God Is Still In Control

W

by Ashlee Abernathy

e are living in uncertain days, perhaps now more than ever before. It is hard to think about raising children in a world full of turmoil and unrest. My husband and I have two young boys, ages 7 and 2, and we often wonder if we are doing enough to teach our boys what they need to know to survive in such a time.

All children are exposed to so much on a daily basis, whether it be at school, on television, or in video games, just to name a few, and it can be hard for them to understand and decipher good from bad. Thankfully, we are equipped with the Word of God to help us train our children to walk in the way of Christ. Sometimes we forget we are actually not in control of any of it, but we have a Heavenly 18 // August 2020

Father who is. He is still on His throne, and He remains in control. God promises to always take care of His children. We know that our boys are ours only for a short time, and they are ultimately God’s children, but while we are on this earth, we must do our part to teach them to be Christlike. Proverbs 22:6 instructs us to “train up a child in the way he should go; and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” We can have hope for our children’s futures if we teach them to be followers of Christ. As parents, we are thankful for the time we have with our children, and we can have confidence that, with the help of the Lord, we can raise them to be Godfearing, Christian men and women, even though the world will be against them. After all, if God is for us, who can be against us? We all know that parenting is not always easy, but we can always cast our cares, frustrations, and uncertainties on Him because His yoke is easy and His burden is light. The good news is, in the midst of all the madness, we can find peace and rest in an unwavering Lord. Like the old song says, “… because He lives, I can face tomorrow; because He lives, all fear is gone.” What a wonderful, blessed assurance that is.

Gospel Light Tabernacle

I

by James and Wanda Whaley

n the early 1960s, Reverend A.L. Owenby, a minister who had pastored and evangelized in the Northwest Georgia area for several years,

had a vision. His vision was to create a place where Christians could worship God together and receive instructions for spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ. After much prayer and fasting, his vision became a reality. Gospel Light Tabernacle was established in 1965. Reverend Owenby pastored the church for 15 years, and during that time, several young men accepted the call to preach the Gospel and received instruction and guidance under Brother Owenby’s ministry. In 1980, James and Wanda Whaley, Brother Owenby’s son-in-law and daughter, accepted the pastoral position at Gospel Light, continuing to teach and preach the message of salvation, deliverance, and healing. Many other pastors in the area began their ministry at Gospel Light and now have established evangelistic and pastoral positions in their own churches. Gospel Light celebrated its 50th year in 2015. The preaching of the Gospel continues with the same sound doctrine and beliefs that you must be born again, baptized, sanctified, and filled with the Holy Spirit. The teachings, by-laws, and covenants are the same today as they were in the 1960s. We believe the Bible is still the infallible Word of God and that we should encourage and exhort one another through God’s Word as we continue to spread the Gospel. The vision is still the same: to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ, to stand for righteousness in the family and the community, and to reach as many people as we can through witnessing and

presenting the Word of God. We also plan to continue supporting two children’s homes, one in Guatemala and one in Powder Springs, Georgia, as well as our local outreach through our Servant’s Fund. Everyone is welcome to be a part of the family and experience God’s love at Gospel Light Tabernacle. Come and visit us. We also live-stream our services! Join in; you will be blessed.

Can you hear the gentleness and deep mourning as He gives His sonship to John: “Dear woman, look, here is your son” (John 19:26)? Even in the very worst of pain, Jesus turned to God, His Father, and asked for a different cup and then later asked from the cross, “Why have You forsaken Me?” Each journey of mourning is personal. In searching Scripture to see how Jesus mourned, the key is found in the picture of Jesus being in the midst of the horrible loneliness and pain, never denying His grief, yet turning to God in honesty and yielding to His Father.

Saying Good-Bye To Mom and Dad he was my first friend. He was my protector. They were both my heroes: my mom and my dad. There are not enough words in the English dictionary to put into words the love I have for these two people, the love that has carried me through even after they left this world. My dad left me about 25 years ago, and although I am the middle child out of five, I was still called “Daddy’s baby.” I was that one: the one who got away with everything. He treasured us all, but I was the one who could do no wrong in his eyes.

When Dad left us all those years ago, my love for my mom grew even stronger as I watched her raise my baby sister all alone, and she did it with pride! She stood her ground when my sister would get out of line, and she raised her right. After my sister married and left home, I think the tables began to turn then. I more or less became the mom, and she became the daughter. She went with my husband and daughter and me on every vacation, every trip to the store, and every restaurant. My mom became not just my friend but my best friend. Over the years, she was there for me when I got married. She held me when I cried because I thought I would never have a baby and rejoiced with me on the day we found out I was going to indeed have a baby! She was there the day I gave birth to my beautiful

28 // August 2020

baby girl. She was there when they flew my daughter to Atlanta when she was 12 months old, all the while praying that God would fix her heart. We rejoiced together the day my daughter’s heart came in and cried the same day for the family that lost a child. So tell me, how? How did the tables turn so fast? How? How did we go from being best friends and having the time of our lives to being caretaker and patient? How did it happen that the day came that she looked at my 17-year-old daughter who she was with every single day of her life and not know who she was? My tears fell down like rain that day. How did she start seeing people in the room that only she could see? Were they really there? I may never know. And how? How did she leave me that day: July 23, 2019, at 3:20 a.m.? How did this happen so fast? How do you go on without them? It’s an age-old question. How do we live without our parents? The day I walked out of that hospital, I felt like I was nobody. Who did I belong to now? I was nobody’s daughter, and I said as much. And then someone wrote me and said, “Yes, you are someone’s daughter! You are a child of the King!” These words rang so true to me after 10 months of trying my best to try to figure out who I was without them. Yes, I am a mom and a wife, but who was I without the people who knew me since day one? Well, we pray and we ask God to give us guidance and assurance that we will see them again one day. I’m not sure that I even know the answer still after all this time, but I have learned to take it one day at a time and let God lead me. So if you’re facing losing a parent today, just take a step back and remember the good days. Remember the fun places you went with them. Remember the long walks and talks that you had with them, and give God the glory for those days. About The Author

The Little Engine That Could… call her Choo Choo but, her real name is Susie. She is my daughter. This girl amazes me with everything she does, tries and experiences. She is not afraid. She is willing. She is able. She makes me laugh. I need more laughter. We all need more laughter. One thing she has jumped right into is hunting and fishing. She’s pretty good at both. As the 2020 Turkey season opened, our goal this season was for her to harvest her first mature Gobbler. Multiple early mornings were involved in this season and many situations were experienced. However, none were productive until… It was the morning of Friday, May 8, Susie shared the night before that she would give it one more try for a turkey. It was early, a clear quiet chilly morning for May. As we got to the hunting property darkness was all around us. We parked at the bottom of the hill to make an easy set-up about 50 yards near by hoping to intercept the gobblers as they flew down to meet the hens that regularly walked that way. Walking in the dark we had the pop-up blind, chairs, guns and calls in tow. At our location, set-up took just a few minutes and we were settled comfortably in the blind. About 45 minutes had passed when the morning birds started to chirp. The world was beginning to wake up when a loud resounding gobble rang out 75 yards behind us. Within a few minutes we had multiple more gobblers, young and old, joining in. Knowing they would eventually come this way, I kept quiet and did not call. Right a daylight I heard a cackle and fly down of a few hens that were near by in the woods. About 30 minutes had passed, I looked over at Susie and she was fast asleep in her chair bundled up in the extra camo coat. As I scanned through the blind opening, I saw a hen making her way from the woods behind us. Out of nowhere, there was one, two, three, four gobblers. All were trailing the hen while strutting along the way. I gently poked Susie who opened her eyes and I held up 4 with my fingers and pointed. She slowly sat up and reached for her 20-gauge turkey shotgun. She noticed which one was the biggest and shared with me the one she wanted to take. She took aim on the red, white and blue head and she slowly pulled the trigger. BOOM! She had hit it but it ran

32 // August 2020

right towards the blind. Knowing it was hit I whispered to reloaded. She quickly loaded another shotshell as the turkey stepped out from behind a brush pile that the blind was next to. She readjusted to her right, took aim and BOOM! Gobbler down. She squealed with excitement as hugs, high fives and fist bumps commenced. Stepping out of the blind, we walked over to this beautiful mature bird. We admired what God had created and thanked Him for what He had blessed us with. We

talked through how it all happened and how components of the hunt like faith, opportunity, not giving up, being alert, having someone looking out for you and remaining calm, relates to life. As was began the tagging process of the bird, we were amazed that she had harvested a 21.5lb, thick 11.25” beard, 1.0” spur Gobbler. What an incredible bird. I hugged her once more and whispered, “You will always be my Choo Choo. The little engine that could”. About The Author

Desire vs. Sacrifice verything starts in the mind: a thought or notion of how to obtain or achieve something greater than the current state. Whether it be financially, emotionally, mentally, or physically, everything begins in the infant stage of the thought process. Thoughts manifest over a duration of time, and for those thoughts to become tangible, DESIRE is awakened. I personally had a desire when I was 440 lb. to lose weight and become much healthier. My want/desire to lose the weight had all the ingredients it needed to begin my weight-loss journey. But there was one ingredient missing that I was not prepared for: SACRIFICE. This is the intangible that discourages most people who start a new journey to quit just a short time after they have started. That was me for many years because my mind had the desire to do something I’d never done, and it required a level of sacrifice that was not met in my heart. Sacrifice is a heart condition, and it requires daily action. Desire is a mental condition that is bred through multiple thoughts/ questions of what you want versus whether or not can you do it. Sacrifice does not go against desire; sacrifice will define your desire. I was 440 lb., and in 15 months, I lost 243 lb. My desire was to do the unexpected, and my sacrifice for the unexpected showcased my desire. My heart wanted to keep my old nutritional habits, but in order to fully achieve my desire, I had to let go of my wants and establish my new needs. The fight is real when it comes to keeping the desire you initiated in your mind. It is a daily, uphill battle, but Vince Lombardi said it best: “The harder you work, the hard it is for you to surrender.” People always say quitting isn’t an option when truthfully, it always is. But quitting is also a heart condition. Just like the story of the two wolves living inside of you, the one you feed is the one that will be dominant in your

34 // August 2020

everyday life. Will you feed the heart that always leans toward quitting? Or will you feed the heart that sacrifices for its desire to become tangible? Quitting is easy and fast, with no accountability for you. Sacrifice requires long and slow suffering for a cause that started with a personal desire and evolves into something much bigger than you. It instills a fire in you that will never cease and a legacy to pass on to your children. As I fought every day in my journey, I realized that I wasn’t just fighting for me. I was fighting for

others who did not have the tools I developed during my journey and who one day I would help. My faith in Jesus Christ is how I sustained my level of sacrifice: walking by faith and not by sight. Christ sacrificed Himself for all of us because God had a desire for His people. I did not know I would end up here; I just had faith that my daily sacrifices of habitual changes would lead me somewhere greater than I started. Remember, sacrifice does not go against desire; sacrifice will define your desire. About The Author

If You Are A Christian, Then… by Reagan Marsh

36 // August 2020

playlists, articles, opinions, etc., which add to, detract from, minimize, supplement, substitute, or set aside what He has said in His Word are actually “earthly, unspiritual, demonic” (James 3:13-18) pseudo-wisdom. They are genuinely false teachings about Him. “The world in its wisdom did not know him.” Jesus is “unto us wisdom from God…where is the scholar?” (1 Corinthians 1:18-31). 5. Your strength is in Christ alone. Jesus is no mere coping mechanism or “higher power.” Strength in Christ comes from Scripture’s assurance that God the Father has

placed all things under His feet (Ephesians 1:22; Hebrews 2:8), that He rules in perfect wisdom and unchallenged might, and that He is working all things by His perfect authority (Matthew 28:19) after the counsel of His will (Ephesians 1:11) for your good and His glory. Christians rest in His power, sufficient to subdue all things unto Himself (Philippians 3:21). Revising this merely exposes varying degrees of replacing Jesus with self-reliance. In our current cultural moment, many causes and claims compete for our attention, allegiance, and affections. May your life, Christian, be built on the firm foundation (Matthew 7:24-27; 1 Corinthians 3:11) of “the truth as it is in Jesus” (Ephesians 4:21). About The Author

1. Your identity is in Christ alone. Your race, gender, marital status, parental status, background, citizenship, heritage, family, opinions, convictions, experiences, strengths, sorrows, struggles, advantages, personality, or education are not the truest things about you. They have shaped you, but Jesus alone defines you. You no longer live; Christ lives in you (Galatians 2:20). The sovereign Creator has ordained redemption to function so comprehensively that if anyone is in Christ, he is an utterly new creation; old things are gone, and all is made new (2 Corinthians 5:17). You bear Christ’s name, possess Christ’s Spirit, are included in His covenant, and were adopted into His family. In the fullest sense imaginable, Jesus is your identity now. 2. Your life is in Christ alone. You contributed nothing to your salvation except the sin which made it necessary. You were defined by your sin, your hatred of God. You were God’s enemy and despised everything about Him to the core of your being. Your every sin demonstrated this (Romans 8:5-8). You brought nothing to the transaction but rebellion toward God, a ruined life, and spiritual death (Ephesians 2:1-3). By grace, you’re now a member of His Body, made to be His bride, and marked by His blood. (Ephesians 2:8-9). Jesus alone gave and sustains your life, both now and forever. 3. Your righteousness is in Christ alone. Your good works, great intentions, strenuous efforts, self-improvement, self-denial, and self-righteousness—so valuable in man’s eyes—are less than worthless before the eyes of Him to whom we will give an account (Hebrews 4:13). In fact, all you can do is worse than trash (Isaiah 64:6; Philippians 3:8). Your standing before God is based solely upon the righteousness of Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 1:30; 2 Corinthians 5:21) and nothing else—or it is not the righteousness God requires. Jesus alone possesses, fulfills, and presents this righteousness to you. 4. Your wisdom is in Christ alone. “All the treasures of wisdom and knowledge are hidden in him” (Colossians 2:2-3). Thus, any narratives, sources, perspectives, voices, articles, philosophies, analytical tools, books, podcasts,

Easy-Peasy Fruit Salad Recipe by Pam Wattenbarger

T

his is an easy, versatile fruit salad with a 10-minute prep time. The pudding mix will blend with the fruit juices to create a sweet, creamy base that enhances the flavor of the fruit. Naturally glutenfree, it’s the perfect recipe for summer when fresh fruits are in season. Don’t like strawberries or peaches? Substitute your favorite fruit instead. Good substitutions are blueberries, raspberries, or blackberries.

Ingredients • 4 peaches, peeled and cubed • 1 (16-ounce) container of strawberries, washed, stems removed, and sliced • 3 bananas, peeled and sliced

1. In a medium bowl, mix the peaches, strawberries, and bananas together gently. 2. Stir in the instant vanilla pudding mix until the fruit mixture is coated. 3. Refrigerate until serving. This is best made an hour in advance to allow the flavors to meld.

Hamilton Physician Group Offers Telehealth Services

amilton Physician Group (HPG) offer simple and secure telehealth visits through Doxy.me for established patients and new patients. Video and phone visits are available.

Dr. Megan Brown of Hamilton Physician Group-Catoosa Campus conducts a telehealth appointment with a patient.

Some of the common conditions that can be treated through telehealth visits include cough, cold, allergies, rashes, mild injuries, stomach virus, or COVID-19 concerns. “We’re glad to be able to offer this service to our patients,” says Holly Andrews, Director of Business Administration for HPG. Patients can easily start a telehealth visit with a mobile device or standard computer by going to the website provided by the practice. No specialized hardware or software are necessary. 44 // August 2020

Secure data transmission and patient privacy is a top priority. Doxy.me utilizes state-of-the-art security and encryption protocols. Telehealth visits are generally covered by insurance. A self-pay option is available as well. Payments can be made through the portal or by phone. If a patient has a blood pressure cuff, thermometer and/or a scale, it is helpful for a telehealth visit but not required. To schedule an appointment, patients should call any Hamilton Physician Group office. A representative will walk the patient through the process “Our patients have told us how much they appreciate this alternative to coming into the office for certain visits,” says Holly. “It is convenient and allows patients to receive healthcare from the safety of their own home.” Call any Hamilton Physician Group office to schedule your appointment. Go to HamiltonHealth.com/telehealth for contact information. Most health insurance plans are accepted. No insurance? Self-pay options are available.

Gò0dNews on Worship

Why Do We Worship?

he purpose of worship is to give God praise, glory, and honor; we worship Him out of reverence and respect because He is worthy of all the praise. Our spirits desire to be obedient and give our best. He made man in the likeness of His image. Genesis 1:26: “Then God said, ‘Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.’” God is a very important part of our universe. He made the waves come in and go out again upon the waters, the sunrise and sunset, the moon, and so much more. Psalm 107:29: “He calms the storm, so that its waves are still.” When it seems we go through a dry wilderness, or when the storms of life are raging, we simply must remember to put the waves all over His feet and let Him take the lead. He’s only a small call away. Whisper His name Jesus. Whisper His name Jesus. Whisper His name Jesus. And He will answer you if you only just believe. Just have faith and trust in the Lord. The Heavenly Father is looking for those who will worship Him in spirit and truth. According to the Word of God and the Gospel of salvation, our worship must come from our hearts as adoration for God. Christian worship involves praying, music, reading the Scriptures, and listening to various sorts of sermons. Worship must be distinguished by what we feel as the Spirit moves upon us.

46 // August 2020

A very important part of my life includes many of those listed above. I love to sing and listen to music every day. Music is a universal language. Sometimes, it doesn’t matter if the lyrics are in a language you can understand; in many cases, music in worship gives our hearts an awakening even without words. Above all this, we must remember not to leave out our heart-to-heart conversations with God. The Father and the Spirit should be honored as the Trinity: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Matthew 16:24: “Then Jesus said to His disciples, ‘If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.’” Follow the Lord’s guidance and He will always be right beside you. He will not leave you. Remember, give Him your praise and worship. You can step into a new day and rise above all the lonely times. We have the power because He will give courage and strength. You can overcome. Pray, read, and study daily. Put all your trust in the Lord. He loves you even in your darkest hour. About The Author

Is It Over Yet?

A

by Kaye Stein

s we recover from COVID-19 isolation, it’s very important that we don’t forget and neglect the things we learned from it: things like covering your

mouth when you cough or sneeze and washing your hands thoroughly and frequently. These new habits will help in the future with any viral or contagious disease that you may encounter. Also of importance is the family time that we renewed while being confined to our homes. We saw a tremendous change across our nation and an outpouring of love and concern for our neighbors. Our belief in mankind was renewed. But that wasn’t sustained. Another severely wrong decision and action set forth a chain reaction of riots and threats which were a test of our good faith, but do not be dismayed by those who seek to tear down. As Paul put it, keep the faith. Everything is temporary, time doesn’t stop, and we keep moving on. The only things that never change are God the Father and His love for us. Never grow weary, and pray without ceasing. Colossians 1:11: “We also pray that you will be strengthened with all his glorious power so you will have all the endurance and patience you need. May you be filled with joy.” Claim it and name it. Claim all of God’s promises! Identify and name the issues and concerns in your life that are coming between you and your walk with Christ. Once you name those issues, then you can start to peel them back and remove them from your life. Never give up, but seek strength from Christ who strengthens us. Stand firm in your faith, believing in the power of the one true King. Matthew 10:22: “And all nations will hate you because you are my followers. But everyone who endures to the end will be saved.” Let that sink into your soul, like sitting outside soaking in the sunshine. Raise your hands and praise the God of all creation! In times of great anguish and fear, seek your answers from God’s Word. He sees each person individually, hears

the media, who are only seeing part of the truth? Even more, why would you listen to someone who is biased or has their own personal issues and agenda? If you are having trouble discerning the truth in what you are hearing, then take a step back. Find your quiet place to think and pray before you respond. Find your trust in God! He knows your future! He alone answers prayers, no matter how big or small. Why? Because He created you! He loves you! And mostly, He wants a relationship with you!
