Letter from the Editor

A

s the school year becomes busier and more challenging, an element of support and encouragement is needed. There are those who bring out the best in everyone they meet. We have all known them—coaches, teachers, parents, and bosses who possess a knack for encouraging and inspiring others to do and be their best. Becoming an encourager doesn’t happen by chance, though. It takes a concentrated effort to keep our communication skills sharp. I read a story of two lumberjacks, a young one and an older one, who raced to see who could cut down the most trees in a single day. When the day was completed, the winner was obvious. The older lumberjack had won hands down. The younger lumberjack could not believe it. “How could you cut down more trees than I did?” he asked. “Every hour I saw you sitting down, while I kept right on cutting. I don’t understand.” The older lumberjack replied, “Every time I sat down, I sharpened my saw. Why didn’t you stop to sharpen your saw?” “I didn’t have time to sharpen the saw,” the younger man said emphatically. “I was too busy sawing!”

Sharpening the saw of encouragement is not just a good idea; it is a Biblical principle: “If you don’t sharpen your ax, it will be harder to use” (see Ecc. 10:10 CEV). In her book, Watch Out! Godly Women on the Loose, Corallie Buchanan makes these opposing, but encouraging statements: “You see limitations; God sees opportunities. You see faults; God sees growth. You see problems; God sees solutions. You see limitations; God sees possibilities. You see life; God sees eternity.” A scripture passage in Luke 6:35-38 is often used when taking offerings and referring to material blessings, but Jesus commands all Christians, “Be ye . . . merciful.” To make sure we get the point, He then spells out four ways to do this: • By not judging others • By not condemning others • By forgiving offenders • By giving and sharing with others. My favorite part of this promise is verse 38: “Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you” (NIV). Try it. I know it works!

Gò0dNews for Women The Whole World Is in God’s Hands Pain in this life is inevitable, but with God, that pain becomes manageable.

T

by Nicole Wiley

here was nothing ever written nor spoken that said that life would be easy. Everybody experiences different kinds of pain whether it be an injury, a loss of a family member, or, seemingly the worst, heartbreak. Words that tend to coincide with heartbreak are bitterness and revenge. I think we should change that statistic and instead turn those words into compassion, forgiveness, and above all, unshakeable faith in God. Ephesians 4:31-32 says, “Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you” (NIV). There have been instances in my life where I have been wronged, where I felt like I didn’t deserve the things I was being put through. Forgiveness was the key to my triumph over these situations, because when we learn to forgive others like Christ forgave us, we realize that the situation acted in our benefit. After all, God gives His toughest battles to His toughest soldiers. In the fifteen years I have been alive, I can faithfully say that He will never lead you to something you can’t get through. There have also been instances where I have not been wronged, but I felt the aftermath of situations I had no part in. Even here, when I have experienced the worst feeling of heartbreak, forgiveness is key.

14 // March 2017

When we forgive others, and even ourselves, God’s favor is on us 100 percent. If the Creator of the world can forgive us of all of the baggage that we carry around, we can surely show the same forgiveness for ourselves and others. Above all of the things that I have learned from my experience with a broken heart, my unshakeable trust in God is by far the most evident. Through my eyes, I can see the perfect life for me, and I can see what and who will be a part of it. I soon come to realize that my idea of perfect was not at all the right idea. God has protected me from so much potential harm and heartbreak that in everything I do, I must trust His ways over mine. I have certainly experienced this word we call heartbreak, but I’ve also experienced the love that has been sent from above that makes me want to redefine the word heartbreak. My heart may be scarred, but I can tell you ingenuously, my heart can never be truly broken, because I have the everlasting love of God holding it together. “No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, nor angels nor demons, nor things present nor things future, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8:37-39 NIV).

Gò0dNews for Health & Fitness Why Motivation Alone Can’t Help You Change

“Only the disciplined are truly free. The undisciplined are slaves to moods, appetites, and passions.” —Stephan Covey, an American Educator, Author, and Businessman by Megan Stockburger

W

hy do so many people have trouble keeping their New Year’s Resolutions? Amazingly, Statistics Brain Research Institute reports that 42.4 percent of Americans never succeed in keeping their resolutions. Certainly, we want the goal—so what makes it so hard? Why We Make Plans But Don’t Take Action The first issue that strikes us when we try to keep our resolutions is time inconsistency. This is the tendency our brains have for valuing immediate rewards more than something coming in the future. When you make a resolution—like setting a goal to lose weight—you are actually making plans for your future self. It is easy for your brain to see the value in taking the actions that will get those longerterm benefits. However, when it comes time to make the decision to eat the salad instead of the fast food burger, you are no longer making a choice for your future self. You are now in the moment and your brain is thinking about your present self! The reality is that our present self really likes instant gratification, not long-term payoff! This is why motivation alone can’t help you change. Your brain values long-term benefits as long as they are in the future! It values immediate gratification in the present moment. The Ability to Delay Gratification The good news is there is something that works much better than mere motivation alone—discipline. Discipline allows us to sacrifice instant gratification in favor of long-term goals. In fact, the ability to do this is a great predictor of success in life. A disciplined person

24 // March 2017

lists personal goals and works until those goals are accomplished despite failures and setbacks. How to Take Action and Succeed Being undisciplined is always bad for our selfworth or self-esteem. For most, the guilt and frustration from avoiding what needs to be done is worse than the pain of actually doing the work! In the words of researcher Eliezer Yudkowsky, “On a moment-to-moment basis, being in the middle of doing the work is usually less painful than being in the middle of procrastinating.” So then, why do we still procrastinate? James Clear, an author in behavioral psychology and a motivational speaker put it best: “Because it’s not being in the work that is hard, it’s starting the work. The friction that prevents us from taking action is usually centered around starting the behavior. Once you begin, it’s often less painful to do the work. This is why it is often more important to build the habit of getting started when you’re beginning a new behavior than it is to worry about whether or not you are successful at the new habit.” So take action. Put all of your effort and discipline into making it as easy as possible for you to get started. The key is not to rely on motivation or good intentions alone but to plan where and how and when you will do your new habit(s), and then you can use your discipline to simply get started. You will find you are already halfway there! Megan Stockburger is a fitness consultant and personal trainer at Bradley Wellness Center in Dalton, GA. knowledge of Acoustic Engineering to the aircrafts he serviced. Michael earned both a Masters in Aerospace Engineering from Ohio State University and recently completed his Masters of Business from Syracuse University. During his time at Ohio State, he took a mechanical acoustics class and so began his passion. The company was conceptualized and put into action by Michael and Lesley at their last Army duty station in Alaska and relocated here to Cleveland this past fall. It was in Alaska that they worked on one of Mac Donald’s favorite projects. The Banks Alehouse is a restaurant that on one side is a sports bar where people watched hockey games, and on the other side there was a nice dining area. Mac Donald and his team were able to design sound absorbing acoustic Home Quiet ® Panels and Ultra-Lite ® baffle systems to drop the noise level from 110 decibels to 38 decibels. This drastically improved the comfort level of the employees, their patrons, and the over-all appearance of the business. The owners, their employees, and their patrons were very impressed with the new atmosphere and within a short period of time, remarked at the improvement of the businesses bottom line. Highland Acoustic Solutions is vital to the Small Business, Builder/Developers and Home Owners that are

faced with the ongoing burden of creating a comfortable environment at a reasonable cost. In your home or at the office, noise pollution will have a negative impact on your comfort and productivity. Highland Acoustic Solutions provides professional consulting, expert advice and creates Acoustic products that are designed, manufactured, and installed in your home or business that are made right here in Cleveland, Tennessee. Two of the special projects that Highland Acoustic Solutions enjoys doing is helping Veterans who suffer from migraines and tinnitus. People who suffer from either, or both, of these conditions can have a hard time sleeping when every little noise is amplified and bothersome. Highland Acoustic Solutions helps create a space within their home where they can relax and sleep better through the night. They are also passionate about helping people and family members who experience specific symptoms of Autism. They are able to create and provide a place of security out of comforting colors, textures, and sound absorbing materials. These designs help to overcome the sensory overload associated with some Autistic children and adults. Highland Acoustic Solutions is able to create and design these relaxing and productive spaces with three main products: acoustical panels, baffles, and cloud systems. They have registered product lines of Home Quiet® Panel Systems, Ultra-Lite® Baffle Systems, and Aurora ® Cloud Systems. The acoustic panels hang on the walls and can either reduce, absorb, or diffuse the sound in the room. Mac Donald and his team help each customer decide what would best suit their needs and where in the room each panel would need to be placed. The baffles are panels hung from the ceiling that can be as big or as small

you want. The clouds also hang from the ceiling and they keep the noise from bouncing up and helps eliminate the echo. From Fear to Faith

A

A Testimony of God’s Faithfulness by Paulette Lewis

little over a year ago the Lord impressed on my heart to give more to missions than my husband and I felt we were able to give. I thought of ways I might invest our small amount and let God give the increase. I had no problem trusting God as long as I was in prayer, but when it came to actually putting those prayers into action, my faith turned to fear. The project was to be for one year. We decided to cook a different item each month, post it on Facebook, offer the dish for a donation to whoever would be willing to place an order, and just leave the rest up to the Lord. Every penny donated would be turned into our local church’s missions fund under the name of the person giving the money, so we would not profit at all. My biggest battle, by far, came at the very beginning of the project. January rolled around and we decided to bake coconut pies. I baked a sample, took pictures of it, had my post ready to go on Facebook, and then it happened. I was overcome with a fear so great I could not push the post button. Normally, I am a “fly-by-the-seat-of-my-pants” type of personality and I often say, “A day without an adventure is a lost day.” I love adventure, but this day I completely lost my adventurous spirit. I was totally consumed with fear. What would people think of such an

38 // March 2017

idea? Suppose no one places an order; can I face failure? I pleaded with God and asked if He was sure this was His plan and not mine. Then I quoted all the scriptures I could think of about faith, got my head on straight again, and in spite of my fears, I hit the post button and the deed was done. Oh how I wanted to keep Facebook open and just sit and watch to see if there was any activity on my post. But I closed my iPad, found something to do to keep my mind occupied for a while, and then I checked the post. Only the Lord knows what joy and thanksgiving flooded over me the moment I saw my first order, then two orders, and eventually we had so many orders we had to close the post. Now the year has ended. The original goal—which was a lofty one—was $5,000. By June we had already exceeded that goal. We upped it to $10,000. When the last money was collected in December, the final amount was $14,195. Isn’t that just truly amazing to see how if we trust God and do what He asks us to do, all of our fear turns to faith and God gets all the glory? And it was one of the most exciting and adventurous years of my life. Paulette Lewis and her husband, Charlie, have been married for forty-five years. They have three daughters, seven grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.

Going to Granny’s by Angie Parris

s a little girl, I always looked forward to visiting my Granny and Papaw Morris. There was always something to snack on. Leftover biscuits, fresh radishes from the garden, sugar cookies in the butterfly topped cookie jar or sometimes, a marvelous two layer peanut butter cake could be found sitting there on the kitchen table. Round, layered cakes always seemed so fancy. A yummy cake with peanut butter in the cake and frosting was wonderful. The only thing better was a hug from my granny! Yes, I do love peanut butter!

Cake

2 cups all purpose flour 1.5 cups sugar 1/2 cup shortening 1 cup milk 3.5 tsps baking powder 1 tsp salt 1 tsp vanilla extract 3 eggs 1/2 cup smooth peanut butter

Directions

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Grease and flour two2 nine inch round pans. Mix together the flour, baking powder, and salt; set aside. In a large bowl, cream the sugar and

shortening until it is light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, beating thoroughly after each addition. Add flour mixture alternately with milk, beating just to combine. Stir in vanilla and peanut butter. Pour batter into prepared pans. Bake at 350 degrees for 40 to 45 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool on racks before frosting.

Peanut butter frosting 2 cups sugar 3/4 cups milk 1/4 cup shortening 1/4 cup margarine 1/4 tsp salt 1 tsp vanilla

1/2 cup creamy peanut butter

Directions

Combine sugar, milk, shortening, margarine, and salt. Bring to a rolling boil in a heavy saucepan, stirring constantly to prevent scorching. Once it reaches a boil, let it boil for two minutes without stirring. Remove from heat and add the vanilla and peanut butter. Beat until smooth and quickly spread on layer one, top with the second layer and cover with the frosting. The frosting will set up quickly on the cake, so pour it warm, and smooth it quickly. Enjoy!

it is. However, when a person is out of focus physically,

of activities, hoping to see what I was missing. As I dwelled upon that experience over several days, I understood. There were a few occurrences and disappointments that I experienced in 2016 that I had forgotten about because, at those times, instead of dying to self, I chose to let my flesh prevail. They seemed so unimportant until, upon remembering them, they began to consume me. So when the word focus entered the scene, I knew I had to make some changes. I had to be willing to die daily and not just say that I was willing. I found comfort in Colossians 3:2-3, “Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth, for you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God’s” (NRSV). As you prepare to close the first quarter of 2017, think back to 2016 or earlier. Are you better now than you were then? Are you more forgiving and caring than previously? Are you committed to making life better for others instead of having it your way? If not, take time to focus, reevaluate, and make better choices to avoid being sidelined or frustrated.
