The Shovel of Grace

o, I hate yardwork. Hate it. I consider grass cutting

hopeless cause and waste of time. I call it being people of the

There is a short and powerful parable in Luke 13 that reminds me of my feelings about yardwork. From it there is a huge lesson for us. There is a tree that has been fruitless for quite a while and the man who owns it gets fed up with it and tells the vineyard worker to cut it down. He says, “I’ve waited three years still no fruit! Cut it down! Why should it even waste the soil?” He obviously feels like me when it comes to yardwork. But then the vineyard worker gives an unexpected says, “Sir, leave it this year also, until I dig around it and fertilize it. Perhaps it will bear fruit next year, but if not, you can cut it down.” Pay attention to what he is saying. He is saying, “Even though we’ve seen no results yet, I am willing to get down in the dirt with manure and keep trying. I will get dirty and smelly, but I’m going to keep digging. I am willing to take more time and not just chop it down. I believe fruit is still possible.” What a hopeful perspective! Here is an important thing for us to consider. As we invest in people, it is often far too easy to be like the man who wants to chop down the fruitless tree. We will have people in our lives who seem fruitless and as the man in the story says, “a waste of soil.” They seem fruitless, so we quit on them. The “tree” is not doing what I want, when I want, or the way I want. So we pick up the proverbial chainsaw and cut it down. We determine, whether we realize it or not, that they are a

up the shovel, you need to know that it takes work. It will be hard. It will be slow. It will be humbling. It’s tiring. No glamour. But, we dig with hope, faith and love. Think about it like this: • The chainsaw of judgement takes life. • The shovel of grace gives life. • The chainsaw of judgement is a selfish act of pride. • The shovel of grace is a selfless act of love. • The chainsaw of judgement says “God can do no more!” • The shovel of grace believes “You can bear much fruit.” Maybe as you have read this you have thought of someone who needs the shovel of grace in their life. Maybe you are being called to pick it up and dig awhile. Perhaps you will see fruit. About The Author

o you have a friend who can draw really well? Or maybe one who makes straight A’s on their report card? How about that friend who is always picked first in gym class because they are so naturally athletic? Maybe you’ve wished that you could do something as well as your friend. But did you know that there is something that your friends wish they could do as well as you? Maybe it’s singing. Maybe you are funny! Maybe you are naturally helpful or you get along with people much younger or older than you. Or maybe you are a computer whiz and adults ask you to help out with technical difficulties. There is something that you excel at! If you’re not really sure what it is, ask someone who knows you well! They can tell you several things that you do really well or that just seem to come naturally to you! And that’s because it is natural to you. When GOD created you, He made you for a purpose! Ephesians 2:10 says, “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” You can be sure that God gave you that ability or talent that makes you special and unique. But did you know that God put those gifts in you before you were even born?! Psalms 139:13-16 says,

“For You formed my inward parts; You covered me in my mother’s womb. I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are Your works,

And that my soul knows very well. My frame was not hidden from You, When I was made in secret, And skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed. And in Your book they all were written, The days fashioned for me, When as yet there were none of them.” You don’t need to feel bad or be jealous because someone can do something better than you, because you were given your unique gifts to fulfill God’s exact purpose for you! Jeremiah 29:11 says, “‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the LORD, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future’.” There may be things you would like to learn or improve on in life, and that’s great! But those things that do come easily to you and you know you are pretty good at are gifts from God Himself to you, to be used for His glory. Remember that the next time you wish you could be more like somebody else or you wonder why you aren’t good at something. Ask God today to help you see the unique gifts He gave you and to use them to be all that He created, fashioned, and planned for you to be!

ven though somewhere inside us we know that tragedy will befall everyone at some point and time, we rarely ever think that it will happen to us. Scriptures say that it rains on the just and the unjust, and that good and evil happen to all people. What happens when tragedy does come to the man who follows God? How does that man respond and what does he say to God? We read the story of Job and see all the tragedy of life that befalls him, loss of family, home, and wealth. Surely short of life itself, he is a man that has lost it all. Job surely did fall into a deep depression. He had a wrong viewpoint when it came to how he perceived God through the lens of his circumstance. How is it, that a man can overcome such dire circumstances? In 2014, I was faced with my Job moment. I woke one morning in February to find that my wife of 26 years had passed away in the middle of the night. In a moment, a whirlwind, everything I knew from the time of being a young man was now completely turned upside down. Logical thought processes were far from my mind and after a few days of the initial shock my anger and frustration with God began to come to the surface. Questions, doubts, and fears were now the only thoughts that seemed to fill my mind. I believe that all things fall under the normal realms of grief but how would I return to a normal life and how could I trust again the God who I had served faithfully for over 20 years and felt like he had betrayed me?

I believe that while sitting on the dunghill, scraping his sores, these very same things came across the mind of Job. As a man, how do we overcome tragedy? How do we learn to breathe again? I found, for me, the answer was not something to be found, but that the answer was there, long before the need. Discipline! For many years it was my daily discipline to get up early in the morning for prayer and bible reading time. I had done it so long that it had become a second nature to me. I didn’t have to plan or think about it, I just woke up without an alarm and did it. Even though I told God I was done, with him and everything associated with him, I would still get up and read the Holy Word. By the time I would figure out I was doing it I would have already been at it for 30 to 45 minutes. During that time of daily discipline, God began a great work, a work of healing my broken heart, a work of softening my hardened heart and the rebuilding our relationship from the inside out. See, it was the reflection of the relationship through the reading of the word and the presence of the Lord that healing was able to be known. With Job, it was a reflection upon who he knew God was, and then the presence of the Lord that his healing took place. In his word, we find the beauty for ashes. Through his presence, our mourning is turned to joy! About The Author

Have You Stopped Reading Your Bible?

stopped reading my Bible. But don’t judge me yet. I regularly participate in or lead a women’s Bible study group at my church. I have a daily devotion book that I love for those days when my time is limited. The Facebook and Instagram accounts I follow have numerous posts daily with scripture, devotions, and encouraging posts. So, what is my problem? I realized that the time I was spending in God’s word had been analyzed and summarized by other people. Don’t

get me wrong; I absolutely love a good Bible study that teaches me things about the scripture that I wouldn’t see myself. I love the daily homework that encourages me to study deeper and longer than I would on my own. I love the fellowship that comes with group Bible study. But it is not a substitute for one-on-one time spent in His word. We live in a world where we have endless Bible study options. When was the last time you went in a Christian bookstore and wandered down the Bible study aisles? The options are endless! There are books for any subject you can imagine.

I recently took a trip and packed my Bible but left my Bible study book and devotional at home. My first thought was, “What am I going to read this week?” Mind you, I had my Bible with me! That’s when I realized how dependent I had become on all of these other (worthy) sources. What I discovered that week was how much I had been missing by not spending time in God’s word with Him. There were no commentaries or conclusions on the scripture passages, just God’s holy word. I had stopped trusting my own intuition when reading the Bible. Psalms 119:18 says, “Open my eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of your law.” Somewhere along the way, I had started listening to voices other than God’s. The voices I listen to are good, strong, and faithful, but I need to make sure that I don’t miss out on God’s voice to me. One of the best ways to discern the voice of God is through the reading of scripture. It is a powerful thing to sit down with a book, chapter or even just a verse and meditate on it. Our ever-present helper, the Holy Spirit, is always near to help us discern God’s words. Paul tells us in 2 Timothy 3:16-17, “All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.” So yes, I’m still attending my weekly Bible studies and loving every minute of it, but I’m finding the time to read my Bible again, just God, His word, and me. Chicken and Mozzarella Penne Pasta recook your pasta and reserve about half a cup of the pasta water for later. In a large pan with 2 tbsp oil, sauté the minced garlic for about a minute and be careful not to burn it. Sprinkle the chicken tenders with salt and paprika and add them to the pan. Cook for about 1-2 min per side. Dice the sun-dried tomatoes and add them to the chicken. Pour in the half and half and add in the mozzarella cheese and bring the mixture to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer till a creamy sauce forms. Add cooked pasta to the sauce and season with basil, salt, and crushed red pepper flakes. The sauce may seem a little too thick since adding in the pasta so this is where the pasta water comes in. Stir it in little by little and not all at once. It may not require using it all. Stir it in until it reaches the desired creaminess and then it’s ready to serve. This is an easy and hearty pasta dish that pairs wonderfully with a side salad and garlic bread.

Teaching Values to Children

s a parent what kind of values do you want to teach your child? Perhaps your list would include respect, kindness, honesty, courage, perseverance, self-discipline, compassion, generosity, and dependability. These values would definitely help children be protected from negative influences and lead them to become a loving and caring person. However, teaching values are often easier said than done. The number one thing that is necessary to teach these values is time: the one thing that most parents feel is lacking in their lives. So what do you do as a parent? You need to make time to be with your children and make that time you have with them really count.

The following are a few ways to encourage this conversation about values: Model good values — One of the most important things you can do is set a good example for your children. They learn from how you treat them, hearing how you interact with others and just general observations of how you handle different situations in your daily routine. If there’s a discrepancy between what you say and what you do, your children are not going to believe you. But if your actions are consistent with your words, then your message is going to be reinforced. Apologize to your children when you make mistakes — Everyone makes mistakes. If you overreact or say something inappropriate to your child, it is important for you to apologize for it. This will help them understand that you value and respect their thoughts, feelings and perspective. You will also model an important way to show respect to others, and how to accept responsibility for your mistakes.

Use every day experiences as a springboard for conversation — There are opportunities in daily events for you to teach your child values. These incidents could serve as conversation starters for you and your child. If you have heard about someone’s heroic deed, ask your child what they would have done in that situation. Ask open ended questions that will get them to thinking about values. Read the Bible with your children — Plan some Bible activities with your children. Help your children see that what you’re teaching them about right and wrong is not simply your own ideas, but comes from God’s Word. You may choose to read about people in the Bible who will give some wonderful lessons on the values you are teaching. The following are a few Biblical examples you might share: Joseph in Genesis 37-50 shows honesty, courage, kindness, and unselfishness. Ruth in the book of Ruth depicts loyalty, dependability, generosity and kindness There are four friends who help in Matthew and they are the image of love, dependability, and faith. There is a Philippian jailer in Acts 16:16-34 who has self-control, dependability, and loves justice. Talk with your children about specific values in the scriptures and how those people showed those values. Talk about situations today to which those same values could be applied and let your child give your examples in their own lives. Teaching values to your child is one of your most important jobs as a parent and it is never too early to start!

s I pray through topics to write about each month, God seems to always remind me of people He has placed on my path in my life who have had an impact on me in some way. This list of people would not be complete without Ruth and Mano. I first met these ladies on my ‘Meal on Wheels’ route when my son, Jacob, and I delivered hot meals to them each Thursday morning. Ruth and Mano were sisters by marriage as they had married brothers. Both husbands had long since passed away and these widows were left with each other. Ruth was legally blind and Mano was nearly deaf. Together, they were a perfect pair. I could sit and listen to them for hours on end tell their stories and share the wisdom they had learned through their combined 198 years on this earth. Ruth and Mano, nearing the end of their time on earth had said goodbye to nearly everyone they had loved in their lifetime. I cannot imagine how hard it must have been to experience that many goodbyes. The thing that struck me most about these ladies was that with all of the loss they had experienced, neither one of them were afraid of death nor were they afraid of what would become of them in their remaining years on earth. Being in their presence, I could tangibly feel that “peace of God that surpasses human understanding” which Paul refers to in his letter to the people of Philippi. Ruth and Mano knew the secret to life. No matter how old we are and how insignificant we might seem in the eyes of the world, the Creator never leaves or forsakes us. God values all life to the point that He gave us very specific instructions as to how to care for the elderly. As Christians, our responsibility to the elderly

is not merely human decency. Caring for them is a Biblical mandate. Ruth and Mano knew this. As they looked at the “birds of the air and the lilies in the fields”, they knew their Heavenly Father would make provisions for them and He would send people to care for them. Ruth and Mano have since gone home to be with the Lord. The sum total of people of who were left in this world that they still knew was very few. Living 8 hours away from them, I often worry how I will care for them as they age. Will they get hot meals on cold days? Who will visit them in my absence? When these thoughts plague me, God always reminds me of Ruth and Mano and that my parents too are among His children and He will never leave nor forsake them. Training Guidelines for the Over 50 Lifter

being recommended for everyone from young athletes to grandmas. It was once thought that older people should not exert themselves too much because they could strain their heart or hurt themselves, but study after study has shown that weight lifting is good for cardiovascular health,

Limit Your Range of Motion When performing a leg press or chest press, or any pushing exercise, stop about 10-15 degrees before your limb is fully straightened, come to a full stop and smoothly reverse direction. Similarly, when lowering the weight in any exercise, do not overstretch by allowing the weight to push or pull you into a vulnerable joint position. The ends of a muscle are the weakest and most vulnerable to injury. Stop a good 10-15 degrees from the fully straightened or stretched position to protect your joints.

3. Don’t Heave, Jerk, or Yank Weights Your mantra should be “smooth and controlled.” It is the turnaround where you stop lowering a weight and then lift up again where most injury occurs. Jerking, yanking, or bouncing to try and get one more repetition and “cheat” the rep up are dangerous moves. If you value your joints, abandon them.

4. Work Hard but not Too Hard Weight training is a high-intensity activity and as such reducing diabetes risk, improving arthritis symptoms, building back muscle, and more. Nevertheless, if done improperly, exercising with weights can cause muscle strains, joint and tendon dysfunctions, or other injury. So how can we gain all the benefit, while minimizing, or hopefully, eliminating, the risk? Glad you asked! Here’s what we’ve learned over the years:

1. Steer Clear of Most Barbell Exercises I can promise you that weight machines, dumbbells, and cables can provide virtually all of the benefit of barbells without the risks. They are biomechanically friendlier and dumbbells and cables in particular allow you to find a range of motion and movement pattern that suits your particular frame to a tee. In general, if you prize

you can reap all the benefits by training hard just three days a week. In fact, I’ll go further and say I’ve seen no benefit to training hard with one specific move more often than once a week! You can still train other moves, or the same move with less intensity, but the risk to benefit is not there for more frequent hard training. You should have a sensible plan that matches hard efforts with sufficient recovery and even a week off every now and then to allow the body to rest and heal. Weightlifting can be one of the safest, most efficient and productive forms of exercise any individual over 50 has ever experienced. By taking the above guidelines into careful consideration and adopting them, you can enjoy many safe years of training and a more abundant healthy life.

When was the last time that you took your spouse’s hand and you guys prayed together? Prayed for protection over your home, your children, your jobs, and if it has been a while, I would start today because your marriage needs covering! I know every morning before my husband goes to work he comes in and kneels by the bed and prays for our unborn son and our home and I believe it is something that sets my day in motion and puts angels in charge over me and it is so reassuring to know that my partner loves me enough to stop his day to care for my spiritual needs and well-being. everal years ago, I started a "project" that I saw online and liked the concept. It was to have what I called my "thankfulness jar" in which I would write on a slip of paper something I was thankful for that day and date it. Sometimes I might go an entire week and forget to write something down but always on New Year's Eve night I would sit down, dump all the pieces on a table and read through each one. So many things had happened over the year that I had totally forgotten about; but I was thankful for each and every one. Some were as simple as thanking God for the sunshine that day to thanking Him for keeping us safe on a long trip. This year, as we start 2018, I've vowed to put at least one slip of paper in that jar every day because I know there is always something worthwhile to praise God for, even the air we breathe. I mean, He tells us in His Word 365 times to not fear, so why not write at least 365 notes to thank Him for the times He's protected me or shown me favor? We all tend to take life for granted, going about our day, never actually thinking about all the ways He's there for us, providing for us, and we just casually

brush it aside like it's something we deserve. Well, guess what? We don't deserve anything! But because we are His children and He loves us so much, He wants to do those things for us and give us the desires of our heart if it aligns with His will for us. Why not open your eyes, ears, and hearts to be more aware of what goes on around you daily and do whatever you can to be a blessing to someone else. They don't even always need to know it was you doing it! In fact, it makes it that much more of a blessing when you don't get the credit for it but God does! It's like your little "secret" with Him! You would be amazed at how full your heart will be just helping others and you will never regret it, especially when you jot it down on that little slip of paper and at the end of the year, can read and re-live that happy moment when God used you to be an "angel unaware" in someone's life.

Stress and Anxiety ot being fond of flying, we were headed on a long-distance flight to a wedding, and I was not looking forward to the flight. With the time that it took to just board the plane, I had plenty of time to get nervous. So, as I was turning to walk down the aisle to my seat, I realized that our seats were not together to which I promptly turned around and was about to head back out the door when my husband blocked me. I’m sure my eyes said it all. My husband was telling me it would be alright, but what I heard was Charlie Brown’s teacher. I turned back around to see where our daughter was, and she seeing my state was about to climb over the seat in front of her. I’m not sure if her plans were to tackle me or run too. I was trying to squeeze by my husband who was not moving, and they were asking people to move so that we could sit together. You know it took lots of prayer and hand holding, but I made it to the wedding. We have all experienced stress and anxiety. Science calls this reaction “fight or flight.” Our bodies are made to use this chemical and hormonal energy to survive. However, in modern society, we are forced to contain this energy and stuff these powerful feelings inside. Prolonged, this buildup of emotional energy cannot be held in and people explode, breakdown, or overreact because they are overwhelmed. Over time, day-today interactions, these biochemical releases of adrenaline, glucose, and cortisol are built up as repressed unexpressed anger, frustration, and sadness and become chronic stress. Chronic stress has its effects on all systems of the body including the brain

with headache, insomnia, and inability to cope. There are studies that now show a link to decreased immunities and pathways to diseases such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Simply put, cumulative chronic stress affects the body, mind, and spirit. Philippians 4:6 says, “Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done.” And Philippians 4:9 says, “Keep putting into practice all that you learned and received from me [Jesus]-everything you heard from me and saw me doing. Then the God of peace will be with you.” And finally, 1 Peter 5:7 says, “Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you!”

How to find healing: 1. Take it to the Lord; pray. 2. Identify your symptoms and stressors. Make a list or start a daily log of events, symptoms, and responses. Note when you feel worse or better. 3. Create a plan to rewrite your thinking and reactions. *Did you have any control over the situation? Realize the things that you can’t fix, and that it’s all right. 4. Build on the positives. A good place to begin to change your thinking is reevaluating your priorities. Always leave some free time for yourself physically and mentally. 5. Consider a good healthy program of exercise and healthy eating. There are herbs, vitamins, and minerals that can help with relaxation, immune, and inflammatory responses.

Angels in Our Midst re angels always invisible? I would answer an emphatic “No!” based on the woman who crossed my path in October of 1984. I made the 9-hour drive moving from Burlington, North Carolina to Gadsden, Alabama believing God, at that time, had called me to work with teenagers at a church. Single, green, and skinny at age 22, I tried to pour my heart into the lives of the young people for 3 years. I remember learning how to water-ski there off of a Pontoon boat on the Coosa River plus also learning to snow ski at one of their youth retreats held in the mountains of North Carolina. An Angel by the name of Nancy Silvey offered to wash my clothes and feed me at her home surrounded by her husband Babe and their children. I fell in love with her sweet tea, coffee, and hot-fudge cake. As the years cooked along I witnessed Nancy’s unconditional love that she gave her family (including her mother who was sick) and many others. Her selfless giving and listening ear provided a safe-place for me to share my worries over not being married and other life concerns while I held on to a cup of her java. Though I do not live in Alabama anymore, the line of communication stays open via our texts and phone calls. Thankfully, I can say we have been close friends now for over 30 years! Today, she ministers to the folks who enter a place called “Way of the Cross” also in Gadsden, Alabama. According to their purpose statement: “Our mission is to show Christian love by serving meals and other support to the homeless, poor, and to anyone in need of God’s provision.” This non-profit organization also offers a daily Bible study, worship services, haircuts, and shower facilities for men and women. Nancy prepares and serves hot meals to the needy and down-and-out multiple times throughout the week after picking up donated shipments of food at grocery stores and stocking their shelves. Besides her physical acts of service, she regularly grabs

ll insurance carriers are required to offer a wellness visit each year for all patients, free of charge. An annual wellness visit is a time for you to meet with your healthcare provider to create a personalized healthcare prevention and screening plan, based on your age, gender, and medical conditions. During one of these visits a healthcare provider will discuss screening for things such as diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, and cancer. Please don’t let your fear of the unpleasant (needle sticks, mammograms, colonoscopies, etc) deter you from scheduling an annual wellness visit. At the end of the day, all you’ve signed up for is a conversation.
