God’s Promises

Sometimes in life, we think that we can do things on our own, and sometimes, we are able to accomplish them, but there is always a reason that we accomplish them. Things that we do in life and accomplish are not by accident: they are always in God’s blueprints for us. We may not always see it that way all of the time, but one way or another, it is revealed to us.

God gives us the ability to do many things on our own as an expression of free will and a choice that He allows us to make. But He is always there, whether it’s in the form of a song, a small gesture by nature, such as a bird with a happy song making you feel like things are all right in your world right at that moment, a beautiful sunny day after a storm, or a brightly shining rainbow. We make promises to ourselves every day: sometimes for things that we really mean, such as, “I promise myself that I will do better tomorrow,” sometimes for things that we hope for, such as, “I promise if I get that new outfit, I will work extra hard to save my money next time,” and sometimes to give someone else hope, such as, “I promise things are going to be okay and will work out.”

We go through life in such a hurry nowadays that it seems we don’t ever slow down to enjoy life as we once did, like back when our parents and grandparents were growing up. Back then, promises weren’t just made: they were kept, and they would come to pass for those who they made the promise to as they believed with all their heart and would speak it into existence. This is how God works, just as the writer tells us in Hebrews 13:5: “For he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.” We all experience things in life differently, and this is what makes life worth living as we learn from our mistakes and each other.

Our brothers and sisters in Christ, near and far, experienced bad storms this week, some worse than others, but my God always shows up with His promises.

He reveals His promises to us just like how, after the storms, He showed us a beautiful rainbow in the sky. This brought tears to my eyes, as I always remember how God’s Word in Genesis 9:13 tells us, “I do set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the earth.” When I feel like things are falling apart or I’m having a bad day, I always try to take a moment to remember that God promises it will get better.
