Letter from the Editor

A

s the school year becomes busier and more challenging, an element of support and encouragement is needed. There are those who bring out the best in everyone they meet. We have all known them—coaches, teachers, parents, and bosses who possess a knack for encouraging and inspiring others to do and be their best. Becoming an encourager doesn’t happen by chance, though. It takes a concentrated effort to keep our communication skills sharp. I read a story of two lumberjacks, a young one and an older one, who raced to see who could cut down the most trees in a single day. When the day was completed, the winner was obvious. The older lumberjack had won hands down. The younger lumberjack could not believe it. “How could you cut down more trees than I did?” he asked. “Every hour I saw you sitting down, while I kept right on cutting. I don’t understand.” The older lumberjack replied, “Every time I sat down, I sharpened my saw. Why didn’t you stop to sharpen your saw?” “I didn’t have time to sharpen the saw,” the younger man said emphatically. “I was too busy sawing!”

Sharpening the saw of encouragement is not just a good idea; it is a Biblical principle: “If you don’t sharpen your ax, it will be harder to use” (see Ecc. 10:10 CEV). In her book, Watch Out! Godly Women on the Loose, Corallie Buchanan makes these opposing, but encouraging statements: “You see limitations; God sees opportunities. You see faults; God sees growth. You see problems; God sees solutions. You see limitations; God sees possibilities. You see life; God sees eternity.” A scripture passage in Luke 6:35-38 is often used when taking offerings and referring to material blessings, but Jesus commands all Christians, “Be ye . . . merciful.” To make sure we get the point, He then spells out four ways to do this: • By not judging others • By not condemning others • By forgiving offenders • By giving and sharing with others. My favorite part of this promise is verse 38: “Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you” (NIV). Try it. I know it works!

Gò0dNews for Women The Whole World Is in God’s Hands Pain in this life is inevitable, but with God, that pain becomes manageable.

T

by Nicole Wiley

here was nothing ever written nor spoken that said that life would be easy. Everybody experiences different kinds of pain whether it be an injury, a loss of a family member, or, seemingly the worst, heartbreak. Words that tend to coincide with heartbreak are bitterness and revenge. I think we should change that statistic and instead turn those words into compassion, forgiveness, and above all, unshakeable faith in God. Ephesians 4:31-32 says, “Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you” (NIV). There have been instances in my life where I have been wronged, where I felt like I didn’t deserve the things I was being put through. Forgiveness was the key to my triumph over these situations, because when we learn to forgive others like Christ forgave us, we realize that the situation acted in our benefit. After all, God gives His toughest battles to His toughest soldiers. In the fifteen years I have been alive, I can faithfully say that He will never lead you to something you can’t get through. There have also been instances where I have not been wronged, but I felt the aftermath of situations I had no part in. Even here, when I have experienced the worst feeling of heartbreak, forgiveness is key.

14 // March 2017

When we forgive others, and even ourselves, God’s favor is on us 100 percent. If the Creator of the world can forgive us of all of the baggage that we carry around, we can surely show the same forgiveness for ourselves and others. Above all of the things that I have learned from my experience with a broken heart, my unshakeable trust in God is by far the most evident. Through my eyes, I can see the perfect life for me, and I can see what and who will be a part of it. I soon come to realize that my idea of perfect was not at all the right idea. God has protected me from so much potential harm and heartbreak that in everything I do, I must trust His ways over mine. I have certainly experienced this word we call heartbreak, but I’ve also experienced the love that has been sent from above that makes me want to redefine the word heartbreak. My heart may be scarred, but I can tell you ingenuously, my heart can never be truly broken, because I have the everlasting love of God holding it together. “No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, nor angels nor demons, nor things present nor things future, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8:37-39 NIV).

Nicole Wiley is a junior at Cleveland High School who attends First Baptist Church.

Going to Granny’s by Angie Parris

s a little girl, I always looked forward to visiting my Granny and Papaw Morris. There was always something to snack on. Leftover biscuits, fresh radishes from the garden, sugar cookies in the butterfly topped cookie jar or sometimes, a marvelous two layer peanut butter cake could be found sitting there on the kitchen table. Round, layered cakes always seemed so fancy. A yummy cake with peanut butter in the cake and frosting was wonderful. The only thing better was a hug from my granny! Yes, I do love peanut butter!

Cake

2 cups all purpose flour 1.5 cups sugar 1/2 cup shortening 1 cup milk 3.5 tsps baking powder 1 tsp salt 1 tsp vanilla extract 3 eggs 1/2 cup smooth peanut butter

Directions

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Grease and flour two2 nine inch round pans. Mix together the flour, baking powder, and salt; set aside. In a large bowl, cream the sugar and

shortening until it is light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, beating thoroughly after each addition. Add flour mixture alternately with milk, beating just to combine. Stir in vanilla and peanut butter. Pour batter into prepared pans. Bake at 350 degrees for 40 to 45 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool on racks before frosting.

Peanut butter frosting 2 cups sugar 3/4 cups milk 1/4 cup shortening 1/4 cup margarine 1/4 tsp salt 1 tsp vanilla

1/2 cup creamy peanut butter

Directions

Combine sugar, milk, shortening, margarine, and salt. Bring to a rolling boil in a heavy saucepan, stirring constantly to prevent scorching. Once it reaches a boil, let it boil for two minutes without stirring. Remove from heat and add the vanilla and peanut butter. Beat until smooth and quickly spread on layer one, top with the second layer and cover with the frosting. The frosting will set up quickly on the cake, so pour it warm, and smooth it quickly. Enjoy!

Gò0dNews for Health & Fitness Why Motivation Alone Can’t Help You Change

“Only the disciplined are truly free. The undisciplined are slaves to moods, appetites, and passions.” —Stephan Covey, an American Educator, Author, and Businessman by Megan Stockburger

W

hy do so many people have trouble keeping their New Year’s Resolutions? Amazingly, Statistics Brain Research Institute reports that 42.4 percent of Americans never succeed in keeping their resolutions. Certainly, we want the goal—so what makes it so hard? Why We Make Plans But Don’t Take Action The first issue that strikes us when we try to keep our resolutions is time inconsistency. This is the tendency our brains have for valuing immediate rewards more than something coming in the future. When you make a resolution—like setting a goal to lose weight—you are actually making plans for your future self. It is easy for your brain to see the value in taking the actions that will get those longerterm benefits. However, when it comes time to make the decision to eat the salad instead of the fast food burger, you are no longer making a choice for your future self. You are now in the moment and your brain is thinking about your present self! The reality is that our present self really likes instant gratification, not long-term payoff! This is why motivation alone can’t help you change. Your brain values long-term benefits as long as they are in the future! It values immediate gratification in the present moment. The Ability to Delay Gratification The good news is there is something that works much better than mere motivation alone—discipline. Discipline allows us to sacrifice instant gratification in favor of long-term goals. In fact, the ability to do this is a great predictor of success in life. A disciplined person

24 // March 2017

lists personal goals and works until those goals are accomplished despite failures and setbacks. How to Take Action and Succeed Being undisciplined is always bad for our selfworth or self-esteem. For most, the guilt and frustration from avoiding what needs to be done is worse than the pain of actually doing the work! In the words of researcher Eliezer Yudkowsky, “On a moment-to-moment basis, being in the middle of doing the work is usually less painful than being in the middle of procrastinating.” So then, why do we still procrastinate? James Clear, an author in behavioral psychology and a motivational speaker put it best: “Because it’s not being in the work that is hard, it’s starting the work. The friction that prevents us from taking action is usually centered around starting the behavior. Once you begin, it’s often less painful to do the work. This is why it is often more important to build the habit of getting started when you’re beginning a new behavior than it is to worry about whether or not you are successful at the new habit.” So take action. Put all of your effort and discipline into making it as easy as possible for you to get started. The key is not to rely on motivation or good intentions alone but to plan where and how and when you will do your new habit(s), and then you can use your discipline to simply get started. You will find you are already halfway there! Megan Stockburger is a fitness consultant and personal trainer at Bradley Wellness Center in Dalton, GA. Bethesda Project Missions

“Our vision can be summed up in three components: reaching the lost and the hurting, restoring dignity through empowerment, and rebuilding communities.” by G. Emmanuel Tchoua

I

n June 2006, I heeded a call to go to Cameroon,

curb malnutrition, sickness, and reduce poverty,

my native country, to launch a mission outreach

but we still have a long way to go. Therefore, we

among the rural poor who represent 70 percent

believe that spiritual problems require spiritual

of that nation’s population. The many crises such as wars, famines,

We Africans owe a great debt of gratitude

to those men and women who labored in very

organizations such as World Vision and others help

news of our Lord Jesus Christ. Africa has one the highest rates of conversion from pagan religions to Christ. However, our research and experience leads us to conclude that more needs to be done.

Ten Years of Labor

For the past ten years, I have traveled to

Cameroon twice a year (spring and fall) to evangelize, preach, teach, train leaders, and encourage new believers. We have planted churches in the villages. We have acquired 24 acres of land debt free for our future campus base. Our members have grown vegetables and native produce such as cassava, plantain, and coco yams for the poor.

Lessons Learned

1. The Teaching. Our message is the gospel of

Jesus Christ. Eternal life is found in the Son of God. Our assurance comes only through trust and faith in Him. Next, we have to tell it to others. I encourage my listeners to spend time in the Word of God. There are many distractions competing for their attention (TV, Internet, idle talks on politics, and sports). They tried our teachings

way for two reasons: first, to help me feed on the faithfulness of God, and second to help the people to whom we are ministering to learn how to put their trust in God for their needs and not men or organizations.

Haiti Outreach

I went to Haiti for the first time in December

2004. Since then, I have been invited back four times for ministry. In August 2015, we launched a “Backyard Garden” with eight Haitian youth in the city of Les Cayes. I observed a lack of vegetables in the diet that was served to kids for breakfast. Back to Les Cayes in April 2016, I had a good surprise from our newly organized young farmers. From one plot of land, we acquired four more with a membership of twenty-five. The success of that initiative reached the city of Jeremie—the town hit hardest by Hurricane Matthew in 2016. I traveled to Jeremie last December to organize a new group of young and old farmers who were eager to replicate what happened in Les Cayes. for themselves and testified of many miracles and transformation in their personal lives and family. 2. The People. People matter. We have great people in Cameroon who are open to learn and follow. We have discovered that God has blessed the nation on earth with the necessary resources to meet their needs. If they are motivated, they can help themselves, but humility is needed to help people discover their hidden talents. Our mission at Bethesda Project Missions is helping our listeners/followers find their Maker and in the process of finding themselves. 3. The Season. What a time to be alive, but time is running out! Daily events confirm it. The harvest is ripe. The Lord is at the door. Urgency is the word ringing in my ears. Bethesda Project Mission Cameroon started in June 2006. Since its inception, we have always prayed and fasted for every penny. Usually the money comes in at the last minute. It's not easy to wait, but it's exciting to witness again and again the faithfulness of our Lord. I chose that

Pastor G. Emmanuel Tchoua serves as senior pastor of Bethesda House of Mercy, Dalton, Georgia, since December 1999. He is married to Regine and they have six beautiful children: Zepheniah, Asher, Ed, and three girls: Siphra (an Iraq war veteran), Joelle, and Phoebe. Emmanuel is a graduate of Church of God Theological Seminary (M.Div) in Cleveland, TN. He is also an ordained bishop with the same denomination. Prior to coming to the USA in 1992, he served as a civil servant in the Cameroonian government. He is actively involved as community leader, and has served as a volunteer chaplain in both the Whitfield County Jail and Hamilton Medical Center. He is also a member of the Whitfield County Concerned Clergy.

After observing the children in Haiti who were walking barefoot, the Lord stirred our hearts to collect shoes for them for Christmas. For the last two years, the people of Dalton and Chatsworth have sent more than 800 pairs of shoes to Haiti. Since December 2016, we have an office in the city of Les Cayes. From Fear to Faith

A

A Testimony of God’s Faithfulness by Paulette Lewis

little over a year ago the Lord impressed on my heart to give more to missions than my husband and I felt we were able to give. I thought of ways I might invest our small amount and let God give the increase. I had no problem trusting God as long as I was in prayer, but when it came to actually putting those prayers into action, my faith turned to fear. The project was to be for one year. We decided to cook a different item each month, post it on Facebook, offer the dish for a donation to whoever would be willing to place an order, and just leave the rest up to the Lord. Every penny donated would be turned into our local church’s missions fund under the name of the person giving the money, so we would not profit at all. My biggest battle, by far, came at the very beginning of the project. January rolled around and we decided to bake coconut pies. I baked a sample, took pictures of it, had my post ready to go on Facebook, and then it happened. I was overcome with a fear so great I could not push the post button. Normally, I am a “fly-by-the-seat-of-my-pants” type of personality and I often say, “A day without an adventure is a lost day.” I love adventure, but this day I completely lost my adventurous spirit. I was totally consumed with fear. What would people think of such an

38 // March 2017

idea? Suppose no one places an order; can I face failure? I pleaded with God and asked if He was sure this was His plan and not mine. Then I quoted all the scriptures I could think of about faith, got my head on straight again, and in spite of my fears, I hit the post button and the deed was done. Oh how I wanted to keep Facebook open and just sit and watch to see if there was any activity on my post. But I closed my iPad, found something to do to keep my mind occupied for a while, and then I checked the post. Only the Lord knows what joy and thanksgiving flooded over me the moment I saw my first order, then two orders, and eventually we had so many orders we had to close the post. Now the year has ended. The original goal—which was a lofty one—was $5,000. By June we had already exceeded that goal. We upped it to $10,000. When the last money was collected in December, the final amount was $14,195. Isn’t that just truly amazing to see how if we trust God and do what He asks us to do, all of our fear turns to faith and God gets all the glory? And it was one of the most exciting and adventurous years of my life. Paulette Lewis and her husband, Charlie, have been married for forty-five years. They have three daughters, seven grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.

ò0 Mission Statement:

W

e believe when people are equipped, motivated, and passionately engaged in living out their faith in Jesus Christ they have the potential to be world changers. Our mission is to bring people into a dynamic relationship with Jesus Christ—a relationship that empowers them to see how God can work through individual personalities, situations, and talents. Christ was an activist, he did not neglect the needs of the people as He brought His message. We strive to encourage everyone to look more like Christ by reaching outside of themselves to serve the needs of others—at home, at school, in communities, and across the world.

Christian Magazine

Writer Guidelines: Who: Our writers range from pastors,

professors, and professional writers to stay at home moms and dads, business professionals, and others who have a desire to reach out to people through words of encouragement.

What: We believe that it is important to laugh

together, praise each other, encourage one another, and to offer biblical advice. Articles can be directed toward everyone, or from woman to woman, or man to man. We love to share recipes and family traditions as well. We ask that articles be kept to a 500 word maximum. We’d love to hear from you!

Where: Please send submissions to brooke.goodnews@gmail.com Why: Because God has not intended for us to

just survive. We believe that we are intended to reach out to love and encourage each other. God has brought each of us through tough times, blessed us, and made the “impossible” possible. Let’s, together, share the love of Jesus Christ.
