will come out of it! In closing I wish you and your loved ones the best in this new year and just remember the best time to start writing the first blank page of a 365-page book is today!

Life Lessons From My Dad

M

by Earl Brackin

y dad is 94. I’ve learned many things from him. Some things he taught me hands on, like playing music, throwing a ball, or how to hammer and saw. But some things I learned just by observing him. He served in the Army Air Corp during WWII out in the Pacific. After the war He returned home, went to college and became a band director. He was already a good musician, playing gigs all over the south. He even played in the pit band when the USO shows traveled his way in the Pacific islands. He was an original “Renaissance man”. He could build houses, be his own electrician, stand in as a mechanic if needed and that’s just for starters. He also worked as a fireman before he went to college. If you needed something done, you just asked my dad. But as talented and skilled as he was, it was “who” he was that set him apart. His character was to put others first. He turned down offers to travel as a musician in order to work a steady job so he could provide for a wife and child. As a teacher, he looked for ways to add value to the lives of his students. As a faculty member, he was always solving problems. This is where my story takes an unexpected turn. You see, my dad has a strange medical condition that has significantly altered his ability to function. Paralyzed on his right side, he can no longer play music. After he retired from teaching he played clarinet in a regional orchestra. Learned cello at 75 and then played that. His

34 // January 2018

last musical endeavor was to take up the bagpipes. He was a faithful member of pipers in Blairsville, GA and at 91 played and marched in parades. Not only is he paralyzed on his right side, but he can no longer speak anything but strange syllables. His mind is clear as a bell, but he can only communicate with yes or no nods. This is very difficult for a man who is a people person and never meets a stranger. On his 94th birthday my wife and I took him out to eat. As I pushed his wheel chair down the hall where he lives, he was continually smiling at other residents, waving at some and even grabbing the hand of a lady just to wish her well. He was doing what he always has done, adding value to people’s lives any way he can. He’s not perfect; he gets frustrated with me when I can’t understand what he wants, cries every time I have to leave, and wishes things were different. But his character is who he is. It’s his purpose for living. As we age, we begin to lose the ability to do things, some by choice and some not by choice. If our significance is rooted in what we do, then we are at risk of losing our purpose for living. But if our identity is in who we are, our character, then no one or thing can take that from us. Thanks dad, for living out that lesson for me. Earl Brackin is the Minister of Worship at Church on the Hill in Dalton, Georgia. He and his wife, Lisa, have three children and four grandchildren. You can hear his music at earlbrackinmusic.com

I

Matter Over Mind? by Kaye Stein

t’s a new year and time for all the New Year’s resolutions. But do we really have control over anything? Making plans would imply that you had some control over your life. You know the old saying, “life happens while you make plans.” It’s the truth, we try really hard to make changes, but there are so many variables in play that you can’t make change without help. It is a well-known fact that people have better compliance with exercise when they have a buddy to exercise with. So why do we make New Year’s resolutions? It is typically to change a bad habit, or to improve our life or health. Or to make the soccer team, to get into that dress from 2005, and of course, it tops the list, to get into that swimsuit for spring break. Well, stop the movie; let’s look at this from a different perspective, the brain. Have you heard of endorphins? When you exercise, your body releases chemicals called endorphins. These endorphins interact with the receptors in your brain that reduce your perception of pain. Endorphins also trigger a positive feeling in the body. There are other chemical changes with Serotonin and dopamine that have effects on your mood. Exercise is known to decrease depressive feelings, so you feel better about yourself. The brain also controls or interprets every function of the body. The brain is a power source, and affects how you view things. It should be the starting point for setting your New Year’s resolutions and goals. You can google all day for self-help tips, but it comes down to asking yourself how important is this? Is the

36 // January 2018

outcome going to be a lasting change? By March most people are fading on the enthusiasm, and by May most people have stopped working on that goal. So, set mental goals that will help you along the way towards the bigger goals. Easily achieved goals boost encouragement that promotes success. Examples of mental goals could be a weekend without chores, an evening without the kids, to a Sunday afternoon ride in the country. Most importantly, set achievable and realistic goals. Some resolutions should be taken carefully, and if you have a health condition, it is best to talk to your healthcare provider before starting a diet or exercise program. What does the Bible say about how to keep a covenant? Deuteronomy 5:1 says that Moses called all the people of Israel together and said, “Listen carefully, Israel. Hear the decrees and regulations I am giving you today, so you may learn them and obey them!” He uses the word listen and hear, putting a double emphasis on taking in and applying the instructions. Jesus also said that it is impossible to serve two masters. So, when making your New Year’s resolutions, think about how important they are. Make sure you do not sacrifice your time with God, because He will be your strength. He will be the one holding you up when it seems like every good thing you try to do fails. He is the only one who has the power to affect your world! Together you can do wondrous things! Kaye Stein, a published author, wife, mother, and Nana, loves Christ the shepherd. She enjoys family time and her motto is “don’t miss the moment!”

Keep Moving Forward by Jenny Godwin

he phrase, “keep moving forward” has become a personal favorite of mine over the years. There are days I want to just give up and sleep all day or wallow in self-pity because life hasn’t turned out like I had planned or hoped. Maybe at times I throw a tantrum because I’ve messed up in an area I struggle in or someone I love is going through a painful time. In those moments we can stay stuck or we can keep moving. I like to look at it like quick sand. If we stay, we are going to sink and eventually die. Wow, talk about a dramatic spin, but it’s true. However, if we keep going and walk through life with a community and believers who will pull up alongside us to encourage and pray for us as we go, we will keep moving forward and come to new and refreshing seasons. I recently saw something on Instagram that said, “Eating junk all day because you ate two cookies is like stomping on your phone because you dropped it.” That convicted me because I do that with sin sometimes. It’s easy to let that mindset creep in and let us think, “Since I messed up in this area, I’ve got a free pass to keep doing it until tomorrow, Monday, or even next year.” Why do we have to wait? Guess what. We don’t! We serve a God who is faithful, forgiving, and oh so patient. He doesn’t give us the silent treatment for failing. Yes, there are consequences to sin, but through those we can see His hand stretched out to guide us.

38 // January 2018

Did you accomplish your resolutions or goals from last year? How about the fifteen before that? Neither did I. We have two options though. We can sulk and be mad at ourselves and feel like a failure as we compare ourselves to those around us or we can keep moving forward. I don’t know about you but I’m tired of defining my life by failures or goals not met. We don’t have to wait for the beginning of a new year to start over or to pick up where we stopped in a goal. We have the choice to pick up and go from where we are in this moment. God wants us to walk in obedience with Him. Psalms 37:23-24 says, “The steps of a man are established by the Lord, when he delights in his way; though he fall, he shall not be cast headlong, for the Lord upholds his hand.” What do you want to do this year? Get married? Travel the globe? Serve in your church? Bless a family in need? Lose weight? Write a book? No matter what has happened in the past, let’s keep moving forward in a life of grace that points others to God and shows them that it’s about progress, not perfection.

Stop Worrying!

You’re Going to Be Fine

I

by Lara Hayes

n March, 2012, my life seemed to be in a downward spiral. My dream job of 12 years writing for The Daily Citizen newspaper in Dalton had been eliminated in October, and a huge blood clot formed in my thigh in January, throwing my Stage 3 kidney disease into Stage 4. After 22 years in the workforce, I had no choice but to file for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI). A fresh start for the New Year was indeed happening, but not the way I wanted. Unlike my emotional state while going through breast cancer treatment three years prior, fear of the clot breaking apart and killing me consumed my thoughts. My brain did the Racing Rumba every night for a couple of hours wondering, “Am I going to die?” and imagining a bunch of “what if” scenarios until I finally drifted off to sleep. One night though, everything changed. The Lord had had enough of my doubt and unbelief. I’d woken up after maybe an hour of sleep when suddenly the room filled with a glowing white light—bright enough for me to see through closed eyes but not piercing and uncomfortable. Everything felt calm and peaceful, and I knew I was in the presence of an angel or Jesus Himself. All the stuff running through my brain vanished. Erased. Emptied. I couldn’t form a thought even if I wanted to. I laid still with my eyes closed—basking in the calmness and reprieve from negativity for I don’t know how long. I had also lost the concept of time. Then in the

40 // January 2018

blink of an eye, the light disappeared and my thought process returned. This time, however, instead of picking up where I left off, I said out loud, “I know that was an angel. I wonder what it wanted to tell me?” Instantly a male voice replied gently yet firmly, “Stop worrying! You’re going to be fine.” I smiled, drifted off to sleep and slept like a baby the rest of the night. Later that day, my dad came upstairs to tell me my uncle David had died while test driving his daughter’s car because she’d been noticing mechanical problems. She was behind him in his truck. He hit an oncoming car, but his daughter was able to avoid the wreck. His family said the doctors at Hamilton Medical Center told them a piece of a blood clot had broken off and gone to his heart—killing him instantly. He’d had gallbladder surgery a week before and was planning to return to work that Monday. Instantly it all made sense. While I grieved my uncle, I knew if it hadn’t been for the divine reassurance I probably would have had a nervous breakdown. Instead, over the next few months until I finished treatment that August, whenever those negative thoughts started trying to creep in... I’d remember those words, “Stop worrying! You’re going to be fine” and calm down. Unlike human made resolutions, you’ll never find heaps of Jesus’s broken promises. Which ones would you choose? Reality Check

W

by Nelson Haynes

ho is afraid of the big-bad-wolf? It lurks in the shadows but reveals itself daily. We refuse to look at it in the mirror of our soul. It is part of our make-up. Denying its presence will not make it flee. What is “it” you ask? The Human Condition. When Bono (of U2) journeyed to Flathead Lake, Montana in 2015 to meet with Eugene Peterson who wrote The Message (modern day translation of the Bible), he presented some interesting statements. Bono said: “Why I am suspicious of Christians is because of this lack of realism.” Do you know anyone who refuses to acknowledge the reality of the human condition? In the fall of 2016, one of the remaining Christian bookstore retailers decided against stocking a particular album. Four songs dealt with loneliness. Isn’t loneliness a part of the human factor as is depression and loss? I occasionally skim through devotionals in bookstores, and sometimes, before I finish reading the opening paragraph, a spiritual solution is reached without the author first painting a picture of the human experience. Why? Maybe the reason is found in the misinterpretation of Jesus’s words from Luke 9:23, “Then he said to them all: If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.” Jesus was not suggesting we ignore what is happening in our personal lives or that we deny our personality or

42 // January 2018

our feelings. However, he gave no option regarding saying “No” to our selfish interests and ambitions. Ann Voskamp writes from The Broken Way: “You don’t judge your feelings. You simply feel your feelings.” My friend turns those words over to me on the phone like an unearthing, an excavating of something sacred. “That’s what feelings are for—feeling.” I’d been bent down in the garden. Pulling out a bunch of overwintered, dead kale plants. Cradling the phone between my shoulder and my ear, listening to the words: “You don’t judge your feelings; you feel feelings-and then give them to God.” Bono also told Mr. Peterson: “Having feelings is perfectly normal. Let them out!” I have journaled for 30 years. It’s a space where I empty myself before being filled with the encouragement from a devotional and a chapter in God’s word. Can you really accept the spiritual help God offers if you do not first admit where you are on the journey? When Jesus was tired and thirsty after walking about 40 miles from Judea to Jacob’s well, did anyone tell him “Be Strong?” When Lazarus died, did anyone tell Jesus to “get over” his friends’ passing? No, Jesus wept. (John 11:35). What happens when we acknowledge our weakness? “But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weakness, so that Christ’s power may rest on me” (2 Corinthians 12:9). What is keeping you from getting real with God in 2018? Nelson Haynes lives in Ringgold, GA, with his wife and two Labrador Retrievers, Bentley and Sadie. He is the father of 2 grown-daughters. He has a Masters in Christian Education from Dallas Theological Seminary. He was involved in full-time youth ministry for 14.5 years before working in the Insurance industry for 18 years to date. Word of Encouragement For the New Year 2018 by Kimberly Garrett

A

“But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint” — Isaiah 41:31

s we enter into the New Year of 2018, we must know that God’s plan for our lives is that we have joy and live life to the fullest. It doesn’t matter where you came from, all that matters is where you are going, because we walk by faith not by sight (2 Corinthians 5:7). In the 365 days ahead, we will encounter many new experiences some good and some bad but through it all, God has you covered. Psalm 91:4 says, “He shall cover you with His feathers. And under His wings you shall take refuge; His truth shall be your shield and buckler.” Don’t overthink, stop living in the past and trying to please everyone. You have to sometimes encourage yourself; tell yourself, “I am amazing, I am strong and brave.” Philippians 4:13 says, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” It’s not how good you are at things; it’s how good you want to be. Setting goals is the first step of turning the invisible into the visible; you can do anything you set your mind to.

46 // January 2018

Instead of finding reasons why you can’t do something find reasons why you can. Think good thoughts, speak good words, take good actions, drop old habits, step into higher standards, choose to be a better person; this will bring more to you than you can ever imagine. Today will never come again. Be a blessing to someone, be a friend. Encourage someone. Take time to show someone that you care, let your words heal and not wound. Look at each day positively, even if some days you have to look a little harder. Someday everything will make perfect sense. So for now, just laugh at the confusion, smile through the tears and hard times, and keep reminding yourself that God chose you and everything happens for a reason. May the coming year be a truly blessed one for you as you experience the comforting presence and guidance of the Lord and His provision for each step of the way. Kimberly Michelle Garrett is the wife of Charles, mother of Kimber, mother in-law of Raul the II, and grandmother of Raul the III. Her heart is to encourage, and help others get through rough times of being sick and how God gave her strength.

New Year’s Resolutions

H

by Tac Coley

ave you ever thrown a few clothes and essentials in your overnight bag and simply headed out without making any plans? I’m saying no known destinations, nor any idea of how long you care to stay. Just grab a few things and head out onto an adventure without any thoughts or plans of where you’re going, how long you’ll be gone or even who you will be with along the way. Free spirited, foot loose and fancy free will probably lead you almost nowhere, spending most of your time with nobody. Hopefully you don’t live your life without any plans or preparation. We need to eliminate things that distract us from obtaining our goals. Likewise we need to expand our horizons by including that which will encourage us to set obtainable goals. By increasing things that will nudge us forward and removing the things that drag us down, we can become more effective and efficient. What is called New Year’s resolutions might be viewed as strategic planning for your self. Most organizations and companies evaluate both where they are as well as where they wish to be. This process of identifying potential problems requires resolutions that will enable a change for the better. As we cross the threshold of a new year it is

50 // January 2018

vital to look back at where you’ve come from. Use the experience to evaluate what worked, what failed, and how change could improve your life. Change is never easy, yet is certainly going to occur. Planning for and expecting change could assist in keeping it a positive event, rather than a negative. Doing things because we always have, does not always produce positive results. Such traditions typically need to be altered and/or replaced. Change is constantly happening. Pretending to repeat traditions without acknowledging the need to change may stifle the best results. Some of us may be more open to adventure than others. Never shut the door on new possibilities—especially where God may be leading us into new adventures. Often people step out into faith, serving God in new areas or ways, which leads them into beneficial, enthusiastic, life changing servant-hood. Often we are unaware of what God can do until we accept the change God is calling into our lives. Is this the year? Are you willing to set some lofty goals in your service to God? I promise that once you do, you’ll find yourself fulfilled. Give it a try. Throw a few essentials in a bag and follow God into the adventure of a lifetime.
