How to Read the Bible
eople frequently ask, “How should I read the Bible?” It’s a great question, because the Bible is a big book, written by 41+ authors, translated from 3 languages, and encompassing some 4200 years of ancient cultures. It can certainly be intimidating! So here’s some of the counsel I give. 1. Read patiently. 66 books means a lot of ground to cover, a lot of theology to learn, and a lot of history to grasp. New words, concepts, and the deeply interconnected nature of Scripture means this will be a
long-term project, and that’s okay. Take a breath; take a step; rinse and repeat. 2. Read prayerfully. This reading is no merely cognitive exercise. To understand the Bible rightly requires the illuminating work of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 2:9-10,14) to lead us to Christ, who is the centerpiece of Scripture. Such growth is under God’s providence (Hebrews 6:3), and teaches us dependence on him. 3. Read persistently. The Bible takes time to master, and a lifetime to be mastered by it. Chip away at it! Most biblical books can easily be read startto-finish in under an hour, and some in less than 10

minutes. Discipline yourself to read a portion each day, and decide to do it stubbornly. 4. Read practically. Scripture contains lovely doctrinal depths, each intended to lead us to worship God, and to teach us how to live unto him, for his glory. Theology is meant to be lived (1 Thessalonians 2:13), and Scripture overflows with theology. 5. Read personally. The Bible speaks to my need, my sin, my obedience, my worship, the state of my soul, and most importantly, my Savior. Humility is key here: it’s written to others, but it’s for us (Romans 15:4; 1 Corinthians 10:11). Don’t ignore its original historical context; but don’t discount its wisdom and perspective for today, either. 6. Read progressively. In other words, aim for the progress of understanding more today than you did yesterday. That means taking time for study, research, and reflection. Don’t aim for just moving the bookmark; aim for grasping the meaning. 7. Read promised-ly (hey, I was on a roll). In other words, read Scripture on its own terms: as not only the very word of God, but also God’s testimony of his redeeming love in Christ. Scripture speaks about Jesus (Luke 24:25-27,44ff; John 5:39,46). He is its ultimate subject and controlling category, and all God’s promises are kept in him (2 Corinthians 1:20). Rebels receive gracious promises, mediated only through Jesus. So, across Scripture’s various genres, history, narrative, Gospel, epistle, wisdom, and poetry, lies the big picture of who God is, and how he showed mercy in Christ while we were yet sinners. The goal of reading the Bible is to know this God: obeying him by his word, communing with him by his Spirit, drawing near to him by his Son, resting in his steadfast love, to the praise of his glory. Clanging Cymbals
lang, clang, CLANG! My friend doesn’t like loud noises! She cringes at the noise. Her hands cover her ears. Her face says it all. Sometimes she goes all the way into another room. CLANG! Is that the way the world looks at us, when we are noisy and not showing love? God says love is patient, love is kind. Love does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, and it keeps no record of wrongs (1 Corinthians 13:4-5). Does God only hear my noise or does He see me loving others like He does? God’s word says, if I don’t have love, I have nothing. Nothing! Even if I speak like an angel and I give all I have away to the poor for Jesus’s sake, I still have nothing without love. Our world seems to be really noisy right now! People saying, “Look at me”, “Look what I did”. Clang, clang, CLANG! This is not how Jesus walked on this earth. He loved, and he loved us all! He was not noisy; He came quietly into our world and turned it upside down with His love on the cross. He took our sins upon Him. He did not say, “Look at me.” He said, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” He

healed the sick, talked to, and touched people that no one wanted to be near. Who does Jesus want me to love? Who does He want me to sit next to at lunch? Who does He want me to be nice to, even if they are not nice to me? I was challenged in college to pray for who I need to sit by. By doing this, I became friends with people I might never have met. Who does God have planned for me to talk to today? Who needs a smile? It just might change a life. I have another friend that can’t hear well. If he is missing my noisy cymbals, can he see God’s love in me? Does he see that God will always protect him by my example of love? Does he see that God always loves? Am I showing him that Jesus died just for him? I must show love so that others can see Jesus! During this season of love, I don’t want to be noisy. I want to be quiet and show love! I don’t want to be a gong or a cymbal, I want to whisper, “Hey you, God loves you so much He died for you! He is so patient with you. He is so kind. He always protects us. You can always find hope in God!”

The Big Why MONEY MATTERS WITH DR. ANDREW LEE Dr. Andrew Lee is professor of English at Lee University. He also serves as a coordinator for Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University. He and his wife Esmerelda have three children.
W
hen we say we “need money,” that’s not exactly true. Money is just paper, or coin, or digits on our computer screen, and that doesn’t really do us any good. It’s only what we can do with the money that matters. That’s what we really want—to pay bills, make purchases, or donate to a worthy cause. Many of us recently made New Year’s resolutions, and these are typically vague notions such as “save more money,” “get out of debt,” “give more this year.” We’re much more likely to stick to our “resolutions” if they are specific, timeoriented, and measurable. So instead of “save more money,” try something like “have $100 per month automatically deducted from my paycheck and deposited into my savings account by the 15th of every month.” This goal is easy to track to see if you’re really sticking to it. Instead of, “get out of debt,” try something like “pay off my Visa credit card in full by the last day of March, and then start making double car payments each month from April through the end of November.” Instead of “give more money to worthy causes,” try something like “start tithing ten percent to my local church starting on the first of next month” or “donate at least two hundred dollars to these two charities in 2019.” In order to actually follow through on these resolutions—and to make meaningful progress with your finances, it’s crucial to know the “Big Why”—why do you want financial security? What does that really mean for you? What does it look like and how will you know if you’ve achieved financial security? These questions are the absolute starting point for financial management because if you don’t know where you’re going or why you

want to get there, you never will. For married couples, knowing “our Big Why” is imperative. Couples should sit down together and brainstorm (yes, actually write down your ideas) what their “ideal future” looks like: is it to travel to other countries regularly? Send the kids to private schools? Establish scholarships at your alma mater? Provide clean water for needy villages? Buy a ski boat? Build a rustic lodge in the mountains? Pay for home health care for an aging parent? Couples should share their honest answers to this question: “If I/we had enough money to do anything, what would we want our life to look like?” Couples need to discuss this early and often, to stay motivated on the journey to financial security. This is especially true of the “reluctant spouse” who resists the idea of a “budget” and thinks buying consumer goods every month is “more fun” than seeing growing balances in savings and investment accounts. Once everyone agrees on the “Big Why,” it’s now clear what the end goal is. Next, you can implement a plan for how much money it will take to achieve those goals, and then map out the steps to make these goals a reality. For single folks, you don’t get off the hook. You also need to write down the answers to these questions in order to know your “Big Why.” Discuss your plans with a trusted friend, relative or mentor, and start to map out what you’ll need to do financially in order to achieve your goals. Too often, our New Year’s resolutions put the proverbial “cart before the horse.” Before listing action steps, take time to know why you’re wanting to take these actions in the first place. Once you know this, you’ll have motivation to take action.

Adapting to Life’s Changes very minute of every day, things happen that could completely change the course of our lives. If you are anything like me, the thought of this makes you cringe. I'm a creature of habit. I am completely okay with the cookie cutter life of keeping the same job for thirty years, having the same Friday night dinners with your friends, and living in the same small town with family close-by for the next fifty years. A routine keeps me calm and makes me feel like I'm in complete control. What happens when life hits us with a change, a change that will stir up our routine and make us a little bit uncomfortable?
Women in today's society have many roles in this busy life: mothers, wives, CEO's, friends, sisters, and teachers. Most of the time, we have to juggle more than one role at a time. What if life throws a curve ball at us? It's not like life stops for us to reevaluate. Life keeps quickly moving by and rarely gives us time to react to change in a healthy way. Our job shuts down and we quickly have to find a new one, our friends who we have weekly plans with have to move unexpectedly, or your family gets busy with new jobs and activities and the time you used to spend with them starts dwindling down to nothing. The schedule you have set for your life is a type of therapy. It leaves you with less worry and gives you a peace of mind. Society makes us, as women, think

that we should always be moving and be able to power through anything life throws our way. Society is a liar and it’s okay for us not to be “okay.” Philippians 4:6-7 says, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” The Lord knows that we as humans will have daily struggles, thus, he gives us words of encouragement. If we begin to feel as though we can't handle one of life's changes, it’s okay to face it then and there. We should stop holding in our feelings for others' sake. First and foremost, we should pray that our anxieties are taken from us. God says not to be nervous; that he is with us every step that we take. What can we as women do to combat our anxieties that are brought on by change? If we suddenly have an open slot of time in our schedules that was once filled with a weekly activity that you enjoyed, find a new hobby to use that time for. If you have children, use that time for one-on-one time for you and them. If you have the money, use that time for a couple of ours of “metime” and go get a massage or pedicure. Maybe we, as women, just need a moment of reflection. Need to cry? That's okay. Feel angry? That's okay too. Taking time to breathe and embrace our emotions is an important part of being human. No matter what people tell us, it is healthy to not be “happy” all the time. On top of everything we can do to bide our time, we should always make time for personal talks with our heavenly father. Humans are sinners and will find ways to let us down, whether knowingly or not. God is always on our side and always has time in his schedule for us. He is an unwavering God. Next time life throws a change at you, put some time in your schedule to talk to God. We never know the plans he has for that change.

Spicy Thai Chicken and Noodles by Deanna Key
Ingredients
Instructions
• 1 - 2 boneless chicken breasts
1. Chop garnish items and set aside
• 1 lb linguine pasta (or fettuccine, spaghetti, etc.)
2. Cut chicken into strips and cook in the skillet with a little bit of oil until done and set aside.
• ½ - 1½ Tbsp. red pepper flakes (amount depends on how spicy you want it)
3. Boil pasta and drain.
• 2 Tbsp. vegetable oil • 1/3 - 1/2 cup sesame oil • 1½ Tsp. chili paste • 6 Tbsp. soy sauce
4. While the pasta is boiling heat the oils in a large skillet and add the red pepper flakes. 5. Once the oil is hot strain the red pepper flakes and reserve the oil in a bowl. Add the reserved oil back into the skillet and add the chili paste. Whisk in your soy sauce and honey.

6. Toss your pasta and chicken in the sauce and coat well.
• Scallions, peanuts, cilantro and sesame seeds for garnish
7. Can be served hot, room temperature, or even cold. Top with your garnishes and enjoy!

hen I first started dating my husband I was trying to find new dishes I could
try and I knew he loved Asian food so I gave this a try. It’s super easy and quick, but still flavorful. They say a way to a man’s heart is through his stomach and this has definitely been proven true for me. This has been one of his favorites from day one and it is so versatile. You can add shrimp, pork, vegetables or leave it plain with just the noodles and sauce. It’s a great and easy recipe to give your menu a little kick. Enjoy!

Here are four rules I’ve learned over the years:

Let me toss out a solution that has worked for me. On those difficult days, I search the scriptures to find God’s encouragement. I wrap His loving Words around me and know He is working on my behalf! It takes the pressure off. When conflict arises, the best dose of medicine is to spend time in His word. Deuteronomy 4:9 is one of the verses that keep me going. It says, “Only be careful, and watch yourselves closely so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them fade from your heart as long as you live. Teach them to your children and to their children after them.” This scripture gives me strength not to get unnerved. It also helps me hold my tongue instead of adding fuel to the fire. The parent-child bond is one the enemy loves to attack because it’s a relationship that
we decided he should oversee his children, and I manage mine. It’s helpful that we can offer advice and experiences to each other on the topic of parental guidance. Today’s society calls us a blended family, but I like to think of us as a united family by choice. Parenting is something I need to work on daily, because sometimes it feels like a roller coaster ride, with hairpin curves and down-hill drops we never see coming. God has entrusted us with these precious people. My goal is to produce meaningful relationships with them. I want more than an occasional “Hi, how’s the weather?” conversation.

is important to God. Our Heavenly Father is a pure representation of what love looks like in a parent-child connection. Our children are watching how we control our actions. When I’m at my wit’s end with my kids, I pray and let God deal with them. If I want my relationships to be different, it’s up to me to always model self-control. I can influence my children by living for Christ today more so than arguing to make them see my point. There are plenty of joys and broken hearts raising children. The Bible says that you are “fearfully and wonderfully made!” Small simple steps that you might take are to first find a quiet place where you can have some intimate time with the Lord and He can begin to reveal Himself to you in a more personal way. Then start with a glass of water in the morning, one at noon, and one with dinner! You might hate water like I do, but it is a necessity. Begin to take small walks when you have a chance, a little is better than none! If you feel the

s he looked up at my son, in that nanosecond I saw the gleam in his eye and I knew. All of our effort, the hard work and perseverance had paid off. The idea, the process and the product was now validated. The rush of memories flooded back into my mind, but I knew I had to compose myself because, without a shadow of doubt in my mind, Mr. Wonderful himself was about to make us an offer. Tripp’s dream come true. What started as a classroom assignment in 3rd grade is now going to change our lives forever. That is exactly how it started. From an early age we knew Tripp was creative. When his teacher, Mrs. Martha Thomason, challenged him to write a paper or come up with an invention, he got motivated to show that creativity. As he told the Sharks, “I did what any logical 9 year old boy would do, I chose to avoid the writing”. He came home and said Dad, “I need to make an invention. How in the world do I make one”? I told him what now has become our core belief: “Tripp, you have to Identify a problem and

then come up with a solution to fix it.” He went to his room to consider what problem he could solve. After 30 minutes, he ran in and said “I GOT IT! I was playing with my Lego airplane and the wing kept popping off. I need a way to glue the pieces together but not forever!” The next day I called a very good friend of mine that owned an adhesive manufacturing business. He thought for a few minutes and said, “I think we can make that happen.” Just as Tripp directed, we found it was easily dissolved in water, strong but not permanent. Le-Glue was born. Mrs. Thomason entered his invention into the International Torrance Legacy event, and Tripp won 1st place, competing 1st grade through 12th grade. And as he says “I even beat the high-schoolers!” We purchased little tubs with tops, made five gallons of Le-Glue and printed some labels. We scooped glue into the tubs with, Tripp’s sister, Allee’s baby spoon. We applied the labels screwed on the lids and then started a listing on Amazon. To our surprise, Le-Glue started selling. Two, three, four, or five units each day.
Before we looked up, we had sold almost $50,000 worth of Le-Glue. With that came our next adventure. Our banker, Bill Davies, and a carpet titan, Bryan Macon, both contacted me about a local entrepreneur event called Pitch Dalton Innovation Accelerator. They both knew of Tripp and said I should enter Tripp and Le-Glue. They told me we could win valuable services. I responded, “We really don’t need anything.” Bill said there is a $5000 cash prize. Well that changed my attitude so I followed their advice and filled out the paperwork. So Tripp and Allee gave a wonderful 15 minute live presentation in front of hundreds
in the audience, along with the four expert judges’ panel. Le-Glue won the Pitch DIA. They received a giant check, like winning golfers get on TV, plus that list of services that I had thought “un-needed”from local enterprises. Little did we know that The Minor Law firm would be needed to apply the shares of the business into a trust to protect the kids from the Sharks. Nor that John Minor would have to spend hours on our behalf looking into the complex contracts a Shark would lay out. Nor did we know that there would be thousands of hits to our website in the first two minutes of the show airing that would have shut our site down without the help of Inventure IT. Those “un-needed” services were of utmost importance and I would contend, providentially provided. On Thursday the week before the PITCH finals, we found out about the Shark Tank open call. We got up around 4 AM and drove to Suntrust Park. We met lots of entrepreneurs with some good and some bad ideas. It was a learning experience for Tripp. We shared our story and we listened to theirs. When the “crew” finally came out to hand out the bracelets that guarantees our entrance, we waited with anticipation watching and hoping they did not run out before they got to us. The anticipation was palpable as we watched each person ahead of us receive their golden bracelet. Then they came to us, the young lady stopped and looked at Tripp and said, “I know you! You are the Le-Glue Kid. We’ve been watching you!” I was stunned, and yes we got the bracelet (It still sits inside the Pitch DIA Trophy on Tripp’s shelf). Once inside we found out the young lady was not just anybody, she was the casting director! “Miss Mindy” was the boss, and she knew who Tripp was! I said, “Little Buddy, it is a BIG
Deal that she knew you.” When his number was called, he went up in front of the producer table and gave his pitch like Billy Mays from Oxi-clean. The producers said Shark Tank would call within two weeks if they wanted us to move forward. On Wednesday of the next week, I was walking upstairs about 9:30 PM and heard Tripp talking. We have a 9 o’clock PM cell phone curfew, so I was about to reprimand him. I opened the door, he has his phone on his chest while playing Xbox. He looks up and casually whispers, “Shark Tank.” I am screaming inside my head but, as cool as possible, he looks up again and says, “I got this Dad.” And he did, he had it all the way to those famous swinging doors of the “Super Bowl of business.” People always ask so I share what I consider to be my most vivid memory of the experience. Tripp never gets nervous, but as we stood at those massive doors waiting to walk down that shark-infested corridor, he looked down at the floor and muttered, “I can’t do this.” Allee raised her kind hand to stroke his back and in her sweet voice whispered, “Its Ok”. I bent down and looked him in the eye and told Tripp, “You already have done it. You got us here to the biggest stage in business. No one knows your story
better than you, so just go tell it. If you fall, I am here. If you fail, I am here. I promise I will take care of it. There is no one better to have your back than your dad.” He clenched his fists, raised his head, and looked up just like that night on the phone and cooly said, “I got this.” Those doors opened and he did have it. Those five Sharks turned into to gold fish with smiles on their faces. He had them laughing and cheering his sly and sarcastic humor. They loved him and Tripp loved that stage. Tripp has always watched Shark Tank since before he started school and he revered Kevin O’Leary. So when Kevin’s black eyes looked into Tripp’s, I knew the deal was done. It wouldn’t matter who else made an offer, Kevin is Tripp’s man. Tripp did it; he set a goal, he worked for it, and he accomplished it. I think often about my 20 second speech to my little buddy and cherish it as one of the best moments of my life.

ou're a teenager, so I'm guessing at some point you've played a video game. Console, pc, mobile, it really doesn't matter because they all have something in common that gamers get frustrated with at some point and time and that's the game over. The game over says that you failed to accomplish a task and have no more lives. Perhaps it was that Mario couldn't save Peach, Link couldn't save Zelda, Spider-Man couldn't save MJ. Whatever it is, a game over can make any sane person turn beat red and want to throw their control through a window sometimes. What if we were to look at the game over from a different perspective though? Is it possible for a game over to be a good thing? How about a spiritual game over? Let me explain: In today's society there is so much stuff out there that consumes our time. Games, TV, social media, social life, extracurricular activities, and so on. If we don't keep our priorities straight, any number of those things can take away from the thing where we need to spend the most time and that is our relationship with God. I'll be the 1st to tell you that there have been times in my life when I've let some of those things take up more of my time than spending time with God. Jesus told us in Matthew 6:33 to seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness. That means we put God above all else in our lives. This is where we apply the game over. In this case it doesn't mean we failed or ran out of lives it means we decide to take time to put down our phones and tablets, we close our laptops, we turn the TV off, and we spend that

time with God. We pray, praise and worship Him, and simply give Him what He wants and that's us, all of us. I'm reminded of a song lyric from one of my favorite Christian artists growing up that said wimpy saints won't survive in spiritual warfare. This is so true. We choose to play games in life and before we know it satan has sucked the life right out of our of our spirits. We give into temptation more easily and for some it can lead to that road that Jesus talked about in Matthew 7:13. He said it is broad and leads to destruction. He even said there are many who find this road. In verse 14 he talks about a different road, a narrow road that leads to life and few there are that find it. Many find the broad road and why not? It's easy. You can be lazy and it takes 0 effort. The narrow road though takes hard work. You have to constantly crucify your flesh and keep it under submission. I don't know about you, but I would much rather choose the road that is narrow but leads to life than the one that is wide and leads to destruction. Will it be easy all the time? I'm afraid not. There is no scripture that tells us that but there are plenty that say He will always be with us. He'll never leave you or forsake you. He will hold you in His right hand! So will you join me young man or young lady? Will you join me as we continue through this new year and say game over? Will you join me in putting God 1st like never before and see where He takes us? You're not on this journey alone! God's got you! It's time to tell satan, game over! About The Author

Togetherness – Becoming One
ust when you fellas begin to relax (in the aftermath of Christmas), lean back in your recliners, and immerse yourselves in the football season and playoffs, Valentine’s Day peeks its head just above the horizon and the possibility of more Hallmark Movies becomes a reality! You know she’ll want you to watch them with her, so you sacrifice your own desires and spend that time with her, together. Karen Carpenter made famous the beautiful song, “It’s Only Begun,” with these words: Sharing horizons that are new to us; Watching the signs along the way; Talkin' it over, just the two of us; Workin' together day to day; Together. And when the evening comes, we smile. So much of life ahead, We’ve only just begun. A friend and I were talking recently about “calling,” that unction, nudge, strong urge a person feels from God to pursue a certain path in life. We talked about how important it is for a husband and wife to be together in those decisions; otherwise, it would be very difficult for one to pursue a vocation, ministry, or life’s work alone, without the support of the spouse. When my husband and I were traveling in evangelistic ministry, we were at a church where a dedicated pastor was leading what had been a thriving congregation. The pastor’s wife was not supportive of her husband’s ministry and did not even attend the church services. The effects of

that “un-togetherness” in their marriage could be felt and seen in the congregation. It was sad to experience as a visitor, and no doubt even sadder to be continually in the presence of the disharmony. In a marriage, I firmly believe that if God gives one a dream, a passion, a calling; He will also work with the spouse to be supportive, engaging, and helpful in fulfilling it. Togetherness is far more than romance. It is sharing each other’s hopes and dreams. It’s sticking together when circumstances would try to pull us apart. The prophet Amos asked this question: “Can two walk together, unless they are agreed?” (Amos 3:3). During the summer of my junior year, my parents dropped me off at our church youth camp a few hours earlier than registration. A young man from over 200 miles away also had to be dropped off at camp early. The camp director put the two of us to work helping her prepare for the opening banquet night. The decorations were built around an Indian theme, so Joseph Bathe and I gathered sticks from around the campground and made Indian teepees for the table centerpieces. Little did I know as a teenager in youth camp that the handsome, sensitive, sweet, shy, and quiet boy that I met there would one day become the man of my dreams. I could not know then that God would call him into ministry and would entwine his heart and mine together as partners in His harvest. We have traveled this journey together with its ups and downs, its successes and failures, its stresses and its joys. I am proud to be his life-long companion and to have served side by side with him in ministry through the bad times and glad times, through all the trials, miles, and smiles. But we could not have done it if we hadn’t been in it together. One day, this joint journey we’ve made on earth will end and we will be together in heaven. Someone once said, “If there is no marriage in heaven, my spouse is sure going to be my best buddy!” My friends, the important thing is to be best buddies in your marriage here and now! And when life’s sun sets, you’ll be together once again.

It has been said that “Music is what feelings sound like.” Hans Christian Anderson said “Where words fail, music speaks.” Longfellow said “Music is the universal language of mankind.” I was given the gift of piano lessons by my parents, had the opportunity for some music training in college, and had godly ministers of music in my life through my church; all these opened the door to music for me. Today music is an indispensable part of my life. I feel the presence of God through music as it gives words to my feelings and emotions. It enters into my worship and praise for my Savior. Music relieves the stresses of life and helps express love and admiration for those dear to me. As I sing the HymnsCompositions written directly to God, the songs of the Psalms, and the spiritual songs about the Christian life, I am once again reminded of all God has blessed me with. One of my favorite ways of enjoying music is with children, especially preschoolers. They express music with their whole being! They are honest and uninhibited in their joy and expression of music. A preschooler who senses the wonder of their surroundings, of God’s creation, and expresses their feelings about God through music is worshipping! A recent experience that drew me into worship of my Savior took place in my own family room. My three preschool grandsons were visiting and were playing with Legos when out of the blue Brody begin to sing the chorus of “Lord, I need You” and his twin brothers fell into step singing along. As I listened to those little voices singing “Lord, I need You, Oh I need You, Every

hour I need You, My one defense, my righteousness, Oh God, How I need You,” I felt the presence of God as He tugged at my heart for me to take a moment to express that very thought back to Him. That sweet refrain from little voices fostered a moment of worship in my heart that crescendoed throughout the day. My soul was calmed and I was reminded of the power of music to speak to the soul all while engaging in the simplest tasks of the day.
As you go through your day embrace music, let God speak to you, let your voice give Him praise and thanksgiving for all He has done and is doing for you. 1 Chronicles 16:9 says, “Sing to Him, sing praise to Him, tell of all His wonderful acts.” Johann Sebastian Bach said it best, “The aim and final end of all music should be none other than the glory of God and the refreshment of the soul.” Let music express the thoughts of your heart today!

Leave! n Matthew chapter 9, Jesus demonstrates divine authority over humanity with the story of first healing a societal outcast and second, healing the young daughter of a prominent leader. In this same chapter the reader is reminded that Jesus heals, calls us to be disciples, teaches, restores, and commands believers and non-believers to come into alignment with His Kingdom purposes. This alignment of humanity with a divine Kingdom requires that humanity submits to divine authority. An interesting point in this parable is that while on his way to heal the apparently deceased daughter, Jesus was interrupted by a desperate woman. This woman (who was considered unclean) pushed through the crowd to get close to Jesus. Finally, she was able to touch his outer robe resulting in Jesus responding to her by immediately healing her. She had a personal encounter with Jesus. Perhaps, this delay caused Jesus to arrive at the leader’s house later than anticipated. Evident by the mourners and flute players already in position to lament. When Jesus arrived, He looked in the face of death and said to the crowd “leave.” The crowd’s immediate response was laughter and mockery. But according to Matthew 9:25, the crowd was put outside and Jesus took the young girl by the hand and she got up. She had a personal encounter with Jesus. Recently, I read through Matthew 9 with the intent to see what the crowd did not see. I wanted to know

what this passage teaches about faith and action. Here are a few thoughts on these two separate but lifealtering encounters with the Messiah. Personal Faith Being an outcast has to be a difficult experience. Leftovers become your portion. Rejection becomes the norm. Crowds push you out. Hope is a reality but seems it’s only for others. Life is usually lived down in the gutter always looking up but unable to walk upright. But, for the desperate, all it takes is the willingness to push past the norms to the promise. Faith for Others I know as a father and grandfather that the worst pain is the pain that your children and grandchildren experience—that you can’t fix. This must have been the case for the father of this young girl. This dad, a community leader, demonstrated humility and desperation when he asked Jesus to come to his house to heal his daughter. It seems to me that everyone fits in one of these two categories at some point. Either you are desperate or you need someone else to be desperate for you. In either case, the one-word command of the Messiah in Matthew 9:24 “Leave” is a good proclamation for everyone to say to the enemy of our souls. Humanity and spirits of darkness both have to submit to divine authority when we act on our faith. About The Author

love holidays! I think it's good to have them. I believe they are necessary. As we approach a new month, in our minds, we start to think, what is happening in our lives for that time. The first thing that triggers in our thoughts is the holidays. We mentally go through the monthly calendar and try to recollect what holiday is coming up, which leads us to scheduling our time with plans, activities, and events around these days. When we ponder about the month of February, immediately what comes to mind is Valentine's Day. Valentine’s Day and February go hand in hand. We start to make a mental list of ideas of gifts to buy and things to do for people we love. Valentine's Day is a day to remind us to love. I have heard some people go on to say that Valentine's Day is just a Hallmark Day, to make money. That could be very well true, but I also think it's a day that needs to keep us in the flow of love. Life can move quickly and people can get so consumed with the cares of the world. It's very easy to get negligent and passive in showing our love. Valentine's Day is a great way to helping people stay focused on what really matters in life. Some may have a difficult time expressing their love or affection for others and this holiday is a tool used to learn what and how others display their love. However, love doesn't start in February; it’s just a continuation and a transition from one holiday in December called Christmas to another holiday in February. Christmas also emphasizes love. As we

remember all the activities and events from two months ago, we are reminded of what the original theme of that holiday is: God's love. “For God so loved the world, He gave his only gotten son” (John 3:16). From Christmas to February, we are reminded of the wide range of love, starting with Gods love for us and continuing with our love for others. Holidays are good prompters to help us to follow the word of God. Somewhere in our mind, we transition our thought process from receiving God's love to responding with God’s love to others. Let's just think, for a minute, what it would be like if we didn’t have any holidays to celebrate? That could be a scary thought. Yes, we could save a lot of money, but how would it be for your well-being as a person? That, to me, would be a very selfish and boring life and could lead to some serious consequences to our society. So, take the opportunity this February to celebrate a holiday that encourages love, to share your love, but not just for the easy people in your life. I challenge you to also use this holiday to love those that are unloving, the hardest kind of love. John 13:34-35 says, “A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.
