Hello Friends, We want to take a moment to tell you who we are and what we are about. Our names are Matt and Bethany Ruckman and we have four beautiful children, Brendon, Kailey, Andrew, and Leah Jean. We live in Cleveland and love what this town has to offer! We have started GoodNews Christian Magazine because we feel that when God, family, and community are combined, lives will be changed. GoodNews Christian Magazine is a complimentary, Christian lifestyle publication. You can find us throughout the community in retail establishments, churches, restaurants, and more. Our magazine opens the door for Christians to work together to grow and strengthen our community through relevant editorial and effective advertising. GoodNews Christian Magazine is written by men and women in the community who love and serve the Lord. Our hearts are open and willing to be used by God to reach out to the community to spread the GoodNews!
Letter from the Editor
J
uly is a month of celebrations. Many of the articles this month deal with the writer struggling to find a God-given calling, God spoke to me through his Word: “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men” Colossians 23:3 (NIV). “Whatever you do . . .” includes everything from homemaking to teaching, to keeping books, to writing. To confirm my calling, God spoke through a friend who phoned me late one evening and said, “There’s a scripture in the Old Testament I believe the Lord wants me to
share with you.” As I was turning in my Bible to Jeremiah, I thought, Jeremiah was the weeping prophet who spoke words of doom and gloom to God’s people. I don’t need that. What I need is hope! And the message I received was certainly one of hope: “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. (29:11 NIV). To accept your work as a calling is to receive a sense of purpose that brings a new passion not known before. It’s still work, but work that is more fulfilling and meaningful. Four characteristics usually accompany a divine calling. 1. A calling is distinctive—unique to each individual. So don’t wait for the blinding light to bring you to your knees. God speaks to us in different manners, but most often He speaks through His Word. 2. A calling may be difficult to fulfill. It’s frustrating if you’re work is not in your calling. We want to change, but sometimes this means leaving your “comfort zone” and moving into new territory. It’s risky. 3. A calling disturbs the devil. There is great joy in working in your calling, but there is also great grief. Satan will hinder in every way possible, sometimes using good people to confuse and complicate. This is when most people abandon their calling, assuming that it wasn’t really God who called them. 4. A calling develops into great joy! A true calling reveals its presence with enjoyment and a renewed energy—a passion that comes with doing what God called us to be. The familiar story of two brick layers points out the difference in a job and a calling. The first brick layer was asked, “What are you doing?” “I’m laying bricks,” he replied with a cynical attitude that said, “Can’t you see what I’m doing?” When the second brick layer was asked what he was doing, he replied, “I’m building a cathedral.” That’s a calling! But when we try to operate from the list, we get off-track from living in grace and end up living in legalism which results in frustration. We see this list of things we are supposed to do and we build an expectation of how well we are supposed to be at doing them. We live up to that for a couple of weeks and then life happens. We fall short, get behind, get lazy, and we feel guilty because we don’t think we are good enough. And we all have the same thought, I just can’t be consistent enough. Someone tells you to do better and now the list has become a burden and a performance. So if we don’t start with the list, then what?

Your kingdom come. Your will be done.” Everything in that prayer communicates surrender. So here is my challenge to you: Embrace the practice of daily surrender in the prayer, “I can do nothing without You. Help me know You and follow You. Do in me whatever You desire.” Let that be the springboard for your walk with God.
Start here−humble, surrender. Everything on the list makes sense only when we begin with the constant pursuit of surrender. One of my favorite authors said, “Until a humility which will rest in nothing less than the end and death of self; which gives

Biomarkers: The Keys to Prolonging Vitality
In the 1990s, researcher’s William Evans and Irwin Rosenberg in studying aging at the Center for Health and Human Development at Tufts University developed a way to define age physiologically called “Biomarkers.” Biomarkers, as Evans and Rosenberg used the term, were those critical biological functions that influence vitality. To help people, they chose only those biomarkers that we know how to alter, even in older people, like lean body (muscle) mass, strength, VO2, blood pressure, and insulin sensitivity. Other vital biomarkers are things like blood sugar, cholesterol levels, plus vital hormones like thyroid, cortisol, or testosterone. By the twenty-first century, other enterprising physicians like Dr. Mike Nichols from the Tempus Clinic began documenting profound improvements in all of these parameters and publishing his research with specific protocols aimed at improving health and reversing aging—right down to the cellular level. It has now become clear that your chronological age has little to do with how old you feel, or how old you are biologically. It would be better for you to forget your age and to think about your body only in terms of the biomarkers above. While aging is certainly a biological reality, it is possible to bend the aging curve from a straight downward decline (starting around age 40) to one that is almost flat well past your sixties! Sometimes when God is asking us to do things that we know will take us out of our comfort zone and put us right in the midst of the battle, it can be terrifying. Sometimes we tend to forget Who is asking and start saying “I, I, I.” As I would study and read God’s Word, it seemed like I was always reading the books that were telling

over this decision. They were my strength that God losing courage because I knew that anytime you set out to serve God, you are met with opposition. I knew that by starting CCMA I might upset some people and might even lose some friends, but I also knew that if I was going to take that step of faith, then I was going to have to make sacrifices. God’s Word tells us that we will have to make sacrifices and suffer for His name sake (read Acts 4:122). In 1 Peter 4:12-14 the writer tells us, “Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal among you, which comes upon you for your testing, as though some strange thing were happening to you; but to the degree
that you share the sufferings of Christ, keep on rejoicing; so that also at the revelation of His glory, you may rejoice with exaltation. If you are reviled for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the spirit of glory and of God rests upon you” (NASB). So as we would pray for God to help us with courage, strength, and boldness to do what He was asking; the more I knew that, the more we were going to take that step. It wasn’t until almost two years from the time God put it in my heart, which was 2008, that we finally birthed CCMA.
Our Curriculum and Staff
After countless hours of prayer and seeking God’s
wisdom, we decided on our curriculum, which would consist of prayer and scripture memorization, along with traditional martial arts training. We centered everything around Christ from the design of our CCMA logo, testing of our students, opening and closing prayer to even allowing time for our students to voice any praise or prayer requests at the end of class. As with anything new, we started out slow. We held our first training session in our backyard. After we grew out of that space, God moved us to partner with Emmaus Baptist Church. Before we were even members of the church, the leadership team graciously allowed us to hold our classes in their facility. With the help of Emmaus Baptist Church, we were then blessed with the ability to rent an “older” gym in the Carbondale area of South Dalton. We were there for several years before we made a huge decision to move to our current location on the north end of Dalton in the Rocky Face area. God has blessed us by bringing others into our lives like Elizabeth Doss who helps my wife Lisa run our CCMA Chatsworth dojo in which we partner with Faith Worship Center to hold classes. God has also placed
Rebecca and Sara Johnson in our CCMA family to lead our Little Warrior class in Dalton. These classes are specifically designed for the younger martial artists ages four to eight. CCMA teaches traditional martial arts, self-defense training, point sparring, locks and breaks, and weapons katas. While teaching and training in the martial art is grand and glorious, our main focus and goal is to share Christ and share the love of Christ. We tell our students often that we might be the only Jesus others may ever see and that we should live our lives with that in mind. Someone who doesn’t know the Lord will come into a karate school to train while they may never step foot in a church. CCMA has the opportunity to make an impact on the lives of others and that is our ministry and our vision. If there is one thing I have learned in life, it is that anything can be used to honor God. God gives us gifts, talents, abilities, and even the know-how to use them. It is up to us to make that choice. As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord (Josh. 24:15 NASB).

Water, Water Everywhere . . .

ave you ever been really, really thirsty . . . like the kind of thirst after a sporting event or just setting outside helping your parents do yardwork, or the kind that a bottle of ice cold water could not satisfy? I have, and so has Jesus. He was just like you and me, He got hot and needed water. He lived in the desert where water was scarce. I have been studying the Book of John lately. I came across a story that you have heard if you have been in church any amount to time in your life. It is about the Samaritan Woman at the Well. Let me set this up for you. Jesus and His disciples were traveling through a town called Samaria. Jewish people usually avoided this town at all cost; they would just take the bypass around this city. But Jesus wanted to go there, He wanted to go downtown. This was not by accident; it was intentional. While He was there, He ran into a Woman at the Well and asked her for a drink while His disciple/crew went to find food. She asked Him, “Why are You asking me for water?” Jesus answered just like Jesus can and said to her, “If you knew the gift of God, you would ask me for a drink” (John 4:10). Now keep in mind that Jesus did not have a water pail, so the woman looked at Him like He was crazy. She responded to him, “How are you going to draw water much less “living” water without a pail?” He told her about living water, the kind that keeps you from thirsting that comes from God (not the ground); true salvation. They kept talking for some time and the disciples were getting anxious because

they wanted to eat and run. Culturally, they did not like being there because the Samaritans were outcasts. The woman asked Jesus if He was a prophet because her fathers worshiped on this mountain (see John 4:20). She also said that salvation was only for the Jews. His reply to her was that the day will come where all be able to worship God anywhere. Then the woman realized the truth that Jesus had “living” water. She dropped her pail and ran into town to spread the news He gave her. How many times have we been in a situation where we thought that we were better than someone else? We did not want to get out of our comfort zone due to fear of what people would think about us, or any other reasons of doubt. I know it is a struggle for me. Jesus said that all people will be able to worship Him, not just the people who fit into our social circle or go to our youth group or on our sports teams. Jesus went across cultural and ethnic barriers to speak with this person. When the woman dropped her pail, it symbolized her letting go of her sin. She carried it every day up the mountain to get water and now she was free. She had living water. Now she did not have to carry her sin anymore. With news like this to share, I don’t see the reason why we cannot step out and destroy our “boxes” that we and our friends fit into. Jesus called us to share His message so the world would not thirst anymore. And this is truly good news and great-tasting water.
Ethan McRae is thirty-three years old and he has been married to his wife, Jennifer, for almost eleven years. They have two wonderful kids. Their daughter Bailey and their son Bryce. He Will Be There

e all have tribulations, right? My life is no exception. Within three months, we lost two close family friends. After these losses, our hearts were heavy, but my family continued on. Then in February 2016, I was laid off my job of twenty-five years. To say the least, I was devastated. I couldn’t understand the changes going on in my life. But, I just knew I had to keep my faith in the Lord. Both friends were close prayer partners, and I was the sole income for my family. But little did I know more change was coming. Soon afterwards, my dad was diagnosed with cancer and passed away within ten days. My heart was broken, but I had peace that Dad was with the Lord. So again, we continued on. I did get another job. However, as grateful as I was, I wasn’t sure if I could afford insurance at my new company, so I held off. In January of 2017, my family and I went on a trip to Knoxville. On Saturday, we attended church, and I was fine. Sunday, I was extremely sick. But because I had no insurance I hesitated to go to the doctor. However, after two days at home sick, I was no better. Thursday, I went to the Emergency Room. By that night, I was airlifted to Erlanger. At this point, I had thought that all these other situations were so devastating until I reached this point of my life. All I knew was that I was in serious trouble when they put me on the helicopter.

I prayed to God as we lifted off the ground and that’s the last I remember until I woke up in MICU. I was so weak I couldn’t roll over by myself; I was incubated and couldn’t stay awake. My family came to see me and the nurse told my daughter I would have a long recovery and would have to be on medications. My daughter kindly told the nurse that we would believe the Lord. I spent the next fifteen days hospitalized and recovering from what I later found out to be sepsis. After fifteen days in the hospital, I got to home. While at a doctor’s follow-up, a nurse told me, “God wasn’t done with you yet.” I kept thinking about what the nurse said and I knew she was right. I was allowed to get insurance while I was in the hospital, which could only be God. I could have died, but God didn’t let me. The Word of God says in Hebrews 13:5, “I will never leave you nor forsake you” (NKJV). Even though I have gone through all of this, God gave me peace when I needed it. I can truly say to anyone who is going through similar situations, “Hold to your faith in God.” So each day, I look forward to each morning, knowing that God is with me every day in every situation.

et me start by saying, “Praise the Lord for all He has done in my life.” Before I came to the knowledge of Christ, I felt as though life was hopeless without a real meaning; as though I were just existing, and the word “love” was just an empty word that people use to gain something. So in this hopeless state I began to drink and do drugs heavily and lived this way for several years. With this life of drugs and alcohol came a life of lying, cheating, fighting, dealing, and jail. I became so low and hopeless, there came a point I thought of taking my own life. There were family members who said, “Just let him go; let him rot. He will never amount to anything.” I never knew a life-changing experience was about to take place when I met my wife Cynthia, who invited me to church. Through time, patience, and God working, I eventually went to church with her for the first time. There I heard the gospel of Christ; how He died and paid a price that I rightly owed. He paid for my lying, cheating, fighting, and drug dealing with His own blood. Scared of what I heard, I left and went back to my same old lifestyle. However, that following week, there was some type of feeling that would not leave me. I drank as always and the feeling was still there. That conviction and the feeling of something missing in my life was continuously there. On Thursday of that week in the cab of my old pickup truck, the Spirit of God

came to me. He revealed to me for the first time that I did not have a promise of life fifteen feet down the road. It was right there that I prayed and told the Lord that if He would allow me to make it back to His house on Sunday, I would make things right with Him. (I didn’t know I could be saved anywhere, anytime.) That Sunday, we had a guest preacher. The message he delivered was almost as though he read my mail. At the end of the message I heard these words: “If you confess the Lord Jesus with your mouth and believe in your heart that God raised Jesus from the dead, you shall be saved” (Rom. 10:9). My desire was to leave and go back to my same old life until I remembered my prayer in the cab of that truck. I let go of the pew, walked to the altar at Temple Baptist Church in August of 1990, fell on my face. I repented of my sins and asked Christ to save me, come in to my heart and be the Lord of my life, and He did just that! From that day to present, I have been a work in progress−learning the true meaning of love and life. An abundant love and life above anything I could have ever thought or imagined came into my life, and my friend, He will do the same for you if you will just ask Him while He is near. any people go through life wondering what is their purpose? They develop this feeling of self-doubt and limit themselves to the bare minimum. I used to be that person. For most of my youth, I struggled with weight issues. In fact, on my first day of kindergarten, I became known as the "Fat Kid." My sense of self-worth came when I was just twenty-two years old. At this age, my weight had escalated to 305 pounds. I had begun developing knee problems, chest pains, and shortness of breath. The journey I was descending on was definitely not where anyone looks forward to being in at any point in life. I prayed multiple nights for some help. In June 2010, I attended an autograph-signing where I met professional wrestler Diamond Dallas Page who had developed his own yoga program. Unlike traditional yoga, this type of yoga had a unique twist that included traditional yoga positions−dynamic resistance, core conditioning, and very high cardio. I started the workout a few days later and I struggled, but over the next six months of eating correctly, doing the workouts and running, I lost 138 pounds. I no longer had those health issues. In September 2011, I lost my Mammaw to a heart attack. I began getting angry at God and I lost all love for myself. On April Fool’s Day (of all days), my wife told me that she was pregnant and, at that point, I was totally overwhelmed. Here I am married, still living with my

parents, and working a minimum-wage job. There comes a point where you just can't help but wonder, Why me Lord? I became depressed and just gave up completely. By December 2014, I weighed 342 pounds. It wasn't until I went to the doctor and was told my blood pressure was stroke level that I opened my eyes and looked back to God. I was twenty-seven years old; I had a wife and daughter, and a career. We had our own home; yet, I was still living in pity . . . but why? I decided at that point that being there for my family was far more important than any slice of pizza I would ever eat. Since December 2014, I've taken up running again and have even become an instructor of DDP Yoga, which I teach weekly at the John Davis Recreation Center. One of my biggest goals currently is to run my first full marathon this November. I'm now over 100 pounds lighter from my heaviest and though it has been a struggle from time to time, I have managed to keep it off. My journey doesn't end until God says it does. Sometimes I look at things and I wonder what if, but I believe God lets us fall sometimes to see what we really want in life. I'm no longer that fat kid with no self-worth. I am somebody, and I want others to see that in themselves.

What types of wounds can be treated?
Extra care is needed for wounds that have difficulty healing on their own or with standard treatment. Wounds can result from the following; • Venous Insufficiency • Diabetic complications of the feet and legs • Peripheral vascular disease • Pressure injuries • Radiation burns or damage • Bone infections (Osteomyelitis) • Surgical wounds • Traumatic wounds and burns.
What is venous insufficiency?
Venous insufficiency is a disorder of the veins caused by inadequate return of blood from the legs back to the heart and lungs. Normally, one-way valves in your deeper leg veins keep blood flowing toward the heart, and leg muscles also pump the blood forward towards the heart. With venous insufficiency, vein walls are weakened and valves are damaged, causing blood to back-up and pool in the vein. Fluid may leak out of the vein into the surrounding tissue, which can lead to breakdown of the tissue and an ulcer. Some common venous problems are varicose veins, thrombophlebitis, deep venous thrombosis (DVT or blood clot), and venous stasis ulcers.
Risk Factors
Heredity, obesity, smoking, lack of physical exercise, surgery, prolonged standing, and pregnancy are some of the risk factors associated with venous disease.

Signs and Symptoms
Signs and symptoms of venous insufficiency are dry itchy skin, pain that may disappear when walking, swollen legs and feet, brown discoloration of the skin, and leg pain when your legs are dependent. The skin may become irritated or crack if you scratch it. It may also become red and swollen, crusted, or weepy. Skin sores (venous ulcers or stasis ulcers) may develop. These can often form on the sides of the lower leg above the ankle and below the calf. These ulcers can be slow to heal and come back if measures are not taken to prevent them.
Treatment Options
Your healthcare provider can perform a physical exam and ask about your medical history and symptoms. Your provider may recommend: • Using elastic or compression stockings to reduce swelling • Avoid standing or sitting for long periods of time • Keeping legs elevated when sitting • Consultation with a wound-care specialist • Consultation with a vascular specialist.

We offer state-of-the-art wound care, including skin substitutes and grafts and hyperbaric oxygen therapy in a convenient setting close to home. A referral is typically not required.
