any of us have experienced the joy of “found money”—whether it’s a few silver coins we discovered in the couch cushions, or paper money tucked into the pocket of our blue jeans. We always look at this lucky twist of fate as “free money.” And what is the likely result of our unexpected financial “windfall?” We spend it as quickly as possible, usually on something that brings instant gratification. In fact, “found money” is least likely to be saved, much less invested. Why is that? Because we didn’t work for this money, or earn it, so it “costs” us nothing—at least that’s what we tell ourselves to rationalize our impulsive choice to spend the money quickly. Quick quiz: when was the last time you received cash or a check in a birthday card or as a Christmas present? What did you do with the money? Can you put your hands on it now? Luckily, these are rhetorical questions. We already know the answer, and it’s very likely “no.” The money was a gift, so it was (in your mind) meant to be “spent” on something that made you feel good. After all, you told yourself, that’s what “they” would want, and that’s why they gifted you the money—to enjoy yourself. So you spent the money at the first opportunity. After all, you wouldn’t want to disappoint the giver, would you? Recently, I had the opportunity to test my own resolve regarding “found money.” My father came over to my house and said he had a surprise for me which he found in an old box in his attic. It was $400 worth of U.S. savings bonds which I had won in an essay contest in 1986 when

I was 17 years old. (I’ve always loved writing. Go figure). I was elated. This was “found money” for sure. I took the savings bonds to the bank and learned they were now worth $922 with all the interest over thirty-three years. Sounds great, right? That is, until you realize that the interest on these savings bonds was a little over two percent per year. In other words, they just kept up with inflation. Instead, imagine if that $400 had been invested in a broad stock market index fund earning on average 9%-11% per year. During that time period, $400 could have turned into $7,000 or $13,000. So what looks like a “lucky” instance of “found money” is less attractive when you consider that $922 of my compounded interest could have easily been $7,000-$13,000 instead if I’d invested it in a stock index mutual fund. And let’s get even crazier. What if I had put that $400 in savings bonds into a brand new company which went public in 1986 and began selling shares on the stock market? The company was called Microsoft, and today that $400 from my essay contest prize would be worth about $700,000. Considering my essay was about one thousand words, that’s seven hundred dollars per word! Not bad for a seventeenyear-old who took about thirty minutes to write the essay. We can’t go back and change the past. But we can start now. So I took that $922 from the bank last month and immediately invested it into a broad stock market index fund for my daughter’s wedding. She’s ten years old. By her wedding day, that money should be worth at least several thousand dollars—a gift from my seventeen-year-old self to a daughter I never knew I’d have one day. How cool is that?

Overcoming Your Mountain few months ago, my daughter and her friend were in a dance competition in Nashville. As the friend’s mother and I with the two little girls crossed Monteagle Mountain and headed to Nashville, my car began to overheat, placing us on the side of the mountain. It was 10 p.m., and we had our two little girls with us! This mountain, which I had been driving over for 20-plus years, now became something I dreaded. We made it to Nashville, but I started fearing the trip home in two days. On the trip back from Nashville, everything was going smoothly; however, I looked ahead and saw the mountain I now dreaded. It was rainy, foggy, and getting dark as I approached the mountain. In my mind, the mountain was impossible to cross. As I approached the base of the mountain, it was worse than I had imagined. I can still see it in my mind. The mountain was foggy, rainy, and staring back at me. We stopped just before Monteagle, and I went into a gas station, continually in prayer, and a peace fell over me! Even though this mountain was not going to be moved, as I was going to have to cross it, I had peace knowing that He was with me. A new courage and strength were with me! Sometimes, God removes mountains (circumstances) so that we do not have to deal with them or go through them, and sometimes God allows us to cross over mountains, but He is with us in the process. Either way, He is there for you and helping you. I honestly prefer God just to move the mountains, but sometimes the process of the “going over” is crucial to take us where we need to be! Often, in life, when we pray, obstacles are removed. My favorite Scripture to pray when I am facing something big is Mark 11:23: “For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith.” I love to have a giant mountain in front of me and get a “suddenly” miracle when God just

removes it. He often does! We all rejoice and shout when this happens, but what about when we have to cross the mountain in unfavorable conditions? What do we do then? There are times when we pray, and the mountain is still there. We have to keep going forward to get to the other side, which means crossing the mountain. Crossing the mountain is not fun, but it is sometimes necessary to get you where you need to be. We tend to make excuses as to why we can’t proceed and give reasons why we need to “turn around” and retreat. Giving up sometimes looks like an amazing option,
but really, what are you giving up to? In this particular example, my “giving up” would keep me in Nashville, and my life is in Chattanooga. My only option was to go forward despite my circumstance. As we headed up and over the mountain on that dark and gloomy evening, HE was with us as He always is! Even though I had to cross the mountain, it was easy with Him! Today, I speak to you and to your mountain that needs to be removed, and I declare it so NOW in Jesus name. I speak to everyone going over a mountain and pray comfort and peace be with you. Mountains can be large and frightful, but with Him, everything is calm.

A Story Of Redemption ood morning! I would like to say thank you, Lord, for waking me up today. I woke up today with breath in my body, so I know I still have a purpose. Today, I’m thanking God for deliverance. On this day six years ago (November 15, 2013), I made a choice to surrender it all to Christ. I was broken, tired, and addicted to meth and crack, and doing it my way was getting me nowhere. God loved me so much that He left the 99 just for me. I was on my way to hell and on a fast pace to get there. My marriage was toxic and abusive on many levels. My daughter was in a foster home. I was involved in witchcraft and homosexuality. I was begging for death. I tried to kill myself, and the enemy told me I was so useless that I couldn’t even do that right. My mind was warped, and without my daughter being at home, it was like reliving death over and over every day. It seemed I had lost all hope. God sent me some people who began to pray, speak, and sow into my life. It was like a veil had been taken off, and for the first time, I could actually see that just maybe, there was another way. My mind started to become clear. At this time, God wrecked me with His love! I was seeing for the first time that I could actually be loved and not just tolerated: to be loved in a sense that was not being abused. Through God’s word, I found that I was worth dying for. God did it just for me, and He is faithful to do it just for you as well. That day, I gave up doing it all my way and began to try doing it God’s way. Has it been easy? NO! At times, it has been very hard. I had to change my whole way of thinking. Sometimes, moving forward is a hard choice, but in the end, it’s the better choice for me and my family. Today, I am six years clean, my daughter is back home, and I have full custody of her. Have I been perfect? By all means, no! I have failed myself and my family and hurt God. But one thing’s for sure: my Father never left me. He forgave me, and He still calls me His own. I’m still in the race. My purpose has not been completed. So here is my point: it’s not how you fall that counts but how you get back up. Just because you fell does not

mean that God left you. When you see your brother or sister fall, that does not mean you should bash them and take their fall to the streets—it means you should restore them in meekness and love: the love of the FATHER. The world beats us down enough; we don’t expect our brothers and sisters in Christ to do the same thing. Just because you take a fall or didn’t walk in your calling does not mean God changed His mind about you. People may change their minds, but God never will! I pray this may help someone and that you see that there is hope, restoration, and healing in Jesus. I love you all and thank you for reading a part of my testimony.

As the wife keeps on submitting herself to her own husband’s authority, she will be subjecting herself as to the Lord. II. Be Appreciative of Your Own Husband (Ephesians 5:33). Not only must the wife be subject to her husband, she must also respect her husband (Ephesians 5:33; 1 Peter 3:1-2). The term respect (φοβηται) does not merely mean telling him you respect him with your lips, but also showing him you respect him through your life. It is through chaste and Christlike behavior that you demonstrate biblical respect to your husband. After all, you may not be able to reach him with your Bible, but you can reach him through your behavior (1 Peter 3:1-6). You see, if Christian couples spent less time criticizing and more time eulogizing, the marriage would be more edifying. The Apostle Paul exhorts wives to “love their husbands and children, be sensible, pure, workers at home, kind, being subject to their own husbands, so

Church of God Smoky Mountain Winterfest Is A Gift From God
A
rguably, Smoky Mountain Winterfest does more for evangelism, spiritual growth, genuine encounters with God, and callings to ministry than almost anything else. This ministry brings revival, friendship, renewal, and connection to students from throughout the USA. The fuel, energy, excitement, and relationship connections experienced at Winterfest change young people; their hearts, their hopes, their hurts, and their homes. Smoky Mountain Winterfest has come a long way since 1982, when 279 students and five youth leaders gathered for a winter youth retreat in Gatlinburg, TN. The story of Winterfest and the ensuing years of growth is an amazing one. By 1986, Winterfest attendance was 2,300. The new movement found favor and alignment with the International Department of Youth and Discipleship and became a flagship ministry. Instead of seeking to “take it over” with a top-down leadership management style, leaders embraced the concept and were eager to find new ways to maximize the success of this ministry. By 1995, it took two jam-packed services each night at the new Gatlinburg Convention Center to provide the almost 13,000 students a chance to worship, pray, and seek the face of God. The first session would begin at 6:00 pm with doors opening at 4:30 pm, and the second session would begin at 9:30 pm. For five years this was the process. It was awesome to watch 6,500 leave through one set of doors and 6,500 march in through another with the same excitement (or more) as the first group. The final session never concluded until about midnight, and it was usually 2:00 am before any of the Winterfest steering committee could get to bed! In the year 2000, Winterfest made the courageous decision to move to Thompson Boling Arena in Knoxville... and the rest is history. For 20 years, the arena used for Tennessee Volunteer Basketball has become an enormous sanctuary. Now Winterfest reaches around the country and around the world to four continents, (Europe, Africa, Asia, & North America) giving hope, peace, and passion for Christ to 40,000-50,000 students annually!

e can step into a new year full of happiness and excitement. Numerous people begin to chatter with family and friends about their New Year’s resolutions, whether it’s about losing weight, not using profanity, spending more time with family, finishing a project of any kind (honey do list), or any other goal we may have for ourselves. Whatever the case may be, we must prepare our armor to accomplish our goals because there is an enemy on the battlefield ready to attack us.
Truth be told, we need the Belt of Truth to help hold our lives together. If we try to reach an important goal in our lives for this new year, we do not need Satan whispering lies of defeat in the process. Moreover, we must be truthful to others because in this, we can possibly set a captive free from Satan’s deceitfulness, allowing them to accomplish their goals and protecting our fellowmen. We are told by God to guard our hearts and to flee temptation (Proverbs 4:23 and 2 Timothy 2:22). What better way to protect our hearts than with the Breastplate of Righteousness? Harsh and negative words may come

as flying arrows to persuade us that we are less than, but if we shield our vital organs properly, we can dodge negativity that could try to keep us from living and being active. Likewise, we need a pair of footwear that is prepared with the readiness of the Gospel. Trials and temptations will come our way this year, but we have to be ready to run, jump, and do flips to dodge temptations that may hinder us from reaching our goals or, in some cases, tempt us to cheat our way to the top—an ill-gotten gain. “You of little faith, take up your helmet!” I cringe when I find myself faithless and my brain and thoughts unguarded. The Shield of Faith can shield us from any doubt that we may have toward our goals and what we can and cannot do. We have a God who can do all things and gives us the strength to do so when we trust and believe that it is done. Our Helmet of Salvation will protect our thoughts towards ourselves and others. When we think of the verse “Do unto others as we will have them do unto us” (Luke 6:31), and when we have the “mind of Christ” (1 Corinthians 2:16), we can be sure that we are heading into war with fresh and thought-out strategies. Lastly and all in all, the Sword of the Spirit is the Word of God. God’s Word will pierce the darkness. Any evil lurking, light will find it out and bring it to light. God’s Word is a solid rock. When we feel as though we cannot carry out our resolutions because of hindrances, we can open the Word, feed on it, and speak those words out into existence through prayer, trust, and faith while fitted with the Armor of God. My Father’s Made-From-Scratch Biscuits

he name of this recipe is actually a misnomer. To my knowledge, my father never made biscuits from scratch, although he could make a great pecan pie from his mother’s recipe. This is my mother’s recipe, which she would rise as early as 4:30 a.m. to bake for my father’s breakfast before sending him off to work. She also could not be convinced to bake biscuits and cornbread on Christmas Eve in order to save time on Christmas Day. No day-old biscuits for her cornbread dressing! Many cooks roll the dough out and then cut out the perfectly round delicacies. This method leaves oddly shaped scraps of dough, which are sometimes re-rolled to make additional biscuits. Everyone knows that these “second-rate” biscuits are never as good as the first batch. For much of my life, I felt like a second-rate biscuit. I felt as if God had some leftover DNA after creating the beautiful people, the good people, the accepted people: people I would never be, so He made me instead of wasting that DNA. Not having time to waste on complicated recipes or methods, my mother usually employed a rather unusual method. Instead of rolling the dough, she would simply break off a piece a little smaller than a baseball and roll it between her work-worn hands. When sufficiently rounded, it would be flattened into a disc with her fingertips, leaving their impression, as well as her fingerprints, all over it. It was then lined up like a good soldier in the pan and placed in a hot oven to fulfill its destiny. As the biscuits are pulled from the oven in all their golden-baked glory, so we will be pulled from the fires of life into the glory of Heaven. My mother liked simple recipes: the fewer the ingredients, the better. Using self-rising flour, this recipe has only three ingredients, just as our salvation and hope have only three ingredients: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. We are like fresh biscuits in God’s hands. We are created individually with God’s fingerprints all over us: fresh every morning, just like God’s mercies.

Ingredients • 2 cups Self-Rising Flour
• 3 Heaping Tablespoons Of Lard (May Use Shortening) • ¾ Cup Milk

reheat oven to 400°. Grease a 10-inch castiron skillet (or any cake pan). Put flour into a 1.5-quart mixing bowl. Add lard and cut into small pieces with a fork or pastry cutter until well mixed. Add milk gradually until it forms a dough ball (more or less milk may be necessary). Flour hands and pinch off a piece of dough slightly smaller than a baseball. Roll between hands until it forms a ball and the surface is smooth. Flatten into a disc about an inch thick and place in pan. Continue until all dough is used. Bake at 400° for 20 minutes. If not browned properly, turn on broiler to brown the biscuits and watch carefully! Makes five crusty biscuits about 3 inches in diameter.

Focused On The Goal hen on a road trip, little kids in the back seat of the car can often be heard saying, “Are we there yet?” They may ask this question several times along the journey. If the travel is to a destination like Disney World or Dollywood or Lake Winnepesaukah or somewhere else fun for them, the anticipation is sometimes more than they can seem to handle. Thus, “Are we there yet?” may be a frequent exclamation. The destination has become the goal they are intently focused on. In several sports, the goal is the desired end. “Fourth and goal” is a critical point for a football team’s offensive players seeking to advance the ball beyond the goal line and score points. In a game of soccer, a goal is scored when the ball passes over a goal line at the end of the field. In order for these teams to score points, their focus has to remain on the goal. The word “focus” can be well described as an acronym: Follow One Course Until Successful. 50 // February 2020
In Philippians 3:13-14, Paul writes, “But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” Paul’s focus was upon continuing toward what God had called him to and setting aside whatever mistakes he had made in the past. He was intently focused on the goal. What goals do you have? Maybe you are setting resolutions for the new year ahead. Be encouraged today. Set goals for your life that are specific, measurable, and attainable and that line up with God’s Word. Try not to focus on the mistakes or disappointments of the past. Keep your focus on the goal ahead. Move forward in life with the direction that God’s Word can provide.
