Letter from the Editor

T

his year more than 10 million florists will send flowers to honor mothers and 150 million cards will be delivered to mothers in more than 46 countries around the world. Mother’s Day is something to which everyone can relate. Whether biological, adoptive, stepmother, or godmother, the influence of a mother reaches across regions, religions, castes, cultures, genders, and every financial status with a guiding force that molds and shapes the lives and personalities of her children. There could not be a more universal celebration. But long before Mother’s Day was designated on the calendar of any country, God signed a resolution that commanded us to honor our mothers. He wrote it with his finger on tablets of stone. We know it as the fifth of the Ten Commandments: “Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you” (Ex. 20:12 NIV). The following is taken from an anonymous poem that describes the things mothers teach their children just by being an excellent example: When you thought I wasn’t looking . . . I saw you hang my first painting on the refrigerator, and I wanted to paint another one. I saw you feed a stray cat, and I thought it was good to be kind to animals. I heard you say a prayer, and I believed there is a God I could always talk to. I saw tears in your eyes, and I learned that sometimes things hurt, but it’s all right to cry. When you thought I wasn’t looking, I looked . . . and wanted to say thanks for all the things I saw when you thought I wasn’t looking. A few years ago when I wrote the book, Gifts of Grace in Women of Faith, I made this dedication: “To the memory of my mother, Leona Gore, who was capable of sharing a bathroom with five daughters and still make it to church on time; who transformed small, mundane parsonages into homes we could call our own; whose creative sewing made homemade dresses look like designer fashions; who always put others’ needs before her own, thereby teaching me by example how to share God’s gift of grace with others.” It is a privilege to honor mothers not only on Mother’s Day, but every day of the year. What Your Pastor Wished You Knew about Funerals

S

These five questions may help ease undue stress in the grieving process. by Brian Branam

peaking from experience, I find many families in loss are at a total loss when it comes to funerals. As if losing a loved one were not hard enough, families may find themselves blindsided by a set of immediate and painful decisions for which they were not prepared. Perhaps I can offer some suggestions that may help ease undue stress in the grieving process. 1. You don’t choose a funeral home, you choose a funeral director. A funeral home is a building in which a funeral is held. A funeral director is a person who makes sure all of the details of a funeral are handled. A good funeral director can be as much of a minister to your family as your pastor in a critical time of need. The choice of “where” to have the funeral is actually a choice of “who” will have the funeral. Ask your pastor who he or she trusts to serve your family well 2. Funerals are simple personal services not long public productions. Funerals do not add to life, they honor life. In actuality, funerals are not for the deceased but for the family and friends left behind. Some families add undo stress to their grief by feeling they have to put a funeral together in much the same way as one would plan a wedding or some other type of formal ceremony. Funerals are not meant to be formal, but personal. All your pastor really needs from you are those special, personal touches. As your pastor prepares for the funeral, share a story that reflects your loved one’s heart and personality, perhaps a favorite Scripture, or a song that is meaningful to the family. 3. Balance the emotional need with the emotional toll. The time of visitation and the funeral service

6 // May 2017

itself are critical steps that help bring closure, solidify memories, and draw support from others. Yet in seeking to accommodate for others, the question becomes who can come and when? That desire to accommodate turns into a few days of waiting, a day of visitation with a funeral and a graveside service to follow. This protracted time can take an emotional toll rather than fill an emotional need. In making scheduling decisions for a few, families pass an emotional tipping point. Bring it to balance. Make a decision that is best for your family and not for a few. Let people come to you. 4. An irreplaceable support to your immediate family is a church family. I hear people say all the time, “I don’t know what I would have done without my church family.” If you do not have a church home, find one. Connect, serve, and learn to love them. You are going to need them. We all suffer sorrow and loss. As a pastor, there is nothing sadder for me than to see a family who suffers alone. Don’t go alone, get in church. 5. Do you know the Lord? First and foremost, your pastor wants to know that you know the Lord. No matter how eloquent your funeral sermon may be, your pastor cannot preach you into heaven. It is only through repentance and faith in Jesus Christ that we have assurance of eternal life. The greatest hope we have in any time of loss is that you are not lost forever. If you do not know the Lord, be saved today!

A Special Gift for Mom

N

by Danielle Jennings

othing says Mother’s Day like a sentimental, handmade gift. From handprints in clay to handcrafted cards,

Mother’s Day is not complete without those gifts that are made with love. It is also not complete without flowers. Any type of flower, as long as it is given with love, is never a bad flower! So why not create flowers out of handprints? What a special way to deliver those flowers to Mom!

What you’ll need: • White sheet of paper

• Green paint for the stems • 4 other colors of paint • 1 color for the ribbon

• 3 colors that you want your flowers to be (Mom’s favorite colors would look nice!) • Paintbrushes

• Sponge to apply paint to hands!

How to:

• Apply the first color of paint to one of your hands • Press hand down firmly on piece of paper

• Apply second color of paint to the other hand

• Press down firmly overlapping the thumb on the first hand • Next, paint the stems with green paint from the palms to the bottom edge of the paper • Allow those hands and stems to dry for a few minutes • Apply the third color of paint to one of your hands, and overlap the other two handprints in the middle. • Your fingers should be right about where the thumbs are • Press hand firmly down on the paper

• Paint a green stem from that palm downward to the edge of the page. • Using your 4th color, paint a ribbon around the stems where they come together. • Let dry and present to Mom on Mother’s Day!

named Ananias. The Lord called him in a vision and told him to go to the house of Judas on Straight Street and seek out a man called Saul of Tarsus who was blind. He was instructed further to lay his hands on him that he might receive his sight. Ananias naturally was afraid, but the Lord said, “Go” in verse 15, and he did as the Lord commanded.

1. Each of us needs other Christians at times to help us through a difficult situation. 2. A visitor is more at ease if he or she is accompanied by a friend or a small group. 3. An excellent tool for church growth is the development of small groups or “communities.”

The Scales fell from Saul’s eyes and he got up and was baptized. He took some food and regained his strength. In verses 19(b)-20 we read: “Saul spent several days with the disciples in Damascus. At once he began to preach in the synagogues that Jesus is the Son of God” (NIV).

Ringtone Misery Turns to Morning Glory

I

Casting my fears and concerns on the One who cares for the sparrow−and me! by Sheila Bird

’ve never been a morning person so when my cell phone alarm went off, I wanted to hide it under the mattress and go back to sleep. It didn’t matter what I was going through, how I felt, or how much sleep I had the night before; I could always count on that relentless little ringtone to force me out of my cocoon of blankets and into the light of day. This particular day I was so overwhelmed by the cares of life that I would have postponed the sunrise if that were possible. Reluctantly I dragged myself out of bed, muttered a half-hearted prayer, and got ready for work. The things I had left undone the day before and those that lay ahead of me were all I could focus on. My husband drove me to work that day. He is one of those awful morning people. Before he has even had breakfast, he is chattering away about everything under the sun. I, on the other hand, don’t speak until it becomes absolutely necessary. Since I didn’t take the time to dwell on the Lord, who so graciously gave me another day to live; I began to cast my cares on my husband. I figured he could handle my insecurities. So I said to him, “I don’t know why in the world the Bible tells us not to worry about tomorrow. I am not sure it’s even humanly possible.” He calmly agreed with me that it is difficult to hand our cares over to the Lord. He assured me that God knows what is best for us even when we don’t.

14 // May 2017

He said that no matter how we interpret the scripture about tomorrow, that life will go on. So I agreed with him that everything would be alright, even though I still questioned how. As we arrived in the parking lot where I worked, everything was still dripping wet from a brief summer rain. Sunrays were piercing a light fog that was slowly lifting from the ground. I opened the car door and heard a little bird singing. It was loud and strong, happy and carefree. The little bird seemed completely unshaken by the wind and the rain that had passed through just hours before sunrise. In my typical morning disposition I said, “Listen to that bird. What’s he got to sing about anyway?” And in my husband’s atypical, lighthearted way he answered, “Maybe his bills are paid and he has no thought for tomorrow.” As I walked down the sidewalk, conviction fluttered in my heart like the wings of that little bird. His song became impossible to ignore. It caused me to turn my eyes and ears toward heaven. As I did, my aches and pains, worries and cares lost their grip on me. I decided to join the little bird in song. I think it went like this: “I sing because I’m happy, I sing because I’m free, for His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.” Sheila Bird writes from her home in Cleveland, TN. She is a published author and is passionately pursuing the ministry of encouragement through free-lance writing.

ave you set your goals for the new year? Goals of any type need to be challenging without being overwhelming. If you need help crafting

a few healthy goals for the new year, the health and fitness experts at Bradley Wellness Center can help.

Drink More Water

Our bodies consist of 60 percent water. Among

other functions, water • Regulates your body temperature • Cushions your joints • Keeps your mouth, eyes, and nose moist • Helps your body process nutrients • Flushes out waste products • Helps to improve your energy level. Experts recommend that most of us should drink six to eight eight-ounce glasses of water each day.

Remember to Rest

Most of us don’t need to be reminded to rest!

However, it can sometimes be tempting to continue exercising even though our bodies are exhausted. If you haven’t exercised in a while, you should consider alternating your active days with rest days. As you build your stamina, you may choose to have just one rest day per week.

Focus on Form

Learning to use the correct form while exercising

can help you to steer clear of future injuries. Bradley Wellness Center employs six certified personal trainers and three fitness consultants. They want you to achieve your goals and will help you with any questions you may have. All members of Bradley Wellness Center are offered a complimentary personal training assessment.

Eat Healthy

According to the American Heart Association, a

healthy diet consists of five servings of vegetables, four servings of fruits, six servings of grains, three servings of dairy, and two servings of protein each day. Bradley Wellness Center has a registered dietitian on staff to help you learn more about how eating a proper diet can help you meet your health goals. All members are offered a complimentary nutrition consultation. Just ask the associate at the front desk for an appointment.

Try New Things

If you’re new to exercising, everything is

new! However, if you exercise on a regular basis, it can be easy to become bored with your routine. Here’s a challenge: try one new activity each month. This is a great way to introduce variety into your routine and reduce the chances of exercise burnout. An easy way to build variety into your schedule is to try fitness classes.

the things we had to overcome at the beginning of our journey. Overall, we always ask God for wisdom and guidance for this project. The process has not been an easy one. There have been ups and downs, but we never lost our faith. It took time and lots of patience, but with God’s help, we now have over sixteen years in business. With time, La Esperanza Bakery has been growing and we have faith that it will keep growing. Each day we are surprised how our clients support us in buying bread, and with the support of our faithful clients, we have now been blessed to be able to add on to the building. organizations and their activities. God has blessed us, and we have learned not to retain that blessing but to share it. He will never stay with nothing. La Esperanza Bakery has been supporting kid’s and teen’s sport teams as well as Dalton State College students for their rallies and events. Our Traditions

We really want to keep our tradition in the

bakery for our customers and our children to learn and realize they are the future in the bakery. In the bakery, we try to maintain traditions like the Three King’s Day in January, Semana Santa in April, Valentine’s Day, Children’s Day, which in the Hispanic society is celebrated on April 30, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, and Fourth of July. We also try to do a few giveaways of school supplies for back-toschool children, and Day of the Dead in November, Christmas in December, and other events that fall in between. We

28 // May 2017

The Lost and Found

A story about what can happen when a teen becomes a light to the lost.

B

by Jacob Herald

eing a teenager in a world like ours is rough. The constant peer pressure placed on you can reach into your very being and break you. It can cause you to back out of what you’re doing, especially when you know it’s right. Peer pressure can come between you and God and prevent you from accomplishing His work. However, in this dark world there is a shining beacon of hope—a dwelling of peace from the harsh storms, and a harbinger of love. His name is Jesus. Unfortunately, in this world there are people who lie just outside the light. These people walk around as hollow shells of who they can be. They feel worthless, forgotten, broken, and destroyed. They see the light of Christ and wish they could come into its warmth; yet they remain in the cold shadows of the world. They are lost. My own friend was one of those individuals. His own mind twisted his view, causing him to walk alone spiritually when he needed help the most. He was a hollow shell traveling the world just outside of the light. He had everything he needed for a spiritual fire, yet he lacked the spark. He was lost. I was that spark. I would see my friend walking through this world alone and lost, his soul wanting a

connection with his Savior. He needed help, so that is when I took a risk and invited him to church. That one decision to shine a light changed his entire life. I acted as a guide, leading my friend toward the brilliant beacon of Christ. He knelt down at the altar not knowing how to pray. The pastor explained to him that through Christ, forgiveness is available to all. He told him that all have fallen short of the grace of God, yet through Christ all wounds can be healed. It was as simple as asking for Jesus to forgive your sins and accepting him into your heart. In that amazing moment, my friend found Christ. Love and happiness filled his once hollow heart and spilled out into his life, healing his once fragmented mind. He was found. That is why we must shine our lights out into the darkness of the world. We must be sparks to those who need it most. We must be bold for Christ, stepping out to shine our lights to reveal those who are lost. This simple act could lead your lost friend, lost relative, or even a lost stranger to be found. Jacob Herald is a fifteen-year-old Christian teen constantly seeking to grow in the Lord. Lemons to Lemonade

I

Respecting the right of your spouse to disagree and open your heart to accept another point of view could have a respectful conflict resolution. by Carl Corser

've heard so many times from older couples who say they have never had a feud. Is that really true? Maybe they have sugar-coated reality. Disagreements? Not me and my wife; we don't have them. We just have highly expressive exchanges of words. All couples will sooner or later have conflict. How they approach the resolution is what makes a marriage relationship successful or end up in the divorce courts. Life itself applies enough pressure to our marriages, so heaven forbid that we complicate things with unwise handling of the lemons life serves. Yes, lemonade is so refreshing as we relax in a lawn chair under a big shade tree on a beautiful spring afternoon. How refreshing it can be when we can have peaceful and respectful conflict resolution in our marriages by turning lemons to lemonade. Resolution is so sweet after a bitter conflict.

32 // May 2017

Please, please, please, start off on the right foot. Respect the right of your spouse to disagree. Express your real concerns and not petty little unrealistic feelings. Find ways to share common goals and interests that unite you as a couple instead of causing division. Open your heart to accept your spouse’s point of view. Who knows it might shock your resolving activity. Listen carefully to your spouse’s concerns and proposals to resolve your conflict. Understand the priority or key issues involved in the conflict. Rabbit chasing should not be allowed in the resolving of a marriage conflict. Think about the possible consequences that would result if the conflict is never resolved. Imagine possible alternative solutions to the present conflict. Think outside of the conflict “box.” Always be willing to offer reasonable compromises that will really make the lemonade so, so sweet and refreshing. When we are being reasonable with each other, conflict-resolving results will be lasting. Negotiate fair and balanced agreements together that will be acceptable to both individuals involved. These agreements then can be realistically kept, therefore taking the old sour lemons in your marriage and making sweet lemonade that refreshes your marriage relationship. Oh, how sweet it is to see a couple’s marriage relationship refreshed.

Will You Trust Me?

I

The question before us today is the same one Moses faced. In the midst of all these circumstances and situations, will we trust God at His word? by Dr. Greg Collins

n the third and the fourth chapters of the Book of Exodus, we find the story of Moses and the burning bush. There have been tens of thousands of sermons, if not more, preached from these passages of scriptures. But the thought that comes to me is the overall test this encounter brought to the life of Moses. The questions that appears from this encounter and test from the Lord God is, “Will you trust me?” God sets forth a mission for Moses’ life. But Moses makes a variety of excuses as to why he should not be the one to accomplish this mission for God. There are several factors Moses understands that gives him pause as to do what God is instructing him to do. He understands the strength and varicosity of the people he is to confront. For him, it is a question of strength and safety. God answers his doubt by showing the staff turned to a serpent and this hand becoming leprous. He knows his own insecurities and doubts of himself. He questions God on his ability to speak, so the Lord gives him Aaron as a helper. Lastly, Moses knows the hardness and stiffneckness of the people he was to deliver. Moses says the people will ask, “What is the Lord’s name?” So God instructs Moses to say I AM has sent him. The sum of this conversation between God and Moses boils down to the question, “Will you trust me?” says the Lord. This test is no different than the test you and I face every day. We know who we are and our own

36 // May 2017

shortcomings. We know the difficulties of the variety of trials and tribulations we face. Whether it is financial crisis, health crisis, or even family crisis, we know the strength and difficulties of those things we face. As born-again believers in Jesus Christ, we must learn to trust Jesus Christ more and more each day. Apostle Paul speaking to the church at Rome said, “For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Rom. 8:38-39 NKJV). Paul knew that trusting God was the key and that God’s promise to never forsake us stands above all the things we can possibly face. Today, be encouraged. No matter what you are facing. God is for you and with you in Christ Jesus; just trust in him. “For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day (2 Tim. 1:12 KJV). Dr. Greg Collins has served over 20 years in ministry. A graduate of Andersonville Seminary, Dr. Collins’ ministry has impacted thousands of people around the country and world through TV, print and internet outreaches. He also preaches and teaches in many venues and crusades around the world. Most Sundays he can be found in the Pulpit of Faith Worship Center in Chatsworth, Georgia.

From Failure to Success

W

Recalling examples from Scripture that the miraculous hand of God delivered them to a victorious conclusion. By Yecid Carrillo

e are in a journey in which we encounter changes, challenges, and even defeat. Living in a constantly changing world and environment, many times it seems so easy to give up on our faith, our principles, our dreams, and even on the divine plans God has for us. When we look at the Holy Scriptures, we find a number of occasions where a person, a group, or a nation faced failure. Some had literally given up, overwhelmed by defeat, but in the same moment where there was no hope, their faith was activated and the miraculous hand of God showed up just in time to deliver them and bring them out to victory and success. Here are a few scenarios from the Scriptures. Moses went from being a prince to becoming a fugitive in an instant. Forty years later when he was used to a completely different environment, he met with God himself in the desert. From a simple, forgotten shepherd, he became a successful leader of a nation. Joshua, Moses' most faithful helper, became so attached to Moses, the man of God. When

38 // May 2017

Moses was taken from him, little did Joshua know that his greatest victories and successes were getting ready to begin. God spoke to Joshua directly, telling him that in the same way He was with Moses, He would be with him. God told him "Only be strong and very courageous" (Josh. 1:7 NKJV), but these two initiatives needed another very important ingredient, the Word of God. In the same chapter, verse 8, God asked Joshua, "Keep this Book of the Law always in your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful" (NIV). I can't help but think about the three Israelite young men who refused to bow down to worship the statue built by the Babylonians when the people of Israel were taken into captivity. Hananiah, Michael, and Azariah (Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego) knew that the

consequences of their action could have cost them their lives. They acted in faith, based on what they believed. They were willing to be burned alive in a fiery furnace, not knowing that right in that moment, the King of kings and Lord of lords was already stepping into the blazing furnace to wait for them, to protect them, deliver them, and use them to make His name known among the nations. Dear friend, no matter how difficult your circumstances seem to be, the same God of the Bible is still available for you today. I have experienced His mighty hand delivering me and many others time after time. Allow Him to change your failures for success.

Yecid "Jesse" Carrillo. Born in 1979 in a Christian home in Colombia, South America, I committed to serving God at the age of 17, and immediately started preaching on the streets, parks, hospitals, public transportation, and everywhere there was an opportunity. I have served as a pastor of a Spanish- speaking congregation for seven years along with my precious wife, Evelyn. We both know that our calling is to preach to the lost, and now I serve as a preacher to minister in different evangelistic revivals where we have seen the mighty hand of God helping those in need of His touch.

Constant Yet Changing Passing the baton to new fountains and areas of life helps to step into the unknown but constant nature of God.

T

by Mead Vest

he world seems to be in a constant state of flux. The older I get the faster time seems to go by. In this state of change that seems to be swirling all around, having a steady routine seems to be a high priority to create a peaceful life. I like order, structure, and having a plan. I can be flexible but I like flexibility with parameters. However, God doesn’t always work within expectations. You can’t always look at the past and forecast the future based on circumstances. In the past year or so I was faced with several big decisions, one of which was to move out of a position in which I had been serving for seven years. This position was actually an extension of something I had been actively engaged in for about twenty years in a different manner. I felt like moving out of this position would be saying goodbye to a part of my life that had held my heart for two decades. I would loose the connections and the mentoring opportunities I so valued. It was a difficult decision, since I knew that passing the baton to someone else meant a shift in much of what was familiar. My logical nature and my pros and cons list told me that it didn’t make sense to give up that area of service; however, I had an overwhelming feeling that it was time. I made the decision, which opposed all logic. I can’t say I had peace about it, but I knew I couldn’t ignore the overwhelming feeling to pass the baton. A year later I was faced with several more big decisions. This time one of the decisions was related to

40 // May 2017

another area of my life in which I have been engaged in service for more than a decade. On my logical list, the pros of leaving outweighed the cons and demanded me to make an exit; yet, my inner soul knew I had to stay. I needed to continue working where I was, even though I knew that I was saying yes to an unknown. Things were changing and I didn’t have a clear outlook of what my future held and yet I was compelled to stay put. It didn’t make sense and it certainly wasn’t the same answer I had received about a year prior. In fact, it was the exact opposite. One time my logical side told me to stay when I was compelled to go. The second time it made no practical or logical sense for me to continue on in that area of service, but I had to continue anyway. While God remained constant, He was constantly changing— changing my circumstances; changing my perspective; changing the way I responded. I chose to rely less on the stability of what I was accustomed to and instead step out into the unknown. My decisions defied logic, and to the casual observer may have appeared irrational, but the continual change in my life was based on the constant nature of God. osotros frecuentemente oir la historia de la mujer en la biblia con la tema de la sangre predicar en santuarios y ensenado en la clase de domingo.

Tony Garcia has been marred for five years to his wonderful wife Dolores. The goal of foster care is to strengthen the children to go back to their biological families. by Jennifer Govea

n Northwest Georgia, there is a crisis for people to care for other people’s children on a short- and longterm basis. I am referring to “foster care.” Whitfield County alone has approximately 250 children in care and only thirty-two foster homes. When you do the math, you may think that each foster family has seven to eight foster kids, but that is not true! I know families with one child, another with six, another with two, and so on. Some think the Division of Family and Children Services (DFCS) is the bad guy wanting to rip kids out of their homes and take them away from everything they know and love. Nothing could be further from the truth! When a family situation gets so bad that the child is put in danger, DFCS gets involved to protect children who cannot protect themselves. Reasons for removing a child from a potentially dangerous situation could be physical, sexual, verbal abuse, or neglect due to drug and alcohol addictions, or mental health disorders. DFCS always looks for suitable family members to care for the children, but if none are appropriate, that’s when the state calls foster families to step in and help. The goal of foster care is for families to be strengthened and children to go back to their biological families because they want to keep families together. In the meantime, caring foster families take children into their homes to provide a safe and loving environment while the biological parents get on the right path, and, hopefully, able to get their children back. While in foster care, children often receive attention and nurturing they haven’t been used to including other

48 // May 2017

important details such as haircuts, dental/emotional/ healthcare visits, clothes, and structured parenting they need. Taking foster children to a movie, out to eat, and on vacation are luxuries that make them feel special and a part of the foster family. Foster parents need a break sometimes and that’s where you come in! You can provide short-term respite or volunteer care for these families! Some examples of that would be babysitting for a few hours either at a foster family's home or your house for a date night, having one or two foster kids stay at your house over the weekend so the couple can attend a marriage retreat, or keeping a foster child overnight while the rest of the family goes to an outof-town funeral. The training and home requirements for providing this type of short-term care are much less than what foster parents go through and are greatly appreciated by foster families. If you are thinking that you wouldn’t qualify to help because you are single, don’t have children, are retired, or live in an apartment, none of that matters! You just need a big heart to help others and trust God to do the rest. For more information about how you can provide a break to foster parents, please contact Melanie Garlin, Resource Development at the Whitfield County DFCS office at (706) 272-2805. We also have a need for teen homes and large sibling groups if you feel called in this area also. Jennifer Govea is a bilingual editor and former missionary in Latin America. She and her husband currently work at Rock Bridge Community Church and have a son.
