Letter from the Editor

O

ne of the most popular Christmas songs says, “Joy to the world, the Lord is come.” Because of the things we have to do during the holiday season—shopping, decorating, attending banquets, parties, and other church activities—sometimes Christmas includes everything but joy. So do we really celebrate Christ’s coming with joy? A few years ago I read a book by Jeff Walling titled Daring to Dance With God that explained how we discover early in life the importance of holding on to something—our mother’s hand, the coffee table, or anything else our little hands can grasp. This insecurity is seen later in life as we cling to control and security for all we’re worth. We clutch power and property till our knuckles turn white. So the very act of celebrating demands that we first let go of everything else and take God’s hand. When we do, three things must be released before the dancing can begin. 1. We must let go of fear. But where shall I put this fear if I do let go of it? The apostle Peter encourages us to put it in the only place that’s fitting—the Father’s hand. “Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you” (5:6-7). 2. We must let go of the reins. The moment we truly let go and give God control is when we feel the joy and release that only comes when we’re no longer in charge. Releasing control brings freedom, energy, and drive to dance in celebration with the One to whom we’ve resigned the wheel. 3. We must let go of guilt. Feeling guilty and dancing are mutually exclusive activities. Dancing is joyous by nature; guilt is depressing by nature. This may sound easier to do than letting go of the reins, but many Christians find it the most difficult release of all. When we fall, He goes to great lengths to restore us to an upright position—but only if we take His hand. If we adopt an “I’d-rather-do-it-myself” attitude, we block His hand from rescuing us. Even if our knees are bruised from stumbling and our shins bloody from unexpected tumbles, we can depend on Him to correct every “misstep,” because He loved us enough to become one of us. So during this Christmas season, go ahead . . . celebrate! Accept His hand. The dance floor is empty and He’s waiting for you! The Grinch that Stole Christmas Christmas without Jesus Christ is not Christmas.

S

by Dr. Greg Collins

ome of my favorite memories of this time of year from when I was a child growing up is of all the different Christmas programs that were on television. Between Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and Frosty the Snowman, a child’s imagination was elevated to a whole other level. My favorite, an all time classic, is Dr. Seuss’s “How the Grinch stole Christmas.” To sum up the movie, the Grinch believes that everyone’s joy and excitement of Christmas is based on gifts, food, lights, and decorations. He thinks that if he steals all of those things, Christmas will not come. By the end of the movie, he learns that the joy of Christmas is in the hearts of the Who’s, and not in all the superficial things surrounding it. Sadly, for many today, Christmas is no longer a joyous, happy time for family and friends to gather together and celebrate the birth of Jesus. It has become a time of hustle and bustle—running from store to store with angry shoppers swiping the credit card machine, and the sound of the cash register. Starting the day after Thanksgiving (a day that we proclaim how thankful we are for what God has provided) to right up until Christmas Eve, people are so engrossed in the newest clothing trends, game systems and technology and the fact that the stores stay open until the late hours of the night. Those material things have taken priority over what

6 // December 2016

used to be celebrated the most, Jesus. Sadly, the Grinch has stolen the idea of Christmas and unfortunately replaced it with an idea of worldly-ism. I preached a message several years ago that pointed out how the Grinch has stolen Christmas. It was accomplished through materialism, time constraints, and attacking what should be the object of Christmas, Jesus Christ and the Church. When we get so fixated on the material things or stressed-out over the time limits by rushing around, we quickly lose the joy of the season. If we allow Christ to be removed from the season, we have lost the purpose of it altogether. Don’t allow the Grinch to steal your Christmas, by stealing the true reason for the season. This Christmas, celebrate Christ and let your joy be centered on Him. Take time to be thankful for the gift of salvation that God has given us. We need to make sure to teach the next generation that Jesus is the reason for the season. Make family, friends, and church a priority and be sure not to allow the Grinch of the world to steal your joy this year. Merry Christmas! Dr. Greg Collins has served over 20 years in ministry. A graduate of Andersonville Seminary, Dr. Collins’ ministry has impacted thousands of people around the country and world through TV, print and internet outreaches. He also preaches and teaches in many venues and crusades around the world. Most Sundays he can be found in the Pulpit of Faith Worship Center in Chatsworth, Georgia.

Family: The Best Part of Christmas

W

Creating traditions will help lessen the stress of the season and it will become the favorite part of your family Christmas. by Brenda Dedmon

hat is the best part of Christmas for your family? Do the holidays bring out the best or the stress for your family? Do you find there is somewhere you or members of your family need to be for a Christmas event every night? By the time Christmas Eve and Christmas Day arrives, are you too tired to enjoy the holiday? What can you do to stop this endless cycle of stress for your family? A good place to begin is to make your family time a priority for your family. This may require you to refrain from accepting every invitation you receive and choose only those that will contribute to your family’s well being during the holidays. Traditions are an important and powerful thing for families. So begin with making plans to create traditions for your family that will bring you closer together. Traditions take time and commitment and therefore, remind you to stop the busy cycle of life long enough to reconnect and build bonds with your family. A study shows that children love traditions and rituals. Dr. Martin V. Cohen, Ph.D. at Cornell Medical Center states, “Kids find rituals fascinating—artistically, spiritually, and emotionally.” Children find a certain security and solace in something that gives them a sense of belonging and comfort. The holiday season brings a sense of awe in not only the family bonding but also of the importance of Jesus—and the celebration of His birthday. Traditions

20 // December 2016

are a great way to create family bonding and pass down family values to your children.

1. Traditions Create Legacy

Traditions are a great way to pass down stories of faith and customs through the generations. Choosing a tree and decorating it is a great opportunity to talk about the evergreen as a reminder of the everlasting life we have in Jesus. Singing Christmas carols as a family will teach the importance of rejoicing that Jesus was born.

2. Traditions Are Symbolic

One of the most important purpose of traditions in the Christian faith is to be reminded of Jesus as our Savior. The nativity reminds us that God came in human form as a baby to show His love and grace for the world. The gifts of the three wise men is a reminder of the importance to worship and adore the Christ child. Do you have traditions for your family during the holidays? Make this the year to create a tradition for your family to build a closer bond and teach your children how important your faith is to you. An easy tradition to begin is to buy a nativity set. Place the empty manager in a prominent place in your family room. Each evening read a part of the Christmas Story (Luke 2:1-18, Matt. 2: 1-11) and let the children add the different pieces as it relates to the story. Reverend Brenda Dedmon is director of the Children's Learning Center, First Baptist of Dalton, GA.

Gò0dNews for Teens Teens and Their Family Lives

In a society where the family model is so distorted and under attack, followers of Christ must continue to strengthen the family dynamic in our homes, which begins with reaching out to the teens and showing them the importance of family.

arents, do you remember when your child would come home from elementary school and tell you

every detail of their day at school? Sometimes it would take thirty minutes or longer and you would just nod or say, “Oh really?” or “Wow, that’s great honey?” But, your child is grown into a teenager and he or she is glued to a cell phone. The only answer you can get from your teen is, “It was okay” or “Yeah.” All you want is to communicate, but teens are consumed with their friends at school and social media. Teens, do you remember that you spent every waking moment with your parent(s) and you never wanted to leave their side? You would wake up early in the morning and crawl into bed with your mom and dad to spend some time with them? However, now, your parents are always on your case about school, chores, being active in the youth group, or the other activities that they want you to do while all that you want is to hang out with your friends and to spend time away with them. Are you to a point that you really don’t know what’s going on in your family or that your family doesn’t know what is going on in your life? What happened from the time you/your teenager left elementary school and entered into middle/high school? Once teens begin to find their friend groups who become their primary source of social time (teens spend more time at school and extracurricular activities than they do with their parents), spending time with their parents and

family is boring or that they cannot be themselves like they can around their friends. Around other teens, they are able to find individuals that have the same taste in music, clothing, and hobbies unlike their family that they view as too old and out of touch with society, or if they have siblings that are younger, they’re annoying. Older siblings, are not around because their friend groups consume them. Is it too late for family members to reach into the lives of their teens? No, let me suggest some simple actions parents can take to reconnect with their teens or vice-versa. • Set aside a designated time to spend time together and do something that both parties will enjoy. Living in a society where busyness consumes our lives, picking a time to spend together will change the family dynamic. • Build trust with one another that leads to opening up to each other. Students need to hear that their parents struggle and have or are overcoming obstacles in their own lives. • Reveal unconditional love that Christ showed humanity on the cross. Writing a simple “I love you” note or saying it will change the hearts of the family. “Train up a child in the way he should go, Even when he is old he will not depart from it.” (Pro. 22:6 NASB)

A New Opportunity

Imagine my surprise when one day in February 1986,

a florist who ran a local shop called me with a business proposition: “Would I be interested in working for her with the possibility of becoming a floral designer?” Although I knew her well as she had always been the one our family called for our floral needs, I was completely surprised with her question. It was true I loved colors and décor, and music had always been my passion, yet I had never considered working in the floral industry. However, when she said she felt I had a hidden creative talent for design, I jumped at the opportunity. I was more than ready to explore the right side of my brain! My vacuum cleaner career ended as a new door opened. In the beginning, I was a messenger, a stock boy, and a supplier. As my days were spent putting up stock and delivering vases, containers, greenery, and flowers to other designers, I quickly realized that this was a prime time of learning for me. I became a keen observer and a master student, learning the names and different varieties of more flowers than I ever knew existed. I learned how to answer the phone and take orders, and how to make deliveries on a timely basis. I learned how to combine flowers, how to add fillers, and how to design it all together into an arrangement.

Preparing for Valentine’s Day became fifteen plus hours a day. I remember working until 3 a.m. for several days just getting ready. On the heels of that special day, we have proms in April, and, in the next month, we have one of the busiest days in the floral industry—Mother’s Day. These were definitely the “burning-the-midnight-oil” days. In 1989, our beautiful daughter, Lauran DeSha, was born. The next year I started my own florist and named it DeSha’s. Two years later our third child, Carrington Scott, joined our family. Although I enjoyed being on my own, I felt the timing was not right for our young family of five, so

prepared for the time when I would.

Accepting God’s Love and Guidance

I began to feel I was pointed in a positive direction in my professional decisions, and on August 30, 1985, at 7:00 p.m., my personal life was definitely looking good when Pam Ledford and I decided to join our lives together. And what a happy couple we were when our firstborn child, Cody Ryan, was born in 1987. I also knew I better know

In 1992, my life became complete as I gave my heart

what I was doing with my career choices because my family depended on my decisions! After a few years, I moved to another flower shop. By this time I was beginning to tap into my creative side. I attended classes given by wholesale floral designers and read everything I could find about the business. In these beginning years, I began to realize what made up a successful floral business.

Intense Work and Long Hours

One realization I made quickly concerned the holidays.

For families, holidays were days of fun and rest, but not for a florist. They were days of intense work and long hours.

still waters”, I knew that God had placed me in the green pasture of the floral industry. Looking back through the years, I could see God’s hand leading and guiding me in my life all along, to the place I was in now. I knew I was very blessed. Another blessing was the tremendous support I had from my mother Thelma Akins and my wife. Together, Pam and I raised our children. Many times during our early journey, I would drag them to the shop as early as 4 a.m. and staying other nights as late as midnight. My children all say they cut their teeth at the flower shop! But we made it work, and with God’s love and guidance, our family prospered.

Favorite Projects

Working with my costumers is such a wonderful part of

my job. One of my favorite projects is designing weddings. Sitting down with the bride and helping her plan her dream day is fun for me. And being there on her special day and seeing our plans materialize will always rank high on my “I Love To Do List.” Preparing for special occasions and celebrations takes time, but I know the time is worth it when I see the joy it brings. Another really wonderful part of my job is helping clients put that finishing touch on their homes. I always enjoy going on-site to create new floral designs that compliment their home’s décor. And while the Christmas season is always such a stressful and crazy time for me, it is also so rewarding. It begins in October as I start scheduling times and making plans to decorate homes and offices for my clients, and although sometimes I’m not sure how we get it done, we have decorated as many as ten homes a year. I enjoy seeing those homes sparkle with the Christmas spirit! Yet with the really upside aspects of my business, there are always times that can be very difficult. Designing arrangements for funerals, especially for longtime customers is hard, but realizing I am bringing comfort to their loved ones helps so much. I cannot say enough about how much I appreciate the loyal customers who have been with me for years. I am

In 2000, my cousin and I opened Unique Florist in Dalton, and in 2003, I bought Bobbie’s Florist and merged the two shops. In 2008 when the bottom dropped out of the economy, times were really tough. Making a living for my family was very stressful, but I had to keep reminding myself that God had been and was still in control. I was able to keep the shop, and in time see it again become a thriving business. While working in the florist industry today, I continue to work long hours, but I know I am able to create designs that I am proud of. I am committed to remaining a designer who not only recognizes what works, but also who is in tune with creating new, fresh looks for my customers. I enjoy traveling to the Atlanta Floral Mart each January through March to see the new colors that will be out for spring and Christmas. In September, local suppliers put on shows that always spotlight the industry and renew my love for what I do.

forever thankful for their support, and I value so much their trust in making me their floral designer. I know they have helped make my business one that I am very proud of. And the door is always open for new clients to come aboard; we do love to see new faces come in our shop!
