wo of the prevailing themes we find in our culture today are that it is ok to make fun of and marginalize Christianity, and that morality is completely dependent on personal preference and outlook. We find these two themes are perpetuated

by Hollywood, main-stream media, social media, and a variety of groups that now dominate the social and political discourse. It is always interesting to me that most social settings around the country refuse to speak against some groups of faith, crying political correctness but take no issue with making fun, speaking against, or even accusing Christians of being bigots, or hatefilled racists. Within these two culture concepts we have witnessed the decaying moral fiber of our country that once took pleasure in its ability to be morally good and the promotion of human dignity for all peoples.

Recently there was a sitting US Senator who took to task a man during a senate confirmation hearing over the fact that he was a bible-believing Christian. This senator went on to say that by being a Christian, he should be disqualified from public office. The standard of our society is being derogated and our moral fiber is at an all-time low in the so-called name of civil rights.

The lines of right and wrong are being blurred by an ideology of self and a prevailing desire to remove any reference of God, especially Jesus Christ from the public spectrum.

Let me share some quotes of our founding fathers.

The country’s first two presidents, George Washington and John Adams, were firm believers in the importance of religion for republican government.

One official Library of Congress statement says, “...both the legislators and the public considered it appropriate for the national government to promote a nondenominational, nonpolemical Christianity.”

When we take away the moral code of the Holy Bible, we become a nation prone to follow the corrupt desires of mankind. The inherit nature of man is toward sinfulness. Jeremiah 17:9 says, “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?”

So, as Christians, what should be our response and duty for such a time as this? The easy thing is to do nothing and pretend everything is OK, or sit back and wait until we are personally and directly affected. But what does Jesus Christ direct us to do? Jesus said in Matthew 5:16, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”

As people of the book, we must stand for truth.

Share the love of God through the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Be the light, and the salt God has called us to be. Be the voice, the hands and the feet of Jesus.

erbal abuse is something that we all have experienced at one point or another in our lives.

Whether it is a friend, spouse, family member, or even a perfect stranger, we’ve all been through it. Verbal abuse might not leave a physical scare but it can leave emotional and mental scars. Verbal abuse can create shame within us, a feeling of it being our faults, cause us to try to change ourselves to make things better. We need to understand that any type of verbal abuse is not okay and that Jesus does not want us to have to endure this type of abuse.

The Word tells us that “For as he thinks within himself, so he is” (Proverbs 23:7); it begins in the mind.

What a person thinks in their mind and heart will be reflected in their words and actions. A victim is often the target of angry outbursts, sarcasm, or cool indifference.

Sometimes they are faced with questions such as “What’s wrong with you?” or being told that they are “making a mountain out of a molehill.” It can make you start to believe that it’s just you, but it’s not.

Verbal abuse is hurtful and usually attacks the nature and abilities of the victim. It is name calling, even covertly (involving very subtle comments), blaming and accusing, manipulating and controlling, and it is insidious and will gradually diminish self-esteem. It usually escalates, increasing in intensity, frequency, and variety.

man. Proverbs 22:24 says, “Do not associate with a man given to anger, or go with a hot-tempered man” and Proverbs 29:22 says, “An angry man stirs up strife, and a hot-tempered man abounds in transgression.”

So what do you need to know? First know that God loves you! “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit” (Psalm 34:18).

Know that it’s not your fault and deal with the false guilt you feel (Psalm 51:6). You may feel shame or that something is wrong with you or that you are a bad person, but God has an answer for that, also. Psalm 139:14 says, “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.”

Finally, I want to be clear that it is not okay for anyone to abuse you in that way. It is also ok for you to walk away from that person. For those who experience this in a marriage know that God wants you to submit, but submitting does not mean that you are to allow the abuse to continue. Seek help or counseling, even separation for a while for you both to get healing. Verbal abuse scars can last a lot longer than physical scars and needs to be dealt with in love. There is hope in Christ and freedom (2 Corinthians 3:17).

As a good Southern girl who was raised in church, I guess the proper answer should be when I was four and learned the words to “Jesus Love Me”. However, if I am being honest, I never fully grasped His love for me until I was in my 30s when Beth Moore introduced me to Jesus at the well. Of course I had heard the story, but I finally understood the meaning. Jesus was journeying through Samaria, was tired from his travels and found himself at “Jacob’s Well” where He asks a Samaritan woman for water. Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the Messiah, actually talked with a Samaritan woman - according to the cultural standards of that time she was unclean by her ethnic background and unclean by her choices in life. Yet, He did not condemn her nor did He shame her.

He saw her and defended her. He loved her in spite of her choices. Now this is the Jesus who touched my soul.

He is the revolutionary who changed the world with His radical love - a love that does not excuse our bad choices but rather invites us to walk in freedom from them.

As I researched the abortion rate for my last article, the 40 million lives that were lost to abortion over the last 40 years was astounding, heartbreaking even.

However, since that article I have not been able to stop thinking about the 40 million women and men who made the choice to have an abortion. I find this statistic equally astounding and equally heartbreaking. These men and women have had to continue their lives with the weight of their choice. One can only imagine the “what if” scenarios that have played out in their minds

over their fateful decisions. The current Kane Brown song “What If” uses that phrase 37 times. Can you imagine how many “what ifs’’ in a lifetime a young girl might ask about her decision to end a pregnancy? Or a scared teenage boy on the verge of being a father might ask himself thinking that the abortion was the only option?

Enter Jesus at the well. Enter Jesus who opened the Samaritan woman’s eyes to “living water”. Enter the Jesus who told her that “Whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst again” (John 4:14). As Christians, we can be quick to condemn and quick to judge. But Jesus makes no distinction among our sins, giving us no authority over the degree of one sin over another. The sanctity of life that the Bible declares over an infant’s life is the same sanctity of life proclaimed over the sinner’s life. If you find yourself among the 40 million barely living with your choice, haunted by the “what ifs”, remember that you are a treasure in the eyes of Jesus. I like to call God the ultimate recycler - He will use our choices and if we let Him, Romans 8:28 promises us that “in all things, God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” No one is exempt from the living water He so freely offers. Come to the well and meet Jesus so that you never thirst again. It is time to stop asking “what if.”

The Surprising Facts Behind Holiday Weight Gain

e are all only too aware of the depressing figures of how much weight Americans put on between Thanksgiving and the New Year’s Holiday. Some magazine and newspaper articles make it sound like we are doomed to gain up to 5 to 10 pounds over the next couple months! But the reality is actually much nicer in one sense, and scarier in another.

First the Good News

Researchers from the National Institute of Health actually decided to look into the effect of holiday weight gain and studied the phenomena for one year. And they came up with quite a surprise! The average participant gained less than ½ a pound in the fall, and about ¾ pound the whole holiday season! Fewer than 10% of the subjects gained even 5 lbs. through the holiday season, though most of the participants thought they did!

Then the Bad News

As much of a relief as these figures may be, the researchers uncovered some other surprises.

◊ Those who tended to gain a little bit more over the holidays were those who could least afford to—the already overweight or obese.

This means, if you know you have a problem with sweets and are putting too much weight on around the middle, the holiday season does present special risks you need to prepare for. ◊ More shocking, it appeared

that though about a 1 ¼ pound weight gain in the fall and holiday season was the norm for adults, it was not reversed in the spring

and summer months. In other words, the “creeping weight gain” that tends to afflict the majority of adults is primarily the cumulative effect of small weight gains each fall and holiday season adding up! Ugh!

Action Exercises

Here’s how you can best avoid this trap. ◊ Becoming a regular exerciser – A little taste

here, a second helping there, and the body must work hard to burn off all the extra calories! A 1¼-pound weight gain over 4 months could be prevented by a 1-mile daily brisk walk, and a 15-minute bout with the weights twice a week. And the same weekly routine could keep you slim and trim year after year after year.

◊ Adopting the Boy Scout motto and “Be(ing) Prepared!” – If you know you have a problem with overindulging during the holidays, help yourself out by not having tempting foods around you most of the time. If people give you too much good food, get into the spirit of giving and give the treats to some young people, or others who don’t have a problem with it.

◊ Staying Positive! – Focus on the real meaning

of the holidays and other issues like food will fall into their proper place. Your perceptions can greatly influence your actions. So don’t make the mistake of thinking that pigging out, or overindulging in desserts or liquors over the holidays is “really living” because most people usually feel worse because of it—not better. If you feel like you need to overindulge because it is Thanksgiving or Christmas you probably will. However, if you recognize it as a special time for worship and to be with family first, then it will be easier to avoid overeating.

Remember, an ounce of prevention could be worth a “1 ¼” pound of cure!

Build Your House on the Rock

here is a parable in the Bible about two men who built their own houses. A foolish man went to some sand by a body of water and decided, “Hey, this is a great place to build my house! After all, look at this beautiful scenery!” The man gathered together his materials and began to construct a home, using the shifting sand beneath him as the foundation.

Meanwhile, a wise man looked at that foolish man building his house on a beach. He shook his head and found himself a large rock. This rock was sturdy and magnificent, a true work of art, beautiful in all its ways. It was the sturdiest rock in the land. The wise man decided that he would build his house here, using the solid chunk beneath him as his foundation.

Eventually a mighty storm came through. The storm was a great tempest that terrorized the land.

The wise man stayed within his house that was built on a powerful foundation, safe from the rising waters below. However, the fool had built his house by water.

Not only that, but the very ground beneath him was nothing but constantly moving sand! The water began to flood and before he knew it his house had been swept away.

The wise man who had built his house on a strong foundation had survived the storm, while the fool was left in ruin. This story is symbolic of our spiritual walk with God.

When it comes down to it, life happens. Things change, for better or for worse. The changes can be minuscule, like a light rain coming down. The changes can also be terrifying, coming down like a mighty hurricane. When the storms of life are upon us and we are left no choice but to weather a force that is ready to tear down all it comes across, we must be able to stand.

We must guard ourselves with truth, taking on the “whole armor of God” (Ephesians 6:10-18). Our foundation must be as strong as that wise man’s rock.

We cannot be “wishy washy” in our beliefs, else we will be like the man who built his house on the shifting sand! When you are struck with the powerful element of change, that powerful tempest that seems to turn everything you knew upside down, you must be the one left standing. Otherwise when things get rough you will begin to grow angry and depressed, reverting to who you were before Christ.

Do not be caught unguarded! Take heed now and build up your spiritual defenses so that when the enemy comes, you will be ready. Begin a devotional.

Read your Bible just a little more. Become more involved with your youth group. Choose your foundation wisely and build a mighty fortress for God! services, Alliant quickly realized the need for on-staff bilingual customer service representatives to extend its high standard of customer service to its Hispanic members. Already, over 25 percent of its customer service team is bilingual.

Staying healthy is also an important message Alliant wants to share with its Hispanic members. One way to maintain good health is to take advantage of covered preventive services, which in most cases are paid 100 percent by Alliant Health Plans. Examples of preventive services include annual wellness exams for children and adults, and mammograms for women 40-74 years of age.

Many people are relatively healthy, meaning that they don’t have chronic diseases that they need to manage; they simply need to see a doctor to make sure they are “still on track.”

One of this year’s upcoming challenges is the Open Enrollment period for individuals to select health coverage for 2018. It has been shortened to six weeks, November 1, 2017 to December 15, 2017. To help spread the word, Alliant is working with a Georgia company specializing in Hispanic communications, marketing and educational outreach. With bilingual representatives out and about in the community, they will help educate and inform, explaining how to qualify and enroll AND then use their insurance – such as preventive services. They will also help explain some of the rules of health insurance, which

would like to dedicate this article to all cancer survivors, the ones that are fighting the fight, the ones that have fought the fight, and the ones that have gone to be with the Lord.

As you know hearing the word cancer can completely turn your world upside down. It can be and is a rollercoaster ride. I had cancer, cancer didn’t have me.

Cancer has showed me how fearfully made, wonderful, and unique I am. “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful” (Psalm 139:1). It has shown me how to value life, whether it is good or bad. It has shown me how blessed I am and how I can be a blessing to someone that may not be as strong.

It has given me gratitude and has shown me how to love more openly and freely. God says “this is your suffering,” and now it’s time for you to have all the happiness that life has to offer.

I was emotional because I knew that God wanted to use me for his light to shine. I thank God for trusting me for such a large assignment as this. He wanted me to show others that having cancer is not the end of the story and that cancer can be beaten. God has given me the clarity to see my purpose. My purpose is to pray healing over others and to show others that no matter how big the circumstances are, we can trust and have faith in him. I

want to tell others that you can beat cancer; just trust in the Lord because his word does not lie. Fight and never give the devil room to make you think otherwise. Tell people that what you are going through is a process to get to the next level, and that God wants you to be in the kingdom.

Always keep your focus on the Lord because he is there with you. Say yes to life and no to cancer. Whenever you find yourself doubting and wanting to give up, remember everything you’ve been through and faced and say “the weapon that is trying to form against me will not prosper.”

Have faith and trust God’s word. “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are called according to his purpose” (Romans 8:28). You never know who you might be letting down if you give up. Don’t let it defeat you. Just remember that God chose you to be the light to shine in this situation.

Never tell yourself that you can’t be strong in this anymore tell yourself, “I can, I am, and I will.” “I can do all things through Christ which strengthen me” (Philippians 4:13).

God has shown me how to lean on him and not man. You don’t have to look like what you been though. Through this the glory belongs to God because without God I would have given up a long time ago. Ungratefulness. Isn’t it sad when we sit down at the annual Thursday-Thanksgiving table, we sometimes are only thankful for the shallow stuff that brought us comfort and ease from the year prior? Maybe you have heard or even said, “Thank-you God for this rich food. Thank-you God everyone made it here safely. Thank-you God everyone is doing well.” Is that it? Now it is my turn to ask, “Seriously?!”

A Blessing Challenge

Remember the old song “Make Me a Blessing?” It goes, “Make me a blessing, Make me a blessing; Out of my life may Jesus shine; Make me a blessing oh Savior I pray, Make me a blessing to someone today.”

How many days have passed since you made a difference in someone’s life through being a blessing to them? That song used to be quite popular and sang often in our worship services.

Have you really thought about everything involved in being a blessing to someone every day?

Being a blessing is: B ­– Benevolent L – Loving E – Encouraging S – Sincere S – Supportive I – Insightful N – Nurturing G – Giving Scripture states that it is more blessed to give than to receive. Blessing others is very rewarding. Could it be that being a blessing to others is even more rewarding?

Is there a deeper commitment of spirit involved? I can say bless you all day long and people who hear these words do feel better, but God making us a blessing or being a blessing by his Holy Spirit’s direction has a much deeper meaning.

I must possess a benevolent spirit to truly and honestly be a blessing to others. Being a blessing to others is acting upon a benevolent attitude: one of good will, full of kindness. Being a blessing is loving them in their current state of being. Loving them is not always an easy task, but in God’s love we are able to be a loving person, being a blessing. Once we have the individual’s

attention, we need to continually be encouraging them.

They need to be transformed and renewed in their spirit to be able to move away from their current state of mind towards the mind of Christ. Then they need to know, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that we are truly sincere in our being a blessing to them. Our sincerity will build their trust and confidence in the fact that help has finally arrived.

By this point in the blessing relationship, we need to be supportive of them in all ways. Some areas they will be more able to find for themselves than others. Our supportive actions will be needed in the areas that they are weak. The next part requires knowledge, wisdom, and understanding obtained through the Holy Spirit.

With God’s help, I need to be insightful in when, where, and how I am being a blessing. A word fitly spoken or an act of kindness timely done can make a huge difference in their progress. As the process progresses, we need to be nurturing them along their pathway to success. The old adage says, “Two steps forward and one step backwards” and is true, but through our nurturing, they are still making progress. Until their process is complete and they are capable and willing to be a blessing to others, we must keep on giving, giving, and giving. God is your source of ability. You will never be able to give all of yourself away by being a blessing to others if you don’t allow God to refill you often through his spirit.

To truly be a blessing to others, we must be all of these to the individual we want to bless. Being a successful blessing to others makes others successful in their walk with God. Oh how rewarding it is to see the individual you have poured yourself into becoming a successful Christian, being a blessing to others around them.

Try it. Practice makes perfect. Old timers, let’s show the younger ones how it’s done. To all of us, young and old alike, we need to just be a blessing to others, always.

A Forgotten Tool of Spiritual Warfare (Part 2)

n the last article, we discussed the importance of fellowship as a tool of spiritual warfare. We described how the Roman Soldiers linked their shields side by side to protect each other. This required that they worked together. In Ephesians 6:12-18, Paul talks about the shield of faith. The Greek word for shield is thuros.

The root word for thuros means a door. It is a direct reference to the scutum shield from Roman times.

In order for God’s army to be effective, we must learn to link our faith with the faith of others. Solomon says, “Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm. But how can one keep warm alone? Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken” (Ecclesiastes 4:11-13).

Each of us has strengths and weaknesses. Where we may struggle, others have victory, and vice versa.

Working together helps us to sharpen one another.

When we read through the Bible, we see that God’s people worked together. Moses worked with Joshua and the elders under them. Jesus sent the 70 out two at a time. The Apostles worked together to resolve issues and transact Kingdom business. Paul worked with Timothy and the elders under them.

We were made to work together. It is good to have another perspective. When we fellowship, we impart counsel to one another, often without knowing it. My early days of spiritual growth were spent drinking in what others had to say so I could live God’s way. Many

times people didn’t know what I was going through, but someone would usually say something that I needed to hear right when I needed to hear it!

Godly counsel from those with wisdom is imperative (Proverbs 25:22, 11:14, 26:4). Someone else has the Word for us when we are weary (Isaiah 50:4).

We need encouragement and even correction. People are going through trials and they need clues to help them persevere. We need to pray, study, and even eat together. Jesus did all these things with others.

Will we have differences? Of course we will. The Bible tells us, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another” (Proverbs 27:17). When iron and iron hit each other, there are sparks. When we fellowship, there will be differences of personality, but we mature by working through these differences.

I encourage you all to go to church early. Stay late.

Spend some time getting to know people you don’t know right now. We need each other. Let’s be the Body of Christ to each other and to the world.

“And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching” (Hebrews 10:24-25).
