eople often remark that they’re looking for a new

A congregation’s evangelism may be cold, their structure unbiblical, their ministries misguided, their lives unholy, or their doctrine unclear – but let the pulpit be faithful to the Word, and things cannot stay that way very long. Preaching matters most. “Well,” comes the reply, “everyone says they ‘preach the Bible’, but what does that actually mean?” Now we’re getting somewhere! Modern sermons are political, ethical, pragmatic, socially-concerned, or patriotic; a specific Biblical text might be a starting point, but it isn’t the substance of such preaching. In other words, many say they “preach the Bible,” but few actually preach the Bible. Genuinely biblical preaching has at least 5 elements. 1. Exposition: the point of the passage is the point of the preaching. Preaching should be demonstrably tethered to Scripture, explaining a given text or subject in light of its biblical genre, historical context, original audience, and author’s intent. “What this means to me,” “How I feel about ____,” or “I think God is telling me ____” aren’t on the menu here.

When you find it, praise God for it, and give yourself to it (Deut 32:47)!

hink about football teams that have won the Super bowl—how did it happen? If you asked the players, they wouldn’t simply describe that one big game. They might describe off-season workouts during spring and summer, pre-season planning and countless meetings, studying plays and video tape, months of deliberate nutritional dieting and conditioning. All of that culminated with a Super Bowl championship. To understand how the goal was reached, you must connect all of the dots along the way. It’s the same with understanding how most millionaires became millionaires. Only a tiny percentage of millionaires gained their wealth overnight through a lottery ticket or inheritance windfall. On the contrary, the vast majority of millionaires in America today reached that status through a long process of deliberate choices daily, weekly, and monthly. As I’ve stated in previous columns, a “millionaire” isn’t somebody who earns a million dollars per year. Rather, it’s someone who has a net worth of at least one million dollars once their debts (liabilities) are subtracted. They are “worth” at least one million dollars. Let me tell you about a millionaire couple I know. This couple in their 40’s considers themselves very ordinary and even “middle class.” One is a teacher; the other is a mid-level manager. When they married, this couple was nearly broke. As newlyweds, they earned a combined annual net income of less than $26,000. But they immediately committed to a few simple principles as newlyweds: faithfully tithing ten percent of their income, saving a tenth of their income into their retirement accounts (401k, IRAs), and avoiding consumer debt like car payments and credit cards. This meant that they couldn’t always join their friends at fancy dinners or fancy vacations, although they

enjoyed these activities from time to time as their incomes grew over the years. They saved up to buy cars with cash, and these were always used cars, never new. They used debit cards instead of credit cards, and they used cash whenever possible for purchases. Furthermore, they chose a 15-year fixed rate mortgage for their home, even when they moved into larger, nicer homes twice over the years. Consequently, they quickly built equity in their homes, and their current home is nearly paid off at this point. All along the way, this couple saw themselves as “middle class.” They didn’t grow up in a wealthy household, and they aren’t flashy in their clothes or vehicles. No one would ever guess that today this couple is worth over one million dollars. Their journey to millionaire status in their 40’s was, in retrospect, very boring, very quiet, and almost inevitable. Yes, that’s the good news—people who make these same choices to live on less than they make, invest at least a tenth of their income in tax-deferred retirement plans (preferably the stock market which offers the greatest potential return), avoid debt as a general rule, and faithfully tithe to the Lord—becoming a millionaire is practically inevitable! If you connect these dots, millionaire status is the destination at the end of this journey. One more point, and a quick “reality check.” Did becoming millionaires change this couple in any way? Not at all. Their million dollars is in a combination of their retirement accounts and the equity in their properties. They don’t have a million dollars cash in an accessible account. They can’t suddenly buy a yacht or cruise around the world. But they will retire comfortably and likely be able to leave their children and grandchildren a sizable financial legacy. It didn’t just happen—step by step, choice by choice, they planned it. Now it’s your turn.

What’s Your Role? everal years ago, back in West Virginia, I was talking with a friend about his work; he was helping distribute food form the local food pantry. In the middle of the conversation he shared with me an event that took place that caused him to almost quit the pantry. He recounted that a young lady had come in with four children and was in need of some assistance. So, joyfully, the pantry put together several bags and boxes of groceries for this lady and her family. Going outside to place the food in the car for the lady, my friend ran into a young man in his 20’s (my friend was in his late 60’s at the time) who was setting in the front seat. The young man looked up with his headband on, while smoking a cigarette and playing a hand-held video game, and instructed my friend that he could put the groceries in the trunk. The idea of this young man being so lazy and self-absorbed that he wouldn’t even get out to help was almost more than my friend could bare. My friend politely set the box of groceries down and instructed the young man that if he wanted these groceries for his family he would need to get out and put them in the trunk himself. We live in a time when we hear things like gender neutral or gender assignment. We fail to see that the God-given roles of mankind are being lost in confusion and godless ideologies. What is the role for men today? What does God say that a man is to do and be for his family? For the sake of this article I will only focus on one role by which is the most important role of any man and father. We won’t get into the argumentative roles of protector and provider, but the most important role for man, is that we model our love of God and our dependency and worship of the Lord Jesus Christ. It is summed up the best in the book of Deuteronomy. Deuteronomy 10:12 says, “And now, Israel, what does the LORD your God require of you, but to fear the LORD your God, to walk in all His ways

and to love Him, to serve the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul.” When we serve God faithfully, protection and provision become the natural, normal side effects. We don’t have to struggle in obtaining these things; they come as byproducts of our relationship with God.
Let me share two scriptures, relating to a man and his children when they are raised in a house where men are not afraid to show their family that they love the Lord Jesus. Proverbs 14:26 says, “In the fear of the LORD is strong confidence: and his children shall have a place of refuge.” And Proverbs 20:7 says, “The just man walketh in his integrity: his children are blessed after him.” What example are we living before our children and families today? One in which we are too lazy to get out and help those helping us, or are we living before them our love and desire for the Lord Jesus Christ. I vote we love God large and out loud for all to see!

or most of us, it’s incredibly easy to eat and not pay much attention to portion control or calorie intake. We like to eat what we want and when we want it. Eating healthy does not have to be boring and it’s easier to make healthier choices than we actually realize. When we hear the word “healthy” we often immediately think “boring” or say “I don’t have the time” or “I don’t know how to cook healthy food.” You don’t have to spend crazy hours cooking. There are many fast and simple recipes; it’s just that you have to make the decision that you are going to do it and do some research, look for the recipes that will work around your taste buds and schedule. And for those of you who are seasoned in healthy eating, try these recipes; they are just what you have been looking for. Whether you are doing meal prep or cooking dinner for the family, whip up these quick and simple recipes. They won’t blow any nutrition plan or add a lot of excess carbs to your diet and they taste fantastic. While still making room for weight loss and calorie control, they will be a hit for the whole family while being healthy and fulfilling. The lighter ingredients won’t leave you unsatisfied, while sneaking in vegetables for the kids (or for yourself). The best part is they don’t require hours of clean up. You will be in and out of the kitchen in no time
Chicken Lasagna 5/6 med yellow squash 1 reduced fat cream cheese Bag of frozen spinach Minced garlic 1 Italian dressing packet Parmesan cheese 3 chicken breasts cooked and shredded Slice squash long and thin. Heat spinach with garlic and Italian seasoning. Once hot, mix in cream cheese and shredded chicken. In casserole dish, layer squash with chicken filling and top with Parmesan and bake at 350 for 45 min.

1/2 bag frozen pepper mix
1 med zucchini 1 egg white 1 cup of the frozen bag of onion, celery, Parsley mix Red pepper flakes Minced garlic 1 TBSP of dry Italian dressing mix Sauté onion mix, garlic, red pepper flakes. Shred zucchini then add to turkey and egg white and dry Italian dressing. Once onion mix cools, add to turkey mixture. You can put it all in loaf pan or in muffin tin. Cook at 400 about 18-20 min.

pick your own—fresh from your own garden. Planting your own garden doesn’t have to be complicated, but there are a few things to keep in mind. First, the size and location of your garden in relation to the sun is crucial to the success of what you’re growing. Second, the closer your garden is to your house the better the chances, and your ability, to water and care for it. Third, soil composition is important to understand because it will help determine what organic materials need to be added to provide nutrients for your produce. My suggestion would be to go to your local garden center and ask them what type of soil you need. Finally, pick out the produce you want to grow! Gardening can be fun just to get outside and play in the dirt, but it is most rewarding when you can grow something you enjoy eating! Benefits of Gardening The benefits of gardening go way past providing accessible and nutritious food for you and your family. Gardening is a great way to squeeze in some extra physical activity without realizing it. And with such activity comes a way to manage the daily stresses that life often throws our way, as well as allowing us to experience more improved sleep quality. Involving the younger family members to help with watering the garden and gathering up the produce may help with self-esteem and feelings of accomplishment—especially if it is used in the family meal that day! Not everyone has a green thumb, but there are plenty of hearty vegetables that you can grow that do not require your attention 24/7. With some planning and patience you could have yourself a garden that provides a variety of fruits and vegetables and a much needed break from the busyness of life. Awaken the Misfits eing a teenager is difficult. Teenagers have no filter and let it all out. They tear each other down and praise anything that has a screen. I had a hard time by making other things bigger than God. I focused on what people say. I cared about what people thought. I got so consumed in the world and what it viewed me as, and totally shut out what God said I was. As I let the world consume and then mold me. I would listen to what other people called me. I tried to fit in to stop of the negativity that was being shot at me, but it just made it worse. I would go home and tear myself down. I forgot the promise and the word of the Lord. It felt like years of torment. I felt alone. I had no father figure in my life and felt abandoned. I knew the Lord was with me, but I just picked up my chains and kept moving. I would try to fill the void that was missing inside of me. "That’s what's missing from me that is making me different!" I said to myself. On a quest I tried to find new friends and even tried finding a boyfriend to fill my empty soul. It felt like I tried everything but nothing worked. I gained friends, but then lost them because there was still something about me that was "odd". Then almost went through with a relationship with a guy but got turned down because I was so different. I became angry with God and asked him why he made me so different. Why me out of a million other people! Why did you curse me with such a strong dislike from the world? Why am I so different from every man on this Earth? Every man looked at me with disrespect it felt like. Struggling with all this confusion I went to a conference called “Men's Ramp.” I went with a small group of guys. While we were there I felt out of place, like I wasn’t meant to be there. I compared myself to

every man in there and titled myself. I knew I could never be "manly" out of all those guys after God. Then one moment later a man came over to me and spoke over me what God was telling him. He told me that
God was describing me to the man. He told me "Stop comparing yourself to all these men. I have called you to stand out among every man here. No matter what you think. You are the manliest man here. You will reach other people that these men cannot! You will lead a Movement of Misfits." If you’re reading this and you think you stick out too much to be called by God, stop there. You are unique. here I was, sitting on an airplane in route to California, a place I had never been to meet people I had never met. The captain came over the intercom and informed the passengers that due to storms in Dallas, TX, we were going to fly in a circle for a bit to wait it out, but we might have to refuel before the storm passed. Fast forward an hour or so and we landed in Abilene, TX. The plane was refueled but then there were engine issues that kept us on the tarmac for around four hours! You see, a month prior to this I was informed that my biological father had been diagnosed with stomach cancer and at that moment, I knew I had to go and visit him and his family. I wasn’t certain of his stance with Christ and knew that if he didn’t make it, I would always wonder, “What if I had gone and shared the gospel with him?” So I booked a flight and hotel room after clearing it with my office and was on my way. Being adopted and the process it entailed was such a whirlwind and it left me with a lot of unanswered questions growing up. My adoption was last minute, so I was 25 when I actually found my biological family. Back to the tarmac. Through our family group text, my sister said something along the lines of, “I just know there’s someone you’re supposed to talk to there.” She was right. While awaiting news on what the airline was going to do, a gentleman behind me asked about the

reason for my trip and inquired further. When I said I was going to meet my biological father due to his recent diagnosis, he was surprised by my transparency and then felt it safe to share that he was actually on his way home to see his dad for the last time because his health was failing. After chatting a little bit more, I expressed that I wanted to pray for him before we left. The airline ended up putting people in hotels for the night because we weren’t going to take off until the next day and the airport had closed by now. My new friend was having friends pick him up at the airport since he wasn’t too far from home. Before he left, I had the honor to pray for him, his father, and his family as a whole. He was why I was there during the delay. God’s use of our circumstances never ceases to amaze me. James 5:16 says, “Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed.” God uses each piece of our life for His glory and our good. We get to be instruments of His grace with how we move forward. Those moments aren’t just about our inconveniences, but how we love and serve others as a result. hree months into the pregnancy of her fourth child, Lisa Hamilton, who lived in Batam, Indonesia, went for her regular check-up. To her horror, she was told that her baby was diagnosed with fetal hydrops, a grave condition where water develops under the skin of a fetus. Lisa saw with her own eyes the thick layer of water under her baby’s skin from the ultrasound scan image. Her gynecologist notified her that her baby would very likely pass away in vitro as the water layer grew thicker and if it somehow survived, it would be deformed with severe abnormalities. Lisa broke down in tears when she was further told that nothing could be done medically for her baby to overcome this condition and be born “normal.” She went home that day devastated, wondering if that was God’s will for her to suffer the loss of her child. For a number of days, she could not do anything but grieve. Lisa then remembered the Miracle Service tract she took from the backseat of a taxi when she was in Singapore. She briskly pulled it out and asked her husband if she could attend the healing service and subsequently consult another doctor for a second opinion in Singapore. Her husband readily consented. At the Miracle Service, several Gospelighters prayed over her. As soon as one of them laid hand on her stomach, Lisa felt the power of God and gentle warmth flowing through her body. Other than healing for her baby, their prayer also included complete peace during her pregnancy. She left the service that night full of hope and peace. Two days later, she consulted another gynecologist. Lisa told her of the condition of her baby and she immediately started the ultrasound scan. However, after several minutes, her gynecologist just could not

find any symptoms of fetal hydrops. Lisa looked at the screen and was astonished that the thick water layer that she saw previously had miraculously vanished. Her gynecologist remarked that it was nothing short of a miracle as it would be impossible for such a condition to resolve by itself. Even though her gynecologist expressed a few concerns and recommended amniocentesis, Lisa and her husband decided against it. Throughout the rest of her pregnancy, Lisa had total peace of mind. On April 7, 2004, she delivered a healthy baby boy by the name of
Michael Christopher Hamilton. Hallelujah! The ultrasound shows Michael before with fetal hydrops and after God healed him. Matthew 19:26 says, “But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, ‘With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.’” And Luke 8:48 says, “And he said unto her, ‘Daughter, be of good comfort: thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace.’” Michael is an amazing child. You can clearly see God's hand upon him. He has a wonderful sense of humor and is very smart. He has brought so much love, joy, and laughter into their lives. ung cancer is the nation’s leading cancer killer, taking the lives of more people each year than breast, colon, and prostate cancers combined. It kills nearly 160,000 people in the U.S. each year. This is because lung cancer is not usually diagnosed until symptoms develop. But thankfully, early detection can save lives. Approximately 85 percent of lung cancer occurs in current or former cigarette smokers. However, the good news is that by receiving a low-dose computerized tomography (LDCT) scan annually, lung

Blessed are Those Who Find Wisdom hen you think of the word “wise,” what comes to mind? Smart? Old? Intelligent? Experienced? An Owl? I think that we all aspire to be wise, but what does that mean exactly? Does it mean that we should adhere to the many inspiring quotes found in movies such as, “Do or do not. There is no try,” (Yoda) or to what your fortune cookie read last night, “Today it’s up to you to create the peacefulness you long for?” What does the Bible say about wisdom? Jesus’s half-brother, James, wrote on the subject: “If you are wise and understand God’s ways, live a life of steady goodness so that only good deeds will pour forth. And if you don’t brag about the good you do, then you will be truly wise! But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure. It is also peace loving, gentle at all times, and willing to yield to others. It is full of mercy and good deeds. It shows no partiality and is always sincere. And those who are peacemakers will plant seeds of peace and reap a harvest of goodness” (James 3:13, 17-18). That sounds quite different from just being smart! The description of “wisdom that comes from heaven” reminds me of the way that love is described in 1 Corinthians 13 or the fruit of the Spirit in Galatians 5. How do we get that kind of wisdom? Is it only reserved for retired folks or people who have been Christians for over 20 years? Can you have that kind of wisdom today to help you to make good choices, be peace loving, gentle, put others first, be full of mercy, and always practicing good deeds? Let’s look back at King Solomon for the answer. One night, the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream and told him that He would grant him anything that his heart desired. Solomon could have easily asked

for wealth, fame, or anything else, but his answer was astounding. When he replied to the Lord, he praised Him and then said, “Give me an understanding mind so that I can govern your people well and know the difference between right and wrong. For who by himself is able to govern this great nation of yours?” (1 Kings 3:9). This answer greatly pleased the Lord so He gave it to him. Solomon wrote the majority of Proverbs and is still known as the wisest man who ever lived.
If you ask God for “an understanding mind to know the difference between right and wrong”, will He answer your prayer? Yes! “If you need wisdom – if you want to know what God wants you to do – ask him, and he will gladly tell you. He will not resent your asking” (James 1:5).

God, you are holy and powerful; nothing compares to you! Align my heart with yours and please help me to make wise choices that glorify your great name. Amen.
