Our battles should be fought on our knees and they should be fought with praise to God. David knew well that Saul was out to kill him, but that did not stop him from exalting God when he wrote Psalms 34, 57, and 59. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego faced certain death in a fiery furnace, but they continued to exalt God’s name and trusted Him for their deliverance. Paul and Silas’ feet were in chains, yet they offered up praise to God in song and in prayer while in jail.

Know Your Risk (Tolerance) MONEY MATTERS

WITH DR. ANDREW LEE Dr. Andrew Lee is professor of English at Lee University. He also serves as a coordinator for Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University. He and his wife Esmerelda have three children.

S

o, let’s pretend you’re a regular reader of my columns for the past few years. You’ve educated yourself about the necessary steps to prepare to invest in order to grow your money for future needs or wants—maybe retirement, maybe funding your kids’ college education, maybe taking care of an aging relative or enjoying that “dream vacation” or other “bucket list” item. In order to realize these dreams, you must first start with one simple task—learn to live on less money than you earn. It’s very simple, but not necessarily easy—there’s a difference! The concept is very simple indeed—however much money you or your household earn every month, be sure you have some money left over after paying bills every month so you can save and invest. That may mean cutting out unnecessary expenses in order to have money left over each month, or it may mean taking on extra jobs to earn more income, or a combination of both. Ok, now what? How do you decide where to invest your money so it can grow over time to meet your goals and plans? Your employer’s retirement plan like a 401(k) or 403(b) is a great place to start since the money comes directly out of your paycheck before taxes are deducted, saving you from a higher tax bill year after year. Those without a retirement plan at work should open a Roth IRA account for themselves. But this still doesn’t address the issue of where or how to invest your money. Both the retirement plan at your job as well as the Roth IRA offer numerous choices for investing your money—stock mutual funds? Bond mutual funds? Money market accounts? Real estate investment trusts? Large or small stocks? U.S. or foreign stocks and bonds?

10 // April 2019

Before making these decisions, it’s important to be honest with yourself about your own “risk tolerance”— how much risk can you tolerate personally with your investments? Are you a Nervous Nelly who would probably sell your investments in a panic anytime the stock market takes a nosedive? Or could you remain calm for several years and “let it ride” even if the market kept moving lower? The answers to these questions should help you determine how much of your investments should be in stocks or stock mutual funds, how much in bonds, how much in money markets or bank certificates of deposit, etc. Here’s my recommendation: go to this website www. talkingrealmoney.com and you’ll see a box which says “Take Our Free RisQuiz.” Click it and take the “risk quiz.” Be honest as you answer the questions, and you’ll get a clearer picture of your own personal tolerance for taking risks with your money when investing. Those who score extremely “low” on the Risk Quiz will realize they are unable to tolerate much risk or fluctuations in the stock market as it might zip wildly up and down. They might need to stick to more conservative investments like bonds and CD’s in order to avoid selling in a panic when the stock market is down. On the other hand, a high score (with 100 being the highest possible score) might indicate that one is comfortable with investing in stock mutual funds and will not sell in a panic when the market drops. By knowing yourself and your risk tolerance, you’ll be able to make wiser financial decisions. As one of the lines in Shakespeare’s Hamlet reminds us, “To thine own self be true . . .”

aster and eggs. Over the centuries, these two entities have had more in common than just the initial letter E. Children dye eggs, hunt for eggs, and eat chocolate eggs at Easter.

Yet, there is a deeper similarity between the egg and Resurrection Sunday, as some prefer to call Easter. An egg represents the hope of a new life. The shell is encasing a life—exactly what it will look like we may not know—and, given enough incubation time, that life will break through the shell and truly begin living. It was alive before, with a beating heart and moving limbs, but when it breaks through the shell, life will happen on a whole new level. Jesus lived on this earth as a human, experiencing the joy, the sorrow, and the pain. But when He broke through the barrier of death, defeating it (1 Corinthians 15:54), He experienced life in a whole new dimension. And because He lives, we also can live (John 14:19). That is our hope. That is the hope for the sinner who, going through the motions of life, one day finds Jesus and breaks through the shell of sin to truly begin living as God designed him or her to live. That is the hope for the Christian who, prayerfully living life and seeking to keep step with the Spirit (Galatians 5:25), still yearns for the day “this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality” (1 Corinthians 15:53)—when we will break through the physical barrier and truly live with the Lord forever (1 Thessalonians 4:17). So this Easter, when eggs in all

different sizes, colors, and consistencies are being sold all around you, remember that they stand for hope: hope for you, hope for me, and hope for all humanity.

Will You Read Me A Book? ow many times has your child said, “Read me a book!” and your reply been, “Not right now; we will later”? However, most of the time, that “later” never happens. Emilie Buchwald wrote, “Children are made readers on the laps of their parents.” It reminds me of Proverbs 22:6: “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.” Teaching children the love of reading is something that will enhance their entire lives.

There are many studies which show that reading to preschoolers gives them an advantage as learners later on in their lives. Listed below are some of those advantages. Reading helps your child: • Develop language skills. Even though you talk to your children every day, the vocabulary you use is often limited and repetitive. When you read a book, you are exposing your child to different vocabularies on different topics. The more words they know, the better off they will be. • Enhance their concentration. You may think that it is useless to read to your toddler who always wants to turn the pages, swap out books, or even throw them around. However, reading to your child consistently

20 // April 2019

helps them learn to concentrate and sit still for longer periods of time. • Acquire a thirst for knowledge. Reading often leads to questions about the books and the information in the books. It gives you an opportunity to talk about what is happening in the story and use it as a learning experience. • Acquire a wide range of topics to learn about. There are informative books on animals, places, objects, and people. There are also books that teach about life skills such as sharing, being kind, and diversity. • Develop their imagination and creativity. It is fun as you read to your child to watch their imagination growing. They can become engaged in the book by imagining what the characters are doing. They can begin to see the setting of the book as reality. It is amazing to see how they enjoy waiting to see what happens on the next page or have them guess what might happen next. • Develop empathy. When a child can put themselves into the story, it helps them identify with the characters and relate to what they are feeling. It helps them to begin to understand and relate to the emotions of others. • Develop a love for books. In our world of technology these days, it is difficult not to get caught in all the hype of TV, smartphones, and iPads. Taking time to read with your child and explore books will likely encourage them to choose a book over other activities when they are bored. • Create a bond with you. What is better than cuddling up with your child and reading a book? Spending time together reading and talking is a reward in itself!

The famous (or infamous) Roe v. Wade decision in 1973 that made abortion legal nationwide was not the only abortion decision made that fateful day. Another decision, Doe v. Bolton, gave incredible latitude to women and abortion providers. That ruling stated if the “health” of the mother is at stake, abortion can be deemed “necessary” at any gestational age. Here’s the kicker: “health” was defined as “all factors—physical, emotional, psychological, familial, and the woman’s age—relevant to the well-being of the patient.” Talk about a law that allows for ambiguity and manipulation—there it is! The New York legislation did away with previous protections there and allowed for unhindered continuation of the

The stress response and mildly vigorous exercise have an amazingly similar reaction within your body. Both cause your heart rate, blood pressure, and breathing rate to go up. The sugar level in your blood increases for added fuel, and the digestive process is suppressed, since that is not a priority in crisis or physical exertion. Exercise, though a generally positive activity, is physiologically quite a stressor to the body. The key is, when you exercise, you are training your body to handle stress more calmly (less drastically) and cycle back quickly and easily to normal from a stressful situation. Your body becomes more conditioned to handle your world. Other Ways Exercise Helps So, how important is exercise when it comes to stress management, and why is it so important in helping to manage your stress? Here are three good reasons: 1. Exercise is a main cause for the production of endorphins, your brain’s feel-good chemicals. All types of

life throws at us. 3. Exercise can improve your mood. It can increase your self-confidence and lower your symptoms of stress, depression, and anxiety. Carson Smith, assistant professor in the department of kinesiology at the University of Maryland, found that those who exercise regularly not only lower their symptoms of anxiety but maintain lower anxiety levels overall. And Kenneth Cooper, the “Father of Aerobics,” says, “Exercise isn’t just for the physically unfit. It’s for the mentally unfit, too. I can recommend it for anyone who’s depressed. If exercise benefits the body, it can do wonders for the mind.” Truly, 100% of people who exercise to the point of cardio-respiratory fitness will experience an increased sense of wellbeing. All these things can ease your stress levels. By being able to focus on one thing at a time with a calm and collected attitude, it can help you regain control in each situation of life, rather than letting the situations of life control you.

Get In Shape At Peak Fitness!

P

by Preston Bivens

eak Fitness opened in October of 2007 and was the culmination of a long-time dream that I had about owning my own gym. I had started working out in high school to gain some weight and get in shape and I just fell in love with “the iron.” The changes it made in my appearance, strength, and overall fitness were very gratifying. Like most things in life, if you work hard in the gym and are consistent, you can get the results you’re looking for. Eventually, my training led me to compete in several bodybuilding shows. The preparation and the extreme dieting that competing demands gave me a whole new understanding of willpower. But, as I’m learning more and more, when we mix our willpower with God’s mighty power, we can do all things! I have trained in many gyms in our area and in gyms abroad and have always enjoyed the social aspect, the sounds, and the encouragement you get when you see others who are working hard to achieve something. There is just an automatic bond between people who are gym goers: a kind of comraderie. So, as I got into real estate investing with my business partner, Mark Stanley, we started to see a need for a fitness center in Dalton. We wanted to open a gym that had the latest and greatest equipment and a motivating atmosphere that was both family friendly and

26 // April 2019

encouraged results, and the rest is history, as the saying goes. Peak Fitness is a large facility of over 23,000 feet with some of the best weight machines, free weights, and cardio equipment in Northwest Georgia. Yet, we have managed to keep that hometown, friendly atmosphere that our members really appreciate. After all, it’s really our members who make Peak Fitness the place to be.

Peak Fitness has many classes, including Cycle, Zumba, Yoga, Pilates, and our recently added Barre classes. These classes are designed to get you fit, strong, mobile, lean, and energized. For those who are really serious about getting in shape or who need that extra push, we have the best trainers around. If your thing is cardiovascular fitness and fat loss, we have treadmills, ellipticals, bikes, stepmills, and a rower to help get your heart pumping and your fat melting away. Peak Fitness also offers the best weight floor around. We have many selectorized machines and lots of Hammer Strength equipment. We have free weight bench presses and dumbbells up to 150 lb. We have squat racks, power racks, and a dead lift platform. We have a turf training area where you can do battle ropes, push a sled, or do agility training. Peak Fitness encourages results and we don’t try to hold you back; we want to help you push forward to a healthier, stronger you! Peak Fitness also offers daycare, a smoothie bar, and a supplement shop to help with your nutrition needs. With country club-style locker rooms, TVs everywhere, tanning, and sauna and hydro massages, we can work you out, feed you, and then help you relax. Peak Fitness has also teamed up with local charities like the Carter Hope Center, a local organization that assists people in overcoming their substance addictions. We have been involved with cancer awareness programs, Coats for Kids, and Christmas Angels. At Peak Fitness, we care about our members and our community. The recipe for true success is to work hard, treat people right, and give God all the glory. Peak Fitness is good, but God is great! I surrendered my life to Jesus in 2008 after coming to realize that my sins had separated me from God. The two most important days in anyone’s life are the day they are

born and the day that they realize why they were born. My life verse has become Mathew 6:33: “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” Seek the Kingdom of God first and live righteously and He will give you what you need! It’s Jesus and His will for our life that will lead us to the greener pastures. So, at Peak Fitness, we play upbeat Christian music, we put up encouraging Bible verses, and we sometimes sell Christ-themed t-shirts in our pro shop. I believe that whatever we do or wherever we go, we are to let our light shine before others. Here are some practical ways to include God in your workout routine: 1. Pray before your workout, either by yourself or with your workout partner. Thank Him for the ability to move and breathe and pray that this workout would improve your health, strength, energy, etc.’ 2. Pray for an opportunity to proclaim His goodness to someone and the boldness to carry it out. 3. Catch up on some Bible reading during your cardio session and pray for the people around you. 4. Thank Him for any goals reached, such as weight lost or a new personal record on the weight floor. 5. Acknowledge that without Him, you can do nothing, but with Him, all things are possible. 6. Use the truth of His goodness to ignite your willpower to live a life that is pleasing to Him in all your actions, words, and deeds. To God be the glory!

Worrying about whether you’ll be happy during retirement is a relatively new concern, historically speaking. Up until the late 1800s—and much later in some parts of the world—the idea simply didn’t exist. If you were alive, there was work to be done, which usually meant working the family farm. But now, thanks to longer life expectancy and dramatic changes in technology, retirement is the start of a whole new chapter in life. Those aging farm workers of the 1800s had something valuable that many retiring Boomers may not feel: a

From the Heart, On Friendship

beloved Scripture reminds us daily that a “sweet friendship refreshes the soul” (Proverbs 27:9). Such a seemingly short Scripture, yet it encompasses so much more. Throughout the course of my life, I have been very blessed by the friends God has placed into my life. Sometimes, they are friends by blood, and sometimes, friends by choice. My mom, sisters, and cousins are some of my dearest friends, no doubt. There is also no doubt in my mind that He knew just who I would need for each season of my life. The changing seasons for me would include marriage, motherhood, personal growth, faith, cultivating my servant heart, and sadly, seasons of heartache, sorrow, and loss. God may place friends in our lives to walk alongside us for just one of these seasons, yet other times, He places friends in our lives that will be present for each and every season we face for the entirety or remainder of our lives. What a true blessing and gift it is to know that He loves us so much that He would orchestrate our life choices so that our paths would cross and bring such special people into our lives. Into my life. People who encourage my dreams and passions, who pray for me and my family, who mentor me in ways they do not even know, who teach me how to love more deeply, who sit in the darkness with me when my heart is broken, and who, by doing so, remind me of the importance of doing these things in return. As you read these words, I wonder if your mind drifts a little and you start to picture the friend that represents each of these things that I have mentioned and, of course, the things I didn’t mention. I know mine drifted and I saw their faces clearly as I typed these words. It is my prayer that, should they read this article, they say, “I know she’s talking about me.” The value they have each individually and collectively added to my life is immeasurable. Just a few weeks ago, a friend I have known for 25 years lost one of her very best friends (of nearly 34 years) due to cancer. When I started writing my article, she immediately came to mind. Below, she perfectly states and sums up the embodiment of Proverbs 27:9.

40 // April 2019

“Tammy [Mauldin] and I had an instant friendship. She wasn’t a boss or co-worker; she was my family. We shared marriages, divorce, having our babies, and the loss of loved ones. We laughed and said we raised each other. I had no idea in October of 1985 what a blessing I was about to receive. I had the honor of sharing almost 34 years with one of the greatest blessings of my life. It was a friendship like none other. She taught me to love unconditionally and to always be kind to others. She showed me what having faith in our Lord is truly like. We knew each other’s thoughts without saying a word. We could read each other like a

book. What we had is the true definition of friendship. To lose her was like losing my soul. There will never be enough words to describe the love we shared.” —Tammie Walker May we all strive to have a friendship as special and rewarding as the one these two friends shared: a friendship that weathers the seasons of change and sees us walking hand in hand throughout each of them. May we all recognize His divine hand in such a treasured gift. There is no doubt that when I read Romans 12:10, Ecclesiastes 4:9-10, Proverbs 18:24, John 15:12-13, and Proverbs 17:17 that He already knew the bond that true friends would share.

speed or pattern. As I’m watching a glitter-filled candle burn, I think to myself

that his setting is filled with beauty, a sense of calm, and peace.

What would the appearance of the wax look like? Would my candle still be glowing? Wax doesn’t burn; neither does the glitter. They just melt down, continuously exposing the wick so it will burn. Can you imagine a pile of wax filled with shiny glitter uniquely formed where the candle was sitting?

it under a bushel? NO! I’m gonna to let it shine.” We all sang this little chorus with gusto! I’m going to let my life’s candle shine unobstructed, lighting up the world in which I live. What happened to some of us? What was able to snuff out our flame? A single flame burns the wick down and melts the wax away, leaving a uniquely solidified pile of wax at its base. As I live my life, my candle burns down shorter and shorter. When my fire has successfully consumed all of the wick, my life is finished. As I look back upon my life and view the melted wax at life’s end, did I reflect the light of the world as I should? Did those around me see the uniqueness of God’s creation in me? Does anyone remember the shiny glitter? It's satan’s business to continually try to snuff out the flame of God instilled in us at our creation. All babies are cute and innocent at birth, but they all grow up. As

The L’Abri Symphony Orchestra is in its 26th year of bringing great symphonic music to the public. So that anyone can come to enjoy the music, we offer FREE ADMISSION to all of our concerts. We are a faith-based, all-volunteer group, with a core of professional musicians and teachers. About 1/3 of the group are students at area schools and colleges. We have on average about 65 members. All that we do is made possible by our host, First Baptist Church of Dalton, which provides a large rehearsal space and the use of the Sanctuary for our performances. We are supported by corporate sponsorship, private donations, and love offerings at our concerts. Outreach: The 8-member L’Abri String Ensemble brings our music to schools, small churches, the public library, retirement and nursing homes, and the Creative Arts Guild. A violinist visits students in grades 3, 4, & 5 at one elementary school before each Spring and Fall concert to demonstrate string instruments and tell about the symphony orchestra. There are no orchestras in area schools, so L’Abri functions as an extension of the school system by providing a learning opportunity to advanced students, with no fees or charges. Contact: If you are interested in joining the Symphony, e-mail siroliver@windstream.net for information. Look and You Will Hear by Robin Faulkner

said “no” to God. In fact, I told Him “no” several times. I am grateful He refused to give up and encouraged me to create my first piece of prophetic art. I remember

how He brought the image up to me over and over again. I remember how He connected me to the image. I remember I felt like I would be consumed if I didn’t create the art that God the Father laid on my heart. It became as “fire shut up in my bones” (Jeremiah 20:9). I also remember my complete surprise and delight at how God used that creation to speak His love at just the right moment to its receivers. He used my art to speak to them and, by speaking to them, He ultimately spoke to me. I am an artist. I have an inner drive to create art. When I see sunlight dancing through the leaves of a tree or a deep shadow that makes the color of the petals of a flower “pop,” it delights my eyes. What about that wistful look in a dog’s eyes or the way a curl of hair gently frames a child’s face? It is fascinating. Humor, love, vastness, intricacy, light, shadow, movement, friendship, and so much more wind their way into my heart, and my desire is to capture that moment on canvas and share it with the world. My artist statement, “From my heart to the canvas,” developed when the Holy Spirit revealed this connection to me: not only with the image but also with the story. There is a story to be told that words cannot express, a story that can only be told with color and imagery, a story that not only has the desire to be told, but that needs to be seen repeatedly. By
