My Identity in Christ by Luke Sanford

Lewis once said, “Your real, new self (which is Christ’s and also yours, and yours just because it is His) will not come as long as you are looking for it. It will come when you are looking for Him.” Does that sound strange? The same principle holds for more everyday matters. Even in social life, you will never make a good impression on other people until you stop thinking about what sort of impression you are making." So much in life is contingent upon our identity. Whether we ask a girl out or not has a lot more to do with our gumption and identity than we think. The more we believe in ourselves, the more we know who we are. So who are we? What is our identity and what is it placed in? I'm finding more and more that my identity is, and always should be placed in Christ in whom is much boldness and authority. If I place my life in Him, in a sense, I gain His attributes. I become more like Him. I change who I am by committing to someone else or something else. Whether we believe it or not, we are always committing to one thing or one person. There’s a line in a song by One Republic, called “I Lived” that says, “With every broken bone I swear I lived.” I love this, and I think that part of this man’s identity is found in living. It’s found in what he does (his music), and who he is (with every broken bone I swear I lived). So we know he lives; we know he sings, and these two things comprise part of his identity. Now the beauty in this is that we also have these attributes of our identity. I like to live by Galatians 2:20 that says, “I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but

Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me” (KJV). This verse breathes through me and is something I find my identity in. It’s one thing to know my identity is in Christ; it’s another to put that into action. Our actions correspond greatly to our identity. They show who we are. I wouldn’t want to witness for Christ unless my identity was in Him. I think identity is a longing of the soul, an emanation of our will that is profoundly important. What is your identity placed in? Is it an idol? What’s that? An idol is anything you look to or put above Christ. That can even be something as intangible as culture. In a book titled Jesus + Nothing = Everything, I read this quote about idols. I think everyone should read this book by Tullian Tchividjian. In another book, Center Church, Tim Keller says that if at any time something in culture becomes greater in your mind than the Gospel’s ability to transcend it, it has become an idol of sorts. If we don’t know who we are, how can we do what we are suppose to do? This is the question I posit for you. I want to be sure of my identity; I want to be sure of who I am because as Paul said in 1 Corinthians 9:22, “To the weak became I as weak, that I might gain the weak: I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some” (KJV). The only way to be able to become all things, is to place your identity in the unchangeable Christ. Luke Sanford is a recent pastoral ministry major graduate from Lee University. He is an aspiring minister and writer. He hopes to help lead a five-fold ministry based on the Paul's Ephesian model in August. He also endeavors to become a writer and help churches and nonprofits with their creative process and branding.

Leading in Tune
A
God tunes us to reflect His handiwork to the world around us. by Deven Wallace
luthier (person who makes guitars) is well acquainted with the intricate process of making the unique sound of each instrument, starting with the choice of tree because each tree produces a different sound. As with us, there is literally a unique sound of worship locked up inside each piece of wood. Like the luthier, God intricately crafts, shapes, sands, and carves us to make a sound that is pleasing to Him—a sound that reflects His handiwork to the world around us.
The Process of Tuning
Despite the effort and skill that goes into creating a guitar, its sound is distorted if the instrument is not tuned. Tuning is not the job of the creator of the guitar but the musician who plays it. Sometimes my daughter spends more time tuning her violin than she does in performing her piece. The performance of any stringed instrument would be ineffective without the process of tuning. In our own lives, can we afford to endure the process of formation only to reach the moment of destiny out of tune? A stringed instrument needs tuning after many hours of playing, or it can be knocked out of tune if it is dropped or handled roughly. Also, extreme temperatures can cause tightening or loosening of the strings. When any of these situations occur, the instrument is not meant to be thrown away or abandoned, it simply needs to be tuned. The longer the musician neglects the need to be tuned, the more the sound deteriorates. We can relate this to our heart before the Father. Proverbs 4:23 tells us that out of the heart spring the issues of life. If our heart is out of tune, it

will make our life out of alignment with His purpose for us. An instrument can be tuned by another instrument or by a tuner. Jesus Christ is our example and our tuner. He sent the Holy Spirit to walk with us and keep us in tune with the heart of our Lord. When we fail to spend time in His presence, allowing Him to mold us, change us, and adjust us, we slowly slip out of alignment with His heart and will for us. Then our sound does not reflect His kingdom or His purpose for our lives. We may even attempt to tune ourselves to something other than Him and be deceived into thinking we are in tune.
The Influence of a Woman
The most dangerous aspect of living a life out of tune is the influence we have over those we lead. At church, in the marketplace, but most importantly at home, women lead whether given a title or not. The influence of a woman is so potent it caused the fall of humanity in the beginning and her influence was temporarily harnessed. The serpent targeted Eve for a reason—her influence in Adam’s life. If a women's heart is not in fine tune with the Lord, then those tuning their instrument to hers (her spouse and children) will also live off pitch. Our children should tune themselves to the sound of hope and faith, which means we must declare faith and not fear by modeling a consistent pitch when life is shifting. The world is unstable, but God does not change. Hebrews 13:8 says that Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Psalms 91 paints the perfect example of the life of a believer in the secret place when all hell is breaking loose. The only way to remain constant is to be grounded in His presence, the secret place. My challenge to you, woman of God, is to check your tone and pitch. Ask the Holy Spirit to examine your heart and fine-tune you to reflect His kingdom in your life. Spare those under your influence from a daily off-pitch melody. Don’t just throw in the towel when you realize your sound is less than pleasing; let that truth drive you into a greater pursuit of God. Go deep in His presence and He will give you grace to lead in tune. Pastor Deven and her husband Bishop Kevin Wallace, co-pastor Redemption Point Church (RPC) based in Ooltewah, Tennessee. Waiting for Daddy by Beth Henderson
ach day when my husband gets home from work, my daughters race to see who can get to him first. Hugging Daddy is a highlight of their day. As a mother, I guess I could be a bit jealous of their affection for their father, but in reality, I know their relationship with him is critical to their well-being, and it gives them an enormous sense of security that will last them well into adulthood. Besides, if hugging their daddy is a priority for these 11- and 15-year-old girls, who am I to complain? This “hugging-daddy” race really began a number of years ago when they were much younger, and one day, it taught me something about the priorities in my life. God used an incident with my youngest daughter to remind me that I needed to put getting to know Him above everything else, and that sometimes I don’t have things my way because I haven’t done things His way. That morning, my youngest daughter woke before daybreak. Her daddy leaves for work early in the morning while she is still in bed. My oldest daughter, however, is an early riser and is often awake to see him leave. She gets a hug from him and he leaves encouraged by his daughter’s expression of love. Having heard her daddy praise her sister’s actions, our youngest daughter decided she would be the one to steal his affection. She got out of bed early and sat on the stairs watching the front door, waiting to hug him before he left. She didn’t know he went out the basement door, so she sat and watched. Excited and smiling, she waited for Daddy. I know this because after I heard his truck pull out of the driveway, I heard her on the stairs. Our oldest daughter had always been instructed to go back to bed after he left, because there was still another hour before she had to get ready for school. But I found my

sweet youngest daughter sitting patiently on the stairs. She was radiant. “Jessie, what are you doing?” “I’m waiting for Daddy.” “But Daddy’s gone,” I said, putting my arm around her. I could see the disaster that was coming. “But Mommy, I’ve been sitting here a long time, and Daddy hasn’t come by.” “Baby, he goes out the basement door so he won’t wake you. He left already.” She was devastated. She wanted to do the right thing to make her daddy proud. I was heartbroken for her, and we cried together. My husband had been leaving by the basement door for years, and she never knew it. When I cried with her that morning, I cried because she was hurting. I wanted to turn back the clock. I wanted to make my husband go out the front door. How dare he not go that way? His daughter was waiting for him there. I also saw myself that morning. How many times have I, with good intentions, set out to do something I thought was the right thing? Then, when things didn’t turn out the way I wanted them to, I wanted God to fix them. I wanted God to turn back the clock and do things my way. But God is the same yesterday, today, and forever. I have to seek the way of the Father. His ways are not my ways, but they are always the best way. I’m trying to seek God and His direction more carefully now, because I don’t want to settle for being close to where God is; I want to be where God is. How often do we experience the pains of this life, when all we really need to do is go the way God does? Obstacles by Teddy Savage
bstacles . . . we all have them, right? It seems they lie around every twist and turn we make in our lives. The moment we try to make one giant stride or leap of faith, up pops a hurdle or two, or three, or maybe even five. The most intriguing thing about these “speed humps,” is that most of the time, we create them ourselves. We allow our fears to hinder us from realizing our full potential and achieving the goals we set forth for becoming the best we can be. This paradox seems to rear its ugly head annually around this time of the year when we resolve to attain a tangible goal or a fitness resolution. We muster up all the courage needed to spark the desire for change only to allow those pesky fears to extinguish the flame. Many times these fears fall under five major categories: 1. The fear of anxiety 2. The fear of feeling stupid 3. The fear of being a klutz 4. The fear of not belonging 5. The fear of the hard sell Let’s identify these fears and then flip them in a way that will help us to overcome them and use them as fuel to see our fitness futures to their ultimate potential. The fear of anxiety is being uncertain that we look the way we want to, or feel the way we ought to. This fear affects our confidence and leads to a sense of discouragement. However, if we could see this fear as an opportunity to go somewhere that was free of judgment—a place where we could identify with individuals who share the same fight we do in an atmosphere that was friendly and conducive to making healthy lifestyle changes, we could be catapulted in the right direction. Similarly, most of us do not frequent the gym often enough to understand how to use the equipment properly. This leads to the fear of feeling stupid, which has a deep impact on our pride. However, our lack of understanding can

be seen as a blank canvas—one that requires no erasing of mistakes or blemishes, only the addition of proper instruction and encouraging guidance. Going to a gym that has a certified trainer who doesn’t work off of commission but has a vested interest in the members he/she works with would be the guiding light many of us need to navigate the unknown. This would keep us on track with our goals and help us to keep going. In similar fashion, the fear of being a klutz, or not being in sync with everyone else in the gym, can create a feeling of bewilderment because everyone else seems to be moving at a different speed. The best way to overcome this hurdle would be to find a gym that has certain areas that include a designed circuit—one that takes members through a total body workout and includes a timer that keeps everyone on the same pace. Likewise, the feeling of being alone, or not belonging, can be a deterrent. It’s the feeling of being the only one at a particular stage of fitness or age bracket. There are many fitness institutions, but very few have an all-inclusive feel to them. Going to a gym that caters to a wide variety of individuals and various fitness levels, age ranges, and body types, is the best possible way to address this fear. If our objective is to make lasting lifestyle changes, it is imperative that we seek out a gym that focuses more on general health and wellness as opposed to outward appearance. When trying to decide on which gym fits our needs, the last thing we want to worry about is having to deal with someone giving us a hard-sell pitch that is littered with things we don’t need and empty promises that are never kept. Often times, we pay for unused amenities and struggle to find those resources that will genuinely help us reach our fitness goals. The fear of the hard-sell vanishes when we settle into a place that has a friendly and accommodating staff who promotes lasting lifestyle changes and offers free instruction without attempting to up-sell memberships for commission. Most of the time, resolutions have a shelf life. They start out strong but fail to become the lasting lifestyle changes we desire. Usually, the reasons behind this pitfall center around fears, but there is a place for each of us that will help to overcome these fears and use them as motivating factors. Taking the time to choose the right place will make all the difference and help us to reach the top of the mountain. Fine Arts Program

We love to see our students’ creativity manifest through a variety of avenues: concert, rhythmic, and worship bands, chorale music and show choir, an awardwinning dance team, music appreciation classes, and a comprehensive art program, whose work has been displayed at the Hunter Art Museum in downtown Chattanooga. Besides these in-school courses, our multitalented staff allows us to offer students private music lessons— both vocal and instrumental. UCA’s students have the opportunity to learn a variety of instruments, from basics like piano, guitar, drums, and bass to the woodwind and brass instruments, as well as the mandolin, violin, and cello. Leadership Development
At United Christian Academy we believe that leadership is service—putting others’ interests before our own. We think one of our main jobs as educators is to empower our student leaders and to provide them with resources and outlets through which to serve. UCA has established a National Elementary Honor Society chapter, as well as a Student Council, both of which present opportunities for UCA students to serve through Samaritan’s Purse and The Caring Place, at nursing homes in Cleveland, by distributing Thanksgiving baskets to families in need in the community, making Christmas memorable by donating gifts for local children, and various other projects.

owever, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself,and the wife must respect her husband” (Ephesians 5:33 NIV). This past February my husband and I went away for the weekend for the first time in more than seventeen years! My church has an annual couples retreat in Gatlinburg, and thanks to some awesome friends of ours, we were able to attend this year. Having now gone away together, it is something we will for plan again! The speakers were Scott and Elizabeth Sheppard, and they were fantastic! I took a ton of notes which I will be referring to for this article. The main lesson was that men need respect and women need love. When the man doesn't feel respected by his wife, he does not show love; and when the wife doesn't feel loved, she will act disrespectful. We create a vicious cycle that is difficult to break. I will be honest here and tell you that this is the exact problem my husband and I have had in our marriage. We haven't intentionally done these things, it just happened. I don't think you could find a couple more opposite than my husband and me. Our love languages are very different and every other aspect of how we respond to life is different. The great thing is that we are in this together, and we keep learning more about each other. Here are some things we learned that weekend 1. We love and react different (not wrong) just different. 2. We need to hear what is in each other's heart and not always what their words or actions are showing. 3. You cannot be disrespectful to motivate love, and you cannot be unloving to motivate respect.

4. The one who sees himself or herself as the most mature moves first. Regardless of who is responsible. Some of the mistakes couples make are thinking that he can be unloving and get respect and that she can be disrespectful to get love. A man's greatest need is to be respected by his wife and family. He needs it like he needs air. If she is putting him down and not letting him be the man of the house, the vicious cycle starts. Same is true in the opposite, if he won't show the love his wife desperately needs and craves. Here are a few tips from the other couples who attended the retreat on how to keep your marriage on the right track were: 1. Communicate—don't be afraid to tell the truth. 2. Always be honest with each other. 3. Watch your body language. It can say so much. 4. Replace selfishness with selflessness. 5. Always speak highly about each other in front of others. 6. Do not compare yourselves to others. 7. Celebrate wins and losses together. 8. Be intentional with your time. You are responsible for your own response. You cannot blame your emotions on someone else. When we are mad and feel unloved, we lash out. It is our responsibility to keep our words in check and our emotions under control. Show respect regardless of how you are feeling. Is this easy? No way! I still haven't mastered it completely! I want to make my relationship with my husband a goal for my children to strive for when they are married. Wives, you have to respect even when he does not deserve it. God never ask us if we are deserving of being loved or forgiven, He simply does it. Who are we to refuse to do the same thing? Being submissive is a Godly strength. We are different, but equal and being submissive does not make you less than your husband. You will be judged on what you do, not on what your spouse does. God sees your attempts; He hears your cries. He knows the desires of your heart. Men, love your wives with every ounce of your being, and wives respect your husband every second of the day. My First Half-Marathon Race by Gloria Moser
never thought I would want to run a half-marathon. I began running 5K Races a few years ago and got hooked, but I felt as though a 5K was my max. It took all I had to complete 3.1 miles. I just didn't think I had the ability to finish 13.1 miles, a half-marathon. I mean there’s a huge difference (10 miles to be exact) between a 5K and a half-marathon. Last spring, a couple from our church invited others to join them in running the Rock 'n' Roll Half-Marathon in Savannah, Georgia, in the fall of 2014, which they had run before and recommended it because of the great weather, and the flat, scenic course. My husband had ran the Rock 'n' Roll Half-Marathon in Nashville in 2013 and wanted to do another one, so he signed up. After several weeks of thinking it over, I finally made the decision to sign up too, and immediately began researching training plans. I told myself that if I commit to the race, I am not backing down, so I better get prepared. Several other couples from our church signed up for the Savannah race, and we began training together and keeping each other accountable. Each week my goal was to add a mile on my long-run day, and my secondary goal was to run the full distance without stopping to walk. Through God’s grace, I was able to complete nearly every training run without walking. I learned that if I would just slow my pace down a bit from what I was used to running for 5K races that I could handle longer distances better.

Running requires a lot of mental focus and determination. My mentality shifted from focusing on cutting my finish times (which is how I trained for each 5K) to being able to run longer distances. Even though I had been running for years, running longer distances was new to me, and every time I finished a personal record distance, I felt a great sense of accomplishment. I also found that my training time was a great opportunity to spend time talking to God. Training was hard at times. I got some blisters, and I had to sacrifice some sleep, but my hard work paid off. The weather for the race was perfect; the historic scenic course and huge live oaks with Spanish moss were beautiful. Also, there were sideline supporters everywhere cheering on the 17,000 runners. Many held encouraging or funny posters, which I took the time to read. Instead of only focusing on getting to the finish line as quickly as possible, I wanted to take it all in and really enjoy my first half-marathon. I’m so glad I did. The verse in Philippians 4:13: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” (NKJV), became very real to me when I crossed the finish line in Savannah in two hours, 26 minutes, 55 seconds, without stopping to walk and praising the Lord for no injuries.

Keep Moving and Press On by Craig Gray
“N
o, you can’t see it from here!” I shouted over the gusting wind roaring down Pitamakin Pass in Glacier National Park. “You can’t see it. I know it’s there and the only way to get there is to keep moving!” We had been asked by the Continental Divide Trail Association to assist in mapping the last 120 miles of the Continental Divide into Waterton, Canada. Alpine hiking is a joy my dad and brothers participate in annually, but surprisingly, my two younger sisters decided they wanted in on the adventure. For the first time, they would tackle the rigors of alpine hiking and high-elevation backpacking for a week, helping us map the wonders of the Continental Divide. Unfortunately, on their first day we were headed up 7.7 miles to 7595 feet on one of the more strenuous trails in Glacier. Pitamakin is known for breath-taking views, sheer granite drop-offs and high winds. The wind is funneled in by Rising Wolf Mountain and Finsch peak, and on this day, a storm was coming, temperatures were dropping, and the wind was howling. My brother had already grabbed my youngest sister twice to keep her from blowing off the side of the mountain, and our trail permit had become a casualty of the wind. We were pushing hard to get past Sperry Lodge in the pass, find some shelter, and hopefully get setup before the storm hit. Of all the obstacles facing hikers in the Rockies, the mental challenges often are the greatest. For first-timers, especially coming from lower elevations, the constant ascent coupled with the decreasing oxygen makes every

movement a struggle. The backpack feels like it has a Buick in it and leaves you longing to catch a view of the summit. The problem is that the mountain fools you; it is so large and the human perspective so small that every switchback in the trail makes it appear that the summit is just over the next ridge. On this trip, we did not make the pass before the storm slammed into the mountain. We were being buffeted by wind and hail; lightning struck the mountain with thunderous crashes, and our freshmen hikers kept asking, “Is that it? Is that the top?” We replied as we pushed on, “No, you cannot see it from here! We know it is there, and the only way to get there is to keep moving! Even as veterans, we were worried on this trip, but our only choice was to press on. Finally, after many hours of exposure and elevation gain, we burst into the Sperry Lodge with rain and hail at our backs. We were greeted by other backpackers huddled around a fire, sipping hot cocoa, and playing games. What a reward! I am reminded of this so often in my own life. That grueling trip is so much like the trials that buffet and assail us; yet, we are assured of a reward that is ahead. The fact is, we cannot see it from here because eye has not seen and ear has not heard what the Father has prepared for us (see 1 Cor. 2:9). The only way to get there is to keep moving!

Worry Not by Baylie Suits
W
e know that in the last days that God said things will be tough, but Christians should
worry not. God tells us in His Word that we should not have a spirit of fear but a sound mind. I worry about many things. Being as young as I am, people tell me that it’s silly to worry, but look at what is going on in the world. We watch the news and listen to the shootings, the wars, and many other things. Later, we began to get in deep thought about the world and things that might happen, and it gets to us. We must realize that this is only the devil trying to destroy us. We must pray and ask God for peace because the devil is not stronger than God. God tells us to fear not. Not only is worrying a bad thing to do, but it can also lead to physical problems.
How to Prevent Worrying
Sometimes when I worry I think of Bible verses that tell me not to fear. It calms me because Matthew 6:25-27 says, “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or drink, nor about your body, or what you will put on it. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life?” Or maybe Matthew 6:34 that says, “Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble” (ESV). These are good verses to read, but there are many more.
Trusting in the Lord
Even though there are many major issues in the

world, we have to trust God to take care of those issues. God tells us to trust in Him. Worrying is such a lie from the devil. He puts these in our minds to bring us down, but we should call upon God’s name when we fill this spirit come upon us. So instead of watching the news, read Bible verses that remind us to have peace even in the worst of times. Do not walk in the path of worry and fear.
In the Last Days
God tells us that in the last days there will be trials and troubles, as well as danger, but as Christians we know that we do not need to worry because we have faith in him. If you are not a Christian, you should pray and find God. When you are scared, pray and read the Bible. God is always there no matter what your situation is. He will help you and remind you that you should not worry. For God wants you to have peace and a sound mind.
In the Future
In the future when you feel the spirit of fear and worry, think of these things: • Pray and ask God to help you have peace • Read scriptures about not worrying • Think good thoughts • Trust in God even in the bad times because God is in control. These things will help you, especially during times of fear and worry. Remember God says worry not, for I am with you.
