long U.S. Highway 64 in the scenic forest of Southeast Tennessee, the Ocoee River has cut a steep, winding channel into a mountainside of hard rock. People come from all over the nation to experience the thrills and spills of rafting the Ocoee. The articles in the August issue have much in common with a river trip. We usually climb into the boat when the river is pleasant and calm, and we have confidence that we’ll reach our destination sooner or later. We are unaware that just around the bend may be an adversity that threatens to capsize our boat and leave us stranded on the rocks. These trouble spots along the river of life may take the form of heartbreak from a lifethreatening illness, a troubled marriage, rebellious teenagers, or the treacherous whirlpool of financial woes. Any one of these adversities could pull us under to defeat. Even if we stay afloat, our mental serenity and balance seem all but impossible. If we’re not careful, these emotional rapids can also drown out the still, small voice of God speaking to us. From the time we are born, you and I negotiate the course of this river with its rapids of adversity and confusing currents. We do not ask to be born. We don’t choose our parents, our siblings, our ethnic heritage, our social or economic status. So we ride the river, guided by the hand of God, even when we don’t know He is there. Often we feel isolated in this frightening experience questioning, Why me? Sometimes we believe that we should escape these problems and difficult transitions because we are Christians. When the captive people of Judah cried out against the trials of life in their strange land, the prophet Jeremiah sent them a message from God: “For I know the plans I have for you . . . plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future (29:11 NIV). I believe this message is a watchword for our lives for now. God will give us the power and the strength to stay in the boat and go on downstream, but He never expects us to navigate it alone. Through every adversity, He supplies a “raft of grace” to carry us over the rapids and around each new bend in the stream. Take time to gear up for new challenges, to unfold new horizons, to realize new dreams, and to rediscover God’s strength and faith for a truly fulfilling summer.

Rise and Shine
“Direct your children onto the right path, and when they are older, they will not leave it.” —Proverbs 22:6 NLT by Chris Mullis
Seven A.M. Thursday (or any other school day)
Daddy: “Rise and shine! It’s time for school!” Daughter: “I don’t want to get up!” Daddy: “Come on, we don’t want to be late.” Daughter: “I hate getting up!” Daddy: “Me too, but it’s time to get up and get ready for school.” We drive our children to do what’s best for them even when they don’t want to. “Brush your teeth. Eat your vegetables. Do your homework. Get out of that bed and go to school.” Sometimes parents can feel like drill sergeants whose sole purpose in life is to bark orders at their children, but that’s not who we are. We are loving parents who want what’s best for our kids. If we shirked our responsibility, then our children would all have toothaches, poor health, and no education. Just as we make sure our children attend school to enrich their minds, we also should make sure our children attend church to enrich their spirits. Teeth that aren’t brushed become rotten; minds that aren’t educated become dull. In the same way, spirits that aren’t fed by the Word of God begin to wither and die; and children who don’t attend church regularly often grow to be adults with dull, rotten spirits. This is not what God wants for our children, and it’s not what we want either.
6 // August 2017
We are blessed to have many wonderful churches in our area with excellent programs for children and youth that teach them the love of Christ as they grow into adulthood. How thankful we should be for our faithful Sunday school teachers and youth leaders whose passion is to teach our young people the way of Christ that leads to eternal life. What a blessing that we are not alone in raising our children up in the faith. Sometimes, of course, we may have to get our young ones to church even when they (or we) don’t feel like it because we know how kids can be and how they don’t always “feel like” doing what is best for them. But that’s okay because we know what’s best, and we are willing to do it because of our great love for our kids.

Student Loans
The use of student loans to finance college education become attractive but has hidden traps by many situations. It’s important to understand the possible following consequences. by Ron Peterson
O
ver the past couple of decades, the use of student loans has become more and more attractive to finance college educations. Unfortunately, repayment of those loans can be fraught with hidden traps caused by any number of situations. Those might include rushing to get financing, not reading the fine print, not knowing the lender or unexpected difficulties when the time comes to begin repayment. In any event, the law of
unexpected consequences may often become reality. An article titled "Student Loans: What you need to know before signing," was recently published in the Journal of Accountancy. Following are some brief, but important excerpts from that article that may be of importance

to any number of you or someone that you may know. Credit for the article belongs to James Sullivan and Melissa Towell, both of whom are associated with Consumer Debt Counselors, Inc. There are many unforeseen and unexpected bumps in the road for signers and cosigners of student loans. 1. A loan will become immediately due should one of the parties die before a loan is fully paid. This means that a cosigner’s estate may become liable for the debt although another cosigner may still live. 2. There are two types of student loans. Federal Student Loans (FSLs) are issued directly to students by the federal government. Private student loans come from other sources. 3. FSL interest rates are either subsidized or are unsubsidized by the federal government. Subsidized loans to not accrue interest while the student is in school. Conversely, the unsubsidized loan begins to accrue interest with the first disbursement while the student is in school.
4. Repayment terms are not the same for the two types of loans. FSLs have more flexibility. 5. FSLs are based upon the student's financial need while private loans are based upon the borrower's credit rating. 6. FSL's typically have lower interest rates. 7. Keeping interest under control is important. Paying interest on private loans while the student is in school should be considered. 8. Don't borrow more than what is needed, if possible. Stagger the withdrawals, if possible. 9. The devil is in the details and overlooking the details can be very costly. 10. Plan the loan backward. Think ahead about the repayment. 11. Consider income-driven plans that are available through the U. S. Department of Education. All direct and FFEL student loans qualify. 12. Create a budget. 13. Make timely payments to keep credit scores high. 14. Seek assistance from financial counselors on campus, or others including your CPA.

Family Worship
T
Family worship helps children to understand they have nothing to fear from their heavenly Father’s hand. by Kara Marsh
hey say imitation is the purest form of flattery. Though I don’t desire flattery from my children, I do hope that they observe in me a growing faith, trust in the heavenly Father, and a longing to be more like Jesus. How can I begin to show them what God requires? We make daily worship a priority for our family. Over the past eight years (some consistent . . . some not so much), we’ve gathered to do family worship. Family worship is not only beneficial, it’s commanded in Scripture. Genesis 18:19 gives the principle: God saved Abraham, so he’d teach his family of Christ. Ephesians 6:4 states the precept: fathers are to lead spiritually. Proverbs 22:6 shows the pattern: training and teaching our children, because God’s Word always accomplishes God’s purposes in us. Finally, Deuteronomy 6:6-9 outlines the process: Scripture is to frame our lives. So what does that look like in our home? It’s messy, loud, funny, crazy, and at times weepy! But we try to have fun with our Scripture memory, Bible story, and sometimes off-key, forgetting-the-words singing. Here’s what we do. We include four basic components: memory, Scripture, singing, and prayer. 1. We memorize work−both Scripture and catechism. We follow our church's AWANA program, and a book called Truth and Grace (from founders.org) for most of our work. Every week or so, we change the memory verses or catechism questions. This portion is mostly rote memorization and is simply to hide those precious words and big truths in their hearts. There’s
20 // August 2017
not much explaining at this point, since our kids are still small−but periodically, a verse or catechism question raises a basic biblical teaching opportunity. 2. We read from Scripture itself, or a faithful Bible storybook. The Big Picture Story Bible (from crossway. org) is excellent for young children, and you can move from there to longer storybooks. We usually read one to two stories and talk through what happened and how to apply it to our lives. We take our children onto our laps whenever possible, and this is a very tender time of being together. 3. We sing. Although we can play instruments, we prefer singing a cappella. We want our children to know “Holy, Holy, Holy” and those rich, faithful, gospelsaturated hymns, but we also incorporate silly Bible tunes and choruses to keep them engaged. 4. The last component is prayer. It is so important to teach children to pray to a loving Father, habitually thanking Him for all that He is, and what He's done−learning to live and respond to Him under His providences. We want them to understand they have nothing to fear from their Father's hand: that “all things come to us not by chance, but by His fatherly hand.” We pray as a family, and then Daddy tucks them in and lays hands on them, praying over them as they drift off to sleep. As we’ve tried to be obedient to Scripture’s teaching, family worship has shaped our home and faith immeasurably−and it will do the same in yours. Kara Marsh is a local pastor's wife and a homeschool mommy. She enjoys learning, music, and photography and is currently working on getting her Biblical counseling certifications completed.

Court-Appointed Special Advocates for Foster Children
T
Murray/Whitfield CASA (Court-Appointed Special Advocates) is looking for more volunteer advocates. Are you our next champion for foster children? by Chelsea DeWaters
he CASA program is a place for people who truly want to serve their community. It's a place for those who believe deeply in their responsibility to take care of the least among us and who are looking for ways to give generously not only of their time and energy, but also of their hearts and minds, to protect the most vulnerable citizens of our towns: children who have had to leave their families because of abuse or neglect. Children in the foster care system are there because they were not safe in their own homes, and are therefore in need of the intervention of the community around them to become safe and to receive what they need to be healthy and to flourish. CASA volunteers believe it is their responsibility to step up and serve these little fellow citizens. The communities of Murray and Whitfield Counties are fortunate to have dedicated, compassionate, and valiant state agency workers to intervene on behalf of these children. Our

Department of Family and Children Services (DFCS) case managers, supervisors, and directors dedicate endless hours of difficult, heart-wrenching work to uphold our child-welfare system and keep our children safe. Not only that, they admirably pursue Georgia’s goal of ultimately bringing healing, resources, and restoration to families in the hopes that each of these children will have the best shot we can give them at going safely back to their own homes. It's a lofty goal, but one that respects the right of children to grow up with their own family of origin and to be relieved of the grief that comes with separation. When reunification is not possible for children, our DFCS staff work
26 // August 2017
tirelessly to find excellent new "forever families” for them through adoption. These goals are lofty indeed and our system is overburdened. In our two counties, we have over 350 children in foster care, and our state’s resources are always hard-pressed to meet the need. To provide the necessary county staff, foster parents, and professional resources to ensure that each child’s case has the attention, services, and care he or she deserves is a near Herculean task. So, CASA volunteers help. A “CASA” is a Court Appointed Special Advocate who serves our child welfare system as a volunteer. These members of the community sign up to provide free, ongoing, diligent support to each child they serve for the duration of that child's time in foster care. A CASA is appointed by juvenile court to a particular child or sibling group when the child first comes into foster care. They remain the Special Advocate for that case until the child is finally situated in a permanent home, whether biological or adoptive. They focus on only a few cases at a time and are able to give each tremendous energy, carefully monitoring each child’s situation during the twelve to eighteen months the child may spend in foster care, watching them closely to ensure that the child is receiving the utmost care and the best services we can give to encourage their best chance for a successful future. As the Special Advocate for the child, the CASA gets to know that child, develops a deep understanding of that child's individual needs, and forms clear, well-informed conclusions about what is in the best interest of that child. The CASA then makes recommendations to DFCS and to the juvenile court judge. Throughout the case, the CASA stands as both a support and friend for the child, and as a support and advisor for the juvenile court judge as he seeks to make incredibly difficult, life-changing decisions for each child and family.
Who is a CASA volunteer?
CASA volunteers come from all walks of life. They can have any educational background, any professional experience, and be any age (21 or above), gender, or race. They come to our program because they are looking for a way to help, and we provide the training necessary to equip them to do this work. New volunteers attend a weekly class for ten weeks, at the end of which, they are sworn in by the judge as Court Appointed Special Advocates of
the Conasauga Judicial Circuit. When they take their first case, they are assigned to a staff supervisor who supports and guides them through their work. They participate in ongoing in-service trainings, and consult regularly with their staff supervisor, always building a better working knowledge of the children and families they serve and of the day-to-day operations of the child-welfare system. All it takes to be an excellent CASA is a willingness to learn, diligence, attention to detail, and a passion for serving children in need.
Peter and Wendy Hanson, CASA Volunteers
Peter and Wendy Hanson called the program after Peter heard about CASA at one of his regular Kiwanis meetings. They came in for an interview, listened to the specifics of the work and training process, and decided to join in. They are dedicated to meeting needs in our community, and to standing up for those who need advocacy. Though not familiar with the childwelfare system, they took their training to heart, were sworn in last September, and have each now gone to work on their cases, providing energetic, strong advocacy in difficult situations and support and kindness for six children. “Being a CASA has been the most humbling, rewarding, emotional experience of my life,” says Marian Stranahan, who has been a CASA since 2014. Marian thought long and hard about becoming a CASA. She loves children, and she was, as she puts it, “looking for a purpose in life.” She was not sure if she was qualified, until staff convinced her that the training would give her all the preparation she needed. Marian has now served seventeen children and was the 2016 United Way Volunteer of the Year for Murray County! She has been the only consistent source

of support and encouragement during foster care for many of the children she has worked with, who are often forced to change placements during their time in care. Marian has walked with them, every step of the way, as a trusted confidant and friend. The Murray/Whitfield CASA program at Family Support Council is made up of five staff members and twenty-five volunteers. Our CASA volunteers are just citizens who heard the call and brought whatever they had to the offering, willing to do whatever they could to give foster children a better chance at happiness and safety. “I became a CASA because I felt that foster children had been dealt a tough hand and they needed all the help they could get. In the short time I have been doing this work, I have come to appreciate the dedication and love that foster parents have for the children in their care. It has also been a very rewarding experience for me to feel that I can contribute in some small way,” commented CASA Peter Hanson. Wendy Hanson described her reason for being a CASA like this: “Although I have volunteered in many community roles throughout my career, CASA has already become the most personally rewarding. Working one on one with a foster child, I feel like I can truly make a difference. Throughout my career in education, I frequently saw the effects of child abuse/neglect on the children I served as a school counselor. CASA is the perfect vehicle to speed the process toward permanency in their lives. My wish is for every foster child to have a CASA to advocate for him or her.”
Catherine Stratmann, CASA Volunteer (Left), with her staff supervisor, Diane Green (Right)
“I find it to be a privilege to see after the well-being of our precious children,” said Catherine Stratmann. She became a CASA in 2012, and earned the Whitfield County United Way Volunteer of the Year award in 2014. She has served more than twenty-eight children. Because of the willingness of these volunteers to learn and serve, they are able to make a difference every day by loving, supporting, and standing up for the children to whom they are appointed. They are the voice of children who have been overlooked, neglected, and hurt−a voice for what is possible for those children, a voice for what is excellent in those children, and a voice for what is best for those children. They are a daily example of what it means to love our neighbors and a daily inspiration for all of us to work harder at giving our lives to taking care of those around us. From Panic to Purpose
E
More than forty years ago God gave me His purpose for my calling. by Earl Brackin
very Thursday night, more than 500 college students packed the largest lecture hall at my university to hear a speaker talk about Jesus. There were two guys who played guitars and opened the meeting each week. Being a musician, I really wanted the opportunity to do that too. Walking back to my apartment after class, I was having a conversation with the Lord about my desire. I remember saying, “Lord, I don’t even know who to ask or who is in charge of the program.” Immediately I heard a gentle voice in my soul, Well, it’s My Bible Study. Why don’t you ask me? So with not much faith I asked, “Lord, I’d like to sing at the Bible study.” After walking a couple of blocks, I entered a building and ran into a guy I had met briefly at the study. The first thing out of his mouth was, “Hey, do you know anyone who could do music at the Bible study this summer?” At that moment, it was if time stood still. Was I dreaming? Is this really happening? I tried to control my excitement as I said, “Sure, what about me?” It turned out that he was in charge of the study for the summer and getting someone to do music was an answered prayer for him. At the least, it shortened his to-do list. The next Thursday I was in a classroom just off of the lecture hall. I had tuned up and had run through my songs. As I began to pray, I heard that gentle voice−not audible but in my soul. I want to hear my people sing to me. Excuse me? I thought.
36 // August 2017
Then again, ever so gently I heard, I want to hear My people sing to me. Now you need to understand that this was in the mid-1970s, and the practice of praise and worship that is so common today had not yet arrived (at least not in my area of the South). I began to remind God that I had wanted to sing my songs here and it had been His suggestion that I asked Him to open the doors. What would we sing? Who would know the words (personal computers and data projection had not yet been invented)? We didn’t even have overhead projectors. I was in full panic mode now just three minutes before I was to walk out onto the stage before 500 people. The easiest thing would have been to do the songs that I had planned. But how could I resist that gentle voice? When my friend announced my name, I felt as if God had just nominated me to be the biggest fool in East Alabama. I don’t remember the songs that I tried to lead. I do remember the confused look on all the faces as if thinking, Who is this guy and what is he doing? Now 40-plus years later, I cherish that encounter with God. It was the night that He gave me His purpose for my calling. To this day I never stand before a group to lead worship without hearing those words: I want to hear My people sing to me. Earl Brackin is the minister of worship at Church on the Hill in Dalton, GA. He and his wife Lisa have three children and four grandchildren. You can hear his music at earlbrackinmusic.com.

The Race of Life
I
Only you hold the key to change. Don’t let the race of life consume you. by Kevin Tankersley
have spent a majority of my life being overweight, and there were times that I just wanted to give up. I was never the popular kid, and many times I was teased for being the "Fat Kid." By the time I was in my twenties, I weighed over 300 pounds on two separate occasions and had a blood pressure of 220/112! What do you do when it seems that your life is over? A friend reminded me that God made our bodies to be His temple and by living life the way I was, I had defiled the temple much like what is mentioned in 1 Corinthians 3:17 (although a whole other concept to consider). I began watching what I ate and exercising. One exercise I took up was running. I started running by coincidence. One day I was walking and wondered if I could run to the next mailbox. That's all it took. I ran my first 5K in October 2010 and my first halfmarathon the following year. Fast forward to now and I am training for a marathon! The road to this marathon hasn’t been pretty by any means. In November 2016, I actually attempted it, but due to lack of training and poor eating, I was unable to complete the marathon. I actually attempted this marathon weighing 270 pounds, which really wasn’t too smart. Others would probably just give up on that goal−but not me. As soon as that obstacle was attempted, I began to wonder what I
40 // August 2017
needed to do. I have put in several miles since then and have lost more than sixty pounds. In the Gospels, we are reminded that Jesus bore a cross as He was led up to Calvary’s hill to be crucified. Although that road was tough and he probably wondered why He was put in that predicament, He was still reminded in His mind that He had a purpose in fulfilling God’s will. As people, we have to remember that whatever we do has a consequence (due to lack of training, I was unable to complete that 26.2 last year), but we must learn from our actions and move forward to the greater purpose. Due to that lack of training, I have focused on what has to be accomplished. Because of that, God has opened up an opportunity for me as a youth pastor of a church that I ran by one day, and the pastor recognized me. I give God the glory because not everyone can run. Many suffer with health issues, and they let them control their actions. People make excuses, and at one time I was that person. I woke up one day and decided that an excuse was a reason not to try. People can't believe I once weighed 342 pounds and do what I do now. Kevin Tankersley is a 29 year old youth pastor and fitness instructor. He enjoys running and spending time with his wife, Lisa, and little girl, Evelyn. He uses his experiences to help others along their journey.

e believe when people are equipped, motivated, and passionately engaged in living out their faith in Jesus Christ they have the potential to be world changers. Our mission is to bring people into a dynamic relationship with Jesus Christ—a relationship that empowers them to see how God can work through individual personalities, situations, and talents. Christ was an activist, he did not neglect the needs of the people as He brought His message. We strive to encourage everyone to look more like Christ by reaching outside of themselves to serve the needs of others—at home, at school, in communities, and across the world.
Christian Magazine
Writer Guidelines: Who: Our writers range from pastors,
professors, and professional writers to stay at home moms and dads, business professionals, and others who have a desire to reach out to people through words of encouragement.
What: We believe that it is important to laugh
together, praise each other, encourage one another, and to offer biblical advice. Articles can be directed toward everyone, or from woman to woman, or man to man. We love to share recipes and family traditions as well. We ask that articles be kept to a 500 word maximum. We’d love to hear from you!
Where: Please send submissions to articles.goodnews@gmail.com Why: Because God has not intended for us to
just survive. We believe that we are intended to reach out to love and encourage each other. God has brought each of us through tough times, blessed us, and made the “impossible” possible. Let’s, together, share the love of Jesus Christ.
