he world was swiftly eroding away and the stench of their sinfulness was permeating the very nostrils of God. The time had come for God to deal with the debauchery and deviancy of mankind. In doing so, what if he wiped everyone off the face of the earth, was his plan for the entire world to end? The Bible talks about “the other side of the flood” and the thought came to me that Noah and his wife, his three sons, and his three daughterin-laws, were the only ones that lived life on both sides of the flood. If you read the entire story of Noah, you will realize that he was no superhero. In looking down upon the sinful world, there was only one man that God deemed to recognize with his grace and that man was Noah. Genesis 6:8 says, “But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD” (KJV). This does not mean that he was without sin, but it does mean that he strived to live for his God. God likes “normal people” because he made a whole lot of “normal people.” We are not exactly sure how many years it took Noah to build that big boat, but it was possibly 100 to 120 years. He had his three sons around the age of 500 and the flood occurred when he was 600 years old. It is possible that Noah had begun to build on the ark before the boys were born and continued the process, maybe even with the help of his three sons. Noah was merely a “normal man” but he was given an extremely abnormal task. I wonder how many of us would stick to a task for over 100 years and see it to completion? Noah and Jesus were very similar in their human characteristics, though Noah was a sinner and Jesus was sinless. Noah offered the world a new beginning and of course Jesus was the new way and the new beginning. Noah built an ark of safety for anyone that would enter and Jesus is the ark of salvation for any person that is willing to trust in him. Noah was a builder; the Bible says that he built an ark and an altar. Jesus was a

6 // August 2018

builder; he built the church and died upon the altar of Mount Calvary. We need “normal” men and women that will go all in for the Lord Jesus Christ. The Lord may have made you “normal” but he may have plans for you to do the extraordinary and something beyond normal. Noah built that ark and he invested in his family. In the end, Noah and his entire immediate family entered into that ark and to me that was beyond ordinary or normal. God is making “normal” people everyday and in turn he is choosing “normal” people to perform “abnormal tasks”. If you are looking for someone to mimic, you may want to mimic “Normal Noah.”

ear God, How are you? My name is Malcolm. I am 9 years old. I’m doing good too. Well... Maybe not so good. You see I had I kind of got into trouble with my dad. He kind of told me to take the trash out and I kind of forgot because I was playing my game on my video. I was winning the race on my favorite game and I couldn’t stop. My dad didn’t like it when I said I would get to it later. Well, Dad told me that I should pray about my attitude. So he sent me to my room. When I got to my room, I thought about a few things when it comes to praying. I thought about how it can be a little scary. Do you really hear me? And am I doing this right? I didn’t think that I really knew how to pray. I have seen other people pray in church. It seems like it would be kind of scary to pray in front of all those people. My dad says that I don’t have to worry about all those people. He said that praying is just like sitting down and talking to my best friend at school. I can talk to my best friend it’s cool about everything. Dad said You are my best friend. He said that you are a friend that sticks closer then a brother. My brother is pretty cool. He’s a little older than me though. I am sometimes a little worried that you don’t hear me. Dad said that in the book of Jeremiah that it says it when we call on you that you will answer us and show us Great and

8 // August 2018

Mighty wonderful things that we can’t figure out for ourselves. That’s way too cool. My dad also said that in James it says someone who is following you with their whole heart would do a lot in prayer. So I know that you hear me because the Bible tells me so. I asked Mom about if I was doing it the right way. I have seen some people stand up, some people sit down like we do when we eat and some people lie on the floor and pray. I thought one person was asleep but they were really praying (Haha). Mom said that when we worship you we must worship you and pray with a true and honest heart. She said that it doesn’t really matter or make a difference if we are standing or sitting. Although she said a lot of times we close our eyes so that we can not worry about anything around us. We also bow our heads so that we can honor God. You know God, praying is like writing this letter. I feel like we are best friends. I think that I will keep writing as my prayer to you. Thank you for changing my heart. Thank you for loving me. Your friend, Malcolm

Gò0dNews for Men

My Son Jeremiah s a father, I am constantly faced with the challenge of how to raise my sons to be good men. In our current political climate, this is often met with stigma but alas, I want my sons to know who God wants them to be more than what culture demands they be. My eldest son is named Jeremiah. He doesn’t go by that name but it is the name he was given and for a specific reason. Jeremiah is my favorite prophet but not for the reasons you might think. It is because of this passage: “O LORD, you have deceived me, and I was deceived; you are stronger than I, and you have prevailed. I have become a laughingstock all the day; everyone mocks me. For whenever I speak, I cry out, I shout, ‘Violence and destruction!’ For the word of the LORD has become for me a reproach and derision all day long.” - Jeremiah 20: 8-9 (ESV) This is one of the most genuine conversations in scripture. Jeremiah opens up to God in ways we often fear to do. He exclaims that God is sending him into situations where he is being ridiculed and laughed at. He expresses that God is sending him to fail time and time again. Jeremiah’s mind is processing the world by his failure. His five senses tell him that his mission is futile and that his God is authoring his failure. But Jeremiah feels something more. He senses something deeper than what he sees, hears, and touches. “If I say, ‘I will not mention him, or speak any more in his name,’ there is in my heart as it were a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I am weary with holding it in, and I cannot.” – Jeremiah 20: 10 (ESV) Jeremiah knows, in his bones, that his task is

12 // August 2018

greater than his emotional response. He knows that it is a greater injustice to deny what he feels driving him than to suffer the failure and social ridicule he knows to come. This is why I named my son Jeremiah. I need my son to understand his name. I need him to know that he should always be honest with God about what he is feeling and is facing. I need him to feel a burning in his bones that eclipses those moments when he is faced with failure. I want him to know the unmistakable drive in his heart that his life is for a purpose. I want him to hear the call of his Creator through the noise of the social ridicule that he is destined to face.

Wait

ho loves to wait? We often find ourselves judging events in our life based on how long we wait. The doctor’s appointment was fine but I had to wait an hour to see the doctor or our meal was delicious but we had to wait 45 minutes to be seated. No one likes to wait. Disney has turned our inability to wait into a way to make money - fast pass anyone? Our time has become more valuable than our money. Wait has become a four-letter word in our society right up there with select curse words. But is waiting actually bad? I found over 60 references in scripture on waiting. God encourages waiting. He not only wants us to wait for Him, but He wants us to do it expectantly and with faith. That is not an easy thing to do. Scripture is full of stories of how long some people had to wait for God to fulfill his promises. Noah waited 125 years for the flood. Moses wandered in the wilderness for 40 years before God called him into service. Abraham didn’t become the Father of all Nations until he was over 100. And the list does go on! So, what happens when we find ourselves right in the middle of God’s waiting room? Are you waiting on healing that hasn’t come? Or are you waiting on the perfect spouse or job? Scripture encourages us to use this time to prepare ourselves for God’s action. Perhaps we have some spiritual maturing to do before He acts. We should use our time to focus on God’s word and filling our hearts with His promises that are in the Bible. Rest assured, God always keeps His promises and His timing is always perfect.

14 // August 2018

“Delay doesn’t mean denial,” Rick Warren often says. He also reminds us that there is a season of waiting between planting and harvesting and that season is growth. These times of growth happens when we dive into God’s word and spend time with Him in prayer. Rick also reminds us that while we are waiting, God is working. This is where we have to trust His perfect timing and plan. Apostle Paul states in Romans 8:25, “But if we hope for what we don't see, we eagerly wait for it with

perseverance.” So, what will you do while you wait for God? Don’t be tempted to lose hope and think that He has forgotten about you. Remember that waiting produces perseverance and character. Lean into Him during your time of waiting with expectancy, and prepare for a season of spiritual growth.

Zucchini Bread by Deanna Thompson

reads come in all kinds, shapes, and sizes. Whether it is a yeast bread or a batter bread (like zucchini bread), the main ingredient of the bread is the flour, which comes from wheat kernels. Wheat kernels can be stored for thousands of years if they are kept cool and dry, and they can remain dormant for many years in dry areas (like a desert) until the rains come. Once a wheat kernel comes in contact with water and warmth, however, the seed “dies” and changes its form to become a new plant. This new plant looks nothing like the seed it came from, just like a caterpillar looks nothing like the butterfly it becomes. Yet, the new plant will produce many seeds—perhaps hundreds or even thousands—that do look like the single seed from which the plant sprang forth. As Jesus said in John 12:24, “Unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it produces much grain.” If a wheat kernel is stored in a bucket, it will remain safe, but it will only remain the same one kernel; if the kernel “dies” by being planted, it will produce many seeds. Paralleling this, Jesus goes on to say in the next verse, “He who loves his life will lose it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life.” If we love our life so much that we want to keep it “safe” and comfortable, enjoying the sin life we were born into, we will lose our life for eternity. However, if we hate our lives in this world—not hating living but hating our lives in the sinful world we were born into, hating the sin we are prone to do, and hating being separated from God—then we will keep our lives for eternity. So, will you be the wheat kernel kept in the bucket, safe and comfortable, loving the world you are in but not changing the world for God and producing seeds for His Kingdom? Or will you be the wheat kernel thrown to the wet ground, hidden from the sun and from view for a time, to undergo a complete metamorphosis so that you can be all God created you to be and produce fruit for Him?

Gò0dNews for Parents

Are You Listening? ow many times have you said to your child, “Are you listening to me”? As I look at the word listen I thought, “What can we learn from the word itself to better communicate with our children?” Love: Children need to be loved unconditionally. We understand that kind of love because we are loved by God unconditionally. There is nothing we can do to make God love us more or nothing we can do to make Him love us less. Children need to know that kind of parental love. Invest: When you hear the word invest, do you think in terms of financial provisions for your child? That is certainly an important goal, but not the most important investment. Parents need to invest in spending time with their child. Children want to spend time with their parents and that is how they understand love. You need to invest in their physical, mental, emotional/social, and spiritual lives. In Luke 2:52, (AMP) we read, “And Jesus kept increasing in wisdom and in stature, and in favor with God and men.” He kept increasing, who were his teachers? His parents, Mary and Joseph, invested time with him. Support: It is important for parents to recognize the individual traits and personalities of their children. Often parents get caught up in what they want their children to do rather than recognizing the child’s interest. Just because a parent liked to play ball or play the trumpet does not mean their child will. Perhaps this is a time the parents need to listen to the children. Trust: In the world we live in today it seems harder to know who to trust. Children should always know they can trust their parents. We are assured by God that we can trust Him to meet our

20 // August 2018

needs. Parents need to assure their children with the same kind of trust. Engage: There are so many demands on everyone’s time it is easy to lose focus on priorities. We are so busy, we tend to overschedule our lives and the lives of our children. This leaves little time for family time. We should choose wisely the activities that children are allowed to do. Family time should be a priority for engagement with your children. Nurture: We read in Proverbs 22:6 (NIV), “Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.” One of parent’s greatest responsibilities is to nuture their children in the ways of the Lord. We are reminded in Psalm 127:3 “Children are a gift from God, they are his reward”. Parents are to provide for and nurture the gift God has given to them. When they do, their children will really listen to them. So the next time you find yourself saying. “Are you listening to me? Think of what you are really asking! Have you listened to yourself in providing for your child’s needs?

Life Is Like a Beach Ball by Sheila Bird

22 // August 2018

Joshua instructed his armies to destroy the entire city. They were only allowed to keep the things made from silver, gold, bronze, or iron for the treasury of the LORD’s house. But a man named Achan stole some of the forbidden things and hid them among his own belongings. God was so angry that He told Israel He would never defeat their enemies until they removed the stolen things from among them. When Joshua confronted Achan he had this to say, “Among the plunder I saw a beautiful robe from Babylon, 200 silver coins, and a bar of gold weighing more than a pound. I wanted them so much that I took them. They are hidden in the ground beneath my tent, with the silver buried deeper than the rest.” Joshua 7:21 (NLV) He wanted them so much he just took them without angst. Much like I took that beach ball. Only Achan and his family were stoned to death in order to purge Israel from the sin of disobedience. Because of Jesus, we don’t have to fear being stoned to death for our sins like Achan. But unconfessed sin will eventually result in a myriad of destructive consequences. It can yield death to relationships, health, finances and so much more. So beware my friend, life is like a beach ball. If you are bouncing around in the pleasures of sin, just when you least expect it, you may find yourself completely deflated in the bottom of a pool of regret. Even as a child I knew that the truth was the only thing that would set me free. The same applies to us today. The Bible tells us in I John 1:9 that if we confess our sins God will be faithful to forgive us. Not only that, He will clean up our deceitful heart and bring goodness back into our lives. If sin has sucked the air out of you, let Jesus breathe new life into your soul. Get your bounce back. Enjoy your freedom in the Son. “Therefore if the Son makes you free you are free indeed”! (NKJ)

A story of deflated enthusiasm and tears of regret each balls and summer time go hand in hand. Whether it’s the lake, the pool or the beach, visions of fun in the sun are not complete without one. I grew up in the Florida suburbs where every yard had a pool, a fence and yes, a beach ball. Every yard except for mine. Every day I was faced with the miserable fate of going out into my back yard and longing for someone else’s possessions. One day I decided that if I couldn’t have a pool of my own that at least I deserved a beach ball. For days I patiently calculated a way to make my neighbor’s ball my own. There was only one problem. Their pool was blockaded by a sprawling chain link fence that went far above my little six year old head. One day the wind blew that ball out of the pool and into the corner of the neighbor’s yard right up against the fence. I immediately put my pre-meditated plan into action. I slipped my tiny hand through the bottom hole in the fence underneath the ball. Then hand over hand I began to slowly lift the ball as high as I could reach. With one last effort, I stood on my tip toes, gave it a little pat and over the fence it came. I was absolutely delighted. I played with my newly acquired toy for hours without an ounce of remorse as to how it came into my possession. Unbeknownst to me the neighbors had watched my every move out their kitchen window. Then they called my parents to report their little neighborhood thief. My genius plan had backfired and the consequences were piling up painfully fast. As I recall this story with humor and a bit of embarrassment, it brings to mind a Bible story in the Old Testament about thievery and deception that had inconceivable consequences. The children of Israel had just marched around the walls of Israel seven times as the Lord commanded. With a shout the walls came tumbling down and God gave them the city.

If you’ve been exercising consistently, or dieting hard, and not seeing the results you want—hiring a trainer may be a good choice. A good trainer can teach you “tricks of the trade” that will help you get more out of each exercise you do, and advise you as to the best training and dietary strategies for your particular situation. 2. FEATURED COVER STORY

Greenwood Developers

A

s you round the corner onto Pleasant Grove drive from Orchard Way, you begin to sense that something is changing. A perfectly-proportioned fence borders the road, already accented with yellow daylilies and rows of hydrangeas that will become dramatic within a season or two. For now, there are also black silt fences defining the construction site, an array of men and machinery visible in the distance and a large sign that reads “construction entrance”. This is Orchard Place, Dalton’s newest housing development. It’s an elegant, gated community of 130 new condominiums about 11 minutes from Downtown Dalton. A home construction project of this size hasn’t been started in Dalton for years and, according to the developers, there’s never been a community like this one in the area. Hallmarks of the new development include a landscaped park - larger

26 // August 2018

than two football fields - that will form the center of the community. Mature trees, preserved from the original farmland, will form pockets of shade, with a walking trail, seating areas, and play areas rounding out the green space. Homes will line each side of the park. In another area of the community will be a pool and clubhouse pavilion, just in front of the pond with its decorative fountain. At Orchard Place, every condominium features a ‘master on main’ layout. Choices abound in floor plans and building type, though. Home sizes range from 2-bedroom to 4-bedroom. Most are built all on one level. Craftsman-style details create a sense of modern Southern style. Columned front porches will edge the park and the main street. Inside, open floor plans, paneled doors, and high end kitchens and baths are standard. Highly-customized upgrades are also available to buyers who purchase during the construction phase.

Upgrade packages include a pet package, as well as a tech package that includes items such as keyless entry, USB charging outlets and learning thermostats. The farmhouse package includes options for a farmhouse sink, interior barn doors and something truly unique! Barn wood or galvanized metal salvaged from the site’s homestead can be used to create a feature wall in the new homes. The builder’s suggest a fireplace surround or master suite accent wall. Orchard Place is located just a mile from Raisin Woods Mountain Bike Park and 2 miles from the 300acre Heritage Point Park with 10 softball fields, dog-park, disc golf, walking track, and playgrounds. The Rocky Face on-ramp to I-75 is 7 miles from the front gate of the new community. Homes at Orchard Place start at $164,900. Greenwood Developers, the firm behind the construction, is also currently building The Villas

at Nob North, a community of 18 single family homes in Highland Forest. These Craftsman-style homes feature masters on main, high end finishes and access to Highland Forest amenities. While a number of these homes have already been sold, a few lots remain. The builders try to keep a completed home available for those who have immediate move-in needs, but many new owners have chosen to participate in choosing their own finishes and upgrades to create a semicustom home. Homes at The Villas at Nob North start in the mid-$200,000s. Together, the Greenwood Development team has decades of experience in new construction and project management, economic development, design, and finance. They’re focused on creating a unique

sense of place in each neighborhood they develop. Greenwood Developers maintains regular office hours at Nob North, where interested parties can tour homes and browse floor plans for both Orchard Place and The Villas. Hours are Mondays and Wednesdays from 2:00 to 6:00 and Sundays from 2:00 to 4:00. Tours are also available anytime, by appointment. For additional information on either Orchard Place or The Villas at Nob North call 706-529-7000 or visit www.greenwooddevelopersllc.com. The company - and photographs from both developments - can also be found on Facebook.

ave you ever tarnished a relationship, or has someone tarnished you? I recently found myself being the one who was tarnished, but then I tarnished the relationship back, so I would not feel as bad. After this event occurred, I felt worse about myself. It makes us feel justified and that its ok for me to harm someone because they harmed me. I am not talking about anything that is physical, but emotional and how it changes our hearts. Our hearts are where our true treasure from God is placed. Every time we step into any situation, not just a difficult one, we must remember who we represent to the world as a Christian. We represent the most compassionate person who is the true Son of God. It is difficult sometimes to deal with a bully at school or a kid in your neighborhood, but as we show them the love of God, they do not have any ground to be mean to us, or us to them. If we intentionally go out of our way to burden someone, that is our mistake and we must repent and make good on the relationship. A story very similar happens in the book of Matthew. This story plays out in the Bible about a king who forgave a massive debt to a debtor. After this, the man went to someone who owed him much less then what the man had borrowed from the king. Notice how he is tarnishing a relationship because of

28 // August 2018

money and he was just restored for the same sin and did not show any mercy at all. So, the locals go and tell the king, which makes him furious and you will have to finish the story as it plays out in Matthew 19:23-35. The result was not good for the debtor who did not show mercy and grace. The Bible is full of stories where someone tarnished a relationship and Jesus forgave them. Peter, not once, but three times denied Christ. Yet Peter was forgiven, and became the one whom God had in mind to start His church, not a physical location but the church. You and I are what God saw the church being when He created it. Sometimes it gets messy with our friends and we must step back and ask, how would Jesus handle this? Jesus always forgives us and commanded that if we do not forgive someone of their trespasses against us, He will judge us accordingly. The bottom line I would like to share with you is very simple; we must forgive others and not keep a log of trespasses. Once someone is forgiven there is no reason to remember what the sin against you was. God is gracious and merciful to us, and we have done more wrong to Him than anyone could do to us.

Who is the Enemy? or we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places” (Ephesians 6:12, KJV). At some point, we have all been frustrated or angry with someone, whether it was a family member, a friend, or a stranger. There is a temptation to take out our frustrations on others when this happens. Is that the right thing to do? What is the proper response? The Apostle Paul wrote the letter to the Ephesians while he was in prison. He was not guilty of breaking any crime; he was arrested for telling others about Jesus. It would have been easy for him to have anger towards those that put him in jail. During this trial, he imparted to the Ephesians a powerful revelation. He shared that people (flesh and blood) are not our enemies! Our adversaries are the spiritual forces of darkness (see also Eph. 2:2, I Peter 5:8). Let’s take a moment to review what happened to Paul while he was in the city of Ephesus (Acts 19:23-41). In this city lived a silversmith named Demetrius. He made money making idols of the pagan goddesses Diana. As Paul preached, people were getting rid of their idols and giving their lives to Jesus. As would be expected, this caused a decline in the idol trade. Demetrius stirred up other worshipers of this goddess and made them angry at Paul. Eventually, an entire mob of people gathered to oppose him. In the middle of this commotion, we learn that “…the assembly was confused, and most of them did not know why they had come together” (Acts 19:32, NKJV).

30 // August 2018

Many of the people who opposed Paul did not even know why they were there. There was even confusion in the crowd. Why did this happen? They were being manipulated by powers and principalities to oppose Paul. God is not the author of confusion (I Cor. 14:33a). For another example, we can look at Peter. In Matthew 16:21, Jesus told the disciples that He was going to be arrested, killed, and raised back to life. Peter opposed this very thought and tried to convince him this would not happen. Jesus responded by saying, “Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men” (Matthew 16:23). Jesus recognized the power that spoke through Peter at that moment. In life, it is so tempting to take out our frustrations on other people because we can see them with our natural eyes. We must learn that our enemy is satan. He comes to steal, kill, and destroy (John 10:10). He is the deceiver (Rev. 12:9). When people mistreat or oppose you, learn to look at the spiritual forces behind the attack. It will transform your frustration into prayer and help you love others.

e as humans don’t like to wait. Have you ever got frustrated while waiting in the drive through? While riding beside the slow car in the left lane that refuses to move? While most of us are in a hurry, let’s face it – sometimes it feels as if God is in no hurry at all. God may seem slow, but He always has a plan, and a purpose for everything. The biggest problem we have is not having all the details of the situation we are facing at the time. My pastor says that God will show us the trailer, but not the entire movie (plan for our life). He says that if God would show us the entire movie, we would get scared and run away from His plan. It is easy to get discourage in the wait, but we must be careful to not let the enemy convince us that God is uncaring or mad at us. Discouragement hit Mary and Martha while they were waiting on Jesus to come and heal their brother Lazarus that had died. When Jesus arrived He heard the words, “If you had only been here..” Waiting has a tendency to bring out the true colors in people. Waiting builds patience in our lives. Patience in the small things builds continue patience in the big things. Sometimes we need to change our perspective on things. Waiting builds anticipation! We tend to appreciate things more if we wait for them. Waiting transforms your character. It tends to be the “sandpaper” that rubs off the rough

36 // August 2018

edges in our life, those areas we need the Holy Spirit’s guidance in. Waiting will build intimacy and a dependency on God. During those difficult times we need to develop our relationship with God, and it can also bring about some of the most intimate times in our walk with the Lord. God is just as interested in your journey, as much as He is your destination! We may not always understand, but the Good News is that we don’t have to wait alone, God is always with us in the wait!! What are you waiting on? A spouse? Healing? Financial breakthrough? Salvation for a loved one? Don’t lose heart! You’re not alone in the wait! Invite the Father to come along with you in your waiting journey, and He will celebrate with you upon reaching the destination! Psalm 62:1 in the Passion Translation says this, “ I stand silently to listen for the One I love, WAITING as long a it takes for the Lord to rescue me! For God alone has become my Savior!”

n today’s society, sports activities and working on weekends has made going to church when we feel like it the way to go. Others say it is easy to not go to church because we don’t fit in with people or nobody will miss us if we were gone. For every one reason we can think of to not go to church, there are five reasons we should go. The Bible refers to members of churches as brothers and sisters. Church is a gathering of people who want to commit to their spiritual walk with others rather than alone. The best part of attending is so we can find out our purpose. Jeremiah 29:11 tells us that the Lord has plans for us. As members get to know you they can offer encouragement into your plan. Being part of a church has many benefits to get great help when trying to figure out your place and where you fit. Another reason is so we can worship. We can worship anytime, anyplace. In our car, at work, or at home, but nothing is better than being with other worshipers and signing to the top of our lungs to God. After worship we can hear someone share the word so we can learn more about it. We don’t all study and read our Bible as we should. But hearing it helps us to understand and gain a different perspective of explanation. When we attend church we can find new friends that we can have for life. The Bible tells us that church members are the body of Christ.

38 // August 2018

When we make friends at church we are forever bound to them through our desire to follow Christ. We can all use some new friends that can relate to our everyday issues in life. When we become Christians, we are called into a relationship with God. 1 John 1:3 says that we enter a fellowship with God and other Christians. The New Testament never divides Christians into members and nonmembers. It simply asserts that everybody participates in their local assembly. In Acts 20:7, it shows the practice of the early church, “On the first day of the week, the disciples came together to break bread, and Paul preached to them.” For Christians everywhere, regular gathering needs to be a way of life. The one verse that tells us why we should go to church is Hebrews 10:25, “not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the day approaching.” Get in the habit of going to church on a regular basis. The good will always be better than the bad. God will present opportunities to you because of your faithfulness.

The God Who Sees by Dorothy Teague

40 // August 2018

About The Author

ow many times have we strayed off the path God has for us, tried to rush God’s timing, and took a BIG detour? We get tired of being in the “waiting room” and decide to take matters into our own hands. We arrogantly try to wrest control from God, thinking WE know better! When we engage in a detour, God is not pleased, but He understands. He understands “we are dust” (Psalm 103:14). He still loves us because we are His children. 1 Corinthians 13:11 says, we need to put away childish things when we are older and walk in our faith as God would have us to. God is omnipresent. He sees us where we are now, where we’ve been, and where we are going to be in the somedays of our life. As Genesis 16:13 states, “He is the God Who sees.” We are not the first to make the mistake of stepping out of God’s timing. Cue Abraham and Hagar, and, let’s not forget Sarai. They all played a part of trying to rush God’s plan of making Abraham the Father of many nations. They waited and waited for the child God had promised. Nothing happened, so they decided to put a plan of their own together. It was Sarai that suggested Abraham “go in and lie with her(Hagar),” so that they might have a child, since Sarai was barren. Abraham did not argue with her and Hagar became pregnant. Sarah got angry and jealous, and Hagar was sent off into the desert to fend for herself. Abraham was a man caught in the middle of a very bad plan, but aren’t our plans always flawed? Even though God wasn’t happy with their actions, He took pity on Hagar and told her she would have a son, Ishmael (which would become the Father of the Arab nation). Hagar said, “You are the God who sees.” Truer words could not be spoken. God sees our sin, but also sees our sorrow and pain. He sees our tears and keeps them all in a bottle (Psalm 56:8). God is present everywhere and at all times. There is no place where He is not. Jeremiah 23:24 says, “Can a man hide himself in secret places so that I can not see Him?” Psalm 139:7-10 asks “Where shall I flee from Your presence?” Job 34:21 states that “His eyes are on the ways of man and He sees all his steps.” Yes, God is the God Who sees us right where we are, with all our flaws and failures, stains and sorrows, and He loves us anyway. But, as my pastor, Dr. Tony Crisp says, “He loves us too much to leave us there” in the mess that we made of our lives by stepping out of His will. It’s then that He picks us up out of our mess and turns it into a message that we can tell others in order to glorify Him!

Diabetes Management f you or a loved one has been diagnosed with diabetes you are not alone. An estimated 30.3 million Americans have been diagnosed with the disease. Diabetes is a chronic condition in which your body does not produce enough insulin or does not utilize insulin properly. Insulin is a hormone made by the pancreas that regulates the amount of glucose in the body. Most people who have diabetes have type 2 diabetes. Only 10% have the less common form of diabetes known as type 1 diabetes. Regardless of the diabetes type you have, lifestyle change is a priority for successful management of the disease. Healthy meal planning and increased physical activity is essential in achieving optimal glucose control. Incorporating these changes can improve your overall health by reducing stress, decreasing weight, lowering blood pressure, and cholesterol levels. In addition to lifestyle changes, medication therapy may be required for effective diabetes management. However, this is not a quick fix. Choosing to neglect lifestyle measures may result in less effective diabetes control and may lead to other health conditions, or the worsening of existing complications. Establishing goals is a crucial step in achieving success with diabetes management. Goals should be individualized based on specific needs. Setting unattainable goals is a recipe for failure, therefore, it is imperative to set realistic attainable goals. Setting S.M.A.R.T. goals will effectively assist your efforts with goal achievement by managing time and tracking progress. S.M.A.R.T. goals are Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Time-specific. Specific: What exactly do you wish to achieve? Measurable: How can you track progress of your goal? Attainable: Is this goal possible to accomplish? Realistic: Is this goal important to you and your health? Time-specific: Set a specific time or deadline. When will you complete goal? Example using the S.M.A.R.T. method of goal achievement

may be: “I will walk for 20 minutes three times weekly on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays for one month. Posting written goals on the refrigerator, bathroom mirror, or calendar can often help. Barriers to your plan can arise but developing a strategy beforehand will help to prevent the abandonment of the goal. Anticipate these unforeseen occurrences by determining a secondary plan

such as: if it rains on the day I plan to walk outside, I will walk briskly for 20 minutes inside my home or walk in place for 20 minutes while watching TV. Empower yourself by learning more about diabetes and effective management. Take an active role in your healthcare and discuss issues with your provider. Your health is priceless. You can make a difference. Interested in learning more about how to control your diabetes? Call Hamilton Diabetes and Endocrinology Center at 706.272.6079 or visit HamiltonHealth.com/diabetes. Amazing Grace s believers, we all know the song "Amazing Grace". As we sing this song, the warmth of God's love touches our hearts and brings tears to our eyes. I have been thinking about my journey as a Christian. There has been much joy and peace, but also much sorrow and turbulence. How

did I make it for 40 years? Married, two children, and a mother-in-law to take care of. Then, came a divorce, years of court proceedings and raising two children alone. The children became adults and had their own families. Many problems accompanied them, and as a mother and an intercessor, I was up many nights burning the midnight oil for them. Battles do rage and I suffered tremendous hurt, but I kept praying.

50 // August 2018

Health and financial problems for me were not welcome, but they came, and God proved His faithfulness over and over again. With each problem, God's Amazing Grace led me through. The author of the song. Amazing Grace, was John Newton. He was a former slave trader. John was the child of a stern sea captain, who all but raised him on the sea. If my facts are straight, John was in the British army, although not by choice and he was extremely reckless. It is recorded, that on one of his voyages, a fierce storm nearly sank his ship. John prayed to God and his ship survived. He later became an Anglican priest and in 1772 he wrote the song Amazing Grace. When we call out to God in our storms, His Amazing Grace abounds. I believe sometimes, God must think "I hear Mary again, I better send the grace". When I read about the slave trading, beatings, and near death storms at sea, that John Newton went through, we can compare them to the storms in our own lives. The history of this song was such an encouragement to me. God is wonderful and full of grace and favor and always providing his loving kindness.
