After all, we are selfish and broken people, who when left to ourselves will just keep living selfish and broken lives. So, that leads us to a question. What is the bond that keeps us together?

or a very large portion of my life, I have lived under the influence of many mighty men and women of valor coming home from the battlefront of war. I first want to say to all the men and women who have served our country faithfully, whether in times of peace or times of war, thank you. We salute and honor all of our veterans, past and present. In the scriptures, we find many heroes of the faith. We find many instances and stories of great men and women of valor such as Rahab, who hid the spies of Israel, or Samson the man who would slay many with the jaw bone of a donkey. Maybe we talk about Moses who would face down a mighty pharaoh or how about Paul, who even at the peril of his own life would not deny Christ. We can write a multitude of accounts of those whose lives have exhibited uncommon valor in their time. To those men who are called by God as the spiritual leaders in our homes, there lies the potential for uncommon valor in us. I have found in my life following Christ, the hardest place to stand for Jesus is among those who know us the best. One of the most difficult places to stand for the truth of God’s word and what is right is among those who see our failures and shortcomings. The problem we face is our definition of uncommon valor. We believe that this uncommon valor is found in few people. We believe that there are only a few who, in difficult situations or circumstances,

can muster up the courage to go forth and walk in uncommon valor. The truth is, the real definition of uncommon valor, is that it is a quality found within that comes to surface despite the circumstance and situation. Most heroes will say they never planned on being a hero. Most will say that they didn’t know that character trait was within them until the need arose. See, those who become heroes do so not because they know what the outcome will be, but that it is more important for them to do something rather than not to do anything at all. Clearly, we are living in a time where men who love God need to stand up for truth and not be afraid to let their light shine before men, even if those who see that light are the ones who we know the best. It takes courage to share your faith; it takes courage to stand for truth and what is right, despite our failures and shortcomings. Shall we do nothing? I think the words of Paul are fitting here: “I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 3:14). Rise up, and press on. It will take courage and uncommon valor, but greater is he that is in you than he that is in the world.

Quinoa Crust Pizza

with Caramelized Onion & Bruschetta Topping Crust 1 cup Quinoa Soaked overnight 4 cloves of garlic chopped 2 tsp salt ½ tsp baking powder 1 to 1 ½ cup water Olive oil Heat oven to 450 degrees. Once heated, add 2 tbsp olive oil in a large cast iron skillet and preheat in oven for 10 minutes. Blend all ingredients in a food processor until it has a pancake batter consistency. Take the skillet out and spread the batter evenly into the pan and cook for 10 minutes. Flip it and cook for an additional 5 minutes.

Caramelized Onion “Sauce” 1 sweet onion 1 tsp salt

Bruschetta Topping 1 tsp pepper 4 cloves garlic chopped ½ pint cherry tomatoes quartered ½ cup chopped fresh basil

Slice the onions and sauté on medium-high heat with olive oil, salt, and two cloves of chopped garlic. Cook until completely caramelized. Combine the quartered tomatoes, 2 additional cloves of garlic, and chopped basil; season with salt and pepper. Combine the balsamic vinegar and sugar together in a pan and reduce on medium-high heat until a syrup consistency. Assemble the pizza. Spread caramelized onions on crust. Top with bruschetta mixture and drizzle the balsamic reduction on top.

Sometimes God Has To Write It in the Sky ur first (and only) time going to Disney as a family, we had talked to all of our friends who were Disney fanatics. They told us how to make reservations at the resort and the best dinner places around the parks, about the Disney dining plan, about how to ride all the best rides, how to make your dollar go further, what days to do the park hopper, where to see the fireworks and parades, transportation to the park, how to stay late, how to see the characters. These people knew everything. So, with much fear and trepidation I said, “Okay Anita, make the reservation.” My wife did all her homework and made reservations for us. Of course, for the McGinnis clan we have to have enough room to sleep six Anita gets a really great Disney representative on the phone who set us up with adjoining rooms, a reasonable meal plan and park passes for four days all for a reasonable price. We always try to stay positive for our kids. When they are anxious we try to remind them of Philippians 4:6-7, which says, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” However, God usually has to remind me, too. On the long drive to Orlando, I started getting anxious. I was thinking, “We are going to get there and the plans

are going to fall apart.” I was thinking “Wow, I am so Disney ignorant. What happens if we have a terrible time? I will have wasted all this money and all this time and we didn’t get any closer as a family.” We got to “the happiest place on earth” the night before our first park day. I got a few hours of restless sleep at the All-star Value Resort and the next morning I got up and went poolside to do my regular quiet time. So, in my journal I talked to God about my worries and anxieties about us going to the Disney parks for four days with four kids. Finally, in desperation, I wrote, “Okay God, if this is all going to work out, you are just going to have to write it in the sky.” So, we got in the Safari van and headed to the park. As we were driving into the parking lot, the kids said, “Hey Dad, that airplane is writing letters in the sky.” It said, T.R.U.S.T and under it is said, J.E.S.U.S.” So, the rest of the week, I did. I had that peace that guards your hearts and minds. I didn’t need secret insider knowledge of Disney. All I needed was Jesus Now, whenever I get anxious about anything, my wife and kids say, “Hey dad, that airplane is writing words in the sky.”

As mothers, God knows our hearts are tender. He knows as hard as we try, we never stop worrying about our children, fretting over their life choices, and yes, just staring at them. God makes it very clear that He alone is the target and our job as mothers, our true sole purpose, is to be good stewards of our “loan” and relentlessly point our children back to their Heavenly Father. As mothers, we must trust the promise that if we properly “Train up our children in the way they should go, even when they are old they will not depart from it” (Proverbs 22:6).

friend came to visit me recently with her newborn baby and I got to watch the second phase of the miracle of life unfold in front of me. Life itself is the obvious first phase but the natural instincts of a mother with her new baby is the undeniable second phase of the miracle of life. This new mother waited until much later in life to have children but those natural instincts of mothering did not elude her. I watched as she fed her baby, changed his diaper, and interpreted every grunt he made for me. She knew him intimately in just a few short weeks. Much of her time is spent providing for his every need. And when she is not breastfeeding, bathing him, rocking him, or consoling him, like every new mother, she finds herself just staring at him. As I reflected back to my own experience mothering my three children, I came to this conclusion: I honestly don’t think there is anything on this planet that is as equally challenging and rewarding as being a mother. I am pretty sure that I stayed in my “mourning black” for at least six months after my first two headed off for college. Today, with one of my children in college in northern Ohio, one still in middle school, and one exploring the world in Guatemala, how in the world is a mother’s heart supposed to bear it all? I mean for years it is our sole purpose to sustain their life. We feed them, we bathe them, we stare at them, and in the end, we are just supposed to say goodbye to them as they go and find their place in this world? Enter the third phase of the miracle of life: giving them back to God. Just as Abraham marched up that mountain to sacrifice his beloved son Isaac, we too are supposed to trust God with the lives of our children because in the end, they are His. They are ours on “loan” for a very short time but ultimately, He knit them together, He fearfully and wonderfully made them, our children are His masterpiece and in Deuteronomy 6:4-9, God gives us clear instructions as to our role in their lives:

Aging Well Through Exercise ging gets a really bad reputation these days. Aches, pains, loss of strength, and chronic disease seem to sneak up quickly and we soon begin to accept our inevitable destiny that age is to blame. What if I told you that you don’t have to “feel old” and hurt all the time? Just because something is common, doesn’t mean it is unavoidable. Studies over the past several decades continue to tell us that a lack in physical activity and poor nutrition are really strong

Today, let’s take a deeper look at how exercise can change the way you age. “Regular exercise is the only well-established fountain of youth,” writes New York Times personal health reporter Jane Brody. Current research shows physical inactivity alone has become a contributor to the shortening of life expectancy similar to that of tobacco smoking or obesity! Additionally, the frailty and decreased energy we associate with aging, such as difficulty getting up off the floor, climbing stairs, or carrying groceries are due to muscle loss, not age alone. The old saying is true when it comes to muscle: “Use it or lose it.” Exercise is meant to replace the activity and movement that our lifestyle no longer demands. Humankind used to labor for everything. Simply

acquiring food involved farming, hunting, or gathering. With the emergence of machines and computers, we no longer have to physically work hard for much of anything. Even if you did work a bit more physically when you were young, promotions, and eventually retirement causes most to find their activity dwindling significantly or stopping altogether! A study in 2011 by a team of German doctors found that integrating an intense strength training routine in the elderly (>60 years) increased muscle strength, coordination, and motor neuron speed in every individual who participated! They recommended that healthy people aged 60+ should strength train at least three times a week for the best results. This study also found that when older individuals started a safe and effective strength training program, there was little to no side effects or injury! The American College of Sports Medicine and the American Heart Association both emphasize that beginning an exercise program is the most important public health message to the American community. Properly planned and executed effort in an exercise routine will help you build strength, maintain bone density, improve balance and coordination, reduce your risk of falling, maintain independence in your everyday life, and much more! To gain these benefits, they recommend some type of moderate cardiovascular activity, like walking, should be incorporated at a minimum of 30 minutes, five days a week, or a more vigorous activity, like jogging, for 20 minutes, three days a week. A progressive strength training program of 8-10 exercises, done for 1 hard set each, two to three days a week is also highly recommended. eventy years ago, a new business was born in Dalton, Georgia. Bates Furniture Company, Inc. came to fruition in 1948 as the brainchild of brothers J.T. Bates and Roy Bates. The Bates brothers were not new to business; the furniture store was another way to diversify their efforts while providing an additional home furnishing retail choice for Dalton-area residents. J.T. Bates started with his grocery store in the 1930’s followed by the textile industry like many other Dalton entrepreneurs. Along with Roy Bates’ management talents, the two men came together to successfully bring to downtown Dalton a prominent furniture retail store that has survived into the 21st century known to this day as Bates Furniture Company, Inc. In 1953, while working at Cabin Craft Mills, Bates stockholder Evelyn Bates Henley, Roy’s daughter, met a young bookkeeper by the name of Odell Cochran. She was so impressed with his character and accounting skills that she recommended him to her uncle J.T. as a candidate for the bookkeeping position at Bates Furniture. At that time, the store was located on North Hamilton Street across from

After the passing of Roy Bates, his brother J.T. asked Odell to become the general manager of Bates Furniture Company. Several years passed during which time J.T. and Odell became very close. “J.T. became like a father to me,” recalls Odell. Nettie Bates, J.T.’s wife, not only saw Odell’s potential, but also invited him over to their home on Walnut Avenue to do odd jobs such as plumbing or electrical work. Odell and his new wife, Selva Ann Cox Cochran, became wellknown at the Bates’ family home. When J.T. Bates passed away in 1978, his stock in the furniture store transferred to his children and grandchildren. Some of the notable stockholders were Randy Bates, who still practices law in Dalton, Ethel Bates, wife of Roy Bates, Gibbs and Evelyn Bates Henley, Susan Bates, and Jimmie Bailey, mother to retired physician Bates Bailey, who served Dalton many years in the medical profession.

In 1986, Odell Cochran was approached by several of the stockholder’s who were interested in selling their investment. By 1988, Odell had complete ownership in Bates Furniture Company, Inc. In 1984, Odell’s oldest son Hubert joined the Bates management team after several years of teaching in Fort Pierce, FL, with his wife Janet. Also in 1984, Carole Cochran McNeese, Odell’s youngest daughter, began working at the store as office manager. As time flew by, one by one, Odell began involving more of his family in the business. Son-in-law, Dan Hocker (wife Crystal Cochran Hocker), joined the team in 1985. By 2004, the Cochran family had seen the arrival of many grandchildren, of which three grandsons eventually also signed on as employees: Daniel Hocker, Jr, Matthew McNeese and T. Gareth Hocker. Thereafter, Odell’s youngest son Harold L. Cochran came on board as well.

ow many of us get such satisfaction after finishing a jigsaw puzzle, spending hours, and possibly weeks working at it? Have you ever stopped to think about how our lives are like a puzzle and only our Father God can see the entire finished picture and knows where every single piece will go? We go through situations that are sometimes so painful to us and others and we just can't understand what's going on. But somewhere down the road of life you look back and see how that situation, or puzzle piece of your life, was used by God to teach you something and it all fit perfectly into His plan for you. "‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future’" (Jeremiah 29:11). If you can imagine in your mind's eye, that on the day you were born, God had a huge box of the puzzle pieces of your life and dumped them all out, where only He knew the way they would all fit together! As you got older and started being more independent He would possibly allow you to go your own way so you could learn from your own mistakes, but if that particular piece of the puzzle wasn't in His box to begin with, no matter what you try on your own, it's not going to fit! So God has to gain control of the situation, reel you back in, and put you back on track. Some of us have

experienced this for ourselves over and over and can't understand why we have so much go wrong in our lives, or why if our plan seemed so good in the beginning to us, things just aren't going the way we thought they would. Because possibly that wasn't God's plan for you and that particular piece of the puzzle of your life won't work for you! You attempted to use someone else's puzzle piece for yourself! Life doesn't happen that way! I know for myself, I can look back over some of the issues I have dealt with in my own life and at the time, didn't understand why I had to go through a particular situation or even why a certain person was in my life. God will use people for perhaps just a season in our lives to bring us back to Him and on the right path to where He wanted us to go in the first place. For some of us, like myself, we have had many lessons to learn from over the years and most of them were very painful. “Now this is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘Give careful thought to your ways’" (Haggai 1:5). As I'm getting in my later years of life, I'm seeing just a slight picture of what my finished puzzle should look like. I wish I hadn't put so many of the wrong pieces in during my younger years, but God has forgiven me, picked me up, and told me we would finish this puzzle together. And what a beautiful picture it will be when He has it completed.

When we argue only evidence from science, we use weaponry that pales in comparison to the armor God gives us to combat the evil in the world (Ephesians 6:7). With those two reasons mentioned, how should we evangelize to someone who has an evolutionary perspective on life and denies the existence of God? I believe we should show the superiority of the Gospel over their worldview. What is a worldview? A worldview is what it sounds like, the way someone views the world. Each worldview must answer at least four questions: 1) How did the universe and everything in it originate? 2) What is the meaning of life? 3) How do we measure right and wrong? 4) What happens to us after we die? The Gospel answers all these questions in a logically, lovingly, and redemptively:

evangelize to someone who does not believe the Christian worldview, we should logically, lovingly, and redemptively, show them the faults in their worldview while providing the superior worldview through the lens of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Arguing over evidence will rarely win a soul, but revealing the glory of the Gospel in a worldview comparison, changes how we see everything in life, causes people to look at life differently, and shows the superiority of submitting their life to Jesus. Isn't that our goal in evangelism?

Real God - Real Prayer o you believe in what you pray? Prayer can be power, God in action! Some prayers are answered right away and some are not. We aren't always privy to the results, so why pray? Well, that's where you must decide how important prayer is to you. James 5:16 says, “The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results.”

Are you the kind of friend that people can count on? If you tell someone you will pray for them, do you keep your word? I find that it is best to pray right then, before it slips out of my mind. For me, I can literally put my phone down and my mind is on the next thing I need to do. My intentions are always good, but my commitment not so much. So, I've learned to pray immediately. And many of us don't realize that with all the distractions we are faced with today, it’s honestly hard to focus. It's hard to get that inner reflection that you sometimes need to tackle and pray over the serious stuff. And that's because most of us are over stressed, over committed, and overly tired. It's so much more important today to disconnect! Get away from everything by finding a quiet place to hear your own thoughts. That's where you will be able to hear from

God! His quiet voice is always present, whispering to our souls. He is trying to connect with us in a way that can bring us peace in the midst of chaos. To let us know that he hears us, and that He is here for us no matter where we are or what we've done. Through prayer, I have experienced healing myself. When I was a kid of about 11 years old, I had 4 teeth cut out in preparation for braces. Back then you didn't take Tylenol; kids didn't even think to ask for something for pain. But I can remember lying in bed crying. The pain went from my jaw up into my head, and I couldn't do anything but lie in bed and cry. I remember thinking to myself, if God is real then he will heal me. I began to pray, “God please take this pain away.” Now it didn't happen right away, but I continued to say that one-line prayer over and over. And all of a sudden, the pain stopped. It surprised me so that I sat straight up in bed and looked around. I guess looking to see if an angel would be standing there, but there was nothing. I laid back down and said a prayer of thanks, and fell asleep. Just like that, I experienced the presence of a mighty God who can do all things for his people. This mighty God, who hears his people, is also a Holy God who deserves reverence! He is the creator of all things. He is the one true and living God! His power is immeasurable, and has no limits. He is bigger than your chaos, bigger than your problems, and bigger than any disease. We may not always understand why some are healed and some not, but He always has a plan in motion. As we are reminded, that Christ came to die that we might live, and our life here is not the end! Yet, we are called to His service for His purpose, and the way we find out where God is working is through prayer. Purposeful prayer!

Come in the Back Door ack in the 1980’s when our world was safer, I remember the screen back-door was always unlocked at the Cunningham residence in Rainbow City, Alabama. On many Wednesday evenings, I politely knocked on their screen door and I heard a voice: “Come on in! It’s open!” Their front door was closed and locked but I was always welcome to come in their back door. Whether we shared a bowl of popcorn or talked politics while watching TV, I was always welcomed by Jack and Jane Cunningham.

It’s paradoxical that we feel more loved when we enter a neighbor’s back door, but what if the God who loves us unconditionally does not come through the ideal front door of our lives regarding our expectations or circumstances? Are we then prone to question His love and back away? Sometimes we do quit knocking on heaven’s door or praying. Maybe you have told yourself: “It was not supposed to happen like this!” Chuck Swindoll writes from his classic Come Before Winter, “So much of what results in a fulfilled life is really the product of a contradiction. Funny isn’t it? God often delivers his best gifts to us through the back door of our lives.” If you are asking for examples of how

God came through the back door of people’s lives in the Scriptures, consider the following: 6 adults (children of Noah and his wife) left to populate the earth after the world flood; an 80-year old man who stuttered by the name of Moses who confronted Pharaoh in Egypt; a short-smelly Shepherd boy by the name of David chosen to be the next king; a teenage boy who dared to be a Daniel; a teenage girl by the name of Mary who birthed the Son of God; eleven unruly disciples each with their own warts and issues given the job of spreading the gospel to the ends of the earth after Jesus left; a man who was locked away and chained in a prison by the name of Paul who wrote life-changing Epistles. Need I continue? Author Ken Gire states from The Reflective Life, “Jesus comes to us, I’ve learned in the most unlikely of ways, which if we’re not looking, we’ll miss.” Think of our modern world and the folks who God used despite circumstances far from ideal. A teenage girl who dove off of a Virginia Beach pier in 1967, and became paralyzed from the neck down by the name of Joni Eareckson Tada. She learned to paint with her mouth who also writes books and speaks all over the world (including radio) defending the disabled. Check out her website: joniandfriends.org. Fear and Inadequacy

"Please don't ask me to pray out loud. My mind always goes blank." "Wow, I hope my friend is OK. I haven't heard back from her." "I need to exercise, but my terrible foot problems make it impossible." "My clothes are too tight, but give me all the sweets and bread." Blah, blah, blah. My entire life I've struggled constantly with negative thoughts and emotions. Sadly, even after I was saved in 1983, those feelings didn't vanish. Most of the time it seems automatic, like I was made that way. Just call me Lamenting Lara. But you know what? The burdens have worn me down to the point where I'm ready to change completely. Can I? Is it really possible? Past experience says yes. My ex-husband, who is one of those happy-go-lucky Christians unfazed by daily challenges, helped me overcome a good portion of these issues during our thirteen years of marriage, especially my focus on things out of my control. My dad and best friends are the same way, because they know God is on the throne. Ultimately I do, too, but in the years since my divorce those worries have slowly crept back in. This time I want them gone permanently. Enough already. My prayer in a nutshell is Jasmine Murray's song, "Fearless." It's the essence of 2 Timothy 1:7 set to music, "For God has not given us a spirit of fearfulness, but one of power, love, and sound judgment." As my dad asked me a while back, "You trust the Lord with your soul, right? Then why can't you trust him with your life?" Powerful stuff, Dad.

The Lord's already been working on me. Reminders keep popping up everywhere like spring daffodils on Twitter, at church and small group, off the pages of my Bible, and always at the right time. When weakness squirms in, I see the Psalm of David. “The Lord is my light and my salvation, whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life -- of whom shall I be afraid?" (Psalm 27:1). It's a monsoon outside and I have places

to go? John 14:1 comes to the rescue: "Let not your heart be troubled. Believe in God, believe also in Me." Afraid I won't measure up? Jesus says, "I have told you these things so that in Me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world!" (John 16:33). On my own I may be an epic fail, but God is love and "Love never fails" (I Corinthians 13:8). By His grace already bestowed on me, I can do this, and I will. You can, too. Jesus said so.
