Filled with the Holy Spirit, Peter replied, “Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you more than to God, you judge. For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard” (Acts 4:19-20). After further threats, the two apostles were released. They joined the rest of the apostles and held a prayer service. to others not just once in a while or when it might be expected. Showing love is a daily thing: not once a week, monthly, or yearly. We have to show others that we love and care for them. It may be a kind word, a smile, or a gesture of kindness that lets others know that they are important. It might be giving your time to help others when they are in need or just by being there for them. As a Christian, we have to show the love of Christ to others. Our family, friends, co-workers, and acquaintances are the ones who really deserve and need our love. In 1 John 3:1, The Bible tells us, “Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God; therefore the world does not know us, because it didn’t know Him.” Sometimes, it might be difficult to do when a

We all are trying: trying to live life, take care of our families, and serve God. So why would He allow us to suffer through such a year? Does God not see what is going on down here? Perhaps the Apostle Paul can give us some perspective. 2 Corinthians 11:24-28: “From the Jews five times I received forty stripes minus one. Three times I was beaten with rods; once I was stoned; three times I was shipwrecked; a night and a day I have been in the deep; in journeys often, in perils of waters, in perils of robbers, in perils of my

The Blessing List few years ago, while deciding on what my plans and goals would be for the new year, I found myself thinking about the blessings I had received in the previous year. And there were many! I tossed about the idea of making a gratitude journal: to begin writing about anything and anyone I could think of that I was grateful to have and to know. But although I had many wonderful memories and moments, I also faced numerous challenges and experienced a great deal of hurt. God taught me an abundance of lessons about looking more like Jesus in that particular year. I learned the importance of being quiet, how to let Him fight for me, and the heartbreaking truth of letting go of relationships that were no longer meant for my journey. I wholeheartedly believed then, and I know for certain looking back now, that that year was when I learned one of the most difficult lessons we must understand as Christians: the act of forgiveness when we think the other person doesn’t deserve it. As Christians, we know we must forgive others as we are also forgiven (Colossians 3:13). We also find in Mark 11:25 that when we pray, we are to forgive and hold nothing against anyone, so that we may always be forgiven by our Heavenly Father. Then there is the verse the Lord led me to that pierced my heart the most, Luke 6:28: to bless those who curse you and pray for those who mistreat you. I don’t know about you, but praying for those who are against me is not easy; it is surely easier than blessing them, though. I mean, really, Lord, do I have to bless the people who curse me? I already knew His answer. Yes, I do. That thought hit me like a ton of bricks. All the ways I had been mistreated, ridiculed, offended, or hated came bubbling up to the surface of my heart, and I knew this was about to be one of those moments in my walk with Christ I would never forget. Then a revelation happened that was so profound I began to sob. If all these years of being a Christian I had kept a prayer list, why then had I not also kept a blessing list? So I determined that I wouldn’t create a gratitude journal after all. No, this time was going to be different, and
20 // February 2021
I began what I refer to as my Blessing List. I don’t hope or pray for blessings for myself; instead, I write the names of those who have wounded me deeply, and I ask God to send them a blessing. Not just any blessing, either: I ask Him for something so specific and intimate that only they would recognize it came from Abba Father.
Have I become perfect since starting my Blessing List? Not even close, but I have learned that holding on to the bitterness from what someone did or said to me in the previous season only hurts me and everyone else involved. I pray this year the joy of blessing those who curse me will be prevalent in my life like never before and that my heart is molded to look a little closer to that of my Savior! Friend, I challenge you to let go of any unforgiveness and the pain of yesteryear and start your own Blessing List! Oh, the sweetness you’ll experience when you watch blessings you prayed for begin to be presented to people whom you were once bitter toward. This time around, let’s begin a new season of bringing blessings, just like Jesus.

My father, being too young for World War II, left his beloved Murray County, Georgia, and a gem of a beautiful, blueeyed brunette named Ruby, whom he had just begun “courting,” to work for the Bell Bomber plant in Marietta, Georgia. This plant was one of three in the United States that produced the B-29 Superfortress, the type of plane that dropped the atomic bombs on Japan. Being a skinny, 16-year-old farm boy, he was put to work crawling into the very shallow, unfinished wing assemblies to “buck rivets.” This involved holding a metal plate against the inside of the wing to mold a red-hot rivet into place when it was inserted through the wing’s shell by another employee on the outside.

Love Is In The Air!
H
by Brenda Dedmon
ave you noticed that in the month of February, there are the words “I Love You” printed on red hearts everywhere? It seems love is in the air,
and everyone is talking about it everywhere you go. Do you notice that when you go in stores to shop, there are red hearts hanging up, at school, the hallways are full of hearts, and even on TV, there are commercials about “love” with people kissing? UGH! Did you know that love is a verb? So what does that mean? It means that love is an action. Jesus gave us the best description of love in the Bible. John 13:34-35: “A new
command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Let’s discover some ways in which you and your family can model what Jesus said about how we are to love one another. We will use an acrostic for the word HEARTS. How can you share with others ways God shows His love to you? Invite your family to do this activity with you. Have your parents help you cut out red hearts. Give each family member five hearts and ask them to write on each heart one way God shows His love to them. Then make a paper chain of the hearts to hang in your house to remind you of all the ways God shows His love. Explore the Bible to find verses about God’s love for others. Use a Bible with a concordance in
Act by helping those in need. Choose a project in your community that you can participate in as a family. It may be donating clothes, giving food, or helping an elderly person who needs a friend. This Scripture reminds us why we need to act by helping others: “Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to act” (Proverbs 3:27). Read one of your favorite books about being kind, sharing with a friend, or helping someone. If you do not have a favorite, I would recommend “Somebody Loves You, Mr. Hatch” by Eileen Spinelli. Talk to God. God loves it when we spend time talking to Him. Thank Him for all the things He has given to you and the ways He takes care of you. You may choose to write your prayer so you can pray it again later to God. Sing. Ask your family to sing a song with you that reminds you of God’s love. One song could be “Jesus Loves Me” or “Oh, How I Love Jesus.” Have a fun time putting your Love in Action this month!

For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.” The wavering of the sea driven by the wind and tossed around by the waves of this life can be a hard struggle. One moment, the seas of life would be as smooth as a shiny, small stone in a pond, and the next moment, those waves would be over my head. The waves made it so hard that I lost control and began to sink into the sands. Yes, I’ve had some who have tried to explain the Master of their own destiny by comparing it to the circumstances that I have had. There is a lot of truth to that sometimes, but we can always have control over the storm that passes our way by letting Jesus into our hearts. We can eat the right foods, but we may still get sick. Of course, when one increases water intake, one should plan on increased water output. It is suggested that you urinate after each water intake if facilities are accessible. implementing, and maintaining a plan is important. Here are some thoughts and ideas and a plan to improve fitness. Most people have heard that exercise is good for you. Unfortunately, many people do not follow through with all of the good advice that they have heard. Before presenting some of the various general benefits of exercise and a fitness plan, here are some words of wisdom. According to the American Heart Association, “Being physically active is important to prevent heart disease and stroke,” which are two of America’s biggest threats to long, healthy lives. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention lists the same benefit and adds, “For people with chronic diseases, physical activity can help manage these conditions and complications.” Say no to an increased risk of heart attacks, strokes, and diseases, and say yes to physical fitness. Before athletes of all ages and levels begin their training and exercising seasons, it is usually a requirement that they undergo a preseason medical examination, also known as a “physical.” You are the athlete, and you should get medical clearance to start your fitness

But last March, his health took a sharp downward turn as his condition rapidly worsened. Cirrhosis of the liver leads to a buildup of fluid in the body, and a buildup of toxins, as the liver struggles to function. Those toxins leak into the abdomen and legs, resulting in fatigue, swelling, and weight loss. Some days, Scott can’t even get out of bed because he doesn’t have the energy. The only positive to this development was that Scott was now sick enough to be referred for the transplant list. But both Scott and Tammy were unprepared for what happened next: his referral was turned down. The transplant center did not accept the Parrishes’ selfpayment insurance network as valid, which was one of the

HDL cholesterol plays an important role in heart disease in two ways: Having high blood levels can actually lower your risk of heart disease, but having too little can increase your risk. Q: How would I know if my cholesterol levels are within a healthy range? A: The only way to know is to get tested. The American Heart Association recommends that most adults have a cholesterol test—it's a simple blood test—at least every four to six years. Ask your doctor what's best for you. Q: How are unhealthy cholesterol levels treated? A: If your cholesterol levels aren't what they should be, you may be able to improve them with some lifestyle
Q: What is cholesterol? A: Cholesterol is a waxy substance that your body actually needs to function normally. But if too much of it builds up in your bloodstream, your health could suffer as a result. Q: What causes high cholesterol? A: Your body makes some cholesterol. And cholesterol is found in animal-based foods, like meat and cheese. But the dietary components that raise blood cholesterol the most are saturated and trans fats. Foods high in these fats can cause your liver to make more cholesterol than your body needs. Q: What are the different types of cholesterol? A: There are two main types of cholesterol: Low-density lipoprotein (LDL), which is often called the bad cholesterol

It helps to: • Eat fewer foods high in saturated and trans fats, such as fatty meats and processed foods. • Eat more fruits, vegetables and whole grains. • Get some exercise, such as brisk walking, at least 150 minutes a week. • Maintain a healthy weight. “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep” (NIV). God’s love for us is described in terms of self-sacrifice. When Paul addresses human relationships, he uses that same sacrificial language: “Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her” Ephesians 5:25 (NIV). Jesus speaks of love on the night before his crucifixion declaring, “If you love me, keep my commands” John 14:15 (NIV). Jesus helps his disciples see that their love for him is not solely demonstrated by a depth of emotion, but more significantly by a commitment to obedience. What we can glean from this brief survey is that true love is defined by sacrifice and commitment. In

Things To Come
I
by Eddie Turner
n the Bible, we can read about various activities and events that signal the nearness of the day of redemption, also known as the rapture. Some of these events, however, represent trends that cannot be tied to a clear-cut date or time period. The wars, famines, and earthquakes that Jesus spoke of, for example, have been on the rise for so long that it’s tough to know which part of the upward slope we’re currently sitting on. Thankfully, the Bible does not leave us hanging. In order to determine whether a prophecy has been fulfilled, we need only examine our history. I mean, it
should be easy to find out if something’s already happened, right? We just need the specifics of one of these prophetic events. In the Book of Isaiah, we’re given several of them; each one is said to occur in the “latter days.” “See, Damascus will no longer be a city but will become a heap of ruins…In that day their strong cities, which they left because of the Israelites, will be like places abandoned to thickets and undergrowth. And all will be desolation” (Isaiah 17:1, 9). In these verses, we are told not only of Damascus’ imminent demise but also who’ll be responsible for its destruction. If you’re into world history, you likely know that Damascus has been deemed the oldest continually inhabited city in the world. Today, whichever city is second in line for this title has great potential to steal this record as Damascus was destroyed

by Israel in 2013. Isaiah goes on to tell of events concerning Egypt in the latter days. “‘I will stir up Egyptian against Egyptian—brother will fight against brother, neighbor against neighbor, city against city, kingdom against kingdom…I will hand the Egyptians over to the power of a cruel master, and a fierce king will rule over them,’ declares the Lord, the Lord Almighty” (Isaiah 19:2, 4). The year 2012 saw Egypt’s first democratically elected president, Mohamed Morsi, turn his back on the values he touted to the Egyptian people during his campaign. Once elected, Morsi granted himself absolute power that allowed his Muslim Brotherhood to rewrite the Egyptian constitution according to Islamic law. When this occurred, a deadly civil war broke out between Egyptians who supported Morsi and those who opposed him. If you watched this event unfold on the news, you might recall segments that were shown to inform the world of Egypt’s environmental and economic conditions. The news correspondent I watched might as well have been reading directly from the Bible. These are just a few examples of end times prophecies that describe current events. More prophecies concerning events that occurred over the last 15 years can be found in the Books of Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and Numbers. As tough as it is to imagine that the same prophets who foretold the birth of Jesus also spoke of events that would occur in the 2010s, the proof is “in the pudding,” as they say. God said each event would occur in relative proximity to the other as signals that the end is near, and they did. He also stressed the importance that we recognize them when they happen. Realizing just how close we are to the day of our redemption should not be what prompts us to jumpstart a Bible study and scramble hastily toward a relationship with God. What you learned here may be new and exciting, but our motive to do these things has been present since before the earth began. If anything, these signs should make our already-pounding hearts beat a little faster in anticipation of our Lord Jesus Christ.

It was the most beautiful singing I’d ever heard. I felt so much peace. My conscious mind slowly fought its way to the surface.
