There Are No Do-Overs, But... MONEY MATTERS

ecently I was chatting online with some teachers and parents, debating the question of who is responsible (or should be) for teaching kids about personal finance and basic life skills, including balancing a checkbook, making a monthly budget, etc. Some teachers in the discussion were understandably exasperated that a growing number of parents expected schools to teach these skills to their children, instead of the parents doing it at home. I fully agree that the primary responsibility of preparing kids for life—which includes money management near the top of the list—lies with parents first and foremost. Unfortunately, many parents are increasingly unable or unwilling to do this, so they ask (demand) that the schools offer personal finance courses. And I welcome that suggestion whole-heartedly. For one thing, some parents may know little to nothing about finances, and their own finances may be a disaster as a result. Secondly, parents may know a bit about opening a checking and savings account, but not know how to open a Roth IRA account or how to explain amortization on a home mortgage. Schools could offer a course (or a few courses—the more the merrier, in my opinion) as an option instead of trigonometry or calculus for students who are either not college-bound or whose planned college majors don’t require them to take classes about “math with no numbers” as I derisively like to refer to those Greek letter equations (yuck). For my money (pun intended), a course or two on personal finance and investing would better serve many middle school and high school students. Heck, make it mandatory! In the past several years, I’ve periodically taken a few minutes at the start of class to give crash courses to my

college students in compound interest, the importance of saving and investing when you’re young, why a Roth IRA is magical, and how “house hacking” by being a live-in landlord can start them on a quick path to wealth. I tie these lessons to various Scriptures, usually from Proverbs, since I truly believe wise financial management is an integral part of a Christian life. I often close by saying, “If only some teacher had taught me these lessons when I was a teenager . . . and now you have no excuse!” The truth is, there are no “do-overs.” But you can teach younger people whom you care about so that they can learn from your mistakes (or from financial ignorance in your youth). Moreover, you can commit to starting today making wiser choices, financially speaking. Speaking of “do-overs”, consider jotting a list of your most memorable money mistakes; doing this might inspire you to corner a youngster and teach them why you made a bad decision and how he or she can avoid doing the same. When I say money “mistakes,” I don’t mean not buying Amazon in the 1990’s. I’m talking about common blunders that many people make regularly—leasing a new car in order to look cool at a red light, paying the minimum balance every month on a high interest credit card, refusing to open bills and stuffing them in drawers hoping they will somehow pay themselves, eating out seven nights in a row instead of making a trip to the grocery store, swiping a debit card unsure if the purchase will clear because you haven’t balanced your checkbook all year (and being crushed with $30 “insufficient funds” fees several times per month as a result). These are lessons we can learn from, as well as teach the next generation. Whose job is it—the schools or the parents? Why not both?

The Ultimate Comforter ’ve recently been through a divorce. I’m glad to have your full attention, but it’s probably not exactly what you were thinking. It wasn’t mine. My husband and I have been married for 20 years; we’re not inprocess or even thinking about a divorce. When we hear of a divorce, counsel troubled couples, or read about different scenarios, it’s disheartening. We’ve learned through the years that the ultimate reasons divorce happens are because
covenants aren’t upheld, Scripture is disregarded and discarded, and selfishness takes root and divides. These things are always difficult to encounter, but when someone close to your heart goes through this pain, it hits you differently—you question everything you’ve been taught about love, life, freedom, guilt, shame, and self. Recently, I’ve seen it firsthand: up close and way too personal with people I love and care for deeply. When it’s over, there’s a calm and a fierce anger that rises within, yet more than those two emotions, there is sadness. No, sadness isn’t the right word: there are no words. The depth of disgust, confusion, and depression isn’t something one can explain with any clarity. But it’s personal—and deep within—and creates a chasm that’s hard to crawl out of if one isn’t careful. Will the two people survive? Yes. They’ll be okay. They’ll breathe in and out until they don’t have to tell themselves to breathe anymore. And there will be scars:

not the kind that reminds you to get back on your bike, or if you’d never baked you’d never get burned: not the kind that God gives to teach you something specific. These scars are on your fragile heart, and once in a while, you feel it squeeze and hold; you can’t catch a breath, you have a hard time getting out of bed and putting on clothes, and you walk into the day—what’s the word? Oh, yes. There it is: numb. The word is numb. The word that we don’t want to say because that means we may not have the full faith that we thought we had in our sovereign King. How can we be without feeling if we are in Christ? Can’t we just pray and it’s all better now? Why doesn’t it work that way? To begin, feeling numb doesn’t necessarily mean you don’t know God. It’s a natural response to a very painful situation. Praying certainly helps, but the numbness is primarily a means of grieving and coping as best you know how. It may reveal points of not depending on the Lord, or it may simply reveal that you are human, you’re hurting, and you’re ultimately longing for your true home and the Christ who will wipe away every tear (Revelation 21:4). Until then, we learn to depend on His Word. He gives “great and precious promises to us” (2 Peter 1:4) in it: “my grace is sufficient for you” (2 Corinthians 12:9); “the Lord is near to the broken-hearted” (Psalm 34:18); “underneath are the everlasting arms” (Deuteronomy 33:27); “the covenant is ordered in all things, and sure” (2 Samuel 23:5); “we walk by faith, not by sight” (2 Corinthians 5:7); “God is greater than our hearts” (1 John 3:20); and “if are faithless, he remains faithful, for he cannot disown himself” (2 Timothy 2:13). All of God’s Word brings comfort and healing in His time to His people. Knowing that God is sovereign over every situation brings hope (Ephesians 1:11). Knowing He will keep me, He will hold me fast, is such encouragement that when we feel we cannot continue putting one foot in front of the other, we can fill our lungs and sing to the One who knows all our despair and is our ultimate Comforter (John 14:16). Would that new job really make you more contented, or would it add unwanted burdens to the burdens you already have? Would that new house or car really add to your joy, or would it rob you of time with your family due to having to work more? The next time you feel as if you are becoming discontented, that you are falling into the trap of “more means better,” and you want to chase after something, just remember the little girl who said she was happy because she

R
ight now, 217 of our local children are living in foster care. When a child comes into foster care it is because the Juvenile Court Judge has made a determination that the child was a victim of abuse or neglect, and was so unsafe in their home that there was no choice but to take them away from their own family. This is a huge loss for the child. Beyond that, the judge made the determination that there was no one else available to take over their care, so they had to come under the care of the state. This, for a child, is often a very frightening turn of events. At this point, the government of Georgia effectively becomes the temporary parent to that child. Our government, however, was not designed to be a mom. The former Juvenile Court Judge, The Honorable Connie Blaylock, used to put it simply, “foster care is not a good parent.” That isn’t to undervalue the compassionate, tireless, finely tuned, high quality service work done by foster parents, DFCS case managers, therapists, court personnel and other professionals working within our local child welfare system, but it is to say that the goal of our system is not to be anybody’s long-term parent.
When a child comes into the custody of the state of Georgia for his or her own safety. The goal of our system is to try to find a way for that child to go home. We want to explore every opportunity for that family, who could be struggling under any number of devastating burdens or trauma, to find healing and to be able to be back together again. The parents are given a set of goals and a window of time to work, with the support of many providers, towards changing their home from an unsafe place to a safe place, so that the child can come home. During this period of time, the child remains in foster care, in limbo, uncertain of the

future. It’s for this time that a CASA volunteer comes in to help. “CASA” stands for Court Appointed Special Advocate. A CASA is appointed to the child by the Judge, to be the child’s advocate throughout his or her entire journey through foster care. These 217 local kids in foster care are from and part of this community. They are not the state’s kids; they are our kids. CASA volunteers feel that deeply and personally. This window of time that our kids are in foster care is an opportunity that we, as their community, have to step in, at a particularly tough, scary moment to let them know, “We believe in you, we are here for you, you have a place with us, we expect great things from you, and we are here to fight for you.” It’s an opportunity for us, as their village, to tell our children that they are strong, capable, worthy, and loved. That is an extraordinary opportunity for our community to be able to participate in, and it is one CASA volunteers are capitalizing on when they go through a training and learn how to do this work. Most of our volunteers do not have any kind of background in social work. We provide intensive training, and we have staff who work with each volunteer individually to support them every step of the way through their cases. Who’s In Control?

hat areas of your life do you have control over? Be specific.” This was one of the questions asked in a step study
class for Celebrate Recovery that I was attending. It is a very good question. Many of us would casually answer, “Yes, I have control over my life, my attitude, and maybe my family.” But as I thought about that question more, I asked myself, “Do I really have control over anything in my life?”
of control from a new perspective. Do we really need faith and trust in God when all is well in our world? My trust in God grew more after I had been unemployed for 30 months. It continues to grow as my COVID isolation leads me to listen for His words to speak direction and purpose. Perhaps you are in a similar situation where your world seems to be turned upside down. These words from Proverbs 3:5-6 have helped me through this season of losses:
We have all heard the stories of people who have had their world turned upside down by a tragic event such as a divorce, job loss, the death of a close friend or family member, auto accident, or cancer diagnosis. These events can change our lives in a moment, making us feel that our lives are spinning “out of control.” However, the question remains: “Did we really have control in the first place?” Later in the study, we were asked, “What have you been able to turn over to God?” Again, I answered honestly that I was able to turn over my finances, my job, and my ministry. At the time, I thought my finances, my job, and even my ministry were secure. I had a good job, was not in debt, was serving at my church, and was a leader at Celebrate Recovery. Then slowly, over the last four years, all my security fell away. In February 2017, I developed a chronic pain issue that limited my normal activities. In June 2018, I lost my job because our department was closing. Despite all my losses, I was still active with Celebrate Recovery and my church, but then COVID-19 stopped all my ministry opportunities. My world turned upside down until every part of me that I thought I controlled was gone.
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek His will in all you do and He will show you which path to take.” Although my circumstances have not changed, my perspective has changed. I know that trusting in God means relying on Him completely. I can now answer the question with better clarity. “Who is in control?” God is and always has been in control, and I trust Him with every aspect of my life, even when I do not understand in which direction it is going. How about you?

Colored Deviled Eggs by Mary Anderson Beard

amily dinners are my absolute favorite thing to plan at the holidays. Since we are

sunday and don’t have a lot of extra time cooking, we love to serve lots of salads and pretty spring time dishes, including pastel deviled eggs! With this month being Easter month, I wanted to share a cute recipe that we look forward to every year for our family dinner.
1. Boil eggs (I bring mine to a boil for 5 minutes and then turn off the heat and let them sit in the hot water for about 20 minutes--or til I remember them sitting there LOL). 2. Cool eggs; cut in ½ and separate yolks and whites (just like you normally do for deviled eggs). 3. Make as many colors as you would like (I usually do about 4-5) drop food coloring in cups filled with water and place egg white halves in desired colored water. When making colored Easter eggs, you would normally add vinegar to make the color more intense but for this recipe you won’t want to do that. You will just let the egg white haves sit in the colored water about 30 minutes, so make sure you have enough water in each cup so that you can color all the egg white halves at the same time. Otherwise this could take you a LONG time. 4. After the eggs have reached the desired consistency, take them out of the water and just place them on a paper towel lined plate to dry a little. 5. Mash and mix egg yolks, add desired amount of mayonnaise and if you want to add mustard and relish. Salt and pepper to taste.

Hand Me Downs gave my daughter a wedding gift that I had been working on for over 12 years. I gave her my words written in the margins of a Bible. In those margins were my observations and applications of God’s Word to everyday life. In that Bible are Holy Scriptures and personal prayers. That Bible was an important hand me down. Hand me downs are items passed along from one person to another. Hand me downs can be anything from clothing items to automobiles. They can come from parents to children or can be exchanges made between friends.
Whatever they are and whoever they move between, it’s always nice when someone is mindful about something that may be helpful. The Book of Proverbs is 31 chapters of hand me downs. The first 30 chapters are the wisdom of a father passed along to his son. The final chapter is the voice of a mother doing the same. The Bible’s Proverbs are the words of wisdom we should hand down to our children. Here are some words of wisdom from the Book of Proverbs that parents should hand down to their children. Relationship with God Some people say that their relationship with the Lord is private. That’s unfortunate if you are a parent. Your children should be privy to your relationship with God. They should see your spiritual habit. They should have the opportunity to hear and watch you pray. You should openly share with your children what you are learning about the Lord.

Respect for Authority As a parent, your authority doesn’t come because you are bigger, older, your opinion is better, or “that’s just the way it is.” As a parent, you should not teach your children that their ultimate aim is to please you. You are aiming them to please God (Prov. 3:5-8). Respect comes from learning responsibility, reward, and consequence (Prov. 23:13, 28:13). Steward Your Stuff As parents, we make a big mistake when we become the deep well of our children’s wants; their bedrooms and our driveways filled with fabulous prizes. It’s as if tricycles, bicycles, and cars are rites of passage rather than responsibilities. As a parent, there is a joy in buying things for our children, but we cannot neglect to strategically teach the wisdom of work, save, and spend (Prov. 6:6-11). Buying on demand is a quick way to put your children into poverty. If you want them to be financially wise, teach them how to work (not an allowance), save, and spend. Sex and Self-Control As a Christian parent, an important message is that sex outside of marriage is wrong, but it is vital that we also teach that sex within marriage is right and rewarding (Prov. 5:1-23). Model masculinity and femininity. Long before you ever have “the talk(s)” with your teens or preteen, you should be teaching self-denial and steering them away from our depraved desire of constant self-gratification. Your words and your wisdom are substantial hand me downs. Read the Book of Proverbs and glean from God’s Word these ongoing conversations we are to have with our kids. have been so blessed! I’ve had some great men and
