Good News for All

ome of us in the Church too often see evangelism as simply introducing people to Jesus only as a means to get to heaven. It neglects discipleship as well as the broader dimension of Jesus’s gospel of the Kingdom of God. Others fall into the trap of excluding personal evangelism purely for the goal of social activism. It’s too bad we so often err on one side or the other in this false dichotomy we’ve set up between personal salvation and social justice. Evangelism means sharing the euangelion: The Gospel, the Good News. The Good News is that Jesus came to put together a countercultural community that is committed to returning the world to right order and to restoring all that God has created. Isaiah 61, which Jesus read when he inaugurated his public ministry in Luke 4, represents Jesus’s mission statement – and therefore our mission statement. We are to preach the Good News to the poor, bind up the brokenhearted, proclaim freedom for the captives, and renew ruined cities. If we are busy doing all that, then the terms we use to talk about it (evangelism, social justice, activism, etc.) will simply no longer matter. There is power within the life of each individual who identifies himself or herself as a Jesus-follower to serve as a redeeming force within the culture and the world (2 Corinthians 5:20). And mercy is the common denominator, the underlying force that calls us, as Christians, to live out the good news Jesus proclaimed in real and need-meeting ways. If we are truly to mirror the compassion of Christ, we must reach the lost, serve with the poor, and be an active voice and advocate for setting the oppressed free; speaking up for those who lack the power or opportunity to speak for themselves. It all must matter to us, because it all matters to God. Mercy is the driving force behind the call to social justice – efforts to bring freedom and renewal to the oppressed and broken. Social justice is not just about giving relief; it’s also about empowering the individual and entire communities. Often when we talk about

social justice, we only focus on changing structures. But, if we only redesign the structures without empowering individuals within their communities, we fail to bring about systemic change. Of course, it must be said that social justice also goes beyond empowering individuals and communities. It also requires us to work at all levels of government to change the laws, institutions, barriers, and biases that oppress people. Apart from a personal relationship with Jesus, we will never be the light of Christ in the world. No matter on which side of the evangelism-social justice spectrum you stand, I encourage you to Google the words “Christians are” and scroll through the first few pages of results. It’s an exercise that’s both enlightening and discouraging. Those who are simply social activists can be just as mean and judgmental as some who proclaim Jesus evangelistically but live and act like hell. The prophet Zechariah reminds us, “Neither by power, nor by strength, but by my spirit, says the Lord” (Zechariah 4:6). Personal piety is just as essential as social justice and missional action. We believe in a God who can bring life back from the dead. If we then act on that belief with our voices, hands, feet, and bank accounts, then nothing will be impossible. At its core, the Gospel of Jesus Christ is the Gospel of the Kingdom of God, and Jesus is the King of that Kingdom. We, as his followers, are to submit to his authority in order that we may embody his mission on earth. We must move from simply debating cognitive theory and instead start holding one another accountable for naming the name of Jesus, serving the world in practical ways, and giving voice to the voiceless and hopeless. Then we are truly living out the mission to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. Rev. Are You a Clanging Cymbal?

hink about it for a second. You’re in a small room talking with a friend, and every time he or she opens his or her mouth the sound of a clanging cymbal explodes out and rattles your eardrums. If you’re like most people, you would instantly shut him or her out and try to get as far away as possible. Christians, even with the best of intentions, can have the same effect on those around them. 1 Corinthians 13:1 says, “If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.” The key here, of course, is love. Oh no, there’s that word, the one that’s so difficult for us to say or especially show sometimes. It’s ok, you don’t have to go around telling everyone that you love them all day long, but it should be behind everything that you do. Love should be the driving force that makes us get up in the morning, go to work, and provide for our families. It should motivate us to protect our families when they are in danger, and to raise our children by being Godly examples for them. Love should make us put our spouses before ourselves and stand behind them in everything they do. These examples are a little easier for us because we love our families. What about the times when it’s not so easy? What about in the stands of a basketball game? You remember, the referee made a terrible call and he deserved to get yelled at, right? Well, the person two rows behind you was watching everything you did; the anger and hate in your voice was enough to harden a stranger’s heart toward Christianity. We do it behind the wheel of a car when someone cuts us off or doesn’t use the blinker.

We give them that “look” or pull right up close to their car. I’m as guilty as anyone. What about on social media? While scrolling through Facebook or Twitter, we see a post with a political view or an opinion that is different from our own. Man, how we can’t wait to comment on it and “set them straight.” Christians should stand true to their values and to the teachings of Jesus Christ, but the way we relay this message to the world has to change. Right now all the world hears is the clanging of cymbals. Chapter 13 of 1 Corinthians is preceded by the phrase, “And now I will show you the most excellent way.” This should sound alarms for us as Christians! Chapter 13 shows us, “the most excellent way,” to treat people, witness to them, and how to be a Christ-like example to the world around us. Verse 8 begins with, “Love never fails,” this unfailing love is what we are to show the world around us, like the referee or the bad driver. Show love to that person on social media, to your boss at work, or to the person with different beliefs from your own. No matter how hard we try, we cannot change people’s hearts on our own; God is the only one with that power. It is critically important that we don’t hinder the Lord’s plans for another heart. Chapter 13 ends with verse 13, “And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.” So stop making all that noise, show the people around you some love, then step back and watch God go to work. The Stop Sign

t had been a long and busy day. I worked my regular hours then taught an evening class, and it was almost 8:00 as I headed home. It was late, I was tired and hungry, not a good combination. I decided to make a few phone calls as I traveled knowing that once I arrived home, I wouldn’t have the energy to do so. As I talked with a good friend, I approached the familiar back road home and not paying attention slowed up at the stop sign, but didn’t stop. As soon as I turned onto the road, you guessed it; blue lights came from almost out of nowhere! I quickly ended my conversation, gathered my insurance card and driver’s license as I slowly rolled the window down. The officer was serious as he approached my car almost scolding me, “Ma’am, you ran the stop sign.” I was caught. I had no excuse. I wasn’t paying attention; I had become so familiar with this short cut, that I had become lazy and was just going through the motions. I was guilty. He returned to his car to verify my information and as I waited on the side of the road, blue lights, flashing behind me, folks passing by and looking at me with eyes that somehow understood, I thought about the setup of sins in our lives. As we compromise in an area of our lives, it becomes easier with time act out that sin; we feel more secure in the back roads that we’ve taken, it’s just what we do! And the enemy attacks us when we’re at our weakest, when we’re comfortable, even confident in ourselves. Or when we’re lazy and not paying attention; in those time when we’re more likely to run past the strategically planned “God-ordained delays;”

and once out there, we are caught. We’re exposed for everyone to see. We are left speechless. There are no excuses. We are guilty. I remember being taught as a little girl to stop, look, and listen. What a powerful lesson that was. Well, as a big girl, I’m reminded that I need that simple lesson in both my practical and spiritual life. I need to stop and consider that every action/decision has consequences. I need to look and make sure I am doing what is right and pleasing in God’s sight even when I think no one is looking. And I need to listen. I need to always be aware of the enemy’s’ tactics so that I can daily guard my life with God’s protective armor. So I have my first ticket. Yeah, there were no warnings or “breaks” given this time, so I’m waiting on the violation fee. I’m so glad that God’s policing of my life is different. He’s there when I run the stop signs of my life and He pulls me over as well, but He does so to put me back on track. And although there are consequences, He lovingly carries me through to the next sign posts of my life and teaches me that my way may seem right but His way is right. I’m so thankful for His guidance in my life. With Him, I am empowered to stop, look, and listen to the stop signs in my life! Think of a time when God was telling you to stop, look, and listen. A Thankful Heart by Jessica Oliver

T

he month of November has always been a favorite of mine. The smell of turkey roasting, dressing in the oven, deviled eggs, mac and cheese, and big belly laughs with family is nothing short of wonderful. However, we all know there is more to the month of November than that. November is a month of giving thanks; whether that is thankful for puppies, your job, or your family. There are a multitude of things to get excited about. Yet, still, I find myself recognizing that the most precious and prized thing to rejoice over most is life. Philippians 4:8 puts it well when it says, “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable--if anything is excellent or praiseworthy--think about such things.” Babies are lovely, pure, excellent, and created in the image of God. They remind us life is precious. Babies are easy to cherish and easy to be thankful for. They bring us joy and refresh our spirits. They help us stop and smell the roses. The remind us of our childhood dreams, to love without limits, to look beyond ourselves, and to wake up each day knowing it will be a surprise. We are told in Luke 1:41 that the baby leaped in Elizabeth’s womb when she heard the greeting of Mary. “And when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the baby leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.” This scripture is not only a reminder of the baby being able to hear and move (which clearly shows us

that the baby is alive) in Elizabeth’s womb, but that the baby also had a major effect on Elizabeth. When the baby leapt in the womb, it brought Elizabeth joy and she was replenished by the Holy Spirit. We are affecting the baby’s life; but may we not forget that the baby is affecting ours, too. Babies teach us how to truly sacrifice and love deeply, as well as bring us joy. Let me end with this. Whoever has made an impact on your life, be sure to thank them and thank Jesus that He has blessed you with the things you need to get through the day.

Sometimes a forced break is good for us – it can give us a fresh outlook on life and renew our gratitude for what we can’t have temporarily. It’s also a good reminder that we can’t always be in control of our situation. Sometimes we get too busy in our own “routines” to remember that God is in control. After my six-week break from running was up, I laced up the next morning and went back at it, yet very cautiously, as to not re-injure myself. I’ve had a

Compare Yourself to God Not Man

hen you compare yourself to someone, you are trying to measure up to them or be similar to their likeness. In Genesis 1:26, God says, “Let us make man in our image according to our likeness.” So you were created in God’s image and should always compare yourself to God and what God’s word says. God is his word (John1:1) and you are made in his image. Be careful not to compare yourself to others because it can open a door for low self-esteem and disappointments to come in. Remember the story of David when Samuel went to anoint him king (1 Samuel 16). Saul’s rejection had become final and Samuel had to sacrifice his personal feelings and prepare to carry out the purpose indicated. Saul failed and another had to be looked for and trained to fill the place of the disobedient King. Can I just speak over you that Jesus is looking for you? He’s looking for you to rise up; so, get over the way you feel, because you are equipped to fulfill the purpose and destiny on your life! Stop whining and speaking that you aren’t good enough. And please stop comparing yourself to others and get over the expectation of people. After Samuel consecrated Jesse and his sons, he looks upon Eliab and says, “surely the Lord’s anointed him.” And you would think that he would not have made the mistake by judging on countenance and stature seeing that Saul’s didn’t recommend who he was. We can tell how people look, but God can tell what they are (1

Samuel 16:7). God often favors, honors and blesses those who have been least regarded. Samuel was waiting on God’s voice to speak to him and finally he asks Jesse “Are all the young men here?” Yet there was still one who was keeping the sheep and his name was David which signified Beloved. And God says to Samuel “Arise, anoint him for this is the one.” So Samuel took the oil and anointed him and scripture says that the Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward (1 Samuel 16:1213). I prophesy over you today, my Beloved, that you are the one. Know that fresh oil is being poured out on you. You may have felt like you’ve been picked over, but really you’ve been picked out. You’re about to experience an anointing come on you just as it did David. No more comparing yourself to people and no more even taking time to think on what they say or have said. Just as David played the harp for Saul when the distressing spirit came upon him, so will you lay your hands on the afflicted and they will be refreshed! Weights of sorrow and evil thoughts will lift just because of the anointing that rests on you and your life! You will advance in wisdom and courage with all qualifications of your God and that will be how people know that God has elected you! Just as David did, you have found favor with God and Man! recently went back to my Texas roots for a wedding. My wife and four of our six kids went with me; this was an old-style family vacation, but packed into just 4 days. It was an opportunity to show them where I grew up, the streets where we played wiffle-ball and climbed trees, and the schools I attended when, a long, long time ago, I was their age. And after 2,300 miles of driving, it was time for me to realize just how old I am. And then there was the wedding. Family and friends of the family, some of whom I haven’t seen in decades. As with any large gathering, there were some couples that had been together for ages. But there were also ex-spouses seated at tables with their new spouses, while the ex-husband sat across the table with theirs. Some of these couples I have known most of my life, and I remember their first weddings. And sadly, in the years to come, many more of the families there will split, thanks to the epidemic divorce rate in America. So why do some couples last, while others do not? Divorce has hit half of my siblings, many of my friends. There’s no simple, allinclusive answer, of course, but I think a lot of it has to do with commitment to the team. Instead, we go into it with a wiffle-ball attitude. Wiffle-ball is a pick-up game of baseball, played with plastic balls and bats. Teams were determined by who happened to be outside when we started. So while brother may be teamed with brother today, they may be adversaries in the next game. When you’re a team captain, your only goal is to get

the fastest, best-hitting talent you could from the pool available. No loyalty given, none expected. It’s about winning that game, and bragging rights-for a little while. Thirty-two years ago, I made a selection. While that early determination was based on physical attraction and a novice understanding of what love is, the decision was a whole-hearted commitment. This wonderful woman was to become my mate. That’s not the same as dating someone you think is attractive, and whose company you enjoy. It’s a holy appointment. Genesis 2:24 says, “Therefore, a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.” Jesus added to this in Mark 10, saying “So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore, what God has put together, let not man put asunder.” It’s a lifetime of “us” versus “them,” even when “them” is family or friends who try to divide you, emotions that want to overwhelm you, and odds that want to defy you. It’s saying “No” to temptation, turning a deaf ear to the devil’s whispers, and defending and praying for each other even when you’re upset with each other. It’s joining hands and setting course for the horizon, regardless of the obstacles. s we age, our faces begin to show the effects of gravity, sun exposure, and years of facial muscle movement, such as smiling and chewing. The underlying tissues [collagen and elastin] that keep our skin looking youthful and plumped-up begin to break down with age. As we continue to use our facial muscles, the thin stiffened skin shows signs of wrinkles, often leaving laugh lines, frown lines, smile lines, and facial creases over the areas where this muscle movement occurs. Some of the wrinkles are related to genetics, but most are related to sun exposure and “skin experiences”. Facial soft-tissue fillers can help fill in these lines and creases, temporarily restoring a smoother, more youthfullooking appearance. When injected beneath the skin, these fillers plump up creased and sunken areas of the face, erasing years away. Injectable fillers may be used alone or in conjunction with a resurfacing procedure, such as a laser skin treatment, chemical peel, or a re-contouring procedure, such as liposuction, fat transfer, or mini facelift. Facial fillers or injectable fillers are primarily used to improve the appearance of the skin’s texture. They can help fill out deep facial wrinkles, creases and furrows, “sunken” cheeks, skin depressions and some types of scars like acne pits. They can also be used to add a fuller, more sensuous look to the lips and improve “lipstick lines.” Many fillers are available on the market. Common fillers include: Restylane, Radiesse, Jeuvaderm, Belotero, Sculptra and Bellafill. Each of the listed fillers is made from different substances and have different characteristics and modes of action. Effects and length of time are vastly different for each of the common fillers. Some filler effects can last more than 5 years! Botox, Xeomin, and Dysport are not fillers, but rather neuromuscular blockade medications. They are used in

conjunction with fillers to help smooth creases caused by overactive muscles (such as forehead wrinkles, crow’s feet, and frown lines). The fillers help lift the cracks in the skin, while the neuro-blockers causes the underlying facial muscles to be weak. The weakened muscle is then not able to contract exposing the wrinkle. Excess facial skin, fatty deposit, or neck skin is more appropriately treated by skin tightening, surgical and non-surgical face and neck lifts, or forehead lifts in conjunction with fillers and or neuromodulators. Depending on the type of facial filler used, the results may last anywhere from a few months to a year and a half or more. Facial rejuvenation is very individualized. That’s why it’s important to discuss your hopes and expectations during the initial facial consultation with your surgeon. In your initial consultation, make sure to discuss and select a treatment option based on your goals and concerns, your anatomy problems, and your lifestyle. Make sure that your aesthetic ideals match what your cosmetic surgeon has estimated and planned for you. There is a definite art involved for appropriate filler injections. It is not paint-by-numbers, but rather face sculpture. The key is not the filler, but the artist who is completing the procedure. When injectables are administered by a qualified surgeon, complications are infrequent and usually minor in nature. It is wise to search the internet for effects and characteristics of the above listed facial fillers/neuromodulators prior to a facial evaluation and treatment planning. Aren’t You Glad? by Karine Cherry

ave you ever had this happen to you? You hear a word pop up in your mind and everywhere you look, that word starts to appear around you, to the point, you realize that it’s obvious God is trying to get your attention. Have you ever had a song stuck in your head connected to that exact word, hinting to you? Well, this song has been repeating itself over and over in my head. It’s an old children’s song that I used to teach in Sunday school and on the bus ministry. “This is the day that the Lord hath made, we will rejoice and be glad in it.” The word that has been chasing me down recently is glad. It’s definitely not a word we use or hear nowadays. As a matter of fact, I can only recall a few times the word glad was involved in my life, besides learning to pronounce it and comparing when used to rhyme with words like mad and sad. Even though this is a simple and common word, glad has been overlooked and hidden in the depth of our ever growing vocabulary world. I do clearly remember glad being a key word in two particular commercials as an older girl. One commercial advertised trash bags, which are still around today, using the famous “Don’t get mad; get Glad.” The second commercial was selling us on dial soap, as they paint a picture in our minds that being in a crowded elevator of people would cause us to feel glad by using a catchy phrase. “Aren’t you glad you used dial?

Don’t you wish everyone else did?” I still say that when I get in a situation where I feel crowded by people to make joke of the awkwardness of the

As much as God used those random and seldom memories to get the word glad in my mind, I am glad I continued on my quest in the Bible, to learn that glad is flooded in the Word of God and despite what we are convinced on what makes us glad. There are 101 verses that explain the true way to be glad and it all points back to the basics. ◊ Romans 10:15: And how shall they preach, except they be sent? As it is written: How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things! ◊ Romans 10:17: So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. ◊ Mark 4:16: When they have heard the word, immediately receive it with gladness. ◊ Psalms 40:16: Let all those that seek thee rejoice and be glad in thee. ◊ Psalms 64:10: The righteous shall be glad in the LORD. ◊ Psalms 104:34: My meditation of him shall be sweet: I will be glad in the LORD. As simple as the word glad is, the Word of God will make you glad, and it’s that simple. Hearing and receiving the Good News of Jesus Christ will make you be glad. Nothing in this world can fill us with any gladness. Aren’t you glad, you know Jesus? Don’t you wish everyone did?

Eating Healthy for the Holidays A Few Simple Tricks to Keep Your Waistline in Check

holidays are one of the hardest times of year to eat healthy. In fact, studies show that the average adult gains one to two pounds every year during Thanksgiving and Christmas. While this is a small increase, over the course of 10, 20, and 30 years, an individual’s weight gain could be as much as 60 pounds. One easy way to serve the right portion is by comparing it to the size of a deck of cards or a medium-sized fist. There are many little tricks that can help people keep their portions in order – everything from starting with a small plate and eating slowly to leaving a third of the dish on the plate. Just pick one — Dessert that is. When it comes to the dessert tray, it’s easy to have a nibble of each treat. But with every bite, the calories and sugar pile up, causing your blood sugar levels to spike. So this holiday season, instead of trying one of everything on the dessert table, just pick one.

Furthermore, studies show that people who drink a glass of water before every meal tend to lose more weight than those who just jump right into a meal. The reason may be because the extra water makes people feel fuller and not overeat. Watch your portions — Whether it’s the giant serving of mashed potatoes or a second-helping of sweet potato pie, portion size is key to maintaining a healthy weight.

While these tips will prove useful for many, there are 29 million Americans who must pay even closer attention to their holiday eating habits – those living with diabetes. According to the American Diabetes Association (ADA), one in eleven individuals have been diagnosed with some type of diabetes, and an estimated 86 million others are at risk of developing this chronic health condition. These statistics are a big part of the reason ADA hosts American Diabetes Month each November, which happens to coincide with the time of year best known for decadent meals. ADA offers the following tips to help families dealing with diabetes enjoy the holidays and stay healthy: ● Focus on family and friends, not food. ● Eat slowly and savor the foods you only get to have once a year. Also, try to have the same amount of carbohydrates that you would normally eat, and if you plan to have dessert, cut back on another carbohydrate in the main course. ● Plan ahead. Bring a dish that you like and you know you will enjoy. ● Drink in moderation. If you do indulge in an adult beverage, remember to eat something beforehand to prevent low blood glucose levels later. ● Stay active. Physical activity can you help manage diabetes and your weight during the holidays. ● Get back on track if you overindulged and keep an eye on blood glucose levels. It always strikes me as odd that God refers to Gideon as a “mighty man of valor” when the previous scripture clearly states that Gideon was hiding from his enemies (Joshua 6:11-12). How did Gideon respond to this greeting? By reciting to God all of his perceived areas of weakness. “O my Lord...my clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father’s house” (Joshua 6:15, NKJV). Let’s get something straight: If God wanted to condemn us, He would have already done so! The truth of the matter is that God is for us, not against us. John 3:16 clearly states that He loves us so much that He sent His only-begotten Son to make sure that we could be free from the death sentence that our sinful condition demanded. Many people never read the next scripture: John

3:17, “For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.” When God looks at us He is not distracted by our failures; He sees our potential. That’s why He referred to Gideon as a hero, while reality was screaming that Gideon was a failure! Let’s admit it: We all have fallen. And, the truth be told, we’ve done it more than once. We’ve all struggled with maintaining the victory in our lives and have often grown weary in well-doing. Is God frustrated with us? Just waiting for us to really mess up so that He can punish us? My friend, I’m here to tell you that the opposite is true. God is for us, not against us. According to Revelation 12:10, Satan is our accuser. He is the father of condemnation and the source of all lies. We must always remember that we are made in God’s image. God is our Father. We were given life by Father God; we are His creation! After God made mankind in the Garden of Eden He concluded by saying that everything He had made, “was very good” (Genesis 1:31). How can God see a hero in us when we feel like the biggest loser? It’s because He’s not depending on our ability to save the day. All we need to do is surrender to Him, obey His Word, and be ready when He calls. A Blessing Challenge by Carl Corser

ld timers, old timers, sit up and take notice. Remember the old song “Make Me a Blessing?” It goes, “Make me a blessing, Make me a blessing; Out of my life may Jesus shine; Make me a blessing oh Savior I pray, Make me a blessing to someone today.” How many days have passed since you made a difference in someone’s life through being a blessing to them? That song used to be quite popular and sang often in our worship services. Have you really thought about everything involved in being a blessing to someone every day?

Being a blessing is: B ­– Benevolent L – Loving E – Encouraging S – Sincere S – Supportive I – Insightful N – Nurturing G – Giving Scripture states that it is more blessed to give than to receive. Blessing others is very rewarding. Could it be that being a blessing to others is even more rewarding? Is there a deeper commitment of spirit involved? I can say bless you all day long and people who hear these words do feel better, but God making us a blessing or being a blessing by his Holy Spirit’s direction has a much deeper meaning. I must possess a benevolent spirit to truly and honestly be a blessing to others. Being a blessing to others is acting upon a benevolent attitude: one of good will, full of kindness. Being a blessing is loving them in their current state of being. Loving them is not always an easy task, but in God’s love we are able to be a loving person, being a blessing. Once we have the individual’s

attention, we need to continually be encouraging them. They need to be transformed and renewed in their spirit to be able to move away from their current state of mind towards the mind of Christ. Then they need to know, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that we are truly sincere in our being a blessing to them. Our sincerity will build their trust and confidence in the fact that help has finally arrived. By this point in the blessing relationship, we need to be supportive of them in all ways. Some areas they will be more able to find for themselves than others. Our supportive actions will be needed in the areas that they are weak. The next part requires knowledge, wisdom, and understanding obtained through the Holy Spirit. With God’s help, I need to be insightful in when, where, and how I am being a blessing. A word fitly spoken or an act of kindness timely done can make a huge difference in their progress. As the process progresses, we need to be nurturing them along their pathway to success. The old adage says, “Two steps forward and one step backwards” and is true, but through our nurturing, they are still making progress. Until their process is complete and they are capable and willing to be a blessing to others, we must keep on giving, giving, and giving. God is your source of ability. You will never be able to give all of yourself away by being a blessing to others if you don’t allow God to refill you often through his spirit. To truly be a blessing to others, we must be all of these to the individual we want to bless. Being a successful blessing to others makes others successful in their walk with God. Oh how rewarding it is to see the individual you have poured yourself into becoming a successful Christian, being a blessing to others around them. Try it. Practice makes perfect. Old timers, let’s show the younger ones how it’s done. To all of us, young and old alike, we need to just be a blessing to others, always. A Forgotten Tool of Spiritual Warfare (Part 2)

n the last article, we discussed the importance of fellowship as a tool of spiritual warfare. We described how the Roman Soldiers linked their shields side by side to protect each other. This required that they worked together. In Ephesians 6:12-18, Paul talks about the shield of faith. The Greek word for shield is thuros. The root word for thuros means a door. It is a direct reference to the scutum shield from Roman times. In order for God’s army to be effective, we must learn to link our faith with the faith of others. Solomon says, “Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm. But how can one keep warm alone? Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken” (Ecclesiastes 4:11-13). Each of us has strengths and weaknesses. Where we may struggle, others have victory, and vice versa. Working together helps us to sharpen one another. When we read through the Bible, we see that God’s people worked together. Moses worked with Joshua and the elders under them. Jesus sent the 70 out two at a time. The Apostles worked together to resolve issues and transact Kingdom business. Paul worked with Timothy and the elders under them. We were made to work together. It is good to have another perspective. When we fellowship, we impart counsel to one another, often without knowing it. My early days of spiritual growth were spent drinking in what others had to say so I could live God’s way. Many

times people didn’t know what I was going through, but someone would usually say something that I needed to hear right when I needed to hear it! Godly counsel from those with wisdom is imperative (Proverbs 25:22, 11:14, 26:4). Someone else has the Word for us when we are weary (Isaiah 50:4). We need encouragement and even correction. People are going through trials and they need clues to help them persevere. We need to pray, study, and even eat together. Jesus did all these things with others. Will we have differences? Of course we will. The Bible tells us, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another” (Proverbs 27:17). When iron and iron hit each other, there are sparks. When we fellowship, there will be differences of personality, but we mature by working through these differences. I encourage you all to go to church early. Stay late. Spend some time getting to know people you don’t know right now. We need each other. Let’s be the Body of Christ to each other and to the world. “And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching” (Hebrews 10:24-25).
