grandma through her stroke,” your cries for help still matter. God makes your pleas for help His first priority because He loves us. He doesn’t care if you are asking Him to do something big or little; He will be overjoyed that you are asking Him to help you.

It’s okay if you don’t know how to say something. Just get all the words out, and God will make sense of it all. It is okay if you don’t have anything to say. God understands. Don’t feel like you can’t ask anybody else besides God to help you. If you can’t ask God to do something, for Heaven’s sake, ask somebody! But you should also ask God for guidance. Read your Bible and pray every day. Remember, God made you special, and he loves you very much! Matthew 7:7-8 says, “Ask, and it shall be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.”

It’s Simple, Not Easy MONEY MATTERS

W
e often think of the words “simple” and “easy” as synonymous, but that’s not exactly true, especially when it comes to managing our finances. There is a big difference between knowing what to do and having the self-discipline and long-term mindset to actually follow through by making wise financial decisions. Many people have pointed out the similarities between personal finance and physical fitness. With physical fitness, it’s simple to know you should burn more calories every day than you take in, eat fewer fattening foods, etc. But doing it isn’t exactly “easy.” Here are some financial examples. It’s simple to track where your money goes every month. Just check your banking app on your cell phone or your bank’s website on your computer. It’s also simple to write a monthly budget showing where you want your money to go. And it’s simple to set up automatic bank drafts every month to direct money into your investment and savings accounts. But is it easy? It’s not easy to realize your monthly budget shows that you can’t eat out again this week or go on that weekend getaway with your friends. It’s not easy to tell your friends “no” (though it is simple—just say it). It’s not easy to keep driving your reliable but ugly car when everyone you know is driving a brand-new car with expensive monthly payments for the next five or six years. And it’s not easy to discipline yourself to delay gratification today in order to ensure a secure financial future. In other words, the steps to financial health are all pretty simple in terms of being convenient, not very time-consuming, and not requiring a lot of technical knowledge. But it’s not always easy to deny our ego-wants, to resist keeping up with the neighbors,

He and his wife Esmerelda have three children. and to explain to friends that getting out of debt and investing for the future must take priority over that fun trip to the Caribbean. To accomplish our financial goals and establish healthy financial habits, we may need to change how we think about money and how we handle money. We’ve all heard the definition of “insanity” as “continuing to do what you’ve always done, and expecting to get a different result.” So, here’s a novel idea that I hope you’ll try for yourself. Try making your budget by working “backwards” this time. Most people make a budget by listing all of their monthly expenses, and then seeing if there’s anything left over after all the bills are paid. If there is any money left over, only then do most people think of saving and investing. If the budget reveals there’s no money left over after all the bills are paid, only with this realization do they start to look at where they can cut expenses. Instead, try doing it backward by writing down the amount of money you want or need to save and invest and give each month, and then list your monthly expenses and try cutting as you go to make your saving/investing/giving numbers work. This prioritizes your own financial health (saving, investing, giving) instead of other people’s financial health (the mortgage company, the utility company, the cell phone company, the cable TV company, the credit card company). Obviously, I’m not suggesting you don’t pay your bills on time. Instead, I’m suggesting that by starting each month’s budget with your own financial priorities (building wealth for the future), you’re more likely to understand the need to make some sacrifices today by cutting your expenses in order to create a more financially secure tomorrow.

My wisdom says... “There is no need to worry about that.” “You won’t even remember what they said a week from now.” “If they don’t want to play with you, it is their loss.” But their hearts are only bringing a limited number of years to the situation, and their hurts and disappointments are just as real as our disappointments when we are overlooked for a position at work or didn’t get invited to the big event. hen did you fall in love with Jesus? I fell in love with Him at the well. As a good Southern girl who was raised in church, I guess the proper answer
should be when I was 4 and learned the words to “Jesus Loves Me.” However, if I am being honest, I never fully grasped His love for me until I was in my 30s when Beth Moore introduced me to Jesus at the well. Of course, I had heard the story, but I finally understood the meaning. Jesus was journeying through Samaria, tired from his travels, and found himself at “Jacob’s Well,” where He asked a Samaritan woman for water. Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the Messiah, actually talked with a Samaritan woman—according to the cultural standards of that time, she was unclean by her ethnic background and unclean by her choices in life. Yet, He did not condemn her, nor did He shame her. He saw her and defended her. He loved her in spite of her choices. Now, this is the Jesus who touched my soul: the revolutionary who changed the world with His radical love, a love that does not excuse our bad choices but rather invites us to walk in freedom from them. As I researched the abortion rate for my last article, the 40 million lives that were lost to abortion over the last 40 years were astounding, heartbreaking even. However, since that article, I have not been able to stop thinking about the 40 million women and men who made the choice to have an abortion. I find this statistic equally astounding and equally heartbreaking. These men and women have had to continue their lives with the weight of their choice. One can only imagine the “what if” scenarios that have played out in their minds over their fateful decisions. The current Kane Brown song “What If” uses that phrase 37 times. Can you imagine how many “what ifs” in a lifetime a young girl might ask about her decision to end a pregnancy or a scared teenage boy on the verge of being a father might ask himself, thinking that the abortion was the only option? Enter Jesus at the well. Enter Jesus, who opened the Samaritan woman’s eyes to “Living Water.” Enter the Jesus who told her that “Whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst again” (John 4:14). As Christians, we can be quick

Come to the well and meet Jesus so that you never thirst again. It is time to stop asking “what if.” “Jesus loves me—this I know, for the Bible tells me so.”

Food has brought people together since the beginning of time. Jesus brought people together by feeding thousands and even referred to Himself as the “Bread of Life.” If you are trying to be health-conscious, the holidays don’t have to leave you feeling deprived and left out. Here are some tips on how to enjoy your favorite holiday traditions without losing track of your goals. 1. Eat your veggies and protein first. Don’t fool yourself into believing you can sustain a restrictive diet plan throughout the whole holiday season. The truth is, the more you feel deprived, the more likely you are to overindulge. Fill up a plate with some good vegetables, fruit, and protein, and then go back with a small dessert plate and choose small samplings of your desired sweets or dishes. This will keep you full with the healthier options but still give you a taste of your favorites. 2. Bring something healthy yourself. Look up a new tasty recipe with your favorite vegetable or lean meat to help set yourself up for success. This will give you options in case the table is filled with fried, buttered, and breaded entrees. It’s best to make your choices ahead of time instead of when you’re right there staring at Granny’s fried chicken and your aunt’s famous macaroni and cheese. 3. Join the kids outside for some playtime. Channel your inner child and get moving! Don’t let yourself sit inside all day after eating a large meal. Find creative ways to get moving either before or during the event. You may even be able to start a new tradition where the whole family takes an evening stroll after dinner or incorporates a little activity into your gift exchange game. This year, the city of Dalton even has a “Beast B4 the Feast” 5K or 1-mile run on Thanksgiving morning! 4. Choose an accountability partner. This one is important for any plan to improve your health! Having other people in your life who understand your daily struggles can make a huge difference. Let them know your plans for success and try to get them to partner with you to

make good choices and keep each other from straying too far from the goal. 5. Stick with water. Most people don’t take into account how many extra calories and sugar are packed into their favorite drinks. That one cup of punch, soda, or sweet tea can seriously go against all the hard work you’ve put in. Just choose water if you want to splurge on your favorite dessert at the party.
6. Try to remember Christmas is a single day in December. The holidays do NOT include all the days in between unless you let them! Keep up with your exercise routine the best you can, and try to include any visiting family. The Bradley Wellness Center has weekly guest passes available so that those traveling can come with you! Plan ahead of time which events you’re going to allow yourself to splurge on so that it doesn’t end up turning into an everyday occurrence. From “Why” To “How” hen my children were young, they would ask “why” questions. Why do birds fly, cows walk, and snakes slither? My favorite reply was, “God made it that way.” At some point, the questions became more difficult. Why do kids make fun of me? Why does my teacher humiliate me because of my faith? Why do the youth at church not accept me? The “God made it that way” reply no longer answered their questions. As an adult, it is easy to be a “why” person. Why does
my friend have cancer? Why do children have to suffer? Why do I have pain that is not relieved? Why can’t I have children? Why do bad things happen to good people? Why does my church have to do that kind of music? Why does the pastor go 10 minutes late? Why can’t I afford the car I want? Why doesn’t God heal me? Job is NOT my favorite book of the Bible. It never answers my “why” questions. Why did God allow satan* to come into His presence? Why did God bring Job to satan’s attention? Why did Job’s friends sit with him only to offer such hurtful advice later? When God answered Job, why did He not really answer him? God does not always tell us these answers in His Word. In searching the Scriptures, I find no promise of an

easy life. I find that life is like a bed of roses…a few flowers among many, many thorns. Paul was given a thorn in the flesh. John was beheaded. Daniel was thrown to the lions. The disciples were tortured and killed, as were many Jesus’ followers, and this is still happening today. Changing my perspective from “Why” to “How” takes the focus off of me and turns it to God. How can God’s love be ministered to others during this challenge? How can I continue to serve God even when I am in pain? How can this grief drive me deeper into God’s love? How can I live my life at this very moment to deny satan and to bring glory and honor to God? Isn’t that the real question? “How can I glorify God?” 1 Thessalonians 5:14-24 gives the answer: “And we urge you, brothers, admonish the idle, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with them all. See that no one repays anyone evil for evil, but always seek to do good to one another and to everyone. Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. Do not quench the Spirit… hold fast what is good. Abstain from every form of evil… He who calls you is faithful; He will surely do it.” That’s the “how.” We can walk out these verses because He who calls us is faithful. HE WILL DO IT. In the end, the “how” question brings us to the answer to “why”…to glorify God. *I prefer not to give satan any glory, therefore I choose not to capitalize his name.

Today (as an adult), I look at present society and the present-day Church, and I find myself
asking the same question. Even though I cannot always answer that for those who surround me, I have realized it is my duty to ask it about myself on a daily basis. The ground beneath my feet: does it make a difference? It may not always seem significant, but it is what I have been made responsible for! 30 // December 2019
2 Samuel 23 speaks of Adino, who defended his pea patch against 800 enemy soldiers. Really!? A pea patch!? Well, some would have tucked tail and run, but this fierce warrior of God took what God made him responsible over very seriously, and by the end of the day, Adino had pea soup while 800 enemies lay as fertilizer! The next time the devil tempts you to back up even half an inch, instead of asking, “Why not?” because it seems so minuscule, ask yourself, “Why should I?” If it’s important to the enemy, then obviously, that cunning adversary sees great value in the very thing he is attempting to make you discount! Wars are won by battles and battles by individual tactical decisions. It all counts. This is why in everything that you do, do for the glory of God!

Find New Gifts To Give
t’s Christmas gift list time again. As followers of Christ, maybe we should think about giving gifts every day of the year. You may say, “I can’t afford to give gifts every day!” I’m not speaking about the kind that comes from your Christmas Club account but the kind that comes from empty pockets. My parents were a not-so-young, yet long-married, couple just starting out in their own home for the first time with a new baby girl. Even though empty pockets were a frequent fashion accessory for them, they were by no means destitute because my father was a hard worker and my mother was a hard saver. Those were gifts they gave each other. They, especially my mother, counted every penny, sacrificing pleasures most couples take for granted in order to give me a better life. Their pockets may have been empty, but their hearts and their ambitions were full. My mother gave me the gift of loving to read. This was a treasure she never possessed for herself but willingly gave me through many trips to the library and many hours spent upon her lap reading “The Little Engine That Could” and “Dapper and Gay,” the story of two ponies that I eventually memorized verbatim before I could read myself. There is a saying, “Readers make writers.” Her gift to me was reading. My gift to her is my newfound adventure in writing, writing the very words you are reading. I wonder if she can read them from Heaven. My father also shared gifts from his empty pockets. I’m not sure he ever knew the dictionary definition of “feminist,” yet he was the best example of one: not the militant kind that can be pro-choice and anti-masculine, but the kind that thought women were smart and capable. He thought his girls, my mother and myself, could do anything

Ma’am,” “Thank you,” and “You’re welcome” are just the beginning. Good manners can be the possession of a pauper, but they can clothe that pauper in the garments of a prince. Never say that you can’t afford to give someone a gift. Compliments and praise are deposits put into a person’s self-esteem account that can draw untold dividends for a lifetime. Insults are withdrawals from an empty soul. Words can be gifts. The best three from humans are, “I love you.” Jesus had no pockets when He hung on the cross, yet He gave the best gift ever: salvation wrapped in three words. “It is finished.” About The Author

Ingredients • 1 box of yellow cake mix (all ingredients it calls for on the back of the box) • 1 - 11-oz. can mandarin oranges • 1 - 8-oz. container of whipped cream, thawed • 1 - 20-oz. can crushed pineapple with juice • 1 - 3.5-oz. package instant vanilla pudding mix

reheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour a 9x13 inch pan. In a large bowl, combine cake mix, eggs, oil, and mandarin oranges with juice. Beat until smooth. Pour batter into prepared pan. Bake in the oven 35-40 minutes or until the center of the cake comes out clean. Allow to cool. To make the topping: In a large bowl, beat together whipped topping, pineapple with juice, and dry pudding mix until blended. Spread on the cake. This recipe is simple and good. It is a special cake to my family. This was a cake my grandmother would make for the holidays, and we would always look forward to it. I hope you enjoy it as much as we have.
