It’s easy to get confused in the Biblical details of the universal battle between God and Satan (Revelation 12:7). But the basis of this war is very simple. God, the rightful Sovereign over all creation, rules from a throne of Selflessness (Philippians 2:5-11). Conversely, Satan, the usurper, attempts to rule from a throne of selfishness (Isaiah 14:12-14).

The battlefield for this war is our minds. Who will we worship? (Revelation 14:7; Revelation 13:4,8). Whose character is worthy to lead the universe? (Revelation 5:9).

The only offensive weapon God chooses to use in this war is truth (Ephesians 6:17). The cross of Jesus Christ answers all questions and removes all doubt as to the loving, selfless character of God (Philippians 2:5-11).

Satan attempts to use force to accomplish his warfare against God and His people. But while Satan can kill the body when God allows, force cannot contaminate the character (Matthew 10:28). Thus, Satan’s only ultimate weapon is deception (Revelation 12:9). To win a heart, Satan must take our eyes away from the cross and separate us from God’s Word (2 Thessalonians 2:9-10; John 17:17).

In this battle of truth against error for the minds of humanity, it makes sense that the very first lie Satan presented to humanity would have to be extremely powerful. Remember, in the Garden of Eden, Adam and Eve were spotless. They had no propensity toward nor desire for sin. Satan had to get them to both believe his lie and doubt God’s Word to the extent that they would take actions in direct defiance of the plain command of God.

What kind of a lie could possibly be so subtle and so devastating? Read the heart-breaking story in Genesis 3:1-7. Of all the falsehoods Satan could have presented to the first couple, he lied to Eve about the mystery of death (Genesis 3:4). Why?

Have you ever wondered why nearly every pagan religion contains at least some basis of ancestral worship and subsequent communication with the dead? Psalm 106 tells us that the Israelites apostatized and thought they were taking part in ancestral worship (Psalm 106:28). They did not realize that in their idolatrous practices, they were in reality sacrificing to demonic powers rather than dead family members (Psalm 106:36-37).

Satan lied about the mystery of death way back in Eden. He used it to deceive God’s people in the Old Testament. Is there any chance he might be trying to use it as a weapon to deceive God’s people today?

Pastor Shawn Boonstra, of the Voice of Prophecy media ministry (VOP.com), is presenting Serpentine Prophecy, beginning in Dalton on Thursday, April 21.

In this free, four-part series, he will examine these threads of deception regarding the mystery of death that have come down through the millennia, sometimes even through Christianity.
