Letter from the Editor

M

ark Twain said, “Writing is easy. All you have to do is cross out the wrong words.” Don’t we wish writing was that easy? It is not; writing is hard work! While serving as book editor for a publishing house for many years, I learned a lot about writing by editing other writers’ articles and books. Often, beginning writers think: If I come up with a great idea, it can carry me. This is not the case because even the noblest of ideas and the most absorbing of themes can be twisted out of shape in the hands of a careless writer. First of all, I discovered that good writing is mostly rewriting. Hemingway claimed to have rewritten the final chapter of A Farewell to Arms 39 times. There is nothing praiseworthy in rewriting; it is simply a fact of life for people who care about getting things right. It’s difficult, but if you want to write, you must rewrite. Editing yourself is the most difficult because most writers are easily seduced by their own prose. The editorial act must therefore be a deliberate infliction of pain. I probably wouldn’t express the self-editing processing this way, but you must delete all the words that add nothing to the story. I call this “cutting out the clutter.” I first learned to do this

when I was commissioned to write an article and was given a maximum word count. I learned that too many descriptions and words that deviate from the story clutter up the writing. Through the years, I developed a set of editing tools to use for improving my own writing and the essays of my students enrolled in College Writing. When I worked as book editor, one of the dreaded tasks on my job description was to write rejection letters. My boss referred to these as “ugly-baby” letters. No mother believes her baby is ugly, and most writers think their writing is beautiful. Understanding this, I tried to be as affirming as possible, while pointing out why the writing did not fit our purpose or that the author must rewrite large portions of the submission. When self-editing, I have found that the following five questions will bring my manuscript under a microscope of refinement: • Is this verb the best possible one? • Is this metaphor forced? • Have I used a mixed metaphor? • Isn’t that phrase really too threadbare to use? • Does this analogy work? When does this process end? The short answer is that the process never ends; the clock merely runs out, you turn off the computer and press it into the hands of the editor.

By Grace through Faith

And you were dead in the trespasses and sins in

which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience. Before we met Christ, we were dead men walking. We had all the characteristics of life, but we were dead inside. The things we see people do now and shake our heads; that was us. I may not have done the exact act, but I did things just as bad−if not worse. I think our minds try to protect us and forget how dead we were before Christ. Like I said,

This definition of mercy fits the theology of salvation by grace perfectly. It is not of works lest any man should boost. The perfect ones don’t need a Savior. It is those of us in the miserable group, which is the entirety of mankind that needs mercy. You will not have to follow me around long to see that I am in the “mercy” group. That brings me back to the question, “Why does God love me?” I am not sure I will ever fully understand it in this life. I don’t think why He loves me truly matters. In the middle of verse 4, Paul says His love for us is great. It had to be to have pity on the miserable. Do you need a little pity?

Spread Your Wings and Fly

“He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” —Isa. 40:29-31 NIV by Cheryl Bothe

The Virtual Parent Trap

T

With the advent of modern technology, particularly smart devices, today’s Christian parents are challenged with the task of knowing where their children are, even while physically inside the home. by Jeff Frazier

he virtual world in which we now operate as a society has permeated every facet of our lives, and it has the unfortunate ability to take us and our loved ones to dark, unsafe places. It is indeed unsettling to consider the possibility of our young ones being exposed to unsavory content on the Web or fall victim to an online predator who masquerades as another child. As parents, we must obviously set limits and guidelines for our kids with regard to the time they spend online, whether it be gaming, chatting with friends, or watching streaming content (that part is self-evident). The portion less apparent is how we can stay abreast of the constant influx of new technologies and media platforms that are emerging on an everyday basis and invading our cyberspace. In other words, we might know all about our children’s Facebook and Twitter accounts, but do most of us check to see whether or not they have engaged in other social forums? Have we even heard of some of them? Would we know how to check? In all likelihood, some of you have already drawn a blank as we consider the answers to those questions. We are also faced with the challenge of grandparent involvement. If you are like me, neither my parents nor in-laws have any idea how technology works.

20 // September 2017

Admittedly, most of my generation also are somewhat lost amidst a sea of zeros and ones, and we are just thankful for DVRs that no longer require us to set that extremely annoying, flashing digital clock. However, our parents typically possess little or no knowledge of anything electronic beyond their cordless phones and flat-screen TVs. At best, their babysitting skills are only three dimensional, and do not extend to the virtual world where our children often go. Therefore, anytime they are away from us is an opportunity for them to go places they should not dare even enter. As troubling as all of this can be, Christians can rest assured that our heavenly Father already knew this time would come and that we would need His help and guidance. As tempting as it is for me to create a list of bullet points that have worked for my family, some of our methods may or may not work for you in your particular situation. What I can recommend wholeheartedly is asking the Lord how to handle it. There is no substitute for prayer and reading God’s Word when seeking answers to life’s most difficult questions. Only He can lead and guide us through life’s most challenging journeys.

PuroClean Property Damage Experts Many things in life are done out of a need to know. In 2005, Charles became certified as a Mold Inspector and Remediator. He became a disaster response chaplain through the Church of God Chaplain’s Commission.

P

uroClean is a leader in property damage emergency services by helping families and businesses overcome the devastation caused

by water, fire, mold, and other conditions resulting in property damage. PuroClean services the U.S. and Canada. Each franchise is independently owned and operated. PuroClean Property Damage Experts of Cleveland is owned and operated by Charles and Sharon Atkins and their children, Harrison and Breleigh. It is only fitting that the Atkins own a service business, because their lives can be defined as serving God and serving others. In the late 1990s and early 2000, Charles was on the Western North Carolina Church of God Laymen’s Board. Most of his weekends and holidays were spent putting new roofs on churches, flooring churches, or building a deck on a single Mom’s home. Charles could easily rally a group of men or women to do the chore at hand.

28 // September 2017

Responding to Disaster In October 1998, Hurricane Mitch made landfall, causing much destruction and devastation. Charles and Sharon felt the need to do something. They set up a 48-foot trailer in the parking lot of Walmart and collected goods. By the end of the weekend, the trailer was full. Because of Charles’ connection to the trucking industry, he was able to get the load to the affected area within a few days. The following September, Hurricane Floyd wreaked havoc on Eastern North Carolina with devastating flooding. Again, they set up in Walmart’s parking lot and collected goods. On Sunday morning of the same weekend, Charles, Sharon, baby Harrison, and about ten other volunteers loaded into the cab and sleeper of a tractor and trailer and set out to sites in Eastern North Carolina to distribute the goods collected. Charles hauled about seventeen loads of goods to various areas in Eastern North Carolina.

Because of his efforts, Charles was inducted into the Hall of Christian Excellence at the General Assembly of the Church of God in St. Louis, Missouri, July 29, 2000.

The Ultimate Good Deal

We have been given the ultimate “good deal” in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. In it, we received everything and paid absolutely nothing. So why are we so reluctant to tell of this “good deal?”

A

by Jade Morgan

good deal. We are constantly on the search for one, and when we find it, we waste no time sharing to anyone and everyone. Think about the last "good deal" you stumbled upon. For me, it was a pair of jeans on super sale. The best part was, they were not marked down. The price tag displayed the original, full price. I was actually hesitant to purchase these jeans at this amount, but I was in desperate need, and if you're like me, a pair of jeans that fits perfectly is hard to come by these days. I begrudgingly walked to the check-out line, tempted to bail, and laid my full price $32.99 jeans on the counter. The sales clerk said, “$6.59.” I legitimately just stood there for several seconds. “What? How much?” I replied brow furrowed and confused. “It’s $6.59; they were on sale,” she said in such a chipper tone that I couldn’t help but grin. I was not even out of line completely before I started telling my friends that I had gone shopping with. My good news was met with a multitude of, “Oh, wows!” As we tend to do in this day and age, I immediately had to text my best friend, my mother, sister, and anyone else that I knew would appreciate this amazing bargain. Sharing . . . that is more often than not our first reaction when the “good-deal train” pulls up in our lives. We want others to partake in the goodness we have received. Our good deal has brought us joy−not just happiness−but joy, which in turn causes us to rejoice. Our rejoicing typically is expressed in the form of telling others what we have experienced. It is no fun to celebrate alone, and everyone loves a good deal,

36 // September 2017

right? So, we tell anyone and everyone by texts sent, Tweets tweeted, Facebook statuses updated, maybe even an Instagram posted. We waste no time letting anyone who will listen in on this amazing deal. Joy is our motivator. Our perspective tends to shift. When we get a good deal shopping, we want to let everyone in on it because we want them to save money and get a bargain like we did—our emphasis is them/others. Most people would never reject saving money; there is something to gain! When it comes to sharing about the Lord, it is no longer about the other person benefiting, it becomes about me− what I look like, sound like, feel like, and what I could lose. Rejection becomes the motivator and fear. It is no longer about the good news of the good deal; sharing is the least of our concerns. We focus more on what we could lose, rather than what the other person could gain. We have made this beautiful, precious, and free gift about us and have taken all attention away from Jesus. We are commanded to share the gospel and make His name known, so why don’t we? Why don’t you? If someone were to reject you, it is not really you they are snubbing, it is the Lord. We are not called to let out fears, insecurities, and what-ifs prompt us. We are called to share of His love in His name for His glory. After all, sharing is caring.

Jail House Religion

W

The way to advance the kingdom of God is to show love and encouragement and not displaying hatred and rejection. by Gabriel Thomas

orking in the jail for nearly twenty years, I have seen many people come and go from the jail house several times a year, month, or even as frequently as every week. I have witnessed several generations within the same families come to jail for the same crimes. It’s a generational curse. I have seen mothers sit for hours in a court room hoping that their children get the help that they need to be free from addictions. I have seen fathers in uncontrollable tears while their daughters are slowly killing themselves with drugs and alcohol. Generation after generation, this seems to be the normal way of life for so many people in our country. How do we break this vicious cycle of generational incarceration? How can we help our society that we live in? How do we break loose the Enemy’s strong hold of addiction? The answer: a blood transfusion. No, not in the physical sense but in the spiritual sense. We have created two faith-based program pods in the Bradley County Jail. The inmates must request to be housed in these pods because they cannot be forced into any religious programs. They must volunteer without any pressure from the government or its employees. Once an inmate has been accepted into the faith-based pods, he or she must sign a contract and pledge to attend every program that is offered through volunteers in our community. The inmates are then flooded with the “Good News” that God has to offer them in their lives. There have been several inmates who have said that they've been in and out of jail several times and to rehabs many times, but they've only been free from their

40 // September 2017

addiction when they received the “blood” transfusion from Jesus Christ. We've witnessed families mend brokenness, disputes, hatred, and many other things all while being incarcerated. Some of you may call this “jail house religion;” however, we are the only thing that makes it jail house religion. When the inmates are eventually released back into society, we encourage them to seek out the church to continue their walk with Christ, and this is where we fail. Where are we? Why do we reject those that have tattoos or piercings? Why are we worried about how they are dressed? Just who do we think we are to make someone feel unwelcome in the house of God? Are you a house of “you” and not of God? The church is what makes jail house religion a viable thought. I'm not asking you to go out and purchase things for former inmates or build a house for them to stay in, or even spend one penny. I'm simply asking you to end the jail house religion talk by being the hands and feet of Jesus Christ. Do this by showing love and encouragement and not displaying hatred and rejection. Strawberry Cake by Melissa Phillips

hen my fourteen-year-old son was only a year old, he would love to help bake cakes. By the time he was five, he could tell you exactly how to bake a butter cake, which happens to be one of his favorites with chocolate icing. As time went on, his love for baking has increased. He is also great at grilling and trying new things. On the other hand, I like easy recipes. No matter what, when we are in the kitchen, we have so much fun together. Recently for my husband’s birthday, we wanted to surprise him with his favorite cake—strawberry cake with buttercream icing. The cost to purchase one is so expensive that my son and I decided to make one on our own. What we ended up with was a delicious dessert. So many of our memories are in the kitchen, and it usually ends up in a total mess. I have learned to just have fun, and now my seven year old even gets in on the fun from time to time. I encourage you to bake with your kids. As an adult, when Samuel opens his own restaurant, I see this one on the menu.

Ingredients for cake:

One box of Duncan Hines strawberry cake mix. Follow instructions on back of the box.

42 // September 2017

Ingredients for buttercream icing: 3 cups powdered sugar ⅓ cup butter or margarine, softened 1 ½ teaspoon vanilla 1 to 2 tablespoons milk

Grease a 13 x 9 inch cake pan

Steps to follow:

1. Bake cake, set aside to cool 2. In a medium bowl, mix powdered sugar and butter with spoon, stir in vanilla and one tablespoon of milk. 3. Gradually beat in just enough remaining milk to make frosting smooth and spreadable. If the frosting is too thick, beat in more milk, a few drops at a time. It should be creamy. After cake is completely cooled, frost. It’s so good. You can serve with fresh strawberries if you choose.

Melissa Phillips is married to her husband Jacen and they have two children, Samuel and Jaxen. She is the article coordinator at GoodNews Christian Magazine. Her heart is to see others transformed by the power of God.

Pride gets its strength from individuals seeing a misconception of their worth from the lack of a godly balance in their life. A prideful spirit causes deprivation of our soul’s spiritual nourishment which is necessary for victorious living in Christ.
